Abstract
Description
Composition for polymerization of high refractive index resin, high refractive index resin and article containing the same
[0001] The present specification relates to a composition for polymerizing a high refractive index resin, a high refractive index resin, and an article comprising the same.
[0002] This specification claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0120955, filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on September 12, 2023, and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2024-0124019, filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office on September 11, 2024, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0003] High-refractive-index materials exhibit exceptional photon refractive power, representing a dense medium for photon transmission. Glass has traditionally been used as a high-refractive-index material, but it suffers from low safety and high specific gravity. Therefore, the development of transparent, soft polymer-based high-refractive-index materials is urgently needed.
[0004] The high refractive index resin, which is an example of the high refractive index material, can be used in optical members that require an anti-reflection effect, a light-scattering effect, or a light-extraction effect, and for example, can be used in optical plastic lenses; high-precision lenses for recording optical disks such as CDs or DVDs; prisms; optical fibers; light guide plates; optical adhesives or pressure-sensitive adhesives; encapsulating materials for optical semiconductors; or functional materials applied to PDPs (Plasma Display Panels) or LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), such as anti-reflection films, light-scattering films, viewing angle-enhancing films, brightness-enhancing films, or optical filters. In addition, the high refractive index resin can also be used as an additive for preventing deterioration of plastics, a cosmetic additive, or a vehicle window glass.
[0005] Additionally, the higher the refractive index of an optical material, the thinner the optical lens required to achieve the same level of correction. Consequently, a higher refractive index of an optical material enables the production of thinner and lighter lenses, enabling the miniaturization of various devices in which the lenses are used. High-refractive-index materials offer a wider range of lens designs, and their utility is steadily increasing.
[0006] Therefore, active research is being conducted on high-refractive-index materials that can achieve excellent performance while having a thin thickness suitable for use in small electronic devices.

[0205] In this specification, the weight average molecular weight (Mw) of the high refractive index resin can be measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) using a polystyrene standard (PS standard) using an Agilent 1200 series. At this time, the molecular weights (g / mol) of polystyrene standard products are 9 types: 2,000 / 10,000 / 30,000 / 70,000 / 200,000 / 700,000 / 2,000,000 / 4,000,000 / 10,000,000.

[0209] The above Abbe number is specifically the refractive index (n) at wavelengths D (587 nm), F (486 nm), and C (656 nm) at 25 ℃. D , n F , n C ) can be measured respectively and the Abbe number can be obtained by the calculation formula below.
[0210] Abbe number = (n D - 1) / (n F - n C )
[0211] The above refractive index can be measured using a prism coupler method, for example, SPA-3DR from SAIRON technology, but is not limited thereto.
[0212] Using a prism coupler, the refractive index can be calculated by measuring the change in the amount of light reflected from a sample of the high-refractive-index resin, which is made by placing a slight glass on a 200°C heating plate and flattening the resin. When the manufactured sample is brought into contact with a prism and a laser is incident on the prism, most of the light is totally reflected, but when a specific incident angle and conditions are satisfied, an evanescent field is generated at the interface, causing light to couple. By measuring the angle at which the intensity of the light detected by the detector rapidly decreases due to coupling, the prism coupler can automatically calculate the refractive index of the film from parameters related to the polarization mode of the light and the refractive indices of the prism and the substrate.
[0213] According to one embodiment of the present specification, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the high refractive index resin may be 160°C or higher, 165°C or higher, 170°C or higher, 175°C or higher, 180°C or higher, 182°C or higher, 184°C or higher, or 185°C or higher, and may be 200°C or lower, 198°C or lower, 196°C or lower, 195°C or lower, or 194°C or lower. When the high refractive index resin satisfies the glass transition temperature range, it has excellent heat resistance and injection properties.
[0214] In the present specification, the glass transition temperature (Tg) can be measured using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Specifically, the glass transition temperature can be measured from a graph obtained by heating 5.5 mg to 8.5 mg of the polycarbonate resin sample to 270°C under a nitrogen atmosphere, then heating at a heating rate of 10°C during the second heating after cooling.
[0215] In addition, another embodiment of the present disclosure provides an article comprising the high refractive index resin. The article may be, but is not limited to, a coating material, a curable material, a lens material, an optical substrate material, or the like.

However, the embodiments described herein may be modified in various ways, and the scope of the present application is not limited to the embodiments described below. The embodiments of the present application are provided to more fully explain the present specification to those of average skill in the art.
[0218]
[0219] <Manufacturing Example 1> Manufacturing of a composition for polymerizing a high refractive index resin
[0220] A composition for polymerizing a high refractive resin was prepared using the monomer composition described in Table 1 below, and then mixed with 30 g of xylene to prepare a solution for polymerizing a high refractive resin.
[0221] Specifically, the monomers for polymerizing high refractive index resin were mixed in the mol% shown in Table 1 below based on 1 mol of the total monomers.

