Abstract
Description
[0001] PACKAGING SYSTEM FOR PALLETS AND METHODS OF WRAPPING AND UN-WRAPPING A LOAD
[0002] Field of the invention
[0003] The present disclosure relates to the field of pallets for transporting, shipping, and storage of goods, and more particularly to an integrated, reusable packaging system for use with such pallets and a method of using said packaging system for packaging / un- packaging a load.
[0004] Background of the invention
[0005] A pallet is a widely used platform for stacking, transporting, and storing goods and materials. Traditionally, pallets have been constructed from wood, metal, press-wood, plastic, or aluminum. The standard design features a flat, elevated top surface that supports the load, with a gap underneath for forklift insertion. These pallets are essential for facilitating the movement of goods using forklifts or other material handling equipment.
[0006] Conventional wooden pallets have been a popular choice for their structural integrity and affordability. However, they come with various challenges. The cost of manufacturing and repairing wooden pallets has been on the rise, impacting the overall cost-effectiveness of palletized shipments. Additionally, wooden pallets are heavy, bulky, and require substantial storage space. Transporting empty wooden pallets, especially for reuse, can be costly, affecting the overall efficiency of logistics operations.
[0007] Alternative pallet designs have been developed to address some of these issues. Pallets made from materials such as plastic and metal offer durability and are often designed for specific uses or industries. Some designs allow for nesting, collapsing, or four-way forklift access to enhance storage and handling efficiency.
[0008] In conjunction with pallets, various packaging methods have been employed to secure and protect the load during transport. Wrapping, also known as stretch wrapping, is commonly used to tightly encase the load with plastic film, preventing shifting and ensuring stability. This method is widely utilized for palletized shipments to minimize the risk of damage or loss during transit.
[0009] Despite the benefits of stretch wrapping, there are still challenges associated with this approach. Wrapping is typically an external process, separate from the pallet itself. This means that the wrapping material is handled separately, leading to additional steps in the loading and unloading process. Furthermore, the use of plastic wrapping materials can contribute to waste production, especially when a large quantity of items is transported, as the wrapping material may be discarded at the destination. This waste contributes to environmental pollution, increased production costs, and inefficiencies in the supply chain. A sustainable and efficient solution is essential to address these challenges.
[0010] The need for a more integrated and efficient solution for pallets and packaging has driven the development of new approaches in the logistics industry. The present invention aims to address these challenges by providing a pallet with integrated packaging, a novel concept that combines the benefits of a standard pallet with the efficiency and convenience of built-in wrapping or securing mechanisms. By incorporating packaging elements directly into the pallet design, this invention seeks to streamline the logistics process, minimize waste, and optimize load handling, benefiting both the environment and operational efficiency.
[0011] The subject matter claimed herein is not limited to embodiments that solve any disadvantages or that operate only in environments such as those described herein. Rather, this background is only provided to illustrate an example technology area where some implementations described herein may be practiced.
[0012] Summary of the invention
[0013] On this background, it is an object of the present invention to provide a comprehensive and integrated solution that addresses the challenges of waste generation in the logistics industry, specifically focusing on the direct integration of a packaging system within the pallet structure.
[0014] According to a first aspect of the invention, the objects laid out in the background section may be achieved by a packaging system 1 for securing a load 6 on a pallet 2, said system comprising:
[0015] - the pallet 2 comprising:
[0016] • a base element 20
[0017] • an upper side 21 for receiving the load,
[0018] • a bottom side 22, opposite to the upper side 21 ,
[0019] • four vertical sides 23, and a hollow accommodation space 24, preferably a concavity, in one of the vertical sides 23, and
[0020] - a wrapping unit 10 adapted to be, preferably releasably, arranged in the accommodation space 24, said wrapping unit 10 comprising:
[0021] • a housing 11 , and
[0022] • a, preferably retractable, wrapping 12 arranged inside said housing 11 in an inactive state, wherein said wrapping 12 is adapted to be extended from the housing 11 to encase the load at least partially 6 on said pallet 2 during use of said wrapping 12.
[0023] Hereby providing an integration of packaging features directly into the pallet design. Unlike conventional pallets and separate packaging materials, this invention combines pallet and packaging functionalities in a single, seamless solution.
