Description

[Technical field]

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure relates to water supply systems and methods for controlling water supply systems, and more particularly, to systems and methods for controlling water flow and controlling temperature within the systems. [Background technology]

[0002] Traditionally, water supply systems consist of hot water pipes, cold water supply pipes, and circulation pipes, and require users to not wait too long for water of an acceptable temperature at their individual taps. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0003] It is an object of embodiments of the present disclosure to provide an improved water supply system.

[0004] It is a further object of embodiments of the present disclosure to provide an improved method of controlling a water supply system.

[0005] According to a first aspect, the present disclosure provides a water supply system including: - a central water supply; -Multiple faucets and - at least one operating device arranged on one tap; - a piping system connecting a central water supply with a number of taps, the piping system having a separate flow path from the central water supply to each tap; - a controller for individually controlling water flow from a central water supply to a plurality of water taps and individually controlling an outlet temperature of the water flow at an outlet of the central water supply, the controller being disposed in the central water supply, the controller being operable at the water taps via the at least one operating device.

[0006] By providing a controller at the central water supply and operable via the operating device of the tap, a non-pressurized water supply system is provided. The advantage of such a non-pressurized water supply system is that in the event of a leak in the piping system, only the amount of water contained in the piping from the central water supply to the tap will flow into the building.

[0007] The water supply system may be a domestic water supply system for the supply of domestic water in domestic buildings such as domestic houses and apartments, a water supply system for the supply of water in offices, industry, agriculture, healthcare such as hospitals, or any other place where water is used. The water supply system may further supply water for heating in domestic buildings, offices, industry, agriculture, healthcare such as hospitals, or any other place where heating is required.

[0008] The central water supply may be a water tank for storing water in the building in which the water supply system is located, or it may be a manifold, a water inlet to a building, a common water storage for supplying water to several buildings, etc. The term "central water supply" means that the water tank / manifold / inlet can supply water to several taps in a building or several taps in several buildings.

[0009] The system includes a plurality of water taps, which may provide a user with access to water for drinking, bathing, cocking, washing, etc. In the context of the present invention, the term "water tap" encompasses conventional water taps in kitchens, bathrooms, one or more water taps, outdoor faucets, as well as showers, bathtubs, jacuzzis, or other rooms having bathtub faucets. Furthermore, the term "water tap" also encompasses toilets, bidets, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. Thus, a "water tap" may be any element within or outside a building that may draw water for drinking, bathing, cocking, cleaning, washing, flushing, etc.

[0010] In an alternative embodiment, the water supply system may also be used to supply water for heating, in which case the faucet may instead cover a similar heater, radiator, underfloor heater, etc. Therefore, in the following, the term "faucet" also covers "heater".

[0011] An operation device is located at at least one faucet and allows a user to utilize the faucet. "Operation" means, for example, starting and stopping the water flow from a central water supply. The controller is located at the central water supply and the operation devices are two separate devices located at the faucets. A water supply system can include multiple operation devices. Each of these operation devices can operate the controller to control the water flow to each faucet. In one embodiment, an operation device is located at each faucet. However, in alternative embodiments, two or more faucets can share an operation device. As an example, a shower and a washbasin located in the same room can each include a faucet that can be operated by a single operation device.

[0012] The operating device may be configured to generate an electric demand signal, and the controller may be configured to receive the electric demand signal and to control the water flow and outlet temperature in response to the demand signal. The electric demand signal may be communicated from the operating device to the controller via wireless communication. In an alternative embodiment, the communication may be wired communication.

[0013] A piping system connecting a central water supply to a plurality of water taps. The piping system forms a flow path for water from the central water supply to a plurality of water taps, where the piping system comprises a separate flow path from the central water supply to each water tap. The piping system may be formed by a single pipe extending from the central water supply to the water taps. In one embodiment, the piping system may comprise a plurality of pipes.

[0014] The piping system may be formed from polypropylene, different types of polyethylene, metal, or another suitable material.

[0015] Typically the pipes are circular in cross section, however it will be appreciated that other cross sections are also applicable, such as oval, square, triangular or any other cross section.

[0016] The diameter of the pipes of a piping system having a circular cross section may range from 5 to 100 mm, or even more. It is understood that the diameter of the pipe to one tap may be different from the diameter of the pipe to another tap. Furthermore, it should be understood that the diameter of the piping system may be different. In a domestic building, for example, the inner diameter of the pipes for supplying water to a tap in a kitchen or bathroom is typically about 8 mm, and the outer diameter is about 12 mm. It is understood that pipes with other diameters are also applicable. The size of the pipes may depend, by way of example, on the distance to the tap, the amount of water to be used, the maximum flow demand required, etc.

