Fitted bed covering

Abstract

The invention provides a bed covering, comprising at least one elastic strap. Each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering and configured to be stretched around a corresponding mattress corner having side faces and an underside, wherein each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress, the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner and a face of the elastic strap contacts the underside of the corresponding mattress corner and at least a part of each side face of the corresponding mattress corner. Also provided is a silicone layer on the strap, and a strap adjuster for adjusting the strap. Further provided is a top sheet with a fitted bottom end secured by an elastic strap.

Description

FITTED BED COVERINGFIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to bed coverings , including but not limited to bedsheets , mattress protectors , electric blankets , toppers and comforters .BACKGROUND

[0002] Fitted bed sheets have side faces which fit around the mattress and are secured underneath often with an elasticated edge . They provide a convenient means of making a smoothly fitting sleeping surface which does not tend to bunch up . Nevertheless , there can be a significant issue where the fitted sheet may not hold securely and slips out of alignment with the edge of the mattress . Also , varying mattress thicknesses and the increasing use of adjustable bases present a challenge when designing a fitted sheet that can fit securely for all the available configurations . Further , fitted top sheets present a number of design challenges in addition to those of fitted bottom sheets .

[0003] There is therefore a need to provide improved fitted bed coverings .SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0004] In accordance with a first broad aspect of the invention there is provided a bed covering , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ;side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of the side portions being configured to secure under the mattress ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched around and under a corresponding mattress corner and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner ; wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts the underside of the corresponding mattress corner and at least a part of each side face of the corresponding mattress corner .

The bed top sheet may further comprise a pleat across a foot end part of the top portion to provide foot room.

[0033] In accordance with a fifth broad aspect of the invention there is provided a bed top sheet , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of leftand right ones of the side portions being loose to facilitate entry and exit to the bed under the top portion , a foot end one of the side portions being attached to the left and right side portions along left and right corners to provide a fitted foot end and sized to extend under a mattress bottom end; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched under the mattress bottom end or bottom corners and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the foot end one of the side portions under the mattress bottom end; and a pleat across a foot end part of the top portion to provide foot room. Each elastic strap may comprise a silicone layer facing the underside of the mattress .

[0034] In some embodiments of the fourth or fifth broad aspects each of the left and right ones of the side portions comprise a cut out near a foot end thereof and extending up towards the top portion to further facilitate entry and exit to and from the bed under the top portion .

Clips may be provided inside the pocket on left and right sides for securing the head end of the duvet inside the pocket . [0043] Referring first to Figure 1 and 2 , a bed covering 1 in the form of a fitted bottom sheet is shown on a mattress in top perspective view and bottom perspective view . Bed covering 1 is fitted on a mattress sitting on mattress base 2 . Bed covering 1 comprises top portion 3 , sized to fit a top surface of the mattress . Sewn into top portion 3 are corresponding side portions 4 each meeting a respective edge of the top portion 5 along an inner side portion edge 5 . Adjacent ones of the side portions 4 are sewed together at the corners along a seam 6 . Outer edges 9 of the side portions are gatherable (in this case elasticated) to secure past bottom mattress side edges 8 underthe mattress underside 10 and hold the bed covering in place . An elastic strap 7 is attached at the edges 5 of the top portion 3 and side portion 4 at ends 11 and 12 , adjacent the corner illustrated .

[0044] By contacting down at least part of each side of the mattress and across the corner of the mattress underside , strap 7 resists slipping in use and provides an improved stability of the bed covering on the bed . In this embodiment , the other 3 corners are similarly configured .

[0045] Further improved slipping resistance can be provided where least one of the elastic straps comprises a silicone layer facing at least the underside of the mattress corner , and preferably also facing the mattress sides . The weight of the mattress on the bed particularly causes the silicone layer to grip strongly to the mattress underside .

Referring now to Figure 3 , specially designed strap adjuster 20 comprises three vertical slots 21 , 22 and 23 provided with serrations 24 for gripping strap 7 . Referring now to Figure 4 , strap adjuster 20 is shown in use shortening the effective length of strap 7 .Strap adjuster 20 is installed on strap 7 by folding together an excess portion of strap 7 and passing the excess portion upwards through first slot 21 , downwards through second slot 22 and finally upwards through third slot 23 , loop 72 of the excess length extending out of slot 23.

