[0012] The useful life of hair extensions varies based upon a multiplicity of factors, including the type of hair extension, the manner of installation, and the characteristics of the wearer's natural, or native, hair. The lifestyle of the wearer also impacts the lifecycle of a hair extension. More numerous washings, the properties of the water, frequent or aggressive brushing of hair, and the application of heat and chemicals may accelerate the obsolescence of a hair extension. Furthermore, the wearer's daily routines also affect the life span of hair extensions if, for example, the wearer braids their hair prior to sleep, uses a satin or silk pillowcase, actively swims, or uses hair ties. On average, hair extensions can last from about eight to twelve months and, sometimes, may have an even shorter lifespan.

[0013] There are many different types of hair extensions, and the means by which these are integrated into a wearer's native hair will vary. Most all varieties of hair extensions and concomitant methods of integration require the services of a professional stylist, whose services are costly and time-consuming. Professional stylists must be experienced in the integration of hair extensions, and many stylists undergo additional training and even achieve certification on an artisan level, enabling them to integrate hair extensions skillfully and competently at a level of expertise unavailable to the general populace.

[0014] Ultimately, proper installation is critical to the life of a hair extension. For example, if a seam or thread securing the extension inadvertently is cut during installation, the seam slowly starts unraveling causing the hair extension to shed and shortening its useful life. It is imperative that the extension be properly installed since defective integration shortens the useful duration of the life of the extension.

[0015] The present invention overcomes the difficulties and expense associated with installing hair extensions. The present invention provides a closure for hair extensions that is efficient to install, is cost-effective since it may be installed by anyone even those without professional experience or education in the art, and is versatile since it permits the user to wear any type of hair extension, all while protecting the seam of the hair weft when exposed to water, chemicals or extraneous substances. This will extend the longevity of the gorgeous hair incorporated into the extension. The hair extension closure of the present invention may be used in conjunction with any type of hair extension.

[0016] Pinchbraid extensions are individual locks or wefts of hair that are tied into the wearer's natural hair with a thread. The extension hair is attached as strands in a braid. With this method of installation, which is time-consuming and costly, the thread used to secure the weft into the wearer's native hair is composed of cotton, polyester or nylon. These materials are not chemical, nor are they water- or heat-resistant, and they will break down over time. These materials also are heavy on fine hair, and the seam does not blend with the scalp.

[0017] For a very natural look, fusion integration may involve the application of hot glue to attach the extensions to individual strands of the wearer's natural hair, in very small sections. The process of installing fusion extensions is very time-consuming and requires re-positioning of the extensions every few months as the wearer's natural hair grows. To reduce the installation time, fusion attachments may comprise an adhesive tip, to which a heat clamp is applied to melt the adhesive to attach the extension to the natural hair. Fusion weaving of hair extensions permits routine shampooing and the use of hair products. Due to various chemicals in the adhesives, which may cause hair loss and scalp irritation, particularly when combined with heat, fusion is damaging to natural hair.

[0018] Tape-in hair extensions are attached to a layer of tape, which is adhered with liquid adhesive or glue tape to the wearer's hair or scalp. These extensions must be washed with non-sulfate shampoos and other specialized products. The tape used in this installation process is similar to rubber cement, which is damaging to natural hair. The removal process of tape-in extensions also uses an alcohol solvent, which is toxic to the skin with fumes toxic to the lungs. The extensions are removed by applying glue remover. These types of hair extensions present risks of alopecia and damage to the hair root and also cause pain or discomfort. Tape-in hair extensions prohibit the application of heat. As a further disadvantage, tape-in extensions cannot receive color and must be completely removed before the wearer's natural hair may be color treated. In addition to the potential health risks associated with tape-in extensions, their installation and maintenance are time-consuming and inefficient, which increases the costs associated with these types of extensions.

[0019] Bonding involves the application of specialized adhesives, which bond the extension weft to the wearer's natural hair and which typically are intended for shorter duration. Extensions applied with bonding glue should be worn for several weeks. A soft bond adhesive is flexible and comfortable to wear and is made using latex or acrylic based adhesives. Hard bond adhesives contain cyanoacrylate and last longer because they are not water-based and are less susceptible to deterioration. Hard bond adhesives, once applied, are unyielding and uncomfortable. Additionally, routine cleansing of the hair can deteriorate both the soft and hard bond adhesives and shorten the life of the extensions. Bonding also prohibits the application of heat to the extension.

