AI Technical Summary
Existing wireless communication systems face challenges in efficiently managing power consumption during cell reselection processes, as waking up the main radio for measurement purposes increases power usage.
The implementation of a low power wake-up receiver (LP-WUR) in user equipment (UE) allows for monitoring of low-power synchronization signals and wake-up signals while the main radio is in a lower power state, enabling power-efficient cell reselection.
This approach reduces power consumption by allowing the UE to perform cell reselection tasks using the LP-WUR, thereby minimizing the need for the main radio to operate at higher power levels.

Abstract
Description
LOW POWER WAKE UP RECEIVER BASED CELL RESELECTIONCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] This Patent Cooperation Treaty patent application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 536,309, filed September 1, 2023, and titled “Low Power Wake Up Receiver Based Cell Reselection,” the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including systems in which a user equipment (UE) uses a low power wake-up receiver (LP-WUR) to monitor for a low-power synchronization signal (LP-SS), a low power wake-up signal (LP- WUS), or other type of signal transmitted by a network device.BACKGROUND
[0003] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a network device (e.g., a base station, a radio head, etc.) and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) long term evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G), 3GPP new radio (NR) (e.g., 5G), and IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as Wi-Fi®).
[0004] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a network device of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a UE. 3 GPP RANs can include, for example, global system for mobile communications (GSM), enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN), Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN), and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN).
[0005] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the network device and the UE. For example, the GERAN implementsGSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE), and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR). In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.
[0006] A network device used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E- UTRAN network device is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB). One example of an NG-RAN network device is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB).
[0007] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN). For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC), while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC).BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS

[0018] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with a network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic device.
[0019] FIG. 1 shows an example wireless communications system 100. The wireless communications system may include a UE 102 that is connected, over the air, to a network (e.g., a 3GPP network). The UE 102 may communicate with the network on one or more uplink (UL) channels and one or more downlink (DL) channels, and more particularly may communicate with one or more network devices of a RAN (e.g., network devices 104-1 and 104-2, which may take the form of one or more base stations, remote radio heads, etc.) on the one or more UL channels and DL channels. Depending on the capabilities of the UE 102 and the UE’s configuration by the network, the UE 102 may communicate with the one or more network devices 104-1, 104-2 simultaneously, contemporaneously (e.g., in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) mode), or sequentially (e.g., when handed over).
[0020] In some cases, the UE 102 may be connected to a first network device 104-1 in a radio resource control (RRC) connected mode state, and a second network device 104-2 may belong to a neighbor cell of the cell containing the first network device 104-1. For radio resource management (RRM) purposes (e.g., mobility management), the UE 102 may measure one or more signals transmitted by the second network device 104-2 (e.g., to determine whether the UE 102 should be handed over to the second network device 104-2 or communicate with both the first network device 104-1 and the second network device 104-2).
[0021] In some embodiments, the UE 102 may have a main radio (or transceiver) that can be used for RRM purposes and data / control reception / transmission, and a LP-WUR that is operable at a lower power level (e.g., much lower power level) than the main radio (e.g., in some cases, an order of magnitude or two less power than the main radio). As used herein, the main radio of the UE 102 can operate in a lower power state (e.g., a lower power than a normal (or higher) operating power state, or OFF state) while the LP-WUR operates (e.g., at the lower power level of the LP-WUR). The main radio awakening or being woken up refers to the main radio transitioning to or operating in the relatively higher power level of the normal (or higher) operating power state. The LP-WUR may support limited functionality, such as the monitoring / detection of a LP-SS, LP-WUS, or both, when the UE 102 is in an RRC inactive mode state or an RRC idle mode state with respect to a network device. As used herein, a “main”radio of UE 102 is a radio that would normally be used to facilitate the main or mission function(s) of the UE 102, for example voice communication, data transfer, sensing / reporting, or otherwise. In a fully operational state (e.g., higher power state, or ON state), the main radio may consume much more power than the LP-WUR, and possibly one or more orders of magnitude more power than the LP-WUR. Conventionally, the main radio is a cellular radio or 3GPP standards-based radio, but in other applications, scenarios or deployments, the main radio could additionally or alternatively be a Wi-Fi®-based radio, or other type of radio.
