Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] This application claims the benefit of the filing date of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0042363 filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on March 31, 2021, and all contents disclosed in the documents of that Korean patent application are incorporated herein by reference.
[0002] The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a battery cell. [Background technology]
[0003] Secondary batteries, which have high ease of application across product groups and electrical properties such as high energy density, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) that are powered by electrical sources.
[0004] Such secondary batteries have not only the primary advantage of dramatically reducing the use of fossil fuels, but also the advantage of not producing any by-products from the use of energy, and are therefore attracting attention as a new energy source that is environmentally friendly and improves energy efficiency.
[0005] Currently, the types of secondary batteries that are widely used include lithium ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, nickel metal hydride batteries, and nickel zinc batteries. The operating voltage of such a unit secondary battery cell is about 2.5V to 4.5V. Therefore, when a higher output voltage is required, a battery pack may be configured by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series. Also, a battery pack may be configured by connecting a plurality of battery cells in parallel depending on the charge / discharge capacity required for the battery pack. Therefore, the number and electrical connection form of the battery cells included in the battery pack may be variously set depending on the required output voltage and / or charge / discharge capacity.
[0006] Meanwhile, cylindrical, rectangular and pouch-type battery cells are known as types of secondary battery cells. The battery cell may be a cylindrical battery cell. The battery cell is formed by rolling up a jelly-roll-shaped electrode assembly, which is formed by interposing a separator between an anode and a cathode and is inserted into a battery can together with an electrolyte to form a battery. A strip-shaped electrode tab may be connected to each uncoated portion of the anode and cathode, and the electrode tab electrically connects the electrode assembly to an electrode terminal exposed to the outside. The anode electrode terminal is a cap plate of a sealed body that seals an opening of the battery can, and the cathode electrode terminal is the battery can.
[0007] However, in conventional battery cells having such a structure, current is concentrated at the strip-shaped electrode tabs coupled to the anode uncoated portion and / or the cathode uncoated portion, resulting in problems such as high resistance, large heat generation, and poor current collection efficiency.
[0008] Resistance and heat generation are not a big issue for small cylindrical battery cells with 18650 or 21700 form factors. However, when the form factor of cylindrical battery cells is increased to apply them to electric vehicles, there is a possibility that the cylindrical battery cells may catch fire due to the large amount of heat generated around the electrode tabs during the fast charging process. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0009] An object of the present invention is to provide a battery cell manufacturing method and battery cell manufacturing apparatus that alleviate safety issues such as fire due to gas generation. [Means for solving the problem]
[0010] One embodiment of the present invention provides a method for manufacturing a battery cell, the method including: (A) placing a battery can containing an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and having an opening on one side in an exhaust chamber or engaging the opening to seal the exhaust chamber; (B) adjusting the exhaust chamber to an inert atmosphere; and (C) pre-charging the electrode assembly and discharging exhaust gas generated during the pre-charging through the exhaust chamber.
[0011] Another embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus for manufacturing a battery cell, the apparatus including an exhaust chamber in which a battery can having an opening on one side is disposed or which can be coupled to seal the opening and which accommodates an electrode assembly and an electrolyte. Effect of the Invention
[0012] In the case of the battery cell manufacturing method, since a pre-charge is performed before the activation process after the battery cell assembly is completed, a step of discharging gas generated during this process is not performed.
[0013] In the case of battery cells with improved capacity and / or output, the amount of gas generated during charging increases by 2.5 to 3.5 times more on a volume basis due to the increased size compared to 21700 cylindrical cells, and this can lead to safety issues if the gas is not discharged during the pre-charge process. Therefore, equipment / processes that can discharge gas during charging are required.
[0014] According to one aspect of the present invention, a battery can containing an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and having an opening on one side is disposed in an exhaust chamber, or an exhaust chamber is sealedly coupled to the opening, so that exhaust gas generated during pre-charging can be exhausted through the opening and the exhaust chamber. Therefore, even if the amount of gas generated during pre-charging of a battery cell with improved capacity and / or output is significantly increased compared to conventional battery cells, the process can be carried out while smoothly exhausting the gas during the pre-charging process, thereby eliminating safety issues.
[0015] According to another aspect of the present invention, when a pre-charge is performed with one side of the battery can open, more oil vapor (gas) is generated than in a normal state, and there is a risk of fire or explosion due to the charging pin being an ignition point. Therefore, the exhaust chamber is adjusted to an inert atmosphere, or preferably nitrogen gas is injected to reduce the oxygen concentration to prevent ignition, thereby minimizing safety issues during pre-charge in a high temperature environment.
