The present invention provides a method for using Differentiated Services (DiffServ) to implement the IP packet classification and the marking of a Differential Service Code Point (DSCP) for the quality of service (QoS) in the wireless access network of the IP-based universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS). The present invention makes a classification to the data stream which is outgoing from the Iub interface at the Node B side, data stream which is outgoing from the Iub interface at the RNC side and data stream which is outgoing from the Iur interface at the RNC side according to the direction and the process of the respective data streams, and assigns and adjusts the priority of the data stream classified according to the principles for optimizing QoS and radio resources. When the network is congested, the data stream with a high level will have a higher priority than that with a lower level in queue and source occupancy, and the packet with a lower priority in the same queue is discarded. The DiffServ only contains a limited number of service levels and has little condition information, thus easy to be achieved and expanded.

A “Character-Level Font Linker” provides character-level linking of fonts via Unicode code-point to font mapping. A lookup table is used to identify glyph-level support for runs of particular characters on a Unicode code-point basis for relative to a set of available fonts. This lookup table enables automatic selection of one or more specific fonts for rendering one or more runs of characters comprising a text string. The lookup table is constructed offline by automatically evaluating glyphs comprising a set of common or default fonts. The table is then used for automatically selecting fonts for rendering text strings. Alternately, the lookup table is generated (or updated) locally to include some or all locally installed fonts. Finally, in another embodiment, if no supporting font is identified in the table for a particular character, the system automatically downloads the necessary glyph from one or more remote servers.

In some embodiments, network performance may be enhanced and optimized by providing QoS and acceleration engines with packet- or data-specific information. In addition to source and destination IP addresses and port numbers, packet- or data-specific information can include direction of traffic (client to host or server; server or host to client; or both), Virtual LAN (VLAN) ID, source or destination application or associated application, service class, ICA priority, type of service, differentiated service code point (DSCP), or other information. A method and system are disclosed for providing voice communication over a packetized network in which quality of service is guaranteed for voice communications. The method involves identifying reserved paths within the network, such as multi-protocol label switching paths. When a call is made, the identified reserved paths are evaluated to determine whether each contains sufficient bandwidth for the requested voice communication. The effective bandwidth for the call is estimated based on the codec used for the call, the service class parameter set from the caller's user profile, the time of day, and other parameters. A priority parameter is set for the requested voice communication, which may be based on the service class parameter, and is mapped to a specific Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) and 802.1p service class parameter. If the reserved path is determined to contain sufficient bandwidth, the requested voice communication is transmitted over the reserved path at the set priority. If the path does not contain sufficient bandwidth, an error message is sent to inform the caller that QoS can not be guaranteed for the call, and a decision is made whether the call should proceed nevertheless.

The using step can include reversing an ordering of a first set of unidirectional text characters in an input string and mapping the unidirectional text characters to right-to-left code points in a bi-directional language code page to produce a pseudo-translated string. Differentiated services for network traffic using weighted quality of service is provided. Network traffic is queued into separate per flow queues, and traffic is scheduled from the per flow queues into a group queue. Congestion management is performed on traffic in the group queue. Traffic is marked with priority values, and congestion management is performed based on the priority values. For example, traffic can be marked as “in contract” if it is within a contractual limit, and marked as “out of contract” if it is not within the contractual limit. Marking can also include classifying incoming traffic based on Differentiated Service Code Point. Higher priority traffic can be scheduled from the per flow queues in a strict priority over lower priority traffic. The lower priority traffic can be scheduled in a round robin manner.

The first encoder receives and codes M data bits in parallel in accordance with a first coding scheme to generate MR code bits. The second encoder receives and codes N code bits in parallel in accordance with a second coding scheme to generate coded data. M and N can be any values (e.g., M>=8, N>=4). As a result, consistent PHB is achieved throughout a network using abstract definitions of PHBs.

A system and method is provided for handling the collation of linguistic symbols of different languages that may have various types of compressions (e.g., from 2-to-1 to 8-to-1). A symbol table of the symbols identified as Unicode code points is generated, with each symbol tagged with a highest compression type of that symbol by sorting the compression tables of the various languages. During a sorting operation with respect to a given string, the tag of a symbol in the string is checked to identify the highest compression type of compressions beginning with that symbol, and the compression tables for the language with compression types equal or lower than the highest compression type of the symbol are searched using a binary search method to find a matching compression for the symbols in the string. A digital television transmitter and a method of coding main and enhanced data in the digital television transmitter are disclosed. In the digital television transmitter, a byte-symbol converter converts main and enhanced data packets into symbols, wherein at least one of the enhanced data packets may include data place holders for known data symbols. A known data generator generates a known data symbol. A symbol processor processes a first symbol outputted from the byte-symbol converter. Herein, the symbol processor may post-decode a first bit of the known data symbol and output the post-decoded bit and an initialization data bit when the first symbol is a symbol representing one of the place holders. Data traffic is conveyed through a node of a communications network. A parameter respecting the data traffic is assigned in an ingress interface of the node, and inserted into an intra-switch header attached to each packet. The data traffic, along with the intra-switch header are forwarded across the node to an egress interface.
