[0024] The terms “a” or “an”, as used herein, are defined as one or more than one. The term “plurality”, as used herein, is defined as two or more than two. The term “another”, as used herein, is defined as at least a second or more. The terms “including” and / or “having”, as used herein, are defined as comprising (i.e., open language). Reference throughout this document to "one embodiment", “certain embodiments”, "an embodiment", “an implementation”, “an example” or similar terms means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Thus, theappearances of such phrases or in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment. Furthermore, the particular features, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments without limitation.
[0025] As more consumers watch television (TV) and consume digital content via set top boxes (STBs) and content streaming devices, and as the TV and digital content is funded via programmatic advertising, a portion of the advertising can be wasted due to a display of a content display device not being powered on while the connected STB or streaming device is powered on.
[0026] The STB can be unaware the content display device is powered off and can continue to play advertising, sending receipts to an advertisement provider confirming that an advertisement has been viewed when, in fact, the advertisement has not been viewed. This can be understood as waste or potentially fraud by the advertisement provider that is paying for the advertisement to be viewed and reliably reported or confirmed as such. Thus, a system and method are described herein for improving the accuracy of a content viewing realization rate.
[0027] To this end, referring now to the Drawings, FIG. 1 is a schematic view of a system 199 for determining current digital content viewing realization rates and updating running content viewing realization rates, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In an embodiment, the system 199 includes a first device 125 in network communication with one or more servers, such as a server 190, over or via a communication network 120, e.g., an Internet connection, Bluetooth, etc. The devices can be connected via a wired or a wireless connection. The communication network 120 can include more than one communication network, e.g., more than one local area network (LAN). The first device 125 can also be in communication with, for example, a content display device 155 configured to display digital content. The communication between the firstdevice 125 and the content display device 155 can be via, for example, a high-definition multimedia interface consumer electronics control (HDMI-CEC) connection, or a Wi-Fi connection, or a wired connection.
[0028] In an embodiment, the first device 125 can be on a local network 185 with additional devices, such as a second device 135 or more, which is shown as an nth device 145. In an embodiment, the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the server 190 can include a central processing unit (CPU), among other components (discussed in more detail in FIGs. 10-12). An application can be installed or accessible on the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the server 190 for executing the methods described herein. The application can also be integrated into an operating system (OS) of the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the server 190. The first device 125 can be any electronic device such as, but not limited to, a smart-phone, a personal computer, a tablet pc, a smart-watch, a smart-television, an interactive screen, an loT (Internet of things) device, a STB, or the like. The first device 125 can be used by a user, such as a consumer of a telecommunications company or Pay TV operator.
[0029] In an embodiment, the first device 125 can include a first application 130. Similarly, the second device 135 can include a second application, the content display device 155 can include a third application, and the nth device 145 can include an nth application. In an embodiment, a subset of the devices can include the application while other devices do not include the application. For example, the first device 125 can include the first application while the second device does not include the second application and the nth device 145 does not include the nth application. Of course, the different devices can include different applications. In an embodiment, the application can be a mobile application, a web-based application, or the like. For example, the first application130 can be an over the top (OTT) application such as a video streaming service. For example, the OTT application can be Netflix, and the first device 125 can be, for example, a STB. The first device 125 can transmit digital content to the content display device 155, such as digital content from the first application 130, and the content display device 155 can display the digital content from the first application 130. For example, the first application can be an audio streaming application, such as Spotify, and the digital content is audio data. The first device 125 can receive the audio data and output the audio data. Notably, receiving the digital content as video data or audio data can cause a measurable increase in bandwidth usage on the devices. The application can be an application configured to monitor metrics of the device on which the application can be installed. For example, the application can monitor an internet browsing activity. For example, the application can monitor an electricity usage. For example, the application can monitor hardware parameters. For example, the application can communicate with the server 190 to transmit the monitored metrics of the device. Additionally or alternatively, the content display device 155 can be a smart TV and display digital content from the third application included in the content display device 155, where the third application can also be an OTT application.
[0030] The first application 130, the second application, the third application, and the nth application can include software developer kits (SDKs). An SDK can be a collection of tools, libraries, documentation, and resources that users (e.g., developers) can use to create software applications for specific platforms or frameworks. Platforms owners, like operating system vendors, hardware manufacturers, or service providers, can provide SDKs to assist developers in utilizing the target technologies. The SDK can provide developers with a standardized method to interact with the platform. Notably, the SDK can include libraries or application programming interfaces (APIs), development tools, documentation and sample code, etc. APIs can be pre-builtcode modules that provide functions and methods to interact with a platform and the platform’s features. The development tools of the SDK can include integrated development environments (IDEs) for writing and organizing code, compilers for translating code into machine-readable instructions, debuggers for finding and fixing issues, emulators and simulators for testing applications, and profiling tools for performance analysis.
[0031] SDKs can be provided for various platforms and technologies. For example, SDKs can be used for mobile operating systems, such as iOS and Android. For example, SDKs can be used for web development frameworks, such as React, Angular, and Node.js. For example, SDKs can be used for cloud platforms, such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. For example, SDKs can be used for gaming platforms, such as GeForce NOW.
[0032] In an embodiment, various metric information generated by the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the content display device 155 can be monitored and measured.
[0033] In an embodiment, the metric information can be, for example, electricity usage or consumption that can be monitored and measured by a monitoring device 165. For example, the monitoring device 165 can be a smart meter. Generally, a smart meter can be a device configured to measure and record information, such as consumption of electric energy, voltage levels, current, and power factor. Smart meters can communicate the information to the user or consumer, as well as electricity providers for system monitoring and billing. For example, the monitoring device 165 can be a current transformer (CT) clamp. Generally, a CT clamp can be a sensor used with smart meters to measure electrical current. CT clamps can operate by enclosing or clamping around a conductor carrying the current to be measured, and transform the current into a smaller, more manageable value that can be measured by the smart meter. Thus, the monitoring device 165 canbe configured to measure an electricity usage of the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the content display device 155.
[0034] In an embodiment, the metric information can be other various data generated by the devices as the devices operate or communicate with one another on the local network 185, which can be monitored and measured by a networking device 170. The networking device 170 can be on the local network 185, act as the gateway between the local network 185 and the network 120, and generally communicate with or view traffic on the local network 185. For example, the networking device 170 can be a router configured to direct data traffic between the devices on the local network 185. Additional description with regards to the networking device 170 is provided below. The networking device 170 can communicate with the server 190 via the network 120. The server 190 can be a computing device configured to receive data from and transmit data to the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, the content display device 155, the monitoring device 165, and the networking device 170 via the network 120. The server 190 can analyze the received data and generate or determine instructions to transmit to the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, the content display device 155, the monitoring device 165, and the networking device 170 based on the analyzed data. The server 190 can be controlled by one of the aforementioned platform owners, such as the platform owner that also owns or provided the SDKs in the applications.
