CROSS-REFERENCES TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. Prov. Ser. No. 63 / 580,425 filed on Sep. 4, 2023, which is incorporated in its entirety by reference.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONField of the Invention
[0002] The present invention relates to a mask for a water sports mask, especially a mask used for swimming, snorkeling, free diving, spearfishing or other water activities (including both surface and underwater activities), in which the mask usually at least covers the user's eyes.Descriptions of the Related Art
[0003] Current masks for underwater activities commonly include, for example, swimming goggles that only cover the eyes, diving masks that cover both the eyes and nose, and full-face breathable masks that cover the eyes, nose, and mouth. Among these types, diving masks and full-face breathable masks are designed not to touch the user's face as much as possible (especially where the bridge and root of the user's nose reside) to avoid facial discomfort. They may also need to have a viewing window portion large enough to maintain a sufficient field of vision. They may even be necessary to configure a breathing passage in the mask body, especially in the design of a full-face breathable mask. These requirements are not conducive to the miniaturization design of a mask and also make the heaviest portion of the mask (i.e., the portion where the frame and viewing window are located) distal away from the user's face, resulting in such a portion will structurally produce a downward pulling force, which in turn affects the watertightness of the waterproof skirt. To improve the stability of wearing the mask, most designs choose to increase the thickness of the waterproof skirt to maintain a balanced weight distribution of the mask body.
[0004] However, a waterproof skirt with an increased thickness is not conducive to flexible deformation. It is even more difficult if it needs to adapt to the various face shapes of users due to age, gender, and race to ensure comfortable wearing and excellent watertightness. As a result, after research and development of a particular model of a mask, manufacturers are usually inevitably required to produce multiple sizes of the products for the same model to provide options for customers. This inevitably leads to a significant increase in the manufacturing and sales costs of the masks.
[0005] Furthermore, once a general user wears a mask, the waterproof skirt will stick to the user's face like a suction cup, lacking sufficient cushioning capacity. During underwater activities, any external impact or even slight movements of the user's face can cause the waterproof skirt to slightly detach from the face, resulting in water leaking. This is one of the shortcomings of the current masks.
[0006] In view of this, the industry is striving to design a water sports mask that can solve some or all of the above problems.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] An objective of the present invention is to provide a water sports mask. As long as a mask has a waterproof skirt to be attached to the user's face, an elongated groove with meaningful dimensions (not just being decorative) is provided at the area of the waterproof skirt of the mask not touching the user's face, especially at the outer edge of a rigid frame or of a soft frame integrally formed with the waterproof skirt. By making it easier to bend longitudinally along the grooves, the flexible deformation ability of the waterproof skirt can be improved, i.e., the waterproof skirt can be more easily stretched or bent within a certain range, making it more suitable to fit the contours of different users' faces. At the same time, in certain implementations, the elongated groove can function like a rib, effectively enhancing the strength of the waterproof skirt. This not only reduces the need to thicken the sealing skirt but also increases the overall strength of the mask body when worn. In the event of an accidental external impact or unexpected movement of the user's face, the groove provides additional cushioning to prevent the waterproof skirt from immediately detaching from the face, while still being able to maintain excellent watertightness.
[0008] To achieve the above objective, the present invention discloses a water sports mask, which includes a viewing window portion, a frame portion and a waterproof skirt. The waterproof skirt has a first region and a second region. A portion of the first region and the viewing window portion are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion. When a user wears the water sports mask, a rear edge of the second region is configured to fit a face of the user. At least one groove is formed between the first region and the second region of the waterproof skirt to substantially increase a degree of flexible deformation of the waterproof skirt so that the rear edge is configured to be more suitably fit along a contour of the face of the user. The at least one groove has at least two of a width, a depth and an outer angle, in which the width ranges between 1.5 and 25 millimeters (mm), the depth ranges between 2 and 30 mm, and the outer angle ranges between 5 and 180 degrees.
[0009] In an implementation, the first region of the waterproof skirt has an upper frame section and a lower covering section, and the frame portion is integrally formed by being extended from the upper frame section to allow the viewing window portion to be water-tightly embedded in the frame portion, whereby when the user wears the water sports mask, the viewing window portion is configured to cover eyes of the user, and the lower covering section is configured cover a nose of the user.
