[0001]

[0002] MULTIPLY RICE COOKER POT

[0003] FIELD OF INVENTION

[0004] The present invention relates to a cookware, more particularly to a rice cooker pot configured with a base plate for improved heat conducting properties.

[0005] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0006] The basic process of cooking generally requires an enclosed vessel or container with a breath-hole for excess steam to exit. Uncooked rice is placed inside the rice cooker pot together with an amount of water and is then heated until it reaches boiling point. The uncooked rice is simmered until most of the water is evaporated and finally the rice is cooked.

[0007] The heat-conducting metal used to construct the pot is typically aluminium. Aluminium is a metal which has numerous advantages. It is relatively light, can easily be deepdrawn or drop-forged and conducts heat well. Additionally, it is relatively economical, therefore is universally used in industry, especially for producing cookware. Nevertheless, aluminium has its drawbacks whereby its surface scratches easily due to its softness. In domestic applications, aluminium is often coated with non-stick layer such polytetrafluoroethylene or with a layer of enamel. However, the lifetime of these coatings is limited because aluminium is too soft to support. Whilst aluminium is a good conductor of heat, and therefore requires less energy to heat and cook an amount of foodstuffs, it does not disperse heat evenly from the localized heating elements. This undesirably results in ‘hot patches’ that may bum parts of the cooked rice. It has also been reported that aluminium may contaminate the rice being cooked in the pot and is therefore not as safe for use in heating and cooking as compared to other materials such as stainless steel.

[0008] Recently, rice cooker pots are manufactured from stainless steel and address the problem of uneven heating, as stainless steel disperses heat better than aluminium. Despite that, stainless steel is not as good a heat conductor as aluminium. As a result, the pot bottom may not be uniformly heated and heat efficiency may be reduced as more energy. As such, multi-layered clad metal pot has been proposed.

[0009] A clad metal is a composite plate material consisting of a stainless steel-clad aluminium plate or an aluminium plate clad with a stainless steel plate, or a material formed by integrating two or more different metal plates. In cookware art, clad metal has a high degree of heat conductivity and heat conservativity due to the aluminium and a high degree of corrosion resistance due to the stainless steel. Furthermore, clad metal is aesthetically pleasing. Several technologies relating to clad metal pots are exemplified in the art. For example, European Patent No. EP1338233A1 disclosed a pot with multilayered bottom made of a stack of different material comprising an upper aluminium plate being fixed to the bottom of the pot, a perforated plate being fixed to the lower side of the upper aluminium plate, a lower aluminium plate being fixed to the lower side of the perforated plate and a stainless steel plate being fixed to the lower side of the lower aluminium plate. United States of America Patent No. US7319211B2 also disclosed a cooking utensil comprising a container made from aluminium obtained from injection casting and disc backed onto the outer surface of its bottom wall is made from stainless steel, whereby the surface of the bottom wall of the container has a series of spaced projections.

[0010] Nevertheless, the abovementioned technologies lack substantial structural strength whilst also not suitable for induction heating fields. Therefore, there exists a need to provide a rice cooker pot that can increase its heat conducting properties whilst maintaining its structural strength and durability by using a layer of combination of two or more different materials. This could be a combination of stainless steel which has good strength and durability qualities and aluminium which has high heat conducting properties. Such rice cooker pot may be welded with a base plate derived from the aforementioned materials to permit even distribution of induction heating. The present invention provides such a solution.

[0039] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0040] Hereinafter, the invention shall be described according to the preferred embodiments of the present invention and by referring to the accompanying description and drawings. However, it is to be understood that limiting the description to the preferred embodiments of the invention is merely to facilitate discussion of the present invention and it is envisioned that those skilled in the art may devise various modifications without departing from the scope of the appended claim.