[0016] According to another aspect of the present invention, the size of a battery cell can be increased by solving the above-mentioned gas discharge problem, which can be realized by improving the structure of the electrode terminal of the battery cell to increase the space efficiency within the battery can, reduce the internal resistance, and increase the energy density. [Diagram 3] In a method for manufacturing a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, a negative electrode terminal is provided at the bottom of the battery can with the opening of the battery can open, and a positive electrode terminal is provided at the other end of the electrode assembly opposite the bottom, and pre-charging is performed at both ends of the electrode assembly to discharge exhaust gas. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0019] The terms or words used in this specification and the claims should not be interpreted as being limited to their ordinary or dictionary meanings, but should be interpreted in a meaning and concept that is consistent with the technical idea of the present invention, based on the principle that an inventor can appropriately define the concept of a term in order to describe his / her invention in the most preferable manner.
[0020] Throughout this specification, when a part is said to "comprise" a certain element, this means that it may further include other elements, rather than excluding other elements, unless specifically stated to the contrary.
[0021] Further, terms such as "unit" and "apparatus" used in this specification refer to a unit that processes at least one function, operation, etc. Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0022] One embodiment of the present invention provides a method for manufacturing a battery cell, the method including: (A) placing a battery can containing an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and having an open side in an exhaust chamber or coupling the exhaust chamber to the open side to seal the exhaust chamber; (B) adjusting the exhaust chamber to an inert atmosphere; and (C) pre-charging the electrode assembly and discharging exhaust gas generated during the pre-charging through the exhaust chamber.
[0023] The order of the steps is not limited to the order described above. In one example, step (B) may be performed before step (A).
[0024] According to one embodiment, a battery can containing an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and having an open port on one side may be disposed within the exhaust chamber.
[0025] Charging terminals may be located within the exhaust chamber to enable charging at both ends of the electrode assembly housed in the battery can, and the charging terminals may be located at one end of the battery can.
[0026] The end of the electrode assembly means an end of the electrode assembly in a vertical direction relative to the winding shaft.
[0027] Since the battery can is disposed in the exhaust chamber, gas generated during pre-charging can be discharged through the opening and the exhaust chamber, and since charging terminals are located at both ends of the electrode assembly, pre-charging can be performed in an inert atmosphere within the exhaust chamber, minimizing safety issues.
[0028] According to an embodiment, a battery can that contains an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and has an opening on one side may be coupled to the opening to hermetically seal an exhaust chamber.
[0029] The battery can having an opening on one side may be in an open state, not connected to a sealing body for sealing the opening of the battery can, and may be connected to the exhaust chamber to maintain a sealed state.
[0030] In this way, by maintaining a sealed state, the exhaust chamber can be adjusted to an inert atmosphere. However, the exhaust chamber is not limited to being sealed as long as it can be adjusted to an inert atmosphere.
[0031] The exhaust chamber is maintained in an inert atmosphere, minimizing the risk of fire or explosion due to the filling pin, and the exhaust chamber is hermetically connected to the open part, allowing exhaust gas generated during pre-charging to be discharged through the open part and the exhaust chamber.
[0032] In addition, by sealingly connecting an exhaust chamber to the open part, oil vapor generated during pre-charging is discharged through the exhaust chamber and is spatially separated from the filling pin, which is the ignition point, minimizing safety issues that may occur during pre-charging even in high temperature environments.
[0033] The battery can is made of a conductive metal material. In one example, the battery can is made of a steel material, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0034] According to one embodiment, adjusting the exhaust chamber to an inert atmosphere is performed by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber to 4 vol % or less.
[0035] When the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber is adjusted to 4 vol.% or less, the oxygen concentration becomes non-ignitable among the three elements of ignition (ignition point, oil vapor, and oxygen), thereby eliminating safety issues that may occur during initial charging.
[0036] The exhaust chamber may be in a vacuum state, and is not particularly limited as long as the inside of the exhaust chamber can be maintained in an inert atmosphere.
[0037] By maintaining the exhaust chamber in an inert atmosphere, safety hazards during pre-charging in a high temperature environment with a lot of oil vapor can be mitigated.
[0038] According to an embodiment, the step of pre-charging the electrode assembly and discharging exhaust gas generated during the pre-charging through the exhaust chamber may be performed with one side of the battery can open while the exhaust chamber is maintained in an inert atmosphere.
[0039] Therefore, gas generated during pre-charging can be discharged through the opening of the battery can and the exhaust chamber, and the process proceeds while smoothly discharging gas generated during pre-charging, thereby eliminating safety issues.
[0040] The battery cell according to the present invention may be a cylindrical battery cell.
[0041] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing a case where pre-charging is performed in a state where an open portion 3 of a battery can is sealed by a sealing body in a battery cell manufacturing method according to a comparative example of the present invention.
[0042] 1, in a method for manufacturing a battery cell, a pre-charge may be performed after the assembly of a battery cell (assembled cell 1) is completed. In one example, the pre-charge may be performed with the battery can sealed by a sealing body, and a step of discharging exhaust gas generated during this process is not performed.
