Description

[0001] System for loading a transport container and loading device for loading luggage

[0002] The present invention is related to a system for loading a transport container with a plurality of objects, in particular suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks. The present invention is also related to a loading device for loading of luggage into a transport container.

[0003] Handling of objects, such as suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks is getting increasingly more important. Handling of objects such as suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks is particular important on for example airports. However, it is conceivable that the present invention is used in other applications where objects need to be loaded into a transport container. After a passenger has handed in their suitcase, bag, and / or backpack, it is to be loaded into a dedicated transport container, such that the suitcase, bag, and / or backpack of that specific passenger is in fact loaded into the plane that person is travelling with. However, the cargo space of a plane is typically limited. Therefore, packing of the cargo space requires particular planning, not only in terms of not exceeding a maximum weight and volume, but also in terms of efficiency. Hence, it is preferred that transport containers are loaded in an efficient manner. The loading of transport containers may be realized by manual loading. This involves disadvantages regarding for example ergonomics, and / or workload of employees. Due to the increasing importance of the way transport containers are loaded, the systems for loading transport containers need to comply with increasingly more stringent requirements. The requirements may for example relate to a certain packaging speed, i.e. , the speed at which the system may be able to load a transport container. Yet, requirements may also relate to the ability of the system to come up with an optimal (i.e., in terms of time, space, weight, etc.) packaging of transport containers. Moreover, requirements may relate to the maintenance and / or durability of the system.

[0004] In order to meet the requirements for loading systems currently used systems, in particular the older loading systems, may need to be updated. However, a downside of the stricter requirements that need to be met is that devices which meet these requirements are typically overly complex and / or very expensive. One particular example is a robot arm which is configured for automated baggage handling. A first problem is that the control technology for such robot arms is typically overly complex. This requires highly trained personnel or external parties for maintenance to the robot arm. Hence, this may in particular in case of errors cause major delays in the luggage handling. Secondly, these robot arms are typically very expensive, and hence will not be affordable by a wide range of users of such systems. Yet further, it is not always possible to provide the needed space to make use of a robot arm in a loading system. That is because the robot arm needs to be located in a restricted access area, rendering costly space unusable for other purposes.

[0005] Therefore, it is a first goal of the present invention to provide for a loading system which is less complex in maintenance.

[0006] It is a second object of the invention to provide a loading system which able to manoeuvre in tight spaces, without requiring expensive equipment.

[0007] It is a third goal of the present invention to provide a simple and robust loading system.

[0008] It is a fourth goal of the present invention to provide an alternative loading system which achieves a low drop of the object.

[0009] It is a fifth goal of the present invention to provide a loading system for a more efficient loading of a transport container.

[0010] The present invention thereto provides a system for loading a transport container with a plurality of objects, in particular suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks, comprising, optionally at least one supply conveyor, for supplying one or more objects, in particular objects to be loaded into the transport container, at least one loading device, comprising at least one frame, at least one loading plate, wherein said loading plate is movable with respect to the at least one frame, preferably in at least one extension direction, comprising at least one carrying surface for carrying of at least one object to be loaded, and wherein the loading plate is at least movable between at least one receiving position, for receiving of an object to be loaded from the supply conveyor, and at least one release position, for releasing of an object at a release location in the transport container, wherein said transport container is arranged in a release area, optionally at least one retaining element for retaining an object located on the at least one loading plate, at least one ejector, for removing an object from the carrying surface of the movable loading plate when the loading plate is at the release position, and optionally at least one track, which extends in a direction different from and / or perpendicular to the at least one extension direction, wherein the loading device is movable along the at least one track.

[0011] Due to the loading device, the system according to the present invention may be more robust, or at least simpler in constructions. This may allow for easier maintenance, which in particular may not require meticulous training for maintenance staff. One of the main advantages of the system according to the present invention is the use of a loading plate in the loading device. The loading plate being movable in an extension direction allows placement of an object to be placed in a transport container in a simple manner. Additionally, the extension possibilities of the loading plate provide for a low drop, and therefore may contribute to specific and stable packaging of the transport container. The extension direction may allow, or at least contribute to, the movement of the loading plate between the receiving position and the release position. In this respect, it is noted that there may be a difference between the release position of the loading plate and the release location for the object to be loaded. Preferably, the release position is determined such that an object on the carrying surface of the loading plate can be ejected, or removed, from said carrying surface to land on the release location. The release location may preferably be located inside a transport container. The track may allow the loading device to be arranged at a preferred location, in particular with respect to the supply conveyor, if applied, and with respect to the transport container. The track may extend at least partially along an opening or access portion of a transport container. This may allow the loading device to be arranged at a predetermined point in front of the transport container and subsequently move the loading plate in the extension direction. The loading device may be positioned at any point along the track. The combination of movements may allow the object to be placed in a particular, and optionally predetermined, release location. Preferably, the track extends along a width of a transport container. It is imaginable that the track is formed by a network of interconnected tracks. Hence, the track does not necessarily need to be a straight trajectory. The loading plate, in particular the extension direction may at least partially be in the depth direction of a container. The at least one loading device may be configured for displacing an object from the loading plate into the transport container. By using the retaining element, the system according to the present invention may be able to ensure that the objects will not be lost during transport from the supply conveyor to the transport container. That is, systems according to the prior art may carry an object which lies exposed on a loading plate. However, this may cause (e.g., due to sudden movement or unstable objects) the object to fall on the ground, or even worse, block a part of the system. Hence, by use of the at least one retaining element this may essentially be prevented.

[0012] It is imaginable that in the receiving position, at least a portion of the carrying surface of the loading plate is at least partially aligned with a transport surface of the supply conveyor and optionally can be adjusted depending on the height of the supply conveyor. Preferably, at least the side of the carrying surface facing towards the supply conveyor is aligned with said supply conveyor. In this respect the wording aligned may be understood as the carrying surface being able to reliably receive an object from the supply conveyor. For example, wherein said carrying surface is substantially flush, i.e., on the same height, as the supply conveyor. This may provide for a reliable entry of the object onto the loading device. By aligning the latter parts, also delicate objects may be handled by the loading device according to the present invention. It is also conceivable that the carrying surface of the loading plate is positioned slightly below the transport surface of a supply conveyor. It is conceivable that this latter example may lead to a limited drop. The limited drop may reduce the risk that loose straps of objects, such as backpacks, get trapped in the loading device.

