Description

METHOD FOR SHUTTING DOWN A CELL OF ONE OR MORE CELLS OF A BASE STATION FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATION, A METHOD FOR ACTIVATING SUCH CELL AND SYSTEM COMPRISING THE BASE STATION AND A SECOND BASE STATIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a base station (BS) for wireless communication, wherein a second BS is configured to serve a traffic of the cell of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The disclosure relates to a method for activating a cell of one or more cells of a BS, the cell being in a shutdown state, wherein at least a part of the traffic that was served by the cell of the BS before the shutdown of the cell is served by a second BS.The disclosure relates to systems comprising a BS for wireless communication having one or more cells and a second BS for wireless communication having one or more cells, wherein the second BS is configured to serve a traffic of a cell of the one or more cells of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The second BS may be configured to perform a dynamic energy-saving method for decreasing its energy consumption. Especially, this disclosure relates to improving an overall energy saving of the BS and the second BS.BACKGROUND

[0002] Base station (BSs) for wireless communication may have one or more cells for serving user equipments (UEs) . The term “user” may be used as a synonym for UE. The energy consumption of BSs can vary significantly based on the hardware employed in their realization and their capabilities.SUMMARY

[0003] The energy consumption of a BS may be a sum of the static energy consumption of the BS and the dynamic energy consumption of the BS. The static energy consumption of the BS remains constant and is independent of the traffic load. The dynamic energy consumption of the BS is traffic load-dependent (depends on the traffic load of the BS) and typically scales linearly with the amount of traffic being served by the BS. To mitigate the energy consumption of a BS having one or more cells a shutdown method and / or a dynamic energy-saving method may be performed. For example, the shutdown method comprises shutting down a cell of the one or more cells of the BS. For this, specific components, such as transceivers and power amplifiers, of the BS related to the cell may be deactivated to reduce static energy consumption. This may be done for example in case of a low-traffic period of the cell. The dynamic energy-saving method may comprise making optimal adjustments to the transmit power and the number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) to minimize dynamic energy consumption.

[0004] Energy-saving methods have primarily focused on reducing static energy, as it traditionally constituted the largest portion of the overall energy consumption. However, with the continual decrease in static energy consumption over the years, the energy savings achieved through shutdown methods are expected to become comparable to those achieved by dynamic energy-saving methods.

[0005] Considering a BS and a second BS each having one or more cells, wherein the second BS is configured to serve a traffic of a cell of the one or more cells of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS, the following scenario may occur. The BS may intend to shut down the cell of its one or more cells to mitigate its statistic energy consumption. The second BS may perform a dynamic energy-saving method for decreasing its energy consumption. The dynamic energy-saving method may comprise a power control and link adaptation. The dynamic energy-saving method may comprise reducing the total dynamic power  during transmission time intervals (TTIs) with small data to transmit. This reduction may be achieved by using more physical resource blocks (PRBs) , and reducing the power spectral density per resource element (RE) . This may comprise lowering the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index. This scheduling method ensures lower energy consumption for sending same amount of data of a legacy scheduling method. The potential savings in dynamic energy by performing the dynamic energy-saving method depends on the number of additional PRBs ( “extra PRBs” ) that can be allocated by the second BS to its users. The quantity of additional PRBs that can be allocated depends on the existing load of the second BS. For example, when the second BS experiences high traffic demand, the pool of PRB resources available for deployment via the dynamic energy-saving method diminishes, thereby limiting the opportunity for dynamic energy reduction by the second BS.

[0006] Upon the shutdown of the cell of the BS, at least a part of the traffic served by the cell before the shutdown is anticipated to be transferred to the second BS. That is, at least a portion of the user equipments (UEs) being served by the cell being shut down is anticipated to migrate to the second BS after shutdown of the cell of the one or more cells of the BS.

[0007] The impact on the energy consumption of the second BS is twofold in the aforementioned scenario. The second BS allocates additional PRBs to serve the traffic transferred from the BS (i.e. to serve the new UEs mitigate from the BS) . This increases the energy consumption of the second BS. This increased PRB load of the second BS diminishes the available spectrum resources for extending PRBs to the UEs already served by the second BS, reducing the potential for energy savings and resulting in increased energy consumption.

