Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to modules for use with an aerosol delivery device, as well as to systems comprising an aerosol delivery device and one or more modules. [Background technology]
[0002] Smoking articles, such as cigarettes, cigars, etc., burn tobacco to produce tobacco smoke when used. Attempts have been made to provide alternatives to such smoking articles that burn tobacco by creating products that release compounds without combustion. An example of such a product is a heating device that releases compounds by heating a material rather than burning it. The material may be, for example, tobacco or other non-tobacco products, which may or may not contain nicotine. Summary of the Invention

[0008] [Detailed Description] As used herein, the term "aerosol-forming material" includes materials that upon heating provide volatile components, typically in the form of an aerosol. Aerosol-forming materials include any tobacco-containing material, such as one or more of tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, or tobacco substitutes. Aerosol-forming materials may also include other non-tobacco products, and some products may or may not contain nicotine. Aerosol-forming materials may be in the form of, for example, a solid, liquid, gel, wax, etc. Aerosol-forming materials may also be, for example, a combination or blend of materials. Aerosol-forming materials may also be referred to as "smoking materials."
[0009] Devices are known that heat an aerosol-generating material to volatilize at least one component of the aerosol-generating material to form an inhalable aerosol, typically without burning or combusting the aerosol-generating material. Such devices may be described as "aerosol delivery devices", "aerosol-generating devices", "non-combustion heating devices", "tobacco heating product devices", or "tobacco heating devices". There are also so-called e-cigarette devices, which vaporize an aerosol-generating material, typically in liquid form, which may or may not contain nicotine. The aerosol-generating material may be in the form of, or provided as part of, a rod, cartridge, or cassette that can be inserted into the device. A heater for heating and volatilizing the aerosol-generating material may be provided as a "permanent" part of the device, or may be combined with a replaceable or consumable aerosol-generating material.
[0010] The aerosol delivery device can accept an article that includes the aerosol-generating material for heating. An "article" in this context is a part that includes or contains the aerosol-generating material during use, which is heated to volatilize the aerosol-generating material and optionally other components during use. A user inserts the article into the aerosol delivery device before it is heated to generate an aerosol, after which the user can inhale the aerosol. The article can be, for example, of a predetermined or specific size that is configured to be placed in a heating chamber of the device that is sized to accept the article. Alternatively, the aerosol-generating material can simply be placed in a free or unconstrained manner in the heating chamber or aerosol-generating region of the device, for example, loose-leaf tobacco can be used in this manner.
[0011] As used herein, the term "operably connected" is a connection that allows for the transmission of power and / or data from one module to another module and / or to the aerosol delivery device. A module that is "operably connected" to an aerosol delivery device may be directly connected to the aerosol delivery device or may be directly connected to one or more other modules, provided that at least one of the one or more other modules is directly connected to the aerosol delivery device. In such an arrangement, all of the connected modules are considered to be "operably connected" to the aerosol delivery device.
[0012] As used herein, the term "in use" when referring to a module is when the module is operably connected to an aerosol delivery device. The aerosol delivery device does not have to also be in use by a user to generate aerosol for inhalation to be considered operably connected, although this may be the case.
[0013] As used herein, the term "controller" refers to any means capable of controlling the functions of a device. For example, the controller may comprise a simple switch configured to activate and deactivate the supply of power from a power source. Alternatively, the controller may comprise one or more microchips that may be configured to control complex functions of the device. The controller may be configured to allow direct control of the device by a user, or may be configured to automatically control the functions of the device, e.g., in response to a user's puffs, or a combination thereof. Remote control of the device is also envisioned.
[0014] As used herein, the term "external device" refers to any device that is not an aerosol delivery device or module according to the present invention.
[0015] In order to improve the user experience during the use of an aerosol delivery device, device enhancements are continually being pursued. Such enhancements may be, for example, larger battery size, improved means for user interaction, improved connectivity and data management, etc. However, adding additional functionality to an aerosol delivery device generally increases at least one of the size, weight, and cost of the device. Furthermore, some users may only want to improve a portion of the possible functionality. For example, some users may want an increase in battery size, but may not be interested in more complex user interface options. In an attempt to meet the demands of a wide potential user base, aerosol delivery device suppliers need to offer a wide range of devices that include many possible combinations of enhancements.
