Description

SILICONE AND FILLER COMPOSITION WITH HIGH FLOWABILITY

[0001] TECHNOLOGICAL FIELD OF THE PRESENT INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to a silicone and filler composition with high flowability. This invention also relates to a process for treating fillers, use of side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane in treating fillers, as well as an encapsulant, a sealant, a conformal coating and / or a thermal interface material obtained from said silicone and filler composition.BACKGROUND ART

[0003] Functional fillers will endow silicone compositions with various featured advantages, including higher modulus, thermal conductivity, electronic conductivity, specific rheology behaviors and even low cost. Therefore, they are broadly used in silicone compositions that specially requires such performances.

[0004] However, usually adding fillers will reduce the flowability of silicone compositions. In some application scenarios like encapsulants, sealants, conformal coatings and thermal interface materials (TIMs) , there will be higher requirement of flowability, wherein filler treatment will be of critical importance to maintain good flowability for meeting such ultra flowability needs.

[0005] For filler treatment, a lot of kinds of alkoxy-based silanes or polymers are well known in the art as filler treating agents. They have been proved to be very effective in most cases. Especially for those polymer-based filler treating agents, their value in both low and highly filled systems have been well proved. However, most alkoxy-based polymer filler treating agents are expensive and their ability to promote flowability is sometimes limited for applications with ultra flowability needs. Moreover, in view of sustainability, the alkoxy-based filler treating technology will eventually release alcohol byproduct (methanol in most cases) , which is against the global push towards sustainability.

[0006] On the other hand, epoxy siloxane used for metal treating are also well known in the art. For example, Patent Document 1 disclosed a two-component anticorrosive paint which comprises a metal filler, and epoxy siloxane is also included. In addition, Patent Document 2 disclosed a method for metal treatment with components including epoxy siloxane. In both of these prior art technologies, epoxy siloxane is cured into a network to achieve desired anticorrosion effect or metal treating effect.

[0007] However, in both of Patent Documents 1 and 2, since epoxy siloxane is not used as filler treating agent, but is cured into a network, it exhibits gel-like properties rather than flowability. Hence, the epoxy siloxane used in them cannot meet ultra flowability needs.

[0008] Furthermore, amino siloxane and hydroxy-containing siloxane can also be used as filler treating agents such as in Patent Document 3, wherein functional siloxanes with hydroxy and amino groups were utilized. However, their levels of flowability promotion are rather limited, especially in highly filled systems. Moreover, amino and hydroxy groups usually will interfere the curing reaction of silicone compositions like hydrosylilation.

[0013] PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED BY THE INVENTION

[0014] In the silicone composition technology field, filler treating agent that can greatly promote flowability to meet ultra flowability needs is not well known. There are only a few prior arts (such as Patent Documents 1 and 2) providing some disclosures about epoxy siloxane being used in filler-containing systems, but epoxy siloxane used in those scenarios are cured into network and are therefore not capable of promoting flowability.

[0015] Accordingly, in view of the above problems in prior arts, it is an object of the present invention to provide a silicone and filler composition with high  flowability. Particularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a silicone and filler composition, which includes a novel filler treating agent and thereby exhibits high flowability.

[0016] Further, it is other objects of the present invention to provide a process for treating fillers, use of said novel filler treating agent in treating fillers, as well as an encapsulant, a sealant, a conformal coating and / or a thermal interface material obtained from said silicone and filler composition.

[0017] MEANS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEM

[0018] As a result of persistent investigation, the present inventors discovered a novel filler treating technology using side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane. The side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane used in said filler treating technology, which preferably falls within an appropriate epoxy equivalent weight range, serves as a filler treating agent to promote flowability. The process of said filler treating technology is mixing followed by heating under vacuum. The present invention is a product of this discovery.

[0049] EFFECT OF THE INVENTION

[0050] The present invention is able to provide a silicone and filler composition, which has greatly high flowability. Particularly, according to the present invention, by adding with the same weight percentage into a silicone formulation filled with filler, the filler treating agent (C) of the present invention (which is a side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane) will be comparable  or even better in promoting flowability than traditional alkoxy-based filler treating agents.

