[0002] The present application relates to accessories for chairs, including spa chairs, and spa chairs having such accessories, and more particularly, to integrated arm trays for spa chairs that are stowable within an arm of the chair and spa chairs having such integrated arm trays.BACKGROUND
[0003] Food and drink trays attached to chairs have been previously used in various settings, including dining areas, theaters, airplanes, automobiles, and childcare furniture. These trays provide a convenient surface for holding meals, beverages, and personal items, improving the user experience by reducing the need for separate tables or hand-held support.
[0004] Early designs of chair-mounted trays were primarily fixed structures, limiting their versatility. Over time, adjustable, foldable, and detachable trays were developed to enhance functionality, ease of storage, and user comfort. Modern tray designs now incorporate features such as swivel mechanisms, sliding tracks, and collapsible arms, allowing users to position the tray as needed and store the tray when not in use.
[0005] Salon spa chairs are specialized seating units designed to provide comfort and convenience for clients receiving spa treatments such as pedicures, manicures, facials, skin treatments, and the like. Modern pedicure spa chairs typically include a cushioned seat, armrests, a footrest, and a built-in foot spa basin. Some models incorporate features such as hydrotherapy jets, pipeless whirlpool systems, robotic massages, electronic seat-position adjustments, and even touchscreen controls, programmable settings, and / or remote controls to operate the spa chair features. The controls may allow the technician and / or the client to customize and adjust these features, such as by controlling massage intensity, water temperature, and jet functions. Some spa chairs also have Bluetooth connectivity and entertainment features, such as built-in speakers, to further enhance the client experience.
[0006] However, there is a need for an improved arm tray for a chair having a simple design which can be easily deployed for use as a table, stowed out of the way, and adjusted to a user's preference. In addition, salon spa chairs typically do not include a tray, and those that do have trays which are complicated, cumbersome, not stowable out of the way, not adjustable, and / or unsightly. Accordingly, there is also a need for an improved arm tray for salon spa chairs which are easily deployed, adjustable, and stowable out of the way.SUMMARY
[0007] Disclosed herein are innovatively designed arm trays for chairs, including spa chairs, for providing a convenient surface for placing items such as drinks, food, and other items, being easily accessible to a user seated in the chair. The arm trays are mounted to, and stowable completely within, the arm of the chair. Once stowed, the arm trays are easily deployed from the arm by rotating the arm tray out from within the arm to a deployed position wherein items, such as drinks, food, and also tools and supplies to be used in providing a spa treatment, can be placed on a surface of the arm tray. A user may also rest the user's arms and / or hands on the surface of the arm tray while receiving a spa treatment, such as a manicure, hand massage or other hand treatment. In some embodiments, the arm tray may have multiple panels pivotally attached to each other such that the panels can be folded and unfolded to provide a larger tray surface. Also disclosed herein are spa chairs comprising such arm trays.
[0008] Accordingly, one embodiment disclosed herein is directed to an arm tray for a spa chair wherein the arm tray is completely stowable within an arm of the spa chair. The arm tray comprises a first tray panel. The first tray panel may have any suitable shape, such as a rectangular shape, oval shape, rhombus shape, or the like. The first tray panel has a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter.
[0009] The arm tray has an axle having an axis of rotation. The axle is disposed on the first tray panel proximate the first end of the first tray panel such that the first tray panel is rotatable about the axis of rotation. The axle is configured to be attached to an arm of a chair such that the axis of rotation is substantially vertical and the first tray panel is rotatable in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation.

In another aspect, the second tray panel may be coupled to the first tray panel such that when the first tray panel is deployed to an inner side of the arm of the chair such that the first tray panel extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel whereby when the second tray panel is in the open position it extends forward (i.e., away from a seat of the spa chair) of the first tray panel.
[0014] Another embodiment disclosed herein is directed to a chair, including a spa chair, comprising any of the arm trays disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a chair having an arm tray includes a seat for a person to sit upon. The seat includes a front side, a back side, a left side and a right side. The chair has a first arm extending upward to the outside of one of the left side of the seat or the right side of the seat. The first arm has a horizontal slot which is open on an inner side of the arm and open on an outer side of the arm.

