Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a sunscreen or daily care composition comprising hexyl 2-[4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoyl]benzoate (INCI hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate) and at least one water-soluble UVA filter, and not containing 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (INCI oxybenzone) and ethylhexyl-2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl-acrylate (INCI octocrylene). Further, the present invention relates to the use of said composition for reducing the staining of fabrics and for promoting the washability of sunscreen or daily care compositions.

Background Art

[0002] UV radiation causes harmful effects on human skin. In addition to the acute effects of sunburn on the skin, UV radiation is also known to increase the risk of skin cancer. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to UV-A and UV-B light can cause phototoxic and photoallergic reactions in the skin and can accelerate skin aging.

[0003] To protect human skin from UV radiation, there are various ultraviolet defense UV filters (also called UV absorbers) including UVA filters, UVB filters and broad-spectrum filters. These filters are added to sunscreen or cosmetic compositions. The UV filter may be either an organic or inorganic, particulate or non-particulate compound, all of which have a high absorption effect in the UV light range. Generally, UV light can be divided into UV-A radiation and UV-B radiation. Depending on the position of the absorption maximum, the UV filter can be divided into a UVA filter and a UVB filter. When a UV filter absorbs both UV-A light and UV-B light, it is called a broad-spectrum absorber.

[0004] Since 2006, it has been recommended by the European Commission that all sunscreen or cosmetic compositions should have a UV-A protection factor that is at least one third of the stated sun protection factor (SPF), where the sun protection factor mainly refers to UV-B protection.

[0005] However, the prior art UV filters known for use in sunscreen or cosmetic compositions have certain drawbacks. In particular, the drawbacks of certain UV filters are mentioned, and they are often the subject of discussion due to concerns about health and the environment, despite being approved for use in sunscreen or cosmetic compositions. The UV filters under discussion are, for example, octocrylene, oxybenzone, homosalate, ethylhexyl salicylate or ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. Therefore, there is a need for a daily-use sunscreen or cosmetic composition that is effective in protecting against ultraviolet rays and does not contain the UV filters under discussion.

[0006] Furthermore, sunscreen or cosmetic compositions can adhere to fabrics or textiles and cause fabric staining. Considering that certain UV filters have low solubility in water, the resulting stains are difficult to remove during fabric washing.

[0007] Therefore, it is desirable to reduce fabric staining and / or promote the washability of the sunscreen composition from the fabric without reducing UV-A protection.

[0008] EP2837407A2 discloses a fragrance-stable cosmetic composition comprising one or more UV filters selected from triazine derivatives, titanium dioxide, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and / or diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, and not containing octocrylene, and not containing ethylhexyl salicylate, octocrylene, homomethyl salicylate and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate.

[0009] EP3093008A1 relates to a sunscreen composition that does not contain octocrylene and contains one or more salicylates selected from hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate, phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, and ethylhexyl salicylate and homosalate.

[0010] EP3093007A1 discloses a cosmetic composition comprising a combination of UV filters of hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, and one or more salicylates selected from ethylhexyl salicylate and homosalate, and which may further not contain oxybenzone, octocrylene, and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor.

[0011] EP3093006 relates to a sunscreen composition that contains alcohol and does not contain octocrylene. The cosmetic composition comprises a combination of UV filters of hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, and bis-ethylhexylphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, and the composition contains one or more alcohols.

[0012] EP3195853A1 discloses a sunscreen composition that does not contain octocrylene, wherein the cosmetic composition comprises a combination of UV filters of hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate, diethylbutamidotriazone, and ethylhexyl triazone.

[0013] EP3351236A1 relates to a cosmetic composition comprising a combination of UV filters of hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, and polyglycerol fatty acid ester, and which does not contain 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, oxybenzone, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate, and octocrylene.

[0014] US2003 / 0161793A1 discloses a topically applicable cosmetic / dermatological sunscreen composition that does not contain p-methylbenzylidene camphor but contains at least one UV screening dibenzoylmethane compound and at least one UV screening amino-substituted 2-hydroxybenzophenone compound of structural formula (I).

[0015] DE60022411T2 discloses a cosmetic composition for topical application that contains at least one specific bis-resorcinyltriazine derivative and at least one UV filter containing at least two benzazolyl groups per molecule.

