[0160] It should be noted in the following description that like or the same reference numerals in different embodiments denote the same or similar features.Dispensing bottle
[0161] In a first aspect a dispensing bottle is denoted by the reference numeral 1000.
[0162] Now described with reference to figures 1 to 4, there is provided a dispensing bottle 1000. The dispensing bottle 1000 comprises a preferably cylindrical dispensing container 1100, and outlet closure 1200 and an inlet closure 1300.
[0163] The dispensing container 1100 is preferably cylindrical and includes and / or defines an internal chamber 1110 for containing viscous contents (not shown), such as sauces. Dispensing container 1100 defines a cylindrical sidewall 1130, as well as an upper end 1102 and a lower end 1104. The dispensing container 1100 further includes and / or defines a dispensing outlet 1120 from which the contents can be dispensed, and a filling inlet 1150 through which the contents of the dispensing container 1100 may be refilled.
[0164] The dispensing outlet 1120 is preferably disposed on the lower end 1104 of the cylindrical dispensing container 1100. The dispensing outlet 1120 preferably extends through a projection 1123 that projects from base walls 1145. The projection 1123 includes a neck formation 1124 and a head formation 1126. The neck formation 1124 includes friction fit formations in the form of ridges 1128 that are spaced regularly around the circumference of the neck formation. The ridges 1128 are configured for preferably providing a interference fit with an inner diameter of annular ring 1210. The head formation 1126 is preferably dimensioned to allow for annular ring 1210 to be press fitted over the head formation 1126 and onto the neck formation 1124. The dispensing container 1100 is preferably compression moulded, preferably as a single piece. The dispensing container 1100 is preferably composed of silicone, although alternative forms of plastics and mouldable material are envisaged.
[0165] In use, force may be applied by a user to the sidewall 1130 at a force application zone 1140 to thereby deform the sidewall 1130 and dispense the contents of the dispensing container 1100 from the dispensing outlet 1120.
[0166] The dispensing outlet 1120 is restricted by a leak restricting formation 1160 to prevent leakage of the contents from the dispensing bottle 1000 unless force is being applied to the force application zone.
[0167] Lower base walls 1145 extend transversely inwardly from the cylindrical sidewall 1130 to the dispensing outlet 1120. The lower base walls 1145 together with the leak restricting formation 1160 close the lower end of the dispensing container 1100. Thedispensing outlet 1120 will preferably be circular. The dispensing container 1100 will preferably also be circular in cross-section. The diameter of the dispensing outlet 1120 will preferably be between 0.1 and 0.4 times the diameter of the dispensing container, and more preferably between 0.1 and 0.2 times the diameter of the dispensing container. The leak restricting formation 1160 is preferably securely mounted within the dispensing outlet 1120, and preferably permanently mounted so that it cannot easily be removed. Preferably the leak restricting formation 1160 will be press fitted into the dispensing outlet 1120. It is also envisaged that the leak restricting formation 1160 could be integral in moulded with the dispensing container 1100.
[0168] The lower base walls 1145 together with the leak restricting formation 1160 prevent leakage of the contents from the dispensing container 1100 downwardly in use unless a force is being applied to the dispensing container 1100 to creative pressure inside the internal chamber 1110.
[0169] In the embodiment shown in figure 3, the thickness of the sidewall 1130 tapers from being thicker at the lower end 1104 towards a thinner sidewall at the upper end, so effectively the upper end 1102 becomes the force application zone 1140.
[0170] An alternative embodiment of a dispensing bottle is shown in figure 7, where the sidewall 1130 is moulded to be thinner towards the middle portion of the cylindrical dispensing container. In this embodiment, the force application zone 1140 is located at a central portion of the cylindrical dispensing container 1100.
[0171] In the embodiment shown in figure 7, the sidewall 1130 decreases in thickness from an inner face of the cylindrical dispensing container 1100, although in alternative embodiments (not shown), it is envisaged that the sidewall could decrease in thickness from an outer face of the cylindrical dispensing container 1100.
[0172] The sidewall 1130 varies in wall thickness between a thinner wall thickness (shown by arrow d in figure 3 and 7) at a force application zone 1140 to a thicker wall thickness (shown by arrow D1 in figures 3 and 7) at least adjacent the dispensing outlet 1120.
