Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to devices for disinfecting and sterilizing access ports, for example with male and female Luer fittings, and in particular to a disinfection and sterilization device that can accommodate multiple types of connectors. [Background technology]
[0002] Vascular access devices (VADs) are commonly used therapeutic devices and include intravenous (IV) catheters. There are two general classifications of VADs: peripheral catheters and central venous catheters. Bacteria and other microorganisms may enter the patient's vascular system through the access hub and ports / valves upon connection to the VAD for delivering fluids or pharmaceuticals. Each access hub (or access port / valve or connection) carries some risk of transmitting a catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI), which can be costly and potentially fatal.
[0003] To reduce cases of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) and to ensure that VADs are used and maintained correctly, standards of practice have been developed, including disinfection and cleaning procedures.
[0004] Disinfection caps have been added to the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) guidelines, and there is early indication that caps will also be incorporated into the 2016 Infusion Nurse Standards (INS) guidelines.
[0005] In developed markets, when utilizing IV catheters, needleless connectors are typically used to close the system and are then subsequently accessed to administer medication or other necessary fluids to the patient via the catheter. INS practice standards recommend the use of needleless connectors and state that they should be "consistently and thoroughly disinfected with alcohol, iodine tincture, or a chlorhexidine gluconate / alcohol combination prior to each access." Disinfection of needleless connectors is intended to ultimately aid in the reduction of bacteria that may live on surfaces and cause various catheter-related complications, including the previously mentioned CRBSI cases. Nurses will typically utilize 70% IPA alcohol pads to accomplish this disinfection task, performing what is known as "scrubbing the hub." However, compliance with this practice is typically very low. In addition to the lack of compliance with "scrubbing the hub," it was also noted through clinician interviews that there is often variability in scrubbing time, drying time, and the number of times needleless connectors are scrubbed.
[0006] There are many risks of contact or contamination throughout the sequence of steps associated with the transmission of microorganisms that can cause CRBSI. Contamination can occur during mixing of drugs, attachment of the cannula, and insertion into the access hub. Because the procedure for connecting to a VAD is so common and simple, the risks associated with entering the patient's vascular system are often overlooked. Currently, the risk to the hospital and the patient is a substantial function of the diligence of the clinician making the connection, and this diligence is largely uncontrollable.
[0007] Currently, caps for male needleless connectors, female needleless connectors, intravenous (IV) and hemodialysis lines use different designs and are therefore limited to the type of connector to which the caps can be attached. Conventional disinfecting caps are designed to fit only one type of connector and are specific to one particular size and / or shape of connector. Thus, there is a need for a disinfecting device that can accommodate multiple types of connectors to streamline the disinfection process. There is also a need for a disinfecting device that is capable of continuous disinfection for multiple days. Summary of the Invention
[0008] One aspect of the present disclosure relates to a device for connecting to a medical connector. According to a first exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, the device generally includes an outer cap, an inner cap, and a peelable seal. In one or more embodiments, the outer cap includes a one-piece body, a closed end, and an annular wall having a length extending from the closed end to an open end that defines a chamber. The chamber may include an absorbent material and a disinfectant or antibacterial agent. The open end of the outer cap defines an end face. The annular wall of the outer cap includes an outer cap outer wall surface and an outer cap inner wall surface. The inner wall surface includes one or more threads. The inner cap includes a one-piece body having an annular wall with an outer wall surface and an inner wall surface, a first end of the inner cap faces the closed end of the outer cap, and a second end of the inner cap faces the open end of the outer cap. The outer wall surface of the first end of the inner cap includes one or more threads that can engage with the threads of the inner wall surface of the outer cap. The outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap includes one or more threads adapted to engage with a male luer connector. When the threads of the inner cap engage with the male luer connector, the threads of the outer cap are passive. Alternatively, when the threads of the outer cap engage with the female luer connector, the threads of the inner cap are passive. In one or more embodiments, a peelable seal may be disposed on the end surface to prevent the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent from exiting the chamber.