[0022] When the main radio is used for RRM purposes (e.g., when the UE 102 is in an RRC connected mode state), the measurement of a reference signal (RS) transmitted by a network device may be measured without a measurement gap (MG) if the RS (e.g., all or a portion of a synchronization signal block (SSB), such as one or more of a primary synchronization signal (PSS), a secondary synchronization signal (SSS), or a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) demodulation reference signal (DMRS)) is inside an active bandwidth part (BWP) of the UE 102, but may need to be measured in a measurement gap if the RS is outside an active BWP of the UE 102. When the RS is within an active BWP of the UE 102, the RS may be measured without a scheduling restriction if the RS and data / control reception / transmission of the main radio use a same numerology (e.g., a same subcarrier spacing (SCS) on the same carrier in a first frequency range (e.g., FR1)) and same receive (Rx) beam (e.g., in a second frequency range (e.g., FR2)). However, the RS may need to be measured with a scheduling restriction if the RS and data / control reception / transmission of the main radio use a mixed numerology and / or different Rx beams.
[0023] In some cases, the second network device 104-2 may transmit various reference signals including, for example, one or more of an SSB, a LP-SS, or a LP-WUS.
[0024] In one or more embodiments, the LP-SS is a synchronization signal that is used for time and / or frequency synchronization of the LP-WUR, including to aid reception of a LP-WUS. In some embodiment the synchronization signal is transmitted periodically (e.g., one or more times per a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle, or at some other periodic duty cycle, or according to another period). In some embodiments, the LP-SS is a sequence, for example similar to (e.g., of same design but different length) or the same (e.g., same sequence and length) as a PSS or an SSS, such as a single M sequence (e.g., of length 127), two different cyclic shifts of a single M sequence (e.g., of length 31), or a frequency-domain Zadhoff-Chu sequence (e.g., of length 63). In yet other embodiments, the LP-SS is a different design of reference signal and / or sequence. In some embodiments, the LP-SS carries one or more bits of information via the synchronization signal, or one or more signals transmitted with the synchronization signal.
[0025] The second network device 104-2 may transmit one or more LP-WUSs, to wake one or more UEs that are in an RRC inactive mode state or an RRC idle mode state with respect to the second network device 104-2. In one or more embodiments, the first network device 104-1 may be a serving cell for the UE 102, and the second network device 104-2 may be an LP wake up transmitter (LP-WUT) (e.g., either alone or in addition to being a serving cell for one or more UEs). In some deployments, the network (e.g., including the RAN) may provide a LP-WUS and / or LP-SS with a different coverage area than other reference signals that are used for RRM purposes (e.g., UE mobility), such as cell-specific reference signals, including SSBs. Conventionally, the UE 102 would measure, using a main radio (or transceiver) the SSB transmitted by the serving cells of the first network device 104-1 (e.g., a serving cell of UE 102) as well as one or more neighboring cells, such as the second network device 104-2, for RRM purposes. As such, the UE 102 would need to be awake (e.g., the transceiver operating in a higher power state, or ON state) to perform such measurements. However, if the UE 102 includes both a main radio (or transceiver) and a LP-WUR, the UE 102 may determine, when in the RRC inactive mode state or RRC idle mode state with respect to the main radio (or transceiver) to 1) use the LP-WUR to monitor for a LP-WUS transmitted by the first network device 104-1, and / or 2) also use the LP-WUR to measure the SSBs (or other cell-specific RS) transmitted by the first network device 104-1 and / or the second network device 104-2, for RRM purposes. However, because the coverage areas for the cell-specific references signals (e.g., SSBs) and corresponding serving cells, including the coverage area for signals transmitted by the first network device 104-1, are different from the coverage areas for the LP-WUS and / or LP-SS (transmitted by the second network device 104-2), the cell-specific RS of the first network device 104-1 cannot necessarily be used directly for RRM purposes by the UE 102 (e.g., for reselection from the first network device 104-1 to a neighboring serving cell). However, awakening the main radio for RRM purposes is undesirable, for example due to additional power consumption.
[0026] As further described herein, the UE 102 can operate with a main radio (or transceiver) that is in a lower power state. While the main radio is in the lower power state, the UE 102 monitors (listens, or otherwise is prepared to receive) and receives, via the LP-WUR, reference signals (e.g., LP-SS, LP-WUS) from one or more LP-WUTs (e.g., the second network device 104-2). The UE 102 performs a measurement procedure to determine a power measurement for the received reference signals. In some embodiments, the power measurement is a reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement. In other embodiments, the power measurement is a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) measurement. In yet other embodiments, the power measurement is a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) measurement. Someembodiments may use a combination of two or more of an RSRP, RSRP, or SINR, or another type of appropriate or desired power measurement.