[0035] As briefly described previously, users can view digital content, such as streaming video data, on the content display device 155. The digital content can also include advertisements (or “ads”) from content providers (or ad providers). The content providers can pay, for example, an owner or provider of the first application 130, to display digital content from the content providers among the displayed video data. However, when the digital content is an ad, users can avoidviewing the ads when displayed, which can be considered a waste to the ad provider. Thus, the ad provider is essentially paying for an unwatched ad. Advantageously, the server 190 can analyze the received data from the monitoring device 165 and the networking device 170, such as the metric information generated by the first device 125, the second device 135, the nth device 145, and the content display device 155, to determine a more accurate viewing realization rate for the ads. This can be used by the ad provider to more effectively determine pricing, value, ad metrics, etc.
[0036] To this end, FIG. 2A and FIG. 2B show schematics of a method for determining current content viewing realization rates and updating running content viewing realization rates, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 2A and FIG. 2B will be described herein to provide an overview of the methods, and in particular, the method described in FIG. 2C.
[0037] In an embodiment, the local network 185 can include the first device 125, the second device 135, and the content display device 155.
[0038] In an embodiment, the electricity usage of the devices in the local network 185 can be monitored and measured by the monitoring device 165. In step 405, the electricity usage of the first device 125 can be monitored and measured by the monitoring device 165. While not explicitly shown, the content display device 155 electricity usage can be included in the electricity usage of the first device 125, or monitored and measured separately (individual or separate monitoring described below). In step 410, the electricity usage of the second device 135 can be monitored and measured by the monitoring device 165. While shown as individually monitoring and measuring the electricity usage of the first device 125 and the second device, generally the electricity usage is monitored and measured as an aggregated total by the monitoring device 165. Additionally or alternatively, the monitoring device 165 can be a smart outlet configured to measure the electricityusage of an outlet into which the first device 125 can be plugged. A second smart outlet (a second of the monitoring device 165) can be configured to measure the electricity usage of an outlet into which the second device 125 can be plugged. In this way, individual electricity usage of devices can be monitored and measured to provide a more granular view of the electricity usage. The electricity usage of the first device 125 and the second device 135 (either individually or as an aggregate) can be transmitted to the server 190 by the monitoring device 165 in step 415. That is, the server 190 can receive the measured electricity usage of the first device 125 and the second device 135 from the monitoring device 165.
[0039] In an embodiment, other metric information of the first device 125 (and the content display device 155) and the second device 135 in the local network 185 can be monitored and measured by the networking device 170. In step 420, metric information of the first device 125 can be monitored and measured by the networking device 170. While not explicitly shown, metric information of the content display device 155 can be included in the metric information of the first device 125, or monitored and measured separately. In step 425, metric information of the second device 135 can be monitored and measured by the networking device 170. Thus, the networking device 170 can differentiate the metric information of the first device 125 and the second device 135, which can be leveraged to determine changes in parameters or usage of one device or both. The metric information of the first device 125 and the second device 135 can be transmitted to the server 190 by the networking device 170 in step 430. That is, the server 190 can receive the metric information of the first device 125 and the second device 135 from the networking device 170.
[0040] In an embodiment, the server 190 can use the measured electricity usage to determine a first current content viewing realization rate in step 435. Similarly, in an embodiment, the server 190 can use the metric information to determine a second current content viewing realization ratein step 440. The current content viewing realization rates can describe a more accurate viewing rate of the digital content, such as the ads, which would otherwise assume the user always watches all of the digital content (the ads). That is, the current content viewing realization rates can provide a more accurate analysis and description of the user or user behavior in order to determine time periods when the user does or does not watch the digital content.
[0041] Notably, the server 190 can use the first current content viewing realization rate with the second current content viewing realization rate to update or modify a running content viewing realization rate in step 445. The running content viewing realization rate can describe an average of the digital content viewing realization rate for the user over a certain time period. For example, the running content viewing realization rate can describe the user’s average viewing rate of digital content over a previous day, week, month, quarter, year, etc. That is, the running content viewing realization rate can describe the user’s “normal” content viewing realization rate while the current content viewing realization rates can describe a recent “snapshot” of the user’s content viewing realization rate.
[0042] When the snapshot of the user’s content viewing realization rate differs from the normal content viewing realization rate, the running content viewing realization rate can be modified. For example, the server 190 can modify the running content viewing realization rate based on the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate by averaging the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate to generate the running content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can modify the running content viewing realization rate based on the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate by applying a weighted average of the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current contentviewing realization rate. For example, the weighted average can additionally include an adjustment based on a time factor and / or a source factor. The time factor can describe how recent the first current content viewing realization rate and / or the second current content viewing realization rate were determined or measured, and a greater weight can be applied for a more recent measurement. For example, a first weight can be applied to the first current content viewing realization rate measured 1 month ago and a second weight can be applied to the second current content viewing realization rate measured 1 day ago, and the second weight can be greater than the first weight. Thus, the second current content viewing realization rate can modify the running content viewing realization rate more than the first current content viewing realization rate. The source factor can describe a level of trust of a source from which the measurement was obtained in determining the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate. For example, a third weight can be applied to the first current content viewing realization rate based on the measured electricity usage measured by the smart meter and a fourth weight can be applied to the second content viewing realization rate based on the measured bandwidth usage measured by the router, and the fourth weight can be greater than the third weight. The fourth weight can be greater than the third weight because, for example, the router can individually measure the devices on the local network 185, the smart meter can be less accurate in measuring the electricity usage (either as an aggregate or individually), the router can inspect or analyze the traffic on the local network 185 in greater detail, etc. Thus, the second current content viewing realization rate can modify the running content viewing realization rate more than the first current content viewing realization rate.
[0043] In an embodiment, the server 190 can transmit updated digital content and / or instructions to the first device 125 in step 447. The transmitted instructions can be based on the first currentcontent viewing realization rate, the second current content viewing realization rate, or the running content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can determine the running content viewing realization rate of the user has dropped below a threshold rate, indicating that the user has viewed less and less of the digital content, such as the ads.
[0044] The updated digital content can be different digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content. For example, the updated digital content is a different type or genre of digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content (e.g., new action- based ads compared to previously comedy-based ads). For example, the updated digital content has a different length or duration of digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content (e.g., shorter, 15 second ads compared to longer, 90 second ads). The updated digital content can be configured to more effectively capture or hold the view of the user.
[0045] The transmitted instructions can leverage the HDMI-CEC connection between the first device 125 and the content display device 155 described further below. In brief, the transmitted instructions can result in display of the updated digital content and other actions to help increase the running content viewing realization rate.
[0046] Returning to step 435, in an embodiment, the first current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining a base electricity usage and a non-base electricity usage of the devices. Time periods of the non-base electricity usage compared to time periods of the digital content being displayed can then be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content (or, as understood herein, a probability or likelihood that the user viewed the digital content when aggregated over multiple analyses).