[0020] Microbead hair extensions comprise strands of hair which are enclosed by small metal tubes, typically made of aluminum or copper. Microbeads are small metal rings, tubes or beads attached to small sections of natural hair, which are tightened using a plier that clamps the bead around the natural hair. Various types of hair extensions may be used with microbeads. I-tip extensions, also known as stick tip extensions or microbead extensions, are strands of human hair extensions topped with a keratin tip shaped like the letter “I”. Instead of using heat or glue which is harmful to natural hair, these extensions are attached via a micro bead, which may be lined with silicon. Keratin tip hair extensions, also called K-tip extensions, are partially made from a keratin protein naturally occurring in human hair. A silicone additive in the K-tip extension adds an extra layer of protection for the wearer's natural hair.

[0021] I-tip and K-tip extensions require a labor-intensive integration process involving specialized tools and professional installation. Due to the small size of the microbead, the stylist can work only with small amounts of hair at a time and the process is labor-intensive and expensive. The process requires a plurality of microbeads to secure the extension to the native hair, plus specialized tools, including loop tool for threading the native hair through the microbead, and pliers for clamping the hair extension inside the microbead, thus connecting the microbead to wearer's native hair. In addition, combing and sectioning clips are needed to separate hair into sections and maintain organization during application. A heat protectant may be necessary when styling extensions using heat. I-tips and K-tips are applied by pulling a small strand of the wearer's native hair through the microbead, which is positioned close to the root of the hair, adding the extension weft, and then compressing the microbead closed with a plier to compress the link and secure it to the wearer's own hair. An I-tip or K-tip extension is then placed inside the microbead, which is clamped closed with the pliers. Since the I-tip or K-tip is positioned close to the root, it moves seamlessly with the natural hair.

[0022] Microbead extensions require frequent maintenance and may cause pain or damage. Microbeads can slide off of oily, fine or thin hair. As the hair grows, the microbeads move away from the scalp, requiring repositioning every few weeks. Furthermore, over time, the tip or seam of the hair extension may corrode and deteriorate when exposed to heat, water and chemicals. Micro links, when attached improperly, may damage the natural hair. The weight of the links may be uncomfortable, and the hard metal loops may cause pain or discomfort due to pressure on the scalp when the wearer is in a supine position or when resting the head against a surface. Micro links also may prevent or disrupt sleep. Moreover, when installed close to the scalp, metal micro links may produce pruritis or pain, particularly during the first few weeks of use. Finally, these metal rings may be difficult to remove by the wearer, and it is advisable to have a professional uninstall the micro links to minimize the risk of damage to the wearer's natural hair.

[0023] Clip-in extensions comprise a weft of extension hair equipped with one or more clips for connecting the weft of hair to the wearer's native hair. Clips-in extensions eliminate the need for adhesive tapes, micro beads, heating tools, braids and other installation techniques. The clips typically are made of metal and are supplied with a clamp and teeth for engaging the wearer's hair. Not only is the metal clamp damaging to the natural hair follicle, they are too heavy on fine hair and will slip. Clips-ins also may cause alopecia.

[0024] Clip-in hair extensions typically do not cause damage or pain and may be integrated into natural hair to add length and volume on a temporary basis. Clip-in hair extensions generally are constructed as a single, long contoured extension that may be cut into multiple layers for creating separate layers when installed. Starting at the nape of the neck, the hair is sectioned and the extension, or weft, is placed onto this section with the clips open and facing the scalp. Each clip is snapped into place. Clipped-in extensions are not attached to the natural hair follicle and look less natural, although this technique also lacks the disadvantages of damage to the hair root and traction alopecia associated with glue extensions.

[0025] As seen from the foregoing, conventional hair extensions and methods of installation are damaging to the wearer's natural hair follicle and are inefficient. Not only are these extensions and methods of integration damaging, they are also expensive, requiring frequent maintenance and the services of a professional stylist, often one who has achieved special certification. Commonly, conventional methods of installation of hair extensions cause carpal tunnel syndrome in stylists' wrists or create tears in the rotator cuff of the shoulder from repetitive overuse and wear and tear of the shoulder complex.