[0010] In an example, the waterproof skirt is formed with a plurality of grooves circumferentially positioned on an outer edge of the frame portion.
[0011] In an example, the width, the depth and the outer angle of each of the grooves range between 2 and 10 mm, between 5 and 15 mm, and between 5 and 100 degrees, respectively.
[0012] In another implementation, the first region of the waterproof skirt has an upper frame section and a lower covering section, and the upper frame section and the viewing window portion are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion, whereby when the user wears the water sports mask, the viewing window portion is configured to cover eyes of the user, and the lower covering section is configured to cover a nose of the user.
[0013] In an example, the waterproof skirt is formed with one groove positioned on an upper side thereof.
[0014] In an example, the width, the depth and the outer angle of the groove range between 5 and 20 mm, between 3 and 15 mm, and between 5 and 100 degrees, respectively.
[0015] In yet another implementation, the first region of the waterproof skirt has an upper frame section and a lower covering section, and the upper frame section and the viewing window portion are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion, whereby when the user wears the water sports mask, the viewing window portion is configured to cover eyes of the user, and the lower covering section is configured to cover a nose and a mouth of the user.
[0016] In an example, the waterproof skirt is formed with two grooves positioned on two opposite sides thereof, respectively.
[0017] In an example, the width, the depth and the outer angle of each of the grooves range between 3 and 10 mm, between 5 and 20 mm, and between 15 and 120 degrees, respectively.
[0018] In a further implementation, the first region of the waterproof skirt and the viewing window portion are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion, whereby when the user wears the water sports mask, the viewing window portion is configured to cover eyes, a nose and a mouth of the user.
[0019] In an example, the waterproof skirt is formed with one groove positioned on a lower side thereof.
[0020] In an example, the width, the depth and the outer angle of the groove range between 2 and 10 mm, between 10 and 25 mm, and between 30 and 180 degrees, respectively.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0039] It shall be appreciated that the following description of the embodiments is only to explain the contents of the present invention, but not to limit the invention as claimed. Elements not directly related to the present invention are omitted from the description (e.g., the head strap that fastens the mask to the user's head is omitted from the description in some figures), and the dimensions as depicted for all elements in the drawings are just for easy understanding and do not intend to limit their actual scales. In addition, the “front,”“back,”“left,”“right,”“inner,”“outer,”“front,”“rear,” or the like adjectives used defined in the descriptions are referred to by the direction of the user himself / herself. They are only set forth for spatial relationship and are not limitative.
[0040] The present invention relates to a water sports mask, which can be (but is not limited to) swimming goggles, a swimming mask, a diving mask or any form of breathable mask (for example, a full-face mask). All of these types can adopt the structure of the mask described in this invention. The differences lie in whether the mask body covers the user's eyes only, both eyes and nose, or all of the eyes, nose and mouth, and whether there is a breathing tube communicating with the interior of the body. However, these modifications do not affect the description of the features of the mask body of the present invention. Therefore, parts other than the mask body, such as the breathing tube, the head strap, intake and exhaust passages, and others that are irrelevant to the structure of the mask body will not be specifically described. Further, in order to facilitate the description of the features of the present invention, the head straps are only depicted in FIGS. 2A, 3A, and 4A, and are omitted in the remaining figures.
[0041] The first embodiment of the present invention relates to a water sports mask 1, as shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B. The water sports mask 1 is a mask used for activities such as spearfishing, swimming training or snorkeling. The water sports mask 1 includes a viewing window portion 11, a frame portion 13 and a waterproof skirt 15. The waterproof skirt 15 has a first region (i.e., a front region) 15a and a second region (i.e., a rear region) 15b. A portion of the first region 15a and the viewing window portion 11 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 13.
[0042] In this embodiment, the first region 15a of the waterproof skirt 15 has an upper frame section 15a1 and a lower covering section 15a2. The frame portion 13 is integrally formed by being extended from the upper frame section 15a1 so that the viewing window portion 11 is suitably water-tightly embedded in the upper frame section 15a1. When a user wears the water sports mask 1 through a fastening device (such as an elastic head strap, not shown), the viewing window portion 11 is configured to cover the user's eyes, and the lower covering section 15a2 is configured to cover the user's nose. As shown in FIG. 1A, the viewing window portion 11 and the frame portion 13 include two separate viewing windows 11a and 11b and two separate frames 13a and 13b, respectively.
