Description

Technical Field

[0001] Related Applications This application claims the benefit of U.S. Non-Provisional Patent Application No. 17 / 039,393, filed Sep. 30, 2020, and French Patent Application No. 2012222, filed Nov. 26, 2020, each of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.

[0002] The present invention relates to makeup removal and cleansing compositions comprising a novel antibacterial system that provides a makeup removal effect while minimizing irritation to the eye and other tissues.

Background Art

[0003] Typically, makeup removal and cleansing are used over the entire face, and some are necessarily used around the eyes. In fact, in addition to long-lasting lip products, there are makeup cleansings specially designed to remove stubborn makeup such as regular or waterproof mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, glitter, long-lasting foundation, etc. Such cleansing may require repeated pulling and rubbing on the skin, especially on and around the delicate eye tissues, and may inherently irritate the skin. Furthermore, most makeup removal products contain antibacterial and preservative agents that can approach the eyes during the makeup removal process and, in some cases, accidentally come into contact, resulting in stinging pain and a burning sensation around the eyes.

[0004] Accordingly, there is a need for cosmetic compositions, particularly cleansing and cleansing wipe articles, that provide makeup removal and have the advantage of protection from microbial growth without causing irritation to the eyes or during storage. These compositions and articles desirably exclude antibacterial, preservative, and cleansing components that are irritants such as pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, and parabens without sacrificing cleansing and antibacterial efficacy.

[0005] According to the present disclosure, when the new antibacterial system is used in a makeup removing or cleansing composition, unexpectedly, compared with a similarly formulated composition containing a conventional antibacterial system, eye irritation is significantly reduced or does not occur at all.

[0066] Substrate According to various embodiments, in some embodiments, an article is provided that includes a solid substrate infused with the antibacterial system of the present invention, in the form of a makeup removing composition. The article is formed from a synthetic material or from natural, natural-derived, regenerated, or recycled natural fibers that are biodegradable and sustainably sourced.

[0067] According to some embodiments, the substrate is a non-woven material. A general description of non-woven materials is provided in Riedel “Nonwoven Bonding Methods and Materials”, Nonwoven World (1987). These substrates are obtained according to the usual methods of non-woven material preparation techniques. When the substrate is a non-woven material, those made from a strong non-woven fabric that does not pill, does not fall apart when touching the skin, and does not fuzz can be used. In particular, for removing eye makeup, at least one side needs to be absorbent and soft. Suitable non-woven materials include, for example, Ultraloft 15285-01, Ultraloft 182-008, Ultraloft 182-010, and Ultraloft 182-016 manufactured by BBA, those sold under the names of Vilmed M1519 Blau, Vilmed M1550N, and 112-132-3 manufactured by Freudenberg, those sold under the name of Norafin 11601-010B manufactured by Jacob Holm Industries, flock non-woven fabrics sold under the names of Univel 109 and Univel 119 manufactured by Uni Flockage, and those made of viscose / PLA supplied by Sandler.

[0068] According to some embodiments including the article, a water-insoluble substrate is used. The water-insoluble substrate can include one or more layers and can be selected from the group consisting of a woven material, a non-woven material, a foam, a sponge, and a stuffing cotton as a sheet, a sphere, or a film. In particular, it can be a non-woven substrate based on fibers of natural origin (fibers made of linen, wool, cotton, silk, viscose, bamboo) or fibers of synthetic origin (cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl derivatives, polyesters such as poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyolefins such as polyethylene (PET) or polypropylene, polyamides such as nylon, or acrylic derivatives) and mixtures thereof such as viscose / PET, polylactic acid (PLA), or viscose / polylactic acid (viscose / PLA).

[0069] According to one embodiment, the substrate is a nonwoven material made of hydroentangled viscose or a nonwoven material made of a viscose / microviscose blend. In some particular embodiments, the article comprises nonwoven fibers, the fibers being formed from natural, biodegradable, sustainably sourced fibers selected from (1) naturally occurring fibers including one or a combination of pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, and cotton; (2) natural fibers including one or a combination of hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana, and pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fibers including cotton, and combinations thereof. According to one embodiment, the substrate is a nonwoven material formed from a biodegradable material such as lyocell.

[0070] According to some embodiments, the article can include one or more layers with the same or different properties, including elasticity, flexibility, and other properties suitable for the desired application. The substrate can include two portions with different elastic properties, as described in WO-A-99 / 13861, a single layer with different densities, as described in WO-A-99 / 25318, or two layers with different textures, as described in WO-A-98 / 18441. According to some embodiments, when the article is used on the body, the article can include at least one roughened surface to allow simultaneous massaging or rubbing of the skin.

