CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] The present application claims priority from U.S. Provisional No. 63 / 668,815, filed on Jul. 9, 2024, entitled SHAPEWEAR SHORTS FOR USE WITH A MEDICAL DEVICE, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates generally to undergarment apparel, and more particularly to undergarment shorts for discreetly carrying medical devices, such as those used for routine injections of insulin, and / or other accessories.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Millions of people suffer from the condition known as diabetes, including insulin-dependent diabetes (also referred to as “Type 1” diabetes). In order to manage the condition, routine injections of insulin are required to manage glucose levels in the body. Some people are able to manage the condition with insulin injections on an occasional basis, while other people need frequent and routine injections of insulin. In some instances, quick access to an insulin injection may be a lifesaving factor for a diabetes patient. For many diabetic people, the timing of their insulin injections is based on their glucose level measurements. Should a person suddenly feel ill, an on the spot glucose measurement is taken, and the appropriate level of insulin is subsequently administered.

[0004] In such an example, the insulin can be administered with preloaded single dose injectables or can be administered with a programmable injection pump assembly having an insulin injection pump and a tethered access port. The insulin injection pump can be programmed to deliver a precise amount of insulin based on the glucose readings. The access port contains a needle that pierces the person's skin. In some instances, a subcutaneous cannula or needle is inserted through the skin and remains in place for two to three days before being switched out (e.g., to minimize site reactions and the risk of infection). Namely, some users of insulin pumps maintain a physical connection to the insulin pump continuously (or for most of the time).

[0005] While the insulin injection pump assemblies are a convenient way to be treated with varying doses of insulin, the insulin pump device itself may be bulky. One common approach is to clip the insulin pump, secured in a protective case, to the wearer's waistband or bra. However, this method is not feasible when wearing clothing such as dresses that lack a waistband. In such examples, such placement of an insulin pump presents challenges if a user prefers to be discreet, without creating a bulge in the clothing or external attachment created by the presence of the insulin injection pump. Multiple types of insulin pumps may be available for a user, including patch-style or tubeless pumps (e.g. Omnipod).

[0006] For some users, the lack of ability to discreetly store a medically necessary device such as an insulin pump may cause physical and / or emotional discomfort. This is particularly true in cases in which the clothing worn is tight fitting (e.g., a form fitting dress or skirt) or otherwise not supportive of a clip, waistband, or other external storage. Even if a user was to place the medical device (e.g., insulin pump) in a large, external pocket, the pocket may be sewn on the outside of the clothing rendering the contents more apparent, thus providing no discreet or comfortable solution. What is more, traditional pockets may be shallow, causing a medical device to remain unsecured or causing the medical device to fall out of the shallow pocket. Further, if the medical device is carried beneath a tight fitting piece of clothing, it may create an unwanted visible bulge, and access to the device requires that the person partially or fully remove the tight clothing in order to access the device, thus further compromising the privacy and options available to the user. Moreover, traditional pockets may not allow for tubing pass-through for certain medical devices.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Accordingly, there is need for a solution that provides more comfortable and discreet access to necessary medical devices that may require extensive or full time storage within reach of the user's body. There remains a need for an undergarment that secures, for example, a tethered insulin pump, safely routes tubing, and allows discreet yet accessible operation without exposing the wearer. Additionally, such a garment may keep emergency medical supplies-such as glucagon or glucose tablets-close at hand. The larger front thigh pocket may also accommodate a smartphone, which in some cases acts as a CGM receiver or is used to control insulin delivery (e.g., with Tandem pumps). Users of tethered insulin pumps (e.g., insulin pumps connected to the body via flexible tubing) may be among the users that benefit from the shapewear systems and methods described herein.

