Abstract
Description
[0001] Multi-piece blank and tray obtained therefrom
[0002] The present invention relates to a multi-piece blank of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard, and a tray obtained from folding such a blank.
[0003] As it is known, corrugated cardboard is composed of a fluted paper core sandwiched between and bonded to inner and outer paper face liners.
[0004] According to the prior art, any kind of box is produced from one or more specific blanks of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard in dependence on the intended use and distribution channel. Hence, the present trends towards multiple formats, smaller volumes and customization dramatically increase the burden on production lines for adapting to such different requirements.
[0005] One object of the present invention is thus reducing the burden imposed by such articulated and various requirements on the production lines.
[0006] According to the present invention, this object is achieved by means of a blank comprising:
[0007] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a left panel connected to the bottom panel, and wherein said third crease line defines a right panel connected to the bottom panel,
[0008] - a bottom compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard comprising a quadrangular bottom reinforcing panel and at least one reinforcing flap or panel connected to the bottom reinforcing panel through at least one fourth crease line, wherein said bottom reinforcing panel is glued to an inner face of said bottom panel and said at least one reinforcing flap or panel is contiguous to at least one of said rear, front, left and right panels, wherein said at least one fourth crease line is parallel to at least one of said first, second and third crease lines. A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a tray obtained from a multipiece blank comprising:
[0009] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a quadrangular rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a left panel connected to the bottom panel and two left flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively, and wherein said third crease line defines a right panel connected to the bottom panel and two right flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively,
[0010] - a bottom compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two fourth parallel crease lines defining a series of a rear reinforcing flap, a quadrangular bottom reinforcing panel and a front reinforcing flap, wherein said bottom reinforcing panel is glued to an inner face of said bottom panel, and said rear and front reinforcing flaps are contiguous to an inner face of said rear and front panels, respectively, wherein said fourth crease lines are parallel to said first crease lines, wherein the rear panel with the rear reinforcing flap, and the front panel with the front reinforcing flap, are folded at 90° about the respective first crease line contiguous to the bottom panel and respective crease line contiguous to the bottom reinforcing panel, forming opposite rear and front tray walls, wherein the flaps of the rear and front panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, wherein the left and right panels are folded about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, so that the left and right panels are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps of the rear and front panels, forming a pair of opposite left and right tray walls.
[0011] A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a tray obtained from a multipiece blank comprising:
[0012] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a left panel connected to the bottom panel, wherein said third crease line defines a right panel connected to the bottom panel, wherein one of said first crease lines further defines two rear flaps connected to the left panel and right panel, respectively, and wherein the other of said first crease lines further defines two front flaps connected to the left panel and right panel, respectively,
[0013] - a bottom compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard comprising two fourth parallel crease lines defining a series of a first side reinforcing panel, quadrangular bottom reinforcing panel and dividing panel, and
[0014] - a side compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard comprising a second side reinforcing panel and a reinforcing flap connected to said side reinforcing panel through a fifth crease line, wherein said bottom reinforcing panel is glued to an inner face of said bottom panel and said first side reinforcing panel is contiguous to an inner face of one of said left and right panels, wherein said second side reinforcing panel is contiguous to an inner face of the other of said left and right panels, and said reinforcing flap is glued to the inner face of said bottom panel, wherein said fourth and fifth crease lines are parallel to said second and third crease lines, wherein the left panel with the respective side reinforcing panel, and the right panel with the respective side reinforcing panel, are folded at 90° about the respective second and third crease lines contiguous to the bottom panel and about the respective fourth and fifth crease lines, forming opposite left and right tray walls, wherein the flaps of the left and right panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the first crease lines, wherein the rear and front panels are folded about the first crease lines, so that the rear and front panels are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps of the left and right panels, forming a pair of opposite rear and front tray walls, wherein the dividing panel is folded at 90° about the respective fourth crease line contiguous to the bottom reinforcing panel.
[0015] According to the invention, by changing size and marginal features of the blank, it is possible to produce different trays satisfying quite different requirements.
[0016] According to the present invention, the performance of the cardboard or cartonboard used is optimized by using strengthening members where they are most needed and thus lightening the general structure of the tray, which is thus fundamentally different from the conventional one due to the significant increase in performance.
[0017] The strength-conferring material is allocated only where it is needed, so that the quantity of fiber is dramatically lower in comparison with conventional chassis. Such a reduction is rendered possible by the use of the compression members which confer the required strength.
[0018] According to the prior art, the final tray is produced from a blank or chassis, in the entirety of which the quantity of fiber and the board grade are adapted to the performances required for the intended application.
[0019] On the contrary, according to the present invention, the manufacturing of chassis of different board grades is avoided and the chassis can be produced with the lightest weight, whereas the satisfaction of different requirements is allowed by selection of the proper size and material grade of the compression members.
[0020] The gist of the present invention thus resides in the presence of the compression members, whose size can vary and provide the flexibility necessary for adapting to the different requirements with the lowest possible weight obtainable today on a corrugator.