[0030] Turning now to the drawings, FIGS. 1-2 illustrate one embodiment of an arm tray 100 for a chair, such as a spa chair. The arm tray 100 is attachable to, and stowable within, i.e., retractable or hideaway, an arm 102 of a chair (not shown in FIGS. 1-2). The arm tray 100 includes a first tray panel 104. The first tray panel 104 in the disclosed embodiment has a rectangular shape. The first tray panel 104 has an attachment portion 106 which is disposed within a horizontal slot 122 in the arm 102. The first tray panel 104 also has a tray portion 108 extending from the attachment portion 106. The first tray panel 104 has a first end 110, a second end 112 opposite the first end 110, a first side 114, a second side 115 opposite the first side 114, a top surface 116 and an outer perimeter 118. In the illustrated embodiment of FIGS. 1-2, the attachment portion 106 of the first tray panel 104 has a larger thickness than the tray portion 108. For instance, the attachment portion 106 has a thickness slightly smaller than a thickness of the slot 122, and the thickness of the tray portion 108 is about one-half the thickness of the attachment portion 106. As described below, this allows the arm tray 100 to fit into the slot 122 when a second tray panel 128 is stacked onto the top of the tray portion 108 of the first tray panel 104. In an alternative embodiment in which the arm tray 100 only comprises only a single tray panel, i.e. the first tray panel 104, the entire first tray panel 104 may have a uniform thickness slightly less than the thickness of the slot 122. In other words, the attachment portion 106 and the tray portion 108 of the first tray panel may be the same thickness.
[0031] The arm tray 100 is rotatably attached to the arm 102 via an axle 120 having an axis of rotation. The axis of rotation is substantially vertical such that the arm tray 100 rotates in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation. The axle 120 is operably coupled to the attachment portion 106 of the first tray panel 104 proximate the first end 110 of the first tray panel 104. Thus, the first tray panel 104 is rotatable within and through the slot 122 about the axis of rotation. The axle 120 is also attached to the arm 102 of the chair such that the axis of rotation is substantially vertical and the first tray panel 104 is rotatable in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation.
[0032] The first tray panel 104 is sized and positioned such that the outer perimeter 118 fits substantially entirely within the slot 122 of the arm 102 of the chair, as best shown in FIG. 2. The first tray panel 104 and axle 120 are also configured such that the first tray panel 104 is rotatable about the axle 120 between a stowed position in which the first tray panel 104 is positioned entirely within the horizontal slot 122 as shown in FIG. 2, and a first deployed position in which at least a portion of the first tray panel 104 is outside of the slot 122 such that items can be placed on the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104 as shown in FIG. 1. Thus, the arm tray 100 may be easily deployed and adjusted for use, and then stowed completely or at least substantially completely within the arm 102 of the chair and out of the way when not needed.
[0033] The slot 122 is a through-slot that extends across the entire width of the arm 102 such that the slot 122 is open on both sides of the arm 102. This allows the arm tray 100 to rotate 360° about the axle 120 in either direction, clockwise or counterclockwise from any position back to the same position. Accordingly, the arm tray 100 can be rotated to the first deployed position located to an inner side of the arm 102 of the chair such that the first tray panel 104 extends inwardly over a seat of the chair as shown in FIG. 1, and to a second deployed position such that the first tray panel 104 is located to an outer side of the arm 102 of the chair such that the first tray panel 104 extends laterally outward away from the seat of the chair as shown in FIG. 3.