[0017] The water supply system further comprises a controller that controls the flow of water from the central water supply to the plurality of water taps. In a simple embodiment, the controller is adjustable between a fully open and a fully closed configuration, thereby providing either a maximum flow rate (100% flow rate) or a zero flow rate. In an alternative embodiment, the controller is adjustable between a plurality of configurations that allow a plurality of different flow rates between the maximum flow rate (100% flow rate) and a zero flow rate.

[0018] The controller is located in the central water supply, whereby the flow is regulated in the central water supply. The controller is operable via an operating device at the tap of the faucet, whereby the user can operate the controller from the location of the tap. The communication between the controller and the operating device may be wireless, for example by using WIFI. The operating device may be, by way of example, mounted on a wall, on a basin, on a cupboard or on another element in the area of the tap. In one embodiment, the operating device may be of a size and shape that allows it to be integrated into a fixed device for a conventional wall socket. The operating device may therefore be in a fixed location. In an alternative embodiment, the operating device may be a portable device.

[0019] In one embodiment, the control device may be a mobile phone or another similar mobile device. In a particular embodiment, the mobile phone may constitute the control device, and operation of the controller may be performed using an App on the mobile phone. In an alternative embodiment, the control device may be operated via a mobile phone or similar device.

[0020] To facilitate regulation of the water flow from the central water supply, the controller may include at least one flow regulator, such as a valve for controlling the water flow, and thus the controller may include at least one of a valve, a motor, a PCB, and other elements for controlling the flow rate and communicating with an operating device.

[0021] The controller includes a separate flow regulator for each faucet, thereby allowing the water flow to be controlled individually for each faucet.

[0022] The controller is further configured to control an outlet temperature of the water stream at an outlet of the central water feed. In one embodiment, the outlet temperature of the water stream can be controlled by mixing hot and cold water in the central water feed, such as in a water mixing chamber disposed in communication with the central water feed.

[0023] When controlling the outlet temperature of a water stream, the distance to the associated tap can be taken into consideration, thereby providing a water stream with a desired outlet temperature at the tap. Thus, if a particular tap is far away from the central tap, the outlet temperature of water away from the central tap will be warmer than water located closer to the central tap, for the same desired temperature at the tap.

[0024] To facilitate control of the water temperature, the controller may comprise or be in communication with a control unit which may comprise an algorithm configured to calculate the required outlet temperature of the water leaving the central water source depending on the desired water temperature at the faucet and the distance between the faucet and the central water source.

[0025] Thus, the controller is configured to individually control the water flow from the central water supply source to each faucet, and further configured to individually control the outlet temperature of the water flow from the central water supply source to each faucet. In one embodiment, the flow regulator can be configured to control both the water flow and the outlet temperature of the water flow. This can be done for each faucet individually. In an alternative embodiment, the flow regulator and temperature regulator may be applied as two separate devices.

[0026] The supply system may include a measuring device configured to measure the outlet temperature of the water at the outlet from the central supply system. The measurements may be used as input to an adjustment algorithm of the controller to fine-tune the temperature of the water flow at the outlet, thereby facilitating the delivery of water at the desired temperature of the faucet.

[0027] The central water supply may further comprise a circulation pipe for circulating water through the central water supply. This may help ensure that the temperature of the water in the central water supply is maintained above 55°C to reduce the risk of legionella, and may make it easier to control the temperature of the taps and therefore provide a shorter response time for delivery of water at the desired temperature at the taps.

[0028] To facilitate individual control of water flow and temperature at each faucet, the plumbing system provides individual flow paths from a central water supply to each faucet.

[0029] An operating device may be located at each faucet, the operating device configured to communicate with the controller to control the flow of water to the faucet and to control the temperature of the water. By placing an operating device at each faucet, a user may control the flow and temperature of water to that particular faucet. It should be understood that the operating device may alternatively be used to control the flow and temperature of water at more than one faucet. These alternatives may be combined, whereby the system may comprise one or more operating devices each located at a faucet for operating the controller to control the flow and temperature to a single faucet, and the system may further comprise one or more operating devices each located at a faucet for operating the controller to control the flow and temperature to one or more faucets.

[0030] The control device may be configured to receive a control signal in the form of at least one of a touch signal, an audible signal, and a gesture signal, and configured to operate the controller based on the received signal. The control device may include, as an example, a touch panel for controlling the flow rate and / or temperature by tapping on the panel and / or by applying pressure to the panel. In one embodiment, the touch panel may include multiple areas, each designating a particular amount of water flow and / or a particular temperature, such that the touch panel corresponds to a plurality of different user patterns. In an alternative embodiment, applying pressure in one area increases the temperature, while applying pressure in another area decreases the temperature. Similarly, applying pressure in one area may increase the flow rate, while applying pressure in another area may decrease the water flow rate.

