Description

Base station device performing individual beamforming for multi-carrier signals and its driving method

[0001] The present invention relates to a base station device that performs individual beamforming for multiple carrier signals and a method for driving the same.

[0002] Because 5G uses higher-frequency bands with relatively greater propagation loss compared to 3G and 4G, securing coverage similar to 3G and 4G requires higher-power base station equipment and a greater number of base stations. Beamforming is a technology that aims to improve coverage by focusing energy in a beam using multiple array antennas.

[0003] Additionally, 5G uses multiple user-multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) technology to provide users with higher-speed data, and beamforming can be applied to prevent interference and improve data throughput by ensuring that each layer connecting the base station and the terminal in the MIMO service is set up as an independent path.

[0004] However, in the case of conventional common equipment for operators, since digital and RF circuits are shared by multiple operators, there is a limitation that there is only one path per MIMO layer and different paths cannot be provided for each operator, so beamforming technology could not be applied despite its various advantages.

[0005] In particular, expanding 5G coverage and improving service quality requires greater investment in base station equipment from telecommunications operators. However, investment in new base station installations is decreasing each year. In this context, increasing investment efficiency is crucial to accelerate 5G coverage expansion and service quality improvements. To achieve this, the development of shared cell technology and equipment, shared by multiple operators to reduce the burden of O-RU investment costs and minimize the need for expensive DUs, is essential.

[0006] Meanwhile, existing RANs lack established standards and are developed without consideration for compatibility with equipment from other companies. This makes it impossible to rely on a specific vendor, limiting competition among equipment manufacturers for individual LAN elements and causing equipment prices to rise. This also limits the flexibility of network design and hinders technological innovation.

[0007] In this regard, Open RAN is a standardized technology built through collaboration between various equipment vendors and telecommunications companies to resolve these compatibility issues. This allows telecommunications companies and enterprises to purchase equipment on better terms without relying on specific vendors, and by developing more innovative features and services, it can provide an opportunity for small and medium-sized companies to enter the market.

[0008] In addition, open LAN technology is recognized as a key technology for developing the nation's communication network, which is the country's basic infrastructure, into a secure communication network by breaking away from dependence on foreign vendors. Therefore, it is very urgent to secure technology and equipment through development of related technologies as it is certain that technology development and equipment competition among mobile communication equipment manufacturers will accelerate in the future.

[0009] The technology underlying this application is disclosed in Korean Patent Publication No. 10-1728337.

[0010] The present invention is intended to solve the problems of the prior art described above, and to provide a base station device and its driving method that performs individual beamforming for multiple operator signals, which can achieve coverage improvement and data rate improvement effects through beamforming using individual beams of operators in each MIMO Layer even in operator common equipment by individually applying a weighting matrix (code book) for amplitude and phase for each operator to hardware of a digital beamforming structure.

[0011] However, the technical tasks to be achieved by the embodiments of the present invention are not limited to the technical tasks described above, and other technical tasks may exist.

[0012] As a technical means for achieving the above-mentioned technical task, a base station device performing individual beamforming for a multi-operator signal according to one embodiment of the present invention can form at least one layer for transmitting and receiving signals with a user terminal.

[0013] Additionally, multiple beam paths corresponding to multiple operator signals within the layer can be independently set.

[0014] Additionally, the base station device may include a precoder block including a plurality of precoders that perform individual digital precoding for each of the plurality of carrier signals.

[0015] In addition, the base station device may include an antenna block including a receiving block for obtaining the plurality of operator signals, the precoder block, a modulation block for modulating a signal passing through the precoder block, and a plurality of antenna elements for individually outputting modulated signals by the modulation block.

[0016] Additionally, an RF signal chain corresponding to the number of the plurality of antenna elements can be formed.

[0017] Additionally, the precoder block can apply a weight matrix for distinguishing the plurality of beam paths by setting at least one of amplitude and phase for each of the plurality of operator signals.

[0018] Additionally, the base station device may include an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) based unit.

[0019] Additionally, a plurality of the above open wireless access network-based units can form a shared cell via a fronthaul multiplexer (FHM) device.