[0051] Furthermore, unlike traditional filler treating agents, the epoxy functionality in the filler treating agent (C) of the present invention will not generate alcohol during filler treating process, and this is very favourable in terms of sustainability. In addition, the filler treating agent (C) of the present invention is a side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane, which can be easily produced by equilibrium followed by hydrosilylation with low cost. Hence, it is in general more cost effective than traditional alkoxy-based polymer filler treating agent.

[0058] It is also to be understood that any ranges and subranges relied upon in describing various embodiments of the present invention independently and collectively fall within the scope of the appended claims, and are understood to describe and contemplate all ranges including whole and / or fractional values therein, even if such values are not expressly written herein. One of skill in the art readily recognizes that the enumerated ranges and subranges sufficiently describe and enable various embodiments of the present invention, and such ranges and subranges may be further delineated into relevant halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, and so on. As just one example, a range “of from 0.1 to 0.9” may be further delineated into a lower third, i.e., from 0.1 to 0.3, a middle third, i.e., from 0.4 to 0.6, and an upper third, i.e., from 0.7 to 0.9, which individually and collectively are within the scope of the appended claims, and may be relied upon individually and / or collectively and provide adequate support for specific embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. In addition, with respect to the language which defines or modifies a range, such as “at least” , “greater than” , “less than” , “no more  than” and the like, it is to be understood that such language includes subranges and / or an upper or lower limit. As another example, a range of “at least 10” inherently includes a subrange of from at least 10 to 35, a subrange of from at least 10 to 25, a subrange of from 25 to 35, and so on, and each subrange may be relied upon individually and / or collectively and provides adequate support for specific embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. Finally, an individual number within a disclosed range may be relied upon and provides adequate support for specific embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. For example, a range “of from 1 to 9” includes various individual integers, such as 3, as well as individual numbers including a decimal point (or fraction) , such as 4.1 , which may be relied upon and provide adequate support for specific embodiments within the scope of the appended claims.

[0059] In the present invention, a silicone and filler composition, which has greatly high flowability, is provided. Here, the term “high flowability” has the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art, and particularly, in the present invention, it preferably means a flowability high enough for 1 mL material to flow into a circle having a diameter of about 100 mm in about 60 min on a precleaned glass plate.

[0060] Specifically, silicone and filler composition of the present invention comprises, substantially consists of, or consists of: (A) an organopolysiloxane; (B) a filler; (C) a filler treating agent represented by the following general formula (I) : MDxUyM’     (I)

[0061] Wherein D represents an R2SiO2 / 2 unit in which R are in each occurance the same or different monovalent alkyl groups free of epoxy functionality; U represents a epoxy containing unit of R’nR (2-n) SiO2 / 2 in which R is a monovalent alkyl group and R’ is a monovalent organic group containing at least one vicinal epoxy group and n has a value from 1 to 2; M and M’ are in each occurance the same or different end-blocking units having the formula of R3SiO1 / 2, wherein R are in each occurance the same or  different monovalent alkyl groups free of epoxy groups; x is an integer having a value from 10 to 1,000 and y is an integer having a value from 1 to 100.

[0062] Component (A)

[0063] In the present invention, component (A) is well-known in the art, particularly well known in technical fields of encapsulants, sealants, conformal coatings and thermal interface materials, etc. While the molecular structure of component (A) is not particularly limited, examples thereof include a linear structure, branched structure, partially branched structure, cyclic structure, resinous structure (i.e., a strucutre having a three-dimensional network) , and dendritic structure. Component (A) may also be a mixture comprising a combination of two or more of these molecular structures. For example, the component (A) may comprise any combination of M, D, T and / or Q siloxy units, and these siloxy units can be combined in various manners to form linear, branched, cyclic, resinous (three-dimensional networked) and / or dendritic structures.

[0064] Component (A) is branched or resinous when it includes T siloxy units and / or Q siloxy units. When component (A) is branched or resinous, it is typically a copolymer including T siloxy units and / or Q siloxy units in combination with M siloxy units and / or D siloxy units. For example, component (A) can be a DT resin, an MT resin, an MDT resin, a DTQ resin, an MTQ resin, an MDTQ resin, a DQ resin, an MQ resin, a DTQ resin, an MTQ resin, or an MDQ resin. Alternatively, in certain embodiments, component (A) is linear, in which case it comprises D siloxy units in combination with M siloxy units.