[0071] According to various embodiments, the article can have any size and any shape suitable for a desired purpose. 2 and 0.1m 2 Between or 0.01m 2 and 0.05m 2 The weight of the substrate can range between 30 gsm and 200 gsm (grams per square meter), or between 40 gsm and 60 gsm.

[0072] According to various embodiments, the impregnation degree of the composition onto the substrate is generally in the range of 100% to 1000% of the weight of the substrate, in some embodiments about 150% to about 700%, or about 250% to about 400%. Techniques for impregnating the substrate with the composition are well-known and can be applied to the present invention in its entirety. Generally, the impregnating composition is heated and added to the substrate by one or more techniques including dipping, coating, spraying, and the like.

Example

[0073] Example 1: Raw Materials

Table 1

[0074] Example 2: Invention Example: Various representative embodiments of the composition of the present invention are illustrated herein. In some cases, the composition is antibacterial. In some embodiments, the composition is a makeup remover in the form of one of an O / W emulsion, a W / O emulsion, or in micellar water, in a makeup removing wipe, or in a two-phase (or multi-phase) makeup removing composition. In some specific exemplary embodiments, the composition is a makeup remover comprising an antibacterial composition.

[0075] Exemplary embodiments of the composition of the present invention in the form of a cleansing and makeup removing composition (not penetrated into the substrate) according to the present disclosure are shown in Table 2.

Table 2

[0076] Example 1 and Example 2 of the present invention each contain an antibacterial system that does not contain (or is essentially free of) phenoxyethanol and pentylene glycol, and each contains the antibacterial agents 4-hydroxyacetophenone and piroctone olamine, and are essentially the same composition as a commercially available product sold under the trade name DERMABLEND MAKEUP DISSOLVER, except for the above. As reported in more detail in connection with the consumer tests, the above table shows that each of the two compositions of the present invention is substantially or entirely free of irritation, particularly when compared to the specifically tested comparative compositions and to the overall eye irritation of the category of comparative subjects containing a representative antibacterial system.

[0077] Example 3: Comparative Example Exemplary embodiments of comparative examples in the form of cleansing and makeup removing compositions (not penetrated into the substrate) according to the present disclosure are shown in Table 3.

Table 3

[0078] Comparative Example 1 is a commercially available product sold under the trade name DERMABLEND MAKEUP DISSOLVER and contains the antibacterial agents phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol (representatives of typical antibacterial systems used in many cosmetics in the art at the time of this application). Comparative Example 2 is the same as Comparative Example 1, except that phenoxyethanol has been replaced by the antibacterial 4-hydroxyacetophenone. Comparative Example 3 is the same as Comparative Example 1, except that the composition also contains the antibacterial ethylhexylglycerin. Comparative Example 4 is the same as Comparative Example 2, except that hydroxyacetophenone has been replaced by pentylene glycol. As reported in more detail in connection with the consumer tests, the above table shows that each of the four comparative examples was associated with moderate to high irritation.

[0079] Example 4: Antibacterial Agent Challenge Experiment As shown in the following table, experiments were conducted using each of the compositions of the present invention and the comparative compositions, and their antibacterial effects against a series of microorganisms were evaluated. The results are shown in Tables 4 to 11. [Table 4] [Table 5] [Table 6] [Table 7] [Table 8] [Table 9] [Table 10] [Table 11]

[0080] Example 5: Consumer Survey on the Effectiveness of Eye Irritation and Makeup Removal (MUR) A consumer survey was conducted to evaluate the eye irritation and / or discomfort and the effectiveness of MUR of the compositions of the present invention and the comparative compositions. Samples of Example 1 of the present invention, Comparative Example 1, and Comparative Example 4 were provided to a cohort of 10 consumers. The consumers used the products daily for two weeks and then participated in the survey after two weeks of use. The eye irritation / discomfort and the effectiveness of MUR were reported using a rating scale of 1 to 5 as follows.

