Description

COVER ASSEMBLY FOR A BRAKE CALIPER, PARTICLE FILTER FOR A BRAKE CALIPER AND BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLYDESCRIPTION

[0001] . Field of the invention

[0002] . The present invention relates to a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper, as well as to a brake caliper particulate filter, as well as to a brake caliper assembly.

[0003] . Background art

[0004] . Braking systems typically comprise a braking device and a rotor, e.g., a brake disc, where the braking device is configured to brake the rotor. The braking device, e.g., a brake caliper, comprises at least one thrust device and at least one braking element, such as a brake pad, which includes friction material configured to abut against a braking surface of the rotor. The interaction between the friction material of the brake pad and the rotor generates wear of the friction material and of the rotor by removing brake particulate matter from the friction material and from the rotor and releasing it into the environment. On the one hand, this particulate matter dispersed into the environment can pose a danger to human health, and on the other hand, can be deposited around the braking device, creating particulate stains which are difficult to clean.

[0005] . In order to obviate the problem of brake particulate dispersion, it is known to use particulate filters to be connected to a brake caliper so as to collect the particulate exiting the brake caliper. In particular, the known solutions involve connecting the particulate filter to a disc outlet portion of the caliper body so as to collect particulate matter generated during forward braking actions. For example, a solution of this type is known from EP2102522B1 .

[0006] . This solution, despite partially meeting the dust collection problem, makes the brake caliper assembly cumbersome.

[0007] . Other solutions involve the provision of cover assemblies or covers for brake calipers which allow covering the brake caliper, avoiding directly showing the caliper body to road users. These cover assemblies or covers allow for aesthetic functions and containment of the particulate matter generated during the braking action and / or support for particulate filters, which can be separated from the brake caliper and cleaned, without removing the brake caliper from the vehicle and without the need to clean the caliper body externally. For example, cover assemblies or covers which cover the caliper body of the brake caliper are known from KR20220163108 and DE102019111004.

[0008] . The need is felt in the industry to provide new and alternative connection systems of a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper.

[0009] . Solution

[0010] . It is an object of the present invention to provide a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper, as well as a particulate filter and a brake caliper assembly, which allow obviating at least some of the drawbacks highlighted in the prior art.

[0011] . These and other objects are achieved by a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper, as well as a by particulate filter and a brake caliper assembly according to the independent claims.

[0012] . Some advantageous embodiments are the subject of the dependent claims.

[0013] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper which is easily, safely, and reliably connectable to the brake caliper.

[0014] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper by increasing the stability of the connection with the brake caliper.

[0015] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper which forms the support structure for a particulate filter.

[0016] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to respond to the need in the industry to increase the brake particulate collection efficiency while keeping the overall size of the assembly comprising the brake caliper and particulate filter small, and avoiding hindering the dissipation of heat generated by the brake pads and the brake disc during the braking action.

[0017] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a particulate filter having a high collection efficiency of the particulate matter generated during the braking action.

[0018] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a highly versatile particulate filter, usable and interchangeable on right-side vehicle wheels and on left-side vehicle wheels.

[0019] . By virtue of the suggested solutions, it is possible to provide a particulate filter easily and reversibly connectable to the brake caliper, avoiding undesired movements of the particulate filter when using the vehicle and the brake caliper.

[0036] . Description of some preferred embodiments

[0037] . According to a general embodiment, a particulate filter cover assembly or cover for a brake caliper 100 and / or forming the support structure of a particulate filter 1 is indicated by reference numeral 2.

[0038] . The brake caliper 100 comprises a caliper body 104 adapted to be arranged straddling a brake disc 101 and at least one brake pad 107, 108 supported either directly or indirectly by the caliper body 104. Each brake pad 107, 108 comprises a respective support plate 109, 110 supporting respective friction material 111 , 112.

[0039] . The brake disc 102 is adapted to rotate about a rotation axis X-X which defines a direction parallel to said axial direction A-A. The brake disc 101 has a first braking surface 102 and a second braking surface 103 axially opposite to each other.