[0034] The arm tray 100 also comprises a second tray panel 128 coupled to the first tray panel 104 such that the second tray panel 128 can be positioned abutting the first tray panel 104 thereby providing a larger tray surface. The second tray panel 128 has a first end 130, a second end 132 opposite the first end 130, a first side 134, a second side 136 opposite the first side 134, a top surface 138 and an outer perimeter 140. The second tray panel 128 is pivotally connected to the first tray panel via a pair of hinges 142. The hinges 142 allow the second tray panel 128 to be pivoted between a first position which is a closed or stacked position in which the second tray panel 128 is stacked onto the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104 (see FIG. 2 which shows the tray panels 104 and 128 stowed in this first position), and a second position which is an open position in which the second tray panel 128 is positioned adjacent the first tray panel 104 such that the top surface 138 of the second tray panel 128 and the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104 are substantially co-planar (see FIG. 1). Accordingly, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, the top surface 138 of the second tray panel 128 is combined with the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104 to provide a larger tray surface. For example, the second tray panel 128 may be about the same shape and size as the first tray panel 104 such that the combined tray surface is twice as large as the top surface 116 of just the first tray panel 104. Alternatively, the second tray panel 128 may be a different size and / or shape than the first tray panel 104. For example, the second tray panel 128 may be smaller or larger (for example, a smaller width or larger width) than the first tray panel 104, or the second tray panel 128 may be a different shape such as a semi-circle having a diameter that is the same width as the first tray panel 104. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1-3, the second tray panel 128 is coupled to the first tray panel 104 such that when the arm tray 100 is deployed to an inner side of the arm 102 of the chair such that the first tray panel 104 extends inwardly over a seat of the chair as shown in FIG. 1, the first side 114 of the first tray panel 104 faces forward (i.e., away from a seat back 206 of a chair 200, as shown in FIGS. 4-7), and the second side 136 of the second tray panel 128 is pivotally coupled via the hinges 142 to the first side 114 of the first tray panel 104 whereby when the second tray panel 128 extends forward (from the perspective of a person seated in the chair) of the first tray panel 104 in the open position. Alternatively, the second tray panel 128 can be pivotally coupled via the hinges 142 to the second side 115 of the first tray panel 104, in which case when the arm tray 100 is deployed to the inner side of the arm 102 of the chair as shown in FIG. 1 such that the first tray panel 104 extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the second tray panel 128 extends backward (from the perspective of a person seated in the chair, i.e., towards the seat back 206 of the chair 200) in the open position.
[0035] Referring now to FIGS. 4-7, one embodiment of a spa chair 200 having arm trays 100a and 100b installed on arms 102a and 102b respectively of the spa chair 200 is illustrated. Although the embodiment depicted in FIGS. 4-7 includes two arm trays 100a and 100b, it is understood that the spa chair 200 may include just a single arm tray 100 installed on either of the arms 102a or 102b. In addition, the arm trays 100a and 100b may be any of the arm trays disclosed herein, including without limitation, the arm tray 100 shown in FIGS. 1-3 and described above.
[0036] The spa chair 200 comprises a seat 202 having a seat bottom 204 and a seat back 206. The seat bottom 204 has a front side 208, a back side 210, a left side 212 and a right side 214 (from the perspective of a person seated in the spa chair 200). In addition, the first arm tray 100a and second arm tray 100b are each rotated to a first deployed position in which the tray 100a, 100b extends inwardly over the seat bottom 204 of the spa chair 200. In this first deployed position of rotation, each of the first arm tray 100a and second arm tray 100b may have the second tray panel 128 in the closed position in which the second tray panel 128 is stacked onto the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104.
[0039] Turning now to FIG. 5, the first arm tray 100a and second arm tray 100b are in a second deployed position. Similar to the positions of the trays 100a, 100b shown in FIG. 4, the first arm tray 100a and second arm tray 100b are in an open position in which each respective arm tray 100a, 100b has the second tray panel 128 in the open position such that the first tray panel 104 and second tray panel 128 form a combined larger tray. In FIG. 5, the first arm tray 100a and second arm tray 100b are each rotated to the second deployed position in which the tray 100a, 100b is located to an outer side of the respective arm 102a, 102b of the spa chair 200 such that the tray 100a, 100b extends laterally outward away from the seat 204. The respective second tray panel 128 can then be pivoted to the open position adjacent the first tray panel 104 such that the top surface 116 of the first tray panel 104 and the top surface of the second tray panel 128 are substantially co-planar, thereby forming a larger tray.

The foot spa basin 218 has a drain (not shown) connected to a drain tube (not shown) for draining the liquid out of the foot spa basin 218. The spa chair 200 may also comprise one or more footrests 220 mounted to the base 216 in front of the foot spa basin 218. Claims
1. An arm tray for a chair, comprising:a first tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter;an axle having an axis of rotation, the axle disposed on the first tray panel proximate the first end of the first tray panel such that the first tray panel is rotatable about the axis of rotation, the axle configured to be attached to an arm of a chair such that the axis of rotation is substantially vertical and the first tray panel is rotatable in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation;wherein the first tray panel is configured such that the outer perimeter fits substantially entirely within a horizontal slot of the arm of the chair, and such that the first tray panel is rotatable between a stowed position in which the first tray panel is positioned substantially entirely within the horizontal slot and a deployed position in which at least a portion of the first tray panel is outside of the horizontal slot such that items can be placed on the top surface of the first tray panel.