[0026] Many people cannot afford the initial cost and ongoing expense every six to eight weeks to maintain professionally installed hair extensions. Yet, hair extensions are advantageous for achieving a desired appearance and for healthy bodily functioning and self-image. Individual identity and personality are reflected in one's hair. Cancer patients, and those persons suffering from alopecia or other illnesses impacting the integumentary system, benefit from hair extensions, which function to help regulate body temperature and protect against disease. Hair extensions, thus, serve useful and necessary purposes, not only for achieving beauty aspirations, but for overall health, maintenance and well-being. It is important, therefore, to provide an affordable hair extension solution and a method for using or integrating hair extensions, which is accessible even for do-it-yourselfers.

[0027] The present invention provides a closure device for hair extensions that is adaptable for use with virtually any hair extension of any kind, including, without limitation, wefts, tape-ins, I-tips, K-tips, Y-tips, adhesive strips, lace, and any type of hair extension that attaches to the natural hair follicle. The hair extension closure of the present invention eliminates the need for harmful materials and objects that are currently being used to install conventional hair extensions, such as needles, threads, beads, heat, tape and adhesives.

[0028] The hair extension closure of the present invention protects the extensions secured within the closure from becoming prematurely detached due to routine exposure to excessive heat, chlorine, saltwater and other extraneous matter. The hair extension closure lies flat on the scalp, is seamless and is untraceable to touch or sight in windy conditions. The hair extension closure of the present invention also is versatile by allowing the user to select any hair extension weft of their choice. The hair extension closure of the present invention is cost-effective and extends the natural life of the extension by protecting the seam of the weft from exposure to water, chemicals and extraneous matter. This extends the longevity of the hair secured in the weft of extension hair.

[0029] The hair extension closure of the present invention is time-efficient and cost-effective and does not require the services of a professional stylist for installation, although professional stylists very well may use the present invention in their salons due to the distinct advantages of the invention. The hair extension of the present invention may be installed by a professional stylist and will reduce installation time, thus reducing risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and other injuries due to wear and tear and overuse of arms and wrists. The hair extension closure of the present invention also can be installed by the wearer, friends, and family. Thus, the hair extension closure of the present invention permits do-it-yourself installations and is user-friendly in this world where another lockdown could take place, when the services of a professional stylist would be prohibited, or when the services of a professional stylist are cost prohibitive. The hair extension closure and method of the present invention may be installed speedily in much less time than required for installing conventional hair extensions.

[0030] The hair extension closure of the present invention may comprise one or more components and may have a semi-permanent or permanent closing mechanism, such as a hook and loop closure and / or a hinge or clamp to close the device down during installation in a wearer's hair. The hair extension closure of the present invention may provide ventilation to allow the scalp to breathe, alleviating itching, which in and of itself tends to loosen extensions. The hair extension closure of the present invention provides a structural foundation for any type of hair extension placed inside the closure and offers additional security and protection from extraneous matter that corrodes over time in the human hair follicle, whether it is the wearer's natural hair or the hair of the extension itself. The hair extension closure of the present invention will act as a seam protector on every hair extension weft, whether it is hand-tied, slim weft, hybrid, machine, invisible bead, hidden bead or anything similar thereto. This device will remain secure during the maintenance time frame, with no premature slipping, for weeks on end on any given hair follicle, such as straight, curly, thin, thick, coarse and so on.

[0031] The hair extension closure of the present invention may comprise solely a closure for supporting hair extension or it may further comprise one or more hair extensions attached to it. Further, the hair extension device of the present invention may be used as two components to serve as a closure for other types of hair extensions. The closure of the present invention may be used in connection with the other types of hair extensions. For example, if a wearer has clip-in extensions, the metal clip can be removed and the hair extension weft may be placed in the hair extension closure of the present invention and will stay secure therein until removed.