[0016] The present invention addresses this problem by transferring all but the most basic functionality of the aerosol delivery device to a removable add-on module. The aerosol delivery device is configured to function independently of any module, but functionality is kept to a minimum. This allows the basic aerosol delivery device to be small, lightweight, and inexpensive. The user can then obtain one or more modules to attach to the aerosol delivery device in whatever combination they desire to add the desired functionality. For example, a user desiring to extend battery life can select an add-on module that includes a larger battery. Such modules, described in more detail below, allow the aerosol delivery device's internal power source to be charged while on the move or in use. Additionally, such additional power modules can function to increase the power provided to the aerosol generator of the aerosol delivery device, allowing the aerosol delivery device to operate in a higher power mode. A further example of a module, also described in more detail below, is adding communication functionality to the device. Such a module can, for example, enable usage data recorded by the device to be communicated to cloud data storage for processing and analysis. The additional communication functionality may be something that the user only needs occasionally, for example, once a day or once a week. In such situations, a communications module may be temporarily added to the device to allow data to be transmitted from the device. Such a module allows additional communications capabilities to be selectively added to the aerosol delivery device when needed, without permanently adding additional size and weight of components to the device.
[0017] A user may wish to add additional functionality of multiple add-on modules to the aerosol delivery device simultaneously. For example, a user may wish to adjust the way the aerosol delivery device operates while using the device in a higher power heating mode, and to accomplish this, the user may connect a module configured to provide additional power and a module configured to provide an enhanced user interface to the aerosol delivery device. In such an arrangement, the add-on power module provides additional power to the aerosol delivery device to operate the aerosol generator in a higher power mode, and the add-on user interface module provides an enhanced user interface through which the user may adjust the settings and / or operation of the aerosol delivery device. This may allow the user to, for example, change settings while using the device in a high power mode, none of the functions being possible without the associated module being operably connected to the basic aerosol delivery device. In this example, once the user is satisfied with the settings, the user interface module may then be removed, allowing the device to operate in the set mode while still receiving additional power from the attached power module. It should be understood that this particular configuration of a power module and a user interface module is merely one of many possible combinations of two or more modules that a user may choose to use to add the functionality of multiple add-on modules to an aerosol delivery device.
[0018] It should also be understood that the components of the aerosol delivery device that are most susceptible to wear from use are the aerosol generator, e.g., the heater, and the battery. Thus, a further advantage of the present invention is that the aerosol delivery device can be easily and inexpensively replaced by the user when such components deteriorate from use. This is in contrast to more complex devices, where wear of such components requires repair of the components or the purchase of a new device, both of which are costly and inconvenient for the user. This also applies in the case of physical damage that may occur to the aerosol delivery device during daily use, where the aerosol delivery device can be easily and inexpensively replaced without the need to replace additional components (i.e., add-on modules) required for extended functions.
[0019] A first aspect of the present disclosure defines a module for use with an aerosol delivery device. The module comprises a housing and at least one connector configured to connect to the aerosol delivery device or another module. The connector is configured to be capable of forming an operable connection between the module and at least one of the other module and the aerosol delivery device. The connector may be a common connector, such as a USB Type-C connector, or the connector may include a dedicated design.
[0020] Forming an operable connection may involve physical engagement of a connector of the module with a connector of either another module or the aerosol delivery device. Such a physical connection may be achieved by the module comprising one or both of the male or female parts of a connector, such as a USB Type-C connector. Alternatively, the physical engagement may be achieved by an asexual connection. A physical connection has the advantage of being reliable and simple to design. In addition, a physical connection may provide an opportunity for tactile feedback to the user, where the user can feel and / or see when a physical connection between the module(s) and the aerosol delivery device or additional modules is made.
[0021] The connector may be configured such that no physical engagement is required. The operable connection may be achieved, for example, using a wireless data connection and / or a wireless power connection. Additionally, the module may be secured to another module and / or the aerosol delivery device, for example, using magnetic forces. A non-physical connection has the advantage that an external connector may be omitted, lowering the risk of damage to the connector during the life of the part, and simplifying the design of the housing of both the module and the aerosol delivery device / additional module. Additional securing of the module to another module and / or the aerosol delivery device is not required, but may be helpful in ensuring that the non-physical operable connection between the associated parts is reliable by maintaining contact between the module and the associated parts.