[0020] Meanwhile, a method for performing individual beamforming for multiple operator signals according to one embodiment of the present invention may include (a) a step of acquiring multiple operator signals and (b) a step of forming a layer for transmitting and receiving signals linked to a user terminal and the multiple operator signals.

[0021] Additionally, the step (b) may include a step of independently setting a plurality of beam paths corresponding to each of the plurality of operator signals within the layer.

[0022] Additionally, the step (b) may include a step of performing individual digital precoding on each of the plurality of operator signals using a precoder block including a plurality of precoders.

[0023] In addition, a method for performing individual beamforming for a multi-operator signal according to one embodiment of the present invention may include (c) a step of modulating a signal passing through the precoder block to generate a modulated signal, and (d) a step of individually outputting the modulated signal along the plurality of beam paths using an antenna block including a plurality of antenna elements.

[0024] The above-described problem-solving methods are merely exemplary and should not be construed as limiting the present invention. In addition to the exemplary embodiments described above, additional embodiments may be included in the drawings and detailed description of the invention.

[0025] According to the above-described means for solving the problem of the present invention, by individually applying a weighting matrix (code book) for amplitude and phase for each operator to the hardware of the digital beamforming structure, it is possible to provide a base station device and a method for operating the same that perform individual beamforming for multiple operator signals, which can achieve coverage improvement and data rate improvement effects through beamforming using individual beams of each operator in each MIMO Layer even in operator common equipment.

[0026] According to the solution to the aforementioned problem of the present invention, the same coverage level can be achieved even with low output through a base station device that performs individual beamforming for each operator.

[0027] According to the aforementioned solution to the problem of the present invention, each terminal can operate with a higher priority (rank) by reducing interference in the signal path, thereby improving the data rate that can be provided to the terminal.

[0028] According to the aforementioned means of solving the problem of this invention, it can provide an opportunity to suggest the future development direction of base station equipment and predict its performance as a technology that will be fundamentally applied in future 5G and 6G that aim for high-speed services based on multi-user MIMO.

[0029] However, the effects that can be obtained from this center are not limited to the effects described above, and other effects may exist.

[0042] Throughout this specification, when it is said that a member is located “on,” “above,” “upper,” “lower,” “lower” or “lower” another member, this includes not only cases where the member is in contact with the other member, but also cases where another member exists between the two members.

[0043] Throughout this specification, whenever a part is said to "include" a component, this does not mean that it excludes other components, but rather that it may include other components, unless otherwise specifically stated.

[0044] The present invention relates to a base station device that performs individual beamforming for multiple carrier signals and a method for driving the same.

[0045] Figure 1 is a conceptual diagram illustrating a carrier-common shared cell structure based on an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).

[0046] Referring to FIG. 1, a multi-carrier signal-based communication system (1) (hereinafter referred to as “communication system (1)”) according to one embodiment of the present invention may be implemented to include, for example, a unit based on an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).

[0047] More specifically, referring to A of FIG. 1, the communication system (1) can form a shared cell with a plurality of open wireless access network-based units (e.g., shared O-RUs, etc.) via a fronthaul multiplexer (FHM) device. For example, eight O-RUs can be connected (accessed) to one fronthaul multiplexer (FHM) device, and the communication system (1) can be formed in a hierarchical structure in which a plurality of fronthaul multiplexer (FHM) devices are connected as upper and lower modules.

[0048] In addition, referring to B of FIG. 1, the communication system (1) disclosed in the present invention can be implemented in a structure in which a plurality of open wireless access network-based units (e.g., Shared O-RU, etc.) are connected in a cascade form, and for example, in the case of the O-RU Cascade mode, a shared cell function that accommodates three or more O-RUs can be supported.

[0049] In addition, referring to C of FIG. 1, the communication system (1) disclosed in the present invention may be implemented in the form of an in-building communication system in which an open wireless access network-based unit (e.g., Shared O-RU, etc.) is connected (accessed) to a lower module (e.g., Hub Unit (HU), Service Unit (SU), etc.) within a building where the communication system (1) is implemented by a wired path in consideration of the characteristics of the in-building environment, and the beamforming path is logically distributed (divided) by the wired path.