[0027] The UE 102 then determines whether the power measurement of the reference signal satisfies a signal power condition for UE mobility. In some embodiments, different serving cells (e.g., including at least a serving cell of the first network device 104-1) are associated with different respective signal power ranges. For example, serving cells of different network devices may be farther in distance from the LP-WUT, such that different power measurements can be attributed to different serving cells.
[0028] If the signal power condition is satisfied, in one or more embodiments, the UE 102 uses the power measurements as inputs to a UE mobility procedure and determines mobility based on the power measurements being within a particular range of power measurement values. In some embodiments, the UE 102 uses the power measurements being within a particular range of power measurement values to determine whether to wake up the main radio (or transceiver) so that the main radio can be used to perform measurements for RRM purposes (e.g., to measure SSBs of serving cells for UE mobility). In other embodiments, the UE 102 uses a variation in the power measurement values to determine whether to wake up the main radio so that the main radio can be used to perform measurements for RRM purposes.
[0029] In some deployments, the UE 102 can receive reference signals from the second network device 104-2 and one or more additional network devices, for example if the UE 102 is at an intersection or overlap of coverage areas for such reference signals. In one or more embodiments, in addition to or as an alternative to the signal power conditions described herein, the UE 102 may use a difference (or delta) between a power measurement associated with one LP-WUT and a power measurement associated with a different LP-WUT to determine whether the signal power condition is satisfied.
[0030] If the signal power condition fails to be satisfied, for example because the power measurements indicate that the UE 102 has not moved out of the current serving cell, then the UE 102 may maintain the transceiver in the lower power state (e.g., and continue to listen for reference signals transmitted by LP-WUTs, such as second network device 104-2).
[0031] FIG. 2 shows an example wireless communications system 200. The wireless communications system 200 includes a UE 230 that is connected, over the air, to a network (e.g., a 3GPP network). Wireless communications system 200 includes at least a first network device 204, second network device 206, third network device 208, and fourth network device 202. In some embodiments, the UE 230 may be an example of a UE 102.
[0032] First network device 204, second network device 206, and / or third network device 208 may be examples of a first network device 104-1 . First network device 204 provides network communication resources to UEs (e.g., RRC-connected UEs transmitting on UL resources to the network or receiving on DL resources from the network) within a coverage area 226 corresponding to a first serving cell (CELLI). Second network device 206 provides network communication resources to UEs within a coverage area 224 corresponding to a second serving cell (CELL2). Third network device 208 provides network communication resources to UEs within a coverage area 222 corresponding to a third serving cell (CELL3). Coverage area 224 may overlap at least a portion of coverage area 226, and coverage area 222 may overlap at least a portion of coverage area 224.
[0033] Fourth network device 202 may be an example of a second network device 104-2. Fourth network device 202 transmits signaling associated with LP-WUR operation for UEs within a coverage area 232, including associated reference signals (e.g., LP-SS or the LP-WUS). Coverage area 232 may include (geographically encompass, cover, encircle) coverage area 222, coverage area 224, and coverage area 226.
[0034] In one or more embodiments, ranges for power measurements (e.g., one or more of an RSRP, RSRQ, or SINR) are used to determine UE mobility. The network may configure the UE 230 (e.g., and other UEs within coverage area 232) with a set of power measurement values and corresponding serving cells. In some embodiments, a first range 220 (RANGE0) corresponds to a range between zero and a first power measurement value 214 (e.g., RSRP1), a second range 218 (RANGE 1) corresponds to a range between the first power measurement value 214 and a second power measurement value 212 (e.g., RSRP2), and a third range 216 (RANGE2) corresponds to a range between the second power measurement value 212 and a third power measurement value 210 (e.g., RSRP3). The first power measurement value 214 may be greater than the second power measurement value 212, and the second power measurement value 212 may be greater than the third power measurement value 210 (e.g., RSRP1 > RSRP2 > RSRP3).