[0065] In certain embodiments, said organopolysiloxane (A) preferably has the following average unit formula (II) : [R3SiO1 / 2] a [R2SiO2 / 2] b [RSiO3 / 2] c [SiO4 / 2] d     (II) ;

[0066] wherein each R is independently selected substituent; 0 < a ≤ 0.99; 0 < b ≤ 0.99; 0 ≤ c ≤ 0.2; and 0 ≤ d ≤ 0.2, with the proviso that a+b+c+d=1.

[0067] Each substituent as said group R may independently be, but is not limited to linear, branched or cyclic monovalent hydrocarbyl groups, or any kind of generally used functional groups in the art. Here, linear or branched  monovalent hydrocarbyl groups may be exemplified by methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, t-butyl, pentyl, hexyl, cyclohexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, or similar alkyl groups; and 3-chloropropyl groups, 3, 3, 3-trifluoropropyl groups, or similar halogenated alkyl groups. Cyclic monovalent hydrocarbyl groups may be exemplified by phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, naphthyl, or similar aryl groups; benzyl, phenethyl, or similar aralkyl groups.

[0068] In certain embodiments, said group R may also include some unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbyl groups such as alkenyl groups. In other words, component (A) may be an organopolysiloxane having at least two alkenyl groups with 2 to 12 carbon atoms per molecule. The alkenyl groups are exemplified by vinyl groups, allyl groups, butenyl groups, pentenyl groups, and hexenyl groups, but vinyl groups are preferred from the perspective of economic efficiency and reactivity.

[0069] Moreover, while not particularly limited thereto, the viscosity of component (A) at 25℃ is at least 10 mPa·s, such as from 10 to 100,000 mPa·s, preferably from 20 to 50,000 mPa·s, more preferably from 50 to 10,000 mPa·s, further more preferably from 50 to 5,000 mPa·s. This is because, if the viscosity at 25℃ is not less than the lower limit of the abovementioned ranges the oil bleeding of the composition will be accpetable, and when the composition further includes components (E) and (F) , thus forming a curable composition, the physical properties of the obtained cured product, particularly flexibility and elongation, may significantly increase; in contrast, if it is not more than the upper limit of the abovementioned ranges, handleability (like flowability, printability, extrusion rate, etc. ) of the obtained composition may increase. The viscosity is measured by using a rotational viscometer according to ASTM D 1084.

[0070] Furthermore, while not particularly limited thereto, the amount of component (A) is from 1 to 80 weight %, preferably from 5 to 70 weight %, more preferably from 10 to 60 weight %, most preferably from 20 to 50 weight % based on the total weight of the composition. This is because, if the amount of component (A) falls within the abovementioned ranges, the expected performance like thermal conductivity will be achieved, and when  the composition further includes components (E) and (F) , thus forming a curable composition, it is then sufficiently to form a desired cured product.

[0071] Examples of the organopolysiloxanes for component (A) include dimethylpolysiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with trimethylsiloxy groups, methylphenylpolysiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with trimethylsiloxy groups, a copolymer of dimethylsiloxane and methylvinylsiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with trimethylsiloxy groups, a copolymer of dimethylsiloxane, methylvinylsiloxane and methylphenylsiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with trimethylsiloxy groups, a dimethylpolysiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with dimethylvinylsiloxy groups, a methylphenylpolysiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with dimethylvinylsiloxy groups, a copolymer of dimethylsiloxane and methylvinylsiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with dimethylvinylsiloxy groups, a copolymer of dimethylsiloxane and methylvinylsiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with dimethylphenylsiloxy groups, and a dimethylpolysiloxane capped at both molecular chain terminals with methylvinylphenylsiloxy groups.

[0072] Component (B)

[0073] In the present invention, component (B) are used to endow silicone compositions containing said component (A) with various featured advantages, including higher modulus, thermal conductivity, electronic conductivity and specific rheology behaviors. It is preferably an inorganic filler, preferably one or more selected from the group consisting of a thermally conductive filler, a conductive filler, or a reinforcing filler, more preferably containing a reinforcing filler particularly when the present silicone and filler composition is used in the application of an encapsulant or a sealant.

