Description

[0001] Electromobility components

[0002] The present invention relates to electromobility components with a color difference AE <20 from the L*a*b* coordinates to a color number beginning with "2" in the RAL color table, containing polymer compositions based on at least one polyamide and a colorant with an average particle size d50 to be determined by laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320 in the range from 1 to 12 pm, containing 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one and 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in a ratio of 1:1:0.8-1.5 to 1:1.5:0.8-1.5, as well as the use of a colorant with an average particle size to be determined according to ISO 13320 d50 in the range of 1 to 12 pm containing 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one and 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in the ratio of 1 : 1 : 0.8 -1.5 to 1 : 1.5 : 0.8 - 1.5 in polymer compositions for the production of polyamide-based electromobility components with a color difference AE <20 from the L*a*b* coordinates to a color number beginning with "2" in the RAL color table, in particular for reducing color streaks in the production of polyamide-based electromobility components.

[0003] State of the art

[0004] Engineering thermoplastics such as polyamides are an important material due to their good mechanical stability, chemical resistance, excellent electrical properties, and easy processability, particularly in the field of automotive components. They have therefore been a key component in the production of sophisticated automotive components for many years. While the combustion engine was the dominant drive concept for many years, the search for alternative drive concepts has also given rise to new requirements regarding material selection. Electromobility plays a key role in this area, with key components for the electric drive of vehicles being marked in orange—so-called electromobility components within the meaning of the present invention.

[0005] US 2022 / 153962 A1 discloses a composition comprising i) 100 parts by mass of polyamide 6 and ii) 0.3 parts by mass of a colorant comprising 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one obtainable by the synthesis route according to example 3) in EP 1 118 640 A1.

[0006] US 2022 / 153997 A1 discloses in Table 2 compositions containing i) 63.45 parts by mass of polyamide 6, ii) 0.0259 parts by mass of a colorant containing 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one (Amaplast® Orange YXL / solvent orange 111) and iii) 33 parts by mass of glass fibers, although neither particle sizes nor an isomer ratio nor an electromobility component as such are described.

[0007] Electromobility components are known to the person skilled in the art from EP 3 947 020 B1, in which they can be, for example, distribution boxes, control units, and / or cabling, designated as (172). Electromobility components can be components that are in direct contact with live parts, as well as those that, in the immediate vicinity or spatial proximity thereto, function as contact protection, warning markings, or shielding, with components that are in direct contact with the live parts being preferred according to the invention. With regard to battery components, electromobility components according to the invention are preferably standard or round cell modules, cell housings, cell connectors, cell contact systems, module connectors, pressure compensation elements, seals, and intelligent battery management systems. With regard to proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), electromobility components are preferably modules or stack modules, metallic bipolar plates, end and media modules, and sealing systems. In an electric drive unit (EDU), electromobility components can include seals and other components, in particular functionally integrated housing covers, housing seals, shaft seals, disk carriers, and stamping packages. Finally, electromobility components within the meaning of the present invention also include shielding systems and dynamic precision parts.

[0008] Due to high processing temperatures of sometimes >300°C, particularly during compounding and injection molding, the selection of suitable colorants for the orange marking of electromobility components is very limited for engineering thermoplastics such as polyamides. For example, under extreme conditions such as those encountered during polyamide processing, colorants tend to produce color streaks, especially on the surfaces of injection-molded products. Undesirable color streaks occur when the colorant is insufficiently mixed, when the colorant and the plastic being processed are incompatible, or when separation occurs due to excessive shear during injection molding. There are numerous sources of error for the occurrence of such undesirable color streaks.Examples include machine-related sources of error in the mixing screw, mixing cylinders that are too small, defective color dosing, material hoppers that are too large, or electrostatic charging of the color or colorant. Material-related sources of error can include the incompatibility of the masterbatch or colorant with the plastic being processed, insufficient solubility of the colorant in the plastic being processed, thermal sensitivity of the colorant, granules that are too large, or an excessive pigment content. Method-related sources of error can include insufficient back pressure during injection molding, excessive screw speed, melt temperature that is too high or too low, injection speed that is too high or too low, mold temperature that is too high or too low, or insufficient or excessive color dosing. Finally, mold-related defects can also contribute to the occurrence of color streaks, such as flow cross-sections that are too small, flow paths that are too long, weld lines that are too poorly positioned, or sections of the injection-molded product that are too small for injection molding. Therefore, particularly in the case of glass-fiber-reinforced electromobility components, the streak-reduced or streak-free processing of orange polyamide-based molding compounds, especially in injection molding, presents a particular challenge for the specialist.