[0043] In addition, when the user wears the water sports mask 1, a rear edge 15b1 of the second region 15b of the waterproof skirt 15 is configured to fit the user's face. The waterproof skirt 15 is formed with a plurality of grooves 15g between the first region 15a and the second region 15b thereof. These grooves 15g are circumferentially positioned on an outer edge of the frame portion 13 (i.e., corresponding to the periphery of the user's eye sockets and eyebone). In this embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B, the groove 15g is substantially lateral, i.e., extending along the periphery of the frame portion 13. The groove 15g may be designed to have a certain depth to produce the same effect as a rib. When the waterproof skirt 15 is pushed by an external force, it can be abutted against positions around parts of a periphery of the user's eye socket and browbone, allowing the water sports mask 1 to be very stably fitted to the face. However, in other embodiments, the groove may not extend completely along the periphery of the frame portion; that is, it is not limited to the configuration shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B.
[0044] Specifically, reference is further made to FIG. 1C, which shows a partial cross-sectional view of the waterproof skirt 15 near the groove 15g. Each groove 15g has at least two of a width w, a depth d and an outer angle θ, wherein the width w is between 1.5 and 25 millimeters (mm), the depth d is between 2 and 30 mm, and the outer angle θ is between 5 and 180 degrees. Preferably, the width w, the depth d and the outer angle θ of each groove 15g range between 2 and 10 mm, between 5 and 15 mm, and between 5 and 100 degrees. Under these settings of meaningful dimension, the grooves 15g can substantially increase the degree of flexible deformation of the waterproof skirt 15, allowing the rear edge 15b1 to more suitably fit along the contour of the user's face. Furthermore, the grooves 15g not only improve the adaptability of the water sports mask 1 for several different face shapes, but also provide further cushioning when the user is accidentally subjected to internal and / or external forces. FIG. 1D depicts a deformation state of the groove 15g when the user wears the mask 1 and his / her face abuts against the waterproof skirt 15 (as shown by the arrow).
[0045] The second embodiment of the present invention relates to a water sports mask 2, as shown in FIGS. 2A and 2B. The water sports mask 2 is a mask used for activities such as snorkeling or diving. The water sports mask 2 includes a viewing window portion 21, a frame portion 23 and a waterproof skirt 25. The waterproof skirt 25 has a first region 25a and a second region 25b. A portion of the first region 25a and the viewing window portion 21 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 23.
[0046] In this embodiment, the first region 25a of the waterproof skirt 25 has an upper frame section 25a1 and a lower covering section 25a2. The upper frame section 25a1 and the viewing window portion 21 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 23. When a user wears the water sports mask 2 through a fastening device (such as an elastic head strap 201, as shown in FIG. 2A), the viewing window portion 21 is configured to cover the user's eyes, and the lower covering section 25a2 is configured to cover the user's nose. As shown in FIG. 2A, the frame portion 23 is a single component, and the viewing window portion 21 includes two separate viewing windows 21a and 21b. The viewing window portion 21, the frame portion 23 and the waterproof skirt 25 are assembled to form the water sports mask 2.
[0047] In addition, when the user wears the water sports mask 2, a rear edge 25b1 of the second region 25b of the waterproof skirt 25 is configured to fit the user's face. The waterproof skirt 25 is formed with one groove 25g between the first region 25a and the second region 25b thereof. The groove 25g is positioned on an upper side of the waterproof skirt 25 (i.e., near the user's browbone). Similarly, reference further is made to FIG. 2C, which shows a partial cross-sectional view of the waterproof skirt 25 near the groove 25g. The groove 25g has at least two of a width w, a depth d and an outer angle θ, wherein the width w is between 1.5 and 25 mm, the depth d is between 2 and 30 mm, and the outer angle θ is between 5 and 180 degrees. Preferably, the width w, the depth d and the outer angle θ of the groove 25g range between 5 and 20 mm, between 3 and 15 mm, and between 5 and 100 degrees, respectively. When the waterproof skirt 25 is subjected to internal and / or external forces, the groove 25g will be deformed. FIG. 2D depicts a deformation state of the groove 25g when the user wears the mask 2 and his / her face abuts against the waterproof skirt 25 (as shown by the arrow).
