Abstract
Description
Data synchronization device and method
[0001] This application claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0075260 filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on June 13, 2023, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0002] The present invention relates to a data synchronization device and method, and more particularly, to a BMS data synchronization device and method for synchronizing BMS data between a battery management system (BMS) and an upper control period.
[0003] An Energy Storage System (ESS) connects renewable energy sources, batteries that store power, and existing grid power. With the recent expansion of smart grids and renewable energy sources, and the emphasis on power system efficiency and stability, demand for energy storage systems is increasing to manage power supply and demand, as well as improve power quality. Depending on the intended use, energy storage systems can vary in output and capacity. Multiple battery systems can be interconnected to form large-capacity energy storage systems.
[0004] A battery module or battery pack, which constitutes a battery system, is a structure composed of multiple battery cells. If any of the battery cells experience overvoltage, overcurrent, or overheating, this can compromise the safety and operational efficiency of the battery module or battery pack. Therefore, a means of detecting these issues is essential. Therefore, a battery module or battery pack is equipped with a BMS (Battery Management System), which measures the voltage value of each battery cell and monitors and controls the voltage status of the battery cells based on the measured value.
[0005] The BMS operates in conjunction with other components, such as the inverter, periodically monitoring battery status data and transmitting it to the inverter or other upper-level controller. However, if the BMS receives a request for battery-related data from the inverter without defining the data to be transmitted in that cycle, the BMS will transmit the battery-related data defined in the previous cycle to the inverter. This can lead to data desynchronization issues, where data held by the BMS and the inverter do not match.
[0006] The purpose of the present invention to solve the above problems is to provide a data synchronization device that synchronizes data held by a BMS with data held by an upper controller.
[0007] Another object of the present invention to solve the above problems is to provide a data synchronization method that matches data held by a BMS with data held by an upper controller.
[0008] According to one embodiment of the present invention for achieving the above object, a data synchronization device comprises: at least one processor; and a memory storing at least one command executed through the at least one processor, wherein the at least one command may include: a command for processing BMS data measured according to a preset cycle; a command for generating an event related to the BMS data request and performing an operation related to the BMS data request event to synchronize network data when the BMS data request is received from a network before converting the BMS data into network data; and a command for transmitting the network data to the network.
[0009] The command to synchronize the above network data may include a command to call an event handler function related to the BMS data request; and a command to update network data for one or more communication protocols using the called event handler function.
[0010] The above communication protocol may include one or more of the Modbus CAN protocol, the Standard CAN protocol, and the RS485 protocol.
[0011] The at least one command may further include a command to perform a periodic network task performed according to the preset cycle when no BMS data request is received from the network, thereby converting the BMS data into network data according to a relevant communication protocol, thereby updating network data of the one or more communication protocols; and a command to transmit the updated network data to the network.
[0012] Meanwhile, the at least one command may further include a command to give priority to an action according to a call to the event handler function processed through a control task when the time point at which network data of one or more communication protocols are updated according to the preset cycle and the time point at which an event related to the BMS data request occurs coincide.
[0013] The above network may include a power converter (inverter) of an energy storage system.
[0014]
[0015] According to an embodiment of the present invention for achieving the above-described other object, a data synchronization method may include: a step of measuring battery status-related BMS (Battery Management System) data according to a preset cycle; a step of processing the BMS data measured according to the preset cycle; a step of generating an event related to the BMS data request and performing an operation related to the BMS data request event to synchronize the network data when the BMS data request is received from a network before converting the BMS data into network data; and a step of transmitting the network data to the network.
[0016] The step of synchronizing the above network data may include the step of calling an event handler function related to the BMS data request; and the step of updating network data for one or more communication protocols using the called event handler function.
[0017] The above communication protocol may include one or more of the Modbus CAN protocol, the Standard CAN protocol, and the RS485 protocol.
[0018] The above data synchronization method may further include a step of performing a periodic network task performed according to the preset cycle when a BMS data request is not received from the network, thereby converting the BMS data into network data according to a relevant communication protocol, thereby updating network data of one or more communication protocols; and a step of transmitting the updated network data.