[0009] When the device is removed from its package, the open end of the outer cap is initially located on the same horizontal plane as the second end of the inner cap. To connect the device to the male luer connector, the user applies an axial load so that the male luer connector engages with one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a clockwise direction, causing the inner cap to partially protrude from the open end of the outer cap. When the inner cap partially protrudes from the open end of the outer cap, there is no space between the device and the connector. When the male luer connector engages with one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, the inner cap retracts into the chamber of the outer cap. When the female luer connector engages with the device, the inner cap slips and retracts into the chamber of the outer cap. Once the device is connected to the connector, the device may be removed from the connector by rotating the device counterclockwise. Upon disengagement, the inner cap and the outer cap remain intact and attached to each other.
[0010] The device is designed to be compatible with interaction with various disinfectants. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antibacterial agent may include variations of alcohol or chlorhexidine. The disinfectant or antibacterial agent may be a fluid or gel selected from the group consisting essentially of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butyl-hydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof.
[0011] In one or more embodiments, the outer cap exterior wall includes a plurality of grip members.
[0012] In one or more embodiments, the female connector may be a needle-free connector, a stopcock, or a hemodialysis connector. In one or more embodiments, the male connector may be an intravenous tubing end or a stopcock.
[0013] Another aspect of the present disclosure relates to a device for connecting to a medical connector according to a second exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, which generally includes an outer cap, an inner cap, and a peelable seal.
[0014] The outer cap includes a body, a closed end, an annular wall having a length extending from the closed end to the open end and defining a chamber containing an absorbent material and a disinfectant or antibacterial agent. The open end defines an end face. The annular wall of the outer cap includes an outer cap outer wall surface and an outer cap inner wall surface. The outer cap inner wall surface includes one or more grooves and one or more threads adapted to engage with a female Luer connector. In one or more embodiments, the female connector may be in the form of a needleless connector, a stopcock, and a hemodialysis connector. In one or more alternative embodiments, the body of the outer cap may be constructed of two components, with a rear end component having an internal cavity threaded onto the front end component of the cap body via threads or welding.
[0015] The inner cap includes a body having an annular wall with an outer wall surface and an inner wall surface, and a first end of the inner cap faces the closed end of the outer cap. A second end of the inner cap faces the open end of the outer cap. The outer cap inner wall surface includes one or more grooves along which the inner cap can slide. The outer wall surface of the first end of the inner cap includes two shaft-like wings to fit into the one or more grooves of the outer cap inner wall surface to facilitate sliding movement without allowing signification of relative rotation between the inner cap with respect to the outer cap. The outermost diameter of the threads of the inner cap is designed to have minimal interference, e.g., a sliding fit or a strip fit, with the threads of the outer cap to allow relative linear motion and also to facilitate assembly of the device. It is desirable that the teeth depth of the threads of the inner cap and the outer cap is sufficient to engage with male and female Luer connectors. The outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap includes one or more threaded tabs adapted to engage with a male luer connector. In one or more embodiments, the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap includes two threaded tabs adapted to engage with a male luer connector. The male luer connector includes a collar with female threads. In one or more embodiments, the male connector may be an intravenous (IV) tubing end, a stopcock, or a male locking luer.
[0016] The inner cap can slide back and forth relative to the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the open end of the outer cap is initially located flush with the second end of the inner cap. When the male luer connector engages with one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap, the inner cap slides against the outer cap and partially protrudes from the open end of the outer cap. When the female luer connector engages with the device, the inner cap slides against the outer cap and retracts into the chamber of the outer cap, allowing the female luer connector to engage with one or more threads on the inner wall surface of the outer cap.
[0017] Disinfecting caps currently on the market can only disinfect one of three types of luer fittings: female luer on needleless connectors, female luer on stopcocks, and male luer connectors on intravenous injection sites. Therefore, to avoid having to use different types of disinfecting caps to clean different types of connectors, the device is self-adaptive to different types of luer connectors by a sliding mechanism between the inner cap that engages with the male luer connector and the outer cap that engages with the female luer connector, thereby allowing users to clean different types of connectors with a single device. When the outer cap is installed onto the female luer connector, the inner cap retreats toward the chamber at the closed end of the outer cap, thus providing a space for the female luer connector to be inserted and screwed onto the threads of the outer cap. When the inner cap of the device is installed onto the male luer connector, one or more thread tabs on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap engage with the threads on the male luer connector. Thus, the disclosed caps can be attached to both male and female luers.