[0074] The reinforcing filler is a component which imparts mechanical strength to the cured product obtained by curing the present composition and improving the performance as a protectant or adhesive. Exemplary reinforcing fillers may include, for example, inorganic fillers such as fumed silica fine powder, precipitated silica fine powder, burned silica fine powder,  fumed titanium dioxide fine powder, quartz fine powder, calcium carbonate fine powder, diatomaceous earth fine powder, aluminum oxide fine powder, aluminum hydroxide fine powder, zinc oxide fine powder, and zinc carbonate fine powder, with these inorganic fillers capable of containing inorganic fillers surface treated with treatment agents including organoalkoxysilanes such as a methyltrimethoxysilane, organohalosilanes such as a trimethylchlorosilane, organosilazanes such as a hexamethyldisilazane, and siloxane oligomers such as a dimethylsiloxane oligomer blocked by an α, ω-silanol group, a methylphenylsiloxane oligomer blocked by an α, ω-silanol group, and a methylvinylsiloxane oligomer blocked by an α, ω-silanol group. In particular, by treating the surface of component (B) in advance with an organopolysiloxane of a low degree of polymerization having a silanol group at both terminals of a molecular chain (suitably, a dimethylpolysiloxane blocked by an a, w-silanol group not having reactive functional groups other than this terminal silanol group in molecules) , excellent initial adhesiveness, adhesive durability, and adhesive strength at room temperature can be achieved, with further sufficient usable time (storage period, handling operation time, and pot life) capable of being ensured.

[0075] While not particularly limited thereto, the particle diameter of fine powder of the reinforcing filler may be, for example, within the range of 0.01 μm to 1000 μm at the median diameter based on the laser diffraction / scattering type particle size distribution measurement.

[0076] The thermally conductive filler or the conductive filler is a component which imparts thermal conductivity or electric conductivity to the present composition as desired, with examples thereof including: metal fine powder such as gold, silver, nickel, and copper; fine powder obtained by depositing or plating metals such as gold, silver, nickel, or copper on the surface of fine powder such as ceramics, glass, quartz, or organic resin; a metal compound such as aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride, or zinc oxide, as well as mixtures of two or more thereof. Silver powder, aluminum powder, aluminum oxide powder, zinc oxide powder, aluminum nitride powder, or graphite is particularly suitable. Moreover, if electric insulation is required in the present  composition, metal oxide based powder or metal nitride based powder is preferable, with aluminum oxide powder, zinc oxide powder, or aluminum nitride powder particularly preferable.

[0077] The average particle diameter of such a thermally conductive filler or conductive filler, as the median diameter, is preferably within the range of 1 to 100 μm, particularly preferably within the range of 1 to 50 μm.

[0078] While not particularly limited thereto, the amount of component (B) is from 1 to 95 weight %, preferably from 5 to 90 weight %, more preferably from 10 to 90 weight %, further more preferably from 20 to 85 weight %, further more preferably from 30 to 80 weight %based on the total weight of the composition. This is because, if the amount of component (B) falls within the abovementioned ranges, it is sufficiently to exhibit desired effects of component (B) .

[0079] Component (C)

[0080] In the present invention, component (C) is a characteristic component according to the present invention, and is used as a filler treating agent for promoting flowability of a silicone and filler composition. Specifically, component (C) is a side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane represented by the following general formula (I) : MDxUyM’     (I)

[0081] Wherein D represents an R2SiO2 / 2 unit in which R are in each occurance the same or different monovalent alkyl groups free of epoxy functionality; U represents a epoxy containing unit of R’nR (2-n) SiO2 / 2 in which R is a monovalent alkyl group and R’ is in each occurance the same or different monovalent organic group containing at least one vicinal epoxy group and n has a value from 1 to 2; M and M’ are in each occurance the same or different end-blocking units having the formula of R3SiO1 / 2, wherein R are in each occurance the same or different monovalent alkyl groups free of epoxy groups; x is an integer having a value from 10 to 1,000 and y is an integer having a value from 1 to 100. That is, component (C) of the present invention must possess at least one epoxy functional group on its side chain. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is thought that component (C) can  promote flowability of a silicone and filler composition by means of such pendant groups with epoxy functionality. Particularly, in comparison with siloxanes having epoxy functional groups only at its terminals (so-called “bi-terminal epoxy functional siloxanes” ) , side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxanes like component (C) can greatly promote flowability to a much higher level. Moreover, in comparison with other traditional alkoxy-based polymer filler treating agents in prior arts, side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxanes like component (C) can achieve comparable or even better flowability without generating alcohol and incurring additional costs.