[0016] EP3354253A2 describes a method for reducing fabric staining by incorporating hexyl diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl benzoate into a cosmetic composition.

Modes for Carrying Out the Invention

[0056] Before describing the preferred embodiments of the present invention in detail, important definitions for understanding the present invention are shown.

[0057] As used in this specification and the appended claims, the singular forms "a" and "an" also include their respective plurals unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. In the context of the present invention, the terms "about" and "approximately" describe an interval of accuracy that a person skilled in the art would understand to still guarantee the technical effect of the feature in question. This term typically indicates a deviation of ±20%, preferably ±15%, more preferably ±10%, and even more preferably ±5% from the numerical value shown. It is understood that the term "comprising" is not limiting. For the purposes of the present invention, the term "consisting of" is considered a preferred embodiment of the term "comprising". When a group below in this specification is defined to include at least a certain number of embodiments, this also means, preferably, including a group consisting of only these embodiments.

[0058] Furthermore, terms such as "first", "second", "third" or "(i)", "(ii)", "(iii)", "(iv)", etc. in this specification and the claims are used to distinguish similar elements and are not necessarily used to describe an order or time series. It is understood that such terms are interchangeable under appropriate circumstances and that the embodiments of the present invention described in this specification can be operated in other orders than those described or illustrated herein.

[0059] As used herein, the term "free of" in the context of a composition of the invention not containing a particular compound or group of compounds that may be combined in a collective name means that the composition contains less than 0.8% by weight of said compound or group of compounds, based on the total weight of the composition. Further, the composition according to the invention preferably contains less than 0.5% by weight of said compound or group of compounds, and preferably the composition contains no amount of said compound or group of compounds. The same definition applies to "does not comprise".

[0060] The term "sun protection composition" refers to any topical product that reflects and / or absorbs a specific portion of UV radiation. Thus, it is understood that the term "sun protection composition" includes not only sun protection compositions but also any cosmetic composition that provides UV protection. The term "topical product" refers to a product applied to the skin and can refer to, for example, a spray, lotion, cream, oil or gel. A sun protection composition may contain one or more active agents, such as organic or inorganic UV filters, and other components or additives, such as emulsifiers, emollients, viscosity modifiers, stabilizers, preservatives or fragrances.

[0061] The term "daily care composition" refers to any topical product that reflects or absorbs a specific portion of UV radiation and is used as a daily care product for the human body, such as for the face, body or hair. A daily care composition may contain one or more active agents, such as organic or inorganic UV filters, and other components or additives, such as emulsifiers, emollients, viscosity modifiers, stabilizers, preservatives or fragrances.

[0062] As used herein, the term "sun protection factor (SPF)" indicates how well the skin is protected from mainly UV-B radiation by a sunscreen composition. In particular, this index indicates how much longer protected skin can be exposed to the sun without burning compared to untreated skin. For example, when a sunscreen composition with an SPF of 15 is uniformly applied to the skin of a person who would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, this sunscreen allows a person skilled in the art to stay in the sun 15 times longer. In other words, SPF 15 means that when the sunscreen is applied in a uniform thickness at a dosage of 2 milligrams per square centimeter (mg / cm 2 ), the UV radiation that causes sunburn reaching the skin is reduced to 1 / 15.

[0063] The term "UV filter", as used herein, refers to an organic or inorganic compound that can absorb or reflect UV radiation caused by sunlight. UV filters can be classified based on their UV protection curve as UV-A, UV-B, or broad-spectrum filters. In the context of this application, broad-spectrum filters also provide UV-A protection and may thus be listed as UV-A filters. In other words, preferred UV-A filters also include broad-spectrum filters.

[0064] Furthermore, UV filters can be classified according to their solubility behavior, for example, as water-soluble UV filters, oil-soluble UV filters, or particulate UV filters.

[0065] Water-soluble UV filters have a solubility in water of at least 2% by weight, preferably at least 3% by weight, more preferably at least 5% by weight.