[0008] The present invention is directed to a pair of undergarment shorts (e.g., shapewear shorts, undergarments) for concealing, for example, a medical device under a (e.g. tight fitting) dress or skirt. The pair of undergarment shorts described herein may have two different pockets, providing options for accessing a tethered insulin pump from beneath the hem of a dress or skirt, depending on the occasion. In some embodiments, the pair of undergarment shorts may be shapewear shorts and have an inner thigh pocket for use with form-fitting, bodycon-style dresses for which the user may have a desire to hide the insulin pump without creating a bulge underneath the garment. In some embodiments, the undergarments may have a large front thigh pocket for easy access, intended for use with looser garments that may flow (e.g., a dress, skirt). In some embodiments, the undergarments may also hold emergency supplies or other items (e.g., a smartphone) as needed. The pocket defines a hollow interior and includes an access slot adjacent to a bottom edge of the pocket. Various horizontal and vertical closure mechanisms are provided for opening and closing the access slot.

Though the examples disclosed herein may refer to shapewear shorts, one of skill in the art will recognize the same features can be implemented in undergarment shorts that are not shapewear, and the instant disclosure (even when referencing shapewear shorts) therefore also applies to undergarment shorts that are not shapewear (e.g., not made of shapewear material). Claims

1. Undergarments for use in storing a device, the undergarments comprising:a garment comprising a first leg and a second leg, wherein the first leg and the second leg comprise sections of fabric;a first pocket positioned on the first leg, wherein the first pocket defines a hollow interior, and wherein the first pocket comprises a first access slot to the hollow interior, wherein the first pocket extends on an inner thigh portion of the first leg from a front side of the garment to a rear side of the garment; anda second pocket positioned on a front of the second leg, the second pocket comprising a second access slot,wherein the first pocket and the second pocket are positioned on the garment so that a wearer of the undergarments does not reposition an outerwear garment to access an item from the first pocket or the second pocket.

2. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the sections of fabric comprise shapewear four-way fabric.

3. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first access slot or the second access slot comprises a zipper.

4. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first pocket comprises a first pocket opening at a base of the first pocket, and wherein the second pocket comprises a second pocket opening at a base of the second pocket.

5. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first access slot or the second access slot comprises an overlapping fabric closure.

6. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first pocket or the second pocket is attached to an inner surface of the undergarments with an inner seam in contact with the wearer.

7. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first pocket or second pocket is configured to receive and hold a medical device.

8. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the first pocket further comprises a top access opening at a top edge of the first pocket on a front side of the undergarments adjacent to a front edge of the first pocket.

9. The undergarments of claim 1, wherein the second pocket further comprises a top access opening at a top edge of the second pocket on a front side of the undergarments adjacent to a front edge of the second pocket.

10. The undergarments of claim 9, wherein the top access opening comprises at least one of: a seam gap, a buttonhole, or an edge seam.

11. A method of designing undergarments for use in concealing a device, the undergarments comprising:assembling a garment having fabric for a first leg and a second leg;attaching a first pocket on the first leg, wherein the first pocket defines a hollow interior, and wherein the first pocket comprises a first access slot to the hollow interior, wherein the first pocket extends on an inner thigh portion of the first leg from a front side of the garment to a rear side of the garment; andattaching a second pocket on the second leg; wherein the second pocket on the second leg comprises an access slot, wherein the first pocket and the second pocket are positioned on the garment so that a wearer of the undergarments does not reposition an outerwear garment to access an item from the first pocket or the second pocket.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein attaching the first pocket includes attaching the first pocket to the first leg so that the access slot to the first pocket is adjacent to an edge seam of the first leg, and wherein the edge seam wraps around an inner thigh of a wearer of the garment.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the first pocket allows tubing of an insulin pump to pass through an edge seam.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the second pocket comprises a second edge seam, and wherein the second edge seam allows tubing of an insulin pump to pass through the second edge seam.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein sizing of the undergarments includes extended sizing of at least one of:XXS,XXXS,XXL,XXXL,4XL, or5XL.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the access slot comprises an invisible zipper, a zipper, a hook and eye, a hook and loop fastener, an overlapping fabric closure, or a snap button.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein assembling a garment includes sewing an invisible hem of the garment on an inner panel of the garment to attach the first pocket.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein assembling a garment includes sewing an invisible hem of the garment on an inner panel of the garment to attach the second pocket.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the first pocket or the second pocket stores an emergency glucose supply, a medical device, a smartphone, a wallet, keys, a protective device, or a travel document.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the undergarments compress a silhouette of a wearer with a tight fit to a body part of the wearer.