[0223] The structures of the compounds used as the above monomers are as follows.
[0224]
[0225]
[0226] <Manufacturing Example 2> Manufacturing of high-refractive resin powder
[0227] The high refractive index resin polymerization composition solution prepared in the above Manufacturing Example 1 was dissolved at 80°C in a nitrogen atmosphere, then the temperature was raised to 120°C, and then the ABCN solution was added dropwise and reacted for 20 hours.
[0228] The above ABCN solution was prepared by mixing 0.1 mol% of ABCN (1,1'-Azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile)) and 30 g of xylene based on 1 mol of the total monomer for polymerizing the high refractive resin.
[0229] After the reaction was completed, xylene was added to the reactor, diluted to 10 to 20 wt%, precipitated in methanol, and filtered to obtain a high-refractive resin.
[0230] The obtained high-refractive-index resin was vacuum-dried in a vacuum oven at 80°C for 24 hours to prepare a high-refractive-index resin powder.
[0231]
[0232] <Experimental Example> Evaluation of High Refractive Index Resin Characteristics
[0233] (1) Number average molecular weight (Mn), weight average molecular weight (Mw) and molecular weight distribution (PDI)
[0234] The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the above high-refractive-index resin sample were confirmed through gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and a thermogram was obtained using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the thermal properties.
[0235] The molecular weight through gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was measured at 40°C by dissolving the sample in tetrahydrofuran (THF, stabilized without BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)) as a solvent and injecting the solution prepared by filtering it through a syringe filter and dissolving it in tetrahydrofuran at a concentration of 1.0 mg / 1 ml, and obtaining the results, which are shown in Table 2 below. A Waters RI detector was used and two Agilent PLgel MIXED-B columns were used.
[0236] (2) Refractive index (RI) and Abbe number
[0237] The refractive index measurement can be confirmed from the above high refractive index resin sample, and the result value according to the wavelength of light was obtained using a prism coupler.
[0238] After the above sample was placed in close contact with the prism of the prism coupler, light of a specific wavelength was incident on the sample through the prism. Then, the incident angle at which the light resonated was measured, and the refractive index was measured from this, and the Sellmeier Coefficient, which minimizes the error value, was calculated and substituted into Sellmeier's equation, and the refractive index at the wavelength of D (587 nm) was confirmed.
[0239] Specifically, the refractive index was measured at a wavelength of 587 nm, and the Abbe number was obtained by measuring the refractive indices (nD, nF, nC) at wavelengths D (587 nm), F (486 nm), and C (656 nm) respectively and calculating the Abbe number using the formula below, which is listed in Table 2 below.
[0240] Abbe number = (nD-1) / (nF - nC)
[0241] (3) Glass transition temperature (Tg)
[0242] To determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resin, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was measured. 5.5 mg to 8.5 mg of the resin sample was heated to 270°C under N2 flow, cooled, and then heated a second time at a heating rate of 10°C. The glass transition temperature (Tg) was determined from the graph obtained by scanning, and the results are shown in Table 2 below.

[0244] Looking at the results in Table 2 above, it can be confirmed that the refractive index of the high refractive resin polymerized with the high refractive resin polymerization composition of the present invention is excellent.
[0245] Specifically, the refractive indices of Examples 1 and 2 were 1.56 or higher, which was higher than that of the comparative example group, and the molecular weight was also confirmed to be within the range for optimal fluidity and processability. In addition, it can be seen that the composition for polymerizing a high refractive index resin of the present invention has excellent heat resistance and injection properties by having an Abbe number and a glass transition temperature within an appropriate range, and can exhibit effects of low dispersion and high clarity when applied to a molded product. That is, in the case of a high refractive index resin manufactured using the composition for polymerizing a high refractive index resin of the present invention, a small optical material having excellent optical properties and a thin thickness can be provided.
[0246] In the case of Comparative Example 1, a resin was manufactured by polymerizing only the first compound of Chemical Formula 1, and polymerization was not possible because the molecular weight was 1,000 or less. In other words, it was confirmed that a resin composed only of units derived from the first compound could not be manufactured.
[0247] In Comparative Examples 2 and 3, it was confirmed that the resins prepared by polymerizing a composition containing two or one of the third compounds of Chemical Formula 3, but not the first compound of Chemical Formula 1, had lower refractive indices than the Example group. Specifically, it was found that Comparative Examples 2 and 3 did not exhibit excellent birefringence characteristics because they did not contain the first unit of the present invention.