[0008] Assume that the shutdown of the cell of the one or more cells of the BS results in an energy saving of X1 watts; and this shutdown action leads to an increase of X2 watts in energy consumption at the second BS compared to the state when the cell of the one or more cells was active (i.e. not shutdown) .

[0009] If the energy saved at the BS represented by X1 exceeds the energy increase at the second BS represented by X2, then the decision to shut down the cell of the one or more cells of the BS is advantageous. Namely, in such a scenario, the network's overall energy consumption (i.e. the energy consumption by the BS and the second BS) decreases by the following: X1 –X2 Watts (> 0) .

[0010] However, in case the energy consumption save X1 at the BS due to the shutdown of the cell is smaller than the increase X2 of the energy consumption at the second BS due to the shutdown of the cell (i.e. X1 < X2) , the overall energy consumption of the network is increased. That is, the saving of the energy consumption at the BS comes at the expense of a greater energy consumption at the second BS resulting in an overall energy consumption of the network.

[0011] In view of the above, this disclosure aims to provide an improved method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a BS for wireless communication. Especially an objective of this disclosure is to provide a method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a BS for wireless communication that is improved with regard to energy consumption.

[0012] These and other objectives are achieved by the solution of this disclosure as described in the independent claims. Advantageous implementations are further defined in the dependent claims.

[0013] A first aspect of this disclosure provides a method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a base station (BS) for wireless communication. The method comprises generating energy consumption information of a second BS for wireless communication that maps different traffic conditions of the second BS to a respective energy consumption at the second BS, the second BS being configured to serve a traffic of the cell of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method comprises estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, an increase of the energy consumption  at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method comprises estimating a decrease of an energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method comprises determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS. The method comprises performing, by the BS, the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and not performing the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result.

[0014] In other words, the first aspect proposes a method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a BS, wherein the method considers the effect of the shutting down of the cell of the BS on the energy consumption of the BS and the effect of the shutting down of the cell of the BS on a second BS that will serve at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS once that cell is in the shutdown state. This allows performing the shut down only when the overall energy consumption of both, the BS and the second BS, is decreased by the shutdown. Thus, the method of the first aspect is improved with regard to energy consumption as it allows a shutting down of the cell of the BS only in case the overall energy consumption is decreased. Therefore, the method of the first aspect allows preventing a scenario where the shutting down of the cell of the BS will decrease the energy consumption at the BS but at the same time will cause an increase of energy consumption at the second BS such that the overall energy consumption of the BS and the second BS is increased (despite the local decrease of energy consumption at the BS) . Additionally, the method of the first aspect allows preventing a scenario where the shutting down of the cell of the BS may cause a decrease of possibility to perform dynamic energy saving by the second BS as less resources (i.e., PRBs) are available (i.e., for extension) due to the increased traffic at the second BS caused by the shutting down of the cell of the BS such that the overall energy consumption of the BS and the second BS is increased.

[0015] Therefore, when the second BS performs a dynamic energy-saving method for saving energy (i.e. decreasing an energy consumption) at the second BS, the method of the first aspect allows coordinating the energy saving method of shutting down a cell at the BS with the dynamic energy-saving method of the second BS. As a result, the method of the first aspect allows preventing an interference between the energy saving of the BS and the energy saving of the second BS, wherein the interference results in an unwanted increase of the overall energy consumption because of a limited capability for dynamic energy saving due to the less available resources. In other words, the method of the first aspect allows taking into account a broader perspective of network-level energy consumption and savings.

[0016] The method of the first aspect allows evaluating the potential impact of a shutdown of a cell of a BS on the energy consumption of a neighbouring BS, i.e. the second BS, that will serve at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown. The method allows leveraging this information to determine the feasibility of shutdown in terms of network energy savings, i.e. in terms of the overall energy consumption of the BS and the second BS.

