Method and apparatus for increasing performance of HTTP over long-latency links

The invention increases performance of HTTP over long-latency links by pre-fetching objects concurrently via aggregated and flow-controlled channels. An agent and gateway together assist a Web browser in fetching HTTP contents faster from Internet Web sites over long-latency data links. The gateway and the agent coordinate the fetching of selective embedded objects in such a way that an object is ready and available on a host platform before the resident browser requires it. The seemingly instantaneous availability of objects to a browser enables it to complete processing the object to request the next object without much wait. Without this instantaneous availability of an embedded object, a browser waits for its request and the corresponding response to traverse a long delay link.

Adaptive jitter buffer for internet telephony

In an improved system for receiving digital voice signals from a data network, a jitter buffer manager monitors packet arrival times, determines a time varying transit delay variation parameter and adaptively controls jitter buffer size in response to the variation parameter. A speed control module responds to a control signal from the jitter buffer manager by modifying the rate of data consumption from the jitter buffer, to compensate for changes in buffer size, preferably in a manner which maintains audio output with acceptable, natural human speech characteristics. Preferably, the manager also calculates average packet delay and controls the speed control module to adaptively align the jitter buffer's center with the average packet delay time.

Equalization and decision-directed loops with trellis demodulation in high definition TV

Improved decision feedback equalizer and decision directed timing recovery systems and methods suitable for use in connection with a dual mode QAM / VSB receiver system are disclosed. A trellis decoder operates in conjunction with a decision feedback equalizer circuit on trellis coded 8-VSB modulated signals. The trellis decoder includes a 4-state traceback memory circuit outputting a maximum likelihood decision as well as a number of intermediate decisions based upon the maximum likelihood sequence path. Any number of decisions, along the sequence, may be provided as an input signal to timing recovery system loops, with the particular decision along the sequence chosen on the basis of its delay through the trellis decoder. Variable delay circuitry is coupled to the other input of the timing recovery system loops in order to ensure that both input signals bear the same timestamp. Final decisions are output from the trellis decoder to a DFE in order to enhance the DFE's ability to operate in low SNR environments. A decision sequence estimation error signal is also generated and used to drive the tap updates of both the DFE and an FFE portion of the equalizer.

Compositions, and methods of using such compositions, useful for placement, for example injection, into the interior of human or animal eyes are provided. Such compositions include a therapeutic component, such as one or more corticosteroids, a biocompatible polymeric component, and a solvent component. The composition is in a fluid form before placement in the interior of an eye, and becomes less fluid after the composition is placed in the eye to form an extended or delayed release drug delivery element or system. The drug delivery element is formed by the dissipation of the solvent from the composition when the composition is placed in the interior of an eye. One example of a composition includes triamcinolone acetonide as a therapeutic agent. A method of treating an ophthalmic condition, or otherwise improving or enhancing vision of a patient, comprises placing the fluid composition in the interior of the eye. The method may be practiced by injecting the fluid composition into the interior of the eye.

Method and system for wiretapping of packet-based communications

A method and system for wiretapping a packet-based communication, such as a voice communication for instance. When a node in the normal path of packet-transmission between a source and destination receives packets of the communication, the node can conventionally route the packets to the intended destination. At the same time, a session manager can notify a wiretap server that the session is being established or is underway, and the wiretap server can then direct the node to bi-cast the packets of the communication to the wiretap server node. At the wiretap server, the packetized communication can be depacketized, and a TDM signal representing the communication can be sent via a conventional circuit-switch to a law enforcement agency or other authorized entity.

System and method for real-time jitter control and packet-loss concealment in an audio signal

An “adaptive audio playback controller” operates by decoding and reading received packets of an audio signal into a signal buffer. Samples of the decoded audio signal are then played out of the signal buffer according to the needs of a player device. Jitter control and packet loss concealment are accomplished by continuously analyzing buffer content in real-time, and determining whether to provide unmodified playback from the buffer contents, whether to compress buffer content, stretch buffer content, or whether to provide for packet loss concealment for overly delayed or lost packets as a function of buffer content. Further, the adaptive audio playback controller also determines where to stretch or compress particular frames or signal segments in the signal buffer, and how much to stretch or compress such segments in order to optimize perceived playback quality.

Quality of service controlled link adaptation

A quality of service profile for a mobile communication subscriber unit is determined and includes one or more mobile-specific desired quality of service parameters. Actual values for the service parameter(s) is(are) determined and fed back to a link quality controller to determine whether they are in an acceptable range or relationship with corresponding actual quality of service parameter values. A modulation and / or coding scheme for transmitting the information over the radio link is selected or adjusted based on whether the desired and actual quality of service parameters are in an acceptable range or acceptable relationship. A combined “desired” quality of service parameter using the first and second quality of service parameters (or more if desired) may be determined. A combined “actual” quality of service parameter using first and second actual quality service parameter values is determined. Those combined desired and actual quality of service parameters are compared to determine whether they are in an acceptable range or relationship. The modulation or coding scheme (or both) is (are) selected or adjusted based thereon.