[0032] Turning now to the drawings in general, and to FIGS. 1, 2 and 2A in particular, there is shown therein an illustrative hair extension closure 10 constructed in accordance with the present invention. As used herein, “hair extension” or “extension” means a weft of hair designed to be integrated into a wearer's natural hair. The hair extension closure 10 comprises a first component 12 and a second component 14 which may be conformable to the shape of the human head. The first component 12 and the second component 14 may be structurally separate components that are joined together in a manner yet to be described. Alternatively, the first component 12 and the second component 14 may hinged at one end with a temporary removal mechanism, such as a hook and loop closure, or a permanent closing mechanism, such as a hinge or clamp which close the hair extension closure 10 during installation in a wearer's hair. Alternatively, the first component 12 and the second component 14 may be fused together or may be integrally formed together at one end and open at an opposite end, allowing the hair extension closure 10 to be opened and closed but conjoining the first and second components.

[0033] The first component 12 and the second component 14 create a structural foundation for any type of hair extension placed inside the hair extension closure 10 and provide protection from extraneous matter or sebum from the human hair follicle. The hair extension closure 10 protects the seam of the weft of hair enclosed in the hair extension closure 10, whether the weft is hand-tied, slim weft, hybrid, machine, invisible bead, hidden bead or anything similar thereto. This device will remain secure during the maintenance time frame, with no premature slipping, for weeks on end on any given hair follicle, such as straight, curly, thin, thick, coarse and so on.

[0034] The first component 12 and second component 14 may be made of a flexible material so that the hair extension closure is conformable or moldable to the shape of the wearer's head, for example, in an arcuate shape or horseshoe form. Some materials suitable for use in constructing the first component 12 and the second component 14 include bamboo, laminated bamboo, stainless steel, fiberglass, short bamboo fiber, thermosetting polymers, matte polyurethane panels, flat latex and soft metals, including gold, silver, tin, zinc, aluminum, thorium, copper, brass and bronze or combinations of the foregoing. The hair extension closure 10 lies flat against the scalp of the wearer and is not bulky.

[0035] The first component 12 and the second component 14 may be coated or treated with a material that is soft and malleable and will protect the wearer's hair. Some materials suitable for use as a lining or coating of the first component 12 and the second component 14 include siloxane waterproofing or clear polyurethane, latex, rubber, neoprene, silicone rubber, silicone elastomers, silicone latex, siloxane waterproofing, clear silicone waterproof sealant, polyurethane, protein hydrolysates, silicone, including dimethicones, aminosilicones, siloxysilicates, and anionic silicones, thermoplastic elastomers, cyclomethicone or other waterproof or water-resistant sealant or coating or combinations of the foregoing. Silicones suitable for use in the present invention include dimethicone, aminosilicones, siloxysilicates and anionic silicones. These compounds differ in their rates of deposition and solubility in a water medium and act differently on or in the hair. Polysiloxane polymers prevent damage from heat. Amino silicones are cationic substances but are not necessarily more substantive to the hair than dimethicone. Dimethicone protects the hair shaft from abrasive actions while siloxysilicates increase hair body. Dimethicones are hydrophobic and have enhanced adsorption properties on virgin hair and roots. Protein hydrolysates, in particular those with low molecular weight distribution, have been known to protect hair against chemical and environmental damage. Many types of protein hydrolysates, such as keratin hydrolysates, neutralize electrical charges and diminish frizz and friction. Keratin is a useful protein due to its mechanical and protective properties.

[0036] The hair extension closure 10 is adapted to conform to the shape of the human head. To that end, the shape of the first component 12 and second component 14 may comprise any shape for receiving a weft of hair extension and that will lie flat against a human scalp, abutting against the natural hair follicles of the human head. Such shapes may include rectangular, square, ovate, oblong, square, circular, trapezoidal or polygonal. The first component 12 and second component 14 may differ in shape and size from one another, depending upon the application. In one embodiment of the invention, the respective size and shape of the first component 12 and the second component 14 are the same. In one embodiment of the invention, the shape of the first component 12 and of the second component 14 is rectangular. It will be appreciated, however, that first component 12 and second component 14 will conform to the shape of the head, regardless of their selected geometry.

[0037] The hair extension closure 10 will form appropriate dimensions to secure hair extension wefts therein. When the shape of the first component 12 and of the second component 14 is rectangular, the first and second components each will have a length, a width, and a depth or thickness. In one embodiment of the invention the first component 12 and second component 14 may each have a length ranging range from about one inches (2.54 cm) to about 12 inches (30.48 cm), a width ranging from about one inch (2.54 cm) to about 2 inches (5.08 cm), and a depth or thickness ranging from about 0.003 inches (0.00762 cm) to about 0.008 inches (0.02032 cm). It will be appreciated that the shape of the first component 12 and the second component 14, and thus the hair extension closure 10, are adaptable to the application and may comprise shorter lengths for applications of smaller or fewer hair extensions, such as I-tip extensions, or longer lengths for longer or multiple lengths of taped extensions. During installation of the hair extension closure 10, different sizes may be utilized on various portions or sections of the wearer's head in a manner yet to be described.