[0017] For example, if the energy savings achieved through the shutdown of the cell of the BS exceeds the increase in energy consumption observed in the second BS (i.e. the neighbouring BS) , the BS is authorized to perform the shutdown. Conversely, if the energy saved falls short of compensating for the rise in energy consumption in the second BS, the shutdown process is not performed.

[0018] The BS and the second BS may be mobile BSs. The BS and the second BS may be for example a 4G BS or a 5G BS. The BS and the second BS may be configured for WiFi wireless communication. That is, they may optionally be WiFI base station. The BS and the second BS are not limited to a specific type of BS and may be any known type of BS for any known type of wireless communication. The BS and the second BS may be configured to transmit and receive radio waves for the wireless communication. The BS may be referred to as “first BS” for distinguishing it from the second BS. The second BS may be referred to as “neighbouring BS” with regard to the BS.

[0019] The energy consumption information of the second BS serves to correlate the traffic conditions encountered by the one or more cells of the second BS with the energy consumption of the second BS. For example the energy consumption information may associate the downlink physical resource block (DL PRB) load of the one or more cells of the second BS (i.e., the quantity of spectrum resources) with the energy consumption of the second BS. Accordingly, energy consumption information of the BS serves to correlate the traffic conditions encountered by the one or more cells of the BS with the energy consumption of the BS. Herein, a description with regard to the energy consumption information of the second BS may be correspondingly valid for an energy consumption information of the BS and vice versa.

[0020] The second BS may have a cell that is a co-coverage neighboring cell and paired with the cell of the BS to be shut down. This allows the second BS to serve at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The BS and the second BS may perform a cell pairing. In case the BS has only one cell, shutting down the cell corresponds to shutting down the BS.

[0021] A decrease of energy consumption equals to an energy saving. That is, a decrease of energy consumption at an entity, such as the BS or the second BS, equals to an energy saving at said entity.

[0022] Herein, the traffic of an entity, such as a BS or a cell of a BS, is understood to be the traffic being served by the entity, such as the BS or the cell of the BS. The term “energy consumption data” or “energy consumption data set” may be used as synonyms for the term “energy consumption information” . Herein, the passage “energy consumption of an entity (e.g. the BS or the second BS) ” and the passage “energy consumption at an entity (e.g. the BS or the second BS) ” are used as synonyms. Herein, the term “power consumption” may be used instead of the term “energy consumption” .

[0023] The traffic being transferred to the second BS and, thus, being served by the second BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS may be a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS or the traffic of the cell of the BS.

[0024] In an implementation form of the first aspect, determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS comprises determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS and an energy consumption offset.

[0025] This allows to set a minimum amount of energy saving of the overall energy consumption that should be achieved by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The greater the energy consumption offset the greater said minimum amount of energy saving and vice versa. Moreover, the energy consumption offset allows for setting a margin in the condition validation, providing room to account for factors like confidence in estimation accuracy.

[0026] Optionally, determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS may be determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS and an energy consumption offset.

[0027] Optionally, an additional threshold may be added to the sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS and the energy consumption offset to prevent a ping-pong effect of shutdown decision.

[0028] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises generating, by the second BS, the energy consumption information of the second BS. The method may comprise transmitting, by the second BS, to the BS the energy consumption  information of the second BS and information on a traffic of the second BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the BS, the increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the information on the traffic of the second BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the BS, the decrease of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method may comprise determining, by the BS, whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS.

[0029] In other words, the estimation of the impact of the shutdown of the cell of the BS on the second BS may be assessed at the BS and the decision of performing the shutdown or not based on said estimation may be made at the BS.

[0030] The second BS may generate the energy consumption information of the second BS by computing, optionally periodically computing, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS. Optionally, in case the second BS performs a dynamic energy-saving method, the second BS may compute, optionally periodically compute, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS when using the dynamic energy-saving method. In addition or alternatively, the second BS may generate the energy consumption information of the second BS by measuring the energy consumption of the second BS at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS and storing the measurement results in association with the respective traffic conditions (e.g. in a look-up table) . The second BS may do this periodically and / or when performing a dynamic energy-saving method.