[0047] Referring now to figures 5 and 6 , upper and lower perspective views respectively are shown of an embodiment of the fourth or fifth broad aspect of the invention . As seen in Figure 5 , a mattress has a top edge 100 shown in dotted line around 4edges for ease of understanding . Diagonal lines show the extent of the fitted top sheet of the embodiment . Top portion 101 is integral with left and right side portions (right side portion 107 shown) and with foot end side portion 109. Foot end side portion 109 is attached by a seam at the foot end corners to the left and right side portions (right seam 111 shown) and extending under the foot end of the mattress in the conventional fitted sheet manner . Top portion 101 is folded horizontally across a foot end part thereof to form a pleat 110 , which is secured by seams at left and right sides (seams 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 , 117 shown) . The pleat provides extra room for feet , overcoming a disadvantage of fitted top sheets which tend to restrict feet of tall sleepers at the foot end .

[0048] The left and right side portions (right side portion shown) are loose (not tucked under) on outer edges loose to facilitate entry and exit to the bed under the top portion , the loose outer edge extending down to cut out 108 extending up towards the top portion to further facilitate entry and exit to and from the bed under the top portion .

[0049] Top portion 101 also comprises a pocket 102 , 105 along a head end of the top portion also extending down the left and right side portions (shown on right side portion at 106) sized to fit a head end of a duvet . The left and right ones of the side portions are sized to correspond to a width of the duvet such that the outer edges of the left and right side portions do not extend lower than outer left and right edges of the duvet .

Edge 123 is elasticated to secure the foot end 109 tucked under the mattress . Elastic strap 120 aids in the securing of the foot end of the fitted sheet and comprises a silicone layer facing the mattress bottom which serves to immobilise the foot end of a fitted sheet under the weight of the mattress .

Claims

CLAIMS1 . A bed covering , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of the side portions being configured to secure under the mattress ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched around and under a corresponding mattress corner and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner ; wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts the underside of the corresponding mattress corner and at least a part of each side face of the corresponding mattress corner .2 . The bed covering of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a part of one side face and at least a greater part of the other side face .

The bed covering of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a greater part of one side face and atleast a greater part of the other side face .4 . The bed covering of claim 3 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is attached at either end to the bed covering at edges of the top portion adjacent the corresponding mattress corner .5 . The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 4 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps comprises a silicone layer facing at least the underside of the mattress corner .

The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 5 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is two in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding bottom corner of the mattress .7 . The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 5 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is four in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding corner of the mattress .8 . The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 7 , wherein the bed covering is a sheet , a mattress protector , a blanket , a topper , a comforter or an electric blanket .9 . The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 8 , wherein adjacent ones of the side portions are attached at the corners and the outer edges of the side portions are elasticised .10 . The bed covering of any one of claims 1 to 9 , further comprising a strap adjuster configured to enable shortening of an effective length of the strap .11 . The bed covering of claim 10 , wherein the strap adjustercomprises a first slot , a second slot alongside the first slot and a third slot alongside the second slot , and the strap adjuster is installed on the strap by folding together an excess portion of the strap and passing the excess portion upwards through the first slot , downwards through second slot and upwards through third slot , a loop of excess length extending out of the third slot .12 . A bed covering , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of the side portions being configured to secure under the mattress ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched around and under a corresponding mattress corner and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner ; wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap contacts at least a part of the underside of the corresponding mattress corner ; and each elastic strap comprises a silicone layer facing the underside of the mattress corner .

The bed covering of claim 12 , wherein each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts the underside of the corresponding mattress corner and at least a part of each side face of the corresponding mattress corner13. The bed covering of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a part of one side face and at least a greater part of the other side face .14 . The bed covering of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a greater part of one side face and at least a greater part of the other side face .15 . The bed covering of claim 14 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is attached at either end to the bed covering at edges of the top portion adjacent the corresponding mattress corner .

The bed covering of any one of claims 12 to 15 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is two in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding bottom corner of the mattress .17 . The bed covering of any one of claims 12 to 15 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is four in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding corner of the mattress .18 . The bed covering of any one of claims 12 to 17 , wherein the bed covering is a sheet , a mattress protector , a blanket , atopper , a comforter or an electric blanket .