[0018] The device may achieve disinfection when used on a luer connector by integrating a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent into the chamber of the outer cap. The disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be included directly in the chamber, or the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be absorbed into a sponge or foam material that fills the chamber of the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting essentially of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butyl-hydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof.
[0019] Peelable seals on the ends to prevent disinfectant or antibacterial agents from leaving the chamber.
[0020] In one or more embodiments, the outer cap exterior wall includes a plurality of gripping members.
[0021] The outermost diameter of the one or more threaded tabs on the inner cap has minimal interference with the threads on the outer cap to permit relative linear motion.
[0022] Another aspect of the present disclosure relates to a device for connecting to a medical connector according to a third exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, which generally includes an outer cap, an inner cap, and a peelable seal.
[0023] The outer cap includes a unitary body, a closed end, an annular wall having a length extending from the closed end to an open end and defining a chamber containing an absorbent material and a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent. The open end defines an end surface.
[0024] The annular wall of the outer cap includes an outer cap outer wall surface and an outer cap inner wall surface, the outer cap inner wall surface including one or more grooves and one or more threads adapted to engage with a female luer connector, and at least a portion of the one or more threads of the outer cap inner wall surface including gaps that do not engage with a mating feature of the inner cap.
[0025] The inner cap is slidably engaged with the outer cap. The inner cap includes a one-piece body having an annular wall with an outer wall surface and an inner wall surface, a first end of the inner cap facing the closed end of the outer cap, and a second end of the inner cap facing the open end of the outer cap. The outer wall surface of the first end of the inner cap includes two shaft-like wings to fit into one or more grooves in the inner wall surface of the outer cap and facilitate sliding movement without allowing indication of relative rotation between the inner cap with respect to the outer cap. The outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap includes one or more threaded tabs adapted to engage with a male luer connector. The inner cap is in a slidable arrangement with the outer cap.
[0026] Peelable seals on the ends to prevent disinfectant or antibacterial agents from leaving the chamber.
[0027] In one or more embodiments, the open end of the outer cap is initially flush with the second end of the inner cap.
[0028] When the male luer connector engages the one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a clockwise direction, the inner cap protrudes partially from the open end of the outer cap.
[0029] When the male luer connector engages the one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, the inner cap retracts into the chamber of the outer cap.
[0030] When the female luer connector is engaged with the device, the inner cap slides against the outer cap and retracts into a chamber in the outer cap, allowing the female luer connector to engage with one or more threads on the inner wall surface of the outer cap.
[0031] In one or more embodiments, the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap includes two threaded tabs adapted to engage a male luer connector having a female-threaded collar.
[0032] In one or more embodiments, the outer cap exterior wall includes a plurality of gripping members.
[0033] In one or more embodiments, the female connector may be selected from the group consisting essentially of a needleless connector, a catheter luer connector, a stopcock, and a hemodialysis connector.
[0034] In one or more embodiments, the male connector may be an intravenous tubing end, a stopcock, or a male locking luer.
[0035] In one or more embodiments, the threads of the inner cap and the threads of the outer cap are void of interference to allow for a snug fit.
[0036] In one or more embodiments, a gap in one or more threads in the inner wall of the outer cap is disposed adjacent a groove in the inner wall of the outer cap to allow sliding of the inner cap against the outer cap.
[0037] One or more thread gaps in the inner wall surface of the outer cap accommodate one or more thread tabs in the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap as the inner cap slides against the outer cap.
[0038] In one or more embodiments, the two shaft-shaped wings on the outer wall surface of the first end of the inner cap further include one or more pockets having a snap-fit arrangement with one or more protrusions disposed in one or more grooves on the inner wall surface of the outer cap to secure the position of the inner cap relative to the outer cap.
