AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing isocyanate compositions containing free radical initiators suffer from instability during storage, leading to mechanical property degradation and the formation of by-products like polyisocyanurate due to trimerization, which affects the quality of the final polyurethane product.

Method used

Incorporating 8-hydroxyl quinoline and/or its derivatives into the isocyanate composition, along with polyisocyanate and free radical initiators, stabilizes the mixture by suppressing trimerization and reducing the formation of polyisocyanurate, thereby maintaining the composition's stability and shelf life.

Benefits of technology

The stabilized isocyanate composition exhibits prolonged shelf life with reduced viscosity increase and lower by-product formation, ensuring improved mechanical properties of the resulting polyurethane when used in a two-component system.

Description

A Stabilized Isocyanate Composition and Two-component System for Preparing PolyurethaneTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to an isocyanate composition comprising at least one polyisocyanate, at least one free radical initiator, and 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof. The present invention also relates to two-component system for preparing polyurethane comprising the above-mentioned isocyanate composition, and a method for stabilizing the isocyanate composition.BACKGROUND

[0002] Thermoset polyurethanes for various applications are known in principle from the prior art. Generally, thermoset polyurethane is prepared from two-component system, in which component A comprises compounds having at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and other components, such as chain extenders, catalysts or crosslinkers, and component B comprises polyisocyanates. The two components A and B are separately stored before mixing, so as to obtain long shelf life before application of the polyurethane. Free radical initiators are usually added into the system and comprised in component B together the polyisocyanates, especially when the system comprises (meth) acrylates as possible monomers for the polymerization. However, these free radical initiators are prone to decomposing slowly in isocyanates as storing time goes, leading to the final product’s mechanical properties being lower than designed value. Isocyanates containing free radical initiators tend to trimerize during storage, causing the formation of by-product polyisocyanurate.

[0003] To stabilize the isocyanate composition during storage, various compounds having stabilizing effect have been added into the isocyanate composition. WO2022 / 136069A1 discloses a method for stably storing isocyanate composition comprising a free-radical initiator by adding a beta-dicarbonyl compound, which composition has been measured in terms of the viscosity increase under storage at 50℃ for more than 14 days. However, in organic chemistry, the dicarbonyl compound refers to a series of compounds containing two carbonyl (C=O) groups, for instance either or both of them located in neighboring carbon atom or separated with 1 to n carbon atom (s) . The different relative location of such two carbonyl groups leads to distinct stabilizing activity, even though in the art some exemplary compounds were enumerated for readers easily to understand.

[0004] WO2022038015A1 discloses another method for stably storing an isocyanate composition by adding a class of compounds (the so-called inhibitor) , including hindered phenols, amines and sulfurs characterized in conjugated groups contained in their structure. Phenothiazine is an exemplary compound mentioned in the art. However, phenothiazine is well-known as shortstop inhibitor to handle runaway polymerization of acrylic chemicals, owing to the fact that it effectively scavenges free radicals and terminates the chain propagation. As such it is skeptical to apply phenothiazine or hindered amine / phenol compound to stabilize the isocyanate composition containing peroxide initiators. Furthermore, hindered amine, if associated with active hydrogen (s) are reactive to isocyanate, and if associated with no active hydrogen, namely presenting as tertiary amines are well recognized as blown catalyst and trimerizing catalyst of polyurethanes. Such hindered amine, if dosed into isocyanate composition, will lead to side reaction of isocyanates and result in an unstable composition.

[0005] Therefore, it is necessary to formulate a stable isocyanate composition containing free radical initiators (such as peroxides) , in which both isocyanate N=C=O group and peroxide group are stably stored, but also maintain the desired reactive activity when mixed with the corresponding isocyanate-reactive composition to form the polyurethane polymer.

[0057] in which R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, independently from each other, are selected from H, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, and hydroxyl alkyl. Preferably, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, independently from each other, are selected from H, halogen, C1-C6-alkyl, C1-C6-haloalkyl, and C1-C6-hydroxyl alkyl, preferably H, F, Cl, Br, C1-C4-alkyl and C1-C4-hydoxyl alkyl, more preferably H, Cl and C1-C4-alkyl. Exemplary compounds are 8-hydroxy quinoline, 5-methylol-8-hydroxy quinoline, and 5-chloro-8-hydroxyl quinoline shown as below chemical structures. More preferably, component c) is 8-hydroxyl quinoline.

[0058] 8-Hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof can be synthesized by methods known in the art, for example, from Li L. and Xu B. ; Synthesis and characterization of 5-substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives and their metal complexes; Tetrahedron 64 (2008) 10986-10995.

[0059] Based on the total weight of the isocyanate composition, 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof can be present in an amount of 0.01%to 5%by weight, preferably 0.02%to 2%by weight and especially preferably 0.05%to 1%by weight.