[0009] Based on the teaching of EP 3 947 020 B1, the object of the present invention was therefore to provide electromobility components based on polyamides which, on the one hand, are characterized by the color orange, but at the same time are as free as possible from color streaks and finally show an improved (color) brilliance compared to the state of the art according to DIN EN ISO 11664-4, wherein orange polyamide-based electromobility components based on alternative dyes and / or alternative physical properties of these orange dyes are to be considered as state of the art.

[0010] Surprisingly, it has now been found that electromobility components based on polyamides and a colorant with an average particle size d50 in the range of 1 to 12 pm, determined by laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320, containing 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one and 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in a ratio of 1 : 1 : 0.8 -1.5 to 1 : 1.5 : 0.8 - 1.5 meet the required requirements, whereby the three isomers are described by the following structural formulas:

[0011]

[0012] 9,10-Oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one

[0013] 9,9'-Oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one

[0014] (Color) brilliance

[0015] Color brilliance is a general term for colorants which - based on the physical term and also referred to as brilliance in the context of the present application - non-specifically describes the light effect of a body color. It is generally dependent on the color saturation, the luminance, but also on the directed light of point light sources (brilliance in wave theory), which creates gloss on shiny surfaces or transparent materials through reflection of the light source or refraction of the light. To determine the (color) brilliance according to DIN EN ISO 11664-4, samples are subjected to a coloristic measurement within the scope of the present invention. For this purpose, polyamide granules colored with 1 wt.% titanium dioxide are dried in a circulating air dryer at 120°C for 4 hours. 1 kg of the granules are mixed with 0.20 wt.-% of the respective colorant to be tested is mixed, and this mixture is extruded at a melt temperature of 280°C using a twin-screw extruder and then granulated again. The colored granules are dried at 120°C for 4 hours, and sample plates measuring 4cm x 6cm x 0.2cm are produced from the dried, colored granules on an injection molding machine at a melt temperature of 280°C, a back pressure of 10 bar, and a mold temperature of 80°C. After at least ten injection cycles, sample plates are removed for color measurement and allowed to rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Remission measurements are then carried out on the sample plates using a d / 8° spectrophotometer. An improvement in (color) brilliance within the meaning of the present invention exists if the AC* compared to a comparison measurement based on a preparation with the same composition of components but outside the claimed isomer ratio is > 1, because an AC* of 1 is already visible to the naked eye. The higher the (color) brilliance of a sample, the more intense the coloration is perceived.

[0016] The colorant containing the isomers 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, and 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in a ratio of 1:1:0.8-1.5 to 1:1.5:0.8-1.5 is used with an average particle size d50 in the range of 1 to 12 pm, determined according to ISO 13320. Regarding the d50 value, its determination, and its significance, see Chemie Ingenieur Technik (72), pp. 273-276, 3 / 2000, Wiley-VCH Verlags GmbH, Weinheim, 2000. The d50 of a particle size distribution refers to the particle size corresponding to the cumulative abundance of 50%. The d50 is a typical parameter for assessing powder quality. For example, if the d50 value of a sample based on volume distribution is 5 pm, this means that the volume of particles below 5 pm accounts for 50% of the total sample volume, and the volume of particles above 5 pm also accounts for 50%.In mathematical statistics, the d50 is what is commonly referred to as the median.

[0048] RAL 2013 Pearl Orange 40.73 32.14 34.92 Table 1 shows the device-independent CIE L*a*b* color values for the respective RAL value: L* stands for the luminance, a* describes the color location with respect to the red-green axis and b* describes the color location with respect to the yellow-blue axis using D65 standard illuminant with a 10° field of view of a standard observer. The color model is standardized in EN ISO 11664-4 "Colorimetry -- Part 4: CIE 1976 L*a*b* Color space". For information on the L*a*b* color space (also: CIELAB) see: https: / / de.wikipedia.org / wiki / Lab-Farbraum. Each color in the color space is defined by a color location with the Cartesian coordinates {L*, a*, b*}. The a*b* coordinate plane was constructed using complementary color theory. Green and red are opposite each other on the a* axis, and the b* axis runs between blue and yellow. Complementary hues are 180° opposite each other, and all achromatic colors lie at its center (the coordinate origin a*=0, b*=0).