[0173] As shown in figure 7, the wall thickness of the cylindrical sidewall 1130 preferably increases to a thicker wall thickness (shown by arrow D2 in figure 7) adjacent the filling inlet 1150. In figure 7 the force application zone 1140 is disposed in a central ring around the circumference of the cylindrical dispensing container 1100.
[0174] In alternative embodiments (not shown) it is envisaged that the force application zone 1140 will be disposed as one, two or more separate areas to which force may be applied. In further alternative embodiments (not shown) it is envisaged that the forceapplication zone may be of any shape and disposed anywhere on the dispensing container. It is further envisaged that in further alternative embodiments (not shown), the dispensing container need not necessarily be circular in cross-section and can be of any shape in cross-section, including regular, square, ellipsoid, or any other shape.
[0175] The outlet closure 1200 is configured for preferably sealing the dispensing outlet in use to prevent leakage of the contents. The outlet closure 1200 includes an annular ring 1210 and a cap 1220. The annular ring 1210 is preferably composed from a magnetically attractive material, such as a ferrous material. The cap 1220 preferably includes magnets 1222 that are magnetically attracted to the annular ring 1210. The cap 1220 is reconfigurable relative to the dispensing container 1100 and the annular ring 1210 between a closed condition (shown in figure 3) in which the cap covers the dispensing outlet 1120, and an open condition (shown in figure 5) in which the contents of the internal chamber 1110 are dispensable through the dispensing outlet 1120.
[0176] The annular ring 1210 includes a circular aperture 1212 therethrough and is configured for connection to the dispensing container 1110 at the lower end 1104, by means of an outlet connecting arrangement 1400. The outlet connecting arrangement 1400 is in the form of a snap fit-type formation and includes a circular ridge 1410 that is adapted for being received through the circular aperture 1212 of the annular ring 1210 in a preferably interference fit. The outlet connecting arrangement 1400 further includes a channel 1420 into which the annular ring 1210 can be seated.
[0177] In alternative embodiments, it is envisaged that alternative outlet connecting arrangements could be used, including: a. a snap fit-type connecting arrangement; b. a bayonet-type connecting arrangement; c. a threaded connecting arrangement; d. friction fit connecting formation; e. adhesive bonding; and f. any other suitable connecting formation.
[0178] It is further envisaged that the cap 1220 could be directly engageable with the dispensing container 1100 by an outlet connecting arrangement including any one or more selected from: a. a snap fit-type connecting arrangement; b. a bayonet-type connecting arrangement; c. a threaded connecting arrangement; d. friction fit connecting formation;e. any other suitable connecting formation.
[0179] The leak restricting formation 1160 preferably includes a planar valve body or gland 1162 with a pair of crossed slits 1164 in it. As mentioned previously, the leak restricting formation 1160 may be press fitted onto the dispensing container 1100, or alternatively may be integrally formed with the dispensing container 1100.
[0180] In the embodiments shown in figures 10 and 11 , a commercially available leak restricting formation 1190 is provided, together with a sealing washer 1180. The leak restricting formation 1160 includes a rigid outer annular formation 1191 and a valve body 1193. The valve body 1193 includes a planar valve formation or gland 1194 with crossed slits in it (not shown). The valve body 1193 further includes a gland annular wall 1195 that extends substantially vertically in use, and a reinforcing annular formation 1196 that is configured for reinforcing the strength of the periphery of the valve body 1193. The cross-sectional shape of the reinforcing annular formation 1196 is substantially triangular in section. The rigid outer annular formation 1191 comprises an outer annular wall 1198 and an inner annular wall 1199 that are concentric and offset from each other, being of different diameters. The inner annular wall 1199 and the outer annular wall 1198 are connected by a horizontal wall 1197. In use, the reinforcing annular formation 1196 is located inside the outer annular wall 1198 and on top of the horizontal wall 1197, as shown in figure 11 . The leak restricting formation 1190, together with the sealing washer 1180, will be located within annular recess 1122 in the dispensing outlet 1120. The sealing washer 1180 is used to create an interference fit between the annular recess 1122 and the leak restricting formation 1190 to thereby cause the leak restricting formation 1190 to seal against the inner walls of annular formation to prevent leakage of the contents around the side of the leak restricting formation 1190.