[0040] . The cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter 1 and / or the brake disc 102 defines a radial direction R-R, perpendicular to the axial direction A-A, and a circumferential direction C-C perpendicular to both the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R. The circumferential direction C-C extends along a circumference centered in the rotation axis X-X. The cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter 1 and / or the brake disc define a rectilinear tangential direction T-T, perpendicular to both the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R.

[0041] . The caliper body 104 comprises a disc inlet portion 105 and a disc outlet portion 106 circumferentially and / or tangentially opposite to each other.

The first cover 5 is configured to cover at least radially the disc outlet portion 106. The second cover or disc outlet cover 6 is configured to cover at least radially the disc outlet portion 105.

[0046] . The cover assembly or cover 2 further comprises first fixing means 17 configured to connect the brake caliper cover 4 to the brake caliper 100 in at least one position radially outside the brake caliper.

[0047] . The cover assembly or cover 2 further comprises second fixing means 18 configuredto connect the cover 4 to the brake caliper 100 in at least one position radially inside the brake caliper, preventing a rotation of the cover 4 with respect to the first fixing means 17.

[0048] . By virtue of the first fixing means 17 and the second fixing means 18 which connect the cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter 1 to the brake caliper 100 in at least two radially different, and preferably axially different, positions, it is possible to ensure a secure, anti-rotational connection to the cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter 1 .

[0049] . By virtue of the provision of first fixing means 17 and second fixing means 18 which connect the cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter 1 to the brake caliper 100, it is possible to ensure an effective, reversible connection which is resistant to vibrations and a variety of driving conditions, while ensuring simple and rapid intervention by an operator to separate the cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter from the brake caliper, preferably without the need for specific tools to remove and connect the particulate filter from / to the brake caliper.

[0050] . It is thus possible to respond to the need felt in the industry to provide a cover assembly or cover 2 and / or particulate filters for brake calipers which are easily connectable to the brake caliper while being easily detachable from the brake caliper, preferably avoiding the use of tools to separate the particulate filter from the brake caliper, without affecting the safety and durability of the connection of the cover assembly or cover 2 and / or the particulate filter with the brake caliper, which receives the stresses of the road surface in an unmitigated manner since it is an unsprung mass of the vehicle.

[0051] . In an embodiment, the cover assembly or cover 2 comprises a central cover 7. In an embodiment, the central cover 7 is shaped so that it at least axially covers the caliper body 104 on the side opposite to a vehicle. In an embodiment, the first cover 5 is connected to the second cover 6 by means of the central cover 7 delimiting a radial window 10 for freely accessing at least partially the brake caliper 100 and the brake disc 101 in the radial direction R-R.

[0052] . It is thus possible to avoid hindering the dispersion of heat generated during braking while axially covering the brake caliper on the side opposite to the vehicle, and thus hindering the dispersion of particulate matter towards the outside of the vehicle and protecting the cleanliness of the axially outer, and thus visible, part of the wheel rim.

[0053] . In an embodiment, the cover assembly or cover 2 comprises a brake caliper cover 4 seamlessly comprising the central cover 7, the first cover 5, and the second cover 6. The brake caliper cover 4 is shaped so as to cover the brake caliper 100 axially on the side opposite to the vehicle, leaving the brake caliper 100 free and axially accessible from the opposite side.

[0054] . By virtue of the provision of the cover and / or cover assembly, it is possible to cover the brake caliper axially on the opposite side of the vehicle so as to allow tuning the brake caliper and so as to integrate an aesthetic covering feature of the brake caliper, e.g., a particulate filter when thecover assembly or cover forms the support structure of the particulate filter.

[0055] . In an embodiment, the first cover 5 and the second cover 6 are symmetrical with respect to a cover assembly symmetry plane and / or particulate filter symmetry plane parallel to the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R.

[0056] . In an embodiment, the first fixing means 17 are configured to reversibly connect the cover 4 to the brake caliper 100. [0058] . In an embodiment, the first fixing element 19 is configured to be connected to a first fixed portion of the caliper body of the brake caliper 100, such as a disc outlet axial connection bridge 116 of the caliper body 104 or a bracket 114 of the caliper body 104, for example. In an embodiment, the second fixing element 20 is configured to be connected to a second fixed portion of the brake caliper 100, such as a disc inlet connection bridge 117 of the caliper body 104 or a bracket 114 of the caliper body 104, for example.

