Description

Battery pack and vehicle including same

[0001] The present invention relates to a battery pack and a vehicle including the same, and more particularly, to a battery pack capable of increasing the energy density of the battery pack by mounting a cell array structure in a pack case using the empty space between battery cells, and a vehicle including the same. This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0123394, filed September 15, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] Secondary batteries, which boast high electrical properties such as high energy density and easy applicability across a wide range of product categories, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) powered by electrical power sources. These batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source for environmental friendliness and energy efficiency, not only because they can dramatically reduce fossil fuel use, but also because they produce no byproducts from energy use.

[0003] Currently, widely used types of secondary batteries include lithium-ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and nickel-zinc batteries. The operating voltage of these unit secondary battery cells, i.e., unit battery cells, is approximately 2.5 V to 4.5 V. Therefore, when a higher output voltage is required, multiple battery cells are connected in series to form a battery pack. Furthermore, depending on the charge / discharge capacity required for the battery pack, a number of battery cells are connected in parallel to form a battery pack. Therefore, the number of battery cells included in the battery pack can be set in various ways depending on the required output voltage or charge / discharge capacity.

[0004] Meanwhile, lithium-ion secondary batteries can be classified into pouch-type secondary batteries, in which the electrode assembly is housed in a pouch made of aluminum laminate sheet, and can-type secondary batteries, in which the electrode assembly is housed in a metal can, depending on the shape of the battery case. In addition, can-type secondary batteries can be further classified into cylindrical batteries and square batteries, depending on the shape of the metal can.

[0005] In particular, cylindrical batteries are made by stacking or overlapping multiple battery cells mounted on themselves or in cartridges, etc., to provide high voltage and high current, and then electrically connecting them and packaging them in a pack case to be used as a battery module or battery pack.

[0006] In recent years, unit assemblies composed of multiple battery cells have been gradually increasing in size and weight, keeping pace with the trend toward higher pack density. Consequently, there is a growing need for improved mounting structures that securely attach these unit assemblies to the pack case. Specifically, the mounting structure and shape must be optimized for energy density (E / D) to maximize cell capacity per unit volume, while also improving assembly efficiency.

[0007] The present invention was created in consideration of the above problems, and the problem that the present invention seeks to solve is to provide a battery pack in which a protruding structure provided on the inner wall of a pack case and a sunken structure formed in an empty space between battery cells are mutually shaped and coupled, so that the mounting structure of the cell array structure with respect to the pack case can be optimized, and thus the energy density of the battery pack can be increased.

[0008] The technical problems to be solved by the present invention are not limited to the problems described above, and other problems not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description of the invention described below.

[0009] A battery pack according to the present invention may include a cell array structure including a plurality of battery cells; a pack case accommodating the cell array structure; and a fixing member provided at a facing portion of the cell array structure and the pack case to fix the cell array structure to the pack case through mutual shape coupling.

[0010] The above-mentioned fixed part may be configured such that a protruding structure provided in one of the cell array structure or the pack case and a recessed structure provided in the other of the cell array structure or the pack case are mutually shape-coupled.

[0011] The pack case includes a bottom plate arranged at the bottom of the cell array structure; and an outer side wall arranged on an outer edge of the bottom plate, and the fixing part may be provided on the outermost side portion of the cell array structure and the inner wall of the outer side wall.

[0012] The above-mentioned fixing member may include a fastening protrusion provided on one of the cell array structure or the outer side wall; and a fastening receiving groove provided on the other of the cell array structure or the outer side wall.

[0013] The above cell array structure includes a plurality of unit cell groups including the plurality of battery cells; and a side frame arranged between the plurality of unit cell groups, wherein the side frame includes a side structure interposed between the unit cell groups; and a side wall interposed between the pack case and the unit cell groups, and the fastening protrusion may be provided on the outer side wall, and the fastening receiving groove may be provided on the side wall.

[0014] The above-mentioned fastening receiving groove may include an inner recessed groove formed along the thickness direction of the side wall and formed on one surface of the side wall; and a mounting step provided to protrude from the inner recessed groove.

[0015] When the cell array structure is coupled to the pack case, the fastening protrusion can be supported by being seated on the mounting step.