2. The arm tray of claim 1, wherein the first tray panel is configured to allow 360 degrees of rotation about the axis of rotation such that the first tray panel can be rotated about the axis of rotation clockwise from the stowed position to a first deployed position at an inner side of the arm of the chair, further clockwise to a second deployed position extending forward of the arm of the chair, further clockwise to a third deployed position at an outer side of the arm of the chair, and further clockwise back to the stowed position.
3. The arm tray of claim 2, further comprising a second tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter, wherein the second side of the second tray panel is hingedly coupled to the first side of the first tray panel by a hinge, and wherein the second tray panel is pivotable about the hinge relative to the first tray panel from a stacked position in which the second tray panel rests on top of the first tray panel and an open position in which the second tray panel is adjacent and co-planar to the first tray panel.
4. The arm tray of claim 3, wherein when the first tray panel is deployed to an inner side of the arm of the chair such that the first tray panel extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel such that when the second tray panel is in the open position the second tray panel extends forward of the first tray panel.
5. The arm tray of claim 1, further comprising:a second tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter, the second tray panel pivotally connected to the first tray panel such that the second tray panel can be pivoted between a closed position in which the second tray panel is stacked onto the top surface of the first tray panel and an open position in which the second tray panel is positioned adjacent the first tray panel such that the top surface of the second tray panel and the top surface of the first tray panel are substantially co-planar.
6. The arm tray of claim 5, wherein when the first tray panel is deployed to an inner side of the arm of the chair such that the first tray panel extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel such that when the second tray panel is in the open position the second tray panel extends forward of the first tray panel.
7. A chair, comprising:a seat for a person to sit upon, the seat having a front side, a back side, a left side and a right side;a first arm extending upward to the outside of one of the left side of the seat or the right side of the seat, the first arm having a horizontal slot open on an inner side of the first arm and on an outer side of the first arm;a first arm tray, comprising:a first tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter; andan axle having an axis of rotation, the axle disposed on the first tray panel proximate the first end of the first tray panel such that the first tray panel is rotatable about the axis of rotation;wherein the first tray panel is rotatably mounted within the horizontal slot via the axle being attached to the first arm such that the axis of rotation is substantially vertical and the first tray panel is rotatable in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation, wherein the outer perimeter of the first tray panel fits substantially entirely within the horizontal slot of the first arm of the chair, and the first tray panel is rotatable between a stowed position entirely within the horizontal slot and a deployed position at least partially outside of the horizontal slot such that items can be placed on the top surface of the first tray panel.
8. The chair or claim 7, wherein the first tray panel is configured to allow 360 degrees of rotation about the axis of rotation such that the first tray panel can be rotated about the axis of rotation clockwise from the stowed position to a first deployed position at an inner side of the first arm of the chair, further clockwise to a second deployed position extending forward of the first arm of the chair, further clockwise to a third deployed position at an outer side of the first arm of the chair, and further clockwise back to the stowed position.
9. The chair of claim 8, further comprising a second tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter, wherein the second side of the second tray panel is hingedly coupled to the first side of the first tray panel by a hinge, and wherein the second tray panel is pivotable about the hinge relative to the first tray panel from a closed position in which the second tray panel rests on top of the first tray panel and an open position in which the second tray panel is adjacent and co-planar to the first tray panel.
10. The chair of claim 9, wherein when the first tray panel is deployed to an inner side of the first arm of the chair such that the first tray panel extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel such that when the second tray panel is in the open position the second tray panel extends forward of the first tray panel.
11. The chair of claim 7, further comprising:a second tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a top surface and an outer perimeter, the second tray panel pivotally connected to the first tray panel such that the second tray panel can be pivoted between a closed position in which the second tray panel is stacked onto the top surface of the first tray panel and an open position in which the second tray panel is positioned adjacent the first tray panel such that the top surface of the second tray panel and the top surface of the first tray panel are substantially co-planar.
12. The chair of claim 11, wherein when the first tray panel is deployed to an inner side of the first arm of the chair such that the first tray panel extends inwardly over a seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel such that when the second tray panel is in the open position the second tray panel extends forward of the first tray panel.