[0050] In this regard, FIG. 2 is a drawing exemplifying an implementation example of a multi-carrier signal-based communication system for the operation of shared cells and operator common base stations.

[0051] Referring to FIG. 2, the communication system (1) may be implemented to include at least one of an ORAN Distributed Unit (O-DU, 10), a fronthaul multiplexer (FHM) device (20), and a radio unit (ORAN Radio Unit, O-RU, 30).

[0052] Specifically, referring to (a) of FIG. 2, in the case of a communication system (1) equipped with an FHM device (20), eight or more O-RUs (30) are connected (connected) to one FHM device (20) to form one single cell (shared cell) and can operate to transmit a signal to an upper layer O-DU (10) or transmit a signal transmitted from an O-DU (10) to an lower layer O-RU (30).

[0053] In addition, referring to (b) of FIG. 2, a communication system (1) may be implemented by forming a shared cell by having a plurality of O-RUs (30) directly connected to an O-DU (10) according to an implementation example of the present invention, and further, referring to (c) of FIG. 2, a communication system (1) for an in-building environment may be implemented by having a plurality of O-RUs (30) each connected to an FHM device (20) through a wired connection method in each unit space (e.g., individual floor, etc.) within the in-building environment.

[0054] Meanwhile, referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, communication devices such as O-DU (10) of the communication system (1) can be independently developed by different operators (vendors), and in the case of conventional operator-common equipment for integrating them, since digital and RF circuits are shared by multiple operators, there is a limitation that there is only one path per MIMO layer and different paths cannot be provided for each operator, so there is a problem that beamforming technology cannot be applied despite its various advantages.

[0055] In consideration of this, the communication system (1) disclosed in the present invention can achieve interference prevention and data rate improvement effects by setting independent beam paths for each operator and layer (communication layer) by applying digital beam forming based on operator-specific pre-coding as described in detail below through a base station device (100) (hereinafter referred to as 'base station device (100)') that performs individual beamforming for multiple operator signals.

[0056] For reference, in the description of the embodiment of the present invention, the base station device (100) refers to the same device as the above-described O-DU (10), O-RU (30), etc. and FHM device (20) as an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN)-based unit according to the implementation example of the communication system (1), or may be implemented as a lower module mounted on each device (in other words, O-DU (10), FHM device (20), O-RU (30), etc.).

[0057] Meanwhile, the base station device (100), user terminal (200), O-DU (10), FHM device (20), and O-RU (30) disclosed in the present invention can communicate with each other through a network (not shown). The network (not shown) refers to a connection structure that enables information exchange between each node, such as terminals and servers, and examples of such a network (not shown) include, but are not limited to, a 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) network, an LTE (Long Term Evolution) network, a 5G network, a WIMAX (World Interoperability for Microwave Access) network, the Internet, a LAN (Local Area Network), a Wireless LAN (Wireless Local Area Network), a WAN (Wide Area Network), a PAN (Personal Area Network), a wifi network, a Bluetooth network, a satellite broadcasting network, an analog broadcasting network, a DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) network, etc.

[0058] The user terminal (200) may be any type of wireless communication device, such as, for example, a smartphone, a smart pad, a tablet PC, a PCS (Personal Communication System), a GSM (Global System for Mobile communication), a PDC (Personal Digital Cellular), a PHS (Personal Handyphone System), a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), an IMT (International Mobile Telecommunication)-2000, a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)-2000, a W-CDMA (W-Code Division Multiple Access), or a Wibro (Wireless Broadband Internet) terminal.

[0059] Figure 3 is a functional and interface configuration diagram of a Fronthaul MUX for one embodiment of the present invention.

[0060] Referring to FIG. 3, the FHM device (20) of the communication system (1) disclosed in the present invention is modeled as an O-RU capable of performing wireless transmission / reception, which is placed between the O-DU (10) and the O-RU (30) to support the LLS (Lower Layer Split) fronthaul and provides the Copy-and-Combine function for the implementation of a 5G open LAN-based operator-common shared cell base station, and can be implemented to perform selective transmission / reception of signals using beam identifier information (beamId), synchronization and timing control, O&M processing for operation management, delay management, etc., depending on the implementation example of the present invention.

