Abstract
Description
[0001] MIGRAINE ALLEVIATION DEVICE
[0002] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0003] This application claims the benefit of priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 536,078, filed September 1, 2023 the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety.
[0004] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The disclosure herein relates to a system for alleviating migraine headaches and many other diseases. In particular, a migraine alleviation device is described which helps to relieve migraine pain through interaction with Qi point energy spots on the head.
[0006] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0007] A migraine is a headache that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. It's often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so bad that it interferes with the patient’s daily activities.
[0008] According to a research, migraine affects an estimated more than 10% of people worldwide, occurs most often among people aged 20 to 50 years, and is about 3 times more common in women than in men.
[0009] Preventive medication is prescribed for frequent or debilitating migraine headaches. Common oral medications used to prevent migraine include certain blood pressure-lowering medications, antiseizure medications, and antidepressants. Home remedial measures are generally used to provide some relief to the patient. Several devices are also available that apply magnetic stimulation or electrical current to the head or body for migraine. These devices are associated with improvements in freedom from pain caused by acute migraine and a reduction of up to 2 migraine days per month in clinical trials. Fig. 1 illustrates a common remedy generally provided to the patient 100 by pressing on the pressure points (also known as Qi points) on the head 101 through hands 102. The interaction with these pressure points through hands provides an acupressure effect and helps to relieve the pain to some extent. However, this remedy through hands has limitations of seeking help of another person who can provide it for duration of time and may not be available in case of need. Thus, there is a need for a device or a system which can overcome the above- mentioned operative limitations. The invention described herein addresses the abovedescribed needs.

[0050] Reference is now made to Fig. 2 which illustrates a system 400 for alleviating migraine headaches comprising a hand module 406 and a head module 402 with direct transmission mechanism according to an aspect of the invention. The head module 402 is worn on the head by a patient 401 and the hand module 406 is held in hand 405 by a healer. The hand module 406 comprises a transmission mechanism for transmitting electromagnetic waves 407 towards the head module 402 which comprises a receiving mechanism for receiving the corresponding electromagnetic waves 407. In the direct transmission mechanism of Fig. 2, there is a direct communication between the hand module 406 and the head module 402.
[0051] In a particular embodiment of the invention, the transmission mechanism of the hand module 406 includes at least one of a Bluetooth transmitter, a frequency modulated signal transmitter and an amplitude modulated signal transmitter. The receiving mechanism of the head module 402 includes at least one of a Bluetooth receiver, a frequency modulated signal receiver and an amplitude modulated signal receiver. The details of the transmission mechanism and the receiving mechanism will be discussed later in the specification below.
[0052] In an alternative embodiment, the transmission between the hand module 406 and the head module 402 may be through Internet, a Bluetooth network, a Wired LAN, a Wireless LAN, a WiFi Network, a Zigbee Network, a Z-Wave Network or an Ethernet Network.
[0053] It is further noted that apart from migraines, other ailments and disorders may be at least partially alleviated by using the systems. For example, the system may be used to treat cancers, brain development disorders, mental disorders, connective tissue (collagen) disease, cerebral hemorrhage and sequelae, cerebral infarction and sequelae, high blood pressure, chemical sensitivity allergy and electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), vertigo (dizziness), Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, epilepsy and the like.
[0054] An alternative embodiment of the invention with remote transmission mechanism is illustrated in Fig. 3. The communication between the hand module 506 and the head module 502 is via a cellular phone network 508. Accordingly, a smart phone 509 application may manage relaying communication with the head module 502. Alternatively, the network 508 may be a cloud network for facilitating communication between the hand module 506 and the head module 502.
[0055] The head module 502 comprises a static unit 504 and a dynamic unit 503. The static unit 504 is worn by the patient 501 and rests on the head of the patient. The dynamic unit 503 is mounted on the static unit 504 and does not directly touch the head of the patient. The dynamic unit 503 comprises multiple receiver units mounted upon arms of the dynamic unit 503 configured to rotate about the static unit 504 such that the receiver units receive the electromagnetic radiation in around a circular path about and proximate to the head of the patient 501. The receiver units 603 mounted on the dynamic unit 602 of the head module 600 are illustrated in Fig. 4B. Here three receiver units 603 are shown to be mounted on the dynamic unit 602. Alternatively, the dynamic unit 602 may comprise lesser or more than three receiver units without limiting the scope of the invention. The receiver units are mounted on the static unit 601 through a supporting structure 604 which holds the dynamic unit 602 over the static unit 601 from the top of the head module 600.