[0041] The present invention relates to an article of manufacture used for cooking any foodstuffs. In particular, the present invention is a rice cooker pot (1). The rice cooker pot (1) of the present invention is fabricated of generally conventional design having a bottom surface to facilitate two modes of cooking. For example, the rice cooker pot (1) may accomplish conventional cooking using a conventional cooking stove that heats the rice cooker pot (1) by heating elements or flame. According to the present invention, the rice cooker pot (1) suitably accomplishes induction cooking. The rice cooker pot (1) of the present invention described herein is constructed with two or more layers of at least two different materials. The combination of materials and arrangement of the layers are designed to increase the overall heat conducting properties of the rice cooker pot (1) whilst maintaining its structural strength, durability and food compatibility. This consequently reduces the energy required to heat and thus cook the foodstuffs within. In particular, this reduces the likelihood of ‘hot patches’ which may result in burnt areas of foodstuffs. In the context of the present invention, the rice cooker pot (1) is suitable for heating and cooking any kind of foodstuffs other than rice. As such, the term “rice cooker pot” of the present invention may also be used interchangeably throughout the specification with the term “cooking pot”.

[0042] With reference to the drawings there is shown in FIGS. 1 - 7 cross-sectionally illustrating a rice cooker pot (1) made in accordance with the present invention, with the rice cooker pot (1) shown in use with a source of electromagnetic radiation (14) to facilitate induction cooking. The source of electromagnetic radiation (14) is of conventional construction which is well known in the art, and accordingly, the source of electromagnetic radiation (14) is represented illustratively in FIG. 1 by an induction cooker. The source of electromagnetic radiation (14) is capable of producing radiation in a range of power levels and a range of frequencies suitable for induction cooking. By way of example, the source of electromagnetic radiation (14) may consist of a coil of copper having alternating electric current flowing therethrough in order to produce an oscillating magnetic field. The magnetic field induces an electric current in the rice cooker pot (1) and heat generated by resistance heats rice or foodstuffs that are in thermal communication with the rice cooker pot (1).

[0043] FIG. 2 illustrates a cross-sectional view of the rice cooker pot (1) of the present invention. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the rice cooker pot (1) comprises a pot body (2) for receiving and containing rice or foodstuffs. As shown in FIG. 2, the pot body (2) comprises a pot bottom (3) having a flat bottom surface that may be circular in shape and is joined at the outer edges by a pot side wall (4), which together with the pot bottom (3) forms a cylindrical pot-like shape. A lip (5) of the pot body (2) may be formed on the outer circumference thereof by a flanging process and may have an indentation on the inside circumference on which a lid (NOT SHOWN) may rest on. Further in FIG. 2, there is shown a base plate (8) being bonded externally to the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2). As abovementioned, the rice cooker pot (1) of the present invention is suitable for induction cooking facilitated by a source of electromagnetic radiation (14). As such, it is imperative that the base plate (8) is substantially flat and conforms to the flat bottom surface of the pot bottom (3). In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the base plate (8) is configured to provide a flattened contact area to the pot bottom (3) thereby enabling a substantially uniform distribution of heat to the pot body (2) when heat is applied by the source of electromagnetic radiation (14).

[0044] Ideally, the base plate (8) is bonded to the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2) with a brazing material (11) via a brazing process. As used herein, the term “brazing process” refers to a metal -joining process that involves joining two or more pieces of metal together by melting a filler metal and flowing it into the joint between the base metals. As the filler metal melts, it is drawn by capillary action into the joint, where it wets the surfaces of the base metals. Once the joint is filled with the melted filler metal, it is allowed to cool, thereby solidifying the connection. Without being bound by the theory, the base plate (8) that is bonded externally to the pot bottom (3) comprises two pieces of different metals bonded with a brazing material (11). Making reference to FIG. 3 illustrating an enlarged view of Section A of FIG. 2 which depicts further the base plate (8) and pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2), the base plate (8) comprises an aluminium layer (9) and a stainless steel layer (10). Optionally, a copper layer may be used to substitute the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8). The aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) conducts heat more efficiently to the pot bottom (3) whilst the stainless steel layer (10) of the base plate (8) maintains the strength and durability of the base plate (8). Further, the stainless steel layer (10) of the base plate provides high corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance since the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) is relatively soft in nature and the optional copper layer is very corrosive in nature. Additionally, the stainless steel layer (10) possesses magnetic properties, therefore is substantially compatible when the rice cooker pot (1) is used with the source of electromagnetic radiation (14), for example, and induction-type cooktop. It is preferred that the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) has a thickness ranging from 1.5 mm to 5.0 mm to assist in an even distribution of heat and eliminate hot patches on the pot bottom (3). It is also preferred that the stainless steel layer (10) of the base plate (8) has a thickness ranging from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm to provide additional strength and durability enhancement to the base plate (8).

