Description

HAIR STYLING COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE (CMC) VARIANT(S), AND PROCESS FOR PREPARING THE SAMEFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a hair styling composition comprising carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) variant(s), particularly to a hair spray composition and process for preparing the same.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Hair sprays traditionally have been used at the end of the styling process to fix the hair style in place and protect it from the elements such as humidity and wind. As the styling market and consumer behavior evolves, hair sprays are used as both finishing and working sprays. Finishing sprays are designed to be used as the last step in the styling process, spraying it on hair to hold the hair style in place, and protect it in humid / windy conditions, essentially freezing the hair style in place. These sprays are quick drying, and make hair less flexible, restricting the natural movement of hair. Often these hair sprays coat the hair with polymers that give a stiff, tacky feel to the hair. Working sprays are designed to be used as the hair style is created, and as such, they offer greater manageability, brushability and flexibility during styling. Working sprays have more water, with longer drying times to allow consumers to customize, texturize and create the hair style they desire. Ideal hair sprays (i) have good hold, (ii) show good retention of hair curls, (iii) be easily removed upon shampooing, (iv) be less sticky in nature and (v) and do not have visible residue or flaking on the hair fiber. Hair sprays typically come in aerosol form, but there are nonaerosol pump sprays as well. The challenge with polymers used in aerosol hair sprays is that the polymers need to be compatible and stable in presence of propellants and be soluble in alcohol and water. Synthetic polymers are widely used for their outstanding hold and humidity resistance, as well as propellant and solvent compatibility in aerosol formulations. While providing the desired benefits, these polymers do not fit the sustainability criteria put forward by governmental and no- govemmental entities. As such, there is increasing pressure on manufacturers of hair sprays to provide formulations which meet the expected benefits, while using nature-derived, sustainable ingredients. As consumers are looking for environmentally friendly and sustainable products, the hair spray segment is struggling to offer nature-derived, sustainable alternatives to syntheticpolymers. Many nature-derived polymers with the desired sustainability and biodegradability profiles are difficult to incorporate into hair spray formulations, due to restriction on their natural solubility and compatibility with solvents and propellants. Viscosity and the degree of substitution (DS) of polymers in solutions determine their functionality. One such preferred choice of polymer for hair styling applications is carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

[0003] US Patent No. 4,525,585 assigned to Diacel Chemical Industries Ltd. discloses sodium carboxymethyl cellulose with average degree of substitution of 0.4 to 1.6.

[0004] PCT Publication WO2022 / 216789A1 assigned to ISP Investments LLC discloses aqueous personal care compositions comprising carboxymethyl cellulose having degree of carboxymethyl substitution per anhydroglucose unit in the range of from about 0.5 to 0.70.

[0005] However, lower the degree of substitution in CMC, less is the solubility in water. Higher the degree of substitution, less stable is the emulsion or suspensions prepared using CMC’s. In such instances, emulsion stability and rheology behavior are jeopardized making the product less suitable for hair styling applications. Higher the viscosity, lower is the compatibility of carboxymethyl cellulose to be used in hair sprays. Therefore, there is a need in the art for a hair styling compatible carboxymethyl cellulose variant.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0021] For purposes of the following detailed description, other than in any operating examples, or where otherwise indicated, numbers that express, for example, quantities of ingredients used in the specification and claims are to be understood as being modified in all instances by the term "about". The numerical parameters set forth in the specification and attached claims are approximations that may vary depending upon the desired properties to be obtained in carrying out the invention.

[0022] All percentages, parts, proportions, and ratios as used herein, are by weight of the total composition, unless otherwise specified. [0032] A hair styling composition comprising carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) having a combination of desirable spray patterns and user performance characteristics is described herein.

[0033] In one important non-limiitng embodiment, the present application provides a hair styling composition comprising: (a) 0.05 to 10 wt. % of at least one carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) variant; (b) 0.01 to 60 wt. % of at least one hair styling additive; and (c) 0.01 to 99 wt. % of at least one solvent; wherein, the carboxymethyl cellulose has - (i) an average degree of carboxymethyl substitution (DS) per anhydroglucose unit of at least 0.60; (ii) a weight average molecular weight in the range of 30 to 500 KDa. and (iii) a viscosity in the range of 10 to 4000 @ 2%, 25°C, cps.

[0034] Hair sprays for styling hair are expected to meet user requirements of good hold ability, curl retention, dry time, being able to be removed during hair wash and meet the low VOC requirements of regulatory agencies. After numerous experimentations, the present applicants found that optimizing molecular weight, viscosity, and degree of substitution of carboxymethyl cellulose in right concentrations will result in effective and consumer friendly hair styling compositions.

[0035] CMC is a biodegradable, highly compatible anionic polymer obtained from cellulose (naturally sourced from cotton linters, wood pulp, or other cellulosic compounds) by substitution of at least a portion of the hydroxyl groups in cellulose molecule for carboxymethyl ether groups.

[0036] Carboxymethyl cellulose is commercially (CMC) obtained by alkalization reaction of cellulose with sodium mono chloroacetate and has degree of substitution (DS) in the range of 0.7 to 1.3. CMC is completely soluble at DS above 0.4 and hydro affinity of CMC increases with increasing DS.

[0037] In another non-limiting embodiment, the disclosed carboxymethyl cellulose variant is characterized by variations in degree of carboxymethyl substitution (DS), molecular weight distribution (mw), viscosity, and pH. Combination of these characteristics in pre-defined ranges results in an effective hair styling composition compatible for aqueous based hair styling formulations.

[0041] Molecular weight of cellulose compounds is determined by GPC / SEC analysis. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), also referred to as Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), is a valuable tool for the characterization of molecular weight, average molecular weight, andmolecular weight distribution for polymers. For purposes of this invention, all molecular weights are given in weight average molecular weight (MW) and measured in Kilo Daltons (KDa).