[0039] When the male luer connector engages with the one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a clockwise direction, the one or more pockets on the two shaft-like wings of the inner cap are disengaged from the one or more protrusions on the inner wall surface of the outer cap, allowing the inner cap to partially protrude from the opening end of the outer cap.
[0040] When the female luer connector is engaged with the device, the inner cap is pushed and one or more pockets on the two shaft-like wings of the inner cap are disengaged from one or more protrusions on the inner wall surface of the outer cap, allowing the inner cap to move toward the closed end of the chamber.
[0041] In one or more embodiments, the two shaft-shaped wings on the outer wall surface of the first end of the inner cap further include one or more protrusions having a snap-fit arrangement with one or more corresponding one or more pockets disposed in the one or more grooves on the inner wall surface of the outer cap to fix the position of the inner cap relative to the outer cap.
[0042] When the male luer connector engages with the one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a clockwise direction, the one or more pockets on the two shaft-like wings of the inner cap are disengaged from the one or more protrusions on the inner wall surface of the outer cap, allowing the inner cap to partially protrude from the open end of the outer cap.
[0043] When the female luer connector is engaged with the device, the inner cap is pushed and one or more pockets on the two shaft-like wings of the inner cap are disengaged from one or more protrusions on the inner wall surface of the outer cap, allowing the inner cap to move toward the closed end of the chamber.
[0044] The inner cap can slide back and forth relative to the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the open end of the outer cap is initially located in the same horizontal plane as the second end of the inner cap. The threads of the inner cap and the threads of the outer cap are essentially non-interfering with each other and are no longer constrained by interference, allowing for a slip fit.
[0045] Currently, the disinfection caps on the market can only disinfect one of three types of luer fittings: female luer of needleless connectors, female luer of stopcocks, and male luer connectors on intravenous injection sites. Therefore, to avoid having to use different types of disinfection caps to clean different types of connectors, the device self-adapts to different types of luer connectors by a sliding mechanism between the inner cap that engages with the male luer connector and the outer cap that engages with the female luer connector, thereby allowing the user to clean different types of connectors with a single device. Therefore, to avoid having to use different types of disinfection caps to clean different types of connectors, the device and other embodiments of the present disclosure provide a single device that is used to clean different types of connectors. When the outer cap is installed on the female luer connector, the inner cap retracts toward the chamber at the closed end of the outer cap, thus providing a space for the female luer connector to be inserted and screwed onto the threads of the outer cap. When the inner cap of the device is installed onto a male luer connector, one or more thread tabs on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap engage with the threads on the male luer connector. Thus, the disclosed cap can be attached to both male and female luers. The inner cap threads and the outer cap threads have little or no interference with each other, and the dimensions of the inner cap threads and the outer cap threads are independent of each other while meeting luer standards.
[0046] The device may achieve disinfection when used on a luer connector by incorporating a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent into the chamber of the outer cap. The disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be included directly in the chamber, or the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be absorbed into a sponge or foam material that fills the chamber of the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butyl-hydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent is a fluid or gel. In one or more embodiments, the absorbent material compresses toward the closed end of the chamber upon connection to the female or male Luer connector. Compression of the absorbent material sterilizes the female or male Luer connector.

In one or more embodiments, a peelable seal 150 may be disposed on the end surface to prevent the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent from exiting the chamber 112. In one or more embodiments, the peelable seal includes an aluminum or multi-layer polymer film peel back top. In one or more embodiments, the peelable seal 150 includes a moisture barrier.