[0013] The loading device may be configured for simultaneously loading a plurality of transport containers. It is preferred that the at least one track stretches along the plurality of transport containers, such that the frame of the loading device may be moved towards each of the transport containers. Simultaneously loading the plurality of transport containers may be performed in a random order. Hence, it is not required to load the transport containers in a fixed order. The loading device may be arranged to load the transport containers based on an input received from a control unit, if applied. It is also imaginable that the system comprises a plurality of loading devices, wherein each loading device is arranged for loading of at least one transport container. The plurality of loading devices may receive an object to be loaded from a single supply conveyor, however it is also possible that a plurality of supply conveyors is provided. The supply conveyor and the at least one track may be at least partly positioned substantially parallel. This may allow for an efficient system. The track may in this instance be formed in a more robust and simple manner, allowing the loading device to be, preferably exclusively, translated along said track.

[0014] The supply conveyor may be a transport belt. However, the supply conveyor may be formed by one or more independently movable Automated Guided Vehicles, each supplying one or more objects to be loaded towards the loading device. Yet, the supply conveyor may be formed by a roller conveyor, overhead conveyor, or other conveyor system. The supply conveyor may supply the one or more objects either directly towards the loading device, or towards at least one orienting mechanism and / or system. The orienting mechanism may be configured for orienting one or more objects in a preferred orientation. For example, the orienting mechanism may be arranged to rotate suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks such that the loading device does not need to change an orientation of the object.

[0015] It is conceivable that the at least one container is positioned along the track. There may also be a plurality of containers, preferably all arranged along the track. At least an opening or access area of at least one container is accessible by the at least one loading device. The container or containers may also be arranged on a train, or on a transport conveyor, such as one of the types of conveyors described in relation to the supply conveyor. The transport container may also be arranged on an Automated Guided Vehicle.

[0016] The loading device may be configured to release an object from the carrying surface by a relative movement of the at least one loading plate and / or the at least one ejector. The relative movement in this respect may be understood as a movement of the loading plate with respect to the at least one ejector. Hence, one option is that the ejector moves, whilst the loading plays stays in place. A second option is that both the ejector and the loading plate move. In this second case, preferably the movements are in opposing directions. However, the latter is not required. Lastly, the ejector may remain in place, whilst the loading plate moves with respect to said ejector. In this last option, the ejector functions as a stationary ejector, in particular a stationary object and / or surface. Said stationary ejector can be understood as for example a limiting element or a stopping element for obstructing a movement of an object positioned on the loading plate, at least in one direction. All these possibilities have proven to be able to remove the object from the carrying surface. The loading device may be arranged for keeping the at least one ejector in the release position and / or an ejecting position, whilst moving the loading plate, preferably towards the frame. The ejecting position may be different with respect to the release position. Preferably, in the ejecting position a distance between the at least one ejector and the loading plate is smaller compared to when the ejector is in the release position. The at least one ejector may move from the release position to the ejecting position by a translation in horizontal and vertical direction. Preferably, the at least one ejector moves to the ejecting position after reaching the release position. The loading device may therefore be configured for moving the loading plate and keeping the ejector in the release position, for releasing the object into a container. Preferably, the relative movement of the loading plate with respect to the at least one retaining element and / or ejector is in the extension direction.

[0017] The ejector may be movable relative to the carrying surface, in particular relative to an object on said carrying surface, of the loading plate, such that the ejector allows for pushing the object off the carrying surface of the loading plate. Pushing, in this respect may be understood as an object resting on the carrying surface being in contact, directly or indirectly, with the ejector. Hence the carrying surface may be movable relative to the ejector such that the ejector pushes the object off the carrying surface of the loading plate when the loading plate is retracted, e.g., from the release position towards the receiving position.

[0018] Preferably, at least a portion of the carrying surface of the loading plate is substantially smooth. This may contribute to objects to be removed from said carrying surface more easily. It is generally not desired that a significant amount of force is required to move the object, such as a heavy suitcase, bag, and / or backpack. In order to reduce the required force, the carrying surface may be smooth. Smooth may be understood as the carrying surface being substantially free of protrusions. The carrying surface is preferably substantially flat. The carrying surface may be formed by the upper surface of the loading plate. Preferably said upper surface, and hence the carrying surface, is at least partially composed of a low-friction material, such as nylon, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), yet also Polyimide (PI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyoxymethylene (POM), and / or Polyester, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are suitable materials for providing a substantially smooth carrying surface. It is also imaginable that said upper surface and hence the carrying surface, is at least partially composed of metal, preferably sheet metal. Preferably, the upper surface and hence the carrying surface, is at least partially composed of steel, steel composition, and / or aluminum. In particular, the upper surface and hence the carrying surface, may be at least partially composed of untreated steel, such as S235JR, or stainless steel, such as 304. It is furthermore conceivable that the upper surface is provided with a coating. Preferably, said coating is a friction reducing coating for reducing a friction coefficient of the upper surface.

[0019] It is preferred that the loading plate is substantially free of moving parts, such as drive rolls, or belts or the like. These may cause parts of the objects such as suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks to get strangled up in the moving parts causing the loading device to be prevented from functioning and requiring service. Contrary to having a smooth surface, it may be conceivable that the at least one retaining element comprises at least one friction increased surface area. Preferably, the retaining element comprises a retaining surface, wherein the retaining surface of the retaining element facing towards the carrying surface of the loading plate, is configured for clamping an object to be loaded between the retaining element and the loading plate. At least a portion of the retaining surface may be formed by said friction increased and / or textured surface area. Said friction increased and / or textured surface area may be a portion of the retaining element, which is provided with one or more protrusions, for increasing a grip to retain an object, alternatively said friction increased surface area may be formed by a portion of material, such as a natural and / or synthetic rubber. This may allow for retaining the object to be transported. In particular if the loading plate, at least the carrying surface thereof, is substantially smooth. The ejector may comprise at least one push element for pushing an object from the carrying surface of the movable loading plate, preferably at least in the extension direction and / or perpendicular to the extension direction, in particular into the transport container. The push element may be a bar, preferably horizontally oriented. The push element may stretch along at least a portion of the width of the loading plate, preferably stretching the entire width. This may reduce the need for accurate control in order to push an object. This may make the loading device and hence the system more robust and therefore more reliable. The push element may also have a width which exceeds a width of the loading plate and / or loading device. The at least one ejector may be configured for pushing an object from the carrying surface of the movable plate in the extension direction, in particular due to a relative movement of the movable loading plate and the ejector. Relative movement in the extension direction may be in either way as explained before with respect to the relative movement.