[0060] (d) Other additives

[0061] The isocyanate composition of the present invention may further comprise other additives. These additives may include, but not limited to, water scavenger, polymerization inhibitor, thixotropic agent, plasticizer and flame retardant, with the precondition that these additives do not react with isocyanate group or peroxide group in the isocyanate composition.

[0062] For example, water scavengers are substances that can remove water, steam, moisture, and / or vapor from the composition and / or the ambient environment where the composition is stored or used. These include, for example, epoxy resins and / or aluminosilicates. Possible aluminosili-cates are selected from the group of the sodium aluminosilicates, potassium aluminosilicates, calcium silicates, caesium aluminosilicates, barium aluminosilicates, magnesium aluminosili-cates, strontium aluminosilicates, sodium aluminophosphates, potassium aluminophosphates, calcium aluminophosphates, and mixtures thereof. It is particularly preferable to use T-paste as the water scavenger.

[0063] Based on the total weight of the isocyanate composition, said other additives may be in an amount of 0-5 wt%, preferably 0-1 wt%.

[0064] The isocyanate composition of the present invention may comprise polyisocyanurates after storage in amount of less than 5 wt%, preferably less than 1 wt%, based on the total weight of the isocyanate composition. With such reduced amount of by-product, the isocyanate composition can be used as component B to prepare polyurethane directly after storage, and no purification is required.

[0065] In a particular embodiment, the present invention provides an isocyanate composition, comprising

[0066] a) 90-99 wt%, preferably 95-98 wt%, of at least one polyisocyanate,

[0067] b) 0.5-5 wt%, preferably 1-3 wt%, of at least one free radical initiator,

[0068] c) 0.01-5 wt%, preferably 0.05-1 wt%of 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof, and

[0069] d) 0-5%, preferably 0-1 wt%of other additives.

[0070] The isocyanate composition of the present invention can be prepared by mixing components (a) - (c) and optionally component (d) together. Thus, the present invention also relates to a method for stabilizing isocyanate composition during storage, comprising adding 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof into a mixture comprising at least one polyisocyanate and at least one free radical initiator, and obtaining the isocyanate composition according to the present invention.

[0071] After formation, the isocyanate composition may have a viscosity of 50-2000 cps, preferably 100-1000 cps, more preferably 150-500 cps, as determined by cone-plate viscometer at 25℃. The isocyanate composition can be stored under room temperature and ambient pressure, and may have a shelf life of at least 3 months, preferably at least 6 months. During storage, the viscosity of the isocyanate composition will increase to some extent, such as to the range of 200-5000 cps, or 300-1000 cps. However, as compared with the isocyanate composition without any stabilizer, or with conventional stabilizer, such as acetylacetone (ACAC) , the isocyanate composition of the present invention exhibits lower viscosity increase during storage, and thus has prolonged shelf life and reduced amount of by-product. Thus, the present invention also relates to the use of 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof for stabilizing isocyanate composition during storage, wherein the isocyanate composition is an isocyanate composition according to the present invention. It is believed that 8-hydroxyl quinoline and / or derivatives thereof can suppress the reaction between isocyanate groups and free radical initiator (such as peroxide group) and reduce the formation of polyisocyanurate as by-product of trimerization of isocyanates. The formation of polyisocyanurate (PIR) as by-product during the storage of the isocyanate composition can be analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) , and is characterized by band at wavenumber of 1700cm-1 (isocyanurate ring) and 1410 cm-1. By analyzing the change of the signal at these wavenumbers during storage, the formation of PIR and the decreasing effect of the stabilizer for PIR can be determined.

[0072] The isocyanate composition of the present invention can be used directly as component B in the two-component system for the preparation of polyurethanes. In preparing the polyurethanes, the two components, namely components A and B, in the two-component system are mixed together after stored separately, and casted or foamed to obtain polyurethanes. Since the isocyanate composition is more stable and contains reduced amount of by-products, the polyurethanes prepared from such component B will have less influenced mechanical properties.

[0073] Therefore, the present invention further relates to a two-component system for preparing polyurethane, comprising

[0103] Fillers that can be added, in particular reinforcing fillers, comprise the materials known per se which are conventional organic and inorganic fillers, reinforcing agents, and weighting agents. In detail, examples are: inorganic fillers, e.g., silicatic minerals, for example phyllosilicates, such as antigorite, serpentine, hornblendes, amphiboles, chrysotile, zeolites, talc; metal oxides, e.g. kaolin, aluminum oxides, aluminum silicate, titanium oxides, and iron oxides, metal salts, e.g. chalk, barite, and inorganic pigments, such as cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide, and also glass particles. Examples of organic fillers are: carbon black, melamine, collophony, cyclopentadienyl resins, and polymer-modified polyoxyalkene polyols.