[0081] When the device 100 is removed from its package, the open end 110 of the outer cap 102 is in an initial state located on approximately the same horizontal plane P as the second end 144 of the inner cap 132. As used herein, the use of the phrase "approximately the same horizontal plane P" refers to a position where the outer cap and the inner cap are in close proximity to each other, but the inner cap does not protrude relative to the outer cap. To connect the device to the male lure connector, the user applies an axial load such that the male lure connector engages with one or more threads 148 on the outer wall surface 138 of the second end 144 of the inner cap 132 and is rotated in a clockwise direction, causing the inner cap 132 to partially protrude from the open end of the outer cap. When the inner cap 132 partially protrudes from the open end 110 of the outer cap 102, there is no space between the device and the connector. When the male luer connector engages one or more threads 148 on the outer wall surface 138 of the second end 144 of the inner cap 132 and is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, the inner cap 132 retracts into the chamber 112 of the outer cap 102. In one or more embodiments, the male luer connector may be removed from the device 100 by rotating the inner cap 132 in a counterclockwise direction without forcibly retracting it. When the female luer connector engages the device, the inner cap 132 slips and retracts into the chamber 112 of the outer cap 102. Once the device is connected to the connector, the device may be removed from the connector by rotating the device in a counterclockwise direction. When disengaged, the inner cap 132 and the outer cap 102 remain attached to one another intact.
[0082] The device 100 is designed to be compatible with interaction with various disinfectants. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may include various alcohols or chlorhexidine. The disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be a fluid or gel selected from the group consisting essentially of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butyl-hydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof.
[0083] In one or more embodiments, the absorbent material compresses toward the closed end of the chamber upon connection to the female or male Luer connector. Compression of the absorbent material sterilizes the female or male Luer connector.
[0084] The inner cap 132 and / or the outer cap 102 are made from any of several types of plastic materials such as polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene, glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or any other moldable plastic material used in medical devices.

In one or more embodiments, the male connector may be an intravenous tubing end or a stopcock.
[0087] 11-20, a device 200 for connecting to a medical connector according to a second exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure generally includes an outer cap 202, an inner cap 232, and a peelable seal. As discussed further herein, the device 200 can mate with a wide range of luer fittings, including closed female luer, open female luer, and male luer fittings, while sterilizing medical instruments such as access ports, including needleless connectors, male connectors on intravenous lines, stopcocks, and hemodialysis connectors. The inner cap 232 is in a slidable arrangement with the outer cap 202.
[0088] As shown in FIGS. 12-15 , the outer cap 202 includes a body 204, a closed end 206, and a length L extending from the closed end 206 to an open end 210. O2 The open end 210 includes an outer cap annular wall 208 having a cavity and defining a chamber 212 containing an absorbent material and a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent. The open end 210 defines an end face 216. The outer cap annular wall 208 includes an outer cap outer wall surface 218 and an outer cap inner wall surface 220. The outer cap inner wall surface 220 includes one or more grooves 224 and one or more threads 222 adapted to engage with a female Luer connector. In one or more embodiments, the female connector may be in the form of a needleless connector, a stopcock, and a hemodialysis connector. In one or more alternative embodiments, as shown in FIG. 12, the body 204 of the outer cap 202 may be constructed of two components, with a rear end component having an internal cavity that is threaded onto a front end component of the cap body via threads or welding.
[0089] The inner cap 232 includes a body 234 having an annular wall 236 with an outer wall surface 238 and an inner wall surface 240, and a first end 242 of the inner cap faces the closed end 206 of the outer cap 202. A second end 244 of the inner cap 232 faces the open end 210 of the outer cap 202. The outer cap inner wall surface 220 includes one or more grooves 224 along which the inner cap 232 can slide. The outer wall surface 238 of the first end 242 of the inner cap 232 includes two shaft-like wings 247 to fit within the one or more grooves 224 of the outer cap inner wall surface 220 and facilitate sliding movement without allowing indication of relative rotation between the inner cap 232 with respect to the outer cap 202. The outermost diameter of the inner cap's threads is designed to have minimal interference, e.g., a slip fit or strip fit, with the outer cap's threads to allow for relative linear movement and also facilitate assembly of the device 200. The tooth depth of the threads of the inner and outer caps is desirably sufficient to engage with male and female luer connectors. The outer wall surface 238 of the second end 244 of the inner cap 232 includes one or more thread tabs 248 adapted to engage with a male luer connector. In one or more embodiments, the outer wall surface 238 of the second end 244 of the inner cap 232 includes two thread tabs 248 adapted to engage with a male luer connector. The male luer connector includes a collar with female threads. In one or more embodiments, the male connector can be an intravenous (IV) tubing end, a stopcock, or a male locking luer.