[0047] The base electricity usage can describe the average electricity usage of the devices in the local network 185 at various time periods throughout the course of a day. For example, the firstdevice 125 can be the STB, the content display device 155 can be the TV, and the local network 185 can be for a home of the user. The first device 125 and the content display device 155 can consume electricity when the content display device 155 displays digital content from the first device 125. For example, the second device 135 can be an electric kettle configured to heat a liquid, which can consume electricity when activated or powered on. Notably, the electricity consumed by electric kettles can be high, but only occurs when the electric kettle is in use. Generally, an electric kettle is not constantly powered on and not constantly heating a liquid. Therefore, the base electricity usage can describe a predicted routine for the user and can be, for example, the electricity usage of the first device 125 from 9AM to 9PM including other devices having a predictable electricity usage in the user’s home, such as lighting. The first device 125 electricity usage can be relatively constant, and the base electricity usage can be determined over a long observation period, such as days, weeks, months, years, etc.
[0048] The non-base electricity usage can result from other devices being activated or powered on, such as the second device 135. The increased electricity usage can be detected and determined to not be part of the user’s predicted routine. For example, the user can power on the kettle (the second device 135), causing a spike in the monitored and measured electricity usage of the home (assuming the monitoring device 165 is a smart meter or CT clamp measuring the aggregate electricity usage). For example, the kettle can be a 1500W kettle and cause a spike of 0.1 kWh in the monitored and measured electricity usage.
[0049] The non-base electricity usage and the corresponding time period of the spike in electricity usage can be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content being displayed. For example, the user can leave an area where the STB and TV is arranged in the home and power on the kettle. This can occur at, for example, a similar time period as when digital content, such as anad, is being displayed. Therefore, the time period of the non-base electricity usage and the time period of the digital content (the ad) being displayed by the TV can overlap. Therefore, the user is not in the same area as the TV to view the digital content being displayed and the viewing realization rate for the digital content can be lower compared to an assumption that all of the digital content is always viewed. For the provider of the digital content, such as the ad provider, the more accurate determination of the content viewing realization rate can help adjust expected value or pricing or help decide appropriate corrective actions that can be taken to increase the content viewing realization rate.
[0050] In an embodiment, the second device 135 can be a smart kettle including the second application configured to monitor metrics of the smart kettle and communicate the monitored metrics of the smart kettle to the server 190 directly, or indirectly via the monitoring device 165 and / or the networking device 170. For example, the second application can detect when the smart kettle is powered on or off, and measure an electricity usage (actual or estimated) of the smart kettle. Thus, the smart kettle with the second application can provide a more accurate determination of the non-base electricity usage.
[0051] Returning to step 440, the second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by monitoring and measuring various metric information.
[0052] In an embodiment, the metric information can be a measured bandwidth usage of the first device 125 and the second device 135. The second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining a base bandwidth usage and a non-base bandwidth usage of the devices. Time periods of the non-base bandwidth usage compared to time periods of the digital content being displayed can then be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content.
[0053] The base bandwidth usage can describe the average bandwidth usage of the devices in the local network 185 at various time periods throughout the course of a day. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB, the content display device 155 can be the TV, and the local network 185 can be for a home of the user. The first device 125 and the content display device 155 can consume bandwidth when the first device 125 streams digital content for displaying on the content display device 155. For example, the second device 135 can be a smartphone of the user and consume bandwidth when the user accesses digital content on the internet. For example, the networking device 170 can be a router. The base bandwidth usage can describe a predicted routine for the user and can be, for example, the bandwidth usage of the first device 125 from 9AM to 9PM. The first device 125 bandwidth usage can be relatively constant, and the base bandwidth usage can be determined over a long observation period, such as days, weeks, months, years, etc.
[0054] The non-base bandwidth usage, and the corresponding time period of the spike in bandwidth usage, can be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content being displayed. For example, the user can use the smartphone to also stream second digital content. This can occur at, for example, a similar time period as when the digital content, such as the ad, is being displayed. Notably, based on the amount of bandwidth usage, the bandwidth usage can be correlated to a predicted platform on the smartphone that is the cause of the non-base bandwidth usage. For example, the amount of bandwidth usage can correlate to 4K video data being streamed, and the predicted platform being used can be e.g., Netflix. This can be different than the first application 130, which can be e.g., Hulu. Thus, the user can be watching Netflix instead of Hulu. Again, the time period of the non-base bandwidth usage and the time period of the digital content (the ad) being displayed by the TV overlap. Therefore, the user is not paying attention to the TV to view the digital content (the ads on Hulu) and the viewing realization rate for the digital contentcan be lower compared to an assumption that all the digital content is always viewed. The more accurate determination of the content viewing realization rate can help adjust expected value or pricing for the ad provider or help decide appropriate corrective actions that can be taken to increase the content viewing realization rate.
[0055] In an embodiment, the smart phone (the second device 135) can include the second application configured to monitor the user activity on the second device and communicate the monitored user activity to the server 190 directly, or indirectly via the networking device 170. For example, the second application can be a companion application for the platform owner. For example, the second application can detect when the user launches other applications on the smart phone, interacts with other applications on the smart phone, interacts with the smart phone directly, or monitor the internet traffic on the smart phone. Thus, the smart phone with the second application can provide a more accurate determination of the non-base bandwidth usage and the user activity described herein.
[0056] In an embodiment, the metric information can be a monitored user activity of the first device 125 and the second device 135. The second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining time periods of monitored user activity. Time periods of the monitored user activity compared to time periods of the digital content being displayed can then be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content.
[0057] The monitored user activity can include activity of the user using the second device 135. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB, the content display device 155 can be the TV, the second device 135 can be the smartphone of the user, and the local network 185 can be for a home of the user. For example, the networking device 170 can be a router configured to direct data traffic on the local network 185. Thus, the networking device 170 can observe the activity of theuser using the smartphone (the second device 135), and importantly, the time periods of the user activity on the smartphone. For example, the user can be actively browsing the internet, playing an online game, or browsing social media on the smartphone, among other activities. The networking device 170 can observe this activity and determine the user is, for example, scrolling through a social media application while the digital content is being displayed by the content display device 155. Therefore, the user is not paying attention to the displayed digital content. That is, the time period of the user activity on the smartphone and the time period of the digital content (the ad) being displayed by the TV overlap. Therefore, the viewing realization rate for the digital content is lower compared to an assumption that all the digital content is always viewed.
[0058] In an embodiment, the metric information can be a monitored hardware parameter of the first device 125 and the second device 135. The second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining time periods of changes of the monitored hardware parameters. Time periods of the changes of the monitored hardware parameters compared to time periods of the digital content being displayed can then be used to determine whether the user viewed the digital content.
[0059] The monitored hardware parameters can include various motion sensor measurements. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB, the content display device 155 can be the TV, the second device 135 can be a remote control for the TV, and the local network 185 can be for a home of the user. The remote control (the second device 135) can be configured to transmit the hardware parameters of the remote control to the networking device 170 periodically. Thus, the networking device 170 can observe the changes to the hardware parameters of the remote control, and importantly, the time periods of the changes to the hardware parameter. For example, the user can set the remote control down on a couch on which the user is also sitting and any movement by theuser can result in a displacement of the remote control. The remote control can include various motion sensors, such as a gyroscope, inertial measurement sensor, accelerometer, etc. that describe the hardware parameters of the remote control. The networking device 170 can receive this hardware parameter change, which can be transmitted to the server 190. The server 90 can determine the user is, for example, recently disposed in the area of the TV and on the couch. Therefore, the user is potentially present and paying attention to the displayed digital content. That is, the time period of the hardware parameter change and the time period of the digital content (the ad) being displayed by the TV overlap. Therefore, the viewing realization rate for the digital content may not need adjustment. Additionally or alternatively, the second device 135 can be the smartphone of the user, which can also include the various motion sensors described above.