[0043] In this way, when a pre-charge is performed after the completion of the assembly of the battery cell, a large amount of gas is generated inside the battery, and if the internal pressure increases too much, a safety issue may occur.
[0044] Therefore, particularly in the case of a cell with improved capacity and / or output, it is necessary to perform pre-charging with the opening 3 on one side of the battery can containing the electrode assembly and the electrolyte open as in the present invention, so that the gas exhaust step can also be easily performed at the same time.
[0045] FIG. 2 is a diagram showing a method for manufacturing a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, in which an open part 3 of a battery can is opened, a negative electrode terminal and a positive electrode terminal are provided on the bottom surface of the battery can, and pre-charging is performed to discharge exhaust gas from the open part 3 of the battery can.
[0046] Referring to FIG. 2, there is shown a battery cell 100 having a structure in which both the anode terminal and the cathode terminal are electrically connected at the side opposite to the opening 3 on one side of the battery can, that is, at the bottom 20 of the battery can.
[0047] Such a battery cell 100 includes an electrode terminal 10 riveted through a through hole 30 formed in the bottom 20, and a gasket 40 provided on the outer circumference of the through hole to insulate the electrode terminal 10 from the battery can 2.
[0048] In the case of such a cylindrical battery cell, a negative terminal may be provided on the bottom surface, and the riveted electrode terminal may be an positive terminal.
[0049] Therefore, the (+) charging pin 5 and the (-) charging pin 6 can be brought close to one side of the cylindrical battery cell and connected to the positive and negative terminals, respectively, to perform pre-charging. The connection may be made by bringing the (+) charging pin 5 and the (-) charging pin 6 into contact with the positive and negative terminals.
[0050] Since the filling of the cylindrical cell proceeds in one direction, the exhaust chamber 7 is provided in a shape that matches the open part 3 of the battery can and can be coupled to the open part 3 while sealing it, allowing safe exhaust without interference with the filling pin. That is, the filling pin, which is an ignition point, and the exhaust chamber can be spatially separated, minimizing safety issues that may occur during pre-charging even in a high temperature environment.
[0051] At this time, since the opposite side of the bottom 20 of the battery can where the anode terminal and the cathode terminal are formed is open, exhaust gas generated during the pre-charge stage can be discharged through this opening.
[0052] Therefore, the pre-charge step and the gas discharge step can be performed simultaneously, which is advantageous in that the process is quick and simple.
[0053] For the gas exhaust step, the battery can 2 having an opening on one side may be coupled to the opening 3 so as to seal the exhaust chamber 7. This allows the process to proceed while smoothly exhausting gas generated during the initial charging process, thereby eliminating safety issues.
[0054] FIG. 3 is a diagram showing that in a method for manufacturing a battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention, with the open portion 3 of the battery can open, a negative electrode terminal is attached to the bottom 20 of the battery can, and a positive electrode terminal is attached to the other end of the electrode assembly opposite the bottom, and pre-charging is performed at both ends of the electrode assembly to discharge exhaust gas.
[0055] Referring to FIG. 3, the cylindrical battery cell includes a positive current collector 4 electrically connected to a positive electrode uncoated portion 50 provided at the other end of the electrode assembly opposite the bottom 20, and a positive electrode lead tab 70 provided on the current collector is exposed to the outside through an opening at the top of the battery can, and the positive electrode lead tab 70 contacts a (+) charging pin 5.
[0056] In addition, a (-) charging pin 6 is in contact with the bottom surface of the battery can which is electrically connected to the negative electrode uncoated portion 50' of the electrode assembly.
[0057] In this case, the (+) filling pin 5 that contacts the anode lead tab 70 may have a structure, for example, that is provided with a slit into which the anode lead tab 70 can be inserted, or that is provided with grips that can grasp both surfaces of the anode lead tab 70.
[0058] In the case of the process shown in FIG. 3, as in FIG. 2, one side of the battery can is not sealed by the sealing body and is open when pre-charging is performed, so that gas can be easily discharged through the opening 3.
[0059] As described above, the gas exhaust step can remove exhaust gas generated during pre-charge after placing a battery can having an opening 3 on one side with the top open in the exhaust chamber.
[0060] Meanwhile, although not shown in the figure, cylindrical battery cells with one side of the battery can open can be pre-charged through individual channels while being loaded into pellets, and gas generated during this process can be removed from the inside of the cylindrical battery cell through the exhaust chamber 7.
[0061] According to one embodiment, the electrode assembly has a structure in which a first electrode, a separator and a second electrode are stacked and wound, the first electrode and the battery can 2 are electrically connected, and the battery cell further includes an electrode terminal 10 electrically connected to the second electrode.
[0062] Here, the first electrode may be a cathode and the second electrode may be an anode.