[0049] The L* axis describes the brightness (luminance) of the color with values from 0 to 100. In the illustration, this is perpendicular to the a*b* plane at the zero point. It can also be called the neutral gray axis because all achromatic colors (shades of gray) are contained between the endpoints black (L*=0) and white (L*=100). The a* axis describes the green or red component of a color, with negative values representing green and positive values representing red. The b* axis describes the blue or yellow component of a color, with negative values representing blue and positive values representing yellow. The a* values range from approximately -170 to +100, and the b* values from -100 to +150, with maximum values only being reached at medium brightness of certain colors. [0053] Polyamide

[0054] Polyamides to be used according to the invention can be produced by various processes and synthesized from different building blocks. A variety of processes have become known for the production of polyamides. Depending on the desired end product, different monomer building blocks, different chain regulators to achieve a desired molecular weight, or even monomers with reactive groups for subsequent post-treatment can be used.

[0055] The technically relevant processes for producing polyamides usually involve melt polycondensation. In this context, the hydrolytic polymerization of lactams is also considered a polycondensation.

[0056] Polyamides within the meaning of the present invention also include polyarylamides (PARA), such as those available from Solvay Specialty Polymers as IXEF® 1022 with 50% glass fiber reinforcement or as IXEF® 2057 with mineral reinforcement. Suitable starting materials are aliphatic and / or aromatic dicarboxylic acids such as adipic acid, 2,2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethyladipic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and aliphatic and / or aromatic diamines such as ethylenediamine diamine (ethylenediamine diamine). Examples of suitable monomers include tetramethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, 1,9-nonanediamine, 2,2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine, the isomeric diaminodicyclohexylmethanes, diaminodicyclohexylpropanes, bisaminomethylcyclohexane, phenylenediamines, xylylenediamines, aminocarboxylic acids such as aminocaproic acid, and the corresponding lactams. Caprolactams, especially s-caprolactam, are particularly preferred. Copolyamides composed of several of the above-mentioned monomers are also included.

[0057] Preferred polyamides are semi-crystalline polyamides which can be produced from diamines and dicarboxylic acids and / or lactams with at least 5 ring members or corresponding amino acids.

[0058] Particularly preferred polyamides are polyamide 6, polyamide 66, polyamide 46, and / or partially aromatic copolyamides. Preferred partially aromatic copolyamides are PA6T / 6, PA6T / 66, PA6T / 6I, or PA6T / 6I / 66.

[0059] Polyamides which are particularly preferred according to the invention are polyamide 6 (PA6) [CAS No. 25038-54-4] and polyamide 66 (PA66) [CAS No. 25038-54-4], with polyamide 6 being particularly preferred.

[0060] The designation of the polyamides used in this application complies with the international standard ISO 1874-1, where the first digit(s) indicate the number of carbon atoms of the starting diamine and the last digit(s) indicate the number of carbon atoms of the dicarboxylic acid. If only one number is given, as in the case of PA6, this means that the starting material is an α,ω-aminocarboxylic acid or the lactam derived from it, in the case of PA6, ε-caprolactam.

[0061] The PA6 [CAS No. 25038-54-4] preferably used according to the invention has a viscosity number, determined according to ISO 307 in a 0.5 wt.% solution in 96 wt.% sulfuric acid at 25°C, in the range of 80 to 180 ml / g, particularly preferably in the range of 85 to 160 ml / g, and most preferably in the range of 90 to 140 ml / g. Polyamide 6 to be used according to the invention is available, for example, as Durethan® B26 from Lanxess Deutschland GmbH, Cologne.

[0062] The polyamide 66 [CAS No. 32131-17-2] preferably used according to the invention preferably has a viscosity number, determined according to ISO 307 in a 0.5 wt. % solution in 96 wt. % sulfuric acid at 25°C, in the range of 80 to 180 ml / g, very particularly preferably a viscosity number in the range of 85 to 160 ml / g, especially preferably in the range of 90 to 140 ml / g. Polyamide 66 to be used according to the invention is available, for example, as Ultramid® A24E01 from BASF SE, Ludwigshafen.

Preferred other polymers are selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS). If at least one other polyamide or at least one other polymer is used, this is preferably or optionally done with the use of at least one compatibilizer.

[0064] Conventional additives, preferably mold release agents, stabilizers and / or flow aids known to the person skilled in the art, can be added to the polyamide to be used in the polymer compositions according to the invention while still in the melt.