[0181] An improved valve or leak restricting formation 1160 is shown in figures 8, 9 and 15. In this embodiment, the valve or leak restricting formation 1160 includes a valve body 1161 and a rigid outer annular formation 1191 similar to that described with reference to figures 10 and 11.
[0182] The valve body 1161 includes a planar valve formation or gland 1162 and an annular support formation 1166 configured for supporting the planar valve body 1162.
[0183] The planar valve body 1162 includes one or more slits (not shown) in it for dispensing the contents therethrough. The annular support formation 1166 includes a valve annular wall 1167 and a U-shaped formation 1168. The valve annular wall 1167 extends between the planar valve body 1162 and the U-shaped formation 1168.
[0184] The U-shaped formation 1168 is generally annularly shaped as an annular ring. The U-shaped formation 1168 is U-shaped in cross-section. Preferably, the ends of the U-shape face downwardly in use.
[0185] In use, the U-shaped formation 1168 is configured for engaging over the top of the outer annular wall 1198 and to either side of the outer annular wall, while also being located in abutment with the horizontal wall 1197, to thereby locate the valve body 1161 relative to the rigid outer annular formation 1191. Preferably the U-shaped formation 1168 is configured for sealing against the outer annular wall 1198 in use.
[0186] The valve or leak restricting formation 1160 will preferably be located within an annular recess 1122 in the dispensing outlet of the dispensing container 1100. It is further envisaged that the combined distance between the lower face of the horizontal wall 1197 and the top of the U-shaped formation 1168 will be slightly more than the width of the annular recess 1122, to thereby create an interference fit. This is preferably enabled by the soft silicone material that the dispensing container will be moulded from. In this way, leakage around the edge of the valve 1160 is prevented.
[0187] When the cap 1220 is drawn to and engaged with the annular ring 1210 by the magnets 1222, the cap 1220 will effectively seal the dispensing outlet 1120 to thereby prevent leakage of the contents from the dispensing bottle 1000, and preferably prevent ingress of air into the dispensing container 1100. The cap will also facilitate the balancing of the dispensing bottle 1000 on a flat surface.
[0188] The cap 1220 is preferably composed of a circular first member 1224 that is configured for holding magnets 1222, and a circular second member 1226. The circular first member 1224 and the circular second member 1226 are adapted and dimensioned to be press fitted to each other by a friction fit.
[0189] In an alternative embodiment (not shown) alternative fits such as snap fit -type arrangements, bayonet type arrangements, or adhesive bonding may be used to connect the circular first member 1224 and the circular second member 1226 to each other.
[0190] In the embodiments shown in figures 13 and 14, the circular first member 1224 defines an inner annular wall formation 1230 and an outer annular wall formation 1240. There inner annular wall formation 1230 and the outer annular wall formation 1240 are disposed to be concentric with the valve body 1161 when the 1220 is in its closed condition.
[0191] The outer annular wall formation 1240 is configured for extending between the valve annular wall 1167 and the rigid inner annular wall 1199 annular wall of the rigid outer annular formation 1191 when the 1220 is in a closed condition. In this way, possibleleakage from the valve body 1161 is further prevented. In addition, the inner annular wall formation 1230 is configured to lightly abut with the planar valve formation 1162 when the 1220 is in its closed condition. It is anticipated that this will assist in preventing the deformation of the planar valve formation 1162 from the weight of the contents to further reduce leakage.
[0192] The outlet closure 1200 are will be configured for supporting the dispensing bottle 1000 in an upright position on a flat surface such as a table. In alternative embodiments (not shown) it is envisage that the base walls 1145 can be similarly configured for supporting the dispensing bottle in an upright position, and further alternative embodiments, it is envisaged that the base walls and the outlet closure together can be configured for supporting the dispensing bottle in an upright position.
