[0046] Fig. 1 is a flowchart illustrating a method 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 100 can be performed by a first NF.

[0047] At block 110, a first NF transmits, to an NF for network repository, a registration message containing energy related information (or referred to as energy information or EI) of the first NF. Here, the registration message may be an NF service register request or NF service register update request.

[0048] In this context, the NF for network repository refers to an NF implementing / supporting functionality including e.g., network management (for example, maintenance of NF profiles and / or registration of NFs) and / or network / service discovery. The NF for network repository may be for example an NRF in the 5G system.

[0049] Here, the energy related information may be obtained from an energy information source, such as a Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) , an Operation Administration and Maintenance (OAM) system, or any other Energy Collection and Monitoring function.

[0050] In an example, the energy related information may be for retrieval and use by a second NF for NF selection, e.g., selection of an NF from a pool of NFs (for example, an NF set) including the first NF. The NFs in the pool may all be of a same type, e.g., may all be SMFs or UPFs. Here, the first NF may be an NF producer and the second NF may be an NF consumer.

[0051] Here, the energy related information may include at least one of:

[0052] energy consumption, e.g., in Joules, WattH or KWattH;

[0053] a KPI for energy efficiency, e.g., defined as

[0054] a renewable energy ratio, e.g., a ratio of renewable energy to total energy consumed; and

[0055] carbon emission information, e.g., in tons (grams / pounds / kilograms) of carbon dioxide (or million tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) )  / Watth (Kwh) , or MTCO2e / performance.

[0056] In an example, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF with respect to a particular scope. For example, the energy related information may include a scope Information Element (IE) indicating the scope, which may be e.g., an NF Instance (meaning that the energy related information includes information on overall energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF) , NF Set, NF Service Instance, or NF Service Set (for NF producer) , or a Service Communication Proxy (SCP) Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) (for an SCP) , or a Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) FQDN (for an SEPP) . Additionally or alternatively, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF in association with a network slice or a DNN.

[0057] in an example, the energy related information may include a portion attributed to energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of one or more NFs in association with the first NF, e.g., in association with services provided by the one or more NFs fbr use by the first NF. For example, the first NF may be an SMF which uses services provided by three UPFs, UPF 1, UPF2, and UPF3. The SMF has 100 sessions, of which 30%are served by UPF1, 20%are served by UPF2, and 50%are served by UPF3. The SMF knows from energy related information of the UPFs that the energy consumption ofUPF1, UPF2, and UPF3 is 100kWh, 120kWh and 140kWh, respectively. Then, the SMF can add 100kWh*30%=30kWh attributed to UPF 1, 120kWh*20%=24kWh attributed to UPF2, and 140kWh*50%=70kWh attributed to UPF3 to its own energy consumption in its energy related information and send it to the second NF (e.g., an AMF) .

[0058] Fig. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a method 200 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 200 can be performed by a second NF.

[0059] At block 210, the second NF receives, from an NF for network repository, an NF profile of a first NF. The NF profile contains energy related information of the first NF. Here, the first NF may be an NF producer and the second NF may be an NF consumer. The NF for network repository may be an NRF.

[0060] Here, the energy related information may include at least one of: energy consumption, a KPI for energy efficiency, a renewable energy ratio, and carbon emission information.

[0061] In an example, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF with respect to a particular scope. For example, the energy related information includes information on overall energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF. Additionally or alternatively, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF in association with a network slice or a DNN.

[0062] In an example, the energy related information may include a portion attributed to energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of one or more NFs in association with the first NF.

[0063] For further details of the energy related information, reference can be made to the above description of the method 100.

[0064] In an example, the second NF may perform NF selection based on the energy related information, e.g., selection of an NF from a pool of NFs (for example, an NF set) including the first NF. The NFs in the pool may all be of a same type.

[0065] In particular, the second NF may perform NF selection based on a weight corresponding to the energy related information. For example, the second NF, which is an NF consumer and denoted as NFc here, performs NF selection among three NF producers, denoted as NFpl, NFp2, and NFp3, respectively. According to the energy related information of the NF producers, NFc determines corresponding weights for NFp1, NFp2, and NFp3 as 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5, respectively. Then, for each request towards NF producer, NFc selects one of the NF producers such that the request has a probability of 20%to go to NFp1, a probability of 30%to go to NFp2, and a probability of 50%to go to NFp3. As a result, from the perspective of statistics, 20%of requests will go to NFp1, 30%of requests will go to NFp2, and 50%of requests will go to NFp3.

[0066] Fig. 3 is a flowchart illustrating a method 300 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 300 can be performed by an NF for network repository, e.g., an NRF.

[0067] At block 310, the NF for network repository receives, from a first NF, a registration message containing energy related information of the first NF.