[0038] Turning now to FIGS. 3, 4 and 4A but with continuing reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the first component 12 of the hair extension closure 10 comprises a first side and a second side (not shown), and the second component 14 of the hair extension closure comprises a first side 24 and a second side 26. The first component 12 forms a spine 28 generally co-extensive with the length of the first component, and the second component 14 forms a spine 30 generally co-extensive with the length of the second component. The first component 12 comprises a first plurality of projections, ridges, scales or teeth 38 extending transversely from the spine 28 of the first component, while the second component 14 comprises a second plurality of projections, ridges, scales or teeth 40 extending transversely from the spine 30 of the second component. The projections 38 and 40 may comprise a depth or thickness that is substantially similar to the depth or thickness of the first component 12 and the second component 14 for a purpose yet to be described. The projections 38 and 40 are adapted to hold or secure one or more wefts of hair extensions inside the hair extension closure 10 in a manner yet to be described.

[0039] The projections 38 of the first component 12 are adapted to engage the projections 40 of the second component 14. In one embodiment of the invention, the projections of the first component interlock with the projections 40 of the second component and vice versa. To that end, the projections 38 of the first component form interstitial spaces or voids 44 therebetween, while the projections of the second component form interstitial spaces or voids 46 therebetween. The projections 38 of the first component 12 and the projections 40 of the second component 14 may be any geometry that enables the projections 38 to interlock seamlessly with the projections 40, and vice versa, without overlapping, such as interlocking spikes, squares, waves, or L-shaped projections. The interstitial spaces 44 of the first component 12 form voids adapted to receive the projections 40 of the second component 14, while the interstitial spaces 46 of the second component are adapted to receive the projections 38 of the first component. The projections 38 and 40 may interlock seamlessly without spaces therebetween, providing an interlocking, airtight fit leaving no gaps. For example, the projections 38 and 40 may form spiked teeth or ridges or scales that interlock in a tight fit, securing a weft of extension hair securely in the hair extension closure 10. It will be appreciated, however, that the projections 38 and 40 may interlock in a manner so as to leave vents or gaps 50 therebetween, even after interlocking, to permit air to flow through the hair extension closure 10 to aerate the scalp and mitigate itching. In one embodiment of the hair extension closure 10, the projections 38 and 40 are L-shaped, which permits the projections to interlock and secure a weft of extension hair while also forming vents 50 permitting air to flow therethrough.

[0040] The dimensions of the projection 38 and 40 will have a thickness or depth which ranges from about 0.0011811 inches (0.03 mm) to about 0.393701 inches (10 mm). The projections 38 and 40 are generally uniform in size to enable the hair extension closure 10 to remain concealed when in use.

[0041] As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3, the first component 12 and the second component 14 are combined by orienting the first component 12 with its first side 20 facing upward, and the second component 14 is oriented with the second side 26 facing upward so that the spines 28 and 30 oppose each other with the projections 38 and 40 juxtaposed therebetween. The projections 38 and 40 may be uniform, offset or randomly positioned in any manner that permits the projections to interlock. In one embodiment of the invention, the projections 38 and 40 are offset so that the projections 38 of the first component 12 are received in the interstitial spaces 46 of the second component 14, while the projections 40 of the second component are received inside the interstitial spaces 44 of the first component 12. In one embodiment of the invention, the first plurality of projections 38 and the second plurality of projections 40 are L-shaped, the legs of the L-shaped projections 38 of the first component 12 face an opposite direction of the legs of the L-shaped projections 40 of the second component 14. In another embodiment of the invention, shown in FIGS. 4 and 4A, the first plurality of projections 38 and the second plurality of projections 40 are L-shaped, the legs of the L-shaped projections 38 of the first component 12 face the same direction as the legs of the L-shaped projections 40 of the second component 14.

