AI Technical Summary
High concentrations of ascorbic acid in aqueous cosmetic compositions lead to instability, color change, and degradation, making it difficult to formulate stable and effective vitamin C-based serums that require no prior manipulation and maintain color stability.
Incorporating at least 0.05% by weight of carrageenan natural polymers into the cosmetic composition, which maintains the stability and color of ascorbic acid, even at high concentrations, while ensuring the composition remains transparent and free from fatty phases and additional gelling agents.
The use of carrageenan stabilizes the ascorbic acid, preventing color change and degradation, resulting in a transparent, stable, and effective cosmetic serum with improved sensory properties and reduced carbon footprint due to the use of renewable and natural ingredients.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Transparent cosmetic composition with ascorbic acid and natural polymer
[0002] The present invention relates to a transparent aqueous cosmetic composition, comprising:
[0003] - at least 30% by weight of water with respect to the total weight of the composition,
[0004] - at least 5% by weight of ascorbic acid with respect to the total weight of the composition,
[0005] - at least 0.05% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition of at least one carrageenan, and
[0006] - the composition being substantially free from fatty phase and substantially free from gelling agent other than carrageenan, said composition having a pH between 5 and 7.
[0007] In cosmetic applications, it is common to add ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as an active agent regenerating the skin thanks to stimulation of the synthesis of collagen which is responsible for the firmness of the skin, or as a depigmenting agent, because this vitamin reduces the production of melanin which is responsible for brown spots. Ascorbic acid is also known for its antioxidant properties.
[0008] However, when ascorbic acid is introduced in aqueous medium (such as emulsions or serums) at high concentrations (i.e. for example higher than 1 % by weight, preferably higher than 5% by weight), its formulation is difficult to make, because it destabilizes and substantially changes color. This color change may lead to a brown coloration, which is unacceptable for the consumer.
[0009] This is why serum or solution type aqueous compositions are found on the market, which comprise ascorbic acid in the form of powder to dissolve extemporaneously. The drawback of this product type is that the vitamin C ends up by degrading in the aqueous medium. Thus, these products lose their appeal because, for practical reasons, consumers prefer serums requiring no prior manipulation and guaranteeing color stability and no chemical degradation.
[0010] Moreover, the formulation of environmentally-friendly cosmetic products, i.e. those whose design and development take account of environmental issues, is becoming a major concern in helping to meet global challenges. It has therefore become essential to propose more sustainable compositions and / or preparation processes and / or ingredients to meet these environmental challenges. In this context, it is important to develop novel cosmetic compositions with a better carbon footprint, in particular by promoting the use of renewable raw materials and / or those with a good wilderness quality index and / or of natural origin, and more particularly those of plant origin, while reducing the use of compounds of petrochemical origin.
[0011] Hence, there is a need for an aqueous cosmetic composition comprising ascorbic acid which is stable, i.e. which keeps the same color as initially (white in general) and the same texture, and which does not degrade the active agent.
[0012] Surprisingly, the Applicant discovered that carrageenan type natural polymers, used at a concentration of at least 0.05% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition, make it possible to obtain stable transparent compositions comprising at least 5% by weight of ascorbic acid and which have good sensory properties on application.
[0013] Thus, the present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising:
[0014] - at least 30% by weight of water with respect to the total weight of the composition,
[0015] - at least 5% by weight of ascorbic acid with respect to the total weight of the composition,
[0016] - at least 0.05% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition of at least one carrageenan, and
[0017] - the composition being substantially free from fatty phase and substantially free from gelling agent other than carrageenan, said composition having a pH between 5 and 7.

[0037] The composition according to the invention comprises at least 0.05% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition of at least one carrageenan.