[0068] At block 320, the NF for network repository stores the energy related information of the first NF.

[0069] In an example, the NF for network repository may further transmit, to a second NF, an NF profile of a first NF, the NF profile containing energy related information of the first NF.

[0070] Here, the energy related information may include at least one of: energy consumption, a KPI for energy efficiency, a renewable energy ratio, and carbon emission information.

[0071] In an example, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF with respect to a particular scope. For example, the energy related information includes information on overall energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF. Additionally or alternatively, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF in association with a network slice or a DNN.

[0072] In an example, the energy related information may include a portion attributed to energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of one or more NFs in association with the first NF.

[0073] For further details of the energy related information, reference can be made to the above description of the method 100.

[0074] The above methods 100-300 will be further explained below with reference to Figs. 4 and 5.

[0075] Fig. 4 is a sequence diagram showing an example of a process of registering energy related information. As shown, at Step 1, a NF producer (NFp) subscribes or requests for its energy related information (denoted as EI) from an EI source, which may be an NWDAF, an OAM system, or any other Energy Collection and Monitoring function. At Step 2, the EI source returns the energy related information to NFp. At Step 3, in a service registration process, NFp sends an NF service register request containing the EI to an NRF. At Step 4, the NRF replies with an NF service register response. At Step 5, NFp receives an EI update from the EI source. At Step 6, NFp updates the service registration by sending an NF service register update request containing the updated EI to the NRF. At Step 7, the NRF replies with an NF service register update response.

[0076] Fig. 5 is a sequence diagram showing an example of a process of retrieving energy related information. As shown, at Step 1, an NF consumer (NFc) sends a service discovery request to an NRF. At Step 2, the NRF returns a service discovery response containing NF registration information or NF profile of an NF producer (NFp) . The registration information or NF profile contains EI of NFp. Optionally, at Step 3, ifNFc has subscribed for NF registration information update notification, once the NRF receives NF registration information update (containing updated EI) from NFp, the NRF notifies NFc of the NF registration information update. Accordingly, at Step 4, NFc replies with a notification response.

[0077] Fig. 6 is a flowchart illustrating a method 600 according to another embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 600 can be performed by a first NF.

[0080] In an example, the energy related information may be for retrieval and use by a second NF for NF selection, e.g., selection of an NF from a pool of NFs (for example, an NF set) including the first NF. The NFs in the pool may all be of a same type.

[0081] Here, the energy related information may include at least one of: energy consumption, a KPI for energy efficiency, a renewable energy ratio, and carbon emission information.

[0082] In an example, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF with respect to a particular scope. For example, the energy related information includes information on overall energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF. Additionally or alternatively, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF in association with a network slice or a DNN.

[0083] In an example, the energy related information may include a portion attributed to energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of one or more NFs in association with the first NF.

[0091] In an example, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF with respect to a particular scope. For example, the energy related information includes information on overall energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF. Additionally or alternatively, the energy related information may include information on energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of the first NF in association with a network slice or a DNN.

[0092] In an example, the energy related information may include a portion attributed to energy consumption and / or energy efficiency of one or more NFs in association with the first NF.

[0093] For further details of the energy related information, reference can be made to the above description of the method 100.

[0139] Table 2

[0140] The EI scope in this case may be per S-NSSAI / DNN or NF instance (UPF instance) .

[0141] As shown in Fig. 10, at Step 1, an AMF subscribes or requests for its EI from an EI source, which may be an NWDAF, an OAM system, or any other Energy Collection and Monitoring function. At Step 2, the AMF receives an NG setup request from an NG-RAN node. At Step 3, the AMF sends an NG setup response to the NG-RAN node over an N2 interface, the NG setup response containing EI of the AMF. Optionally, at Step 4, the AMF retrieves an EI update from the EI source. At Step 5, the AMF sends an AMF configuration update to the NG-RAN node, the AMF configuration update containing the updated EI. At Step 6, the NG-RAN node replies with an acknowledgement (ACK) .

[0148] Table 5

[0149] The EI Scope in this case may be NF instance (AMF instance) .

[0150] In the following, an example of EI based NF selection according to an embodiment of the present disclosure will be given. In this example, EI the scope of NF instance is used to assist an NFc to select an NFp for energy optimization. The EI based NF selection may be activated only when there is at least one NF producer instance in an NF pool (or NF set) is higher than a predetermined threshold (e.g., 50%) . In a first use case (Case 1) , the objective may be to maintain or increase energy efficiency in a NF set. In this case, the NFc may simply select an NFp instance with a highest current energy KPI for subsequent traffics (service requests) . In a second use case (Case 2) , the objective may be to keep a certain level of load balancing and maintain or increase energy efficiency. In this case, the NF selection may be performed based on a weighted combination of load and energy KPI.