[0048] The third embodiment of the present invention relates to a water sports mask 3, as shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B. The water sports mask 3 is a spectacle-type full-face mask used for activities such as snorkeling. The water sports mask 3 includes a viewing window portion 31, a frame portion 33, a waterproof skirt 35 and a breathing tube 37. The waterproof skirt 35 has a first region 35a and a second region 35b. A portion of the first region 35a and the viewing window portion 31 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 33.
[0049] In this embodiment, the first region 35a of the waterproof skirt 35 has an upper frame section 35a1 and a lower covering section 35a2. The upper frame section 35a1 and the viewing window portion 31 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 33. When a user wears the water sports mask 3 through a fastening device (such as an elastic head strap 301, as shown in FIG. 3A), the viewing window portion 31 is configured to cover the user's eyes, and the lower covering section 35a2 is configured to cover the user's nose and mouth. As shown in FIG. 3A, the viewing window portion 31 and the frame portion 33 are both a single component. The viewing window portion 31, the frame portion 33, the waterproof skirt 35 and the breathing tube 37 are assembled to form the water sports mask 3.
[0050] In addition, when the user wears the water sports mask 3, a rear edge 35b1 of the second region 35b of the waterproof skirt 35 is configured to fit the user's face. The waterproof skirt 35 is formed with two grooves 35g between the first region 35a and the second region 35b thereof. The two grooves 35g are positioned on two opposite sides of the waterproof skirt 35, respectively (i.e., near the outer sides of the user's eyes). Optionally, the waterproof skirt 35 may further have a groove 35g at a bottom of the waterproof skirt 35 to increase the flexibility of the water sports mask 3 to fit the user's chin.
[0051] Similarly, reference is further made to FIG. 3C, which shows a partial cross-sectional view of the waterproof skirt 35 near the groove 35g. The groove 35g has at least two of a width w, a depth d and an outer angle θ, wherein the width w is between 1.5 and 25 mm, the depth d is between 2 and 30 mm, and the outer angle θ is between 5 and 180 degrees. Preferably, the width w, the depth d and the outer angle θ of each groove 35g range between 3 and 10 mm, between 5 and 20 mm, and between 15 and 120 degrees. When the waterproof skirt 35 is subjected to internal and / or external forces, the groove 35g will be deformed. FIG. 3D depicts a deformation state of the groove 35g when the user wears the mask 3 and his / her face abuts against the waterproof skirt 35 (as shown by the arrow).
[0052] The fourth embodiment of the present invention relates to a water sports mask 4, as shown in FIGS. 4A and 4B. The water sports mask 4 is a full-viewing window full-face mask used for activities such as snorkeling. The water sports mask 4 includes a viewing window portion 41, a frame portion 43, a waterproof skirt 45 and a breathing tube 47. The waterproof skirt 45 has a first region 45a and a second region 45b. A portion of the first region 45a and the viewing window portion 41 are water-tightly embedded in the frame portion 43.
[0053] In this embodiment, when r wears the water sports mask 4 through a fastening device (such as an elastic head strap 401, as shown in FIG. 4A), the viewing window portion 41 is configured to cover the user's eyes, nose and mouth. As shown in FIG. 4A, the viewing window portion 41 and the frame portion 43 are both a single component. The viewing window portion 41, the frame portion 43, the waterproof skirt 45 and the breathing tube 47 are assembled to form the water sports mask 4.
[0054] In addition, when the user wears the water sports mask 4, a rear edge 45b1 of the second region 45b of the waterproof skirt 45 is configured to fit the user's face. The waterproof skirt 45 is formed with one groove 45g between the first region 45a and the second region 45b thereof. The groove 45g is positioned on a lower side of the waterproof skirt 45 (i.e., near the user's chin).
[0055] Similarly, reference is further made to FIG. 4C, which shows a partial cross-sectional view of the waterproof skirt 45 near the groove 45g. The groove 45g has at least two of a width w, a depth d and an outer angle θ, wherein the width w is between 1.5 and 25 mm, the depth d is between 2 and 30 mm, and the outer angle θ is between 5 and 180 degrees. Preferably, the width w, the depth d and the outer angle θ of the groove 45g range between 2 and 10 mm, between 10 and 25 mm, and between 30 and 180 degrees, respectively. When the waterproof skirt 45 is subjected to internal and / or external forces, the groove 45g will be deformed. FIG. 4D depicts a deformation state of the groove 45g when the user wears the mask 4 and his / her face abuts against the waterproof skirt 45 (as shown by the arrow).