[0022] A further alternative may be to secure the devices together using a physical engagement while achieving an operative connection (i.e., a data connection and / or a power connection) wirelessly. Such a physical engagement may be achieved, for example, by an interference fit between the parts or via an external engagement member. A physical engagement has the advantage that a user can more easily determine if a connection between the parts has been made, for example, via a tactile signal or simply by being able to visually perceive or feel that a connection has been made. A wireless operative connection eliminates the use of power and / or data connections in the housings of the parts, thus simplifying the design and manufacturing requirements of the housings.
[0023] According to a first aspect of the present disclosure, the module is configured such that, during use, the module is operably connected to an aerosol delivery device, either directly or via one or more further modules. The module further comprises one or more components configured to provide additional functionality to the operably connected aerosol delivery device. This has the advantage that the aerosol delivery device can be simple, small, lightweight and inexpensive, while allowing additional functionality to be added to the device when desired, by operably connecting one or more modules.
[0024] In one example, the module further comprises one or more controllers, each controller configured to control at least one aspect of the functionality of the module. The controller may comprise a simple switch, e.g., a switch configured to activate and deactivate the supply of power from a power source. Alternatively, the controller may comprise one or more microchips that may be configured to control complex functionality of the module. The controller may be configured to allow direct control by a user of the module or one or more operably connected devices. Alternatively, the controller may be configured to automatically control functionality of the module or one or more operably connected devices, e.g., in response to a user's puff, or a combination thereof. Remote control of the device is also envisioned. Including one or more controllers has the advantage of increasing the functionality of the module.
[0025] In another example, the module includes an internal power source disposed within the housing of the module. The internal power source may be, for example, a rechargeable battery, such as a lithium-ion battery or a nickel-cadmium battery, or a capacitor. The internal power source may enable the module to have several functions, such as, for example, indicating the charge level of the internal power source to a user when not connected to an aerosol delivery device.
[0026] However, the primary function of a module with an internal power source is to provide additional power to the aerosol delivery device by charging the internal power source of the aerosol delivery device during use. This allows the aerosol delivery device to operate for extended periods of time without the need for a larger internal power source. Charging the internal power source of the aerosol delivery device by the module can optionally occur while the aerosol delivery device is being used by a user. The additional power provided by the module to the aerosol delivery device may allow the aerosol generator of the aerosol delivery device to operate at a higher power and / or temperature than normal use. The use of increased power may be referred to as a "boost mode." Activation of the boost mode when a module with an internal power source is operably connected to the aerosol delivery device may be automatic or may be activated by further user interaction. The choice between automatic activation or requiring further user input may be a preset choice learned and / or stored by the module, another module, and / or the aerosol delivery device. The module may also be configured to identify the operably attached device (either the aerosol delivery device or one or more other modules) and determine the power requirements of the operably attached device. Identification of the operably attached device may be automatic or by data communication between the module and the operably attached device. The module may be configured to automatically supply an appropriate amount of power to the operably attached device according to the identified power requirements of the operably attached device. This is advantageous because a module including an internal power source can power a wide range of possible aerosol delivery devices and / or modules.
[0027] In another example of a module with an internal power source, the module includes a means for wireless transmission of power. This may include a means for receiving power from an external power source, such as an external wireless charging pad. Alternatively or in addition, the means for wireless power transmission may be configured to transmit power to a further device outside the housing of the module. The further device may be another module, an aerosol delivery device, or an external device configured to receive power wirelessly. The module may comprise more than one means for wireless transmission of power, such that the module may transmit power to or from more than one device simultaneously. Transmitting power wirelessly is advantageous as it may eliminate the need for physical connectors to be placed on the housing of the module. This may simplify the design and manufacturing requirements of the housing of the module, and may also increase the safety and ease of use of the module. Furthermore, a module comprising a means for wirelessly transmitting and / or receiving power may add such functionality to an operably connected aerosol delivery device without adding to the size, weight, or cost of the aerosol delivery device.
