It is a diagram showing an example of the operation procedure of the information providing system in a modified example.
[0012] Hereinafter, an embodiment will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0013] 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of the configuration of an information providing system according to an embodiment. The information providing system 1 includes one or more server devices 10, one or more roadside devices 12, and one or more terminal devices 14, which are connected to each other via a network 11 so as to be able to communicate information with each other.
[0014] The server device 10 is, for example, a server computer that belongs to a cloud computing system or other computing system and functions as a server that implements various functions. The server device 10 may be composed of two or more server computers that are connected to each other so that they can communicate information and operate in cooperation with each other. The server device 10 corresponds to the "information processing device" in this embodiment.
[0015] The network 11 is, for example, the Internet, but may also include a mobile communication network, an ad-hoc network, a local area network (LAN), a metropolitan area network (MAN), or other networks, or any combination thereof.
[0016] The roadside device 12 is a portable device that is installed at any point along the roadway 16, such as the end of the sidewalk closer to the roadway 16, and is configured to be operable, for example, by an internal battery. The roadside device 12 captures images of pedestrians 13 walking along the sidewalk, and outputs various types of information to the pedestrians 13 to assist them in walking based on the captured images. The roadside device 12 is also configured to be able to communicate information with the server device 10 via the network 11.
[0017] The terminal device 14 is a smartphone, tablet terminal, or in-vehicle device having communication and information processing functions, and is connected to the network 11 via mobile communication. The terminal device 14 is used by an occupant of the vehicle 15. The terminal device 14 is provided with an interface that accepts operations for inputting various information by the occupant and outputs various information to the occupant. The vehicle 15 is an autonomous vehicle whose driving is automated at any level (for example, any of levels 1 to 5 of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)) while being assisted appropriately by the occupant. The vehicle 15 may be an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle that uses battery power for at least a portion of its driving energy.
[0018] In the information provision system 1, the roadside device 12 outputs information (hereinafter referred to as notification information) for displaying on the terminal device 14 location information indicating the location of the roadside device 12 when the pedestrian 13 was detected and pedestrian information indicating the pedestrian 13. When the notification information is sent to the terminal device 14 via the server device 10, the terminal device 14 presents the notification information to the occupant. The notification information is displayed, for example, as an image. The roadside device 12 can be used as a sign indicating the boundary between the roadway 16 and a sidewalk that is temporarily determined due to an event, construction, or the like in a city block. The occupant can recognize the location where the roadside device 12 is installed from the location information displayed as an image. The occupant can then recognize the presence of a pedestrian detected by the roadside device 12 from the pedestrian information displayed as an image together with the location information. Even when a plurality of roadside devices 12 are installed within the driving range of the vehicle 15, the occupant can relatively easily grasp a relatively large amount of information, such as the installation locations of each roadside device 12 and the presence of pedestrians, through images before the vehicle 15 reaches the installation location of each roadside device 12. Therefore, according to this embodiment, it is possible to reduce the burden on the occupant when providing information to alert the occupant of the vehicle.

[0039] Fig. 5 is a diagram showing the operation procedure of the information providing system 1, and is a sequence diagram showing an example of the procedure of the linked operation of the server device 10, the roadside device 12, and the terminal device 14. The steps relating to various information processing in the server device 10, the roadside device 12, and the terminal device 14 in Fig. 5 are executed by the respective control units 23, 33, and 43. Furthermore, the steps relating to the transmission and reception of various information in the server device 10, the roadside device 12, and the terminal device 14 are executed by the respective control units 23, 33, and 43 transmitting and receiving information to each other via the communication units 21, 31, and 41, respectively. In the server device 10, the roadside device 12, and the terminal device 14, the control units 23, 33, and 43, respectively, store the information to be processed and transmitted and received in the storage units 22, 32, and 42, respectively, as appropriate.