[0063] According to one embodiment, the step of adjusting the exhaust chamber 7 to an inert atmosphere comprises adjusting the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber to 4 vol% or less, and may comprise injecting an inert gas into the exhaust chamber 7.
[0064] The exhaust chamber 7 can be conditioned into an inert atmosphere by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber to 4 vol% or less, which can be achieved by injecting an inert gas into the exhaust chamber 7.
[0065] When the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber 7 is adjusted to 4 vol% or less, the concentration of oxygen, one of the three elements that can cause ignition, becomes non-ignitable, thereby eliminating safety issues that may occur during initial charging.
[0066] In this case, the inert gas injected into the exhaust chamber 7 may be nitrogen gas, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0067] The inert gas injected into the exhaust chamber 7 may be continuously supplied during a process of pre-charging the electrode assembly to maintain an inert atmosphere in the exhaust chamber 7. The inert gas may be, for example, nitrogen gas, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0068] According to one embodiment, the exhaust chamber 7 may include an inlet 8 for injecting an inert gas and an outlet 9 for exhausting exhaust gases.
[0069] The injection part 8 and the exhaust part 9 are not limited in structure or position as long as they are parts for injecting and discharging gas. For example, the injection part 8 and the exhaust part 9 may be provided on one end face of the exhaust chamber 7 or in an oblique direction so that the injected gas circulates smoothly.
[0070] The pressure of the inert gas injected into the injection section 8 may be 0.2 MPa or more, 0.3 MPa or more, or 0.4 MPa or more. The pressure of the inert gas injected into the injection section 8 may be 0.8 MPa or less, 0.7 MPa or less, or 0.6 MPa or less.
[0071] The pressure of the exhaust gas discharged from the exhaust part 9 may vary depending on the pressure of the inert gas injected into the injection part 8 or the size of the battery cell.
[0072] A gas supplying device for supplying an inert gas may be connected to the injection part 8, and the gas supplying device may continuously supply the inert gas at a constant pressure to maintain an inert atmosphere in the exhaust chamber.
[0073] 2 and 3, the flow of the inert gas injected through the injection port 8 and exhausted through the exhaust port 9 is indicated by arrows.
[0074] According to one embodiment, the step of injecting the inert gas may be performed until the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber 7 becomes 4 vol% or less through the injector 8. By injecting the inert gas until the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber 7 becomes 4 vol% or less, an inert atmosphere can be maintained in the exhaust chamber 7, thereby mitigating safety issues during pre-charging in a high-temperature environment with a large amount of oil vapor.
[0075] When the oxygen concentration in the exhaust chamber 7 is adjusted to 4 vol% or less, the oxygen concentration becomes such that ignition is not possible among the three elements of ignition: ignition point, oil vapor, and oxygen, thereby eliminating safety issues that may occur during initial charging.
[0076] According to one aspect, the method may further include a step of injecting an inert gas into the exhaust chamber 7 before placing the battery can 2 in the exhaust chamber 7 or before connecting the exhaust chamber 7 to the opening 3. In this case, the inert atmosphere in the exhaust chamber 7 can be quickly adjusted, and stability problems can be minimized.
[0077] According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for manufacturing a battery cell, in which a battery can 2, which contains an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and has an opening 3 on one side, is coupled to the opening 3 to seal an exhaust chamber 7, the battery can 2 including an electrode terminal 10 riveted through a through hole 30 formed in a bottom 20 of the battery can, and a gasket 40 provided between the electrode terminal 10 and an outer circumference of the through hole 30.
[0078] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the electrode terminal 10 includes a body portion 11 inserted into the through hole 30; an external flange portion 12 extending from around one side of the body portion exposed through the external surface of the bottom along the external surface; an internal flange portion 13 extending from around the other side of the body portion exposed through the internal surface of the bottom toward the internal surface; and a flat portion 14 provided on the inside of the internal flange portion.
[0079] The battery can 2 according to the embodiment of the present invention may include an electrode terminal 10 riveted to the bottom 20 of the battery can. As an example, the electrode terminal 10 riveted to the bottom 20 of the battery can may have a rivet structure.
[0080] According to the rivet structure, the positive and negative terminals are all provided at one end of the cylindrical cell, and charging can be performed from the one end of the cylindrical cell. The one end of the cylindrical cell may be the bottom surface of the battery can.
[0081] According to one embodiment, the battery cell 100 includes a negative terminal provided at the bottom 20 of the battery can, and the riveted electrode terminal 10 is a positive terminal, and the initial charging may be performed by connecting charging terminals to the negative and positive terminals.
[0082] The cathode terminal and the anode terminal may be provided on a bottom surface of a battery can.
[0083] Therefore, the exhaust chamber 7 for supplying and discharging inert gas in the other direction is provided in a shape that fits the open portion 3 of the battery can and is coupled to the open portion 3 while sealing it, thereby enabling safe exhaust without interfering with the filling pins 5 and 6.