[0031] Optionally, the second BS periodically transmits the energy consumption information. The second BS may periodically transmit the information on the traffic of the second BS. The second BS may transmit to the BS the energy consumption information and the information on the traffic of the second BS at regular intervals or upon demand from the BS. The information on the traffic of the second BS may comprise or may be a physical resource block (PRB) load of the second BS.

[0032] The energy consumption information of the second BS may be transmitted at a frequency aligned with the transmission of the information on the traffic of the second BS. The energy consumption information of the second BS may be transmitted in response to a request / demand from the BS. The energy consumption information of the second BS may be transmitted during a cell pairing of the BS and the second BS (e.g. in case the information is assumed to change in time) , optionally transmitted once during such cell pairing (e.g. in case the information is assumed to not change in time) . Optionally, universal energy consumption information is used as the energy consumption information of any one of the cells and, thus, as the energy consumption information of the second BS. Optionally, the energy consumption information of the second BS may be generated and shared by a node within a core network, providing network-level analytics, or by a management layer. The aforementioned is correspondingly valid for energy consumption information of the BS and transmission of the energy consumption information from the BS to the second BS.

[0033] The estimations steps and determination step may be performed multiple times in a given time window.

[0034] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises generating, by the second BS, the energy consumption information of the second BS; estimating, by the BS, a traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS from the BS to the second BS; and transmitting, by the BS, to the second BS the estimated traffic. The method may comprise estimating, by the second BS, the increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic. The method may comprise transmitting, by the second BS, to the BS the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS.

[0035] In other words, the estimation of the impact of the shutdown of the cell of the BS on the second BS may be assessed at the second BS and the decision of performing the shutdown or not based on said estimation may be made at the BS.

[0036] The BS may start the procedure for shutting down the cell of the BS (comprising a determination whether such a shutdown is to be done with regard to an overall energy consumption) by transmitting to the second BS the estimated traffic.

[0037] The second BS may generate the energy consumption information of the second BS by computing, optionally periodically computing, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS. Optionally, in case the second BS performs an dynamic energy-saving method, the second BS may compute, optionally periodically compute, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS when using the dynamic energy-saving method.

[0038] The second BS may leverage the information received from the BS, i.e. the estimated traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS from the BS to the second BS, to estimate the increase of its energy consumption resulting from an augmented traffic load at the second BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS.

[0039] The estimations steps and determination step may be performed multiple times in a given time window.

[0040] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises generating, by the second BS, the energy consumption information of the second BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the BS, a traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS from the BS to the second BS and the decrease of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method may comprise transmitting, by the BS, to the second BS the estimated traffic and the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the second BS, the increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic. The method may comprise determining, by the second BS, whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS. The method may comprise transmitting, by the second BS, to the BS a result of the determination.

[0041] In other words, the estimation of the impact of the shutdown of the cell of the BS on the second BS may be assessed at the second BS and the decision of performing the shutdown or not based on said estimation may be made at the second BS.

[0042] The BS may start the procedure for shutting down the cell of the BS (comprising a determination whether such a shutdown is to be done with regard to an overall energy consumption) by transmitting to the second BS the estimated traffic and the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS.

[0043] The second BS may generate the energy consumption information of the second BS by computing, optionally periodically computing, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS. Optionally, in case the  second BS performs n dynamic energy-saving method, the second BS may compute, optionally periodically compute, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the second BS when using the dynamic energy-saving method.

[0044] The second BS may leverage the information received from the BS, i.e. the estimated traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS from the BS to the second BS, to estimate the increase of its energy consumption resulting from an augmented traffic load at the second BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS.

[0045] The estimations steps and determination step may be performed multiple times in a given time window.

[0046] In an implementation form of the first aspect, estimating the decrease of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS comprises considering the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down.

[0047] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises generating energy consumption information of the BS that maps different traffic conditions of the BS to a respective energy consumption at the BS, and activating the cell of the BS from a shutdown state. The activating comprises estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, a decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by a transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after an activation of the cell of the BS. The activating comprises estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS. The activating comprises determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS. The activating comprises performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result. The activating comprises not performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result.