[0060] In an embodiment, the hardware parameter changes of the smartphone (the second device 135) can be linked to other devices, such as the nth device 145, which can be a tablet also owned by the user and therefore linked together (authorized to communicate with one another). Since the devices can communicate with one another, a proximity measurement between the devices can be monitored to determine a rough proximity of, for example, the second device 135 to the nth device 145. Upon determining the nth device 145 is within a certain distance of the second device 135, the second device 135 can transmit the proximity confirmation, which can result in an indication that the user is within the area of the TV.
[0061] Further, the networking device 170 can more accurately determine that the user is within the area of the TV if both the smartphone hardware parameter changes and the tablet hardware parameter changes are monitored. While the smartphone can be set down and therefore appear to have no hardware parameter changes (and potentially indicate the user is not present or asleep), the tablet can be generating the hardware parameter changes that indicates the user is actuallypresent and within the area of the TV. That is, only one of the linked devices needs to be generating hardware parameter changes to indicate the user is present and within the area of the TV. Thus, monitoring multiple of the devices can improve the accuracy of the determined current content viewing realization rate.
[0062] In an embodiment, the user can set the remote control down on the couch on which the user was previously sitting and the remote control motion sensors can detect no movement by the user for a time period (a threshold length of time). This can indicate the user is no longer disposed in the area of the TV and on the couch, or that the user can be sleeping. In either case, the user is likely not paying attention to the displayed digital content. That is, the time period of the hardware parameter not changing and the time period of the digital content (the ad) being displayed by the TV overlap. Therefore, the viewing realization rate for the digital content is lower compared to an assumption that all the digital content is always viewed. Conversely, the user can be simply motionless while on the couch and viewing the digital content. For such a situation, a delayed reporting can be implemented. To mitigate this false-positive, the transmitting of hardware parameter changes (or lack of changes) can be held in a buffer of a certain period of time. If an action then occurs before the end of the period of time of the buffer, the hardware parameter change can be logged without having determined the user was not paying attention since the user is still present based on the detected motion.
[0063] In an embodiment, the metric information can be a measured signal strength between the first device 125 and the second device 135. The second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining time periods of changes or fluctuations of the measured signal strength. Time periods of the fluctuations of the measured signal strength compared to time periods of the digital content being displayed can then be used to determine whether the user viewed thedigital content. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB, the content display device 155 can be the TV, the second device 135 can be a remote control for the TV, and the STB can be communicatively coupled to the remote control and configured to receive a signal from the remote control. It may be appreciated that a separate control device communicatively coupled to the remote control can be connected to the STB (the first device 125) or the content display device 155 and configured to receive the signal from the remote control. It may be appreciated that the TV (the content display device 155) can be natively configured to receive the signal from the remote control. In any case, the signal from the remote control can be an instruction to control the TV and can be input by the user using or manipulating the remote control.
[0064] In an embodiment, during time periods where the user is inputting an instruction via the remote control as well as time periods where the remote control is not being used, the remote control can periodically transmit a signal to the STB (or TV or separate control device). The STB can be configured to determine a signal strength of the transmitted signal. Notably, any object disposed between the remote control and the STB in the path of the transmitted signal can alter the signal strength of the transmitted signal. For example, the user can set the remote control on the couch and be disposed outside the path of the transmitted signal, then the user can leave the area of the TV by crossing through the path of the transmitted signal. Thus, the measured signal strength of the transmitted signal can have a first signal strength when the path is unobstructed, followed by a second signal strength when the path is obstructed due to the user crossing in front of the path. Since the user can decrease the measured signal strength of the transmitted signal, the first signal strength can be higher than the second signal strength. This can indicate a rearrangement of the user in the area of the TV and that the user is at least present in the area of the TV to view the displayed digital content. Additionally, when multiple users are present, the changing signalstrength can change with a frequency above a threshold that can indicate multiple users are present and therefore at least one user is viewing the digital content being displayed.
[0065] In an embodiment, the second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by a combination of the previously described examples. For example, the motion sensor in the remote control (the second device 135) can detect no movement by the user for a time period, thus indicating the user is not disposed in the area of the TV (the content display device 155). However, the STB (the first device 125) can detect a changing or fluctuating signal strength from the remote control, thereby indicating the user is, in fact, in the area of the TV. Therefore, the second current content viewing realization rate can more accurately be determined by having multiple inputs or sets of the metric information.
[0066] In an embodiment, the metric information is an activity status of a monitored HDMI-CEC connection between the first device 125 and the content display device 155. The second current content viewing realization rate can be determined by determining whether the content display device 155 coupled to the first device 125 via the monitored HDMI-CEC connection is transmitting an activity status indicating the content display device 155 is on and is communicating with the first device 125.
[0067] In general, an HDMI-CEC connection can allow various HDMI-connected devices to not only communicate with one another, but also allow the devices to control one other through a single HDMI cable connection. The device control can include, for example, device power control, audio control, and playback control, among other functions. The HMDI-CEC connection can allow communication between the first device 125 and the content display device 155, including determination of the activity status that describes a current status of the content display device 155. Thus, the HDMI-CEC connection can allow the first device 125 to control the content displaydevice 155, and vice-versa. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the content display device 155 can be the TV. The first device 125 can, for example, control a powering on and powering off of the content display device 155. The first device 125 can, for example, control an increase audio volume or a decrease audio volume function of the content display device 155.
[0068] To this end, FIG. 2B shows a schematic of a method for determining current digital content viewing realization rates and updating running content viewing realization rates via the HMDI- CEC activity status, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0069] In an embodiment, at step 450, the content display device 155 can transmit the HMDI-CEC activity status to the first device 125. That is, the first device 125 can receive the HDMI-CEC activity status from the content display device 155.
[0070] In an embodiment, at step 455, the first device 125 can transmit the activity status to the server 190. That is, the server 190 can receive the activity status from the first device 125.
[0071] In an embodiment, at step 460, the server 190 can transmit instructions to the first device 125 based on the activity status. For example, the server 190 can transmit instructions to the first device 125 to power on the content display device 155. For example, the server 190 can transmit instructions to the first device 125 to increase the audio volume of the content display device 155. For example, the server 190 can transmit instructions to the first device 125 to transmit digital content, such as the updated digital content for display to the content display device 155 (and the content display device 155 can display the updated digital content). Again, the updated digital content can be different digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content. For example, the updated digital content is the different type or genre of digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content (e.g., new action- based ads compared to previously comedy-based ads). For example, the updated digital content has the different length or durationof digital content compared to the previously transmitted digital content (e.g., shorter, 15 second ads compared to longer, 90 second ads).