[0090] The inner cap 232 may slide back and forth relative to the outer cap 202. In one or more embodiments, the open end 210 of the outer cap 202 is initially located on the same horizontal plane P as the second end 244 of the inner cap 232. When a male luer connector engages one or more thread tabs 248 on the outer wall surface 238 of the second end 244 of the inner cap 232, the inner cap 232 slides against the outer cap 202 and partially protrudes from the open end 210 of the outer cap 202. When a female luer connector engages the device 200, the inner cap 232 slides against the outer cap 202 and retracts into the chamber 212 of the outer cap 202 to allow the female luer connector to engage one or more threads 222 on the inner wall surface 220 of the outer cap 202.
[0091] The inner cap 232 and / or the outer cap 202 are made from any of several types of plastic materials such as polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene, glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or any other moldable plastic material used in medical devices.
[0092] Currently, the disinfection caps on the market can only disinfect one of three types of luer fittings: female luer of a needleless connector, female luer of a stopcock, and male luer connector on an intravenous injection site. Therefore, to avoid having to use different types of disinfection caps to clean different types of connectors, the device 200 is self-adapted to different types of luer connectors by a sliding mechanism between the inner cap that engages with the male luer connector and the outer cap that engages with the female luer connector, thereby allowing the user to clean different types of connectors with a single device. As described above, when the outer cap 202 is installed on the female luer connector, the inner cap 232 retracts toward the chamber 212 of the closed end 206 of the outer cap 202, thus providing a space for the female luer connector to be inserted and threaded onto the threads 222 of the outer cap 202. When the inner cap 232 of the device 200 is installed onto a male luer connector, one or more thread tabs 248 on the outer wall surface 238 of the second end 244 of the inner cap 232 engage with the threads on the male luer connector. Thus, the disclosed caps can be installed onto both male and female luers.
[0093] The device 200 may achieve disinfection when used on a luer connector by incorporating a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent into the chamber of the outer cap. The disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be included directly in the chamber, or the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be absorbed into a sponge or foam material that fills the chamber of the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting essentially of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butylhydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof.
[0094] A peelable seal on end surface 216 to prevent the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent from leaving chamber 212.
[0095] In one or more embodiments, the outer cap exterior wall 218 includes a plurality of gripping members.
[0096] The outermost diameter of the one or more threaded tabs on the inner cap has minimal interference with the threads on the outer cap to permit relative linear motion.
[0097] 21-24, a device 300 for connecting to a medical connector according to a third exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure generally includes an outer cap 302, an inner cap 332, and a peelable seal. As discussed further herein, the device 300 can mate with a wide range of luer fittings, including closed female luer, open female luer, and male luer fittings, while simultaneously disinfecting medical instruments such as access ports, including needleless connectors, male connectors on intravenous lines, stopcocks, and hemodialysis connectors. The inner cap 332 is in a slidable arrangement with the outer cap 302.
[0098] The outer cap 302 has a unitary body 304, a closed end 306, and a length L extending from the closed end 306 to an open end 310. O3 The open end includes an annular wall 308 having a diameter of 1 mm and defining a chamber 312 containing an absorbent material and a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent.
[0099] The annular wall of the outer cap includes an outer cap outer wall surface 318 and an outer cap inner wall surface 320. The outer cap inner wall surface includes one or more grooves 324 and one or more threads 322 adapted to engage a female luer connector, and at least a portion of said one or more threads 322 on the outer cap inner wall surface 320 includes one or more gaps 326 that do not engage a mating feature of the inner cap 332.