[0048] The activating steps may be periodically performed. Thus, it may be periodically determined whether it is beneficial with regard to an overall energy consumption to activate the cell of the BS being in the shutdown state. The cell of the BS being in the shutdown state may be referred to as “dormant cell” .

[0049] For example, the BS may generate the energy consumption information of the BS by computing, optionally periodically computing, the energy consumption at different traffic conditions experienced by the BS. In addition or alternatively, the BS may generate the energy consumption information of the BS by measuring the energy consumption of the BS at different traffic conditions experienced by the BS and storing the measurement results in association with the respective traffic conditions (e.g. in a look-up table) . The BS may do this periodically.

[0050] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises determining an energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down, and estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the BS and the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down, the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS.

[0051] The method may comprise estimating a traffic of the second BS and the traffic of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS. The method may comprise determining an energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down. The decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS may be estimated using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic of the second BS. The increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS may be estimated using the energy consumption information of the BS, the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down and the estimated traffic of the BS.

[0052] In an implementation form of the first aspect, determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS comprises determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS and an energy consumption offset.

[0053] This allows to set a minimum amount of energy saving of the overall energy consumption that should be achieved by the activation of the cell of the BS. The greater the energy consumption offset the greater said minimum amount of energy saving and vice versa. Moreover the energy consumption offset allows for setting a margin in the condition validation, providing room to account for factors like confidence in estimation accuracy.

[0054] Optionally, determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS may be determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS and an energy consumption offset.

[0055] Optionally, an additional threshold may be added to the sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS and the energy consumption offset to prevent a ping-pong effect of activation decision.

[0056] In an implementation form of the first aspect, estimating the decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS comprises estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS and a traffic of the second BS, the energy consumption at the second BS; estimating a traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS; estimating, by using the traffic of the second BS and the estimated traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS, the traffic of the second BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS; estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic of the second BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS; and computing a difference between the estimated energy consumption at the second BS and the estimated energy consumption at the second BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS.

[0057] In an implementation form of the first aspect, estimating the traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS comprises estimating a traffic redirected, when the cell of the BS is activated, from the second BS to the BS using historical data on the traffic redirected, when the cell of the BS is activated, from the second BS to the BS; and / or estimating a percentage of the traffic being moved, after shutdown of the cell of the BS, to the second BS as the traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS to be the traffic. Optionally, the percentage may be 100%.

[0058] For example, an observation may reveal that in previous (past) instances of the activation of the cell of the BS, x%of the PRBs of the second BS were redirected to the BS. Thus, the estimated traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of  the cell of the BS may be assumed to be the aforementioned x%of the PRBs of the second BS. For example, when the cell of the BS is being shut down, the PRBs at the second BS may have increased by y%. The same percentage may be applied to estimate the PRBs that will be redirected to the BS upon activation of the cell of the BS. That is, the estimated traffic of the cell of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS may be assumed to be the aforementioned y%of the PRBs of the second BS.

[0059] In an implementation form of the first aspect, estimating the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS comprises estimating a traffic of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS; estimating, using the energy consumption information of the BS and the estimated traffic of the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS; determining an energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down; and computing a difference between the estimated energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS and the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down.

[0060] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the method comprises generating, by the BS, the energy consumption information of the BS. The method may comprise transmitting, by the BS, to the second BS the energy consumption information of the BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the second BS, the decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the second BS. The method may comprise estimating, by the second BS, the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the BS. The method may comprise determining, by the second BS, whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS. The method may comprise transmitting, by the second BS, to the BS a result of the determination.

[0061] In other words, a shutdown cell of the BS may be activated, wherein the decision-making process, whether such activation is advantageous with regard to an overall energy consumption may be made at the second BS.