[0056] The rotation of the receiver units 603 provides relief to the patient from migraine pain. The speed of rotation of the receiver units 603 depends upon the level of headache the patient is suffering. In particular embodiment, the speed of rotation of the receiver units 603 is typically 60-120 rpm. The rotation of the receiver units 603 provides acupressure effect on the Qi points present in the head of the patient and provides relief. The device illustrated in Fig. 6B is advantageous to provide adjustable Qi source as per requirements. The acupressure points are known from a map or a diagram as illustrated in Fig. 9. The pressure points are spots along the energy channels that can help free the flow of Qi. They are sometimes called acupoints. The static unit 601 makes the head unit stable on patient’s head and provides a smooth rotation of the dynamic unit 602 with minimal load on the head. The static unit 601 may be designed to provide a pressure pillow on the patient’s head to hold the head unit comfortably. The head module 600 may be worn by the patient in accordance with the acupressure map to get relieved of their ailments. For example, the head module 600 may be tilted or aligned to a certain degree on the patient’s head so that the target acupressure points are affected when the dynamic unit 602 is rotated. It is noted that where appropriate the headset may further include an Electroencephalography (EEG) sensor. The EEG sensor may be used to monitor brain activity and may further be used to indicate the progress of the treatment.
[0057] Optionally, the head module 600 may include a feedback system (not shown) to inform the healer with the hand module about the patient’s reaction to the treatment. The healer then adjusts the rotation speed of the dynamic unit 602 accordingly. For example, in case the patient is relieved of the migraine pain to some extent, the rotation speed of the dynamic unit 602 is reduced in time intervals and then stopped. In another scenario, if the patient’s headache increases through the treatment, the dynamic unit 602 is immediately stopped as it might be targeting wrong acupressure points.
[0058] Reference is now made to Fig. 5A, which illustrates a high-level system architecture 700 according to an aspect of the invention. The system 700 comprises a hand module 701, a static module 702 and a rotating or dynamic module 703. The hand module 701 comprises one or more of a frequency modulated FM signal transmitter 704, an amplitude modulated AM signal transmitter 705 and a Bluetooth transmitter 706. A power source 707 provides power to the FM, AM and Bluetooth transmitters. The power source 707 may be a direct AC power supply, a rechargeable battery, a wireless power or a USB charging port.
[0059] The receiving mechanism 708 of the static module 702 comprises one or more of a frequency modulated FM signal receiver, an amplitude modulated AM signal receiver and a Bluetooth receiver. The static module 702 also comprise a motor 709’ and one or more driver units 709” for rotating the dynamic unit 703. Various driver units may be used to rotate the dynamic unit as suit requirements, for example electromagnetic actuator coils mounted in the static unit and configured to drive permanent magnets in the dynamic unit, pressurized air jets used to push against fins in the dynamic unit, or vacuum tubes configured to drive the dynamic unit. A power source 710 provides power to the receiving mechanism 708 and the driver units 709”. The power source 710 may be a direct AC power supply, a rechargeable battery, a wireless power or a USB charging port.
[0060] In a particular embodiment of the present invention, the motor 709’ is a stepper motor which is a brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a number of steps. It moves one step at a time, and each step is of same size. The stepper motor 709’ can rotate in clockwise or counterclockwise direction. For example, the static module 702 may employ 28BYJ-48 stepper motor 709’ as illustrated in Fig. 7A. Stepper motors are made of internal coils that make the motor shaft move in steps in one direction or the other when current is applied to the coils in a specific way.
[0061] The stepper motor 709’ is connected to the stepper motor (SM) driver 709” configured to drive the stepper motor 709’ to rotate continuously by controlling the exact position without using a feedback system. The SM driver 709” provides variable current control as well as several step resolutions. The SM driver 709” can also provide higher output power to meet the needs of the motor 709’.
[0062] In a particular embodiment, ULN2003 motor driver can be used with the 28BYJ-48 stepper motor. The ULN2003 motor driver 709” is shown in Fig. 7B. The driver 709” comprises a motor connector 732 configured to connect with the stepper motor 709’. The input pins 733 are used to control the motor coil that makes the stepper motor move in a particular direction. The four LEDs 734 provide a visual interface of the coils’ state. The ON / OFF jumper switch 736 is used to power on and off the stepper motor.
[0063] The stepper motor 709’ is controlled by a microcontroller 709’”. In a particular embodiment of the present invention, the microcontroller is Arduino Nano ESP32 709”' as shown in Fig. 7C. The module supports both Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® making it an ideal device for the purpose.