[0035] In one or more embodiments, the UE 230 is configured with the ranges (e.g., at least the first range 220, the second range 218, and the third range 216) for power measurements by the network. In some embodiments, the fourth network device 202 (e.g., a LP-WUT) transmits configuration signaling to the UE 230 (e.g., via system information, such as a master information block (MIB) or a system information block (SIB), radio resource control (RRC) signaling, or other control signaling) that indicates the correspondence between the set of power measurement values and the serving cells. In other embodiments, one or more of the first network device 204, second network device 206, and / or third network device 208 may transmit such configurationsignaling to the UE 230. In yet other embodiments, the UE 230 may obtain the correspondence information via another suitable signaling.
[0036] Although RSRP is used for the one or more embodiments illustrated for wireless communications system 200, in other embodiments RSRQ, SINR, other measurements (e.g., power measurements), or a combination of these, may also be used for reference signals transmitted by a LP-WUT (e.g., including fourth network device 202) consistent with the techniques described herein.
[0037] In one or more embodiments, the UE 230 may be physically within coverage area 224. The UE 230 uses the LP-WUR to take measurements of the reference signals transmitted by (from) the fourth network device 202. The UE 230 receives the reference signals via the LP- WUR, determines the power measurement, and compares the power measurement against a signal power condition. In one or more embodiments, the signal power condition is if the power measurement falls within a signal power range (and in which range) (e.g., the first range 220, the second range 218, or the third range 216). Based on whether the power measurement falls within the range, the UE 230 determines whether to perform a UE mobility operation. For example, in one or more embodiments, the UE 230 determines that the range has changed (e.g., UE 230 has moved 234 from the second range 218 into the third range 216, as illustrated for wireless communications system 200), and UE 230 then performs a cell reselection procedure. The cell reselection procedure is an example of a UE mobility procedure.
[0038] In one or more embodiments, the UE 230 can, while the main radio (or transceiver) is operating in the lower power state, receive reference signals via the LP-WUR, determine whether the power measurement satisfies the signal power condition, and determine whether to perform the UE mobility procedure (e.g., cell reselection). In one or more embodiments, the lower power state for the transceiver is that the transceiver of the UE 230 is operating according to a lower than normal operating power. In some embodiments, the lower power state is that the transceiver is OFF (in an OFF state).
[0039] In some embodiments, the fourth network device 202 transmits the reference signals (e.g., LP-SS and / or LP-WUS) directionally (e.g., using beamforming), such that a single one of the serving cells (e.g., CELLI, CELL2, or CELL3) corresponds to a single signal power range, and thus the UE 230 can identify that it is within a geographic location corresponding to a single serving cell.
[0040] According to one or more embodiments, the signal power ranges (e.g., a set of signal power ranges including the first range 220, the second range 218, and the third range 216) are used to determine whether to awaken the main radio of the UE 230. The network can configurethe boundary (threshold) for the signal power ranges. When the UE 230 determines that the power measurement of the reference signal satisfies the signal power condition (e.g., the signal power range boundary is crossed, such that the power measurement falls in a different range), the LP-WUR of the UE 230 (e.g., or a processor of the UE 230 in communication with the LP-WUR of the UE 230) provides an indication to the main radio of the UE 230 for the main radio to wake up (e.g., exit a lower power state, or OFF state, and enter or otherwise transition to a higher power state, or ON state).
[0041] In one or more embodiments, once the main radio of the UE 230 is woken up, the main radio is used to perform a cell reselection procedure, which can include on or more of cell determine, synchronization, or measurement using the main radio based on convention (e.g., legacy) reference signals (e.g., SSBs) transmitted by one or more network devices corresponding to one or more serving cells (e.g., from first network device 204, second network device 206, or third network device 208).
[0042] Tn some embodiments, the network configures the UE 230 with an association (correspondence, mapping) between different serving cells and signal power ranges, as further described herein, and the UE 230 can detect the serving cells associated with one of the ranges. In other embodiments, the network does not configure the UE 230 (or otherwise provide to the UE 230) the association between different serving cells and signal power ranges, and the UE 230 performs a blind detection procedure to detect serving cells.
[0043] FIG. 3 shows an example wireless communications system 300. The wireless communications system 300 includes a UE 330 that is connected, over the air, to a network (e.g., a 3GPP network). In some embodiments, the UE 330 may be an example of a UE 102 or a UE 230.