[0059] . In an embodiment, the second fixing means 18 are configured to form at least one anti- rotational constraint with a further fixed portion of the brake caliper 100, such as an elongated portion 118 opposite to the vehicle side of the caliper body 104 or of a bracket 114 of the caliper body 104, for example, so as to as to prevent a rotation of the brake caliper cover 4 about a first rotation axis a-a parallel to the axial direction A-A and / or a rotation about a second rotation axis r-r parallel to the radial direction R-R and / or a rotation about a third rotation axis t-t parallel to a tangential direction T-T perpendicular to the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R.

[0061] . In an embodiment, the first fixing means 17 project from the first cover 5 and the second cover 6, respectively, at least in the radial direction R-R.

[0062] . In an embodiment, the second fixing means 18 project from the radially inner bridge at least in the axial direction A-A.

[0063] . [0070] . In an embodiment, each anti-rotational element 27, 28 comprises a respective anti- rotational arm 29, which projects in a cantilevered manner from the brake caliper cover 4 towards the brake caliper 100.

[0071] . In an embodiment, each anti-rotational arm 29 extends from an attachment portion 30 connected to the brake caliper cover 4 to an abutment portion 31 configured to abut against the caliper body further fixed portion, preferably with the elongated element radially inner portion 118.

[0072] . In an embodiment, the abutment portion 31 is folded so as to abut against a first brake caliper surface and a second brake caliper surface connected to each other in a substantially orthogonal manner.

[0073] . In an embodiment, the first brake caliper surface is orthogonal and / or incident to a direction parallel to the radial direction R-R adapted to form a radial abutment with the second fixing means 18, where the second brake caliper surface is orthogonal and / or incident to a direction parallel to the axial direction A-A adapted to form an axial abutment with the second fixing means 18.

[0074] . In an embodiment, the abutment portion 31 is folded so as to abut axially and radially against the caliper body further fixed portion, preferably with the elongated element radially inner portion 118.

[0075] . In an embodiment, the abutment portion 31 is substantially L-folded forming an L- shaped section in a plane comprising the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R.

[0076] . In an embodiment, each second fixing means 18 is a folded sheet metal or leaf spring. In an embodiment, each second fixing means 18 is connected to the support structure and / or the cover by riveting or welding or gluing.

[0077] . The present invention also relates to a particulate filter generally indicated by reference numeral 1 .

[0078] . The particulate filter 1 comprises the cover assembly or cover 2 according to any of the embodiments described above, which forms a support structure, and a filtering assembly 3, supported by the support structure defined by the cover assembly or cover 2. The filtering assembly 3 is configured to collect and trap brake particulate released during a braking action due to wear of the friction material 111 , 112 and / or wear of the braking surfaces 102, 103 of the brake disc 101 .

[0079] . In an embodiment, the filtering assembly 3 comprises a first filter 8 and a second filter 9, preferably made in separate pieces. The first filter 8 is supported by the first cover 5 so that it faces the disc outlet portion 106 and the brake disc 101. The second filter 9 is supported by the second cover 6 so that it faces the disc inlet portion 105 and the brake disc 101.

[0080] . It is thus possible to respond to the need felt in the industry to make particulate filters for brake calipers provided with high particulate collection efficiency.

[0081] . The particulate filter 1 is thus configured to collect the particulate matter exiting the brake caliper 100 from both the disc inlet portion 105 and the disc outlet portion 106.

[0082] . The particulate filter 1 is thus configured to be connected to either left-side brake calipers or right-side brake calipers indifferently.

[0083] . Larger amounts of particulate matter can be collected by virtue of the provision of two circumferentially and / or tangentially opposite filters, i.e., the first filter 8 and the second filter 9.

[0084] . By virtue of the provision of two circumferentially and / or tangentially opposite filters, i.e., first filter 8 and second filter 9, it is possible to limit the replacement of the particulate filter by reversing the position of the right-side particulate filter with the left-side particulate filter during maintenance and pad change, so as to reverse the position of the first filter and the second filter, reversing the forward braking and reverse braking particulate collection function thereof, and replace the first and second filters only at a subsequent pad change.

