AI Technical Summary
Existing wound dressings are not suitable for open wounds such as burns, cuts, and diabetic wounds, as they do not effectively accelerate healing or reduce chronic inflammation and pain.
A dual-layer wound dressing composed of chitosan and alginate hydrogels, loaded with anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug active ingredients quercetin and naproxen, respectively. The hydrogels are designed to swell and release the active ingredients in a controlled manner to reduce chronic inflammation and promote wound healing.
The wound dressing effectively accelerates the healing of open wounds by reducing long-term chronic inflammation and pain, improving the quality of life for patients, and preventing scarring.
Abstract
Description
[0001] A WOUND DRESSING
[0002] Technical Field
[0003] The present invention relates to a wound dressing which accelerates wound healing and reduces pain by reducing long-term chronic inflammation.
[0004] Background of the Invention
[0005] Today, the use of wound dressings (band-aids) is frequently preferred for some wounds occurring on the skin. However, these wound dressings cannot be used on open wounds such as bums, cuts and diabetic wounds that occur directly on the skin. These wounds either take too long to heal in the natural process or do not heal. In order to make the healing process possible and / or to accelerate it, the wound area should be treated with molecules that enhance wound repair. The materials used on patients in the clinic are solutions that involve the application of wound repair molecules to the area with creams and tapes. For this reason, there is a need for new wound dressings which are suitable for use on open wounds, and which have a wound-healing effect.
[0006] The Turkish patent document no. TR2016 / 16076, an application included in the state of the art, discloses a bioactive wound dressing which is of hydrogel nature containing antimicrobial active ingredient, has a biodegradable structure and carries the healthy autologous cells of the user. By means of the said wound dressing, the cells in the wound area are provided with support for the healing of chronic wounds, i.e. wounds that never heal (such as bedsores), and the risk of infection in the open wound is eliminated. The production method of the wound dressing comprises the steps of synthesizing the hydrogel film material consisting of cellulose by bacteria under predetermined conditions; making the cellulose material biodegradable; adding a predetermined amount of antimicrobial agent into the cellulose material; and loading and reproducing live user cells (autologous cells) into the material. In the method, Acetobacter xylinum bacteria synthesize the hydrogel film consisting of cellulose. In addition, an aldehyde group is produced on the cellulose material and the material is made biodegradable.
[0007] Summary of the Invention
[0008] An object of the present invention is to realize a wound dressing which accelerates wound healing and reduces pain by reducing long-term chronic inflammation.
[0009] Another object of the present invention is to realize a wound dressing which is obtained by loading drug active ingredients with anti-inflammatory and antianalgesic effects into hydrogels that are natural and biocompatible polymers.
[0010] A further object of the present invention is to realize a wound dressing which is used for open wounds in the form of bums, cuts and diabetic foot wounds.
[0011] Detailed Description of the Invention
[0012] The inventive wound dressing which accelerates wound healing and reduces pain by reducing long-term chronic inflammation comprises two layers as the bottom layer that first comes into contact with the open wound on the skin and the top layer above it that is more durable.
[0013] The bottom layer included the inventive wound dressing is obtained by loading the active drug active ingredient quercetin with anti-inflammatory and antianalgesic effects into the natural and biocompatible chitosan hydrogel. The hydrogel prepared with 1 wt% chitosan polymer in the bottom layer has a porous structure consisting of hydrophilic (water-loving) polymers and quercetin drug active ingredients are loaded into these pores in an amount of 10 wt% with respect to the polymer. The chitosan hydrogel in the bottom layer swells by absorbing the water in the wound area and quercetin is released slowly and in a controlled manner depending on the diffusion to the wound area through the opened pores.
[0014] The top layer included in the inventive wound dressing is obtained by loading the active drug active ingredient naproxen with anti-inflammatory and anti-analgesic effects into the natural and biocompatible alginate hydrogel. The hydrogel prepared with 2 wt% alginate polymer in the top layer has a porous structure consisting of hydrophilic (water-loving) polymers and naproxen drug active ingredients are loaded into these pores in an amount of 4 wt% with respect to the polymer. The alginate hydrogel in the top layer swells by absorbing the water in the wound area and naproxen is released slowly and in a controlled manner depending on the diffusion to the wound area through the opened pores.
[0015] The hydrogel structure included in the inventive wound dressing can be produced by transforming the constituent polymer chains into a reticulated structure through different cross-linking strategies.
[0016] The inventive wound dressing is used on open wounds in order to repair open wounds that reduce the quality of life of the patient, especially in the form of burn wounds, cuts and diabetic foot wounds, in a healthy way and to heal them without leaving scars. The said wound dressing is not limited to humans, but is also suitable for effective use on animals.
[0017] Industrial Application of the Invention By means of the inventive hydrogel-based wound dressing, it is enabled to accelerate the long-lasting open wound healing process and to contribute to the quality of life of the patient. Within these basic concepts; it is possible to develop various embodiments of the inventive “A Wound Dressing”; the invention cannot be limited to examples disclosed herein and it is essentially according to claims.
