Abstract
Description
POLYAMIDE / POLYKETONE BLENDS AND ARTICLES PRODUCED FROM THE SAMEFIELD OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to polyamide / polyketone blends comprising a polyamide component and a polyketone component, and articles produced from the same.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONVarious polymer blends have been developed and commercialized either for synergistic perfor-mance or for cost-performance balance. In recent years, there is an increasing interest in blends of polyamide (PA) and polyketone (PK) due to their compatibility with each other and the comple-mentary properties thereof.Polyamide (also referred to as nylon) is a kind of polymer containing repeating amido moieties (-CONH-) in main chains, which has already been widely used as a base resin for engineering plastics for years in various industries such as automotive and appliance due to its good proces-sibility, mechanical properties and low cost.Polyketone, a relatively new type of thermoplastic copolymers of carbon monoxide and olefins, has excellent toughness, low moisture absorption, good tribological properties and chemical re-sistance, which could help to remedy shortcomings of polyamide materials. The blends of poly-amide and polyketone may combine advantages of both polymers and thus allow to provide ma-terials with balanced mechanical properties, good chemical resistance and low moisture absorp-tion, which broadens the field of application of polyamide materials.Polyamide / polyketone (PA / PK) blends can be readily prepared via melt blending technologies such as twin-screw extrusion and micro compounding. Despite those advantages of such polymer blends, the PA / PK blends exhibit obvious yellowness which would limit their application, as col-orability is one important aspect for engineering plastic products. The yellowish color of PA / PK blends becomes a challenge for developing the PA / PK blends into product.Solutions to the yellowing problem of polyamide materials or polyketone materials have been proposed in the art, for example CN105980469A and WO2018026047A1.CN105980469A describes a method for reducing color changes during heating a polymer com-position comprising at least one thermoplastic polyamide B) , which comprises the use of a poly-olefin copolymer A) , wherein the polyolefin copolymer A) comprises at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer Ma and at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer Mb in copol-ymerized form. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer Ma is selected from C2-C10 alkenes and vinylaromatic compounds, and the monoethylenically unsaturated monomer Mb is selected from monoethylenically unsaturated C3-C23 monocarboxylic acids; esters of monoethylenically unsatu-rated C3-C23 monocarboxylic acids N-C1-C8-alkyl-substituted amides of monoethylenically un-saturated C3-C23 monocarboxylic acids; monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C20 dicarboxylic acids; monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C20 dicarboxylic anhydrides; monoesters of monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C20 dicarboxylic acids; diesters of monoethylenically unsaturated C4-C20 dicarbox-ylic acids; vinyl esters of C1-C10 monocarboxylic acids; allyl esters of C1-C10 monocarboxylic acids; monoethylenically unsaturated oxiranes.WO2018026047A1 describes a method for producing polyketone composition having reduced yellowness index (YI) by blending and extruding a small amount of maleic anhydride and maleic anhydride copolymer into the polyketone as obtained from the initial polymerization process. There is a need of solution to solve the yellowing of polyamide / polyketone (PA / PK) blend materi-als, which is much severer than the yellowing of polyamide materials and the yellowing of polyketone materials.