[0020] Preferably, the ejector comprises at least one side pusher for pushing an object from the carrying surface of the movable plate in a direction at least partially perpendicular to the extension direction, preferably substantially perpendicular to the extension direction. This may provide the loading device with increased flexibility in terms of removing an object from the loading plate. Hence, in some instances, for example in a corner area of a transport container, movement of the loading plate and / or ejector may be compromised. In such a case, in order to achieve a desired release location of the object, such sideward movement of the side pusher may provide significant advantages. The side pusher may be movable in a direction at least partially perpendicular to the moving direction of the push element. By arranging the push element and side pusher to be movable at least partially perpendicular, a wide range of possible options is available for removing an object from the carrying surface of the loading device. In particular in a simple, reliable and robust manner. The side pusher may allow the at least one ejector to push an object from the carrying surface of the loading plate in a direction perpendicular to the extension direction. It is conceivable that the side pusher comprises at least one contact surface, which surface protrudes with respect to the push element, preferably in a direction facing away from the push element, in particular towards the transport container, for abutting against an object to be loaded. Preferably, the side pusher is displaceable between a retracted position and an extended position, preferably wherein the side pusher is protruding outwardly with respect to the push element. Preferably, the at least one contact surface is extendable and / or enlargeable. The latter may be achieved by allowing a movement of the side pusher in a direction at least partially parallel to the extension direction. Hence, the effective length of said side pusher may be extended. This may prevent that, upon pushing an object from the carrying surface, said object rotates. Preferably, the at least one side pusher comprises at least two contact surfaces, preferably wherein said contact surfaces are facing in opposite directions. The side pusher may be, preferably independently, movable with respect to the push element. The side pusher may push objects to either side of the carrying surface of the movable loading plate. This may provide maximum flexibility in terms of pushing an object from the carrying surface. Moreover, it may allow for removing an object irrespective of the preferred release location of the object to be loaded. In another embodiment, it is conceivable that the at least one side pusher is displaceable in a direction parallel to the moving direction of the push element and / or in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the push element. Preferably, wherein said contact surface is extendable and / or enlargeable. It is conceivable that the side pusher is telescopically extendable.

[0021] The movable loading plate may be translatable in at least three directions, said at least three directions comprise the extension direction, and two directions perpendicular to said extension direction. These at least three directions may also be referred to as a vertical direction, a width direction and a depth direction. Typically, the depth direction is referred to as the extension direction. The loading plate may be movable in the vertical direction with respect to the frame. This may provide for adjusting the height of the loading plate such that the height of the release position may be adjusted. The loading plate may also be movable width direction by a horizontal movement, preferably of the frame along the track. However, the horizontal movement may also be realized by allowing the loading plate to move in the horizontal direction with respect to the frame of the loading device. Moreover, said loading plate may be movable in depth direction, which is the extension direction, such that it can extend into a container to be loaded.

[0022] The retaining element and / or the ejector may be translatable in at least three directions, said at least three directions comprising the extension direction, and two directions perpendicular to said extension direction. These at least three directions may also be referred to as a vertical direction, a width direction, and a depth direction. Typically, the depth direction is referred to as the extension direction. The retaining element and / or the ejector may be movable in the vertical direction with respect to the frame. This may provide for adjusting the height of the retaining element and / or the ejector such for either clamping or releasing an object, or for ejecting an object. The retaining element and / or the ejector may also be movable width direction by horizontal movement, preferably wherein the horizontal movement is with respect to the frame of the loading device. The retaining element and / or the ejector may move relative to the loading plate within the frame in a width or horizontal direction. Moreover, said retaining element and / or the ejector may be movable in the depth direction, which is in the direction of the extension direction, such that it can extend into a container to be loaded. Preferably the retaining element and the ejector are independently movable with respect to the loading plate.

[0023] Optionally, the movable loading plate is, directly or indirectly, telescopically connected to the frame, in particular the frame of the loading device, preferably by a telescopic subframe, more preferably telescopically in the extension direction. Preferably the loading plate is at least partially telescopically extended in the release position. The telescopic connection of the loading plate allows the loading plate to move in the extension direction stably and accurately towards and away from the release position. Alternatively, the movable loading plate may be, directly or indirectly, connected to the frame by means of a scissor lift and / or a zip chain. Where in this application reference is made to a telescopic subframe, this may also be referred to this as a scissor lift and / or a zip chain.

[0024] Preferably, the loading device comprises at least one first subframe, wherein the at least one loading plate is connected to the first subframe, wherein said first subframe is preferably movably connected to the frame in at least a vertical direction, and wherein the at least one loading plate is movably, in particular telescopically, mounted to the at least one first subframe. This may, allow for more accurate and independent movements in both the vertical and extension direction. Optionally, the loading device comprises at least one second subframe, wherein said second subframe is preferably movably connected to the frame in at least a vertical direction, and wherein the at least one retaining element and / or the at least one ejector is movably, in particular telescopically, mounted to the at least one second subframe. The telescopic mounting of the loading plate to the first subframe may be realized by means of a telescopic subframe, which connects the loading plate to the first subframe. Similarly, the telescopic connection between the retaining element and / or retaining element and the second subframe may be established by means of a telescopic subframe. The first and second subframe may also allow for making the movements independent of each other. That is, the distance between the loading plate and the retaining element and / or ejector may be controlled solely or exclusively by the first and second subframe. The movement of the loading plate and the retaining element and / or ejector in the extension direction may be controlled solely or exclusively by the telescopic connections or telescopic subframes. The at least one retaining element and / or ejector may also be movably arranged in at least one horizontal direction, preferably perpendicular to the extension direction, to the second subframe. This may allow for controlling a mutual position of the retaining element and / or ejector with respect to the loading plate in the horizontal direction, i.e., the width direction. Optionally, the first subframe and second subframe are mutually integrated.