[0044] Wireless communications system 300 includes at least a first network device 308 with associated coverage area 326 (CELLI), a second network device 306 with associated coverage area 324 (CELL2), a third network device 304 with associated coverage area 322 (CELL3), a fourth network device 332 with associated coverage area 334 (CELL4), a fifth network device 342 with associated coverage area 344 (CELL5), and sixth network device 302 with associated coverage area 340 (e.g., a coverage area for the transmission of references signals (e.g., LP-SS and / or LP-WUS) by a LP-WUT). Coverage area 340 may include (geographically encompass, cover, encircle) coverage area 322, coverage area 324, coverage area 326, coverage area 334, and coverage area 344.
[0045] In one or more embodiments, the reference signals transmitted by the network are omni-directionally transmitted, or otherwise transmitted in a manner such that multiple servingcells may correspond to or be identified as corresponding to a same signal power range. For example, the reference signals may be transmitted omni-directionally, or transmitted using a relatively broad beamforming that covers are area larger than multiple smaller serving cells.
[0046] In some embodiments, a first range 320 (RANGEO) corresponds to the range between zero and a first power measurement value 314 (e.g., RSRP1). The first range 320 corresponds to the coverage area 326 (CELLI). A second range 318 (RANGE1) corresponds to the range between the first power measurement value 314 and a second power measurement value 312 (e.g., RSRP2). The second range 318 corresponds to at least both the coverage area 324 (CELL2) and the coverage area 334 (CELL4). A third range 316 (RANGE2) corresponds to the range between the second power measurement value 312 and a third power measurement value 310 (e.g., RSRP3). The third range 316 corresponds to at least both the coverage area 322 (CELL3) and the coverage area 344 (CELLS). The first power measurement value 314 is greater than the second power measurement value 312, and the second power measurement value 312 is greater than the third power measurement value 310 (e.g., RSRP1 > RSRP2 > RSRP3).
[0047] According to one or more embodiments, each range can determine multiple cells (e.g., RANGE1 can have CELL2 and CELL4). As such, CELL2 and CELL4 can be a first cell group, and CELL3 and CELL5 can be a second cell group. UE 330 can determine cell group to cell group reselection by detecting the range change. For example, UE 330 can detect a move 346 (change) from the second range 318 (corresponding to the first cell group) to the third range 316 (corresponding to the second cell group), as illustrated for wireless communications system 300. As a result, according to one or more embodiments, when the UE 330 needs waking up of the main radio (or transceiver) later, UE 330 can only synchronize to the serving cells in the second cell group (e.g., CELL2 and CELL4).
[0048] According to one or more embodiments, the range change includes a power variation threshold as an example of the signal power condition, and the power variation threshold is satisfied prior to the UE 330 determining to perform the UE mobility operation (e.g., providing an indication to the main radio to awaken to perform sell reselection). In one or more embodiments, the power variation threshold may be a difference between power measurement values (e.g., RSRP1 minus RSRP2). In some embodiments, the UE 330 determines a power measurement value, and once the power variation threshold is satisfied (e.g., the power measurement value changes by at least RSRP1 minus RSRP2), the UE 330 determines to perform the UE mobility operation.
[0049] FIG. 4 shows an example wireless communications system 400. The wireless communications system 400 includes a UE 406 that is connected, over the air, to a network (e.g.,a 3GPP network). In some embodiments, the UE 406 may be an example of a UE 102, a UE 230, or a UE 330.
[0050] Wireless communications system 400 includes at least a first network device 404 associated with a coverage area 424 for reference signals (e.g., one or both of LP-WUS or EPSS) that are transmitted by the first network device 404 (e.g., a LP-WUS or LP-SS). Coverage area 424 includes (geographically covers, encompasses) coverage area 410 associated with a first serving cell (CELLI), coverage area 412 associated with a second serving cell (CELL2), and coverage area 414 associated with a third serving cell (CELL3). Reference signals (e.g., one or both of a LP-SS or LP-WUS) transmitted by the first network device 404 may be associated with a power measurement value 430 (e.g., RSRP1-1) at or near an edge (boundary, limit) of coverage area 410. Similarly, reference signals transmitted by the first network device 404 may be associated with a power measurement value 432 (e.g., RSRP1-2), a power measurement value 434 (e.g., RSRP1-3), a power measurement value 436 (e.g., RSRP1-4), and a power measurement value 438 (e.g., RSRP1-5) at or near an edge (boundary, limit) of coverage area 412, coverage area 414, coverage area 420, coverage area 418, and coverage area 416, respectively.