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe object of the present invention is to provide a yellowness-resistant polyamide / polyketone blend material, preferably having desirable mechanical and processing properties. It has been found that the object can be achieved by combining a polyamide derived from polymerization of a lactam or an aminocarboxylic acid of no more than 11 carbon atoms, a polyketone and a copolymeric additive having a high functionality of maleic anhydride, or by com-bining a polyamide derived from polymerization of a lactam or an aminocarboxylic acid of no more than 11 carbon atoms and having a low content of amino end-groups with a polyketone.Accordingly, the present invention provides a polyamide / polyketone composition, which com-prises(A) a polyamide derived from polymerization of a lactam or an aminocarboxylic acid with no more than 11 carbon atoms,(B) a polyketone,(C) a maleic anhydride copolymer, which has at least 10%by weight of maleic anhydride mono-meric units, based on the weight of the maleic anhydride copolymer,(D) optionally, a reinforcing agent, and(E) optionally, at least one additional additive,or(A’) a polyamide derived from polymerization of a lactam or an aminocarboxylic acid with no more than 11 carbon atoms and having a content of amino end-groups in the range of less than 15mmol / kg, based on the weight of the polyamide,(B) a polyketone,(D) optionally, a reinforcing agent, and(E) optionally, at least one additional additive. The present invention also provides an article produced from the polyamide / polyketone compo-sition as described herein. The present invention further provides use of a maleic anhydride copolymer having at least 10%by weight of maleic anhydride monomeric units in polyamide / polyketone compositions for inhibit-ing yellowing of the polyamide / polyketone compositions upon compounding. It has been surprisingly found that the polyamide / polyketone composition according to the present invention exhibits a good resistance to yellowing resulted from compounding, while maintaining desirable mechanical and processing properties.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGSFigure 1 includes graphs showing viscosity changes of PA6 / PK blends during time sweep in rhe-ology study at 230 ℃ and 260 ℃ respectively.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention will be described in detail hereinafter. Tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break were measured according to ISO 527-1-2012. Test specimens of type 1 having thickness of 4 mm as described in ISO 527-1-2012 were used.Charpy notched impact strength was measured according to ISO 179-1-2010 via edgewise im-pact. Test specimens for Charpy notched test is type 1 with notched type A having a dimension of 80 u 10 u 4mm (length u width u thickness) .The test specimens were pretreated in air under a humidity of 50%at 23 ℃ for 16 hours.2. Spiral flow length was measured by injecting test specimens in molten state into a spiral cas-sette mold (Axicon) of 2 mm thickness at a speed of 42.4 mm / s. The injecting was conducted by an Arburg 370 moulding machine with a melting temperature of 260 ℃ and a molding temperature of 80 ℃.3. Friction coefficient was measured by multi-purpose wear test system MPW110 from NeoPLUS, with the thrust washer mode. The specimens were molded into a ring shape and a steel ring (made of S45C Steel) was used as counter body during sliding. The measurement was conducted under a pressure of 0.52 MPa and a sliding speed of 280 mm / sin air at room temperature. The fiction coefficient within 2 hours was recorded.4. Delta E (ΔE) was determined by colorimeter (BYK Gardner) with a plaque of pure PA6 (B22) as the control, to characterize the color performance of test specimens. The test specimens as used were prepared according to the following general procedure, unless otherwise specified.General Procedure for Preparing the Test SpecimensTest specimens were prepared in accordance with the formulations as shown in following Tables, unless otherwise specified. All raw materials were mixed together in a Tubula T50A high-speed stirrer and fed into an extruder (e.g., Coperion ZSK18 MC twin-screw extruder) at the throat, then melt-extruded under a temperature of 250 ℃, and pelletized and dried at a temperature of 80 ℃ for 4 hours, thus obtaining dried pellets. The dried pellets were then processed in an injection molding machine (Haitian MA900 II) with a clamping force of 900 kN at a melt temperature of 245 ℃ and a molding temperature of 50 ℃ to provide a test specimen.Example 1 Evaluation of Yellowness Inhibition for Various Additives6 types of additives with different contents of maleic anhydride units (MAH) or epoxy functional groups were evaluated for their yellowness inhibition effect in a PA6 / PK blend. The compounding was conducted with a mini-extruder DSM Xplore with 20 cc volume, under a temperature of 240 ℃ and a screw speed of 80 rpm, with a retention time of 3 mins. Then, plaques with a di-mension of 30 mm u 30 mm u1.35 mm were molded through the mini-extruder with a melt tem-perature of 240 ℃ and a moulding temperature of 50 ℃.Formulations and corresponding visual yellowness rating for the plaques are listed in Table 1.Table 1*rating by visual: “0” meaning no yellow color, “1” to “5” indicating increasing degree of yellowness. As shown by the results, the yellowing problem of PA / PK blend is much severer than that of PA or PK alone (Sample 1-3 vs. Samples 1-1 and 1-2) . After including the six polymeric additives, only the maleic anhydride copolymer having a high content of MAH monomeric units (E60P) can substantially remedy the high yellowness resulted from the blending of PA and PK.Example 2 Evaluation of Yellowness for PA / PK blends with Various Types of PAPA / PK blends from 4 types of polyamide were evaluated for their yellowing and thus the yellow-ness inhibition through the maleic anhydride copolymer. The compounding was conducted using a ZSK18 MC twin-screw extruder with a melting temperature of 260 ℃, shear rate of 300 rpm, and throughput of 7 kg / hour. Plaques with a dimension of 2 mm u 60 mm u 60 mm were prepared via molding by an Arburg 370 molding machine with a melting temperature 260 ℃ and a moldin temperature of 80 ℃.Formulations and corresponding color performance of the plaques are listed in Table 2.Table 2With including the maleic anhydride copolymer having a high content of MAH monomeric units (E60P) , the PA6 / PK blends (Samples 2-7 and 2-11 to 2-13) exhibit the greatest reduction of ΔE values relative to corresponding control PA6 / PK blend without E60P (Sample 2-3) . In contrast, the inclusion of the same maleic anhydride copolymer does not provide effective yellowness in-hibition for other PA / PK blends, as shown by the minor changes in the ΔE values of the blends with E60P (Samples 2-8 to 2-10) relative to corresponding blends without E60P (Samples 2-4 to 2-6) . In other words, the yellowness is inhibited by E60P to the greatest extent for PA6 / PK blend among all PA / PK blends.Example 3 Evaluation of Flowability for PA / PK blendsPA / PK blends were evaluated for the flowability. Formulations and corresponding visual yellow-ness rating and Melt Volume-Flow Rate results for the extruded polymer pellets from Coperion ZSK18 MC twin-screw extruder are listed are listed in Table 3.Table 3*rating by visual: “0” means no yellow color, “1” to “5” is increased degree of yellowness. As shown by the results, E60P is more effective than ADR 4468 for inhibiting yellowness of PA / PK blends upon compounding. Additionally, E60P did not result in a material decrease in flowability or can even improve the flowability in a relatively high dosage as shown by Sample 3-7.To further evaluate the melt stability of different blends, representative samples 3-1, 3-4, 3-6 and 3-7) were characterized for rheology at temperatures of 230 ℃ and 260 ℃ respectively. Time sweep with shear rate of 1 s-1 and 1 %deformation was performed at each temperature and the complex viscosity of polymer melt was recorded. The results are shown in Figure 1. It was obvi-ously found that at 260 ℃ (i.e., processing temperature during compounding) , EP60 can reduce complex viscosity and therefore benefit processibility during compounding. The result is con-sistent with the MVR results shown in Table 3.Example 4 Evaluation of Yellowness-Inhibition for PA / PK blends with Various Types of PKPA / PK blends using various types of PK were evaluated for yellowness resulted from compound-ing and for mechanical and processing properties. Formulations and corresponding test results are listed are listed in Table 4.Table 4Example 5 Evaluation of Yellowness-Inhibition for PA / PK blends with Various Amino End-Group Contents of PAPA / PK blends using PA6 having various amino end-group contents were evaluated for yellowness resulted from compounding and for mechanical properties. Formulations and corresponding test results are listed are listed in Table 5.Table 5As shown, the PA / PK blend using PA6 having a low amino end-group content (Sample 4-10) has better color performance and good mechanical properties. It will be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art that various modifications and variations can be made in the present invention without departing from the scope or spirit of the present invention. It is intended that the embodiments and examples be considered as exemplary only. Thus, it is intended that the present invention covers such modifications and variations as come within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents.
