AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The existing battery designs often result in interference between the support bracket of the housing and the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) connected to the protection circuit module due to the fixed sealing height, necessitating structural modifications such as cutting the support bracket, which limits design freedom and increases complexity.

Method used

The battery pouch is formed asymmetrically, allowing the front sealing portion to be lowered in height, enabling the FPCB to be seated without interference and allowing the side sealing portion to be folded, thus eliminating unnecessary thickness and design constraints, while maintaining insulation and adhesive tape placement on a single surface.

Benefits of technology

This solution reduces interference between the support bracket and FPCB, allows for a more compact design, and enhances the flexibility of the protection circuit module's size, while maintaining battery capacity and insulation efficiency.

Description

Batteries and electronic devices containing them

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a battery having a pouch for accommodating an electrode assembly formed into an asymmetrical shape and an electronic device including the same.

[0002] A portable electronic device may include a housing and a battery disposed within the housing, the battery supplying power to the electronic device. The battery may include an electrode assembly that generates voltage according to the movement of electrons, and a pouch that accommodates the electrode assembly. The edges of the pouch may be sealed to insulate the electrode assembly accommodated within the pouch.

[0003] The battery is connected to the electrode assembly and may further include a protection circuit module (PCM) for protecting and controlling the battery. The protection circuit module may be located on one side of the front sealing portion. The height of the front sealing portion may vary depending on the forming shape of the pouch. For example, if the height of the front sealing portion is large (or long) depending on the forming shape of the pouch, interference may occur between the support bracket of the housing in which the battery is accommodated and the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) connected to the protection circuit module, and a portion of the support bracket may need to be cut to avoid the interference.

[0004] Various embodiments of the present disclosure can provide a battery and an electronic device including the same, wherein the height of a front sealing portion on which a protection circuit module (PCM) is mounted can be adjusted through asymmetrical shape forming of a pouch.

[0005] An electronic device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure may include a housing. The electronic device may include a battery disposed inside the housing and supplying power to the electronic device. The battery may include an electrode assembly. The battery may include an upper pouch and a lower pouch disposed to accommodate the electrode assembly. The battery may include a sealing portion formed at an edge of the upper pouch and the lower pouch to seal the electrode assembly. The lower pouch may include a first cup that is recessed downward and accommodates at least a portion of the electrode assembly, and the first cup may have a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and a side surface connecting the front surface and the rear surface. The sealing portion may include a front sealing portion that extends from the front surface of the first cup and is positioned at a height lower than an upper end of the rear surface of the first cup.

[0006] A battery according to one embodiment of the present disclosure may include an electrode assembly. The battery may include a pouch including an upper pouch and a lower pouch for accommodating the electrode assembly, and a sealing portion formed at an edge of the upper pouch and the lower pouch to seal the electrode assembly. The lower pouch may be recessed downward and include a first cup for accommodating at least a portion of the electrode assembly. The first cup may include a front surface, a rear surface opposite the front surface, and a side surface connecting the front surface and the rear surface. The sealing portion may include a front sealing portion extending from a front portion of the first cup and positioned lower than an upper end of the rear surface of the first cup.

[0007] A pouch according to one embodiment of the present disclosure may include an upper pouch configured to accommodate at least a portion of an electrode assembly. The pouch may include a lower pouch configured to accommodate at least a portion of the electrode assembly and connected to the upper pouch. The pouch may include a sealing portion formed at edges of the upper pouch and the lower pouch to seal the electrode assembly. The lower pouch may include a first cup that is recessed downward and accommodates at least a portion of the electrode assembly. The sealing portion may include a front sealing portion that extends from a front portion of the first cup and has a height lower than a topmost height of the first cup.

[0008] Various embodiments of the present disclosure can lower the height of the front sealing portion of the pouch by forming the shape of the pouch, such as a cup, asymmetrically. Accordingly, interference between the support bracket of the housing and the FPCB connected to the protection circuit module can be reduced, thereby freeing the pouch from constraints on the structure and / or shape of the support bracket and the FPCB. In addition, since the side sealing portion is folded downward so that the insulating tape and the adhesive tape are positioned on substantially the same surface (e.g., the bottom surface of the battery), the reduction in battery capacity due to the thickness of the insulating tape can be compensated for. In addition, since the remaining folded portion near the corner that occurs when folding the side of the existing sealing portion is eliminated, the design freedom of the protection circuit module (PCM) size can be improved.

[0009] The effects that can be achieved by the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure can be clearly derived and understood by those skilled in the art to which the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure pertain, from the following description. In other words, unintended effects resulting from the implementation of the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure can also be derived by those skilled in the art from the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure.

In one embodiment, the sealing portion (S) may extend along the periphery of the cups (311, 321) of the upper / lower pouches (310, 320) so as to surround (or cover) the cups. In one embodiment, the sealing portion (S) may have an overall “ㄷ” shape when the pouch (300) is viewed from above (e.g., in the +z-axis direction).