[0051] Wireless communications system 400 also includes at least a second network device 402 associated with a coverage area 422 for reference signals that are transmitted by the second network device 402 (e.g., one or both of LP-WUS or LP-SS). Coverage area 422 includes (geographically covers, encompasses) coverage area 416 associated with a fourth serving cell (CELL4), coverage area 418 associated with a fifth serving cell (CELL5), and coverage area 420 associated with a sixth serving cell (CELL6). Reference signals (e.g., one or both of a LP-SS or LP-WUS) transmitted by the second network device 402 may be associated with a power measurement value 440 (e.g., RSRP2-1) at or near an edge (boundary, limit) of coverage area 416. Similarly, reference signals transmitted by the second network device 402 may be associated with a power measurement value 442 (e.g., RSRP2-2), a power measurement value 444 (e.g., RSRP2-3), a power measurement value 446 (e.g., RSRP2-4), and a power measurement value 448 (e.g., RSRP2-5) at or near an edge (boundary, limit) of coverage area 418, coverage area 420, coverage area 414, and coverage area 412, respectively.
[0052] In some embodiments or deployments, the UE 406 may be or operate in a lower power state (e.g., main radio in a lower power state) and listening (monitoring, prepared to receive) for LP-WUS using a LP-WUR, while the UE 406 is located in or moving around in or near an intersection of coverage areas between two different LP-WUT (e.g., two different networkdevices transmitting signals such as LP-WUS compatible with LP-WUR operation). The UE 406 may therefore receive different reference signals from different LP-WUTs.
[0053] According to one or more embodiments, the UE 406 use signal power ranges to determine UE mobility. For example, the UE 406 may receive reference signals from the first network device 404 and determine that the UE 406 is within the coverage area 414. The UE 406 may then take no action or otherwise determine not to perform any UE mobility operation, for example, because the UE 406 previously established an RRC connection or other communication link with a network device serving the serving cell associated with coverage area 414 (and thus the signal power range from the power measurement value 432 (e.g., RSRP1-2) to the power measurement value 434 (e.g., RSRP1-3). At a different time, UE 406 may move 408 to another area corresponding to being within the coverage area 420. The UE 406 can determine that the move has occurred by measuring receiving reference signals from the first network device 404, from the second network device 402, or both, and determine that the power measurement of the reference signal(s) is associated with coverage area 420 because it is within the signal power range from the power measurement value 436 (e.g., RSRP1-4) to the power measurement value 434 (e.g., RSRP1-3) (if the reference signal is from the first network device 404) or because it is within the signal power range from the power measurement value 442 (e.g., RSRP2-2) to the power measurement value 444 (e.g., RSRP2-3) (if the reference signal is from the second network device 402). The UE 406 may then determine to perform a UE mobility operation.
[0054] In one or more embodiments, the UE 406 is configured with the set of ranges for power measurements by the network, including a first set of signal power ranges and associated serving cells for the first network device 404 and a second set of signal power ranges and associated serving cells for the second network device 402 via any suitable control signaling, as further described herein (e.g., from a serving cell, a LP-WUT, or other network device of a RAN, such as wireless communications system 400).
[0055] In one or more embodiments, as further described herein, the UE 406 (operating in or near an intersection of coverages areas of different LP-WUTs) can use the power measurements taken of the reference signals (e.g., LP-SS and / or LP-WUS) using the LP-WUR while the transceiver is in a lower power state to directly determine whether and how to perform a UE mobility operation. In some embodiments, the UE 406 (operating in or near an intersection of coverages areas of different LP-WUTs) can use the power measurements to determine, based on determining (detecting, identifying) a changes in signal power ranges, to wake the transceiver of the UE 406 to perform one or more operations for cell reselection suing the transceiver (or main radio), as further described herein. In some embodiments, the UE 406 (operating in or near anintersection of coverages areas of different LP-WUTs) can use the power measurements to determine, based on determining (detecting, identifying) that a power variation threshold has been satisfied, to wake the transceiver of the UE 406 to perform one or more operations for cell reselection using the transceiver (or main radio), as further described herein.