[0061] In addition, referring to FIG. 3, a digital transmission technology and multiplex technology can be applied to a base station device (100) so that multiple O-DUs of the same operator or multiple operators can share and use one O-RU.

[0062] Figure 4 is a conceptual diagram for explaining a digital beamforming method based on digital precoding.

[0063] Referring to (a) of Fig. 4, in the case of the conventional beamforming method, since each layer is operated in a form that shares an RF path, there was a limitation in that individual beam steering for each operator signal was impossible, and thus beamforming function could not be provided. In contrast, referring to (b) of Fig. 4, the base station device (100) disclosed in the present invention is a 5G-based public base station, and by applying digital encoding for each operator signal, it is designed to enable independent beam steering for each operator within the same communication layer, thereby improving coverage and data speed.

[0064] In this regard, Fig. 5 is a conceptual diagram showing the effect of preventing interference between paths and expanding coverage according to beamforming.

[0065] Referring to (a) of FIG. 5, in the case of conventional base station equipment, beamforming can be performed on a layer-by-layer basis as described above, whereas in the case of the base station device (100) disclosed in the present invention, individual beam path setting for each operator signal is possible as in (b) of FIG. 5, so even when the operators (telecommunication companies, vendors) covering each user terminal (300) are different, operator signals can be individually transmitted, so there is an advantage in that individual beamforming on a user-by-user basis can be implemented.

[0066] FIG. 6 is a schematic diagram of a base station device that performs individual beamforming for multi-carrier signals according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0067] Referring to FIG. 6, the base station device (100) may include a receiving block (110), a precoder block (120), a modulation block (130), and an antenna block (140).

[0068] The receiving block (110) can acquire multiple carrier signals. Meanwhile, in the description of the embodiment of the present invention, the carrier signals corresponding to each telecommunications carrier may be signals to which distinct frequency bands are assigned corresponding to each of the multiple carriers.

[0069] In this regard, according to one embodiment of the present invention, the receiving block (110) may be equipped with a digital filter that selectively turns on and off the payload of each of multiple operators for a predefined communication frame depending on whether a signal of a specific operator is received.

[0070] The precoder block (120) can form a layer for transmitting and receiving signals linked to a user terminal (200) and multiple operator signals.

[0071] Specifically, the precoder block (120) can independently set multiple beam paths corresponding to each of multiple operator signals within a layer. In this regard, according to one embodiment of the present invention, the precoder block (120) can perform individual digital precoding for each of multiple operator signals using multiple precoders (121).

[0072] Specifically, according to one embodiment of the present invention, the precoder block (120) can apply a weight matrix to distinguish multiple beam paths within a layer by setting at least one of amplitude and phase for each of multiple operator signals.

[0073] Meanwhile, according to one embodiment of the present invention, a base station device (100) wirelessly transmits and receives radio waves with a user terminal (200), and may use beamforming technology to establish an independent path for each operator signal between the base station device (100) and the user terminal (200).

[0074] In 5G networks that use high frequencies in the millimeter wave band, beamforming technology is used to overcome the high path loss of high-frequency signals, and considering the narrow coverage characteristics of the beam, a beam-alignment process is required to find a beam angle that suits each other in order for the base station device (100) and the user terminal (200) to exchange data with each other. Specifically, in order to align the beam between the base station device (100) and the user terminal (200), the base station device (100) can sequentially beamform and transmit a signal of an SSB (Synchronization Signal Block) in one direction at a predetermined angle. This process of transmitting or receiving a signal while turning the direction of the beam at a predetermined angle is called beam-sweeping or beam-scanning, where beam-sweeping refers to an action viewed from the base station device (100), and beam-scanning refers to an action viewed from the receiver.