[0019] Meanwhile, if the timing of updating network data of one or more communication protocols according to the above-mentioned basic cycle and the timing of occurrence of an event related to the BMS data request coincide, a step of preferentially performing an operation according to a call of the event handler function processed through a control task may be further included.
[0020] The above network may include a power converter (inverter) of an energy storage system.
[0021] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to prevent a problem of inconsistency between data held by the BMS and data held by the upper controller.
[0022] Accordingly, the battery status can be monitored and controlled more accurately in BMS and energy storage systems.

[0044]
[0045] Hereinafter, a preferred embodiment according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings.
[0046]
[0047] Figure 1 is a block diagram according to an example of an energy storage system to which the present invention can be applied.
[0048] Figure 1 shows an example of a DC coupled system in which the output terminal of a PV (Photovoltaic; solar power generation system) (700) is connected to the output terminal of a DC / DC converter (500) and the input terminal of a PCS (400).
[0049] Batteries, which play a role in storing power in an energy storage system, can typically be implemented in a form where multiple battery packs form a battery rack, and multiple battery racks form a battery bank. Here, depending on the device or system in which the battery is used, the battery pack may also be referred to as a battery module. Battery #1, Battery #2, , and Battery #N illustrated in FIG. 1 may be in the form of a battery rack.
[0050] At this time, a battery management system (BMS) (100) may be installed on each battery. The BMS (100) may monitor the current, voltage, and temperature of each battery rack (or pack) under its control, calculate the SOC (Status Of Charge) based on the monitoring results, and control charging and discharging. In the system of Fig. 1, if each battery is a battery rack, the BMS (100) may be a rack BMS (RBMS).
[0051] Meanwhile, the BMS (100) may include an MCU (Micro Controller Unit) or BMIC (Battery Monitoring Integrated Chip) for controlling internal components in conjunction with each other. Here, the BMIC may be an IC-type component located within the BMS and measuring information such as voltage, temperature, and current of the battery cell / module.
[0052] Each battery section, which includes a number of batteries and peripheral circuits, devices, etc., is equipped with a battery system control unit (Battery Sysetm Controller; BSC) (200) to monitor and control control targets such as voltage, current, temperature, circuit breaker, etc.
[0053] In addition, the power conversion / conditioning system (PCS) (400) installed in the battery system is also called an inverter and can control power supplied from the outside and power supplied from the battery system to the outside. In addition, the output of the DC / DC converter (500) can be connected to the PCS (400), and the PCS (400) can be connected to the grid (600). The PCS (400) typically operates in a constant power mode. A power management system (PMS) / energy management system (EMS) (300) connected to the PCS can control the output of the PCS based on the monitoring and control results of the BMS or BSC.
[0054] In the energy storage system of Fig. 1, battery #1 is connected to DC / DC converter #1, battery #2 is connected to DC / DC converter #2, and battery #N is connected to DC / DC #N. The output of the DC / DC converter corresponding to each battery is connected to the PCS (400) via a DC link.
[0055] A DC / DC converter can be a bidirectional converter, and when conversion is performed from the battery to the load, the input of the DC / DC converter can be connected to the battery (battery unit, battery rack, or battery pack), and the output of the DC / DC converter can be connected to the load. Various types of converters can be used, such as full-bridge converters, half-bridge converters, and flyback converters.
[0056] Meanwhile, communication (indicated by a dotted line in Fig. 1) can be performed between the BMS (100), BSC (200), PMS (300), and PCS (400) using CAN (Controller Area Network) or Ethernet.
[0057] According to one embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIG. 1, the BSC (200) that oversees the overall control of the battery area can report the status of each battery to the PMS (300). Here, the status of each battery can include information such as the SOC (Status Of Charge), SOH (Status Of Health), voltage, and temperature of each battery. The BSC (200) can provide information such as the limit power (P_battery_limit) and actual power (P_battery_real) of each battery to the PMS (300). The PMS (300), which oversees the control of the entire ESS system, issues a charge or discharge command (via P_pcs_reference) to the PCS (400) during actual system operation.
[0058] Here, the BSC (200) determines the output reference for each DC / DC converter by considering the status of each battery. In an embodiment according to the present invention, the output reference of each DC / DC converter can be set in different ways depending on whether it is in droop mode or constant power (CP) mode.