[0038] Carrageenans are anionic polysaccharides making up the cell walls of various red algae (Rhodophyceae) belonging to the Gigartinaceae, Hypneaceae, Furcellariaceae and Polyideaceae families. They are generally obtained by hot aqueous extraction from natural strains of said algae. These linear polymers, formed by disaccharide structural units, are composed of two D-galactopyranose units bonded alternately by a(1 ,3) and (3(1 ,4) bonds. They are highly sulfated polysaccharides (20-50%) and the a-D-galactopyranosyl residues can be in 3,6-anhydro form. According to the number and position of ester-sulfate groups on the molecule repeating disaccharide, a distinction is made between several types of carrageenans, namely: kappa-carrageenans which have one ester-sulfate group, iota- carrageenans which have two ester-sulfate groups and lambda-carrageenans which have three ester-sulfate groups.
[0039] Carrageenans are essentially composed of salts of potassium, sodium, magnesium, triethanolamine and / or calcium and polysaccharide sulfate esters.
[0040] Preferably, the composition according to the invention comprises at least one iota- carrageenan.
[0041] The carrageenans are in particular marketed by Seppic under the name Solagum, by Gelymar under the trade name Carragel, Carralact, and Carrasol, by Cargill under the trade names SATIAGEL™ and SATIAGUM™, and by CP-Kelco under the trade name GENULACTA, GENUGEL and GENUVISCO.
[0042] Preferably, the composition according to the invention comprises at least one iota- carrageenan notably commercialized under the name Satiagel VPC 508 by Cargill.
[0043] The composition according to the invention comprises at least 0.05% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition of at least one carrageenan, preferably at least 0.1% by weight, preferably at least 0.2% by weight.

[0045] The composition according to the invention has a pH of 5.0 to 7.0. Advantageously, the pH of the composition is between 5.5 and 6.5.
[0046] Such a pH effectively limits the color degradation of ascorbic acid, and thus limits the change from a colorless composition into a composition which becomes yellow to brown over time.
[0047] Preferably, the cosmetic composition according to the invention comprises at least one base.
[0048] The base is particularly used to increase the final pH of the composition to between 5.0 and 7.0, preferably between 5.5 and 6.5.

[0050] Preferably, the base of the composition is an alkaline metal hydroxide, preferably sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, preferably sodium hydroxide. Indeed, these bases are more advantageous than nitrogenous bases, such as triethanolamine, on color stabilization (i.e., less yellowing).
[0051] Preferably, the base of the composition according to the invention is present in a base:ascorbic acid ratio ranging from 0.22 to 0.30. The composition may also comprise one or more additive(s) conventionally used in cosmetic compositions such as for example active ingredients, sequestrants, preservatives or perfumes.

[0053] The composition according to the invention may comprise at least one sequestrant.
[0054] Among the preferred sequestrants, mention may be made of the salts of ethylenediamine disuccinic acid.
[0055] The ethylenediamine disuccinic acid is a compound of formula (II):
[0056] [Chem 3]
[0057] Preferably, the composition according to the invention comprises from 0.01% to 2.5% by weight, preferably from 0.05% to 1.5% by weight, more preferably from 0.07% to 0.3% by weight of sequestrant with respect to the total weight of the composition.
[0058] The composition according to the invention may comprise at least one preservative.
[0059] Among the preferred preservatives, mention may be made of hydroxyacetophenone, phenoxyethanol and mixtures thereof.
[0060] Preferably, the composition according to the invention comprises from 0.1% to 2% by weight, preferably from 0.3% to 1 .5% by weight, more preferably from 0.5% to 1 % by weight of preservative(s) with respect to the total weight of the composition.
[0061] Preferably, the composition according to this invention is transparent.
[0062] The term transparent composition as used in the context of this invention means a composition having a turbidity value of less than 200 NTU, preferably less than 150 NTU, preferably less than 100 NTU, preferably less than 50 NTU, preferably less than 15 NTU, preferably less than 13 NTU, preferably less than 10 NTU. Preferably, the turbidity of the compositions is equal to at least 1 NTU. NTUs (nephelometric turbidity units) are units for measurement of the turbidity of a composition. The turbidity measurement is made, for example, with a model 2100P turbidity meter from Hach Company, the tubes used for the measurement being referenced AR397A cat 24347-06. The measurements are made at ambient temperature (from 20°C to 25°C).