[0031] It should be understood that the above mentioned possibility of application of user patterns from multiple defined areas on the device can be combined with the above mentioned application of pressure on defined areas.

[0032] In another embodiment, the action may be performed by the use of an audible signal, for example using commands of the form "warmer", "colder", "more", "less", "stop", "start". Other commands are also applicable. It may also be possible to incorporate predefined commands corresponding to user patterns, such as "brush teeth", "wash hands", or "shower", each command corresponding to a water flow at a specified temperature, with a specified flow rate, and with a specified duration. In one embodiment, it may be possible to abort a given command after starting it, for example if the associated action is regretted.

[0033] In further embodiments, actions may be performed by gesture signals. The same types of events as described above can be accomplished by gestures. As an example, if the user's hand is moved to the right, the water flow may be warmer.

[0034] It should be understood that the above commands are example commands and that other and / or additional commands are also applicable.

[0035] By applying audible and / or gestural signals, it is possible to operate the control device without touching it, reducing the risk of transferring bacteria due to poor hygiene.

[0036] In one embodiment, at least two of the different types of signals may be combined.

[0037] The controller may communicate with a database including a plurality of predefined control strategies, each of which defines a desired water flow and a desired temperature. Thus, the predefined control strategies may correspond to a number of user patterns, such as "tooth brushing", "hand washing", and "showering". Certain predefined control strategies may be stored in the database when the system is installed, while other control strategies may be added by the user via the user interface. In one embodiment, it may be possible to not only add control strategies, but also to modify the predefined control strategies via the user interface. Through the database, the controller may control at least one of the water flow and the temperature. The operating device may be configured to select at least one predefined control strategy.

[0038] For further security, the piping system may comprise an inner tube and an outer tube arranged coaxially, where the outer tube is configured for protection of the inner tube. In case the inner tube forming the water flow path is broken, the leakage can be kept in the outer tube without damaging the building. For further security, with the piping system consisting of the inner tube and the outer tube, leakage monitoring can be applied in the cavity between the inner tube and the outer tube as a monitoring element. The monitoring element can be configured to generate an alarm if water is detected in the cavity. In one embodiment, the monitoring element can generate an alarm signal that can be transmitted to at least one of a controller, an operating device, a mobile phone, a monitoring device, or another device that can be read by the user or that can provide an alarm to the user.

[0039] The water supply system may further comprise a monitoring unit for monitoring water usage, the controller may be configured to transmit usage signals specifying water flow from the central water supply to the monitoring unit, and the monitoring unit may be configured to store said usage signals.

[0040] In one embodiment, the monitoring unit may be configured to store the usage signal of each faucet separately. As an example, it may be possible to compare the usage signal with previously stored usage signals; i.e., historical values, and / or to compare the usage signal with expected values. These comparisons may allow for detection of faults, such as a leaky toilet due to continuous water usage.

[0041] The controller may further be configured to send a temperature signal to the monitoring unit specifying the temperature of the water flow from the central water supply. The monitoring unit may in turn be configured to store said temperature signal, whereby correlated values of flow rate and temperature may be monitored and stored in the monitoring unit.

[0042] A user can log into the monitoring unit to access the monitored and stored usage and / or temperature signals. The monitoring unit can alternatively or additionally communicate with a cell phone, another mobile device, a pc, or another user accessible device.

[0043] In the case of flow and temperature monitoring, the system may identify that one or more parts of the piping system have been exposed to water with temperatures mainly in the range of 20-45°C. Legionella may be at risk, so with the aid of flow and temperature monitoring this risk can be eliminated if temperatures do not regularly rise above 55°C. If such a situation is found during monitoring, the system may generate a warning signal / message. In response, the user may request that the water be heated to a temperature above 55°C, providing a water flow through the part of the piping in question, thereby killing Legionella bacteria if present (Legionella flushing). The system may be equipped with a safety measure, which ensures that no heating of the water takes place when the user operates the controller at a water tap placed in the piping system in question.

[0044] Also, flow monitoring can provide the possibility to calculate water consumption at individual taps separately. Additional monitoring of temperature can provide more accurate accounting. This possibility can be particularly relevant for apartment and office buildings with multiple tenancies.