[0104] Flame retardants used include flame retardants which comprise expandable graphite and which comprise oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardant. Expandable graphite is well known. This comprises one or more expandable materials, so that considerable expansion takes place under the conditions present in a fire. Expandable graphite is produced by known processes. The usual method here begins by modifying graphite with oxidants, such as nitrates, chromates, or peroxides, or via electrolysis, in order to open the crystal layers, and nitrates or sulfates are then intercalated into the graphite, and can bring about expansion under given conditions. The oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardant preferably comprises no less than 5%by weight of phosphorus content, with the presence of at least 3 phosphate ester units in preferred embodiments. “Phosphorus ester units” here comprise phosphate ester units and phosphonate ester units. The oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardants of the invention therefore comprise structures having pure phosphonate units, having pure phosphate units, and also having phosphonate units and phosphate units.

[0105] It is possible to use one or more arbitrary flame retardant (s) usually used, alongside the oligomeric organophosphorus flame retardants and expandable graphite, for polyurethanes. These comprise halogen-substituted phosphates, such as tricresyl phosphate, tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tris (2-chloropropyl) phosphate, tris (1, 3-dichloropropyl) phosphate, tris (2, 3-dibromopropyl) phosphate, and tetrakis (2-chloroethyl) ethylene diphosphate, and / or inorganic flame retardants, such as red phosphorus, aluminum oxide hydrate, antimony trioxide, arsenic oxide, ammonium polyphosphate, and calcium sulfate, and / or cyanuric acid derivatives, e.g., melamine. It is preferable that the flame retardants comprise no compounds having halogen groups.

[0106] The two-component system of the present invention can be obtained by using the isocyanate composition as stated above as component B and simply mixing components (e) to (g) with or without component (h) as component A, and kept them separately. These components are stable under ambient pressure and room temperature, and can be formulated into ready-use form before application. In the two-component system, the weight ratio of component A and component B is preferably in the range of 1: 1-1.3, more preferably in the range of 1: 1-1.2. In an embodiment, the molar ratio of the total number of the functionalities of the component d) and chain extenders used to the total number of the functionalities of the isocyanate composition used is in the range from 1: 0.8 to 1: 1.3. In an embodiment, the two-component system of the present invention may have a solid content of 98 wt%or above, preferably 99 wt%or above, and more preferably 99.5 wt%or above, measured according to GB / T 16777-2008. That is to say, organic solvent is not required in the two-component system for preparing polyurethanes. In an embodiment, the two-component system of the present invention comprises no organic solvent.

[0107] The present invention also relates to a method for preparing polyurethanes, including the steps of mixing component A and component B in the abovementioned two-component system together and curing the thus formed mixture. The mixing of the component A and component B is preferably accomplished by spraying. In spray coating, the component A and component B can be sprayed by a spraying apparatus with two separate nozzles under elevated pressure in certain weight ratio, preferably in weight ratio of 1: 1-1.3, more preferably 1: 1-1.2, and the thus formed mixture is cured on a substrate. The pressure for the spraying can be 1000 psi or above, or 1300 psi or above, or 1500 psi or above. The curing of the sprayed mixture can be accomplished within, for example, 0.5-8 h, preferably 1-4 h, more preferably 1-2 h. In an embodiment, the component A and component B are sprayed in the form of powders, and upon mixing, these components begin to react with each other immediately and are cured within a short period.

[0108] In an embodiment, the polyurethane can be prepared by the two-component system as described above in one step. Here “in one step” is to be understood as meaning that the components for preparing the polyurethane, i.e., components (a) to (g) with or without (h) , are all mixed immediately before commencement of the reaction and the reaction is subsequently carried on to obtain a cured polyurethane material without the admixture of further compounds and especially without admixture of further compounds comprising isocyanate-reactive groups. The isocyanate index during production of the polyurethane is from 90 to 130, preferably from 95 to 120, and more preferably 100-110. For the purposes of the present invention, this isocyanate index is the stoichiometric ratio of isocyanate groups to groups reactive toward isocyanate, multiplied by 100. Groups reactive toward isocyanate here are any of the groups which are present in the reaction mixture and reactive toward isocyanate.

[0109] Once cured, the polyurethane formed from the two-component system of the present invention acquires excellent physical properties. Particularly, owing to the stability of the isocyanate composition, the physical properties of the polyurethane prepared therefrom are less influenced, and fewer impurities are contained therein.Examples

[0110] The present invention will now be described with reference to Examples and Comparative

[0111] Examples, which are not intended to limit the present invention.

[0112] The following materials were used:

[0113] Isocyanate: Polymeric MDI, commercially available from BASF as Lupranate M20s, with a functionality of approximately 2.7 and an NCO content of 31.5%.

[0114] 5-chloro-8-hydroxyl quinoline, CAS No. 130-16-5, available from OKA.