[0084] Referring to FIG. 2 , the rivet structure of the electrode terminal 10 according to the embodiment may include a cylindrical battery can 2 having one open side, an electrode terminal 10 riveted through a through hole 30 formed in a bottom 20 of the battery can 2, and a gasket 40 provided between the electrode terminal 10 and the outer circumference of the through hole 30.
[0085] The battery can 2 is made of a conductive metal material. In one example, the battery can 2 may be made of a steel material, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0086] The electrode terminal 10 is made of a conductive metal material. In one example, the electrode terminal 10 is made of aluminum, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0087] The gasket 40 may be made of insulating and elastic polymer resin. In one example, the gasket 40 may be made of polypropylene, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene fluoride, etc., but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0088] Preferably, the electrode terminal 10 may include a body portion 11 inserted into the through hole 30, an external flange portion 12 extending from around one side of the body portion 11 exposed through the external surface of the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 along the external surface, and an internal flange portion 13 extending from around the other side of the body portion 11 exposed through the internal surface of the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 toward the internal surface, and a flat portion 14 provided on the inside of the internal flange portion 13.
[0089] Preferably, the flat portion 14 and the inner surface of the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 may be parallel to each other. Here, "parallel" means that they are substantially parallel when observed with the naked eye.
[0090] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the rivet structure of the electrode terminal 10 can be formed using a crimping tool that moves up and down. First, a preform (not shown) of the electrode terminal 10 is inserted into the through hole 30 formed in the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 via a gasket 40. The preform refers to the electrode terminal before being riveted.
[0091] Next, a crimping jig is inserted into the inner space of the battery can 2. The crimping jig has grooves and protrusions corresponding to the final shape of the electrode terminal 10 on the surface facing the preform, in order to rivet the preform to form the electrode terminal 10.
[0092] Next, the crimping tool is moved downward to pressure-form the upper part of the preform, thereby transforming the preform into a riveted electrode terminal 10.
[0093] While the preform is pressurized by the crimping tool, the portion of the gasket 40 interposed between the outer flange portion 12 and the outer surface of the bottom portion 20 of the battery can 2 is elastically compressed and its thickness is reduced, thereby significantly improving the sealing and hermeticity between the riveted electrode terminal 10 and the battery can 2.
[0094] Preferably, the gasket 40 is compressed sufficiently to ensure the desired seal strength without being physically damaged during the process in which the preform is riveted.
[0095] In one example, when gasket 40 is made of polybutylene terephthalate, gasket 40 preferably has a compressibility of 50% or more at the point where it is compressed to its minimum thickness. Compressibility is the ratio of the change in thickness before and after compression to the thickness before compression.
[0096] In another example, when gasket 40 is made of polyfluoroethylene, gasket 40 preferably has a compressibility of 60% or greater at the point where it is compressed to its minimum thickness.
[0097] In yet another example, when gasket 40 is made of polypropylene, gasket 40 preferably has a compressibility of 60% or greater at the point where it is compressed to its minimum thickness.
[0098] Preferably, the crimping jig is moved up and down at least two times to perform the pressure forming of the upper part of the preform in stages. That is, the preform can be deformed multiple times by pressure forming in stages. At this time, the pressure applied to the crimping jig may be increased in stages. This allows the stress applied to the preform to be dispersed several times, thereby preventing the gasket 40 from being damaged during the crimping process.
[0099] After the pressure forming of the preform using the crimping jig is completed, the crimping jig is separated from the battery can 2, thereby obtaining the rivet structure of the electrode terminal 10 according to the embodiment of the present invention as shown in FIG.
[0100] According to the above-described embodiment, the caulking tool pressurizes the upper part of the preform through up-and-down movement inside the battery can 2. In some cases, a rotary rotating tool used in the prior art for pressurizing the preform may be used.
[0101] However, the rotary rotation jig rotates at a predetermined angle with respect to the central axis of the battery can 2. Therefore, a rotary rotation jig with a large radius of rotation may interfere with the inner wall of the battery can 2. In addition, if the depth of the battery can 2 is large, the length of the rotary rotation jig is also long. In this case, the radius of rotation of the end of the rotary rotation jig becomes large, and pressure forming of the preform may not be performed properly. Therefore, pressure forming using a crimping jig is more effective than a method using a rotary rotation jig.
[0102] The rivet configuration of the electrode terminal 10 according to the embodiment of the present invention described above can be applied to the battery cell 100.
[0103] In one example, the battery cell may include a battery can. The battery can may be cylindrical. Its size may be a circular diameter of 30 mm to 55 mm at both ends and a height of 60 mm to 120 mm. Preferably, the circular diameter x height of the cylindrical battery can may be 46 mm x 60 mm, 46 mm x 80 mm, 46 mm x 90 mm, or 46 mm x 120 mm.