13. The chair of claim 7, further comprising:a second arm extending upward to the outside of the other of the left side of the seat or the right side of the seat, the second arm having a horizontal slot open on an inner side of the second arm and on an outer side of the second arm;a second arm tray, comprising:a first tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end of the first tray panel, a first side, a second side opposite the first side of the first tray panel, a top surface and an outer perimeter; andan axle having an axis of rotation, the axle of the second arm tray disposed on the first tray panel of the second arm tray proximate the first end of the first tray panel of the second arm tray such that the first tray panel of the second arm tray is rotatable about the axis of rotation of the axle of the second arm tray;wherein the first tray panel of the second arm tray is rotatably mounted within the horizontal slot of the second arm via the axle of the second arm tray being attached to the second arm such that the axis of rotation of the axle of the second arm tray is substantially vertical and the first tray panel of the second arm tray is rotatable in a substantially horizontal plane about the axis of rotation of the axle of the second arm tray, wherein the outer perimeter of the first tray panel of the second arm tray fits substantially entirely within the horizontal slot of the second arm of the chair, and the first tray panel of the second arm tray is rotatable between a stowed position entirely within the horizontal slot of the second arm and a deployed position at least partially outside of the horizontal slot of the second arm such that items can be placed on the top surface of the first tray panel of the second arm tray.
14. The chair of claim 13, wherein the first tray panel of the second arm tray is configured to allow 360 degrees of rotation about the axis of rotation of the axle of the second arm tray such that the first tray panel of the second arm tray can be rotated clockwise about the axis of rotation of the axle of the second arm tray from the stowed position to a first deployed position at an inner side of the second arm of the chair, further clockwise to a second deployed position extending forward of the second arm of the chair, further clockwise to a third deployed position at an outer side of the second arm of the chair, and further clockwise back to the stowed position.
15. The chair of claim 13, wherein the second arm tray further comprises a second tray panel, the second tray panel of the second arm tray having a first end, a second end opposite the first end of the second arm tray of the second tray panel, a first side, a second side opposite the first side of the second arm tray of the second tray panel, a top surface and an outer perimeter, wherein the second side of the second tray panel of the second arm tray is hingedly coupled to the first side of the first tray panel of the second arm tray by a hinge, and wherein the second tray panel of the second arm tray is pivotable about the hinge of the second arm tray relative to the first tray panel of the second arm tray from a closed position in which the second tray panel of the second arm tray rests on top of the first tray panel of the second arm tray and an open position in which the second tray panel of the second arm tray is adjacent and co-planar to the first tray panel of the second arm tray.
16. The chair of claim 15, wherein when the first tray panel of the second arm tray is deployed to an inner side of the second arm of the chair such that the first tray panel of the second arm tray extends inwardly over the seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel of the second arm tray faces forward, and the second side of the second tray panel of the second arm tray is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel of the second arm tray such that when the second tray panel of the second arm tray is in the open position the second tray panel of the second arm tray extends forward of the first tray panel of the second arm tray.
17. The chair of claim 13, wherein the second arm tray further comprises a second tray panel having a first end, a second end opposite the first end of the second tray panel of the second arm tray, a first side, a second side opposite the first side of the second tray panel of the second arm tray, a top surface and an outer perimeter, the second tray panel of the second arm tray pivotally connected to the first tray panel of the second arm tray such that the second tray panel of the second arm tray can be pivoted between a closed position in which the second tray panel of the second arm tray is stacked onto the top surface of the first tray panel of the second arm tray and an open position in which the second tray panel of the second arm tray is positioned adjacent the first tray panel of the second arm tray such that the top surface of the second tray panel of the second arm tray and the top surface of the first tray panel of the second arm tray are substantially co-planar.
18. The chair of claim 17, wherein when the first tray panel of the second arm tray is deployed to an inner side of the second arm of the chair such that the first tray panel of the second arm tray extends inwardly over the seat of the chair, the first side of the first tray panel of the second arm tray faces forward, and wherein the second side of the second tray panel of the second arm tray is pivotally coupled to the first side of the first tray panel of the second arm tray such that when the second tray panel of the second arm tray is in the open position the second tray panel of the second arm tray extends forward of the first tray panel of the second arm tray.
19. The chair of claim 7, wherein the chair is a salon spa chair, and the chair further comprises:a base upon which the chair is mounted, the base configured for resting on a support surface; anda foot spa basin mounted on the base and positioned forwardly and below the seat of the chair.
20. The chair of claim 13, wherein the chair is a salon spa chair, and the chair further comprises:a base upon which the chair is mounted, the base configured for resting on a support surface; anda foot spa basin mounted on the base and positioned forwardly and below the seat of the chair.