[0082] The upper limit of x / y ratio is not particularly limited, but if the value of x / y is too low, there may be a risk that the number of epoxy groups contained in component (C) will become too many to promote flowability to a desired level. In other words, if the value of x / y is too low, epoxy equivalent weight of component (C) will become too low to achieve its desired effect. Therefore, for the purpose of ensure the ability of component (C) in promoting flowability, it is preferable to adjust epoxy equivalent weight of component (C) into a suitable range. In some embodiments, component (C) possesses an epoxy equivalent weight higher than 350 g / mol, preferably higher than 1,000 g / mol, more preferably higher than 2,000 g / mol, most preferably higher than 3,000 g / mol.

[0083] In some embodiments, pendant groups R’ independently possesses a main chain having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, preferably from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, more preferably from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, further more preferably from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, further more preferably from 3 to 8 carbon atoms, most preferably from 4 to 5 atoms. In some embodiments, the main chains of R’ independently possesses one or two oxygen atoms between two adjacent carbon atoms. In some embodiments, epoxy functional groups locate on the terminals of R’, and independently linked to the terminals of R’ via a direct bond or linkers. In some embodiments, said linkers are selected from the group consisting of an ether group, an ester group, a carbonyl group, and a carbamate group.

[0084] In certain embodiments, R’ may be exemplified by glycidoxymethyl, glycidoxyethyl, glycidoxypropyl, glycidoxybutyl, glycidoxypentyl, glycidoxyhexyl, glycidoxyheptyl, glycidoxyoctyl, glycidoxynonyl, glycidoxydecyl, or similar glycidoxyalkyl groups, wherein the propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl groups contained in the above exemplary R’ may be either linear or branched.

[0085] In some preferable embodiments, said filler treating agent (C) is represented by the following general formula:

[0086] wherein R1, R2 and R3 independently represent pendant groups with epoxy functionality, (n+m) ≥ 1, p ≥ 10. Such specific filler treating agent (C) can achieve better flowability-promoting effect.

[0087] While not particularly limited thereto, the amount of component (C) is from 0.1 to 10 weight %, preferably from 0.2 to 5 weight %, more preferably from 0.3 to 3 weight %, further more preferably from 0.4 to 2 weight %, further more preferably from 0.5 to 1.5 weight %, most preferably from 0.8 to 1.2 weight %based on the total weight of the composition. This is because, if the amount of component (C) falls within the abovementioned ranges, it is sufficiently to exhibit its effect in promoting flowability.

[0088] Other optional components

[0089] The composition of the present invention may further comprise or be free of an an alkyl trialkoxysilane with chemical formula of RfSi (ORg) 3 (Component D) , where Rf is independently in each occurrence an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms; and Rg is independently in each occurrence an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Rg is desirably methyl so as to form methoxy groups attached to the silicon atom. A particularly desirable alkyl trialkoxysilane is methyltrimethoxysilane, n-decyltrimethoxysilane, n-octyltrimethoxysilane or a mixture thereof. Component (D) is useful in preventing filler settling and extend the usable life time of the composition. It  may be present in an amount of from zero to 5 wt%, and can be zero or more, 0.05 wt%or more, 0.08 wt%or more, 0.10 wt%or more, 0.15 wt%or more, even 0.2%or more while at the same time is typically 5 wt%or less, and can be 4.0%or less, 3.0 wt%or less, 2.0 wt%or less, 1.0 wt%or less, 0.5 wt%or less, or even 0.2 wt%or less, based on the weight of the component (A) .

[0090] The composition of the present invention may further comprise or be free of an organopolysiloxane that has at least two, or at least three, silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms per molecule and free of an alkenyl group ( "cross-linker" , component (E) ) . Typically, the amount of polyorganohydrogensiloxane in the composition may be from 0.1 wt%to 20 wt%, and can be 0.1 wt%or more, 0.5 wt%or more, 1.0 wt%or more, 2.0 wt%or more, 3.0 wt%or more, 4.0 wt%or more, 5 wt%or more, or even 7 wt%or more while at the same time is generally 20.0 wt%or less, and can be 18.0 wt%or less, 16.0 wt%or less, 15.0 wt%or less, 12.0 wt%or less, 10.0 wt%or less, or even 8.0 wt%or less, based on the weight of component (A) .