[0028] In another example, the module may include one or more means for user interaction. Such means may consist of, for example, one or more buttons, dials, switches, knobs, etc., or a touch screen. The means for user interaction may also include means for communicating information to the user regarding, for example, the remaining charge of the internal power source. Such means for user interaction may consist of one or more lights (including LEDs), buzzers, clickers, speakers, tactile parts, screens, and / or other displays, etc. The means for user interaction may enable the user to control the aerosol delivery device, for example, to modify the heating profile. As mentioned above, if the module includes an internal power source configured to provide additional power to the aerosol delivery device, the means for user interaction may enable the user to select an optional "boost mode" to increase the power and / or temperature of a heater located within the aerosol delivery device. The means for user interaction may also enable the user to lock or unlock the device, which may increase safety and security. In examples where the module includes one or more means for user interaction, such as a button, the module may require the user to input an activation code into the means for user interaction to activate the aerosol delivery device. Alternatively, the module may be configured such that user identification is required to operably connect the module to the aerosol delivery device. In such examples, the aerosol delivery device is configured such that the user-defined identification requirements are retained after the module is removed from the aerosol delivery device. This example has the advantage of preventing unauthorized users from using the aerosol delivery device. The module may also be configured to automatically identify the aerosol delivery device when the aerosol delivery device is first connected to the module.
[0029] In another example, the module may include means for wireless communication with an external device. Examples of possible wireless communication protocols may be Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular network communication, etc. Wireless communication with the external device may enable data transmission between the module and the external device. Such data may include, for example, usage data that is backed up, reviewed, and / or analyzed using the external device. Data transmission may also enable the module to be configured according to user preferences with the external device. The external device may be, for example, a mobile phone, a tablet, a computer, etc.
[0030] In another example, the module may include a means for wireless transmission of power. The module may comprise two or more means for wireless transmission of power, such that the module may transmit power to or from two or more devices simultaneously. Transmitting power wirelessly is advantageous because it may eliminate the need to place a physical connector on the housing of the module. This may simplify the design and manufacturing requirements of the housing of the module and also increase the safety and ease of use of the module.
[0031] In any of the above examples, the module may further include a means for physically connecting to an external device. The physical connection may allow the module to be powered from an external device. The external device may be, for example, a plug connected to a wall outlet or a backup power source such as a battery or another energy storage device. This may allow a user to interact with the module, for example, to adjust pre-set user preferences or to review information regarding previous use of the aerosol delivery device, without the module being operably connected to the aerosol delivery device.
[0032] When the module is physically connected to an external device and the external device is supplying power to the module, the supplied external power may be directed by the controller to charge at least one of the power sources located in the module, i.e., the internal power source, the power source located in the further operably connected module, and the power source located in the operably connected aerosol delivery device. The module may be configured to allow the controller to determine the amount of power to be supplied to the module. The module may be further configured such that if the controller determines that the supplied power is insufficient to charge one or more of the internal power source of the module, the power source of the operably connected module, and the power source located in the operably connected aerosol delivery device, the controller preferentially directs the supplied power accordingly. The order in which the one or more power sources should be preferentially charged may be preset or configurable by the user. For example, it may be preferred to charge the power source of the operably connected aerosol delivery device before the other power sources. The module may be further configured such that if the externally supplied power is insufficient to charge either the internal power source of the module or the power sources to which the module is operably connected, no power is supplied to any of the power sources. The module may also be configured to alert a user that the externally provided power supply is insufficient to charge one or more of the power sources, which alert may be an audible, visual, and / or tactile indication. The module may be further configured to indicate to a user which, if any, of the power sources to which the module is operatively connected are being charged when an external power source is connected.
[0033] In further examples where the module comprises means for physically connecting the module to an external device, the connection may be configured to allow data transmission. Such a connection may, for example, include a standard data connector, such as a USB Type-C connector. The data connection may allow data to be exchanged with the external device. Such data may, for example, include usage information that is backed up, reviewed, and / or analyzed using the external device. Data transmission may also allow the module to be configured according to user preferences using the external device. The external device may, for example, be a mobile phone, a tablet, a computer, etc.
[0034] In a further example, the module further comprises an internal computer memory, disposed within the housing of the module and preferably being a non-volatile memory such that data stored therein is retained in the event of power loss. The internal computer memory may be configured to store user preferences. Such a module may enable the module to retain user preferences or other data, such as usage data of an operably attached aerosol delivery device.
[0035] In a further example of a module including an internal computer memory, the module is configured to retrieve data from an operably connected aerosol delivery device and store the preferences in the module's internal computer memory. Alternatively or additionally, the module is configured to copy user preferences stored in the module's internal computer memory to the operably connected aerosol delivery device. Such a module has the advantage that user preferences can be easily transferred from or to an operably connected aerosol delivery device. This may allow a user to, for example, implement previously set user preferences from an aerosol delivery device and quickly and easily apply these user preferences to a new aerosol delivery device. This may allow a user to periodically retrieve user preferences from the module, so that in the event of accidental loss or damage of the aerosol delivery device, a replacement device can be quickly and easily configured to the user's preferences.