[0066] The particulate UV filters can be further divided into organic particulate UV filters and inorganic particulate UV filters. The organic particulate UV filters are based on organic compounds, while the inorganic particulate UV filters are based on inorganic compounds such as titanium dioxide. The particulate UV filters in the sunscreen composition are present in particulate form because their solubility in the sunscreen composition, i.e., the water and the cosmetic oil contained therein, is less than 0.01% by weight, preferably less than 0.05% by weight. Preferably, the particulate UV filter has a particle size D N 50 determined by light scattering of less than 2000 nm, preferably less than 1000 nm N 50 refers to the particle size value at which half of the population is less than that value and half of the population is greater than that value, i.e., the median value of the particle size volume distribution.

[0067] Hexyl 2-[4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzoyl]benzoate (INCI Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate) is an oil-soluble UV-A filter with a maximum absorption at 354 nm. Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate has excellent photo-stability for long-term skin protection and provides an effective shield against UV-A I and UV-A II radiation. It is sold by BASF under the trade name Uvinul® A Plus.

[0068] Ethylhexyl-2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl-acrylate (INCI Octocrylene) is an oil-soluble organic UV-B filter with a maximum absorption at 302 nm. It is known to provide a broad range of UV-B absorbance for a balanced UV protection and is an effective stabilizer for photo-unstable UV filters. Octocrylene is sold by BASF under the trade name Uvinul® N 539 T.

[0069] 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (INCI oxybenzone) absorbs UV-A and UV-B light and is thus a so-called broad-spectrum UV filter. Oxybenzone can be applied in sun protection compositions or daily care compositions in amounts of 1% to 6%. Furthermore, it is sold under the trade names Eusolex 4360, Escalol 567 and Neo-Helipan BB.

[0070] 2-Ethylhexyl-(2E)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl) acrylate (INCI ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate) is an odorless and colorless UV-B filter having a maximum absorption at 310 nm. It is a good solvent for other crystalline UV filters. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is sold by BASF under the trade name Uvinul® MC 80.

[0071] The term "paraben" refers to a class of preservatives used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions. They are commonly used due to their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. The chemical structure of parabens is based on esters of para-hydroxybenzoate or para-hydroxybenzoic acid, for example methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben or heptylparaben.

[0072] The definition of "broad-spectrum" protection (also called broad-range spectrum or broad-range protection) is based on the "critical wavelength". For a broad-spectrum effective range, both UV-B and UV-A protection must be provided. According to US requirements, a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm is required to achieve broad-spectrum protection. Furthermore, all sun protection or cosmetic compositions should have a UVA protection index of at least one third of the indicated sun protection factor (SPF), for example, if a sun protection composition has an SPF of 30, the UVA protection index should be at least 10, as recommended by the European Commission.

[0073] The term "fabric staining" as used herein refers to the observation that sunscreen compositions, particularly those providing good UV-A protection, leave yellow stains on fabrics. Since sunscreen compositions often come into contact with fabrics during or after application to human skin and stains are observed on the fabrics, this is undesirable. Fabric staining can be measured by L*a*b as outlined in detail below.

[0074] The term "washability" as used herein describes how well the stains on the fabric caused by the sunscreen composition can be removed from the fabric after a certain number of washing cycles. To evaluate washability, fabric staining is measured before and after one or more washing cycles. The washing cycles are carried out at a temperature of 30 °C to 50 °C using a commercially available liquid washing gel. Typically, the difference in fabric staining after 1 to 3 washing cycles is determined.

[0129] In relation to the above preferred embodiments, it is understood that when a sunscreen or daily care composition contains two or more additives, combinations of additives as defined above are also part of the present invention.

[0130] In connection with the above-described preferred and particularly preferred embodiments, the sunscreen or daily care composition may be present in a wide variety of presentation forms in its final formulation, including - liquid formulations as W / O, O / W, O / W / O, W / O / W or PIT emulsions and all kinds of microemulsions; - gels; - oils, creams, milks or lotions; - powders, lacquers, tablets or cosmetics; - sticks; - sprays (spray by propellant gas or pump spray) or aerosols; - foams; - pastes It is understood that these are included.

[0131] As indicated above, in another aspect, the present invention relates to the use of a sunscreen or daily care composition as defined above, in particular as defined in the first and second embodiments, for reducing the soiling of fabrics by the sunscreen or daily care composition.