[0072] In an embodiment, at step 465, the server 190 can transmit a prompt request to the first device 125 for display on the content display device 155. The prompt request can request input from the user. Notably, the first device 125 can monitor the user’s reaction to the prompt request to generate a prompt response status. The prompt response status can describe whether the user has responded to the prompt request, as well as a response time to the prompt request. Together, the prompt response status can describe whether the user is paying attention to the content display device 155. For example, a first response status can include a positive response to the prompt request with a response time of, for example, 5 seconds and can describe the user as viewing the digital content being displayed. For example, a second response status can include a positive response to the prompt request with a response time of, for example, 30 seconds and can describe the user as partially viewing the digital content being displayed. For example, a third response status can include a negative response (i.e., no response) to the prompt request after a maximum allowable response time period of, for example, 180 seconds and can describe the user as not viewing the digital content being displayed.
[0073] In an embodiment, at step 475, the server 190 can transmit the updated content and instructions to the first device 125 based on the running content viewing realization rate and / or the prompt response status. For example, upon determining the running content viewing realization rate is below a threshold rate and the prompt response status is similar to the third response status (negative response to the prompt request), the transmitted instructions to the first device 125 can cause the first device 125 to power on the content display device 155 (when the content display device 155 is not powered on) and to transmit the updated digital content to the content displaydevice 155 for display (with instructions to display). For example, the transmitted instructions can cause the first device 125 to pause the display of the digital content on the content display device 155 until the prompt response status includes a positive response to the prompt request indicating the user is present and viewing the digital content again (or at least in the area of the content display device 155). Further, the transmitted instructions can cause the first device 125 to replay the digital content (e.g., the ad) from a particular time point of the digital content (e.g., replay from a start of the ad) upon receiving the positive response to the prompt request after the previously received negative response. It may be appreciated that instead of the digital content replay being displayed, the updated digital content can be displayed instead. Further, the transmitted instructions can cause the first device 125 to instruct the content display device 155 to replay the digital content from the particular time point of the digital content while also including at least one additional prompt request during the replay of the digital content at a random time point of the digital content replay. That is, one or more additional prompt requests can be displayed during the digital content replay. The first device 125 can also instruct the content display device 155 to pause the display of the digital content replay when the at least one additional prompt request is displayed during the digital content replay. Further, upon the first device 125 detecting the user has powered the content display device 155 off during the digital content replay and sending the updated activity status to the server 190, the server 190 can transmit updated instructions to the first device 125 to continually power on the content display device 155 until the digital content replay has been viewed in full by the user. For example, the transmitted instructions can cause the first device 125 to increase the audio volume of the content display device 155 while the digital content (or digital content replay) is being displayed.
[0074] In an embodiment, at step 480, a content viewing profile can be generated for the user. The content viewing profile can include a history of the measured electricity usage, a history of the metric information, a history of the first current content viewing realization rate, a history of the second current content viewing realization rate, a history of the running content viewing realization rate, a history of the user’s prompt response status, a history of determined behavior of the user based on the aforementioned, or any combination thereof, among other metrics. The content viewing profile can be continually updated and used to determine habits and trends of the user. Further, the content viewing profile can be used to determine a more accurate viewing realization rate of the digital content. For example, the content viewing profile for the user can be used to determine that, for example, out of 100 ads displayed, the user only actually watches 80 ads of the 100 ads.
[0075] The data tracked in the content viewing profile can be individually or in combination transmitted to the ad provider continually or at periodic intervals based on the ad provider preference. This can be beneficial to, for example, the ad provider paying the owner of the first application 130 on the first device 125 in evaluating the pricing the ad provider is being charged and the return value from the ads displayed by the first application 130 compared to the second application and / or the third application. Further, individual metrics for the digital content can be tracked, such as which ads are viewed the most or viewed the least, as well as time periods when ads tend to be watched, and which locations have higher viewing rates for certain ads. Then, the display of the ads can favor the time periods when the ads tend to be watched or the locations where the ads tend to be watched. It may be appreciated that while the step of generating the content viewing profile is shown as being performed last in order to include the user response to the prompt requests, the order in which the step 480 is performed can occur earlier.
[0076] Notably, a neural network can be applied to the content viewing profile data to predict a likelihood of the user being present and within the area of the TV. The neural network can be trained using timeout data, which can include the history of the user’s prompt response status as well as the history of determined behavior of the user. On some content display devices 155 and STBs, after a certain period of time of no interaction or input from the user, the STB can automatically generate a warning or notification for display to the user, and if no user input is received, power down the content display device 155. Then, the neural network can be trained that any event in the period of time prior to such an automatic shutdown are consistent with no user being present. From this, the neural network can determine a likelihood of the user being present in order to modify the running content viewing realization rate further for any digital content displayed during the period of time prior to the automatic shutdown. The neural network can also be applied to other data in the content viewing profile to further modify the running content viewing realization rate.
[0077] FIG. 2C is a flow chart for a method 200 of determining current digital content viewing realization rates and updating running content viewing realization rates, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0078] In an embodiment, with reference to step 415 of FIG. 2A, at step 205, the measured electricity usage can be received by the server 190. As previously described, the monitoring device 165 can receive the electricity usage of the devices in the local network 185, and the monitoring device 165 can transmit the electricity usage to the server 190.
[0079] In an embodiment, with reference to step 430 of FIG. 2A, at step 210, the metric information can be received by the server 190. As previously described, the networking device170 can receive the metric information of the devices in the local network 185, and the networking device 170 can transmit the metric information to the server 190.
[0080] In an embodiment, with reference to step 435 and step 440 of FIG. 2 A, at step 220, the first current content viewing realization rate can be determined based on the measured electricity usage and the second current content viewing realization rate can be determined based on the metric information.
[0081] In an embodiment, with reference to step 445 of FIG. 2A, at step 225, the running content viewing realization rate can be determined based on the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can average the first current content viewing realization rate and the second current content viewing realization rate to generate the running content viewing realization rate.
[0082] In an embodiment, with reference to step 447 of FIG. 2A, at step 230, the server 190 can transmit the updated digital content and the instructions. For example, the server 190 can transmit the updated digital content and the instructions to the first device 125 to instruct the content display device 155.
[0083] In an embodiment, with reference to step 480 of FIG. 2B, at step 235, the server 190 can generate a content viewing profile.
[0084] In an embodiment, with reference to step 465 of FIG. 2B, at step 240, the server 190 can transmit instructions to provide prompt requests to the user and request user input or the prompt response. For example, the server 190 can transmit the instructions and the prompt request to the first device 125, and the first device 125 can instruct the content display device 155 to display the prompt request. The instructions can be transmitted based on the first current content viewingrealization rate, the second current content viewing realization rate, and / or the running content viewing realization rate.
[0085] In an embodiment, with reference to step 470 of FIG. 2B, at step 245, the server 190 can determine whether user input or the prompt response status has been received. For example, the prompt response status can indicate a positive or negative response to the prompt request.
[0086] Upon receiving the prompt response status indicating a positive response to the prompt request and a response time from the user under a threshold response time, the prompt response status indicates the user is viewing the digital content at a sufficient realization rate and the method 200 can end.