[0059] When the output of a DC / DC converter is controlled according to droop mode, the BSC can set a droop curve for each DC / DC converter and provide it to the corresponding converter by considering the condition of each battery before system operation. Meanwhile, when the DC / DC converter operates in CP mode, the power reference of each DC / DC converter can be determined during system operation and provided to the corresponding converter.
[0060] During actual operation of the energy storage system, the PMS transmits charge and discharge commands to the PCS and BSC. At this time, the PMS monitors the status of the solar power generation system (PV), grid, and battery in real time and determines the operating mode and output reference of system components based on operation commands received from the upper-level Energy Management System (EMS).
[0061] Meanwhile, the system of FIG. 1 is merely illustrated as an example of an energy storage system to which the present invention can be applied, and the present invention can be applied to various energy storage systems, such as an AC-coupled system in which a DC / AC inverter is connected to a solar power generation system, a DC / AC inverter is connected to a battery system, or an energy storage system not connected to a solar power generation system.
[0062]
[0063] FIG. 2 is a diagram conceptually illustrating a communication structure between a battery management device and an inverter according to the present invention.
[0064] As illustrated in FIG. 1, in an energy storage system, a battery management system (BMS) (100) can communicate with an upper controller, for example, an inverter. Here, the inverter may be a power conversion / conditioning system (PCS) (400) illustrated in FIG. 1.
[0065] The battery management device (100) may include communication protocols such as Modbus CAN protocol, standard CAN protocol, RS485 protocol, and communication software logic for communication with a network including an upper controller.
[0066] Here, the Standard CAN protocol refers to a common implementation of the Controller Area Network (CAN), which is widely used in the automotive industry and various other industrial applications.
[0067] Standard CAN is a communication system based on the CAN bus, enabling fast and reliable data transmission between multiple devices. The Standard CAN protocol segments data into packets and provides priority-based collision avoidance, error detection, and recovery functions to ensure reliable communication. Standard CAN offers flexibility in data transmission speed and capacity, typically operating at speeds of up to 1 Mbps.
[0068] Meanwhile, Modbus CAN combines the Modbus protocol and the CAN bus. It transmits Modbus commands over a CAN network, making it particularly useful in industrial automation systems. Modbus CAN facilitates communication between existing Modbus-based devices and systems using the CAN bus. Modbus CAN maintains the functionality and data format of the Modbus protocol while enabling communication over the CAN bus.
[0069] Meanwhile, RS485 is a serial communication interface used as a multi-drop bus standard, supporting data transmission by connecting multiple devices to a single bus. RS485 is widely used in various applications, including industrial automation, control systems, and network communications.
[0070] Data processed to suit various communication protocols in this way can be transmitted to one or more inverters (400) through input / output ports. Here, as illustrated in FIG. 2, multiple inverters can be matched to one BMS, and various protocols such as standard CAN, Modbus CAN, and RS485 can be used depending on the inverter specifications. In order to respond to various communication protocols, the BMS can perform a function of processing BMS data in accordance with the specifications of each communication protocol at a specific cycle.
[0071] The communication protocol illustrated in Fig. 2 is presented as an example to support communication between a battery management device and a higher-level system (an interconnect or other device within a network), and does not exclude other communication protocols.
[0072] The battery management device (BMD) measures cell data at regular intervals using the BMIC, processes this data into network data, and transmits it to the upper controller. Typically, the BMD transmits and receives data at set points in a regular cycle, thereby synchronizing the BMS data held by the BMD with the BMS data held by the upper controller.
[0073] However, there may be cases where the battery management device receives a battery data request from the inverter without defining the network data to be transmitted in that cycle. In this case, the battery management device transmits network data defined in the previous cycle (e.g., one second ago if the cycle is one second) to the inverter. This causes data mismatch between the battery management device and the inverter, and the upper controller may perform analysis and fault diagnosis based on inaccurate battery condition data.
[0074]
[0075] Figure 3 is an operation flowchart of a BMS data synchronization method according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0076] The BMS data synchronization method illustrated in FIG. 3 can be performed by a battery management device, a control unit within the battery management device, or a controller.