[0104] Preferably, the cylindrical battery cell may be, for example, a cylindrical battery cell having a form factor ratio (defined as the diameter divided by the height of a cylindrical battery cell, i.e., the ratio of height (H) to diameter (Φ)) of greater than about 0.4.
[0105] Here, the form factor refers to a value indicating the diameter and height of a cylindrical battery cell. The cylindrical battery cell according to an embodiment of the present invention may be, for example, a 46110 cell, a 48750 cell, a 48110 cell, a 48800 cell, a 46800 cell, or a 46900 cell. In the numerical value indicating the form factor, the first two digits indicate the diameter of the cell, the next two digits indicate the height of the cell, and the last digit 0 indicates that the cross section of the cell is circular.
[0106] A battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention may be a generally cylindrical cell having a diameter of about 46 mm, a height of about 110 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.418.
[0107] Another embodiment of the battery cell may be a cylindrical battery cell that is generally cylindrical, with a diameter of about 48 mm, a height of about 75 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.640.
[0108] In another embodiment, the battery cell may be a cylindrical battery cell that is a substantially cylindrical cell, with a diameter of about 48 mm, a height of about 110 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.418.
[0109] In yet another embodiment, the battery cell may be a substantially cylindrical cell having a diameter of about 48 mm, a height of about 80 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.600.
[0110] In yet another embodiment, the battery cell may be a substantially cylindrical cell having a diameter of about 46 mm, a height of about 80 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.575.
[0111] In yet another embodiment, the battery cell may be a substantially cylindrical cell having a diameter of about 46 mm, a height of about 90 mm, and a form factor ratio of 0.511.
[0112] Conventionally, battery cells with a form factor ratio of about 0.4 or less have been used. That is, conventionally, for example, 18650 cells, 21700 cells, etc. have been used. In the case of an 18650 cell, its diameter is about 18 mm, its height is about 65 mm, and its form factor ratio is 0.277. In the case of a 21700 cell, its diameter is about 21 mm, its height is about 70 mm, and its form factor ratio is 0.300.
[0113] The battery cell 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention includes an electrode assembly in which sheet-like first and second electrodes are wound with a separator interposed therebetween, and includes an uncoated portion 50' of the first electrode and an uncoated portion 50 of the second electrode extending and exposed from both ends.
[0114] The electrodes according to the embodiments of the present invention may be electrode plates, and in one embodiment, the first electrode may be a cathode plate and the second electrode may be an anode plate, although the reverse is also possible.
[0115] The battery cell 100 also includes a battery can 2 that houses the electrode assembly and is electrically connected to the uncoated portion 50' of the first electrode.
[0116] Preferably, one side of the battery can 2 is open. In addition, the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 has a structure in which the electrode terminal 10 is riveted to the through-hole 30 through a crimping process.
[0117] The battery cell 100 may also include a gasket 40 provided between the electrode terminal 10 and the outer diameter of the through-hole 30 .
[0118] The battery cell 100 may also include a seal (not shown) that seals the open end of the battery can 2 so as to insulate the battery cell 100 from the battery can 2. Preferably, the seal may include a non-polarized cap plate and a sealing gasket interposed between the edge of the cap plate and the open end of the battery can.
[0119] The cap plate may be made of a conductive metal material such as aluminum, steel, nickel, etc. Also, the sealing gasket may be made of insulating and elastic polypropylene, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene fluoride, etc. However, the present invention is not limited by the materials of the cap plate and the sealing gasket.
[0120] The cap plate may include a vent notch that ruptures when pressure inside the battery can exceeds a threshold value. The vent notch may be formed on both sides of the cap plate. The vent notch may form a continuous or discontinuous circular pattern, linear pattern, or other pattern on the surface of the cap plate.
[0121] The battery can 2 may include a crimping portion that extends or folds inside the battery can 2 to wrap around and secure the edge of the cap plate together with a sealing gasket to secure a seal (not shown).
[0122] The battery can 2 may also include a beading portion pressed into the inside of the battery can 2 in the area adjacent to the open end. The beading portion supports the edge of the seal, particularly the outer peripheral surface of the sealing gasket, when the seal is secured by the crimping portion.
[0123] The battery cell 100 may further include a current collector 4' welded to the uncoated portion 50' of the first electrode. The current collector is made of a conductive metal material such as aluminum, steel, nickel, etc. Preferably, at least a part of the edge of the current collector that is not in contact with the uncoated portion 50' of the first electrode may be interposed between the beading portion and the sealing gasket and fixed by the crimping portion.
[0124] The battery cell 100 may also include a current collector 4 that is welded to the uncoated portion 50 of the second electrode. Preferably, at least a portion of the current collector 4 may be welded to the flat portion 14 of the electrode terminal 10.