[0042] It now will be appreciated that the first plurality of projections 38 of the first component 12 and the second plurality of projections 40 of the second component comprise a depth or thickness that is substantially similar to the depth or thickness of the first component 12 and the second component 14 to enable the hair extension closure 10 to discreetly lie flat against the wearer's scalp while still functioning to engage, hook catch and / or hold the weft of extension hair and the wearer's national hair securely without causing damage.

[0043] The projections 38 and 40 may be formed integrally with the first component 12 and the second component 14, respectively, as one-piece units, in which case the projections 38 and 40 may be constructed of the same material used to construct the first component and the second component, respectively. If the hair extension closure 10 is coated or lined, the projections 38 and 40 may also be coated or lined with the same or a different material. Alternatively, the projections 38 and 40 may be separately formed and constructed of a different material and attached to the first component 12 and second component 14, respectively. For example, the projections 38 and 40 may be made of the same material used to coat or line the first component 12 and the second component 14 and formed at the time of coating or lining the same or attached separately as inserts to the first component and second component, respectively. Some materials suitable for use in coating or lining the first component 12 and the second component 14 and / or for coating and / or forming the projections 38 and 40 include siloxane waterproofing or clear polyurethane, latex, rubber, neoprene, silicone rubber, silicone elastomers, silicone latex, siloxane waterproofing, clear silicone waterproof sealant, polyurethane, protein hydrolysates, silicone, including dimethicones, aminosilicones, siloxysilicates, and anionic silicones, thermoplastic elastomers, cyclomethicone or other waterproof or water-resistant sealant or coating or combinations of the foregoing.

[0044] Additionally, the projections 38 and 40 may further comprise an additional liner, layer or coating, which acts as an extra barrier between the projections and the wearer's native hair and prevents damage. In one embodiment of the invention, the projections 38 and 40 are coated with neoprene, such as Yamamoto® neoprene 39, or silicone.

[0045] Returning now to FIG. 1, the hair extension closure 10 lies flat against the scalp of the wearer, abutting the natural hair follicles, and is concealed in the wearer's native hair. However, in order to further conceal the hair extension closure 10, hair-like strokes 52 can be formed in the first side 20 of the first component 12 and the second side 26 of the second component 14 in order to further camouflage the hair extension closure in the wearer's hair. Hair-like strokes 52 may be parallel and uniform or may appear asymmetrical or unparallel in order to simulate the appearance of human hair, which is naturally free-flowing.

[0046] The hair extension closure 10 will mimic the human scalp and come in a variety of colors to match skin tones. The hair extension closure 10 and / or its first and second components 12 and 14 may be colorized to match different hair tones, such as clear, transparent, black, blonde, dark blonde, light brown, dark brown, brunette or red, or even bright colors such as purple or orange for those who enjoy wearing unconventional hair color treatments. Colorization camouflages traces of the extensions secured in the hair extension closure 10 which may appear in windy conditions or when wearing up-dos.

[0047] The hair extension closure 10 can be placed underneath natural hair, against the scalp and juxtaposed against the natural hair follicle. Alternatively, the hair extension closure can be worn on top of the wearer's hair, which is particularly useful for wearers who suffer alopecia. In this way, the hair extension closure 10 may replace a hair topper.

[0048] Turning now to FIG. 5, the method and operation of the present invention now will be explained. The foregoing discussion of the invention is incorporated herein. The method of the invention can be carried out with any kind of hair extension and replaces the techniques currently being used to attach hair extensions to the natural hair follicle. The wearer's natural hair 60 is parted 62 into sections 64 for installation of one or more hair extension closures 10. Installation may begin, for example by creating a part 62 in the natural hair 60 in the desired location on the scalp and applying the desired number of hair extension closures 10 in the section 64. Natural hair 60 should be parted from the left to the right side of ears above or at the occipital bone, although this may vary with the shape of the wearer's head and lifestyle. Using a weaving comb, a part 62 is formed in the wearer's natural hair 60 in an arcuate shape such from the left to right or vice versa. The second component 14 of the hair extension closure 10 is placed along the part 62, proximal the scalp and natural hair follicles, with the projections 40 facing upward.