[0077] Referring to FIG. 3, the battery management device measures battery status-related BMS (Battery Management System) data according to a periodic data task processing procedure (S310) and processes the measured BMS data (S320). Here, data processing may include, for example, converting analog measurement values into digital values, adjusting the size or format of data to a form suitable for analysis or transmission, etc.
[0078] Thereafter, before converting BMS data into network data, if a BMS data request is received from the network, i.e., if an interrupt occurs (example of S330), the scheduled periodic network task is not performed, but an aperiodic control task is performed (S350).
[0079] More specifically, the battery management device calls an event handler function related to a BMS data request (S351) and performs an operation related to the BMS data request event to convert BMS data into network data, thereby synchronizing network data (S352). The synchronized network data is transmitted to the network using each communication protocol (S353).
[0080] Here, in the network data synchronization step (S352), the network data of one or more related communication protocols within the BMS can be updated using the called event handler function. Here, updating the network data may mean converting recent BMS data measured and processed by the data task into network data according to the related communication protocol.
[0081] At this time, the communication protocol may include one or more of the Modbus CAN protocol, the Standard CAN protocol, and the RS485 protocol.
[0082] Meanwhile, if no interrupt occurs because no BMS data request is received from the network (NO in S330), a periodic network task performed according to a preset cycle is performed (S340). That is, BMS data is converted into network data according to a relevant communication protocol (S341), and network data of one or more relevant communication protocols within the BMS is updated. Thereafter, the updated network data is transmitted to an upper controller within the network that requested the data (e.g., a power conversion device or inverter of an energy storage system) (S342).
[0083] The data tasks (S310, S320) and the periodic network task (S340) illustrated in FIG. 3 can be performed repeatedly at regular intervals. On the other hand, the aperiodic control task (S350) can be performed only when a request is generated from the network or an upper controller within the network.
[0084] Meanwhile, although not shown in FIG. 3, if the timing of updating network data of one or more communication protocols according to a preset cycle coincides with the timing of occurrence of a BMS data request event, an action according to a call to an event handler function processed through a control task is performed with priority.
[0085]
[0086] FIG. 4 is a diagram conceptually illustrating the operation of a network event handler according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0087] As previously discussed, the communication protocol according to the embodiment of the present invention may include the Modbus CAN protocol, the standard CAN protocol, and the rs485 protocol, and each protocol may execute the xxx_rx_isr function, the xxx_update_data function, and the xxx_send_data function.
[0088] Here, the xxx_rx_isr function receives a read / write request for BMS data and processes the requested service. The request may include periodic and aperiodic requests. In addition, the xxx_update_data function within each protocol converts BMS data into network data according to each communication protocol. The xxx_send_data function transmits the updated network data to the upper controller.
[0089] When no interrupt occurs, the modbus_can_update_data function of the Modbus CAN protocol, the standard_can_update_data function of the Standard CAN protocol, and the rs485_update_data function of the RS485 protocol can be called by a command from a network task that is periodically performed (e.g., a 1-second cycle update command in FIG. 4). By executing the update function, network data for each protocol is updated, and the updated data can be transmitted to the upper controller through the xxx_send_data function.
[0090] Meanwhile, in addition to periodically performed network tasks, if a read / write request for BMS data is received from the inverter via an external communication port (i.e., an interrupt occurs), the battery management device must immediately return the requested data. To this end, the battery management device registers the inverter's BMS data request as an event and, when a registered event occurs, calls an event handler function to process the event, thereby synchronizing the current BMS data with the network data.
[0091] Referring to Fig. 4, when a request from an aperiodic upper controller is received through the xxx_rx_isr function within each protocol, the event handler function included in the network event handler is called. Subsequently, the xxx_update_data function within each protocol is called by the update protocol data function, thereby converting BMS data into network data. The converted network data is transmitted to the upper controller that requested the data.
[0092] Meanwhile, when the update function within each protocol is simultaneously called by both periodic updates and inverter interrupts, the order of operations can be determined by considering task priorities. Event handlers are processed by the control task, which has a higher priority than the network task. Therefore, protocol updates called by the event handler are performed before periodic updates. Accordingly, protocol updates are performed by the control task, and to prevent duplication, the update sequence by the network task is not performed.
[0093]