[0025] The retaining element and loading plate are movable relative to each other at least in a vertical direction, in particular such that the distance between the retaining element and the loading plate is adjustable. The loading plate and the retaining element are preferably separate parts of the loading device. This may allow the loading device to adjust the distance between said loading plate and the retaining element such that a wide variety of objects may be clamped or retained by the loading device.

[0026] It is conceivable that at least a portion of the ejector and at least a portion of the retaining element are, at least partly, integrated parts. It is imaginable that at least a portion of the retaining element and at least a portion of the ejector are substantially perpendicular to each other and optionally connected forming an integrated part. This allows for a more compact device through integration of two functions in one feature. This is especially advantageous since retaining of an object is, although mostly, only needed up to the release position. The retaining element may clamp an object as the loading device is moving the loading plate, and the retaining element, from the receiving position to the release position. Once the release position is reached, the loading device may lift the retaining element and as such the ejector, for allowing to move the ejector to a position which allows the ejector to remove the object from the loading device. The latter may be achieved according to one of the ways described in the application. For example, the retaining element and the ejector may be connected at their side edges.

[0027] The retaining element may comprise and / or may at least be partially formed by at least one retaining surface. Preferably, the carrying surface of the loading plate faces towards the retaining surface of the retaining element and optionally define at least a part of a 3D loading area. It is imaginable that the loading device further comprises at least one drive element for driving the movements of at least the movable loading plate and / or the ejector and / or a telescopic subframe, and wherein the at least one driving element is positioned outside of the 3D loading area. It is preferred that the 3D loading area is dynamically adjustable. The latter may be achieved by means of the movable arrangement of the loading plate and / or the retaining element. By arranging the driving elements, such as belts, motors, transmissions and the like, outside the 3D loading area, it may be prevented that loose parts of objects to be loaded get tangled into the loading device. It is in particular preferred that the 3D loading area is substantially free of driving elements and / or moving parts. It is conceivable that the 3D loading area is surrounded or bounded by one or more protection plates and / or a retaining surface and / or the carrying surface and / or a surface of the ejector, such that it is prevented that loose straps of objects, such as backpacks, get trapped in the loading device. The at least one loading plate may comprise one or more reinforcing elements. Said reinforcing element may increase the strength of the loading plate, which may allow heavy objects to be handled. The one or more reinforcing elements may at least partially be formed by a, preferably substantially hollow, beam. Said one or more reinforcing elements may be mounted, for example by means of one or more mounting elements such as bolts and / or screws, to a lower side of said loading plate. Preferably, the one or more mounting elements are at least partially accommodated inside the reinforcing element, preferably an accommodating space formed by the hollow beam. This may allow the mounting elements to be hidden from sight, which may also reduce the chances of straps of objects, such as backpacks, getting trapped behind and / or under the loading plate. It is conceivable that at least a portion of the loading plate, in particular at least one reinforcing element, is tapered or comprises a tapered profile. The tapered portion may, for example be provided on a lower side of said loading plate, in particular said reinforcing element. Said tapered portion may prevent loose straps of objects, such as backpacks, get trapped behind and / or under the loading plate. It is conceivable that this particular embodiment of the loading plate limits the risk of loose straps of objects to get trapped during movement from a release position to a receiving position and optionally during movement from a receiving position to a release position.

[0028] Optionally, the system comprises a releasing area, which may be at least partially adjacent to the track, wherein the releasing area comprises at least one discharge conveyor, for discharging one or more containers comprising loaded objects. Preferably, said discharge conveyor is substantially parallel to the at least one track. The discharge conveyor may be formed by the same type of conveying system as described in relation to the supply conveyor. Preferably, the track comprises at least one rail, wherein the frame of het loading device is configured to move along said rail. This allows for a relatively efficient movement of the loading device along the track.

[0029] Preferably, the system comprises at least one control unit, for controlling of relative movements of at least the at least one loading plate, the at least one retaining element and the at least one ejector. It is however also conceivable that the control unit is arranged for controlling a relative movement of the loading device with respect to a transport container and / or a supply conveyor. Preferably, the relative movements are controlled based on one or more sensors, in particular an input received from one or more sensors. The control unit may be a separate component of the system, yet it is also possible that the control unit is part of the loading device as such. The control unit may be configured for determining the releasing position and / or releasing location for each object to be loaded.

[0030] The system may further comprise at least one scan unit and / or scan section, such as a laser scan, for determining at least an orientation and / or size and / or weight and / or structure, e.g. hard or soft, of an object to be loaded. Preferably, said at least one scan unit and / or scan section on and / or along the supply conveyor for determining orientation and / or size and / or weight and / or structure of an object to be loaded that is supplied on said supply conveyor. It is also conceivable that the at least one scan unit and / or scan section may determine the number of objects, such as suitcases, on and / or along the supply conveyor. Moreover, it is also conceivable that that the at least one scan unit and / or scan section may determine one or more specifications of at least one, preferably two, more preferably all objects.

[0031] Preferably, the specifications may be derived from a label on the at least one object. It is conceivable that the label comprises information regarding for example destination and the like. This may allow the control system to take this information into account prior to placing the object in a container. Yet, it is also conceivable that the scan unit is formed by one or more cameras arranged in the system, such as on the loading device. Preferably the scan unit and / or scan section may be coupled to the control unit, if applied.