[0040] In step S51, the roadside device 12 acquires location information. The control unit 33 of the roadside device 12 acquires location information of the location where the roadside device 12 is installed using the positioning unit 34. The roadside device 12 is portable and can be installed at any location depending on the purpose, and step S51 is executed at least once after the roadside device 12 is installed at the desired location. Step S51 may be executed at any interval, for example, every few hours.
[0041] In step S52, the roadside device 12 captures an image of the surroundings. The imaging unit 37 of the roadside device 12 captures a visible light image of the surroundings of the roadside device 12, including the sidewalk, at a frame rate that is set arbitrarily, and sends the captured image to the control unit 33.
[0042] In step S53, the roadside device 12 detects pedestrians. The control unit 33 performs any image processing, such as pattern recognition, on the captured image of the sidewalk to detect an image showing a person, thereby detecting the pedestrians 13. The control unit 33 detects the number, positions, and behavior of the pedestrians 13. For example, the movement of the pedestrians 13 is detected as the behavior of the pedestrians 13 from changes over time in the captured image.
[0043] In step S54, the roadside device 12 sends notification information to the server device 10. The notification information includes location information and pedestrian information. The location information indicates the location of the roadside device 12 when the pedestrian 13 was detected, i.e., the installation location of the roadside device 12. The pedestrian information is information indicating the pedestrians 13, including the number and behavior of the pedestrians 13. The behavior of the pedestrians 13 indicates whether the pedestrians are stationary or moving. The behavior of the pedestrians 13 is determined by the control unit 33, for example, based on changes over time in the captured image. If the amount of displacement of the image of the pedestrian 13 is less than an arbitrary standard, the pedestrian 13 is considered stationary, and if the amount of displacement is equal to or greater than the standard, the pedestrian 13 is considered moving. Alternatively, the pedestrian information may include one or more captured images containing the pedestrian 13. The server device 10 receives the information sent from the roadside device 12.
[0044] In step S55, the roadside device 12 outputs warning information. The warning information is information transmitted by flashing an LED light, sound, or the like. The sound may be, for example, a warning message such as "Watch out for vehicles" or "Watch out when crossing." The warning information is output to warn the pedestrian 13 to be careful when crossing the roadway 16.
[0045] In step S56, the server device 10 sends the notification information received from the roadside device 12 to the terminal device 14. If the server device 10 receives notification information from multiple roadside devices 12, the server device 10 sends multiple pieces of notification information to the terminal device 14. The terminal device 14 receives the information sent from the server device 10.
[0046] In step S57, the terminal device 14 acquires location information. The control unit 43 of the terminal device 14 acquires location information of the current location using the positioning unit 44. Step S57 is executed at any cycle, for example, every tens of microseconds to every few seconds.
[0047] In step S58, the terminal device 14 outputs the notification information sent from the server device 10. The control unit 43 causes the output unit 46 to display the notification information as an image.
[0048] 6 is a diagram showing an example of display of notification information, which shows an example of transition of screens 60 to 62 displayed by the output unit 46 of the terminal device 14.
[0049] The screen 60 shows an image in which an object 63 indicating the current position of the terminal device 14, i.e., the vehicle 15, and objects 64-1 and 64-2 indicating the positions of multiple roadside devices 12 are superimposed on a map. The control unit 43 derives the position of the object 63 on the map using the acquired position information of the terminal device 14, and superimposes the object 63 on the map. The control unit 43 also derives the positions of the objects 64-1 and 64-2 on the map using point information included in the notification information, and superimposes the objects 64-1 and 64-2 on the map. Displaying the screen 60 allows the occupant of the vehicle 15 to visually grasp the position of their own vehicle and the installation locations of nearby roadside devices 12.