[0036] It should be understood that some of the above examples can be combined with each other. For example, a module can include both user interaction and power functionality, or both user interaction and communication functionality. Although possible module functions may be described separately, their combination within a single module is not excluded.
[0037] According to a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an aerosol delivery device comprising a housing, an aerosol generator disposed within the housing, a power source disposed within the housing, and one or more connectors each configured to interact with a module. When the one or more modules are operably connected to the aerosol delivery device, during use, the operably connected one or more modules provide additional functionality to the aerosol delivery device.
[0038] According to a third aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a system comprising an aerosol delivery device and one or more modules, the one or more modules being operably connected to the aerosol delivery device, the operably connected being either a direct connection with the aerosol delivery device or a connection with one or more other modules, at least one of the one or more other modules being directly connected to the aerosol delivery device, the one or more operably connected modules providing additional functionality to the aerosol delivery device.
[0039] 1, a module 100 for use with an aerosol delivery device is shown generally as comprising a housing 102, a controller 108 disposed within the housing 102, a first connector 110, and a second connector 112, each configured to interface with either the aerosol delivery device or another module.
[0040] The housing 102 of the module 100 may be constructed from any suitable material. Metallic materials such as steel or aluminum may be used. Stainless steel and aluminum are inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and exhibit good corrosion resistance. A housing comprising a metallic material may also improve the dissipation of heat generated within the device to increase the comfort of the user during use, and may be more aesthetically pleasing than alternative options. A conductive material may be used, and a housing constructed from a conductive material may further act as an antenna to facilitate or improve wireless communication in examples where the module includes means for wireless communication, as described in more detail below. Alternatively, the housing may be made from plastic. Plastic is inexpensive, can be easily formed into the desired shape, and is non-conductive, which may help to increase the safety of the device. Examples of suitable plastic materials may be polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or a combination of PC and ABS, where PC and ABS are strong, tough, inexpensive, and can be easily formed into the required shape. PC and ABS may also be easily colored and decorated with surface paints within the plastic material structure, allowing the housing 102 to be easily decorated. Additionally, the plastic material may be advantageous in instances where the module comprises means for wireless communication, described in more detail below, where a separate antenna may be embedded in the plastic material of the housing or printed on the exterior and / or interior surface of the housing 102 to facilitate or enhance wireless communication. The housing 102 may be configured to be alterable, e.g., to allow a user to replace the housing 102 in order to change its appearance.
[0041] The module 100 includes at least one connector 110 that is configured to connect to a connector of another module or an aerosol delivery device. When connected to a connector of another device, the connector 110 of the module and the connector of the other device may be referred to as a "mating connector."
[0042] In some examples, the first connector 110 and the further connector are configured such that an operable connection with another module or aerosol delivery device is formed without physical engagement of the mating connector. If the housing 102 does not have any openings, the housing 102 may be water resistant in that the housing material is water resistant and the lack of openings in the housing prevents water from entering the internal components of the module. Means may further be provided for fastening the module 100 to at least one second device (the second device being another module or aerosol delivery device) without physical engagement of the mating connector. In one example, the module 100 comprises at least one magnet (or a portion of a magnetic material) arranged such that when the second device also comprises at least one magnet, the at least one magnet of the module and the at least one magnet of the second device fasten the devices to each other by magnetic force. In this example, the magnet(s) are positioned such that the module 100 and the second device are aligned in such a way that magnetic forces between the magnet(s) of the module 100 and the magnet(s) of the second device can operably connect the mating connectors. This type of alignment is particularly useful when the operable connection between the mating connectors is a wireless connection, and thus there is no additional physical engagement of the parts.
[0043] In some examples, the pair of connectors are configured to physically engage to be operably connected. In these examples, the housing 102 of the module 100 includes one or more openings to facilitate connection with other devices. In one example, the first connector 110 and the second connector 112 are each disposed adjacent to an opening in the housing 102 such that each of the connectors can physically engage a connector of another device when disposed within or at least adjacent to a respective opening in the housing 102.