[0100] The inner cap 332 includes a unitary body 334 having an annular wall 336 with an outer wall surface 338 and an inner wall surface 340, with a first end 342 of the inner cap 332 facing the closed end 306 of the outer cap 302 and a second end 344 of the inner cap 332 facing the open end 310 of the outer cap 302. The outer wall surface 338 of the first end 342 of the inner cap 332 includes two shaft-like wings 347 to fit within one or more grooves 324 of the outer cap inner wall surface 320 and facilitate sliding movement without allowing indication of relative rotation between the inner cap 332 with respect to the outer cap 302. The outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 includes one or more threaded tabs 348 adapted to engage a male luer connector. The inner cap 332 is in a slidable arrangement with the outer cap 302.
[0101] The function of the gap(s) 326 is to accommodate one or more thread tabs 348 adapted to engage with a male luer connector on the inner cap 332 when a sliding movement occurs. The location of the gap(s) 326, as well as the location of the thread on the inner cap, should be adjacent to the slide groove 324 to minimize the gap size and utilize the width of the slide groove 324 as part of the accommodation space. The thread tabs 348 of the inner cap 332 and the threads 322 of the outer cap 302 are no longer constrained by interference, thus allowing for a slip fit. The thread dimensions can be optimized to maximize the engagement between the thread tabs 348 of the inner cap 332 and the outer cap 302 to the corresponding connector, which improves the mechanical performance of the device when used with the connector in terms of resistance to override torque and resistance to axial separation forces, thus allowing the device to be more securely attached to the luer connector.
[0102] The inner cap 332 and / or the outer cap 302 are made from any of several types of plastic materials such as polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene, glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or any other moldable plastic material used in medical devices.
[0103] Peelable seals on the ends to prevent disinfectant or antibacterial agents from leaving the chamber.
[0104] In one or more embodiments, the open end 310 of the outer cap 302 is initially flush with the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 .
[0105] When the male luer connector engages one or more threads on the outer wall surface of the second end of the inner cap and is rotated in a clockwise direction, the inner cap 332 protrudes partially from the open end 310 of the outer cap 302.
[0106] When the male luer connector engages one or more threaded tabs 348 on the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 and is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, the inner cap 332 retracts into the chamber 312 of the outer cap 302.
[0107] When the female luer connector is engaged with the device 300, the inner cap 332 slides against the outer cap 302 and retracts into the chamber 312 of the outer cap 302, allowing the female luer connector to engage with one or more threads 322 on the inner wall surface 320 of the outer cap 302.
[0108] In one or more embodiments, the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 includes two threaded tabs 348 adapted to engage a male luer connector having a female-threaded collar.
[0109] In one or more embodiments, the outer cap exterior wall 318 includes a plurality of gripping members.
[0110] In one or more embodiments, the female connector may be selected from the group consisting of a needleless connector, a catheter luer connector, a stopcock, and a hemodialysis connector.
[0111] In one or more embodiments, the male connector may be an intravenous tubing, a stopcock, or a male locking luer.
[0112] In one or more embodiments, the threads of the inner cap and the threads of the outer cap are free of interference to allow for a snug fit.
[0113] In one or more embodiments, a gap 326 in one or more threads 322 of the outer cap inner wall surface 320 is positioned adjacent to a groove 324 in the outer cap inner wall surface 320 to allow sliding of the inner cap 332 against the outer cap 302.
[0114] Gaps 326 in the one or more threads 322 on the outer cap inner wall surface 320 accommodate one or more thread tabs 348 on the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 as the inner cap 332 slides against the outer cap 302.
[0115] In one or more embodiments, a snap mechanism may be introduced at the rear end of the inner cap 332 to lock it into place relative to the outer cap 302 so that it can stay in place when assembled. There is interference with this mechanism such that the force created by threading the inner cap onto the male connector can dislocate the inner cap, and similarly, the force created by pushing the inner cap with the female connector can dislocate the inner cap.
[0116] In one or more particular embodiments, the two shaft-like wings 347 on the outer wall surface 338 of the inner cap first end 342 further include one or more pockets 349 having a snap-fit arrangement with one or more protrusions 380 disposed on one or more grooves 324 of the outer cap inner wall surface 320 to secure the position of the inner cap 332 relative to the outer cap 302.