[0056] Overall, as illustrated in the above figures, the water sports mask of the present invention includes a viewing window portion, a frame portion, and a waterproof skirt. The waterproof skirt has a front region (i.e., a first region) and a rear region (i.e., a second region). The viewing window portion and the frame portion as described and set forth herein refer to a generic concept. In an embodiment, they may refer to two viewing windows and two frames to cover the left and right eyes, respectively, as shown in FIG. 1A of the first embodiment. In another embodiment, they may refer to two viewing windows assembled with a frame, as shown in FIG. 2A of the second embodiment. Further, in yet another embodiment, they may refer to a viewing window assembled with a frame to simultaneously cover the left and right eyes, as shown in FIG. 3A of the third embodiment. In yet further embodiment, they may refer to a full-viewing window mask that simultaneously covers the eyes, nose and mouth, as shown in FIGS. 4A and 4B of the fourth embodiment. As shown in the above first to fourth embodiments, each of the grooves 15g, 25g, 35g, and 45g is recessed inwardly toward the user; however, in other embodiments, the grooves can be recessed outwardly away from the user to present a protruding appearance.
[0057] Further referring to FIG. 5, the shape of the groove in the present invention may be varied. For example, as shown by the cross-sectional views (a) to (f), the grooves may be a cornered U-shape or V-shape, a rounded U-shape, or other possible variations. The width w is the width of the maximum opening of the groove, and the depth d is measured from the center of the bottom of the groove to the hypothetic surface across the groove opening. The outer angle θ is the angle between the outer sidewall of the groove and the face-contacting section of the waterproof skirt (i.e., the second region defined above).
[0058] Each of the above embodiments provides elongated groove(s) on the portion(s) of the waterproof skirt of the mask body that do not contact the user's face, allowing the waterproof skirt to bend and deform more easily. This design is intended to enhance the degree of flexible deformation of the waterproof skirt of the mask of the present invention to be better than that of conventional masks with the same design similar parameters of the frame portion and viewing window portion. As a result, the mask of the present invention can accommodate a wider range of face shapes without the need to manufacture and sell multiple sizes for different users. Additionally, the mask of the present invention provides better cushioning and support during use. Therefore, the grooves are preferably oriented with its longitudinal length extending along the periphery of the mask body. The shape and number of the grooves, and how they are arranged are not the focus of concern.
[0059] In addition, the above embodiments are only illustrative. In the case where FIG. 5 has shown various possible groove shapes and the measures of the width w, depth d and outer angle θ thereof, those having ordinary skill in the art can understand the various possible modifications of the groove shape of the present invention, and any modifications fall within the scope that the present invention intends to protect. For example, unlike the water sports mask 2 shown in FIG. 2B which shows a U-shaped groove, FIGS. 6A and 6B show the water sports masks 6a and 6b having two types of V-shaped grooves 65g, respectively. In FIG. 6A, the outer angle θ of the groove 65g of the water sports mask 6a approximately approaches to 180 degrees to show a substantially planar state, and is therefore not shown. In contrast, in FIG. 6B, the outer angle θ of the groove 65g of the water sports mask 6b is approximately approaches 90 degrees. In both FIGS. 6A and 6B, the waterproof skirts 25 have similar S-shaped cross sections.
[0060] In summary, the water sports mask of the present invention enhances the flexible deformability of the waterproof skirt by providing deformable groove(s) on the portion(s) of the waterproof skirt that do not contact the user's face. The present invention allows the mask to better accommodate the various face shapes of users of different ages, genders, and ethnicities, thereby ensuring comfortable wear and superior watertightness performance.
[0061] The foregoing embodiments are used only to illustrate the implementations of the present invention and to explain the technical features of the present invention, and are not used to limit the scope of the present invention. Any modifications or equivalent arrangements that can be easily accomplished by those skilled in the art are considered to fall within the scope of the present invention, and the scope of the present invention should be limited by the claims of the patent application.