[0032] The system may further comprise an orienting mechanism, preferably located upstream of the loading device, wherein the orienting mechanism is arranged to orient and / or re-orient an object to be loaded, in particular prior to being loaded onto the at least one loading plate, preferably in a preferred orientation. Preferably, an orienting mechanism or orienting system, which may allow for orienting an object to be loaded into a desired orientation and / or predetermined orientation. Preferably, the desired orientation and / or predetermined orientation is determined by the at least one control unit. Preferably, the system comprises one or more detection units for detecting of a loading status of a transport container. In particular wherein the control unit is configured for determining a desired orientation and / or predetermined orientation based on a loading status received from the one or more detection units. The loading status may for example comprise information related to the total weight loaded into said transport container, an area of said container that is occupied, an area of said container that is available, or the like. The control unit may be configured to: determine if a weight and / or volume of an object to be loaded exceeds an available weight and / or volume in said transport container. If the weight and / or volume of said object to be loaded exceeds the available volume and / or weight in the transport container, the control unit may be configured for allocating a release area and / or release location in a different container, or to reject said object to be loaded, at least temporarily. It is conceivable that the orienting mechanism may rotate one or more suitcases, bags, and / or, backpacks based on information from the scan unit and / or scan section and / or control unit, if applied. It is also conceivable that the orientating mechanism may comprise at least one sensor and / or at least one encoder that may provide information and / or an input signal in order to orient one or more objects in a preferred orientation.

[0033] Preferably, the control unit is configured to determine a release location of the object to be loaded and / or a release location of the loading plate and / or an object to be loaded, in particular at least partially based on the orientation and / or size and / or weight and / or structure of an object to be loaded. Preferably determining of the release position is at least partially based on a release location for the object to be loaded.

[0034] The control unit may further be configured for rejecting an object, such that the object is not loaded into a transport container by the loading device. This may for example be required when a minimum size or volume is required for a transport container.

[0035] The present invention is further related to a loading device for loading luggage into a transport container, in particular for use in a system according to any of the previous claims, comprising at least one frame, at least one loading plate, wherein said loading plate is movable with respect to the at least one frame in at least one extension direction, comprising at least one carrying surface for carrying of at least one object to be loaded, wherein the movable loading plate is at least movable between a receiving position, for receiving of an object to be loaded; and a release position, for releasing of an object at a release location, at least one retaining element, preferably comprising a retaining surface, for retaining an object located on the at least one loading plate; at least one ejector, for removing an object from the carrying surface of the movable loading plate, in particular when the loading plate is at the release position, in particular into a container. All features and advantages thereof of the loading device as described in relation to the system according to the present invention also apply to the loading device as such.

[0036] The present invention will hereinafter be further elucidated based on the following non-limitative figures, wherein:

[0042] - Figure 7 depicts an perspective of an alternative embodiment of the supply conveyor.

[0043] In figure 1 , an overview of a system 100 for loading a transport container with a plurality of objects , in this particular embodiment a plurality of suitcases, bags, and / or backpacks is depicted. It is however conceivable that the system is loading other objects 106. Objects 106, such as suitcases, can be loaded in a transport container 107. It is conceivable that the objects 106 are supplied by a supply conveyor 104. The supply conveyor 104 may transport one or more objects 106 towards the orienting mechanism 103. It is conceivable that the supply conveyor 104 is positioned substantially parallel to the discharge conveyor 102 and / or transport containers 107. This allows the system to be compact, which is advantageous when the system has to be fit in an existing construction and / or building. Furthermore, the loading capacity of the system 100 can be expanded relatively easy, for example by extending the length of the supply conveyor 104, and optionally adding parallel to this length direction an additional transport container 107. It is also thinkable that the supply conveyor 104 is positioned substantially perpendicular to the discharge conveyor 102 and / or transport containers 107. In such an example, each of the transport containers 107 may be connected to at least one supply conveyor 104, wherein it is conceivable that more than one supply conveyors 104 are part of the system 100. The orienting mechanism 103 may be able to block objects 106. It is conceivable that this may occur for example physically or by means of a sensor and / or an encoder. After an object 106 is blocked, it may be subsequently loaded by the loading device 101 in a transport container 107. The orienting mechanism 103 may also be able to reject an object 106. When the orienting mechanism 103 rejects the object 106, the object 106 may not be loaded in the transport container 107 which is to be loaded by the loading device 101. In such an example the object 106 may be discharged to and subsequently be loaded in a transport container 107 that is located in a downstream direction of the supply conveyor 104. It is conceivable that the decision making of the orienting mechanism 103 is at least partially managed by a control unit 110. The control unit 110 may decide whether an object 106 can be blocked, and hence loaded into a transport container 107, or rejected. It is imaginable that the orienting mechanism 103 is communicatively connected to the control unit 110. Based on the information of, or input received from, the scan unit 105, the control unit 110 can determine in which transport container 107 an object has to be allocated, for example to a transport container 107 in a downstream direction of the supply conveyor 104. This allows the system to optimize the stacking patterns in the transport containers 107. This may also allow the system 100 to prevent that e.g., small objects are loaded into a transport container 107 which has openings through which the object 106 may fall. It is conceivable that a scan unit 105 is part of the system 100. The scan unit 105 may be configured to monitor at least the transport surface of the supply conveyor 122. In this respect the transport surface is typically the upper surface of the supply conveyor 122. The scan unit 105 may be directly or indirectly connected to the supply conveyor 104. It is also conceivable that the scan unit 105 is not directly or indirectly physically connected to the supply conveyor and / or other parts of the system 100. The scan unit 105 may be a unit that is physically separated, i.e., independent, from the other parts of the system 100, while monitoring objects 106, such as suitcases, that are supplied by for example a supply conveyor 104. It is also conceivable that the scan unit 105 comprises, or is at least partially formed by, a camera and / or camera system. It is also thinkable that the scan unit 105 comprises at least one (3D-)laser and / or at least one sensor. The scan unit 105 may gather and / or measure information of the objects 106 such as suitcases, for example the size, weight, structure (e.g. hard or soft), orientation. It is conceivable that the size and / or weight and / or structure may affect the stability of objects 106 that are stacked. The allocation of objects 106 may be based at least partially on the measured properties associated to the measured object 106. This may optimize the efficiency of the stacking the objects 106 in the transport containers 107. The decision making with regard to the allocation of objects 106 may be operated by the control unit 110. It is also conceivable that the system 100 comprises a track 108. The track may be substantially parallel to the supply conveyor 104 and / or discharge conveyor 102. However, the track 108 may also extend in a different direction. The loading device 101 may be movable along the track 108. This allows the loading device 101 to load different transport containers 107 simultaneously. This flexible manner of loading also enables to load the different transport containers 107 in an optimal manner, for example to allocate an object 106 with certain properties to a certain transport container 107. The properties of an object 106 may be measured by the scan unit 105. Additionally, the movement of the loading device 101 along the track 108 may also allow the loading device 101 to accurately position itself with respect to a transport container 107 to be loaded and / or with respect to the supply conveyor 104.