[0045] FIG. 4 depicts a more preferred embodiment of the base plate (8) bonded to the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2) with a brazing material (11). More particularly, the stainless steel layer (10) of the base plate (8) is bonded together with the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) with a brazing material (11) comprising a fluxing agent

[0046] (12) and a brazing powder (13), thereby forming a single piece of the base plate (8). The brazing powder (13) melts at temperatures substantially lower than the stainless steel layer (10) and the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) which then flows into the joint, thereby creating a strong and durable bond. Preferably, the brazing powder

[0047] (13) is silica and quartz composite powder. As used in the present invention, the fluxing agent (12) is a chemical compound or substance used to facilitate the brazing process of the stainless steel layer (10) and the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) by preventing the formation of oxides on the surfaces thereof. Oxides can interfere with the wetting action of the molten brazing powder (13) preventing it from bonding effectively with stainless steel layer (10) and the aluminium layer (9). Preferably, the fluxing agent (12) may be selected from lithium chloride, sodium chloride, zinc chloride and zinc fluoride. For illustrative purposes, FIG. 4 depicts that the fluxing agent (12) is coated on both surfaces of the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) and the brazing powder (13) is applied on the coat of the fluxing agent (12) for the brazing process. Nevertheless, provision of the brazing material (11) comprising the fluxing agent (12) and the brazing powder (13) may be accomplished using any conventional mixing techniques known in the art. As shown in FIG. 4, the base plate (8), in particular one surface of the aluminium layer (9) is bonded to the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2) with the brazing material (11) whilst the stainless steel layer (10) is bonded to the other surface of the aluminium layer (9) with the brazing material (11).

[0048] Referring back to FIG. 3 which depicts an enlarged view of Section A of FIG. 2, there is shown a basic construction of the pot body (2) of the rice cooker pot (1) of the present invention. Particularly, it is shown that the pot body (2) of the rice cooker pot (1) is constructed from at least two layers made of different materials. The combination of materials and arrangement of the layers are designed to increase the overall heat conducting properties of the rice cooker pot (1) whilst maintaining its structural strength, durability and food compatibility. Consequently, this will reduce the energy required to heat and thus cook the rice or foodstuffs within. This also reduces the likelihood of “hot patches” which may result in burnt areas of rice or foodstuffs. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the pot body (2) is constructed from an inner layer (6) made of a high strength and durable material and an outer layer (7) made of a high heat-conducting material. In the preferred embodiment, the high strength and durable material for deriving the inner layer (6) is stainless steel whereas the high heat- conducting material for deriving the outer layer (7) is aluminium. During cooking, the outer layer (7) of aluminium receives heat from the base plate (8) being in contact with the source of electromagnetic radiation (14), at which the heat is then transferred to the inner layer (6) of stainless steel through heat conduction. The outer layer (7) of aluminium is provided to conduct heat more efficiently to the inner layer (6) of stainless steel. The inner layer (6) of stainless steel is generally a weaker conductor of heat in comparison to the outer layer (7) of aluminium. As such, heat is able to spread more evenly on the inner layer (6) of stainless steel before coming in contact with the rice or foodstuffs contained in the rice cooker pot (1). Nevertheless, the inner layer (6) of stainless steel is required to maintain the strength, durability and hygienic qualities of the rice cooker pot (1). Preferably, the outer layer (7) of aluminium is coated with an additional layer of a high heat-resistant coating to protect thereof and prolong its operational lifespan. In the context of the present invention, this preferred embodiment is known as the two-ply pot configuration.

[0049] To ensure substantial improvement of heat dispersion and structural strength of the rice cooker pot (1), the pot body (2) may be constructed from layered combination of materials as abovementioned. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the rice cooker pot (1) may further comprise a plurality of layers disposed between the inner (6) and outer (7) layers of the pot bottom (3) whereby the layers of the pot bottom (3) alternate between a layer made of a high strength and durable material and a layer made of a high heat-conducting material. Preferably, the layer made of a high strength and durable material is stainless steel or titanium whereas the layer made of a high heat-conducting material is aluminium.