[0065] Colorants

[0066] According to the invention, an isomer mixture of 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one and 10,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in a ratio of 1:1:0.8-1.5 to 1:1.5:0.8-1.5 with an average particle size d50 in the range from 1 to 12 pm, to be determined by laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320, is used as the orange dye or colorant. In contrast to the process according to Example 3 in EP 1 118 640 A1, this isomer mixture is obtainable by melting 300 g of phenol at 60°C and adding 45 g (285 mmol) of 1,8-diaminonaphthalene and 3.1 g of 2,6-lutidine (28.5 mmol) to it, and stirring the mixture for 30 minutes. Subsequently, 45 g (145 mmol) of 4,4-oxydiphthalic anhydride are added, and the reaction mixture is stirred for a further 30 minutes. The reaction mixture is then heated to 175°C and maintained at this temperature for 10 hours, during which time the resulting water of reaction is distilled off.295 g of methanol are then added to the reaction mixture at a temperature of 175°C, and the temperature of the reaction mixture is cooled to 30°C within one hour. The reaction product is isolated on a suction filter and then stirred in 300 g of phenol at 175°C for 45 minutes. 295 g of methanol are then added at a temperature of 175°C, and the temperature of the reaction mixture is cooled to 30°C within three hours. The reaction product is isolated on a suction filter and washed first with 440 g of methanol, then with 800 g of water, and dried in a vacuum drying cabinet at 80°C and 150 mbar. The isomer distribution and the average particle size d50 of the dye, which is present as an isomer mixture, are determined.

[0067] The present invention therefore also relates to the isomer mixture comprising 9,9'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one, 9,10-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one and 10,10'-oxybis-12H-phthaloperin-12-one in a ratio of 1:1:0.8-1.5 to 1:1.5:0.8-1.5, preferably with a particle size d50 in the range from 1 to 12 pm, to be determined by laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320.

[0068] The isomer mixture to be used as a colorant can be used directly as a powder, or in the form of a masterbatch, in the form of a compact or in the form of a concentrate, with masterbatches being preferred and masterbatches in a polyamide matrix being particularly preferred.

[0069] Additional components

[0070] In a preferred embodiment, at least one filler or reinforcing material is used in the polymer compositions in addition to the polyamide and the colorant. Mixtures of two or more different fillers and / or reinforcing materials can also be used.

[0071] Preferably, at least one filler or reinforcing material from the group consisting of carbon fibers [CAS No. 7440-44-0], glass beads or solid or hollow glass beads, or glass fibers, or ground glass, amorphous quartz glass, aluminum borosilicate glass with an alkali content of 1% (E-glass) [CAS No. 65997-17-3], amorphous silica [CAS No. 7631-86-9], quartz powder [CAS No. 14808-60-7], calcium silicate [CAS No. 1344-95-2], calcium metasilicate [CAS No. 10101-39-0], magnesium carbonate [CAS No. 546-93-0], kaolin [CAS No. 1332-58-7], calcined kaolin [CAS No. 92704-41-1], chalk [CAS No. 1317-65-3], kyanite [CAS No. 1302-76-7], powdered or ground quartz [CAS No. 14808-60-7], mica [CAS No. 1318-94-1], phlogopite [CAS No. 12251-00-2], barium sulfate [CAS No. 7727-43-7], feldspar [CAS No. 68476-25-5], wollastonite [CAS No. 13983-17-0], montmorillonite [CAS No. 67479-91-8], pseudoboehmite of the formula AlO(OH), magnesium carbonate [CAS No. 12125-28-9] and talc [CAS No. 14807-96-6] is used.

[0072] Among the fibrous fillers or reinforcing materials, glass fibers and wollastonite are particularly preferred, with glass fibers being most preferred. With regard to glass fibers, the expert distinguishes between chopped fibers, also known as short fibers, with a length in the range of 0.1 to 1 mm, long fibers with a length in the range of 1 to 50 mm, and continuous fibers with a length L > 50 mm. Short fibers are preferably used in injection molding technology and can be processed directly with an extruder. Long fibers can also be processed in extruders. They are used extensively in fiber injection molding. Long fibers are often added to thermosets as fillers. Continuous fibers are used as rovings or fabrics in fiber-reinforced plastics. Products with continuous fibers achieve the highest stiffness and strength values.Furthermore, milled glass fibers are offered, the length of which after milling is typically in the range of 70 to 200 pm.