[0125] Preferably, when the current collector plate 4 is welded, the welding tool can be inserted through a cavity present in the core of the electrode assembly to reach the welding point of the current collector plate 4. Also, when the current collector plate 4 is welded to the flat portion 14 of the electrode terminal 10, the electrode terminal 10 supports the welding area of the current collector plate 4, so that strong pressure can be applied to the welding area to improve the welding quality. Also, since the flat portion 14 of the electrode terminal 10 has a large area, a large welding area can be secured. This reduces the contact resistance of the welding area, thereby reducing the internal resistance of the battery cell 100. The face-to-face welding structure between the riveted electrode terminal 10 and the current collector plate 4 is very useful for rapid charging using a high-c-rate current. This is because the current density per unit area can be reduced in the cross section in the direction of current flow, so that the amount of heat generated in the current path can be reduced more than before.
[0126] When welding the flat portion 14 of the electrode terminal 10 to the current collecting plate 4, any of laser welding, ultrasonic welding, spot welding, and resistance welding can be used. The area of the flat portion 14 can be adjusted differently depending on the welding method, and is preferably 2 mm or more in terms of weld strength and ease of the welding process.
[0127] In one example, when the flat portion 14 and the current collecting plate 4 are welded by a laser in a continuous or discontinuous line in the form of a circular pattern, the diameter of the flat portion 14 is preferably 4 mm or more. When the diameter of the flat portion 14 satisfies the corresponding condition, it is possible to ensure the welding strength, and there is no difficulty in inserting the laser welding tool into the cavity of the electrode assembly and performing the welding process.
[0128] In another example, when the flat portion 14 and the current collecting plate 4 are ultrasonically welded into a circular pattern, the diameter of the flat portion 14 is preferably 2 mm or more. When the diameter of the flat portion 14 satisfies this condition, it is possible to ensure the welding strength, and there is no difficulty in inserting the ultrasonic welding tool into the cavity of the electrode assembly to carry out the welding process.
[0129] In the battery cell 100 according to the embodiment of the present invention, the cap plate of the sealed body (not shown) does not have a polarity. Instead, a current collector plate is connected to the side wall of the battery can 2, and the outer surface of the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 has the opposite polarity to the electrode terminal 10. Therefore, when connecting multiple cells in series and / or in parallel, wiring such as a bus bar connection can be performed from the top of the battery cell 100 using the outer surface of the bottom 20 of the battery can 2 and the electrode terminal 10. This can increase the number of cells that can be mounted in the same space, thereby improving energy density.
[0130] According to one embodiment, in the step of sealingly coupling the exhaust chamber 7 to an open portion 3 of a battery can 2 that contains an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and has an open portion on one side, the battery can 2 includes an electrode terminal 10 riveted through a through hole 30 formed in a bottom 20 of the battery can, and a gasket 40 provided between the electrode terminal 10 and the outer diameter of the through hole 30.
[0131] According to one embodiment, in the step of sealingly coupling an exhaust chamber 7 to an open portion 3 of a battery can 2 that contains an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and has an open portion on one side, the battery cell 100 includes a negative electrode terminal provided at a bottom 20 of the battery can, and the riveted electrode terminal 10 is a positive electrode terminal, and when pre-charging the electrode assembly, the pre-charging may be performed by connecting charging terminals to the negative and positive electrode terminals.
[0132] The charging terminal may also include a (+) charging pin 5 connected to the anode terminal and a (-) charging pin 6 connected to the cathode terminal.
[0133] In one embodiment, the negative and positive terminals may be provided on the bottom surface of the battery can, so that when filling proceeds from one end of the electrode assembly and the exhaust chamber 7 is coupled to seal the opening 3, safe exhaust is possible without interference with the fill pin (see FIG. 2).
[0134] According to one embodiment, in the step of placing a battery can 2 containing an electrode assembly and an electrolyte and having an opening on one side in the exhaust chamber 7, the electrode assembly has a structure in which a first electrode, a separator and a second electrode are stacked and wound up, the first electrode and the battery can 2 are electrically connected, and the battery cell 100 may further include an electrode terminal 10 electrically connected to the second electrode.
[0135] Preferably, at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode includes a current collector and an electrode active material layer provided on the current collector, the current collector includes uncoated portions 50, 50' on which the electrode active material layer is not provided, the first electrode is electrically connected to the bottom 20 of the battery can, and the battery cell may further include a current collector 4 electrically connected to the uncoated portion 50 of the second electrode.
[0136] The first electrode or the second electrode has a structure in which an active material is coated on a sheet-shaped current collector, and may include a non-coated portion 50, 50' on one long side along the winding direction.
[0137] According to an embodiment, the current collector 4 electrically connected to the uncoated portion 50 of the second electrode may further include a lead tab 70 electrically connected to the electrode terminal.