[0050] The screen 61 shows an image representing a pedestrian 13 at the installation location of one roadside device 12. For example, when the occupant performs an operation, such as a tap operation, to select one of objects 64-1 or 64-2 indicating the location of the roadside device 12 on the screen 60, the control unit 43 transitions the screen 60 to screen 61, displaying objects 65-1, 65-2, and 65-3 indicating the presence, number, and state of pedestrians 13 at the installation location of the selected roadside device 12. In this example, objects 65-1, 65-2, and 65-3 representing three pedestrians 13 are displayed. Furthermore, the objects 65-1 and 65-2 each represent that the corresponding pedestrian 13 is moving, in a manner different from that of object 65-3, which indicates that the corresponding pedestrian 13 is stationary. Furthermore, the screen 61 may include information such as the name 66-1 of the installation location of the selected roadside device 12, a timestamp 66-2 at which the pedestrian 13 was detected, and a distance 66-3 from the vehicle. The name of the installation location of the roadside device 12 and the distance from the vehicle are derived from, for example, map information. The timestamp is, for example, attached to the pedestrian information and sent from the roadside device 12. By displaying the screen 60, the occupant of the vehicle 15 can visually grasp in advance the presence of the pedestrian 13 near the installation location of the selected roadside device 12 before arriving at the installation location.
[0051] Screen 62 shows another image representing a pedestrian 13 at the installation location of one roadside device 12. For example, when the occupant selects one of objects 64-1 and 64-2 indicating the location of the roadside device 12 on screen 60, the control unit 43 transitions screen 60 to screen 62, displaying objects 67-1, 67-2, and 67-3 indicating the presence, number, and behavior of pedestrians 13 at the installation location of the selected roadside device 12. In this example, text information such as "medium" or "near" indicating the distance of the corresponding pedestrian 13 from the roadside device 12 is added to objects 67-1 to 67-3. The control unit 33 of the roadside device 12 can derive the distance of the pedestrian 13 from the roadside device 12 using an arbitrary algorithm from the captured image. Screen 62 may also display a map 68 on which object 64-1 indicating the installation location of the selected roadside device 12 is superimposed, as well as a still or video image 69 captured by the roadside device 12. By displaying such screen 62, the occupants of the vehicle 15 can visually grasp in advance and in detail the presence of pedestrians 13 near the installation location of the selected roadside device 12 before arriving at the installation location.
[0052] As described above, according to this embodiment, the terminal device 14 displays notification information to the occupants of the vehicle 15 as an image, thereby reducing the burden on the occupants in providing information to alert them.
[0053] Fig. 7 is a diagram showing a procedure that is a modification of the procedure shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 differs from Fig. 5 in that steps S50, S51a, S51b, and S54b are added, and step S54 in Fig. 5 is replaced with step S54a. Below, the differences from Fig. 5 will be explained, and explanations of the same points as Fig. 5 will be omitted where appropriate.
[0054] In a modified example, when the roadside device 12 is installed at an arbitrary location, the roadside device 12 accepts an initial setting operation from the operator in step S50. In response to the initial setting operation, the roadside device 12 acquires location information in step S51. Then, in step S51a, the roadside device 12 sends identification information for each roadside device 12 along with the location information to the server device 10. The identification information is pre-stored in the storage unit 32. Then, in step S51b, the server device 10 associates the location information with the identification information and stores them in the storage unit 22. Furthermore, when the roadside device 12 detects a pedestrian 13 in step S53, the roadside device 12 sends the pedestrian information along with the identification information of the roadside device 12 to the server device 10 in step S54a. Then, in step S54b, the server device 10 reads out the location information stored in association with the identification information from the storage unit 22 and stores it in the acquired information. In this way, in step S56, the server device 10 sends notification information including the location information and pedestrian information of the roadside device 12 to the terminal device 14. Even in this modification, the terminal device 14 displays the notification information as an image for the occupants of the vehicle 15, so it is possible to reduce the burden on the occupants in providing information to alert them.
[0055] In another variant, each time the terminal device 14 acquires location information, it sends the location information to the server device 10, and the server device 10 generates a map image in which the location information of the roadside device 12 and the location information of the terminal device 14 are superimposed, and sends this to the terminal device 14 together with notification information.
[0056] In the above description, the imaging unit 37 of the roadside device 12 corresponds to the "detection means," but the "detection means" may also be a means capable of detecting the number and position of pedestrians 13, such as an infrared sensor or an ultrasonic sensor.