[0049] One or more wefts of extension hair 66 are placed on top of the second component 14 along with the wearer's native hair 60 along the part 62. The number and types of hair extensions 66 installed in the hair extension closure 10 can vary depending upon the dimensions of the hair extension closure and the application. Generally, one to eight wefts of hair extensions 66 may be secured within the hair extension closure 10.

[0050] The projections 40 of the second component 14 will engage, hook, hold and / or catch the hair comprising the weft of extension hair 66 and hold it in place in the second component. Additionally, the hair extension may be secured to the second component 14 with clips, such as duck bill clips or alligator clips. Using the wearer's native hair, one or more wefts of extension hair may be tucked into the clips to suspend the second component 14 and hold the weft of extension hair in place while installing the first component 12 on top of the weft of extension hair using clips to prevent movement. The first component 12 is placed over the second component 14, generally parallel therewith so as to cover the second component 14. The first component 12 and the second component 14 are then secured together by engaging and / or interlocking the projections 38 of the first component and the projections 40 of the second component 14, which engages the hair extension in place against the natural hair follicles of the wearer and prevents slippage. The first component 12 and second component 14 are clamped or secured together using pliers or clamping devices in the art and any clips removed. Any clamps and hinges forming the wefts of extension hair should then be closed to secure the wefts of hair extensions to the wearer's head. The assembled hair extension closure 10 provides protection and longevity of the wefts of extension hair and the user's natural hair and secures the weft of extension hair therein. The first component 12 and the second component 14 will also protect any seams of the weft of hair extensions secured therein, when exposed to extraneous substances, such as color, bleach, water, chlorine, salt water and the like.

[0051] The installation proceeds progressively to the next section of hair until all desired areas or the entire scalp is covered. A plurality of hair extension closures 10 may be used in any particular application. The number and spacing of hair extension closures 10 used during an installation are at least in part a function of the dimensions of the hair extension closure 10. As previously described, the dimensions of the hair extension closure 10 may vary, based upon the particular application for the hair extension closure and the location on the scalp where the hair extension is to be installed. The wearer or stylist, when installing one or more hair extension closures 10, should determine the appropriate number and sizes of hair extension closures to be used for the application, including the sizes best suited for the wearer's hair length and texture and their health and cosmetic goals.

[0052] While the arcuate shape of installation of the hair extension closures 10 is desirable, the hair extension closures 10 of the present invention may be installed in any desired pattern, for example bricklayer patterns, checkerboard patterns, horizontal rows placed consecutively with or without spacing, depending upon desired fullness, or no pattern at all where a tousled look is desired. The installation proceeds in progressive sections, wherein the desired number of extensions are added in the desired pattern.

[0053] The number of hair extension closures 10 per section 64 is based upon the requirements of the wearer and the location of the target areas for adding length and thickness. Various sizes of hair extension closures with varying sizes and types of extension hair may be utilized at the same time. The hair extension closure 10 conveniently is adaptable to larger extensions, which typically are appropriate for the back of the head, to be utilized on the top and sides of the head, while remaining discrete and natural-looking. This is particularly advantageous for styles requiring volume and density at the top and sides of the head.

[0054] The hair extension closure 10 lies flat and seamless, which gives the appearance that the extension is growing directly from the roots of the wearer's head, while remaining concealed. The wearer's native hair and extension hair may be brushed, shampooed, conditioned and blow dried and hair products may be applied.

[0055] It now will be appreciated that the hair extension closure 10 of the present invention is time-efficient and cost-effective and does not require the services of a professional stylist for installation, although professional stylists very well may use the present invention in their salons due to the distinct advantages of the invention. The hair extension closure 10 provides a structural foundation for any type of hair extension placed inside the closure, protects the seam of the hair extension and offers security and protection from extraneous substances. This hair extension closure 10 will remain secure during the maintenance time frame, with no premature slipping. The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of conventional hair extensions and provides a hair extension closure 10 that does not employ the conventional attachment methods such as heat, beads, tape thread, needles and adhesives to the scalp or to the wearer's natural hair. The present invention eliminates installation errors and preserves the life of the hair extension. The present invention does not require the application of glue and adhesives directly to the wearer's hair or scalp, thus eliminating the risk of alopecia and hair damage. The wearer may wash, condition, style and maintain their hair routinely and apply styling products. The present invention creates volume and density while discreetly camouflaging wefts of extension hair.