[0024] By eliminating the need for single-use wrapping and packaging materials, the invention aligns with the vision of achieving a zero-waste logistics system. This significantly reduces the generation of waste and promotes sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.
[0025] In an embodiment the base element 20 is designed to support and / or receive the load.
[0026] In an embodiment the wrapping 12 is preferably flexible and / or retractable.
[0027] Other alternatives to the packaging system have been tried in the industry. However, they are all an addon after the pallet has been loaden and are not directly integrated in the pallet structure. They therefor require external handling, and they are put on the load that still requires a “traditional” pallet.
[0028] In an embodiment the pallet 2 comprises at least two hollow accommodation spaces 24a, 24b, preferably four hollow accommodation spaces 24 a-c arranged at the four vertical sides 23a-c and / or at least two wrapping units 10a, 10b, preferably four wrapping units 10a-c adapted to be arranged in said four accommodation spaces 24a-c, so that said wrapping 12a-c of each wrapping unit 10a-c enclose a part of the load 6. In an alternative embodiment the pallet 2 comprises a pair of opposite, accommodation spaces 24a, c in two opposite, vertical sides 23a, c and a pair of wrapping units 10a, c adapted to be releasably arranged in said pair of accommodation spaces 24a, c, and / or the pallet comprises a second pair of opposite, accommodation spaces 24b, d in two opposite, vertical sides 23b, d and a second pair of wrapping units 10b, d adapted to be releasably arranged in said pair of accommodation spaces 24b, d.
[0029] In an embodiment the wrapping unit 10 may be attached to the accommodation space 23 by a click-system, so as to securely join the wrapping unit 10 to the pallet 2 with a simple clicking or snapping action.
[0030] The design of the packaging system facilitates easy handling, wrapping, un-wrapping, and reuse. The integrated wrapping may be quickly pulled out and retracted, streamlining the packaging process, and eliminating the need for external tools or materials.
[0031] In an embodiment the base element 20 comprises two elongated openings 25 in a vertical side 23a, stretching from said side 23a towards the opposite vertical side 23c, said openings adapted to receive part of a forklift for transportation of said packaging system 1.
[0032] In an alternative embodiment the base element 20 comprises two elongated openings 25 in a vertical side 23a, stretching from said side 23a towards the opposite vertical side 23c, said openings adapted to receive part of a transportation machine such as a forklift or pallet lifter for transportation of said packaging system 1.
[0033] Some traditional packaging solutions require additional handling or equipment for transport, whereas the integrated packaging on the pallet incorporates features that align seamlessly with the standard dimensions and capabilities of a forklift.
[0034] By integrating the packaging features directly into the pallet design, users can conveniently load, secure, and transport the palletized goods using a forklift without the need for external tools or complicated setup. The retractable curtains and adjustable straps are positioned in a way that allows the forklift's forks to easily access and lift the pallet from multiple sides. This advantage ensures a streamlined process for both loading and unloading the palletized goods. Forklift operators can approach the pallet from different angles, making it highly versatile for various warehouse layouts or loading scenarios. As a result, the new system enhances operational efficiency and minimizes the time required for loading and unloading, ultimately contributing to smoother logistics processes and increased productivity.
[0035] Furthermore, the integration of packaging features that are compatible with forklift operations reduces the risk of errors or misalignments during transport. The forklift-friendly design minimizes the chances of damage to the packaging or goods, promoting safer handling and preventing disruptions to the supply chain.
[0036] In an embodiment the wrapping 12 comprises an attachment element 13 adapted to secure said wrapping 12 on the load 6.
[0037] In an embodiment the wrapping is a curtain cover 14.
[0038] In an embodiment the packaging system comprises at least two covers, preferably at least three covers, more preferred at least four covers.
[0039] By providing different possibilities for the placement and type of wrappings, the design thus allows for both full and semi-cover options, catering to various types of load and transportation needs. The adaptable design ensures that different products can be securely transported without the need for separate packaging solutions.
[0040] In an embodiment the system 1 further comprising:
[0041] - a strapping unit 4 adapted to be, preferably releasably, arranged in an opening 27 in said pallet 2, said strapping unit 4 comprising:
[0042] • a strap housing 41 , and
[0043] • a, preferably retractable, strap 42 arranged inside said strap housing 41 in an inactive state, wherein said strap 42 is adapted to be extended from the strap housing 41 to extend across the load at least partially 6 on said pallet 2 during use of said strap 42.
