Abstract
Description
[0001] A PRESSURE SEAL DEVICE FOR A CYLINDRICAL TOOL HOUSING AND METHOD THEREOF
[0002] FIELD OF INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a pressure sealing arrangement. More particularly, a pressure seal device and a method for providing an optimum pressure sealing arrangement in a cylindrical tool housing.
[0004] BACKGROUND
[0005] In the oil exploration field, assessing geological formations and optimizing resource extraction relies heavily on acquiring borehole data from wells drilled by drilling rigs. Various technologies play a crucial role in gathering this data, with acoustic technology being one of the widely used methods. Acoustic tools and sensors play a key role in transmitting and receiving sound waves, facilitating the analysis of subsurface rock formations and fluid properties.
[0006] To ensure accurate and reliable data acquisition, acoustic sensors need effective acoustic coupling with the borehole environment. In the borehole itself, this is usually achieved through the hydrostatic pressure of the fluid column. However, challenges arise when testing or calibrating acoustic tools on the surface, as the ambient pressure is typically around 1 atm or 14.4 psi, which is insufficient for achieving the required acoustic coupling.
[0007] To address the need for reliable testing and calibration of acoustic tools on the surface, researchers have utilized different test apparatus. These setups enable the application of higher pressures, typically around 500 psi, to simulate downhole conditions and enhance acoustic coupling. However, a critical aspect of these testing arrangements is the establishment of a robust pressure sealing mechanism that can prevent leakage and maintain the desired pressure levels during testing.
[0008] Conventionally, the researchers have employed two methods to address this challenge.
[0009] O-ring Seal Method: In this method, researchers disassemble the acoustic tool and install a sealing adaptor with high-pressure electrical connections. Afterward, they reassemble the tool before conducting testing or calibration. However, this approach consumes significant time and labor, and it introduces the risk of errors during the disassembly and reassembly process. Moreover, it may prove impractical for frequent testing or when rapid turnaround times are necessary.
[0010] Test Well Method: Another approach involves placing the acoustic tool in a dedicated test well at a suitable depth, typically around 600 meters. This depth ensures that the hydrostatic pressure of the water column in the well reaches the desired pressure level, approximately 500 psi. However, adopting this method can incur significant costs and consume considerable time. Additionally, it may not be readily available at all field locations and could be subject to local regulations and logistical challenges.
[0011] Therefore, there is a need for a device and method to address the challenges associated with testing acoustic downhole logging tools on the surface, specifically the need for a minimum pressure of 500 psi to achieve adequate acoustic coupling to the transducer.

[0032] Figure 1A illustrates an isometric view of a pressure seal device (100) for a cylindrical tool housing, according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0033] Figure IB illustrates an exploded side view of a pressure seal device (100) for a cylindrical tool housing, according to an embodiment of the present invention.
[0034] Figure 1C illustrates a front view of a pressure seal device (100) for a cylindrical tool housing, according to an embodiment of the present invention
[0035] The pressure seal device (100) consists of several components, including an adaptor or seal adaptor body (102), a minimum of three O-Ring elastomers (104), at least one metal washer (106), and a packing nut (108). The adaptor (102) is strategically positioned around the cylindrical tool housing and clamps onto a pressure housing pipe (not depicted in the figure). Additionally, the at least three O-Ring elastomers (104) are placed around the cylindrical tool housing and are designed to extrude, thereby providing a pressure seal around it.
[0036] To ensure a secure seal, the at least one metal washer is placed over the O-Ring elastomers (104) encircling the cylindrical tool housing, exerting a compression force. This metal washer (106) acts as a safeguard, preventing the O-Ring elastomers (104) from tearing due to the rotational pressure exerted by the packing nut (108) during compression. The packing nut (108) itself is equipped with internal acme threading, allowing it to engage with the cylindrical tool housing. When the packing nut (108) is turned clockwise, it applies compression force on the metal washer (106).
[0037] In a specific embodiment, the packing nut (108) is tapered, which aids in guiding the O-ring elastomers (104). When the packing nut (108) is tightened, it applies extrusion force, effectively forming a pressure seal around the cylindrical tool housing. The pressure seal is achieved by compressing the at least three O-Ring elastomers (104) in the axial direction, leading them to expand radially, thus creating a reliable seal. The metal washer (106) is meticulously designed to exert uniform compressive force on the three O-Ring elastomers (104), ensuring a consistent and optimal pressure seal, thereby guaranteeing the effectiveness and security of the seal.
[0038] The pressure seal device (100) is designed to offer a reliable pressure seal to either an unpolished surface of the cylindrical tool housing or a sealing surface, providing flexibility in its application. This arrangement enables a quick and reliable sealing solution that eliminates the need for disassembly, making it highly efficient and convenient for acoustic tools' testing and calibration. Moreover, its cost-effectiveness, easy deployability, and compatibility with existing laboratory and workshop equipment make it an ideal choice for various operating locations, enabling precise acoustic data acquisition during testing and calibration processes.
[0039] In one embodiment, the metal washer (106) includes a steel washer (106). In one embodiment, the cylindrical tool housing is an acoustic tool deployed in an oil industry.
[0040] Additionally, the pressure seal device is firmly connected to a steel spacer tube (110), which serves to adjust the spacing of a locking ring (112). To ensure a secure fit, one or more steel screws (114) are supplied to fasten the locking ring onto the cylindrical tool housing (114). In a specific embodiment, the steel screws (114) used are MIO steel screws.
[0041] In one embodiment, the pressure seal device is adaptable to accommodate various types of tools with different outer diameter dimensions. Another embodiment involves incorporating multiple pressure seal devices, which enhances reliability through the provision of redundant backup.
[0042] Figure 2 illustrates a method for providing a optimum pressure sealing arrangement in a cylindrical tool housing, according to an embodiment of the present invention. At step 202, an adaptor, at least one metal washer, at least three O-ring elastomers, and a packing nut are provided. At step 204, the at least three O-ring elastomers are positioned around the cylindrical tool housing. The cylindrical tool housing has either an unpolished surface or sealing surface. At step 206, at least one metal washer is positioned around the cylindrical tool housing. At step 208, the packing nut is tightened / fastened to exert pressure on the metal washer, causing the metal washer to compress the three O-ring elastomers. At step 210, the three O-ring elastomers are allowed to extrude and provide an optimum pressure seal around the cylindrical tool housing. Thereby, the at least three O-Ring Elastomers are squeezed in axial direction, and extrude in Radial direction to provide the Pressure Seal around the cylindrical tool housing.
[0043] The present invention addresses the challenges associated with testing acoustic downhole logging tools on the surface, specifically the need for a minimum pressure of 500 psi to achieve adequate acoustic coupling to the transducer (transmitter or receiver). As part of a specific embodiment, the pressure seal device has undergone testing and has been proven to withstand test pressures of up to 1000 psi, even though its typical working pressure is generally set at 500 psi. It provides a novel and efficient solution that overcomes the limitations of existing methods, such as the need for a dedicated test well or the time-consuming disassembly and reassembly of the tool.
[0044] The foregoing description describes embodiments of the present invention. It should be appreciated that these embodiments are described for the purpose of illustration only, and that numerous alterations and modifications may be practiced by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is intended that all such modifications and alterations be included in so far as they come within the scope of the invention as claimed or the equivalents thereof.