[0091] The composition of the present invention may further comprise or be free of an hydrosilylation reaction catalyst (component (F) ) . Hydrosilylation reaction catalysts are known in the art and are commercially available. Hydrosilylation reaction catalysts include platinum (Pt) group metal catalysts. The amount of the catalyst is sufficient to provide 1 part per million (ppm) to 1000 ppm, and can be 1 ppm or more, 5 ppm or more, 10 ppm or more, 20 ppm or more, even 30 ppm or more while at the same time is generally 1,000 ppm or less, and can be 500 ppm or less, 300 ppm or less, 130 ppm or less, or even 100 ppm or less, of the platinum group metal, based on the weight of component (A) .

[0092] Moreover, the present composition may optionally contain: organic solvents such as toluene, xylene, acetone, methylethyl ketone, methylisobutyl ketone, hexane, and heptane; flame retardants such as aluminium hydroxide; antioxidants such as a hindered phenol based antioxidant; heat resistant agents such as iron oxide; plasticizers such as a dialkylsiloxane oligomer blocked by a hydroxydialkylsiloxy group at both  terminals of a molecular chain; and other pigments, thixotropy imparting agents, and antifungal agents, as long as the present composition does not impair the object of the present invention.

[0093] Process for treating fillers

[0094] In the present invention, a process for treating fillers is also provided. The process comprises a step of mixing the filler (B) with the filler treating agent (C) described above, followed by heating them under vacuum. By means of the above step, the process of the present invention can treat fillers by a specific side-chain grafted epoxy functional siloxane as filler treating agent (C) , and thereby greatly promote flowability of a silicone and filler composition.

[0095] Here, although it is stated that the filler treating agent (C) described above can greatly promote flowability of a silicone and filler composition, since such filler treating agent (C) is used for treating filler (B) , it is not necessarily required to conduct the above step in the presence of organopolysiloxane (A) described above. Accordingly, in some embodiments, the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) are mixed and heated under vacuum in the presence of the organopolysiloxane (A) described above. In some other embodiments, the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) are mixed and heated under vacuum in the absence of the organopolysiloxane (A) described above.

[0096] The time for mixing the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) described above, the number of stages of such mixing, as well as the temperature and time for heating them are not particularly limited, so they can be easily determined as needed on the basis of common knowledge, as long as they can ensure that filler (B) can be sufficiently treated by filler treating agent (C) so as to promote flowability. In some embodiments, mixing of the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) are divided into two or more stages. In some embodiments, the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) are heated under vacuum at from 100℃ to 150℃, preferably from 110℃ to 140℃, more preferably from 120℃ to 130℃ for from 30 min to 120 min, preferably from 45 min to 90 min, more preferably from 60 min to 70 min.

[0097] Moreover, in case the filler (B) and the filler treating agent (C) are mixed and heated under vacuum in the absence of the organopolysiloxane (A) described above, the organopolysiloxane (A) may be added after the completion of treatment of the filler (B) to obtain a silicone and filler composition with high flowability.

[0098] Use of filler treating agent (C)

[0099] As described above, the filler treating agent (C) described above can greatly promote flowability of a silicone and filler composition by using it to treat fillers. Therefore, in the present invention, use of the filler treating agent (C) described in the first aspect in treating fillers is also provided. For example, when using a filler to endow a silicone composition with various featured advantages, including higher modulus, thermal conductivity, electronic conductivity and specific rheology behaviors, it is preferable to treat the filler by the filler treating agent (C) described above prior to or after adding it into the silicone composition.

[0100] Moreover, as said above, by treating the filler (B) by the filler treating agent (C) described above, obtained silicone and filler composition of the present invention can exhibit high flowability, and thus can be preferably used in various application, particularly those require both the use of fillers and high flowability, such as encapsulants, sealants, conformal coatings and thermal interface materials. Therefore, in the present invention, an encapsulant, a sealant, a conformal coating and a thermal interface material, all of which are obtained from the silicone and filler composition with high flowability of the present invention, are also provided. The encapsulant, sealant, conformal coating and thermal interface material of the present invention exhibit high flowability and thus can meet ultra flowability needs.[Examples]

[0101] The following is a more detailed description of the present invention with reference to examples. The present invention, however, is not restricted to these examples. All parts and percentages are by weight unless otherwise specified.