[0016] The above-mentioned fastening protrusion may be provided so that the cross-section protrudes in a triangular shape.

[0017] The above inner recessed groove may be formed to have a triangular shape corresponding to the shape of the fastening protrusion.

[0018] The above inner recessed groove may be formed in an area where one battery cell does not interfere with another adjacent battery cell when viewing the cell array structure from above.

[0019] The above cell array structure can be mounted and supported on the pack case by sliding downward while the fastening protrusion is fitted into the fastening receiving groove.

[0020] A longitudinal fastening hole is formed in the above fastening protrusion and the above mounting step, and a fastening member can be coupled to the fastening hole.

[0021] Additionally, according to the present invention, a vehicle including the above-described battery pack can be provided.

[0022] According to one aspect of the present invention, a protruding structure provided on an inner wall of a pack case and a sunken structure formed in an empty space between battery cells are provided to be shape-coupled with each other, so that the mounting structure of the cell array structure with respect to the pack case can be optimized, and thus the energy density of the battery pack can be increased.

[0023] In addition, according to one aspect of the present invention, a strong bonding force is secured between the pack case and the cell array structure, so that the cell array structure, which is trending toward larger area and higher weight, can be firmly fixed on the pack case.

[0024] In addition, according to one aspect of the present invention, the recessed structure of the cell array structure can be mounted and coupled by slidingly coupling it to the protruding structure of the pack case, thereby improving pack assembly performance.

[0042]

[0043] FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view of the main components of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention with a top cover plate removed.

[0044] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a cell array structure (100) including a plurality of battery cells (112), a pack case (200) accommodating the cell array structure (100), a bus bar assembly (300) disposed on the upper portion of the cell array structure (100), a top cover plate (230), and a fixing member (400) provided at a facing portion of the cell array structure (100) and the pack case (200).

[0045] Referring primarily to FIG. 2, the cell array structure (100) may include a plurality of battery cells (112).

[0046] The plurality of battery cells (112) may be provided as secondary batteries, and may be cylindrical secondary batteries, pouch-shaped secondary batteries, or square secondary batteries. Hereinafter, the present embodiment will be described as being limited to the case where the plurality of battery cells (112) are provided as cylindrical secondary batteries. These battery cells (112) may be a plurality of cylindrical secondary batteries arranged horizontally and standing upright.

[0047] A plurality of battery cells (112) erected in this manner can be stacked horizontally or on a horizontal plane (XY plane) as shown in FIG. 2. A cooling structure may be interposed between each of the plurality of battery cells (112) or a structure (a configuration of a side frame (130) described below) that maintains the spacing between the battery cells (112) may be combined to form a cell array structure (100) which is a single assembly of battery cells (112).

[0048] Here, the cell array structure (100) may be a single assembly (structure) provided in a flat plate type with a predetermined thickness (e.g., the height of the battery cell (112)), which will be described in detail later. In addition, the cell array structure (100) may be expanded in area and the weight of the cell array structure (100) may also be increased. Such a single structure expanded in area can secure a predetermined structural rigidity. Accordingly, the cell array structure (100) may be a component of a cell to pack.

[0049] The pack case (200) can accommodate the cell array structure (100). As illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, the pack case (200) can include a bottom plate (210), an outer side wall (220) disposed on the edge of the bottom plate (210), a bus bar assembly (300) disposed on the upper portion of the cell array structure (100), and a top cover plate (230). Here, the cell array structure (100) can be accommodated in an internal space formed by the bottom plate (210), the outer side wall (220), and the top cover plate (230).

[0050] The bottom plate (210) may be placed at the bottom of the cell array structure (100). The bottom plate (210) may support the cell array structure (100) by facing it from below. The bottom plate (210) may include a convex portion (211) and a concave portion (212).

[0051] The above outer side wall (220) refers to a type of frame that has a predetermined height and is placed on the outer edge, and the bottom plate (210) can be combined at the bottom of the outer side wall (220). The outer side wall (220) is provided with a hollow interior, and a plurality of reinforcing bulkheads (221, see FIGS. 10 and 11) can be provided.