[0044] In an embodiment the strap 42 is adjustable and / or flexible By providing both wrapping and straps integrated into the pallet load security is enhanced. The combination of wrapping and straps provides a dual-layered approach to securing the load. The wrapping may offer protection from external elements such as dust, moisture, and light, which can be particularly important for sensitive or fragile goods. On the other hand, the integrated straps serve as an additional layer of securing the load to prevent shifting during transportation. This combination not only ensures the physical safety of the load but also minimizes the risk of damage, improving the overall quality of goods upon delivery.
[0045] Furthermore the elimination of traditional plastic wrapping and the integration of secure straps enhance the safety and working conditions for handlers. The risk of injuries from sharp edges, splinters, or discarded plastic is significantly reduced, leading to a safer work environment.
[0046] In an embodiment the pallet 2 further comprises at least two legs 26, preferably four legs 26, more preferred six legs 26 arranged adjacent to the bottom side 22 of the base element 20.
[0047] In an embodiment the pallet 2 comprises four legs 26, preferably six legs 26, more preferred nine legs 26 arranged adjacent to the bottom side 22 of the base element 20.
[0048] By providing legs on the pallet, easy handling, and transportation of the pallet by forklifts or other material handling equipment is provided. The legs elevate the pallet above the ground or floor, allowing the forks of a forklift to be inserted underneath the bottom side. Hereby facilitating efficient and safe loading, unloading, and movement of the pallet with its load. Additionally, the legs provide stability to the pallet, preventing direct contact with the ground and reducing the risk of damage to the load during handling and transportation.
[0049] In an embodiment the legs 26 comprises the opening 27 for receiving the strap housing 41.
[0050] In a further embodiment the legs 26 comprises a receiving hole 43 for attaching the end of the strap 42 that extends across the load 6. In yet another embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises at least two straps 42a- b, preferably at least 4 straps 42a-d, more preferred more than six straps 42a-f.
[0051] In a preferred embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises eight straps 42a-h.
[0052] In an embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises at least two receiving holes 43a- b, preferably at least 4 receiving holes 43a-d, more preferred more than six receiving holes 43a-f.
[0053] In an embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises at eight receiving holes 43a-f.
[0054] Incorporating the adjustable straps within the legs of the pallet offers a distinct advantage by providing an efficient and secure load securing mechanism. The integration of the straps into the pallet's structural design ensures that they are readily accessible and conveniently positioned for use. This design not only eliminates the need for external tools or separate strapping equipment but also maximizes the utilization of available space on the pallet.
[0055] In an embodiment the wrapping 12 is adapted to be retractable, so that when said wrapping is not in use, said wrapping 12 is positioned within the housing 11 in said accommodation space 23.
[0056] In an embodiment the strap is adapted to be retractable, so that when said strap is not in use, said strap is positioned within the strap housing in said strap accommodation space.
[0057] By arranging the straps within the legs, the risk of entanglement or damage to the load during transportation is significantly reduced. The straps can be pulled over the load and securely attached to the opposite side of the pallet via the receiving hole in another leg, effectively immobilizing the load and preventing shifting or movement. This integrated strap arrangement not only enhances the stability of the load but also streamlines the loading and unloading process, minimizing the time required for load handling.
[0058] Furthermore, this integrated strap design contributes to the overall aesthetics and ergonomics of the pallet. With the straps neatly incorporated into the legs, there are fewer protruding elements, reducing the potential for snagging or tangling during handling. In an embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises:
[0059] - the pallet 2 with at least one, preferably two opposite, accommodation spaces 24a, b and at least one, preferably two, wrapping units 10a, b arranged in said accommodation spaces, and
[0060] - a second pallet 3 with at least one, preferably two opposite, accommodation spaces 34a, b and at least one, preferably two, wrapping units 30a, b arranged in said accommodation spaces, wherein the second pallet 3 is arranged on said pallet 2, so as to provide a versatile packaging system.