[0193] The dispensing bottle 1000 further includes an inlet closure 1300 for closing the filling inlet 1150. The inlet closure preferably includes one or more removable and replaceable name plates 1310 (shown in figure 2). The inlet closure 1300 is preferably connectable to the dispensing container 1100 by an inlet connecting arrangement 1500. The inlet closure is reconfigurable between an open condition in which contents for dispensing can be inserted into the dispensing container, and a closed condition in which the filling inlet is restricted. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the inlet connecting arrangement is a threaded formation 1510 preferably moulded into the inlet closure 1300 that is engageable with a complementary threaded formation 1520 that is preferably moulded onto the dispensing bottle 1000. However, in alternative embodiments (not shown), it is envisaged that the inlet connecting arrangement 1500 could be of a wide variety of different configurations, including any one or more selected from: a. a snap fit type connecting arrangement; b. a bayonet type connecting arrangement; c. a threaded connecting arrangement; d. a magnetic connecting arrangement; e. friction fit connecting formation; and f. any other suitable connecting formation.Manufacture
[0194] Now with reference to figure 6, a method of manufacture of a dispensing bottle is described.
[0195] The method of manufacture initially comprises compression moulding 2 a preferably silicon dispensing container as a single piece. The dispensing container includes an internal chamber 1110 for containing contents, a dispensing outlet 1120, anda filling inlet 1150 as described above. The dispensing container includes at least one cylindrical sidewall 1130 to which a force can be applied in use at a force application zone 1140 to deform the sidewall 1130 and dispense the contents of the dispensing container from the dispensing outlet 1120. The sidewall 1130 of the dispensing container varies 1100 in wall thickness between a thinner wall thickness at the force application zone, to a thicker wall thickness adjacent the dispensing outlet 1120 and filling inlet 1150. The dispensing container 1100 preferably be moulded 2 with integrally formed thread formations 1520 proximate the filling inlet 1150 at the upper end 1102, and with the ridge 1410 and channel 1420 proximate the dispensing outlet 1120 at the lower end 1104.
[0196] It is envisaged that a leak restricting formation 1160 will then be provided and press fitted 4 into the dispensing outlet 1120. In an alternative embodiment, is envisaged that the leak restricting formation 1160 may be integrally moulded with the dispensing container 1100.
[0197] An inlet closure will then be moulded 6. It is envisaged that the inlet closure will preferably be moulded from the same material as the dispensing container. It is further envisaged that the inlet closure will be moulded with thread formations 1510 that are complementary to the thread formations 1521 the dispensing container 1100.
[0198] As a next step, the circular first member 1224 will be moulded 8. Preferably, the circular first member will be moulded from a food grade plastic. At this stage, magnets will be connected 10 to the circular first member 1224. The magnets will preferably be dimensioned to be press fitted into recesses in the circular first member 1224.
[0199] As a next step, the circular second member 1226 will be moulded 12. The circular second member 1226 will then be connected 14 to the circular first member, preferably by a friction press fit, to form the cap 1220.
[0200] The annular ring 1210 will then be provided 16. The annular ring 1210 will preferably be cut, machined, fabricated or stamped from a metal sheet. The annular ring 1210 may be painted or coated.
[0201] The annular ring 1210 will be fitted 18 over the ridge 1410 on the dispensing container 1100 and seated in channel 1420.
[0202] After this, the cap 1220 will then be engaged 20 magnetically with annular ring 1210 to form the dispensing bottle 1000.In use
[0203] It is envisaged that the dispensing bottle 1000 will be used as described below with reference to the figures.
[0204] Initially, the inlet closure 1300 will be removed by unscrewing the complementary threaded formations 1520 from the threaded formations 1510. Viscous contents such a sauce may then poured into the filling inlet 1150. The inlet closure 1300 will then be screwed back on to close the filling inlet 1150.
[0205] In order to dispense the contents from the dispensing bottle, the cap 1220 will be magnetically disengaged from the annular ring 1210. The dispensing container 1100 will be held with the lower end 1104 extending downwardly, and force applied by a user to the force application zone 1140, causing the dispensing container 1100 to deform inwardly, causing pressure within the internal chamber 1110. The pressure within the internal chamber 1110 will cause the contents to be pushed out of the dispensing outlet 1120.Interpretation
[0206] Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. It will be further understood that terms used herein should be interpreted as having a meaning that is consistent with their meaning in the context of this specification and the relevant art and will not be interpreted in an idealized or overly formal sense unless expressly so defined herein. For the purposes of the present invention, additional terms are defined below. Furthermore, all definitions, as defined and used herein, should be understood to control over dictionary definitions, definitions in documents incorporated by reference, and / or ordinary meanings of the defined terms unless there is doubt as to the meaning of a particular term, in which case the common dictionary definition and / or common usage of the term will prevail.