[0081] Eye irritation / discomfort. Scale 1 - 5: 1 = No stinging pain or discomfort, 5 = Very stinging & uncomfortable

[0082] Effectiveness of MUR. Scale 1 - 5: 1 = no removal or difficult to remove, 5 = easy to completely remove

[0083] Table 12 shows the results indicating generally comparable (with respect to the effectiveness of MUR) and excellent performance (with respect to eye irritation) of the compositions of the present invention as compared to the comparative compositions. (Note: If described, the subject * stopped using Comparative Composition 1 because the eyes stung after a single application). [Table 12]

[0084] Example 6: Invention examples and comparative examples of makeup removing wipe products. Table 13 shows the eye irritation and MUR tests of the MUR liquid formulations of the invention examples and comparative examples, and the corresponding MUR wipes. All wipes were prepared by impregnating a lyocell nonwoven substrate with the liquid formulation at an impregnation rate of 320%. The results clearly showed significantly reduced eye irritation and excellent microchallenge results for Invention Example 3 as compared to the comparative examples. [Table 13 - 1] [Table 13 - 2]

[0085] Although the present disclosure has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, those skilled in the art will understand that various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present disclosure, and equivalents may replace its elements. Further, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the present disclosure without departing from the essential scope thereof. Accordingly, the present disclosure is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed as the best mode contemplated for carrying out the present disclosure, but is intended to include all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.

[0086] As used herein, the articles “a” and “an,” when applied to any feature in the embodiments of the present disclosure described herein and in the claims, mean one or more. The use of “a” and “an” is not intended to limit the meaning to a single feature unless specifically stated to be limiting. The article “the” preceding a singular or plural noun or noun phrase indicates a specified function and may have a singular or plural meaning depending on the context in which it is used. The adjective “any” means any one, some, or all, without distinction, of any amount.

[0087] As used herein, “at least one” means one or more and thus includes individual components and mixtures / combinations thereof.

[0088] The transitional terms "comprising," "consisting essentially of," and "consisting of" in their original and modified forms, when used in the appended claims, define the claims with respect to whether additional claim elements or steps, if any, not recited are excluded from the scope of the claim(s). The term "comprising" is intended to be inclusive or open-ended and does not exclude additional unrecited elements, methods, steps, or materials. The term "consisting of" excludes elements, steps, or materials other than those specified in the claim, and in the latter case, excludes impurities ordinarily associated with the specified material(s). The term "consisting essentially of" limits the claim to those things that do not materially affect the basic and novel characteristics of the claimed disclosure, including the specified element(s), step(s), or material(s). All materials and methods described herein that embody the present disclosure can be more specifically defined in alternative embodiments by any of the transitional terms "comprising," "consisting essentially of," and "consisting of."

[0089] The terms "free of" and "lacking" indicate that a measurable excluded substance is definitely not present in the composition and is typically 0 wt% based on the total weight of the composition. The term "essentially free of" means that it is preferred that no excluded substances are present in the composition, but very small amounts of excluded substances may be included in the compositions of the present invention, provided that these amounts do not materially affect the effective properties of the composition. In particular, "essentially free of" means that the excluded substance may be present in the composition in an amount of less than about 0.1 wt% based on the total weight of the composition.

[0091] Unless otherwise indicated, all percentages and ratios are calculated by weight. All percentages are calculated based on the entire composition unless otherwise indicated. Generally, unless otherwise expressly stated herein, the "weight" or "amount" used herein with respect to the percentage amount of a component refers to the amount of the raw material containing the component, and the raw material may be described herein as containing less than 100% and up to 100% of the activity of the component. Thus, the weight percentage of the active substance in the composition is expressed as the amount of the raw material containing the active substance used, and may or may not reflect the final percentage of the active substance, which depends on the weight percentage of the active substance in the raw material.

[0092] All ranges and amounts shown herein are intended to include sub-ranges and amounts using any of the disclosed points as endpoints. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, such as 2% to 8%, such as 3% to 5%" is intended to encompass ranges such as "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", etc. 。More It should be understood that when the amount of a component is indicated, unless otherwise specified, it is intended to represent the amount of the active substance.

[0093] Although the numerical ranges and parameters indicating the broad scope of the present disclosure are approximations, the numerical values described in specific examples are reported as accurately as possible unless otherwise indicated. However, any numerical value inherently contains certain errors that necessarily result from the standard deviation recognized during each of their test measurements. The following examples serve to illustrate embodiments of the present disclosure but are not intended to be limiting in nature.

[0094] All publications and patent applications cited herein are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety, as if each individual publication or patent application was specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated by reference, and for all purposes. In the event of any conflict between the present disclosure and a publication or patent application incorporated herein by reference, the present disclosure shall control.