[0087] Upon receiving the prompt response status indicating a positive response but a response time from the user over a threshold response time, or a negative response to the prompt request after a maximum allowable response time period, the method can proceed to step 250.
[0088] In an embodiment, with reference to step 475 of FIG. 2B, at step 250, the server 190 can transmit corrective instructions. For example, the server 190 can transmit the corrective instructions to the first device 125, and the first device 125 can instruct the content display device 155 accordingly.
[0089] FIG. 3 is a flow chart describing the step 205 of receiving the measured electricity usage and the step 220 of determining the first current content viewing realization rate, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0090] In an embodiment, at step 205a, the electricity usage and corresponding time period of use of the first device 125 can be monitored. Additionally or alternatively, this can include the electricity usage and corresponding time period of use of the content display device 155.
[0091] In an embodiment, at step 205b, the electricity usage and corresponding time period of use of the second device 135 can be monitored.
[0092] In an embodiment, at step 205 c, the electricity usage and corresponding time period of use of the nth device 145 (and all other devices in the local network 185) can be monitored.
[0093] In an embodiment, at step 220a, the base electricity usage and the non-base electricity usage and the corresponding time period of use can be determined. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the kettle, and the non-base electricity usage can comprise the increased electricity usage by the kettle upon powering on the kettle.
[0094] In an embodiment, at step 220b, the server 190 can determine whether the corresponding time period of the non-base electricity usage overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the kettle, and the server 190 can determine the time period of the non-base electricity usage (the kettle being powered on) overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this can result in modification of the first current content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can determine the time period of the non-base electricity usage does not overlap with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this can result in no modification of the first current content viewing realization rate.
[0095] FIG. 4 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via bandwidth usage, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0096] In an embodiment, at step 210a, the bandwidth usage and corresponding time period of use of the first device 125 can be monitored. Additionally or alternatively, this can include the bandwidth usage and corresponding time period of use of the content display device 155.
[0097] In an embodiment, at step 210b, the bandwidth usage and corresponding time period of use of the second device 135 can be monitored.
[0098] In an embodiment, at step 205 c, the bandwidth usage and corresponding time period of use of the nth device 145 (and all other devices in the local network 185) can be monitored.
[0099] In an embodiment, at step 220d, the base bandwidth usage and the non-base bandwidth usage and the corresponding time period of use can be determined. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the smartphone of the user, and the nonbase bandwidth usage can comprise the increased bandwidth usage by the smartphone as the user streams the second digital content to the smartphone.
[0100] In an embodiment, at step 220e, the server can correlate the non-base bandwidth usage with the predicted corresponding platform. For example, based on the amount of bandwidth usage, the bandwidth usage can be correlated to the platform on the smartphone that is the cause of the non- base bandwidth usage. For example, the amount of bandwidth usage can correlate to 4K video data being streamed, and the predicted platform being used can be e.g., Netflix.
[0101] In an embodiment, at step 220f, the server 190 can determine whether the corresponding time period of the non-base bandwidth usage overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the smartphone, and the server 190 can determine the time period of the non-base bandwidth usage (the smartphone streaming the second digital content) overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device155. As previously described, this can result in modification of the second current content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can determine the time period of the non-base bandwidth usage does not overlap with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this can result in no modification of the second current content viewing realization rate.
[0102] FIG. 5 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via user activity, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0103] In an embodiment, at step 21 Od, the user activity and corresponding time period of activity can be monitored.
[0104] In an embodiment, at step 220g, the server 190 can determine whether the corresponding time period of the user activity overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the smartphone of the user, and the monitored user activity can include activity of the user using the second device 135. For example, the server 190 can determine the time period of the user activity (the user browsing the internet with the smartphone) overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this can result in modification of the second current content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can determine the time period of the user activity does not overlap with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this can result in no modification of the second current content viewing realization rate.
[0105] FIG. 6 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via hardware parameter changes, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0106] In an embodiment, at step 21 Oe, the hardware parameters and the corresponding time period of hardware parameter changes can be monitored.
[0107] In an embodiment, at step 220h, the server 190 can determine whether the corresponding time period of the hardware parameter changes overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. For example, the first device 125 can be the STB and the second device 135 can be the remote control, and the monitored hardware parameter changes can include changing measurements from the motion sensors included in the remote control. For example, the server 190 can determine the time period of the hardware parameter changes (the user moving the remote control) overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, this may not result in modification of the second current content viewing realization rate. For example, the server 190 can determine the hardware parameters have not changed for a threshold length of time, indicating the user is not present or asleep. As previously described, this can result in modification of the second current content viewing realization rate.
[0108] FIG. 7 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via the HDMI-CEC connection, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0109] In an embodiment, at step 21 Of, the HDMI-CEC status can be monitored.
[0110] In an embodiment, at step 220i, the server 190 can determine whether the content display device 155 is displaying the digital content.
[0111] In an embodiment, at step 220j, upon determining the content display device 155 is not displaying the digital content and the second current content viewing realization rate is below the running content viewing realization rate, the server can transmit the instructions to the first device 125 to power on the content display device 155 and instruct the content display device 155 to display the digital content. This can be performed by the first device 125 via the HDMI-CEC connection.
[0112] FIG. 8 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via the prompt response status of the user, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0113] In an embodiment, at step 210g, the prompt response status of the user can be monitored.
[0114] In an embodiment, at step 220k, the server 190 can determine whether the prompt response status of the user indicates the user is present and paying attention to the displayed digital content. As previously described, the server 190 can transmit the prompt request to the first device 125 for display on the content display device 155. The prompt request can request input from the user and monitor the user’s reaction to the prompt request to generate the prompt response status. The prompt response status can describe whether the user has responded to the prompt request, as well as the response time of the user to the prompt request. For example, the third response status can include the negative response (i.e., no response) to the prompt request after the maximum allowable response time period and can describe the user as not viewing the digital content being displayed. As previously described, this can result in modification of the second current content viewing realization rate, as well as the server 190 transmitting additional corrective instructions.
[0115] FIG. 9 is a flow chart describing the step 210 of receiving the metric information and the step 220 of determining the second current content viewing realization rate via the monitored signal strength, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0116] In an embodiment, at step 21 Oh, the signal strength between the first device 125 and a control device can be monitored. For example, the first device 125 can be the remote control and the control device can be the STB or the TV configured to receive the transmitted signal from the remote control having the signal strength.
[0117] In an embodiment, at step 2201, the server 190 can determine whether the time period of the signal strength fluctuations or changes overlaps with the time period of the digital content being displayed by the content display device 155. As previously described, any object disposed between the remote control and the STB in the path of the transmitted signal can alter the signal strength of the transmitted signal from the remote control. As previously described, this can result in no modification of the second current content viewing realization rate.
[0118] Embodiments of the subject matter and the functional operations described in this specification can be implemented by digital electronic / processing circuitry (on one or more ofdevices 125, 135, 151, 190, etc.), in tangibly embodied computer software or firmware, in computer hardware, including the structures disclosed in this specification and their structural equivalents, or in combinations of one or more of them. Embodiments of the subject matter described in this specification can be implemented as one or more computer programs, i.e., one or more modules of computer program instructions encoded on a tangible non-transitory program carrier for execution by, or to control the operation of data processing apparatus, such as the devices of FIG. 1 (e.g., devices 125, 135, 151, 190, etc.) or the like. The computer storage medium can be a machine-readable storage device, a machine-readable storage substrate, a random or serial access memory device, or a combination of one or more of them.