[0132] The staining of the fabric caused by the sunscreen composition is preferably measured by the so-called L*a*b method. By this method, the color difference between two samples can be specified numerically. The advantage of this method is that it does not depend on the device used to measure the color. Instead, the color difference can be determined based on numerical values for different colors. As used herein, to determine the staining of the fabric by the sunscreen composition, the color difference between the stain of the sunscreen composition on the fabric substrate and the fabric alone is determined. Thus, the various sunscreen compositions and their fabric staining characteristics can be measured by comparing the color of the stain on the fabric substrate with the color of the fabric alone. The smaller the color difference, the less fabric staining is observed. Similarly, by determining the color difference between the stain of the sunscreen composition on the fabric substrate and the fabric alone after one or more washing cycles, the possibility of reducing the staining of the fabric after washing, i.e., the washability, can be determined. The color difference is expressed in absolute color coordinates and can be called delta Δ. First, the colors of the two samples are measured. Then, the difference can be calculated using the CIE L*a*b coordinates, which are the obtained colorimetric analysis values. The L*a*b color space defined by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is modeled according to the opponent color theory. This theory states that two colors cannot be red and green simultaneously, or yellow and blue simultaneously. The following equation is used to determine the total color difference between two samples. ΔE* = [ΔL*2 + Δa*2 + Δb*2]1 / 2

[0133] In this regard, L* indicates lightness, a* is the red / green coordinate, and b* is the yellow / blue coordinate. The delta values for L*(ΔL*), a*(Δa*), and b*(Δb*) can be positive or negative. The total difference indicated by ΔE* is always positive. ΔL*(L* sample 1 - L* sample 2) = difference in lightness and darkness (+ is lighter, - is darker). Δa*(a* sample 1 - a* sample 2) = difference in red and green (+ is more red, - is more green). Δb*(b* sample 1 - b* sample 2) = difference in yellow and green (+ is more yellow, - is more green). ΔE* = total color difference.

[0134] To determine the contamination of the fabric according to the present invention, the color of the stain on the fabric is compared with the color of the fabric alone. Preferably, a white fabric is used. When the stain is only yellow, ΔE* ≒ Δb*, and the visibility of the stain of the sunscreen composition is represented by Δb*. Since the color of the stain of the sunscreen composition is typically yellow, for the purposes of the present invention, ΔE* is considered to be the same as Δb*.

[0135] In another aspect, the present invention relates to the use of a sunscreen or daily care composition as defined above, particularly as defined in the first and second embodiments, to promote the washability of the sunscreen or daily care composition from the fabric.

[0136] As used herein, washability refers to the degree to which the stain of the sunscreen composition on the fabric can be removed by washing. The washability, i.e., removability, of the stain of the sunscreen composition can be determined by determining the color difference of the stain by the above L*a*b* method before and after one or more washing cycles.

Examples

[0137] The present invention is further illustrated by the following examples.

[0138] Example Method for manufacturing a sunscreen composition For each test sunscreen composition, the components of part A and the components of part B as shown in Table 1 below were combined, heated to 80°C respectively, where part A was added to part B while stirring, and further homogenized. Phase C, if present, was premixed with an ultra turrax device and added to phases A and B. Subsequently, the sunscreen composition was cooled to room temperature while stirring, and the pH of each composition was adjusted to be above 7.00.

[0139] All amounts referred to in the following tables refer to the respective amounts as weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

[0142] The calculated SPF value for the comparative composition is 12.

[0143] The calculated SPF value for Composition 1 is 17.

[0144] Sunblock composition For each test sunblock composition, the components of Part A and the components of Part B as shown in Table 2 below were combined, each heated to 80 °C, whereupon Part A was added to Part B with stirring and further homogenized. Phase C, if present, was premixed with an ultra turrax device and added to Phases A and B. Subsequently, the sunblock composition was cooled to room temperature, then Part D was added with stirring, and finally, if present, Part E was added with stirring, and the pH of each composition was adjusted to above 7.00.

[0145]

Table 2

[0146] Measurement of fabric contamination The fabric contamination of the UV filter composition was measured by L*a*b as defined above. The measurement was carried out spectrophotometrically using the following instrument: Remission Spectrometer Datacolor SF 400 (light source D65, observer 10°).