[0064] The connection of stepper motor 709’ to the ESP32 microcontroller 709”’ via the ULN2003 motor driver 709” is shown in Fig. 7E. There are different ways to control the stepper motor 709’ with the microcontroller 709”’. In a preferred embodiment, the Arduino built-in Stepper.h library is used to control the stepper motor 709’. The library provides an easy way to move the motor by a defined number of steps. The other libraries such as “AccelStepper library” may also be used to control the stepper motor 709’ . Alternatively, the stepper motor 709’ may also be controlled remotely via a web server (not shown).
[0065] It should be noted that the above-mentioned embodiments of the static module 702 are exemplary in nature and should not limit the scope of the invention.
[0066] The dynamic unit or rotating unit 703 of the head module may include receiving units 711, 712 and 713 mounted upon multiple rotating arms. The receiving units 711, 712 and 713 comprise one or more of a frequency modulated FM signal receiver, an amplitude modulated AM signal receiver and a Bluetooth receiver. In a particular embodiment, the receiver units may be included in earphones, headphones or any head wearable device. The receiving units 711, 712 and 713 are controlled by a microcontroller 715. In a particular embodiment of the present invention, the microcontroller 715 is Arduino Nano ESP32 716 as shown in Fig. 7C. The module supports both Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® making it an ideal device for the purpose.
[0067] Optionally, the dynamic unit 703 may include an independent power source 714. In a particular embodiment, the power source 714 may be a Li-ion battery or WP / USB battery charger. Alternatively, a wireless power transmission 720 may be used to transfer power from the static unit 702 to a wireless power receiver 721 of the dynamic unit 703 as illustrated in Fig. 5B. The wireless power transmission system 720 may include a primary coil housed in the static unit 702 and a secondary coil in the wireless power receiver 721. The wireless power transmission system 720 may also provide a data communication channel between the static unit 702 and the dynamic unit 703 via which control signals may be communicated. The control signals may be used to control the amount of power transmitted to the dynamic unit 703, controlling the power provided to the receiving units 711, 712 and 713 for rotating speed control, monitor the faults in the driver units 709”, the transmission and receiving mechanisms.
[0068] The wireless power transmission system 800 between the power source or transmitter 720 of the static unit 702 and the wireless power receiver 721 of the dynamic unit 703 through inductive coupling is illustrated in Fig. 8. The power source or transmitter 720 (also known as charging pad or base station) comprises a coil of wire 722 which generates an electromagnetic field around it when electricity flows through this coil 722. The wireless power receiver 721 also comprises a coil 723 which is configured to pick up the energy from the electromagnetic field created by the transmitter coil 722. For wireless charging to work efficiently, the transmitter coil 722 and receiver coil 723 need to be close to each other and aligned properly. When the coils are close and aligned, the electromagnetic field created by the transmitter coil 722 induces a flow of electrical current in the receiver coil 723. This current can charge the receiver's 721 battery or power it directly.
[0069] In an alternative embodiment, the wireless charging between the power source or transmitter 720 of the static unit 702 and the wireless power receiver 721 of the dynamic unit 703 may comprise Resonant Inductive Coupling which involves tuning the transmitter and receiver coils to the same resonant frequency, allowing for more efficient power transfer over a greater distance.
[0070] The integrated wireless power transmission and the wireless data communication is supported by a few know technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC), Radio- Frequency Identification (RFID), Qi Wireless Charging and Data Transfer and Resonant Coupling and Data.
[0071] The healer or the patient can switch ON and OFF the Tx, Rx and Motor of the head module and the hand module as per requirement as shown in Fig. 6A. The AM, FM and BT transmitters and receivers may be controlled. Further, the motor rpm and number of rotations may be monitored via the hand module as illustrated in Fig. 6B. The number of rotations and rotation speed in rpm may be set by the healer before starting the operation. The rotation speed is adjusted in accordance with a predetermined time interval, for example, as suggested by a medical practitioner. Alternatively, the rotation speed is altered based on the feedback received from the patient as the treatment progresses. The power or battery level of all the modules may also be presented on the hand module. Alternatively, some or all of these parameters may be controlled and monitored through a mobile application available on the healer or patient’s communication device.
[0072] The patient and the healer may communicate through the mobile application installed on their smartphones to progress with the treatment. The patient may be asked to provide inputs at some time intervals of the treatment so that the healer adjusts the rotation speed accordingly. An exemplary feedback mechanism is shown in Fig. 6C where the patient is asked for the amount of relief she felt from the treatment. In accordance with the provided response, a feedback is provided to the healer on his smartphone as shown in Fig. 6D. On the basis of the feedback, the rotation speed of the dynamic unit is adjusted or stopped.