[0115] 8-hydroxyl quinoline, CAS No. 148-24-3, available from OKA.

[0116] Peroxide initiator: tert-butyl peroxybenzoate available from Sinopharm, purity 98%, CAS No. 614-45-9.

[0117] Measurement Method:

[0118] Viscosity is measured by Thermal Scientific HAAKE Viscotester 550 at 25℃.

[0119] Example 1:

[0120] 98 parts by weight of Lupranate M20s and 2 parts by weight of tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) as initiator were mixed together in a 1L vessel under ambient pressure at 25℃ for 5 min. Then, 0.02 parts by weight of 8-hydroxyl quinoline was added into the mixture, and stirred to obtain a uniform composition. The thus obtained composition was stored in an oven at 50℃. Samples were taken out from the composition at different days (days 0, 1, 5, 7, 14 and 21) to test the viscosity thereof using Thermal Scientific HAAKE Viscotester 550 at 25℃, respectively.

[0121] Example 2:

[0122] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.05 parts by weight of 8-hydroxyl quinoline was added into the mixture.

[0123] Example 3:

[0124] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.10 parts by weight of 8-hydroxyl quinoline was added into the mixture.

[0125] Example 4:

[0126] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.15 parts by weight of 8-hydroxyl quinoline was added into the mixture.

[0127] Example 5:

[0128] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.02 parts by weight of 5-chloro-8-hydroxyl quinoline were used instead of 8-hydroxyl quinoline.

[0129] Comparative example 1:

[0130] Pure Lupranate M20s without addition of any initiator and stabilizer was stored in the same manner as in example 1, and the viscosity thereof was tested and recorded at different days using Thermal Scientific HAAKE Viscotester 550 at 25℃, respectively.

[0131] Comparative example 2:

[0132] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that no stabilizer was added into the mixture.

[0133] Comparative example 3:

[0134] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.02 parts by weight of ACAC was used instead of 8-hydroxyl quinoline.

[0135] Comparative example 4:

[0136] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.10 parts by weight of ACAC was used instead of 8-hydroxyl quinoline.

[0137] The viscosity changes of examples 1-5 and comparative examples 1-4 after stored for different days were tested using Thermal Scientific HAAKE Viscotester 550 at 25℃, respectively, and the results were summarized in the following table 1.

[0138] It can be seen from the above table that, upon the addition of free radical initiator, the viscosity of the isocyanate composition increased dramatically after stored for 7 days, and could not be tested after stored for 14 days. For this reason, stabilizer was added into the composition. ACAC, as a conventionally used stabilizer in the prior art, could effectively reduce the viscosity rise during storage of the isocyanate composition comprising free radical initiator. However, 8-HQ and 5-Cl-8-HQ exhibited better performance than ACAC as stabilizer for the isocyanate composition under the same addition amount (inventive examples 1-5 vs. comparative examples 3-4) . It can be seen from the above table that, when the amount of 8-HQ is as low as 0.02 %, it still could achieve the effect of lowering the viscosity increase during the storage of the isocyanate composition.

[0139] Example 6:

[0140] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.20 parts by weight of 8-hydroxyl quinoline was added into the mixture.

[0141] Example 7:

[0142] The procedure was performed in the same manner as in example 1, expect that 0.10 parts by weight of 5-chloro-8-hydroxyl quinoline were used instead of 8-hydroxyl quinoline.

[0143] Polyurethane samples were prepared from the isocyanate compositions of examples 1-4 and 6-7 and comparative example 4 and polyols, and the physical properties of these samples were tested, respectively. The isocyanate index was 102%. The results were shown in the following table 2.

[0144] Table 2: The physical properties of PU made from the isocyanate compositions of examples 1-4 and 6-7 and comparative example 4

[0145] It can be seen from the above table that, the PU samples prepared from the isocyanate compositions of examples 1-4 and 6-7 and comparative example 4 had comparable physical properties. It was suggested that side reactions of isocyanate groups were suppressed due to existence of 8-HQ. The resulted low viscosity of isocyanate component is good for processes such as vacuum infusion, especially for vacuum infusion of large profiles. Manufacturing of large profiles usually takes a long time and requires the polyol and isocyanate components to possess low viscosity to ensure a good processability. The addition of 8-HQ and / or derivatives thereof can extend the shelf life of isocyanate component and thus render the storage and application of two-component polyurethane system convenient to use.

[0146] The structures, materials, compositions, and methods described herein are intended to be representative examples of the invention, and it will be understood that the scope of the invention is not limited by the scope of the examples. Those skilled in the art will recognize that the invention may be practiced with variations on the disclosed structures, materials, compositions and methods, and such variations are regarded as within the ambit of the invention. Thus, it is intended that the present invention cover such modifications and variations as come within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents.