[0147] The difference between the color of the stain of the UV filter composition on the white fabric and the color of the white fabric alone was determined according to the assumption that ΔE* = Δb*, and the fabric contamination was determined. The smaller the color difference, the less the fabric contamination.

[0148] Furthermore, the detergency was determined by determining the difference between the color of the stain of the UV filter composition on the white fabric after 1 or 3 washing cycles and the color of the white fabric alone, according to the assumption that ΔE* = Δb*. The smaller the color difference compared to the value obtained before washing, the more the contamination of the fabric is reduced, that is, the better the detergency of the sunscreen composition from the fabric.

[0149] To create a stain on the white fabric by applying the UV filter composition, the UV filter composition was diluted in water or ethanol at a concentration of 10% by weight based on the total weight of the dilution mixture. 300 mg (15 mg / cm 2 ) of the dilution mixture was applied to the white fabric (adjusted to a whiteness of WG170 ± 10 and WG190 ± 10 after washing) to obtain a stain.

[0150] To determine the detergency, 1 or 3 washing cycles were performed in a washing machine at a temperature of 40 °C using Persil Universal Gel obtained from Henkel (3 g for the stain) for 20 minutes. Each fabric was washed separately.

[0151] The results for Comparative Composition 1 and Composition 1 are shown in Table 3 and Figure 1.

[0152] The results for Comparative Compositions 2 and 3 and Compositions 2 and 3 are shown in Table 4.

[0153]

Table 3

[0154]

Table 4

[0155] As can be seen from the above results, Comparative Composition 2 containing only the oil-soluble UVA filter shows strong fabric staining. Composition 2 containing DPDT instead of BMBDM shows a significant reduction in fabric staining. Comparative Composition 3 containing Tinosorb S Lite Aqua as a water-dispersed UV filter instead of DPDT shows that this UVA filter present in the aqueous phase is not suitable for reducing fabric staining. Composition 3 containing all of DHHB, BMBDM, and DPDT shows a reduction in fabric staining.

[0156] In a further step, the following combinations of filters were tested, showing that not all UV filters present in the aqueous phase are suitable for contributing to the reduction of fabric staining. Table 5 shows the test series of various UV filters present in the water and oil phases incorporated into the emulsion and their performance in reducing fabric staining.

[0157]

Table 5

[0158] The test emulsion is prepared as follows: Heat Parts A and B to 80 °C with stirring. Add Part A to B with stirring and homogenize. Add Phase C premixed with an ultra turrax device if present. Cool this to room temperature. Add Phase D if present. Confirm that the pH is above 7.

[0159] The results obtained from the fabric staining test are shown in Table 6.

[0160]

Table 6

[0161] Test emulsion 1 contains an oil-soluble UVA filter that causes fabric staining, which is not evaluated by consumers. In contrast, test emulsion 2 contains only a water-soluble UVA filter and shows no fabric staining but exhibits lower UVA protection than required (the UVA-PF measured value was equal to 3.7 instead of the expected 5.7 (Table 5)). The combination of DHHB and DPDT (oil-soluble and water-soluble), which is the UV filter combination of the present invention, maintains UVA performance and at the same time results in a reduction in fabric staining in test emulsion 3. In test emulsion 4, DPDT is replaced with Tinosorb S Lite Aqua, a water-dispersed UVA filter. There is no positive effect on fabric staining and detergency.

[0162] Recovery rate measurement of the photostability of TDSA Method for manufacturing a sunscreen composition For each test sunscreen composition, the components of part A and the components of part B as shown in Table 7 below were combined, heated to 80 °C respectively, where part A was added to part B with stirring, and further homogenized. If present, phase C was premixed with an ultra turrax device and added to phases A and B. Subsequently, the sunscreen composition was cooled to room temperature with stirring, and the pH of each composition was adjusted to above 7.00.

[0165] Apply the sunscreen composition as defined above to a rough quartz plate (2 μl / cm 2 ). Irradiate the plate for different durations using an Atlas CPS device (MED = minimum erythema dose): - 0 hours (0 MED, no irradiation) - 2 hours (10 MED), - 10 hours (50 MED).

[0166] In total, four plates are prepared for each irradiation condition. After irradiation, each plate is rinsed with tetrahydrofuran. The rinse solution is further analyzed via HPLC to determine the recovery rate of TDSA.