[0129] According to one embodiment, the front sealing portion (S1) may be an area where the lower pouch (310) and the upper pouch (320) come into contact with (or overlap) each other when folded, and may form the front portion of the pouch (300). In one embodiment, the front sealing portion (S1) may be formed by heat-sealing the front portion (312) of the lower pouch (310) and the rear portion (322) of the upper pouch (320) after they come into contact with (or overlap) each other.

[0130] According to one embodiment, the front sealing portion (S1) may be positioned at a height (h2) lower than the uppermost height (h1) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) as the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) is formed by asymmetric forming.

[0131] In this case, the installation height (or mounting height) of the protection circuit module (e.g., the protection circuit module (330) of FIG. 9) mounted on the front sealing portion (S1) can also be lowered.

[0132] For example, the height of the front sealing portion (S1) extended from the first cup (311) can be adjusted through asymmetrical shape forming of the pouch (300), for example, asymmetrical forming of the shape of the first cup (311), as described above, based on the size, arrangement and / or connection relationship of the protection circuit module (e.g., the protection circuit module (330) of FIG. 9).

[0133] According to one embodiment, the side sealing portion (S2) may be an area where the lower pouch (310) and the upper pouch (320) are folded and come into contact with each other, thereby forming a side portion of the pouch (300). In one embodiment, the side sealing portion (S2) may be formed by heat-sealing the side portion (313) of the lower pouch (310) and the side portion (323) of the upper pouch (320) after they come into contact with each other (or overlap).

[0134] According to one embodiment, the side sealing portion (S2) can be sequentially folded a predetermined number of times (e.g., twice) to face the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) and at least a portion of the front sealing portion (S1).

[0135] According to one embodiment, the side sealing portion (S2) may include a first side sealing portion (S2-1) facing both sides (3112) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) and a second side sealing portion (S2-2) facing the lower side of the front sealing portion (S1).

[0136] According to one embodiment, the first side sealing portion (S2-1) may correspond to a portion of the side sealing portion (S2) that is first folded downward (e.g., in the -z-axis direction) to face the two side surfaces (3112) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) (see FIGS. 12 and 13). In one embodiment, the first side sealing portion (S2-1) may have a shape corresponding to at least a portion of the two side surfaces (3112) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310). In this case, the first side sealing portion (S2-1) may be arranged to overlap the side surfaces (3112) of the first cup (311) when folded.

[0137] According to one embodiment, the second side sealing portion (S2-2) may correspond to a portion of the side sealing portion (S2) that is formed by a second fold downward (e.g., in the -z-axis direction) so as to face the lower surface of the front sealing portion (S1) after the first folding of the side sealing portion (S2) (see FIGS. 13 and 14).

[0138] Fig. 9 is a perspective view illustrating a state in which a protection circuit module is connected to a battery according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 10 is a front view illustrating a state in which a battery with a protection circuit module connected to it is installed in an electronic device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0139] Referring to FIGS. 9 and 10, a protection circuit module (330) according to one embodiment may further include a flexible printed circuit board (331) (FPCB, flexible printed circuit board) for electrically connecting an electrode assembly (not shown) of a battery (e.g., a battery (250) of FIG. 4) and a printed circuit board (240) of an electronic device (e.g., an electronic device (200) of FIG. 2).

[0140] According to one embodiment, the protection circuit module (330) may be arranged on the upper side (e.g., in the +z-axis direction) of the front sealing portion (S1) of the pouch (300). According to one embodiment, the flexible printed circuit board (331) may be bent on the upper side (e.g., in the +z-axis direction) of the front sealing portion (S1) of the pouch (300) and then extended toward the printed circuit board (240) (e.g., in the +x-axis direction). The flexible printed circuit board (331) may be arranged to face the second side sealing portion (S2-2) with respect to the front sealing portion (S1).

[0141] In this way, when the protection circuit module (330) is placed on the upper side of the front sealing portion (S1) of the pouch (300), a bending space and / or a fluid space of the flexible printed circuit board (331) can be secured on the upper side of the protection circuit module (330). In this case, interference between the flexible printed circuit board (331) and the support bracket (270) disappears, so that the problem of having to cut (or remove) a part of the support bracket (270) to secure a bending space of the flexible printed circuit board (331) does not occur, and the flexible printed circuit board (331) can be freely bent and / or fluidized within the width (or, space corresponding to the width) of the pouch (300) (specifically, within the width of the front sealing portion (S1)). The protection circuit module (330) can be placed adjacent to the bracket (270), thereby securing more length and reducing the width of the protection circuit module (330).

[0142] Referring to FIG. 10, a battery (250) according to one embodiment may be fixed to a battery slot (250s) provided in a support bracket (270) via an adhesive (P). The adhesive (P) may be attached to a bottom surface of the battery (250). According to one embodiment, the battery (250) may include an insulating member (IT) for insulating a cross-section or part of a side sealing portion (S2) cut during processing of the pouch (300) (see FIGS. 12a and 12b). The insulating member (IT) may be attached to a side surface and / or a bottom surface of the pouch (300) so as to surround an edge of the side sealing portion (S2).