[0021] In particular, the application of the bottom compression member increases torsional stiffness of overall pack without need to add fiber across entire blanks. This application also offers potential to increase burst strength in required areas. Furthermore, the compression members can be printed to facilitate registered inside print.
[0022] Further advantages and features of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings, in which: figures 1 and 2 are exploded perspective views of a blank according to the invention, figure 3 is a plan view of the blank of figures 1 and 2, figure 4 is a perspective view of a tray obtained from the blank of figures 1-3, figure 5 is a perspective view of the tray of figure 4, wherein a part has been removed, figure 6 is an exploded perspective view of a further blank according to the invention, figure 7 is a perspective view of the blank of figure 6, figure 8 is a perspective view of a tray obtained from the blank of figures 6-7.
[0023] A blank (see figures 1 to 3) comprises a chassis 10 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard and a bottom compression member 30 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard which can be of the same or different kind as the cardboard or cartonboard of the chassis 10. The flutes of the cardboard of the bottom compression member 30 may be substantially orthogonal or parallel to the flutes of the cardboard of the chassis 10.
[0024] The chassis 10 has a series of two first parallel crease lines 12a-b, and a second and a third crease line 14a, 14b intersecting the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b.
[0025] The first, second and third crease lines 12a-b, 14a, 14b define a series of a quadrangular rear panel 16, a quadrangular bottom panel 18 and a short front panel 20. As used herein, terms as "bottom", "back", "front", "top" and the like refer to the display configuration of the box which will be illustrated in the following with reference to figures 4-5.
[0026] Furthermore, the second crease line 14a defines a left panel 22 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two left flaps 24 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively. The third crease line 14b defines a right panel 26 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two right flaps 28 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively. The width of the flaps 24, 28 is preferably about half of the length of the portions of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b defining the bottom panel 18.
[0027] As used herein, the front panel 20 is designated as “short” in that it is, or comprises at least a portion (preferably, a central portion), shorter than the rear, left and right panels 16, 22, 26, as can be seen in the erected configuration of the box, shown in figures 4-5. The second and third crease lines 14a, 14b are orthogonal to the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b and parallel to each other, so that the panels 16 and 18 are substantially rectangular, including the particular case of “square”.
[0028] A perforated or notched detachment line 20c is formed transverse to the front panel 20. This perforated or notched detachment line 20c defines, in the front panel 20, a preferably U-shaped bottom portion 20a and a top portion 20b separated by the perforated or notched detachment line 20c. At least one aperture 29 is formed through the top portion 20b of the front panel 20 in order to facilitate handling.
[0029] The bottom compression member 30 has a series of two fourth parallel crease lines 32a-b defining a series of a rear reinforcing flap 34, a quadrangular bottom reinforcing panel 36 and a front reinforcing flap 38.
[0030] As shown in figures 2-3, the bottom compression member 30 is glued to an internal face of the chassis 10. More specifically, the bottom reinforcing panel 36 is glued to an inner face of the bottom panel 18. The rear and front reinforcing flaps 34, 38 are contiguous to an inner face of the rear and front panels 16, 20, respectively. The fourth crease lines 32a-b are, therefore, parallel to the first crease lines 12a-b. According to some embodiments, the rear and front reinforcing flaps 34, 38 can be glued to the inner face of the rear and front panels 16, 20, respectively.
[0031] A multi-piece tray T (see figure 4) is obtained from the previously disclosed blank by substantially conventional automatized methods of folding, possibly providing also for using, if necessary, glue and / or adhesive tape.
[0032] In particular, one of such methods provides for:
[0033] - folding the rear panel 16 with the rear reinforcing flap 34 at 90° about the respective first crease line 12a contiguous to the bottom panel 18 and respective fourth crease line 32a contiguous to the bottom reinforcing panel 36, so as a rear tray wall is formed,
[0034] - folding the front panel 20 with the front reinforcing flap 38 at 90° about the respective first crease line 12b contiguous to the bottom panel 18 and respective fourth crease line 32b contiguous to the bottom reinforcing panel 36, so as a front tray wall is formed, opposite to the rear wall,
[0035] - folding the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20 at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b,
[0036] - folding the left and right panels 22, 26 about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b, so that the left and right panels 22, 26 are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20, forming a pair of opposite left and right box walls.
[0037] The bottom wall of the tray, as well as comer areas between the bottom wall and the rear wall, and between the bottom wall and the front wall, are reinforced by the bottom compression member 30.
[0038] A pulling action can be exerted on the front panel 20 by gripping on the aperture 29 formed in the front panel 20. Consequently, a removable portion of the front panel 20 formed by the top portion 20b of the front panel 20 gets detached from the bottom portion 20a of the front panel 20 as a result of the laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 20c (see figure 5).
[0039] The top portion 20b can be removed, while the tray T serves as a display for the articles contained therein (not shown).
[0040] Figures 6-8 illustrate a second embodiment of blank and tray, respectively, wherein features equal or equivalent to the ones disclosed with reference to the embodiment of the previous figures have the same reference number.