[0045] In one embodiment, the central water supply can be in fluid communication with an additional supply device containing an additional medium, and the supply of the additional medium to the at least one faucet can be controlled by the controller. The additional medium can be a fluid, such as a gas or liquid medium. For example, the additional medium can be CO2 so as to be able to provide sparkling / saturated water. Another example of an additional medium can be detergent, which can be particularly relevant if the faucet is a washing machine or dishwasher. In one embodiment, the additional medium can be water heated, for example by a cooker, to provide water at a higher temperature than the conventional hot water provided by the faucet. In an embodiment where the water supply system is used industrially, the additional medium can be, for example, oil or colorant for food or fabric. Depending on the type of faucet, other media can also be applied.

[0046] In one embodiment, the controller may be configured to simultaneously control the supply of water flow and the supply of the additional medium to the at least one water tap. Thus, the controller may control the supply of water and the additional medium such that the water and the additional medium are supplied simultaneously. Alternatively, the simultaneous control may be achieved by alternating the supply of water and the additional medium.

[0047] The additional medium may be supplied to the faucets via a separate flow path from the central faucet to the faucets. The additional medium may be mixed with the hot and cold water in a water mixing chamber located in communication with the central water supply. In an alternative embodiment, the additional medium may be mixed with the hot and cold water in an additional mixing chamber located after the water mixing chamber, whereby the additional medium may be added after providing the required water flow and temperature. In a further alternative, the additional medium may be added to the flow path via an inlet in the piping system without the use of an additional mixing chamber.

[0048] According to a second aspect, the disclosure provides a method of controlling a water supply system having a central water supply, the method comprising: a plurality of water taps; an operating device located at one of the water taps; a piping system connecting the central water supply and the plurality of water taps, the piping system having a separate flow path from the central water supply to each of the water taps; and a controller individually controlling water flow from the central water supply to the at least one water tap and individually controlling an outlet temperature of the water flow at an outlet of the central water supply, the controller being located at the central water supply, and operating the controller at the water tap via the operating device.

It should be understood that the step motor in alternative embodiments can be replaced by another type of motor or drive element capable of moving at least one of the adjusting elements.

[0085] The inlets to the flow regulator 14 include a hot water inlet 17A and a cold water inlet 17B. When one of the regulating elements 15B is moved, the aperture ratio is adjusted, thereby adjusting the water flow and temperature of the water leaving the flow regulator 14. The hot water inlet 17A and the cold water inlet 17B are located on one side of the regulating elements 15A, 15B, while the outlet 18 of the flow regulator 14 is located on the opposite side of the regulating elements. A mixing chamber 118 is formed on this opposite side of the regulating elements 15A, 15B. The outlet 18 is in fluid communication with the mixing chamber 118 to provide water at the required flow rate and temperature at each tap.

[0086] Figures 11A-11B show embodiments of the adjusting elements 15A, 15B of the flow regulator in Figures 10A-10C. In the embodiment shown, the adjusting element 15B is a movable element and the other adjusting element 15A is a stationary element.

[0087] The openings 19A in the fixed adjusting element 15A are in fluid communication with the hot water inlet 17A and the cold water inlet 17B, respectively. In the illustrated embodiment, the movable adjusting element 15B includes ten openings 19B. Some of the openings 19B are of different sizes. In the illustrated embodiment, the openings 19B are pairwise identical, i.e., the ten openings 19B are formed such that there are five different sizes. The flow through the flow regulator 14 depends on the overlap between the openings 19A of the fixed adjusting element 15A and the openings 19B of the movable adjusting element 15B. The overlap also determined the temperature of the water flow.

[0088] Figures 12A-12E show the adjusting element 15B of Figure 11B in different positions, which correspond to different temperatures of the water flow. Figure 12A-1 / 5 flow rate and 6 degree water flow. Figure 12B-60 degree water flow at 5 / 5 flow rate (full open). Figure 12C-2 / 5 Water flow at 20 degrees. Figure 12D-4 / 5 Flow rate at 38 degrees. Figure 12E - Zero water flow.

[0089] Water flows through the flow regulator through the uncolored openings in Figures 12A-12E. The dark openings and the openings outlined in diagonal lines are the openings in movable adjusting element 15B that are blocked by fixed adjusting element 15A.

[0090] It should be understood that the above diagrams correspond to the specific embodiment of flow regulator 14 having regulating elements 15A, 15B shown in Figures 11A and 11B. The flow rate and water temperature can be varied by providing regulating elements of different sizes and / or shapes, having different numbers of openings, openings of different sizes and / or shapes.

[0091] FIG. 13 shows a schematic cross-section of a part of a controller 6 for a water supply system 1.
