A file management method according to one embodiment of the present invention includes the steps of: detecting an attempt by a user terminal to access a file stored in a remote location; determining the location where the accessed file is to be opened; in response to the determination that the location where the file is to be opened is a remote location, the file management server opens the file and provides the contents of the opened file to the user terminal; and in response to the determination that the location where the file is to be opened is a local location, the file management server processes the file so that it is downloaded to the user terminal.