[0138] The first electrode may be a cathode and the second electrode may be an anode.
[0139] The electrode assembly may be formed by sequentially stacking the cathode, the separator, and the anode, and then winding the stack in one direction. In this case, the uncoated portions of the anode and cathode may be arranged in opposite directions.
[0140] After the winding process, the positive electrode uncoated portion 50 and the negative electrode uncoated portion 50' can be folded toward the core, and the current collectors 4, 4' can be welded to the uncoated portions 50, 50', respectively.
[0141] Since no separate electrode tabs are attached to the uncoated portions of the positive and negative electrodes and the current collectors are connected to external electrode terminals, a current path is formed with a large cross-sectional area along the direction of the winding shaft of the electrode assembly, which has the advantage of lowering the resistance of the battery cell, since resistance is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of the path through which the current flows.
[0142] The battery cell 100 may include a battery can 2 and a sealing body (not shown), and the sealing body includes a cap plate, a sealing gasket, and a connection plate. The sealing gasket encloses the edge of the cap plate and is fixed by a crimping portion. Also, the electrode assembly is fixed in the battery can 2 by a beading portion to prevent vertical movement.
[0143] 3, typically, the positive electrode terminal is a cap plate of a sealed body (not shown), and the negative electrode terminal is a battery can 2. Thus, the current collector 4 coupled to the uncoated portion 50 of the positive electrode is electrically connected to a connection plate attached to the cap plate via a strip-shaped lead tab 70. Also, the current collector 4' coupled to the uncoated portion 50' of the negative electrode plate is electrically connected to the bottom 20 of the battery can 2.
[0144] When the current collector plate 4 is connected to the connecting plate, a strip-shaped lead tab 70 is used. The lead tab 70 may be attached separately to the current collector plate 4 or may be made integral with the current collector plate 4.
[0145] According to one embodiment, in the step of placing the battery can 2 in the exhaust chamber 7, the battery cell 100 includes a negative electrode terminal electrically connected to the first electrode provided at both ends and a positive electrode terminal electrically connected to the second electrode, and when performing an initial charge (Pre-Charge) on the electrode assembly, charging terminals may be connected to the negative electrode terminal and the positive electrode terminal.
[0146] The charging terminal may include a (+) charging pin 5 connected to the positive terminal and a (-) charging pin 6 connected to the negative terminal. The (+) charging pin 5 and the (-) charging pin 6 connected to the charging terminal may be in contact with the charging terminal.
[0147] 3, according to an embodiment, the cathode terminal and the anode terminal may be provided at both ends of the electrode assembly, respectively. The both ends of the electrode assembly refer to both ends perpendicular to the winding axis of the electrode assembly.
[0148] According to one embodiment, the battery cell 100 includes a negative electrode terminal electrically connected to the first electrode provided at both ends and a positive electrode terminal electrically connected to the second electrode, and the initial charging is performed by connecting charging terminals to the negative electrode terminal and the positive electrode terminal.
[0149] Charging proceeds from both ends of the electrode assembly, and when the battery can 2 is placed in the exhaust chamber 7, the process proceeds while smoothly exhausting gas, thereby eliminating safety issues.
[0150] Another embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus for manufacturing a battery cell, the apparatus including an exhaust chamber 7 in which a battery can 2 having an opening 3 on one side thereof is placed or which can be coupled to seal the opening 3, and which accommodates an electrode assembly and an electrolyte.
[0151] According to one embodiment, the exhaust chamber 7 may include an inlet 8 for injecting an inert gas and an outlet 9 for exhausting the exhaust gases.
[0152] The inlet part 8 and the exhaust part 9 may be provided on one side of the exhaust chamber 7, and are not limited thereto as long as they are parts for injecting and discharging an inert gas.
[0153] The exhaust chamber 7, which can be coupled to a battery can 2 having an opening 3 on one side to seal the opening 3, may have a coupling portion corresponding to the shape of the opening 3, and may be preferably circular. The coupling portion may have any structure or shape as long as it can be coupled to the opening 3 to seal it.
[0154] According to an embodiment, the battery cell 100 manufactured by the battery cell manufacturing method exhausts exhaust gas generated during initial charging through the exhaust chamber 7, thereby minimizing the possibility of deformation of the outer shape of the battery cell 100 due to the pressure of the exhaust gas and / or venting of a cap plate provided on a sealing body that seals an open end of a battery can 2.
[0155] In a battery cell not manufactured by the battery cell manufacturing method, exhaust gas generated during initial charging remains inside the battery cell, and therefore, there is a possibility that the pressure of the exhaust gas may cause deformation of the battery cell's outer shape and / or venting of a cap plate provided in a sealing body that seals an open end of a battery can.
[0156] In the present invention, the positive electrode active material coated on the positive electrode and the negative electrode active material coated on the negative electrode may be any active material known in the art without any limitations.