[0044] In instances where the pair of connectors physically engage to provide an operable connection, at least one of the connectors may include a "male" portion configured to be inserted into a "female" portion of the corresponding connector. Each connector may include both male and female portions such that any connector may be connected to any other connector. However, it is preferred that the connectors include only male or female portions to minimize the number of male connector portions that are not connected to female connectors during use (i.e., non-connected male connectors). The male portions of the connectors must extend outwardly by nature. Thus, non-connected male connectors are more susceptible to accidental damage during use of the module than non-connected female connectors. Furthermore, non-connected male connectors may potentially damage external objects or cause discomfort to the user during use of the module.
[0045] In one example, the first connector 110 of the module 100 is the only male connector of the module 100. The module 100 may include one or more additional female connectors into which the male portion of a connector of another module or aerosol delivery device may be inserted. Preferably, the module cannot operate unless the first connector 110 is connected to another device (either another module or an aerosol delivery device). Thus, when the first connector 110 of the module 100 is connected to another device, it may be understood that a system including one or more such modules 100 operably connected to an aerosol delivery device during use does not have a module with a non-connected male connector.
[0046] In one example, the module 100 includes only the first connector 110 and no further connectors. The module according to this example may be connected to only one of another module or an aerosol delivery device. To simplify the design and manufacture of the module, a module 100 including only the first connector 110 may be preferred. It is preferred that the first connector 110 is a male connector.
[0047] In another example, the housing 102 of the module 100 may be configured such that when the module 100 is connected to the second device, the housing 102 secures the module 100 to the second device with an interference fit. Such an arrangement may be achieved, for example, by configuring the housing 102 of the module 100 such that the housing 102 is configured to at least partially surround or enclose the second device (or vice versa). Other types of physical engagement between the module 100 and the second device are also possible, such as a threaded or bayonet connection, whereby a portion of the housing 102 of the module includes a threaded or bayonet attachment that is inserted into a corresponding connector of the second device and twisted or turned to form a secure engagement (or vice versa). The housing 102 may also include one or more movable engagement members, such as a latch or spring-loaded button, or means for engaging such a movable member of the second device, to increase the security of the engagement with the second device. This type of physical engagement has the advantage that the user has a tactile indication as to the safety of the engagement.
[0048] The module 100 may comprise a means for connecting to an external device (other than an aerosol delivery device or another module), referred to herein as an "external connector" (not shown). The external connector configured to form a physical connection with an external device may be a commercially available connector, such as a USB Type-C connector or a proprietary connector. Alternatively, the external connector may be a wireless external connector configured to wirelessly connect to an external device. The wireless external connector may use, for example, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, or a cellular network connection. The external connector may enable the module 100 to receive power from an external device. Additionally or alternatively, the external connector may enable the exchange of data between the module 100 and the external device. Such data may include, for example, information regarding the use of the module. In embodiments in which an article containing an aerosol-generating material is consumed, such module usage data may enable, for example, automatically ordering additional consumables when needed.
[0049] The module 100 shown in FIG. 1 includes a controller 108, which may be configured to determine whether the connector 110 is operably connected to a second device. The controller 108 may also be configured to identify the second device when the connector 110 is detected to be operably connected to the second device. In addition, the controller 108 may be configured to communicate with the operably connected device. For example, the controller 108 may be configured to communicate information about the module 100 to the operably connected device. Alternatively or in addition, the controller 108 may be configured to receive information from the operably connected second device. The information communicated to the operably connected device may include, for example, the charge level of the power source 106 of the module 100. In another example, similar information may be communicated from the operably connected second device to the module 100. In an example where the module 100 includes a second connector 112 (and optionally further connectors), the controller may be configured to communicate with two or more directly connected devices simultaneously.
[0050] Referring to FIG. 2, an aerosol delivery device 200 is shown in schematic form. The aerosol delivery device 200 comprises a housing 202 (sometimes referred to as an "exterior cover"), an aerosol generator in the form of a heater 204 disposed within the housing 202, a power source 206 disposed within the housing 202 and connected to the heater via a controller 208, and a connector 210 configured to interact with a module. The aerosol delivery device 200 according to the invention is configured to function independently when not connected to an additional module. The aerosol delivery device 200 according to the invention may comprise a puff sensor (not shown) configured to detect when a user is inhaling on the aerosol delivery device 200. The aerosol delivery device 200 may be configured such that the heater 204 is activated when the puff sensor detects that a user is inhaling on the device 200. The puff sensor and the heater 204 may each be connected to a controller 208 such that activation of the heater 204 is controlled by the controller 208. The controller 208 may be configured to deactivate the heater 204 after a predetermined time. The controller 208 may also be configured to deactivate the heater 204 when a puff sensor detects that the user is no longer inhaling the device 200 or when a certain number of puffs have been made. The controller 208 may be connected to the power source 206 and configured to determine the remaining charge of the power source 206. The controller may be configured to prevent activation of the heater 204 when the power source 206 has insufficient charge. The amount of charge of the power source 206 that the controller 208 considers sufficient to activate the heater 204 may be an amount of charge that allows the heater 204 to complete a predetermined session.