[0044] Figure 2 shows a detailed perspective of the loading device 101 according to a particular embodiment. The loading device 101 may comprise a frame 111. The frame 111 may provide the stability and strength to the loading device 101 that is needed for loading objects 106 into the transport containers 107. Furthermore, the frame 111 may allow, or provide for a movement in at least a vertical and / or at least a horizonal direction. The vertical direction may be substantially parallel to the longitudinal (i.e. , height) direction of the frame 111. The horizontal direction may be at least partially parallel to the direction of the track 108. It is conceivable that the frame 111 may comprise at least one first subframe 115 and / or at least one second subframe 116. The at least one first subframe 115 may be movably coupled to the frame 111. Yet, the at least one first subframe 115 may also be coupled to at least one loading plate 112. It is conceivable that the orienting mechanism and / or system 103 may supply objects 106 to the loading plate 112. The loading plate 112 may comprise a carrying surface 113 on which the objects 106 may be loaded. It is conceivable that the carrying surface 113 is located on the upper side of the loading plate 112. The carrying surface 113 is preferably substantially smooth, such that an object 106 may easily move on said carrying surface 113. The at least one second subframe 116 may be moveably mounted to the frame 111 of the loading device 101 . Preferably, the second subframe 116 is translatable along the frame 111. The second subframe 116 may comprises a retaining element 114 that may be movably mounted to the at least one second subframe 116. The retaining element 114 may comprise a retaining surface 119. It is conceivable that the retaining surface 119 is facing the loading plate 112. Preferably, the retaining element 114 is movable in at least an extension direction. The at least one first subframe 115 is at least movable in a vertical direction with respect to, or along with, the frame 111 of the loading device 101 . The at least one second subframe 116 is at least movable in a vertical direction with respect to, or along with, the frame 111 of the loading device 101 . Preferably, said first subframe 115 and second subframe 116 are independently movable. This may allow for increased flexibility in mutual positions. It is conceivable that the retaining element 114 and the loading plate 112 are movable relative to each other, for example in a vertical direction and / or a horizontal direction. This allows the loading device 101 to optimize clamping an object 106 based on for example the size of an object 106. This allows to reduce the risk to harm the objects 106 as a result of uncontrolled clamping, for example by exerting an excessive force on an object 106. It is also conceivable that the retaining element 114 or the loading plate 112 has a fixed position. However, it may also prevent objects 106 from falling from the loading plate 112. The movement of the at least one first subframe 115 and / or the at least one second subframe 116 may be driven by one or more driving elements 117. The driving elements 117 may comprise a motor. It is also conceivable that the driving elements 117 are actuated manually, for example in case of malfunctioning of a motor. The retaining surface 119 of the retaining element 114 may be facing towards the carrying surface 113 of the loading plate 112. The space 137 in between the retaining surface 119 and the carrying surface 113 may define at least a part of a 3D loading area 137. The 3D loading area 137 is dynamically adjustable. The 3D loading area 137 may depend at least partially on the position and / or distance of the retaining surface 119 with respect to the carrying surface 113 in a vertical direction. It is also conceivable that the 3D loading area 137 depends at least partially on the position and / or distance of the retaining surface 119 with respect to the carrying surface 113 in a horizontal direction. It is furthermore conceivable that the loading plate 112 is movable in a width direction with respect to the first subframe 115, preferably said width direction being parallel to the direction of the track 108. It is also conceivable that the retaining element 114 and ejector 118 are movable in a width with respect to the second subframe 116, for example by shifting along a rail within the second subframe 116. This may optionally affect the 3D loading area 137. It is preferred that the loading area is substantially free of moving and / or protruding elements. This may prevent parts of the objects 106, such as a strap of a backpack, from getting strangled within the loading device. In this example the loading device 101 is able to optimally position an object 106 with respect to the transport container 107. This may provide an optimal stacking pattern within the transport container 107. The loading device 101 does not necessarily have to move along the track 108 for loading of an object 106 in a transport container 107. The mutual movement of the retaining element 114 and ejector 118 and loading plate 112 may be sufficient to optimally stack the transport container 107. It is, however, also conceivable that the retaining element 114 and the ejector 118 may be independently movable from each other in at least a width direction . By using the relative and mutual movements of the loading plate 112 and retaining element 114 and ejector 118 the device may clamp objects 106 and guide said objects 106 from a receiving position towards a release position. It is conceivable that the loading device 101 can be positioned at any point along a track 108. The track may be substantially parallel to the supply conveyor 104 and / or discharge conveyor 102. The loading device 101 may be movable along the track 108. In one embodiment of the present invention, the track 108 may comprise at least one rail 109. The frame 111 is configured to move along the rail 109. The loading device 101 may comprises guiding wheels 136. The guiding wheels 136 may be slidably or movable mounted on the loading device 101 . The guiding wheels 136 may interact with the at least one rail 109. The guiding wheels may be driven by for example a motor or an actuator (not shown).