[0052] The above busbar assembly (300) is arranged on the upper portion of the cell array structure (100) to electrically connect the plurality of battery cells (112). In addition, the top cover plate (230) is arranged on the upper portion of the pack case (200) to cover the cell array structure (100) from the upper surface.

[0053]

[0054] Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the bottom plate and outer side wall in Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a top view of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a partially enlarged perspective view of the side frame in Fig. 2.

[0055] Referring to FIGS. 4 to 6 and the preceding FIG. 2, the fixing portion (400) may be provided at a facing portion of the cell array structure (100) and the pack case (200). The fixing portion (400) may be configured with a protruding structure provided in one of the cell array structure (100) or the pack case (200), and a recessed structure provided in the other of the cell array structure (100) or the pack case (200). In addition, the protruding structure and the recessed structure may be coupled by being shaped-coupled to each other.

[0056] The above-mentioned fixed part (400) may include a fastening protrusion (410) provided in one of the cell array structure (100) or the outer side wall (220), and a fastening receiving groove (420) provided in the other of the cell array structure (100) or the outer side wall (220).

[0057] For example, the fastening protrusion (410) may be provided on the inner wall of the outer side wall (220). The fastening protrusion (410) may be provided in the middle of the inner wall of the outer side wall (220). The fastening protrusion (410) is shaped and coupled with the fastening receiving groove (420), and may mount a portion of the fastening receiving groove (420).

[0058] And the fastening receiving groove (420) may be provided in the cell array structure (100). The fastening receiving groove (420) may be formed in the side wall (132), which is the outermost surface of the cell array structure (100), and may be formed at a position facing the fastening protrusion (410). In particular, the fastening receiving groove (420) may be formed in a region, so-called an empty space, in the cell array structure (100) where one battery cell (112) and another adjacent battery cell (112) are arranged side by side without interference.

[0059] Accordingly, when the cell array structure (100) is assembled to the pack case (200), the protruding structure (fastening protrusion (410) in this embodiment) provided on the inner wall of the outer side wall (220) and the recessed structure (fastening receiving groove (420) in this embodiment) formed in the empty space between the battery cells (112) can be mutually shaped and coupled.

[0060] According to the present embodiment, the protruding structure provided on the inner wall of the pack case (200) and the sunken structure formed in the empty space between the battery cells (112) are formed to be mutually shape-coupled, so that the mounting structure of the cell array structure (100) with respect to the pack case (200) can be optimized, and accordingly, the energy density of the battery pack (10) can be increased. This means that a separate mounting structure (such as an additionally protruding flange configuration) on the pack case (200) that was required to fix the existing cell array structure can be deleted, and the battery cells (112) can be accommodated in an amount equivalent to the space occupied by the deleted mounting structure. Alternatively, the capacity of the battery cells (112) per unit volume of the battery pack (10) can be increased.

[0061] In addition, the fastening receiving groove (420) is inserted into the fastening protrusion (410), and a part of the fastening receiving groove (420) is secured to the fastening protrusion (410) and is mounted and supported so that the pack case (200) and the cell array structure (100) can be strongly connected. This allows the cell array structure (100) to be more firmly fixed on the pack case (200) in response to the trend toward larger area and higher weight.

[0062]

[0063] Hereinafter, the cell array structure (100) and fixing part (400) according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described in more detail.

[0064] FIG. 7 is a drawing illustrating a cell array structure applied to a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 8 is a perspective view illustrating the combined components of FIG. 7, and FIG. 9 is a drawing illustrating an upper portion of a cell array structure accommodated in a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0065] Referring to FIGS. 7 to 9 and the preceding FIG. 2, the cell array structure (100) may include a plurality of unit cell groups (110) including the plurality of battery cells (112) and cooling tubes (115) attached to the plurality of battery cells (112), and a side frame (130) disposed between the plurality of unit cell groups (110).