[0102] The information of the raw materials used in Examples is listed in the following Table 1:

[0104] [Inventive Examples 1~2 (Inv-1~Inv-2) and Comparative Examples 1~7 (C-1~C-7) ]

[0105] Inventive Examples 1~2 and Comparative Example 1~7 of the present disclosure were conducted as follow.

[0106] Silicone and Filler Compositions Preparation:

[0107] 1. Mixing

[0108] All the ingredients (unless specially introduced) were added into a 150 mL mixing cup and mixed by FlackTekTM speedmixer for 1 min (1000 rpm for 30 s and 1500 rpm for 30 s) . Then scrape the mixture on cup wall, repeat the mixing twice using FlackTekTM speedmixer for 1 min.

[0109] The mixture was then transferred to Al cup, the cup was covered with Al foil with several holes on it. The cup was then subjected to heating at 120 ℃ for 60 min under vacuum.

[0110] 3. Cooling Down

[0111] After heating and vacuum treatment, the sample was left to cool down at RT for 7 days to provide silicone and filler compositions of Inv-1~Inv-2 and C-1~C-7.

[0112] Representative formulations of the silicone and filler compositions of Inv-1~Inv-2 and C-1~C-7 are shown in Table 2.

[0113] Table 2: Representative Formulations (unit: g)

[0114] Flowability Test:

[0115] Before flowability test, the samples of the silicone and filler compositions of Inv-1~Inv-2 and C-1~C-7 were get mixed by hand for 1 min.

[0116] After mixing, 1 mL sample was drawn into a 2 mL syringe, and then dispensed onto a precleaned glass plate. The sample was flowed into a circle on the plate. After 60 min, the sum of the horizontal and vertical diameter of the circle was measure. The results are summarized in millimeter (Table 3) .

[0117] Table 3: Flowability Results

[0118] *Mono-terminal alkoxy functional siloxane is relatively more difficult (and more expensive) to prepare than side-chain epoxy siloxanes, and it will generate toxic alcohol (methanol in this case) during filler treating in comparison with Inv-1 and Inv-2, and even though with lower viscosity it is only comparable with Inv-1 and even less effective than Inv-2.

[0119] Merely small molecular weight filler treating agent (e.g. Trimethoxy Silane, Alkyl Silane) will only result in poor flowability (C-1, C-2) , and if side-chain amino, hydroxyl and epoxy siloxanes were introduced, the flowability will be improved (C-4, C-5, Inv-1, Inv-2) . However, if terminal type of epoxy  siloxane was used, no significant improvement can be observed (C-6) . The possible explanation for this could be the topological difference, wherein terminal type functional siloxane (e.g. Bi-Terminal Type Epoxy Siloxane) might tend to enhance the interactions between fillers, thus show no improvement to flowability. While the side-chain pendant type is more likely to provide siloxane backbone as a “blanket” for the filler when the function group were attached to the filler surface, which will decouple the unwanted interactions between filler particles or clusters, and promote flowability thereby.

[0120] For side-chain amino siloxane (C-4) and hydroxyl siloxane (C-5) , although they were weaker in promoting flowability when compared with side-chain epoxy siloxanes (Inv-1, Inv-2) , they still show improvement when compared with inert vinyl polymer (C-1) . However, when the epoxy equivalent weight is too low like that in C-7 (Side-Chain Epoxy Siloxane #1, with epoxy equivalent weight of 350 g / mol) , the flowability will be poor. Hypothesis for this scenario is the insufficient length / amount of silicone backbone in Side-Chain Epoxy Siloxane #1, which could not provide enough isolation between fillers.

[0121] When comparing with conventional mono-terminal alkoxy-based polymer filler treating agent (like Mono-Terminal Alkoxy Functional Siloxane in C-3) , side-chain epoxy siloxanes can provide comparable or even better flowability at the same dosage (Side-Chain Epoxy Siloxane #2 in Inv-1, Side-Chain Epoxy Siloxane #3 in Inv-2) . While conventional mono-terminal alkoxy functional siloxane is relatively more difficult (and more expensive) to prepare than side-chain epoxy siloxanes, and it will generate toxic alcohol (methanol in this case of C-3) during filler treating in comparison with Inv-1 and Inv-2, and even though with lower viscosity of mono-terminal alkoxy functional siloxane, its ability to promote flowability is only comparable with Inv-1 and even less effective than Inv-2. Thus side-chain epoxy siloxane exhibits obvious advantages in promoting flowability for filled silicone systems.