[0045] Figure 3a shows a detailed perspective of a first subframe 115 of the loading device 101. It is conceivable that the loading plate 112 is directly or indirectly telescopically connected by a first telescopic subframe 131 to the frame 111 or to the first subframe 115. It is, however, also conceivable that the loading plate 112 is directly or indirectly connected to the first subframe 115 and / or frame 111 without a first telescopic subframe 131 . The first telescopic subframe 131 may otherwise be referred to as a telescopic subframe 131 . The presence of a first telescopic subframe 131 allows to increase the reach of the loading plate 112 of the loading device 101 in the extension direction. This allows the loading device to reach further into a transport container 107 to be loaded. Further, the first telescopic subframe 131 allows the system 100, in particular the loading device 101 to be compact while providing a significant reach in the extension direction, which is advantageous when the system 100 has to be fit in existing constructions and / or buildings. Moreover, it also allows the loading device 101 to be compact during lateral horizontal movements along the transport containers 107. Due to the first telescopic subframe 131 the forces on the loading plate 112, for example due to the mass of the object 106 on the loading plate 112, can be more easily processed. As a result, the thickness of the loading plate 112 may decrease. This may achieve a limited drop height of an object 106 when an object 106 is released in the transport container 107. A limited drop height may increase the accuracy and also increase the flexibility in packaging options for positioning the object 106 in the transport container 107. Furthermore, the risk of damaging the object 106 may reduce when the drop height is limited. The first telescopic subframe 131 allows the loading plate 112 to move in an extension direction, which may also be referred to as a depth direction. It is also conceivable that the loading plate 112 can shift in a width direction being substantially parallel to the direction of the track 108 along which the frame 111 is movable. This may allow the loading device 101 to load objects 106 accurately in the transport container 107. It is conceivable that the loading device 101 may move along the track 108 in case a relatively large distance needs to be covered in order to load the transport container 107. It is conceivable that the loading device 101 remains in its initial position on the track 108 when a relatively small distance needs to be covered in order to load the transport container 107. In the latter case the loading plate 112 can shift in a width direction being substantially parallel to the direction of the track to be able to move said smaller distance to be covered. The first telescopic subframe 131 may be driven by an actuator 130. The actuator 130 may drive the first telescopic subframe 131 and the loading plate 112 into different positions, such as a position to receive objects 106 from the orienting mechanism 103 and / or supply conveyor or a position to release objects 106 in a transport container 107. It is also conceivable that the actuator 130 directly drives the loading plate 112 into different positions. Preferably, the actuator 130 is arranged below the loading plate 112. The loading plate 112 comprises at least one carrying surface 113, or is at least partially formed by said carrying surface 113. It is conceivable that the carrying surface 113 is located on the upper side of said loading plate 112. Preferably, the carrying surface 113 has a low resistance profile. This allows to speed up the process of for example receiving and releasing objects 106 from the carrying surface 113. The retaining element 114 allows to clamp an object 106. This may prevent an object 106 from sliding from the carrying surface 113. The first subframe 115 may comprise protection elements 132, which in this particular embodiment are formed by protection plates 132. The protection plates 132 may prevent that loose straps and the like of objects 106, such as backpacks, get trapped in the loading device 101 , for example by shielding or sealing elements, such as bolts, nuts, openings.

[0046] Figure 3b shows a detailed perspective of a second subframe 116 according to an embodiment of the loading device 101 . It is conceivable that the at least one retaining element 114 and ejector 118 are movably, preferably telescopically, mounted to the at least one second subframe 116. Preferably, the retaining element 114 and ejector 118 are movably mounted to the second subframe 116 by a second telescopic subframe 125. It is, however, also conceivable that the retaining element 114 and ejector 118 are directly or indirectly connected to the second subframe 116 and / or frame 111 without a second telescopic subframe 125. The second telescopic subframe 125 may otherwise be referred to as a telescopic subframe 125. In the non-limitative embodiment shown in this figure the retaining element 114 and ejector 118 are integrated parts, hence forming a single unit. However, it is also conceivable that the retaining element 114 and the ejector 118 may be independent parts, and as such movable independently from each other. The retaining element 114 may comprise a retaining surface 119. It is conceivable that the retaining surface 119 may be in direct or indirect contact to an object 106 when the retaining element 114 is activated to clamp an object 106 between the retaining surface 114 and the carrying surface 113. The ejector 118 is configured to remove an object 106 from the carrying surface 113 of the movable loading plate 112. Preferably, the ejector 118 removes the object 106 from the carrying surface 113 when the loading plate 112 is located within a transport container 107. The ejector 118 may comprise a push element 138. It is conceivable that the push element 138 can push an object 106 from the carrying surface 113 of the loading plate 112 in the extension direction and / or in a width direction being substantially parallel to the direction of the track 108. The ejector 118 may also comprise at least one side pusher 120. The side pusher 120 is configured to push an object 106 from the carrying surface, in particular in a width direction, which width direction may be substantially parallel to the direction of the track 108. The side pusher 120 may slide along a rail 129 which may enable the side pusher 120 to shift in a width direction being substantially parallel to the direction of the track 108. The movement in a width direction of the side pusher 120 may allow the loading device 101 to be more flexible in removing objects from the carrying surface 113 of the loading plate 112. This may allow the loading device 101 to accurately position an object 106 before loading the object 106 in the transport container 107. This may improve the stacking pattern of the objects 106 within the transport containers 107. It is conceivable that the side pusher 120 comprises at least one contact surface 121. The contact surface 121 may abut against an object 106 to be loaded. It is also conceivable the side pusher comprises a second contact surface (not shown). It is imaginable that the contact surface 121 of the side pusher 120 can be adjustable. The size of the contact surface 121 can be adjusted based on for example specific properties of an object 106, such as size or weight. The surface 121 of the side pusher may be adjusted by a movement of the side pusher 120 in the extension direction. That is, the side pusher may not only be movable in a width direction, but alternatively or additionally in the depth or extension direction.

[0047] Figure 4a shows a detailed perspective of the loading device 101 receiving an object 106 within the system 100 according to the present invention. It is conceivable that the orienting mechanism 103 blocks an object 106 with a blocking mechanism 133. The blocking mechanism 133 may be movable in a vertical direction. In case the orienting mechanism 103 needs to reject an object 106, the blocking mechanism 133 may lift in a vertical direction to allow said object 106 to pass through. This allows the object to be discharged to and subsequently be loaded in a transport container 107 that is located in a downstream direction of the supply conveyor 104. In case the orienting mechanism 103 blocks an object 106, a pushing mechanism 135 may push the object 106 from the transport surface of the supply conveyor 122 to the loading device 101 , preferably onto the loading plate 112 of the loading device 101 , more preferably on the carrying surface 113 of the loading plate 112. In a non-limitative embodiment of the present invention, it is conceivable that the pushing mechanism 135 is movably connected to the orienting mechanism 103, for example by a rail 134. In one embodiment of the present invention, it is conceivable that the pushing mechanism 135 is movable between an initial position and a loading position. After loading an object 106 to the loading device, the pushing mechanism 135 may return to its initial position. In order to be able to load objects 106 of different sizes, the second subframe 116 comprising the retaining element 114 is moved to an upper position. This upper position prevents the second subframe 116 or the retaining element 114 from obstructing the pushing mechanism 135. Instead of an automated pushing mechanism 135, it is also conceivable that the loading device 101 is manually loaded. Moreover, it is also possible that the loading device 101 receives an object directly from a supply conveyor 104 which is oriented substantially perpendicular to the track 108.