19. The bed covering of any one of claims 12 to 18 , wherein adjacent ones of the side portions are attached at the corners and the outer edges of the side portions are elasticised .20 . The bed covering of any one of claims 12 to 19 , further comprising a strap adjuster configured to enable shortening of an effective length of the strap .21 . The bed covering of claim 20 , wherein the strap adjuster comprises a first slot , a second slot alongside the first slot and a third slot alongside the second slot , and the strap adjuster is installed on the strap by folding together an excess portion of the strap and passing the excess portion upwards through the first slot , downwards through second slot and upwards through third slot , a loop of excess length extending out of the third slot .22 . A bed covering , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of the side portions being configured to secure under the mattress ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched around and under a corresponding mattress corner and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner ; wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap contacts at least a part of the underside of the corresponding mattress corner ; andfurther comprising a strap adjuster configured to enable shortening of an effective length of the strap .

The bed covering of claim 22 , wherein the strap adjuster comprises a first slot , a second slot alongside the first slot and a third slot alongside the second slot , and the strap adjuster is installed on the strap by folding together an excess portion of the strap and passing the excess portion upwards through the first slot , downwards through second slot and upwards through third slot , a loop of excess length extending out of the third slot .24 . The bed covering of claim 22 or 23 , wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts the underside of the corresponding mattress corner and at least a part of each side face of the corresponding mattress corner .25 . The bed covering of claim 22 or 23 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a part of one side face and at least a greater part of the other side face .

26. The bed covering of claim 22 or 23 , wherein at least one of the elastic straps is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap is under the side portions adjacent the corresponding mattress corner , and a face of the elastic strap contacts an underside of the corresponding mattress corner , at least a greater part of one side face and atleast a greater part of the other side face .27 . The bed covering of claim 26 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is attached at either end to the bed covering at edges of the top portion adjacent the corresponding mattress corner .28 . The bed covering of any one of claims 22 to 27 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps comprises a silicone layer facing at least the underside of the mattress corner .

29. The bed covering of any one of claims 22 to 28 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is two in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding bottom corner of the mattress .30 . The bed covering of any one of claims 22 to 29 , wherein the at least one of the elastic straps is four in number , each configured to be stretched around a corresponding corner of the mattress .31 . The bed covering of any one of claims 22 to 30 , wherein the bed covering is a sheet , a mattress protector , a blanket , a topper , a comforter or an electric blanket .32 . The bed covering of any one of claims 22 to 31 , wherein adjacent ones of the side portions are attached at the corners and the outer edges of the side portions are elasticised .

33. A bed top sheet , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of leftand right ones of the side portions being loose to facilitate entry and exit to the bed under the top portion , a foot end one of the side portions being attached to the left and right side portions along left and right corners to provide a fitted foot end and sized to extend under a mattress bottom end ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched under the mattress bottom end or bottom corners and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the foot end one of the side portions under the mattress bottom end; wherein : each elastic strap is attached to the bed covering such that when fitted to the mattress , the elastic strap contacts at least a part of the underside of the mattress ; and each elastic strap comprises a silicone layer facing the underside of the mattress .34 . The bed top sheet of claim 33 , further comprising a pleat across a foot end part of the top portion to provide foot room.35 . A bed top sheet , comprising a top portion sized to fit onto a top of a mattress , the mattress having side faces and an underside ; side portions each meeting a respective edge of the top portion along an inner side portion edge , outer edges of left and right ones of the side portions being loose to facilitate entry and exit to the bed under the top portion , a foot end one of the side portions being attached to the left and right side portions along left and right corners to provide a fitted foot end and sized to extend under a mattress bottom end ; and at least one elastic strap configured to be stretched under the mattress bottom end or bottom corners and attached to the bed covering so as to secure the foot end one of the side portions under the mattress bottom end; and a pleat across a foot end part of the top portion to providefoot room.

36. The bed top sheet of claim 35 , wherein each elastic strap comprises a silicone layer facing the underside of the mattress .37 . The bed top sheet of any one of claims 33 to 36 , wherein each of the left and right ones of the side portions comprise a cut out near a foot end thereof and extending up towards the top portion to further facilitate entry and exit to and from the bed under the top portion .38 . The bed top sheet of any one of claims 33 to 37 , further comprising a pocket along a head end of the top portion extending down the left and right side portions sized to fit a head end of a duvet .

39. The bed top sheet of claim 38 , further comprising clips inside the pocket on left and right sides for securing the head end of the duvet inside the pocket .40 . The bed top sheet of claim 38 or 39 , wherein the left and right ones of the side portions are sized to correspond to a width of the duvet such that the outer edges of the left and right side portions do not extend lower than outer left and right edges of the duvet .
