[0001] The following description relates generally to packaging housings, and more particularly to packaging housings for adhesive ostomy appliances. [Background technology]
[0002] Adhesive devices, such as barrier rings, are packaged and stored in enclosures to maintain the cleanliness and integrity of the device. The barrier rings are made of materials that are inherently adhesive or tacky to some degree. Typical enclosures use molded clamshell or clamshell-like enclosures or packages to secure and maintain the device (barrier ring). The barrier rings have release liners on one or both sides of the barrier ring that provide a protective cover when the barrier ring is stored in the enclosure.
[0003] To use the barrier ring, the housing is opened, the barrier ring is removed from the housing, the release liner is removed, and the barrier ring is stretched or otherwise contoured to the desired shape.

[0006] In one aspect, a packaging housing for an ostomy appliance, such as an adhesive barrier ring, includes a body having a base and an upstanding sidewall integral and continuous with the base. The upstanding sidewall has a peripheral edge opposite the base. The base and sidewall define a storage area for the barrier ring. The base and sidewall are formed from a first material.
[0007] The cover element extends over the storage area on the peripheral edge of the sidewall. The cover element is formed from a second material different from the first material. The second material has a higher affinity for the ostomy appliance, e.g., a barrier ring, than the affinity of the first material for the ostomy appliance. [0018] FIG. 1 illustrates an ostomy appliance such as a barrier ring 10. The barrier ring 10 may be formed from a pressure-sensitive adhesive, such as a flexible hydrocolloid material, which may include a ceramide. The barrier ring 10 may have a first side 12, a second side 14, and an open central region 16. Referring to FIGS. 2-4, the barrier ring 10 may be packaged and stored within a packaging housing 18. In one embodiment, the housing 18 may include a base 20 and upstanding sidewalls 22 having a perimeter 24. The base 20 and sidewalls 22 may define a cup-shaped body 26 having an interior or storage region 28 in which the barrier ring 10 may be placed.