[0050] FIG. 5 illustrates an enlarged cross-sectional view of the pot body (2) constructed from layered combination of materials in another preferred embodiment of the rice cooker pot (1). The pot body (2) of the rice cooker pot (1) may be constructed with a middle layer (102) made of aluminium being sandwiched in between an inner layer (101) and an outer layer (103) made of stainless steel. In the context of the present invention, this particular embodiment is known as the three-ply pot configuration. The inner (101) and outer (103) layers of stainless steel substantially improve heat dispersion whilst maintaining the structural strength and food compatibility qualities of the rice cooker pot (1). Advantageously, the inner (101) and outer (103) layers of stainless steel protect the middle layer (102) of aluminium and increase the operational lifespan of the rice cooker pot (1). The middle layer (102) of aluminium also increases the overall heat conducting properties of the rice cooker pot (1).

[0051] Alternatively, the abovementioned middle aluminium portion of the three-ply pot configuration may be further layered with a combination of materials to assist in spreading heat uniformly across the rice cooker pot (1). Making reference to FIG. 6 illustrating an enlarged cross-sectional view of the pot body (2) constructed from layered combination of materials in another preferred embodiment of the rice cooker pot (1), a middle layer (201) of aluminium is sandwiched in between two intermediate layers (202) of pure aluminium to further increase rigidity thereof. The two intermediate layers (202) of pure aluminium is further sandwiched in between an inner layer (203) of stainless steel and an outer layer (204) of stainless steel to improve heat dispersion whilst further increasing the structural strength and food compatibility qualities of the rice cooker pot (1).

[0052] An exemplary embodiment of the present invention also describes a method for manufacturing the abovementioned rice cooker pot (1). In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method may be commenced with a step of preparing a pot body (2) comprising a pot bottom (3) having a flat bottom surface, a pot side wall (4) connecting with the pot bottom (3) and an opening at the top thereof. In this step, two or more square-shaped layers of stainless steel (6) and aluminium (7) may be provided and bonded together by a cladding process. This multiply combination is then shaped into circles by a blanking process which are then cold-pressed into a pot-like shape by recessing the middle of the circle to form the pot bottom (3) and the outer edge of the circle to form the pot side wall (4) of the pot body (2). Lastly, a lip (5) is formed at the top of the pot side wall (4) by a flanging process.

[0053] Next, a base plate (8) is provided which comprises an aluminium layer (9) and a stainless steel layer (10). As abovementioned, a brazing material (11) comprising a fluxing agent (12) and a brazing powder (13) is provided on the base plate (8) whereby the fluxing agent (12) is coated on both surfaces of the aluminium layer (9) of the base plate (8) and the brazing powder (13) is applied on the coat of the fluxing agent (12). In particular, one surface of the aluminium layer (9) is disposed on the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2) with the brazing material (11) whilst the stainless steel layer (10) is disposed on the other surface of the aluminium layer (9) with the brazing material (11). A step of brazing is then commenced whereby the base plate (8) is brazed to the external side of the pot bottom (3) with an induction heating machine. Ideally, this step is performed by brazing the base plate (8) onto the pot bottom (3) of the pot body (2) with the brazing material (11) at a temperature ranging from 370°C to 390°C and at a pressure ranging from 2.0 kg / cm2to 2.5 kg / cm2.

[0054] Once the base plate (8) is bonded onto the external side of the pot bottom (3), the base plate (8) is pressed on the external side of the pot bottom (3) by against the induction heating machine so as to flatten the base plate (8) such that the base plate (8) conforms to a substantially flat bottom surface of the pot bottom (3). In this embodiment, the base plate (8) comprises the aluminium layer (9) and the stainless steel layer (10), whereby the stainless steel layer (10) is orientated outwardly of the pot body (2), as shown in FIG. 3. The stainless steel layer (10) of the base plate (8) is configured to be in contact with a heating element, for example a source of electromagnetic radiation (14), for induction cooking. However, due to the nature of the stainless steel layer (10), the base plate (8) may initially be formed in a warped state following a brazing step, as depicted in FIG. 7. The substantially warped base plate (8) significantly reduces heating contact with the source of electromagnetic radiation (14), thereby reduces heating efficiency of the rice cooker pot (1). As such, the base plate (8) is pressed so as to flatten thereof to obtain a substantially flat rice cooker pot (1).

[0055] The present disclosure includes as contained in the appended claims, as well as that of the foregoing description. Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a degree of particularly, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.