[0143] In this case, since at least a part of the adhesive (P) disposed on the lower surface of the battery (250) to attach the battery (250) to the support bracket (270) and the insulating member (IT) surrounding the edge of the sealing portion (S) to insulate the battery (250) are positioned on the same plane (e.g., the lower surface of the battery (250)), the increase in the mounting space of the battery (250) in the electronic device (200) housing (specifically, the support bracket (270)) due to the thickness of the members can be reduced compared to a case where the members are separately attached to the upper and lower surfaces of the battery (250), respectively.

FIG. 12a and FIG. 12b are diagrams showing the states before and after cutting of a sealing portion according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 13 is a diagram showing a first folding state of a side sealing portion of a pouch according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 14a is a diagram showing a second folding state of a side sealing portion of a pouch according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 14b is an enlarged view of part A shown in FIG. 14a according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 15a is a perspective view of a conventional pouch according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 15b is a front view showing a state in which a protection circuit module is mounted on a pouch according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 16 is a perspective view of a pouch according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, and a front view showing a state in which a protection circuit module is mounted on the pouch.

[0145] Specifically, Fig. 12a is a drawing showing the appearance of the sealing portion (S') (including S1' and S2') of the pouch (300') before being cut, and Fig. 12b is a drawing showing the appearance of the sealing portion (S) of the pouch (300) after being cut. In addition, Fig. 14b is a drawing showing the pouch (300) viewed from below by enlarging part A of Fig. 14a. FIG. 15a is a perspective view showing the structure of a pouch (300") of a conventional battery (e.g., battery (250) of FIG. 4) according to a comparative example, and FIG. 15b is a front view showing a state in which a protection circuit module (330") is mounted in the pouch (300") shown in FIG. 15a. FIG. 16a is a perspective view showing the structure of a pouch (300) of a battery (250) according to the present disclosure, and FIG. 16b is a front view showing a state in which a protection circuit module (330) is mounted in the pouch (300) shown in FIG. 16 (a).

[0146] Hereinafter, a manufacturing process of a pouch (300) of a battery (e.g., battery (250) of FIG. 4) will be described with reference to FIGS. 11 to 16b.

[0147] Referring to FIGS. 11 to 16b, in one embodiment, the outer material of the pouch (300) may be formed using a forming device (not shown) to form an asymmetrically shaped lower pouch (e.g., the lower pouch (310) of FIG. 6) and an upper pouch (e.g., the upper pouch (320) of FIG. 6) (process 1110).

[0148] According to one embodiment, the sealing portion (S) of the pouch (300) can be formed by folding the lower pouch (310) and the upper pouch (320) along a folding line (e.g., folding line (F1-F1') of FIG. 6) to bring the lower pouch (310) and the upper pouch (320) into contact with each other, and then heat-welding the edges of the upper / lower pouches (310, 320) (process 1120).

[0149] According to one embodiment, the sealing length (hereinafter, width) (W') of the sealing portion (S') of the pouch (300') may be cut to a predetermined portion to fit a preset width (W) (process 1130). Here, the preset width (W) of the pouch (300) may be set in consideration of the size of the battery (250) and / or the size of the battery slot (250s) of the support member (272). For example, the width (W') of the sealing portion (S') of the pouch (300') may be cut to a predetermined width (W) such that, when the side sealing portion (S2) described below is folded, at least a portion (e.g., the first side sealing portion (S2-1)) of the side sealing portion (S2) faces at least a portion of the side surface (3112) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) (see FIGS. 12a and 12b).

[0150] According to one embodiment, in order to reduce the size of the pouch (300), the side sealing portion (S2) of the pouch (300) may be folded to one side a predetermined number of times (process 1140). In one embodiment, the side sealing portion (S2) of the pouch (300) may be folded downward (e.g., in the -z-axis direction) to face the side surface (3112) of the first cup (311) of the lower pouch (310) (see FIG. 13). Thereafter, the second side sealing portion (S2-2) of the side sealing portion (S2) is folded downward once more (e.g., in the -z-axis direction) along the folding line (F2-F2') to face the back surface of the front sealing portion (S1) (see FIG. 14).

[0151] In this case, in contrast to the case where a residual folded portion (S3) (e.g., a dog ear portion) is generated at the corner of the pouch (300") when the side sealing portion (S2") is folded in the pouch (300") structure of a general battery as illustrated in FIG. 15a, and the residual folded portion (S3) is positioned on the inside of the front sealing portion (S1"), since the pouch (300) is formed into an asymmetrical shape, the residual folded portion (S3) of the pouch (300") as illustrated in FIG. 15a can be omitted (see FIG. 16a), thereby providing additional freedom in the size (e.g., width) of the protection circuit module (330) mounted on the front sealing portion (S1). For example, the width (L) of the protection circuit module (330) illustrated in FIG. 16b can be designed to be larger than the width (L') of the protection circuit module (330") illustrated in FIG. 15b.

[0152] According to one embodiment, at the edge of the sealing portion (S), the edge of the side sealing portion (S2) may be wrapped by an insulating member (e.g., the insulating member (IT) of FIG. 10) to insulate the battery (250) (process 1150).