[0063] Preferably, the composition is transparent and has a turbidity value of between 1 and 15 NTU, preferably between 1 and 13 NTU.
[0064] Finally, the invention also relates to a cosmetic process for the care of keratin materials, preferably the skin, comprising the application of a composition according to the invention on said keratin materials.
[0065] Concrete, yet non-limiting, examples, illustrating the invention, will now be provided.
[0066] EXAMPLES
[0067] In the examples, the pressure is atmospheric pressure, unless stated otherwise. Unless specified otherwise, the percentages are expressed by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition (% w / w).
[0068] Example 1 : Compositions according to the invention and comparative compositions
[0069] A / Formulas A and B according to the invention hereinbelow, and Comparative Formula CC1 , are prepared according to the following protocol:
[0070] In a first beaker (phase A):
[0071] 1. Introduce water (T>60°C) and add the ingredients of phase A thereto: glycerin, caprylyl glycol, preservative(s), sequestrant, pentylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate and active agent at 60° C;
[0072] 2. Once the whole has dissolved and there are no more crystals, allow to cool.
[0073] In a second beaker (phase B):
[0074] 1. Introduce water at ambient temperature and add ascorbic acid thereto;
[0075] 2. Adjust the pH to 6 with sodium hydroxide;
[0076] 3. Add carrageenan or polyquaternium-67 with moderate and lengthy stirring to ensure an effective deployment of the polymer.
[0077] Mix the two beakers and make up to QS with water if required. The assessment is performed thanks to a physical turbidity measurement thanks to a turbidimeter. A formula is considered transparent if the turbidity value is less than 15 NTU. assessment is performed thanks to an in vitro test on synthetic skin (SkinFX), on a scale of 1 to 5 by laboratory panel of 10 people. The sticky and gliding effect result of the serum is compared.
[0078] For the sticky effect, 1 being not sticky and 5 very sticky.
[0079] For the gliding effect, 1 being no gliding and 5 high gliding, considering that naked skin is rated as 3.
[0080] - Assessment of the sticky effect of the formulas during application: assessment at 45 seconds and 2 minutes 45 seconds after application:
[0081] The reduction in the sticky effect of the fresh formulas at application is measured: assessment 45 sec after application of the sticky effect by a panel of 10 experts trained to replicate a standardized assessment action comprising the limit formulas (assessment scale from 1 to 5, 1 meaning not sticky and 5 very sticky).
[0082] The protocol for assessing the sticky effect is as follows: 50pl of the product is applied on the back of one hand covered with a membrane that mimics the characteristics of the skin. With three fingers of the other hand (index finger, middle finger and ring finger), spread in a circle 15 times for 15 seconds. Then wait for 15 seconds, spread in a circle 15 more times for 15 seconds.
[0083] The assessment of the sticky effect is performed at the end of the 45 seconds with the fingers used for application, by tactile assessment, by tapping twice.
[0084] The skin adheres, or not, according to a score between 1 and 5 (according to the assessment scale from 1 to 5, 1 meaning not sticky and 5 very sticky). The assessments are carried out by a panel of at least 10 experts.
[0085] Rinse the fingers between each product with a cloth moistened with warm water.
[0086] - Assessment of the gliding effect of the formulas during application: assessment at 45 seconds and 2 minutes 45 seconds after application:
[0087] The increase in the gliding effect of the fresh formulas at application is measured: assessment 45 sec after application of the gliding effect by a panel of 10 experts trained to replicate a standardized assessment action comprising the limit formulas (assessment scale from 1 to 5, 1 meaning no gliding and 5 high gliding). The protocol for assessing the gliding effect is as follows: 50pl of the product is applied on the back of one hand covered with a membrane that mimics the characteristics of the skin. With three fingers of the other hand (index finger, middle finger and ring finger), spread in a circle 15 times for 15 seconds. Then wait for 15 seconds, spread in a circle 15 more times for 15 seconds.
[0088] The gliding effect is assessed after the 45 seconds with the fingers used for application, by tactile assessment, it is checked whether it is possible to make circular movements during application.