[0117] When the male luer connector engages with one or more threaded tabs 348 on the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 and is rotated in a clockwise direction, one or more pockets 349 on the two shaft-like wings 347 of the inner cap 332 disengage from one or more protrusions 380 on the outer cap inner wall surface 320, allowing the inner cap 332 to partially protrude from the open end 310 of the outer cap 302.
[0118] When the female luer connector is engaged with the device, the inner cap 332 is pushed and one or more pockets 349 on the two shaft-like wings 347 of the inner cap 332 disengage from one or more protrusions 380 on the outer cap inner wall surface 320, allowing the inner cap 332 to move toward the closed end 306 of the outer cap and into the chamber 312.
[0119] In one or more embodiments, the two shaft-like wings 347 on the outer wall surface 338 of the first end 342 of the inner cap 332 further include one or more protrusions 380 having a snap-fit arrangement with one or more corresponding one or more pockets 349 disposed in one or more grooves in the outer cap inner wall surface 320 to fix the position of the inner cap 332 relative to the outer cap 302.
[0120] The inner cap 332 may slide back and forth relative to the outer cap 302. In one or more embodiments, the open end 310 of the outer cap 302 is initially located on the same horizontal plane P as the second end 344 of the inner cap 332. When a male luer connector engages one or more thread tabs 348 on the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332, the inner cap 332 slides against the outer cap 302 and partially protrudes from the open end 310 of the outer cap 302. When a female luer connector engages the device 300, the inner cap 332 slides against the outer cap 302 and retracts into the chamber 312 of the outer cap 302 to allow the female luer connector to engage one or more threads 322 on the inner wall surface 320 of the outer cap 302. The threaded tabs 348 of the inner cap 332 and the threads 322 of the outer cap 302 are essentially non-interfering with one another and are no longer constrained by interference, allowing for a slip fit.
[0121] Currently available disinfection caps can only disinfect one of three types of luer fittings: female luer on a needleless connector, female luer on a stopcock, and male luer connector on an intravenous injection site. Therefore, to avoid having to use different types of disinfection caps to clean different types of connectors, the device 300 is self-adapted to different types of luer connectors by a sliding mechanism between the inner cap 332 that engages with the male luer connector and the outer cap 302 that engages with the female luer connector, thereby allowing the user to clean different types of connectors with a single device. Thus, to avoid having to use different types of disinfection caps to clean different types of connectors, the device 300 and other embodiments of the present disclosure provide a single device that is used to clean different types of connectors. When the outer cap 302 is installed on the female luer connector, the inner cap 332 retracts toward the chamber 312 of the closed end 306 of the outer cap 302, thus providing a space for the female luer connector to be inserted and threaded onto the threads 322 of the outer cap. When the inner cap of the device 300 is installed onto a male luer connector, one or more thread tabs 348 on the outer wall surface 338 of the second end 344 of the inner cap 332 engage the threads on the male luer connector. Thus, the disclosed caps can be attached to both male and female luers. The inner cap threads and the outer cap threads have little or no interference with each other in nature, and the dimensions of the inner cap threads and the outer cap threads are independent of each other while meeting luer criteria.
[0122] The device 300 may achieve disinfection when used on a luer connector by incorporating an absorbent material having a disinfectant or antimicrobial agent in the chamber 312 of the outer cap 302. In the device of claim 28, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be included directly in the chamber, or the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be absorbed into a sponge or foam material that fills the chamber of the outer cap. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, 2-propanol, butanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, propyl gallate, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene, t-butyl-hydroquinone, chloroxylenol, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone iodine, alcohol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, dehydroacetic acid, hexetidine, triclosan, hydrogen peroxide, colloidal silver, benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, octenidine, antibiotics, and mixtures thereof. In one or more embodiments, the disinfectant or antimicrobial agent may be a fluid or gel. In one or more embodiments, the absorbent material compresses towards the closed end of the chamber when connected to a female or male Luer connector.Compression of the absorbent material 314 sanitizes the female or male luer connector.