[0207] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of the invention. As used herein, the singular articles “a”, “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise and thus are used herein to refer to one or to more than one (i.e. to “at least one”) of the grammatical object of the article. By way of example, the phrase “an element” refers to one element or more than one element.
[0208] The term “about” is used herein to refer to quantities that vary by as much as 30%, preferably by as much as 20%, and more preferably by as much as 10% to a reference quantity. The use of the word ‘about’ to qualify a number is merely an express indication that the number is not to be construed as a precise value.
[0209] Throughout this specification, unless the context requires otherwise, the words “comprise”, “comprises” and “comprising” will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated step or element or group of steps or elements but not the exclusion of any other step or element or group of steps or elements.
[0210] The term “real-time” for example “displaying real-time data,” refers to the display of the data without intentional delay, given the processing limitations of the system and the time required to accurately measure the data.
[0211] As used herein, the term “exemplary” is used in the sense of providing examples, as opposed to indicating quality. That is, an “exemplary embodiment” is an embodiment provided as an example, as opposed to necessarily being an embodiment of exemplary quality for example serving as a desirable model or representing the best of its kind.
[0212] The phrase “and / or,” as used herein in the specification and in the claims, should be understood to mean “either or both” of the elements so conjoined, i.e., elements that are conjunctively present in some cases and disjunctively present in other cases. Multiple elements listed with “and / or” should be construed in the same fashion, i.e., “one or more” of the elements so conjoined. Other elements may optionally be present other than the elements specifically identified by the “and / or” clause, whether related or unrelated to those elements specifically identified. Thus, as a non-limiting example, a reference to “A and / or B”, when used in conjunction with open-ended language such as “comprising” can refer, in one embodiment, to A only (optionally including elements other than B); in another embodiment, to B only (optionally including elements other than A); in yet another embodiment, to both A and B (optionally including other elements); etc.
[0213] As used herein in the specification and in the claims, “or” should be understood to have the same meaning as “and / or” as defined above. For example, when separating items in a list, “or” or “and / or” shall be interpreted as being inclusive, i.e., the inclusion of at least one, but also including more than one, of a number or list of elements, and, optionally, additional unlisted items. Only terms clearly indicated to the contrary, such as “only one of” or “exactly one of,” or, when used in the claims, “consisting of’ will refer to the inclusion of exactly one element of a number or list of elements. In general, the term “or” as used herein shall only be interpreted as indicating exclusive alternatives (i.e. “one or the other but not both”) when preceded by terms of exclusivity, such as “either,” “one of,” “only one of,” or “exactly one of.” “Consisting essentially of,” when used in the claims, shall have its ordinary meaning as used in the field of patent law.
[0214] As used herein in the specification and in the claims, the phrase “at least one,” in reference to a list of one or more elements, should be understood to mean at least oneelement selected from any one or more of the elements in the list of elements, but not necessarily including at least one of each and every element specifically listed within the list of elements and not excluding any combinations of elements in the list of elements. This definition also allows that elements may optionally be present other than the elements specifically identified within the list of elements to which the phrase “at least one” refers, whether related or unrelated to those elements specifically identified. Thus, as a non-limiting example, “at least one of A and B” (or, equivalently, “at least one of A or B,” or, equivalently “at least one of A and / or B”) can refer, in one embodiment, to at least one, optionally including more than one, A, with no B present (and optionally including elements other than B); in another embodiment, to at least one, optionally including more than one, B, with no A present (and optionally including elements other than A); in yet another embodiment, to at least one, optionally including more than one, A, and at least one, optionally including more than one, B (and optionally including other elements); etc.Embodiments:
[0215] Reference throughout this specification to “one embodiment” or “an embodiment” means that a particular feature, structure or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present invention. Thus, appearances of the phrases “in one embodiment” or “in an embodiment” in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment, but may. Furthermore, the particular features, structures or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner, as would be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art from this disclosure, in one or more embodiments.