[0089] The skin grips, or not, according to a score between 1 and 5 (according to the assessment scale from 1 to 5, 1 meaning no gliding and 5 high gliding). The assessments are carried out by a panel of at least 10 experts.
[0090] Rinse the fingers between each product with a cloth moistened with warm water.
[0091] Physicochemical and chemical stability over time and temperature (at ambient temperature or A, i.e. 25°C, and at 45°C) at 2 months
[0092] [Table 1] a.s.: active substance [Table 2]
[0093] Protocol for measuring viscosity: The compositions are tested for their stability after 2 months at AT and after 2 months of storage at 45°C.
[0094] The viscosity of the composition is measured using a viscometer, for example Rheomat RM 100 PLUS manufactured by Lamy Rheology (equipped with a thermostatic bath), according to method CID-012-02.
[0095] Conclusion: the different carrageenan contents according to the invention make it possible to obtain a physicochemically and chemically stable transparent serum (i.e. loss less than 10% after ascorbic acid assay at T2 months at 45°C). The physicochemical and chemical stabilities are identical between formulas A and B according to the invention (with 0.5% and 0.4% by weight of carrageenan) and comparative formula CC1 ; on the other hand, the sensory assessment are improved for formulas A and B according to the invention (i.e. in the presence of carrageenan).
[0096] B / The following other comparative formulas CC3-CC5 were also prepared as in example 1A :
[0097] CC3 and CC4 respectively comprise 1 % or 0.4% of xanthan gum and no carraghenan, and CC5 comprises 0.5% of a cationic guar (Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) and no carraghenan.
[0098] [Table 3]
[0099] Transparency, viscosity and sticky and gliding effects for CC3-CC5 were also measured according to the protocols of example 1A.
[0100] The results show that :
[0101] CC3 is not transparent, shows a high viscosity and is very sticky ;
[0102] CC4 is transparent but still shows a high viscosity and is very sticky ; and
[0103] CC5 is transparent but is still very sticky and shows a low gliding effect. Moreover, after 2 months at 45°C, dephasing / decantation occurs. Thus, formula CC5 is not stable. C / Comparative formula CC2 hereinafter, which contains 7% ascorbic acid and 0.5% carrageenan, but also a fatty phase (phases C and D), is opaque: turbidity > 1000 NTU:
[0104] [Table 4]
[0105] Example 2: Compositions according to the invention and comparative compositions
[0106] The 5 Formulas C to G according to the invention are prepared hereinafter (according to the protocol of example 1), and they are compared to Comparative Formula CC1 of example 1.
[0107] [Table 5]
[0108] a.s.: active substance
[0109] [Table 6]
[0110] Conclusion: adding coco-glucoside and / or polyglyceryl-4 caprate surfactants to the different carrageenan contents according to the invention makes it possible to obtain a physicochemically and chemically stable transparent serum (i.e. loss less than 10% after ascorbic acid assay at T2 months at 45°C).
[0111] All the sensory assessments are improved for formulas C to G according to the invention (i.e. in the presence of carrageenan and coco-glucoside and / or polyglyceryl-4 caprate surfactants) in comparison with CC1.
[0112] Some of these assessments are also improved with respect to formulas A and B (with 0.5% and 0.4% by weight of carrageenan but without surfactant).
[0113] The underlined values in Table 5 show a greater reduction in the sticky effect or increase in the gliding effect than formula CC1 (with PQ-67) and even than formula A according to the invention (i.e. with 0.5% carrageenan and without surfactant).
[0114] Both values in italics in Table 5 show an equivalent reduction of the sticky effect to that of formula CC1 (with PQ-67) and also to formula A according to the invention.
[0115] The three values in bold type in Table 5 show a greater reduction in the sticky effect or increase in the gliding effect than formula CC1 (with PQ-67) and even than formula B according to the invention (i.e. with 0.4% carrageenan and without surfactant).
[0116] Only the value of 29.4 in Table 5 shows an equivalent reduction in the sticky effect to formula CC1 (with PQ-67) and also to formula B according to the invention.