[0051] In some examples, the first connector 210 and the further connector are configured such that an operable connection with the module is formed without physical engagement of the mating connector. In such an aerosol delivery device 200, a means for fixing the aerosol delivery device 200 to at least one module without physical engagement of the mating connector may further be provided. In one example, the aerosol delivery device 200 comprises at least one magnet (or a portion of a magnetic material), which is arranged such that when the module comprises at least one magnet, at least one magnet of the aerosol delivery device 200 and at least one magnet of the module fix the devices relative to each other by magnetic force. In this example, the one or more magnets are arranged such that the aerosol delivery device 200 and the module are aligned in such a way that the magnetic force between the magnet(s) of the aerosol delivery device 200 and the magnet(s) of the module can operably connect the mating connector. This type of alignment is particularly useful when the operable connection between the mating connectors is a wireless connection and therefore there is no additional physical engagement of the parts.
[0052] 3, a system is shown diagrammatically comprising an aerosol delivery device 200 and a module 100. A connector 210 of the aerosol delivery device 200 is directly connected to a first connector 110 of the module 100. In such a system, the module 100 may comprise a second connector 112 to which an additional module may be connected.
[0053] 4, a system is shown that includes an aerosol delivery device 200, a module 100, and a second module 300. The first connector 210 of the aerosol delivery device 200 is directly connected to the first connector 110 of the module 100, and the first connector 310 of the second module 300 is directly connected to the second connector 112 of the first module 100, such that the aerosol delivery device, the module 100, and the module 300 are connected in series. In this system, both the first module and the second module are operably connected to the aerosol delivery device, such that, during use, both the first module and the second module provide additional functionality to the aerosol delivery device.
[0054] As shown in FIG. 4, in use, the first connector 110 of the first module 100 may be connected to the aerosol delivery device 200, and the second connector 112 is connected to the first connector 310 of the second module 300. In such an arrangement, the controller 108 of the first module 100 may be configured to communicate with the aerosol delivery device 200 and the second module 300 simultaneously. The controller 308 of the second module 300 may also be configured to communicate with the directly connected module 100 and the operably connected aerosol delivery device 200. In an example where the aerosol delivery device 200 is operably connected to more than one module, it may be preferable that the controller 108 of the first module 100 (the first module 100 directly connected to the aerosol delivery device 200) is configured to have a system-wide "communication authority." Communication authority may mean that the controller 108 of the first module 100 is configured to be able to overall control the functions of the operably connected system. For example, during communication control, the controller 108 of the first module 100 may be configured to determine how to distribute power to the operably connected system from a power source included in one of the operably connected modules. In one example, the power source may or may not be included in the first module 100. In some embodiments, a module may be specifically configured to be able to control other modules, and in such embodiments, the module may need to be the "first module" in an operably connected system with two or more operably connected modules, and therefore must be directly connected to the aerosol delivery device 200. In other embodiments, all modules may be configured to have communication authority over the entire operably connected system with two or more operably connected modules, as they may function as the "first module" if they are directly connected to the aerosol delivery device 200.
[0055] 5, another system is shown that includes an aerosol delivery device 200, a module 100, and a second module 300. In this example, the aerosol delivery device includes a first connector 210 and a second connector 212. The first connector 110 of the module 100 is directly connected to the first connector 210 of the aerosol delivery device 200. The first connector 310 of the second module 300 is also directly connected to the second connector 212 of the aerosol delivery device 200, so that the module 100 and the second module 300 are arranged in parallel with each other at one end of the aerosol delivery device 200. In this system, the module 100 and the second module 300 are also each operably connected to the aerosol delivery device such that, during use, both the first module and the second module provide additional functionality to the aerosol delivery device.