[0066] The battery cell (112) may have a tab portion (113) and an upper surface (114) on the upper portion. The tab portion (113) may have a first polarity, and the upper surface (114) may have a second polarity. The tab portion (113) and the upper surface (114) may be electrically insulated from each other. The first polarity may be a positive pole of the battery cell (112), and the second polarity may be a negative pole of the battery cell (112). That is, the tab portion (113) may be a positive pole of the battery cell (112), and the upper surface (114) may be a negative pole of the battery cell (112). The tab portion (113) may be provided to protrude beyond the upper surface (114). Alternatively, the tab portion (113) may be configured not to protrude beyond the upper surface (114). For example, it may be a so-called tab-less structure in which the tab portion (113) is arranged on the same plane as the upper surface. Since the configurations of such battery cells (112) are widely known to those skilled in the art at the time of filing of the present invention, a more detailed description thereof is omitted herein.

[0067] A plurality of these battery cells (112) can be gathered together to form a single cell array (111). That is, a plurality of the cell arrays (111) can be arranged in a single row in the longitudinal direction (X-axis direction) of the battery pack (10). The number of battery cells (112) forming the cell array (111) is not limited.

[0068] In addition, the unit cell group (110) may include a cooling tube (115) between a pair of the cell arrays (111). That is, the unit cell group (110) may include a pair (two) of cell arrays (111) and a cooling tube (115) interposed between the pair of cell arrays (111). Here, the cooling tube (115) is a part that faces one surface of the cell array (111) and cools the battery cell (112). The cooling tube (115) may have a structure in which an empty space is provided and a cooling medium flows into the empty space, and is provided to face the outer surfaces of a plurality of battery cells (112), so that heat generated from the battery cells (112) can be directly transferred to the cooling medium.

[0069] Such a unit cell group (110) inevitably has a curved section created by having multiple battery cells (112) positioned on the outer surface. Accordingly, the cell array structure (100) may be provided with a side frame (130) that accommodates the curved section while maintaining and fixing the spacing between the multiple battery cells (112).

[0070] The side frame (130) may be provided between the unit cell group (110) and an adjacent unit cell group (110), or at the front end of the unit cell group (110). Specifically, the side frame (130) may include a side structure (131) interposed between the unit cell groups (110), and a side wall (132) interposed between the pack case (200) and the unit cell group (110).

[0071] The side structure (131) may be arranged between the pair of unit cell groups (110). The side structure (131) may be arranged between the unit cell groups (110) and the adjacent unit cell groups (110) to fix at least one pair of unit cell groups (110) and maintain a gap between the battery cells (112). As mainly illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3 , the side structure (131) may have a concave groove (131a) formed on one side and the other side in the longitudinal direction, respectively, corresponding to the outer surface shape of the unit cell groups (110). The inner curvature or number of the concave grooves (131a) may be determined according to the outer surface specifications of the unit cell groups (110) or battery cells (112) that are shape-coupled to the side structure (131).

[0072] A pair of side walls (132) may be arranged on both sides of the assembly direction (Y-axis direction) in which the unit cell group (110) and the side structure (131) are assembled. The side wall (132) may be provided at the outermost side in the width direction (X-axis direction) of the cell array structure (100). One side of the side wall (132) may be formed with the aforementioned concave groove (133) to accommodate one side of the unit cell group (110), while the other side (opposite side) may be formed flat to face the outer side wall (220) of the pack case (200). Accordingly, the cell array structure (100) and the outer side wall (220) may face each other, and no unnecessary gap is formed.

[0073] In this way, a plurality of unit cell groups (110) and a plurality of side structures (131) and side walls (132) can be assembled to form a single cell array structure (100). The cell array structure (100) of this configuration can be a structure in which structural rigidity is secured without a separate module case.

[0074] Specifically, the side frame (130) can be arranged between a plurality of battery cells (112) within the cell array structure (100) or on one side of the cell array (111) to fix and support the plurality of battery cells (112). In addition, the side frame (130) can be attached to the plurality of battery cells (112) to form a single structure as the cell array structure (100), and can be made larger in area and heavier than before.

[0075]

[0076] Referring to FIG. 8 and FIGS. 4 to 6 above, the fixing member (400) may include a fastening protrusion (410) provided on one of the outer side walls (220) and a fastening receiving groove (420) provided on the cell array structure (100).