[0075] For example, if a base station device (100) can have n beam directions through one layer, the base station device (100) can transmit a signal such as SSB while sweeping the directions it wants to support for each of the n beam directions. At this time, at least one beam can be grouped, and in this case, a signal such as SSB can be transmitted for each beam group.

[0076] A Synchronization Signal Block (SSB) transmitted in the same direction may have multiple SSBs within a single cell. When multiple SSBs exist, an SSB index may be used to distinguish each SSB. For example, when SSBs are transmitted in eight beam directions from a single base station device (100), eight SSB indices with different beam directions, for example, SSB0 to SSB7, may be transmitted.

[0077] The modulation block (130) can generate a modulation signal by modulating a signal that has passed through the precoder block (120).

[0078] The antenna block (140) can individually output the modulation signal generated by the modulation block (130) according to a plurality of beam paths divided and set using a plurality of antenna elements (141).

[0079] At this time, when the user terminal (200) is powered on or attempts to connect to a new cell, the user terminal (200) can use SSB information to determine and synchronize the time and frequency parameters required to transmit downlink and uplink signals at an accurate time with the base station device (100), and at this time, the user terminal (200) can obtain information such as beam ID (identity) from the SSB information.

[0080] Also, referring to FIG. 6, an RF signal chain corresponding to the number of antenna elements (141) may be formed by the antenna block (140). In this regard, for example, the antenna block (140) may be provided with a plurality of antenna elements (141) corresponding to a phased array antenna of a 2x4x2 Cross Pole structure for beamforming.

[0081] FIG. 7 is a conceptual diagram for explaining the operation process of a base station device that performs individual beamforming for multi-carrier signals according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0082] Referring to FIG. 7, the base station device (100) can provide coverage improvement and data rate improvement effects through beamforming using individual beams of each operator in each MIMO Layer even in operator common equipment by individually applying a weighting matrix (code book) for amplitude and phase for each operator to the hardware of the digital beamforming structure.

[0083] In particular, referring to FIG. 7, the precoder block (120) may be equipped with an antenna selection module (150) for selecting an antenna element (141) that outputs a signal corresponding to each of the base station device (100) and the user terminal (200) that transmits and receives a signal, and the antenna selection module (150) receives channel status information (Channel Status / State Information, CSI) from the user terminal (200), and based on the received channel status information, selects beam identifier information (Selection beamId) in consideration of the device type of the user terminal (200), the operator (telecommunications company, vendor) associated with the user terminal (200), and selects an antenna element (141) that will transmit a signal to the corresponding user terminal (200) from among a plurality of antenna elements (141) equipped in the antenna block (140).

[0084] Figure 8 is a conceptual diagram illustrating a shared cell structure based on an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).

[0085] Referring to FIG. 8, when the communication system (1) is implemented in the form of a shared cell in which multiple O-RUs (30) configure coverage through the same cell ID, the base station device (100) can apply a digital transmission method and multiplexing technology for optimal operation according to the shared cell operation mode and scenario, and further, timing synchronization, clock cleaning, delay measurement, etc. can be applied.

[0086] Figure 9 is a conceptual diagram for explaining efficiency and performance improvement using beam identifier information based on an Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN).

[0087] Referring to FIG. 9, according to one embodiment of the present invention, a base station device (100) can improve energy efficiency and prevent inter-cell interference in downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) by controlling RF payload according to beam identifier information (beamId) to optimize the output of a downlink (DL) signal.

[0088] Below, we will briefly review the operating flow of the present invention based on the detailed description above.

[0093] In this regard, in step S12, the precoder block (120) can independently set multiple beam paths corresponding to each of multiple operator signals within a layer.

[0094] Specifically, in step S12, the precoder block (120) can perform individual digital precoding for each of the plurality of operator signals using a plurality of precoders (121).

[0096] Next, in step S14, the antenna block (140) can individually output the (d) modulation signal according to a plurality of beam paths that are divided and set using a plurality of antenna elements (141).

[0097] In the above description, steps S11 to S14 may be further divided into additional steps or combined into fewer steps, depending on the implementation example of the present invention. Furthermore, some steps may be omitted as needed, and the order of the steps may be changed.