[0061] In an alternative embodiment the packaging system 1 comprises:
[0062] - the pallet 2 with at least one, preferably two opposite, accommodation spaces 24a, b and at least one, preferably two, wrapping units 10a, b arranged in said accommodation spaces, and
[0063] - a second pallet 3 with at least one, preferably two opposite, accommodation spaces 34a, b and at least one, preferably two, wrapping units 30a, b arranged in said accommodation spaces, wherein the second pallet 3 is arranged on said pallet 2, so as to provide a versatile packaging system.
[0064] In an embodiment the lowermost pallet and the uppermost, second, pallet are rotated with respect to each other before being position on top of each other. The uppermost pallet is preferably rotated approximately 90 degrees to allow the wrapping unit of each pallet to not be on top of each other.
[0065] Hereby a full cover design is provided which provides comprehensive protection to the load from various environmental factors and potential hazards during transportation and storage. This innovative design ensures that the entire load is shielded from elements such as dust, moisture, sunlight, and even minor impacts that could potentially affect the integrity of the load.
[0066] By encompassing the entire load with retractable curtains that can be securely fastened, the full cover design creates a barrier that minimizes the risk of damage or contamination. This is particularly beneficial when transporting sensitive or delicate goods, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, or perishable items. The curtains serve as an effective shield against adverse weather conditions, preventing rain, snow, or sunlight from compromising the quality of the load.
[0067] Moreover, the full cover design contributes to efficient space utilization. By enclosing the load within the curtains, the load can be optimally stacked on top of other pallets, utilizing vertical space without the concern of exposed or overhanging items. This approach is especially valuable when dealing with limited storage or transportation space, maximizing capacity, and reducing the need for excessive packaging materials.
[0068] In addition to protecting the load, the full cover design enhances the pallet's versatility. The retractable curtains can be easily pulled and secured, adapting to different load sizes and shapes. This adaptability ensures that the same pallet can accommodate a variety of goods, reducing the need for specialized packaging solutions and streamlining logistics operations.
[0069] In summary, the full cover design offers a comprehensive solution that addresses load protection, space optimization, and adaptability, making it an advantageous choice for transporting a wide range of goods in a secure and efficient manner.
[0070] In an embodiment the upper side 21 of the pallet 2 comprises a structured surface 28, preferably comprising soft rubber / plastic, adapted to allow drainage of liquids and / or provide a non-slip surface for the load 6.
[0071] The structured surface on the pallet enhances stability, load-bearing capacity, and cargo security. With improved grip and even weight distribution, it prevents load shifting during transport. Durability and versatility make it suitable for diverse cargo types. The grid-like pattern reduces wear and tear, ensuring a safe and secure transport solution.
[0072] In an embodiment the packaging system 1 further comprises a tracking and data system 5, integrated with the pallet 2, adapted to provide, preferably real-time, tracking and / or performance data and / or inventory overview of the load.
[0073] The incorporation of a tracking system and data insights offers real-time monitoring and transparency throughout the logistics process. This enhances control, inventory management, and decision-making for businesses. Furthermore it is thus possible to provide consumers with a tracking, repair, and recycling service essential in Zero- Waste logistics. This guarantees that the product remains within the production loop. Assistance in plastic waste handling may also be offered to the consumer as well as transforming their waste into a valuable resource lowering the production costs - while together positively impacting the environment.
[0074] According to a second aspect of the invention a method of wrapping a load 6 on a pallet 2 using the packaging system 1 according to any of the preceding claims, comprising the steps of:
[0075] - loading a load 6 onto the upper side 21 of the pallet 2;
[0076] - extending at least one retractable wrapping 12 from its housing 11 to cover at least a part of the load 6 and / or
[0077] - extending at least one strap 42 from its strap housing 41 to extend at least partly across the load.
[0078] According to a third aspect of the invention a method of un-wrapping a load 6 on a pallet 2 using the packaging system 1 according to any of the preceding claims, comprising the steps of:
[0079] - releasing the wrapping 12 and / or strap 42 from the load 6, wherein said wrapping 12 and / or strap 42 is adapted to be retractable into its housing 11 and / or strap housing 41 arranged in and / or integrated with the pallet 2.
[0080] The design's collapsible and retractable features reduce storage space requirements when not in use. This optimization contributes to efficient warehouse management and space utilization.
[0081] The invention's design for disassembly allows for easy repair and replacement of components, extending the product's lifespan. This aligns with circular economy principles, promoting resource efficiency and minimizing waste.