[0119] The term “data processing apparatus” refers to data processing hardware and may encompass all kinds of apparatus, devices, and machines for processing data, including by way of example a programmable processor, a computer, or multiple processors or computers. The apparatus can also be or further include special purpose logic circuitry, e.g., an FPGA (field programmable gate array) or an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit). The apparatus can optionally include, in addition to hardware, code that creates an execution environment for computer programs, e.g., code that constitutes processor firmware, a protocol stack, a database management system, an operating system, or a combination of one or more of them.
[0120] A computer program, which may also be referred to or described as a program, software, a software application, a module, a software module, a script, or code, can be written in any form of programming language, including compiled or interpreted languages, or declarative or procedural languages, and it can be deployed in any form, including as a stand-alone program or as a module, component, Subroutine, or other unit suitable for use in a computing environment. A computer program may, but need not, correspond to a file in a file system. A program can be storedin a portion of a file that holds other programs or data, e.g., one or more scripts stored in a markup language document, in a single file dedicated to the program in question, or in multiple coordinated files, e.g., files that store one or more modules, sub-programs, or portions of code. A computer program can be deployed to be executed on one computer or on multiple computers that are located at one site or distributed across multiple sites and interconnected by a communication network.
[0121] The processes and logic flows described in this specification can be performed by one or more programmable computers executing one or more computer programs to perform functions by operating on input data and generating output. The processes and logic flows can also be performed by, and apparatus can also be implemented as, special purpose logic circuitry, e.g., an FPGA an ASIC.
[0122] Computers suitable for the execution of a computer program include, by way of example, general or special purpose microprocessors or both, or any other kind of central processing unit. Generally, a CPU will receive instructions and data from a read-only memory or a random access memory or both. Elements of a computer are a CPU for performing or executing instructions and one or more memory devices for storing instructions and data. Generally, a computer will also include, or be operatively coupled to receive data from or transfer data to, or both, one or more mass storage devices for storing data, e.g., magnetic, magneto-optical disks, or optical disks. However, a computer need not have such devices. Moreover, a computer can be embedded in another device, e.g., a mobile telephone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a mobile audio or video player, a game console, a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, or a portable storage device, e.g., a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, to name just a few. Computer-readable media suitable for storing computer program instructions and data include all forms of non-volatile memory, media and memory devices, including by way of example semiconductor memory devices, e.g.,EPROM, EEPROM, and flash memory devices; magnetic disks, e.g., internal hard disks or removable disks; magneto optical disks; and CD-ROM and DVD-ROM disks. The processor and the memory can be supplemented by, or incorporated in, special purpose logic circuitry.
[0123] To provide for interaction with a user, embodiments of the subject matter described in this specification can be implemented on a computer having a display device, e.g., a CRT (cathode ray tube) or LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor, for displaying information to the user and a keyboard and a pointing device, e.g., a mouse or a trackball, by which the user can provide input to the computer. Other kinds of devices can be used to provide for interaction with a user as well; for example, feedback provided to the user can be any form of sensory feedback, e.g., visual feedback, auditory feedback, or tactile feedback; and input from the user can be received in any form, including acoustic, speech, or tactile input. In addition, a computer can interact with a user by sending documents to and receiving documents from a device that is used by the user; for example, by sending web pages to a web browser on a user's device in response to requests received from the web browser.
[0124] Embodiments of the subject matter described in this specification can be implemented in a computing system that includes a back-end component, e.g., as a data server, or that includes a middleware component, e.g., an application server, or that includes a front-end component, e.g., a client computer having a graphical user interface or a Web browser through which a user can interact with an implementation of the subject matter described in this specification, or any combination of one or more such back-end, middleware, or front-end components. The components of the system can be interconnected by any form or medium of digital data communication, e.g., a communication network. Examples of communication networks include a local area network (LAN) and a wide area network (WAN), e.g., the Internet.
[0125] The computing system can include clients (user devices) and servers. A client and server are generally remote from each other and typically interact through a communication network. The relationship of client and server arises by virtue of computer programs running on the respective computers and having a client-server relationship to each other. In an embodiment, a server transmits data, e.g., an HTML page, to a user device, e.g., for purposes of displaying data to and receiving user input from a user interacting with the user device, which acts as a client. Data generated at the user device, e.g., a result of the user interaction, can be received from the user device at the server.
[0126] Electronic user device 20 shown in FIG. 10 can be an example of one or more of the devices shown in FIG. 1. In an embodiment, the electronic user device 20 may be a smartphone. However, the skilled artisan will appreciate that the features described herein may be adapted to be implemented on other devices (e.g., a laptop, a tablet, a server, an e-reader, a camera, a navigation device, etc.). The user device 20 of FIG. 10 includes processing circuitry, as discussed above. The processing circuitry includes one or more of the elements discussed next with reference to FIG. 10. The electronic user device 20 may include other components not explicitly illustrated in FIG. 10 such as a CPU, GPU, frame buffer, etc. The electronic user device 20 includes a controller 1110 and a wireless communication processor 1102 connected to an antenna 1101. A speaker 1104 and a microphone 1105 are connected to a voice processor 1103.
[0127] The controller 1110 may include one or more processors / processing circuitry (CPU, GPU, or other circuitry) and may control each element in the user device 20 to perform functions related to communication control, audio signal processing, graphics processing, control for the audio signal processing, still and moving image processing and control, and other kinds of signal processing. The controller 1110 may perform these functions by executing instructions stored in amemory 1150. Alternatively or in addition to the local storage of the memory 1150, the functions may be executed using instructions stored on an external device accessed on a network or on a non-transitory computer readable medium.
[0128] The memory 1150 includes but is not limited to Read Only Memory (ROM), Random Access Memory (RAM), or a memory array including a combination of volatile and non-volatile memory units. The memory 1150 may be utilized as working memory by the controller 1110 while executing the processes and algorithms of the present disclosure. Additionally, the memory 1150 may be used for long-term storage, e.g., of image data and information related thereto.
[0129] The user device 20 includes a control line CL and data line DL as internal communication bus lines. Control data to / from the controller 1110 may be transmitted through the control line CL. The data line DL may be used for transmission of voice data, displayed data, etc.
[0130] The antenna 1101 transmits / receives electromagnetic wave signals between base stations for performing radio-based communication, such as the various forms of cellular telephone communication. The wireless communication processor 1102 controls the communication performed between the user device 20 and other external devices via the antenna 1101. For example, the wireless communication processor 1102 may control communication between base stations for cellular phone communication.
[0131] The speaker 1104 emits an audio signal corresponding to audio data supplied from the voice processor 1103. The microphone 1105 detects surrounding audio and converts the detected audio into an audio signal. The audio signal may then be output to the voice processor 1103 for further processing. The voice processor 1103 demodulates and / or decodes the audio data read from the memory 1150 or audio data received by the wireless communication processor 1102 and / or ashort-distance wireless communication processor 1107. Additionally, the voice processor 1103 may decode audio signals obtained by the microphone 1105.
