Abstract

A playing board and a method of play for a reaction ball tossing game wherein the board is a 16″×16″×4″ surface with a deflection tower and three holes designed for keeping track of scoring. The deflection tower is centrally located at the top edge of the board to allow the reaction ball a chance to either bounce into one of the cutouts or into the field of play for the defense.

[0010] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth to clearly describe various specific embodiments disclosed herein. One skilled in the art, however, will understand that the presently claimed invention may be practiced without all of the specific details discussed below. In other instances, well known features have not been described so as not to obscure the invention.

[0011] It is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology used herein is for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting. The use of “including,”“comprising,” or “having” and variations thereof herein is meant to encompass the items listed thereafter and equivalents thereof as well as additional items. Unless limited otherwise, the terms “connected,”“coupled,” and “mounted,” and variations thereof herein are used broadly and encompass direct and indirect connections, couplings, and mountings. In addition, the terms “connected” and “coupled”, and variations thereof are not restricted to physical or mechanical connections or couplings.

[0012] The present subject matter comprises of a playing board and a system for playing the game.

[0013] The playing board 5 comprises of a 16″×16″×4″ surface with three circular holes cut out of the top surface and a deflection tower connected to the top surface.

[0014] The deflection tower 10 is centrally affixed to the top surface 15 of the playing board along the top edge so as to provide a surface for the reaction ball to bounce off of the board or into the surrounding grass.

[0015] The deflection tower is a triangular prism centrally located 4″ from the left edge and 4″ from the right edge of the playing board. The length of the triangular prism, which is affixed to the playing board surface, is 8″, while each leg of the triangular prism, which protrudes from the playing board surface, is 3.5″. The deflection tower has a width or hypotenuse of 4.95″ so the reaction ball has a chance to bounce from the deflection tower into one of the three scoring cutouts.

[0016] While the total length of each protruding leg of the triangular prism is 3.5″, as shown in FIG. 2, the deflection tower is constructed from a front board that is 3.5″ in length and a back board that is 3″ in length.

[0017] The playing board further comprises of three scoring cutouts. The large scoring cutouts have 5″ diameters while the small scoring cutout has a 3″ diameter.

[0018] The center of large scoring cutout 20 is located 8″ from the top and bottom edge of the playing surface and 4″ from the left edge of the playing surface. The center of large scoring cutout 25 is located 8″ from the top and bottom edge of the playing surface and 4″ from the right edge of the playing surface.

[0019] The center of the small scoring cutout 30 is located 8″ from the left and right edges of the playing surface and 4″ from the bottom edge of the playing surface.

[0020] Each scoring cutout has a catching net (35, 40, 45) that is affixed to the circumference of each cutout to prevent the reaction ball 50 from bouncing out of the goals. The reaction ball may also comprise of a ball with a more uniform surface such as a tennis ball or other type of bouncy ball.

[0021] A bottom surface 55 of the playing board comprises of a 16″×16″×0.5″ board which provides support and rigidity for side boards 60. The bottom surface is affixed to the side boards wherein the side boards are affixed to the top surface. The side boards are 4″×″16″×1″ in dimensions and cut at 45-degree angles for the corners.

[0022] The rules of the game are as follows:

[0023] Offensive Team: Team that is tossing the ball to opposing board.

[0024] Defensive Team: Team that is attempting to catch the ball after the bounce.

[0025] A turn is defined as when the offensive team starts throwing to when the defensive team ends up with both balls. This is when the offensive team turns into the defensive team.

[0026] Place boards 10 feet apart from front of board to front of board.

[0027] Deflection towers must be placed at the back of the board (farthest distance away from the opponent) with the smaller hole to the front of the board (closest distance to the opponent).

[0028] Teammates stand around the same board as the other two players will stand at the opposite board 10 feet away.

[0029] The game is played to 21. A team cannot go over 21 and must hit 21 exactly. If a team goes over 21, their score drops back to 15.

[0030] All players must remain behind the front edge of the board on their side before every throw until the first bounce occurs. A player cannot step in front of the board or block the opposing team's vision of the board. A player must wait for all other players to be ready before tossing a ball.

[0031] The defensive team may not attempt to catch the ball until one bounce has occurred.

[0032] All throws must be underhand.

[0033] Any ball that hits the grass is a dead ball and cannot result in any points. A ball that hits the grass may be grabbed by either team.

[0034] The starting team to throw, grab one reaction ball for each player on your team. Each player throws one ball per turn to start.

[0035] When a ball is thrown at the opposing board, if the ball hits the board and bounces back at the player who threw, it is a race between teams to gather the ball.

[0036] If the throwing team gathers the ball, the player who threw the ball gets to throw another time from behind the front of their own board.

[0037] If the defensive team gathers the ball, hold the ball until both balls are in defensive teams' possession to start their turn.

[0038] All balls that go behind the defensive board are out of play. The offensive throwing team cannot chase behind the defensive team's board.Points:

[0039] 1 point for the defensive team if a catch occurs after the initial bounce off the board or the deflection tower without the ball hitting the grass around them. Ball may hit board multiple times and still count as a point if caught.

[0040] 1 point for the defensive team if an offensive player misses the opposing board by hitting the grass before the board or missing entirely.

[0041] 1 point for offensive team if toss hits any part of the deflection tower and defensive team is unable to catch the ball.

[0042] 3 points for offensive team if the ball makes it into one of the two larger holes.

[0043] 5 points for offensive team if the ball makes it into the smaller hole at the front of the board.

[0044] If the offensive team makes a ball into the three hole and the five hole at any time in the same turn, the game is ended and the offensive team wins.

[0045] If the offensive team tosses the ball and hits a defensive player after the bounce off the board and goes into any hole, the offensive team wins.