[0056] 6, module 400 includes a first connector 410 and three additional connectors 412, 414, 416. In one example, all of the connectors are configured to physically engage with connectors of other modules or aerosol delivery devices. The first connector 410 may be male and all of the additional connectors may be female. In examples where the first connector 410 is a male connector and the module further includes at least two additional connectors, each of which is a female connector, the module may be referred to as a "hub-type" module.
[0057] In the example according to FIG. 6, the first connector 410 is a male connector and the remaining connectors 412, 414, 416 are all female connectors. In this example, the first connector 410 can be connected to a female connector of another module or aerosol delivery device. The module 400 can also be connected to male connectors of up to three additional devices using the additional connectors 412, 414, 416. In one example, this type of hub-type module 400 can be used with an aerosol delivery device that only has a single female connector. In this configuration, the first connector 410 of the hub-type module 400 is connected to the first connector of the aerosol delivery device. Up to three additional modules can then be connected to the hub-type module 400, each of which can be connected to one of the additional connectors 412, 414, 416. Such a configuration allows multiple modules to be operably connected to an aerosol delivery device, even if the aerosol delivery device only has a single connector. The hub-style connector 400 preferably includes at least three connectors, namely a first connector 410 and two or more additional connectors. Preferably, the first connector 410 is a male connector and the two or more additional connectors are female connectors. The controller 408 of the hub-style module 400 is preferably configured to communicate with the other operably connected modules. The controller 408 is preferably configured to direct the function of the other operably connected modules, i.e., the controller 408 directly controls the function of the other operably connected modules.
[0058] 7 shows a further example of an aerosol delivery device 500 comprising a housing 502, a power source 506, and a first connector 510, the housing comprising an opening 503 into which an article comprising an aerosol-generating material 800 can be inserted. The aerosol delivery device 500 also comprises an aerosol generator in the form of a heater, which is not shown.
[0059] FIG. 8 illustrates another example of a system including an aerosol delivery device 500 and a module 600. The module 600 includes a first connector 610 configured to connect to a first connector 510 of the aerosol delivery device. In this example, the module 600 is configured such that the module 600 partially surrounds the aerosol delivery device 500 when the first connector 510 of the aerosol delivery device 500 is operably connected to the first connector 610 of the module 600. Such an arrangement increases the strength and durability of the connection between the aerosol delivery device 500 and the module 600, providing an overall robust system. Such an arrangement can, for example, reduce the likelihood that the operative connection will be accidentally disconnected during use. Such an arrangement can also be more ergonomic than other arrangements during use, enhancing user comfort. As shown in FIG. 8, the aerosol delivery device 500 and the module 600 are configured to be slid into place such that the aerosol delivery device 500 operably connects to the module 600. In such a configuration, the module 600 and the aerosol delivery device 500 help to properly align the two connectors. For example, to properly align the first connector 510 of the aerosol delivery device 500 and the first connector 610 of the module 600, the housing 602 of the module 600 can include a guide groove into which a protrusion disposed on the housing 502 of the module 500 can slide.
[0060] 8, the module 600 includes a second connector 612 and a third connector 614 disposed on a side of the module 600 and configured to operably connect to additional modules. It should be understood that the module 600 according to this example may include additional connectors, and that either the second connector or the additional connector may be located anywhere on the module 600.
[0061] 9 and 10 show another example in which the aerosol delivery device 500 is connected to the module 700. Similar to the example shown in FIG. 7, in these illustrated examples, the module 700 is configured to partially surround the aerosol delivery device 500. The first connector of the module 700 is not shown, but is configured to operably connect to the first connector (not shown) of the aerosol delivery device 500, similar to FIG. 7. In FIG. 10, a second connector 712 and a third connector 714 are shown to be disposed on the bottom surface of the module 700. Similar to the example of FIG. 8, the number of additional connectors may be less or more. As in FIG. 8, the aerosol delivery device 500 and the module 700 may include guide grooves and corresponding protrusions configured to help properly align the mating connectors when connecting the aerosol delivery device 500 and the module 700.
[0062] It should be understood that the above-described embodiments are illustrative of the invention. Further embodiments of the invention are envisioned. It should be understood that features described with respect to any one embodiment may be used alone or in combination with other features described, or in combination with one or more features of other embodiments or combinations of other embodiments. Moreover, equivalents and modifications not described above may be used without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