[0077] The above-mentioned fastening protrusion (410) is provided on the inner wall of the outer side wall (220), and may be provided in the central region in the thickness direction of the outer side wall (220). In addition, the fastening protrusion (410) may be provided so that its cross-section protrudes in a triangular shape. The fastening protrusion (410) has a fastening hole (416) formed in the longitudinal direction, and a fastening member (430) may be coupled to the fastening hole (416).

[0078] The above-mentioned fastening receiving groove (420) may be provided along the thickness direction of the side wall (132), and may include an inner recessed groove (421) formed on one surface of the side wall (132), and a mounting step (425) provided to protrude from the inner recessed groove (421).

[0079] The inner recessed groove (421) may be formed to be recessed into a triangular shape corresponding to the shape of the fastening protrusion (410). That is, the inner recessed groove (421) may be formed to be recessed into a triangular shape with the upper vertex of the triangle facing the thickness direction of the side wall (132). In addition, the inner recessed groove (421) may be formed continuously from the upper to the lower end of the side wall (132) in the thickness direction of the side wall (132).

[0080] The inner recessed groove (421) may be formed in an area where one battery cell (112) and another adjacent battery cell (112) are arranged side by side when the cell array structure (100) is viewed from above. That is, the inner recessed groove (421) may be formed in an empty space, which may be referred to as a buffer space, between the battery cells (112) and the adjacent battery cells (112). Accordingly, it may be advantageous in terms of energy density compared to a structure in which a separate additional mounting space is separately added.

[0081] The above mounting step (425) may be provided in the middle region of the inner recessed groove (421). The mounting step (425) may be provided to protrude outward from the triangular recessed structure of the inner recessed groove (421). The mounting step (425) may be seated on the upper surface of the fastening protrusion (410) to mount and support the cell array structure (100) to the pack case (200). A fastening hole (426) may be formed in the longitudinal direction in the mounting step (425).

[0082] According to this embodiment, the protruding structure provided on the inner wall of the outer side wall (220) and the sunken structure formed in the empty space between the battery cells (112) are mutually shaped and the mounting structure of the cell array structure (100) with respect to the pack case (200) can be optimized, thereby increasing the energy density of the battery pack (10).

[0083] In addition, according to the present embodiment, a strong bonding force is secured between the pack case (200) and the cell array structure (100), so that the cell array structure (100), which is trending toward larger areas and heavier weights, can be firmly fixed on the pack case (200). Compared to the conventional case, the cell array structure (100) can be firmly supported by the fixing member (400), making it robust against vibration or external impact.

[0084] In addition, the recessed structure of the cell array structure (100) can be mounted and combined by slidingly connecting it to the protruding structure of the pack case (200), thereby improving pack assembly.

[0085] Additionally, as the cell array structure (100) is firmly fixed to the pack case (200), problems such as detachment or short circuit of electrical connection lines that may occur due to deformation, such as twisting of the cell array structure (100) itself, or warping, displacement, etc. due to external impact can be significantly reduced, and the risk of cracks or damage at the mounting point between the cell array structure (100) and the pack case (200) can also be reduced.

[0086]

[0087] Below, the combining process is explained.

[0088] FIG. 10 is a cutaway perspective view taken along line A-A' of FIG. 9, and FIG. 11 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0089] The pack case (200) is placed and the cell array structure (100) is moved downward from the upper side.

[0090] As the fastening projection (410) is fitted into the fastening receiving groove (420), the cell array structure (100) slides downward.

[0091] The above mounting step (425) may be provided to protrude outwardly in one section from the inner recessed groove (421). Accordingly, when the cell array structure (100) slides downward and is coupled to the pack case (200), the mounting step (425) is secured to the fastening protrusion (410).

[0092] As shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, longitudinal fastening holes (416, 426) are formed in the fastening protrusion (410) and the mounting step (425), respectively, and fastening members (430) are coupled to the fastening holes (416, 426).

[0093] Accordingly, the protruding structure provided on the inner wall of the outer side wall (220) and the sunken structure formed in the empty space between the battery cells (112) are mutually shaped and the mounting structure of the cell array structure (100) with respect to the pack case (200) can be optimized, thereby increasing the energy density of the battery pack (10).