[0048] Figure 4b shows a detailed perspective of the loading device 101 clamping an object 106. When an object 106 is pushed on the carrying surface 113, it is conceivable that the object 106 gets clamped between the carrying surface 113 and the retaining surface 119 of the retaining element 114. This may be achieved by moving the retaining element 114 towards the loading plate 112 in order to clamp the object 106. This may prevent an object 106 from sliding from the carrying surface 113 during a movement towards the release position. It is, however, conceivable that the loading plate 112 moves towards the retaining element 114 or that the loading plate 112 and the retaining element 114 move relative to each other. In at least the latter two examples it may be decided by the control unit 110 which of the loading plate 112 or retaining element 114 is to move. This may be based for example on the height at which an object 106 is to be released.

[0049] Figure 4c shows a perspective view of the system 100 of the present invention. Here, the loading plate 112 of the loading device 101 is extended into a transport container 107. The loading plate is extended such that it is in the release position, for releasing the object 106 on said loading plate 112 into a release position. Preferably, in the release position as shown in this figure, the loading plate 112 is in the lowest possible position with respect to the transport container 107. That is, a possible drop of the object 106 is reduced to a minimum. The height, i.e. the vertical position, may be adjusted by means of the first subframe 115 of the loading device. The loading device may remove the object 106 that is resting on the loading plate 112 by means of the ejector 118. This may either be achieved by pushing, e.g. in the direction towards the transport container 107, the ejector, in particular the push element 138 thereof. This may cause the object 106 to slide over the loading plate 112 and eventually fall, hence release, from the loading plate into the release location. Alternatively, it is conceivable to retract the loading plate 112. This eventually causes the object 106 that rests on said loading plate 112 to be essentially unsupported and to drop into the container 107. Figure 4d shows a perspective view of the system 100 wherein the loading plate 112 is partially retracted. In this figure, the object 106 is about to be released and land in the release location in the transport container 107. In order to prevent the object 107 from rotating or making another undesired movement during removing thereof, the side pusher 120 may maintain the orientation of the object 106 during removal from the loading plate 112.

[0050] Figure 5 shows an embodiment of the side pusher 120 in an extended position. The side pusher 120 is displaceable between a retracted position and an extended position. The at least one side pusher 120 is displaceable in a direction parallel to the moving direction of the push element and / or in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the push element. When the side pusher is in an extended position, the at least one contact surface 121 of the side pusher is allowed to engage an object 106 such that it may be prevented that, upon pushing an object 106 from the carrying surface 113, an object 106 rotates.

[0051] Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the orienting mechanism 103. The orienting mechanism 103 may comprise at least one engaging mechanism 140. The at least one engaging mechanism 140 is configured for engaging an object 106, preferably wherein the engaging mechanism 140 comprises at least one pushing mechanism 135 and / or at least one engaging element 141. Optionally, the blocking mechanism 133 may be part of the engaging element 141 . The engaging surface 142 of the engaging element 141 may be facing substantially perpendicular towards the carrying surface 113 of the loading plate 112 (not shown in figure 6). When more than one engaging elements 141 are applied, such as in Figure 6, the engaging elements 141 may operate independently with respect to each other. This allows to position one or more objects 106 more precisely, in particular with respect to the loading plate 112. The pushing mechanism 135 and / or engaging element 141 are movable in a direction parallel to the moving direction of the conveyor 122 and / or in a direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the conveyor 122.

[0052] Said engaging element 141 is at least translatable in a vertical and / or horizontal direction. This allows the one or more objects 106 on the supply conveyor 122 to be positioned into at least one engaging area of the engaging mechanism 140. Based on the information of the scan unit 105, at least the engaging mechanism 140 can adjust the position of an object 106 with respect to the loading plate 122 and / or the position of an object 106 in the transport container 107. Figure 7 depicts an alternative embodiment of the conveyor 122. The conveyor 122 is at least partially bi-directionally movable, wherein at least a first part 142 of the conveyor 122 is movable in a direction opposite to at least a second part 143 of the conveyor 122. In an alternative embodiment, at least a first part 142 of the conveyor 122 is movable at a different speed level with respect to second part 143 of the conveyor 122. Said first and second part are configured to co-act for positioning an object 106 in a desired orientation, when an object 106 is in contact with at least the first and second part 142, 143 of the conveyor 122. The conveyor 122 further comprises at least one abutment element 144 configured for abuttingly engaging at least one object 106. At least a part of the at least one abutment element 144 is actuatable between a retracted position and an extended position. The abutment element 144, in particular when in the extended position, contributes to position an object 106 on the conveyor 122. The abutment element 144 may comprise at least one protrusible element 145, which is adjustable between a retracted position and an extended position.

[0053] The above-described inventive concepts are illustrated by several illustrative embodiments. It is conceivable that individual inventive concepts, including inventive details, may be applied without, in so doing, also applying other details of the described example. It is not necessary to elaborate on examples of all conceivable combinations of the above-described inventive concepts, as a person skilled in the art will understand numerous inventive concepts can be (re)combined in order to arrive at a specific application and / or alternative embodiment.

[0054] The ordinal numbers used in this document, like “first”, “second”, and “third” are used only for identification purposes. Hence, the use of expressions like a “second” component, does therefore not necessarily require the co-presence of a “first” component. By "complementary" or “co-acting” components is meant that these components are configured to co-act with each other. However, to this end, these components do not necessarily have to have complementary forms. The verb “comprise” and conjugations thereof used in this patent publication are understood to mean not only “comprise”, but are also understood to mean the phrases “contain”, “substantially consist of”, “formed by” and conjugations thereof.