[0132] The user device 20 may also include a display 1120, a touch panel 1130, an operation key 1140, and a short-distance communication processor 1107 connected to an antenna 1106. The display 1120 may be a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), an organic electroluminescence display panel, or another display screen technology. In addition to displaying still and moving image data, the display 1120 may display operational inputs, such as numbers or icons which may be used for control of the user device 20. The display 1120 may additionally display a GUI for a user to control aspects of the user device 20 and / or other devices. Further, the display 1120 may display characters and images received by the user device 20 and / or stored in the memory 1150 or accessed from an external device on a network. For example, the user device 20 may access a network such as the Internet and display text and / or images transmitted from a Web server.
[0133] The touch panel 1130 may include a physical touch panel display screen and a touch panel driver. The touch panel 1130 may include one or more touch sensors for detecting an input operation on an operation surface of the touch panel display screen. The touch panel 1130 also detects a touch shape and a touch area. Used herein, the phrase “touch operation” refers to an input operation performed by touching an operation surface of the touch panel display with an instruction object, such as a finger, thumb, or stylus-type instrument. In the case where a stylus or the like is used in a touch operation, the stylus may include a conductive material at least at the tip of the stylus such that the sensors included in the touch panel 1130 may detect when the stylus approaches / contacts the operation surface of the touch panel display (similar to the case in which a finger is used for the touch operation).
[0134] In certain aspects of the present disclosure, the touch panel 1130 may be disposed adjacent to the display 1120 (e.g., laminated) or may be formed integrally with the display 1120. For simplicity, the present disclosure assumes the touch panel 1130 is formed integrally with the display 1120 and therefore, examples discussed herein may describe touch operations being performed on the surface of the display 1120 rather than the touch panel 1130. However, the skilled artisan will appreciate that this is not limiting.
[0135] For simplicity, the present disclosure assumes the touch panel 1130 is a capacitance-type touch panel technology. However, it should be appreciated that aspects of the present disclosure may easily be applied to other touch panel types (e.g., resistance-type touch panels) with alternate structures. In certain aspects of the present disclosure, the touch panel 1130 may include transparent electrode touch sensors arranged in the X-Y direction on the surface of transparent sensor glass.
[0136] The touch panel driver may be included in the touch panel 1130 for control processing related to the touch panel 1130, such as scanning control. For example, the touch panel driver may scan each sensor in an electrostatic capacitance transparent electrode pattern in the X-direction and Y-direction and detect the electrostatic capacitance value of each sensor to determine when a touch operation is performed. The touch panel driver may output a coordinate and corresponding electrostatic capacitance value for each sensor. The touch panel driver may also output a sensor identifier that may be mapped to a coordinate on the touch panel display screen. Additionally, the touch panel driver and touch panel sensors may detect when an instruction object, such as a finger is within a predetermined distance from an operation surface of the touch panel display screen. That is, the instruction object does not necessarily need to directly contact the operation surface of the touch panel display screen for touch sensors to detect the instruction object and performprocessing described herein. For example, in an embodiment, the touch panel 1130 may detect a position of a user’s finger around an edge of the display panel 1120 (e.g., gripping a protective case that surrounds the display / touch panel). Signals may be transmitted by the touch panel driver, e.g. in response to a detection of a touch operation, in response to a query from another element based on timed data exchange, etc.
[0137] The touch panel 1130 and the display 1120 may be surrounded by a protective casing, which may also enclose the other elements included in the user device 20. In an embodiment, a position of the user’s fingers on the protective casing (but not directly on the surface of the display 1120) may be detected by the touch panel 1130 sensors. Accordingly, the controller 1110 may perform display control processing described herein based on the detected position of the user’s fingers gripping the casing. For example, an element in an interface may be moved to a new location within the interface (e.g., closer to one or more of the fingers) based on the detected finger position.
[0138] Further, in an embodiment, the controller 1110 may be configured to detect which hand is holding the user device 20, based on the detected finger position. For example, the touch panel 1130 sensors may detect fingers on the left side of the user device 20 (e.g., on an edge of the display 1120 or on the protective casing), and detect a single finger on the right side of the user device 20. In this example, the controller 1110 may determine that the user is holding the user device 20 with his / her right hand because the detected grip pattern corresponds to an expected pattern when the user device 20 is held only with the right hand.
[0139] The operation key 1140 may include one or more buttons or similar external control elements, which may generate an operation signal based on a detected input by the user. In addition to outputs from the touch panel 1130, these operation signals may be supplied to the controller1110 for performing related processing and control. In certain aspects of the present disclosure, the processing and / or functions associated with external buttons and the like may be performed by the controller 1110 in response to an input operation on the touch panel 1130 display screen rather than the external button, key, etc. In this way, external buttons on the user device 20 may be eliminated in lieu of performing inputs via touch operations, thereby improving watertightness.
[0140] The antenna 1106 may transmit / receive electromagnetic wave signals to / from other external apparatuses, and the short-distance wireless communication processor 1107 may control the wireless communication performed between the other external apparatuses. Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11, and near-field communication (NFC) are non-limiting examples of wireless communication protocols that may be used for inter-device communication via the short-distance wireless communication processor 1107.
[0141] The user device 20 may include a motion sensor 1108. The motion sensor 1108 may detect features of motion (i.e., one or more movements) of the user device 20. For example, the motion sensor 1108 may include an accelerometer to detect acceleration, a gyroscope to detect angular velocity, a geomagnetic sensor to detect direction, a geo-location sensor to detect location, etc., or a combination thereof to detect motion of the user device 20. In an embodiment, the motion sensor 1108 may generate a detection signal that includes data representing the detected motion. For example, the motion sensor 1108 may determine a number of distinct movements in a motion (e.g., from start of the series of movements to the stop, within a predetermined time interval, etc.), a number of physical shocks on the user device 20 (e.g., a jarring, hitting, etc., of the electronic device), a speed and / or acceleration of the motion (instantaneous and / or temporal), or other motion features. The detected motion features may be included in the generated detection signal. The detection signal may be transmitted, e.g., to the controller 1110, whereby further processing maybe performed based on data included in the detection signal. The motion sensor 1108 can work in conjunction with a Global Positioning System (GPS) section 1160. The information of the present position detected by the GPS section 1160 is transmitted to the controller 1110. An antenna 1161 is connected to the GPS section 1160 for receiving and transmitting signals to and from a GPS satellite.
[0142] The user device 20 may include a camera section 1109, which includes a lens and shutter for capturing photographs of the surroundings around the user device 20. In an embodiment, the camera section 1109 captures surroundings of an opposite side of the user device 20 from the user. The images of the captured photographs can be displayed on the display panel 1120. A memory section saves the captured photographs. The memory section may reside within the camera section 109 or it may be part of the memory 1150. The camera section 1109 can be a separate feature attached to the user device 20 or it can be a built-in camera feature.