[0085] . In an embodiment, the first filter 8 comprises a first filter first portion or first filter circumferential portion 32 and a first filter second portion or first filter radial portion 33. The first filter first portion 32 is shaped so as to be arranged radially outside the brake disc 101 and the brake caliper 100, preferably extending mainly along a direction parallel to the circumferential direction C-C, preferably over an arc of a circle. The first filter second portion 33 is shaped so as to be arranged circumferentially facing the disc outlet portion 106 of the brake caliper 100 either directly or indirectly. The first filter second portion 33 is folded with respect to the first filter first portion 32 about a folding axis parallel to the axial direction A-A so as to form a first filter concave collection portion facing the disc outlet portion 106.

[0086] . It is thus possible to respond to the need felt in the industry to make particulate filters for brake calipers provided with high particulate collection efficiency.

[0087] . By virtue of the provision of at least two filter portions, radially outside the brake disc and the disc outlet portion 106, folded with respect to each other so as to form the first filter concave collection portion, it is possible to collect a high amount of particulate matter generated during braking and dispersed circumferentially and radially at the outlet of the disc outlet portion 106.

[0088] . Throughout the present description, radially inner and radially outer indicate elements of the particulate filter which, when observed from a view perpendicular to the axial direction, are arranged in external and non-superimposable positions with the brake disc and in internal and superimposable positions with the brake disc, respectively.

[0089] . Embodiments compatible with each aspect of the invention are described below.

[0090] . In an embodiment, the first cover and the second cover are symmetrical with respect to a particulate filter symmetry plane parallel to the axial direction A-A and the radial direction R-R. In an embodiment, the first filter and the second filter are made of filtering materials adapted to be used in braking systems, for example the first filter and the second filter are paper filters, optionally reinforced with a polymer component.

[0091] . In an embodiment, the first cover 5 comprises a first cover first wall or first cover circumferential wall 11 . The first cover first wall 11 is shaped so as to be arranged radially outside the brake disc 101 and the brake caliper 100, preferably extending mainly along a direction parallel to the circumferential direction C-C, preferably over an arc of a circle.

[0092] . In an embodiment, the first cover 5 comprises a first cover second wall or first cover radial wall 12. The first cover second wall 12 is shaped so as to circumferentially face, either directly or indirectly, the disc outlet portion 106 of the brake caliper 100.

[0093] . In an embodiment, the first cover second wall 12 is folded with respect to the first coverfirst wall 11 forming a first filter concave collection portion facing the brake outlet portion 106 and, preferably, so that the first cover second wall 12 is radially subtended by the first cover first wall 11 .

[0094] . In an embodiment, the first filter 8 comprises a first filter first portion or first filter circumferential portion 32 and a first filter second portion or first filter radial portion 33. The first filter first portion 32 is shaped so as to be arranged across the brake disc 101 radially outside the brake disc 101 and the brake caliper 100. The first filter second portion 33 is shaped so as to be arranged across the brake disc 101 circumferentially facing the disc outlet portion 106 of the brake caliper 100, either directly or indirectly, without interfering with the brake disc or with the caliper body. The first filter first portion 32 extends along the first cover first wall 11 , preferably along a direction parallel to the circumferential direction C-C over an arc of a circle, projecting from the first cover first wall 11 towards said brake disc 101 and said brake caliper 100. The first filter second portion 33 extends at least partially along the first cover second wall 12, projecting from the first cover second wall 12 towards the disc outlet portion 106 of the brake caliper 100.

[0095] . In an embodiment, the first filter first portion 32 is connected to the first filter second portion 33 forming a substantially L-shaped profile and / or section in a view perpendicular to the axial direction A-A. Substantially L-shaped section means that the first filter portion and the second filter portion extend in the section either along a straight direction forming an L or along a curvilinear direction, e.g., corrugated or pleated, forming an L as a whole, i.e., a first segment along one direction and a second segment along a direction transverse or incident thereto.

[0096] . In an embodiment, the first filter 8 is reversibly coupled in at least one zone of the first cover first wall 11 and in at least two distinct zones of the first cover second wall 12.