[0073] Glass fibers preferably used as fillers or reinforcing materials according to the invention are chopped long glass fibers with an average initial length, determined by laser diffraction particle size analysis (laser granulometric measurement or laser diffractometry) according to ISO 13320, in the range of 1 to 50 mm, particularly preferably in the range of 1 to 10 mm, and very particularly preferably in the range of 2 to 7 mm. For information on laser diffraction particle size determination / laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320, see: https: / / de.wikipedia.org / wiki / Laserbeugungs-Partikelgr%C3%B6%C3%9Fenanalyse

[0074] Due to processing into the molding compound (compounding) or the product, particularly in the injection molding process, the glass fibers in the molding compound or product may have a smaller d90 or d50 value than the glass fibers originally used. Thus, the arithmetic mean of the glass fiber length after processing is often only in the range of 150 pm to 300 pm, which is why the length, width, and diameter specifications for fillers and reinforcing materials, especially glass fibers, given in this description refer to the state before any processing, especially before compounding or before processing, especially in injection molding.

[0075] Preferred glass fibers to be used as filler or reinforcing material have an average fiber diameter determined by laser diffractometry according to ISO 13320 in the range from 7 to 18 pm, particularly preferably in the range from 9 to 15 pm.

[0076] In a preferred embodiment, the glass fibers preferably used as fillers or reinforcing materials are treated with a suitable sizing system or adhesion promoter. A silane-based sizing system or adhesion promoter is preferably used.

[0133] Examples

[0134] To demonstrate the property improvements described in the invention, corresponding polyamide-based polymer compositions were first prepared by compounding. The individual components were mixed in a twin-screw extruder (Leistritz LSM 30-34 from Leistritz AG (Nuremberg, Germany)) at temperatures between 270 and 300°C, extruded as a strand, cooled until pelletizable, and pelletized. After drying (typically two days at 80°C in a vacuum drying cabinet), the pellets were processed by injection molding at temperatures between 270 and 290°C to produce standard test specimens for the respective tests.

[0135] In the context of the present invention, the different isomer distributions, determined via HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography), were used as a measure of the color brilliance of the molding compounds described in Table I in the form of 60*40*2 mm 3- Determine the C* value of the plates according to DIN EN ISO 11664-4 using a d / 8° spectrophotometer in a coloristic measurement (D65 standard illuminant, CIE 1976 L*a*b* color space). Furthermore, the mean particle size d50 according to ISO 13320 was to be determined as a measure of the reduction of color streaks. HPLC is a liquid chromatography technique that can not only separate substances but also identify and quantify them (determine the exact concentration) using standards.

The reaction product was isolated on a suction filter and then stirred in 300 g of phenol at 175°C for 45 minutes. 295 g of methanol were then added at a temperature of 175°C and the temperature of the reaction mixture was cooled to 30°C within three hours. The reaction product was isolated on a suction filter and washed first with 440 g of methanol and then with 800 g of water, and dried in a vacuum drying cabinet at 80°C and 150 mbar. The isomer distribution of the dye was determined to be 1:1, 2:1, and the average particle size d50 was 5 pm.

[0148] Determination of (color) brilliance according to DIN EN ISO 11664-4

[0149] To determine the (color) brilliance according to DIN EN ISO 11664-4, samples of the isomer mixtures from synthesis procedure 1 and synthesis procedure 2 were subjected to a coloristic measurement. For this purpose, polyamide 6 granules colored with 1 wt.% titanium dioxide were dried in a circulating air dryer at 120°C for 4 hours. 1 kg of this granule was mixed with 0.20 wt.% of the colorant to be tested from synthesis procedure 1 and from synthesis procedure 2, and this mixture was extruded at a melt temperature of 280°C using a twin-screw extruder and then re-granulated. The respective colored granules were dried at 120°C for 4 hours and sample plates measuring 4cm x 6cm x 0.2cm were produced from the respective dried, colored granules on an injection molding machine at 280°C melt temperature, 10 bar back pressure and 80°C mold temperature. After at least ten spray cycles, sample plates were removed for color measurement and allowed to rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Remission measurements were then taken from the sample plates using a d / 8° spectrophotometer. An improvement in (color) brilliance within the meaning of the present invention was present if the AC* compared to a comparison measurement based on a preparation outside the claimed isomer ratio was > 1, because even an AC* of 1 is visible to the naked eye.