[0062] The second BS may periodically determine whether it is beneficial with regard to an overall energy consumption to activate the cell of the BS being in the shutdown state. Optionally, on a periodic basis or when specific events are triggered (e.g., when the load surpasses a certain threshold) , the second BS may estimate the decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the second BS. For this the second BS may estimate its new traffic in the event that the cell of the BS is activated. The second BS may estimate, optionally simultaneously, the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the BS. For this the second BS may estimate the traffic of the cell of the BS in the event that the cell of the BS is activated

[0063] The estimations steps and determination step may be performed multiple times in a given time window.

[0064] The method may comprise determining, by the BS, the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down; transmitting, by the BS, to the second BS information on the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down; and estimating, by the second BS the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS using the energy consumption information of the BS and the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down.

[0065] In an implementation form of the first aspect, determining the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down comprises predetermining the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down in dependence on a hardware and / or function of the BS. Determining the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down may comprise using cell-level counters to estimate an energy consumption at the BS when the cell of the BS is shut down.

[0066] The term “gauge” may be used as a synonym for the term “estimate” .

[0067] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the energy consumption information of the second BS maps different physical resource block, PRB, loads of the second BS to the respective energy consumption. Estimating the increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS, may comprise: estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the PRB load of the second BS, the energy consumption at the second BS; estimating a PRB load of the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS; estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated PRB load of the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS; and computing a difference between the estimated energy consumption at the second BS and the estimated energy consumption at the second BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS.

[0068] In an implementation form of the first aspect, estimating a PRB load of the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS comprises computing a sum of the PRB load of the second BS and the PRB load of the cell of the BS. Estimating a PRB load of the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS may comprise computing a sum of the PRB load of the second BS and an output of a function to which the downlink (DL) traffic volume of the cell of the BS and / or an indicator related to a spectral efficiency of one or more user equipments (UEs) of the cell of the BS after having moved to the second BS are input.

[0069] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the second BS performs a dynamic energy-saving method for decreasing the energy consumption at the second BS, and the energy consumption information of the second BS maps different PRB loads and for each of the different PRB loads different numbers of PRBs to be added to the respective PRB load to a respective loss in the dynamic energy-saving. Estimating the increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS may comprise: estimating a number of PRBs used at the second BS, after shutdown of the cell of the BS, to serve a traffic of the cell of the BS moved to the second BS; and estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, the PRB load of the second BS and the estimated number of PRBs, the loss in the dynamic energy-saving caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS.

[0070] In other words, the energy consumption information of the second BS maps, for different PRB loads and for each of the different PRB loads for different number of PRBs to be added to the respective PRB load, a pair of a PRB load and a number of PRBs to be added to the PRB load to a respective loss in the dynamic energy-saving. The loss in the dynamic energy-saving caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS may be used as the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method may comprise estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the PRB load of the second BS, the energy consumption at the second BS.

[0071] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the number of PRBs used at the second BS, after shutdown of the cell of the BS, to serve the traffic of the cell of the BS moved to the second BS is estimated to be the PRB load of the cell of the BS. The number of PRBs used at the second BS, after shutdown of the cell of the BS, to serve the traffic of the cell of the BS moved to the second BS may be estimated to be an output of a function to which the downlink (DL) traffic volume of the cell of the BS and / or an indicator related to a spectral efficiency of one or more user equipments (UEs) of the cell of the BS after having moved to the second BS are input.

[0072] In an implementation form of the first aspect, measurement report data are input to the function, the measurement report data comprising received signal strength indicator (RSRP) measurements concerning the second BS and the cell of the BS for each UE served by the cell of the BS. In addition or alternatively, historical data may be input to the function, the historical data comprising past RSRP measurements concerning the second BS and the cell of the BS for each UE served by the cell of the BS.

[0073] For example, if the RSRP of a UE with respect to the second BS is 3 dB less than the RSRP with respect to the BS, the corresponding spectral efficiency may experience a 10%reduction. In case of using the historical data, data observations may be systematically collected every time the cell of the BS is deactivated, allowing for the assessment of how the spectral efficiency distribution of UEs associated with the second BS is affected. When using a look-up table for storing data, historical data collected by cell counter (s) and comprising traffic and energy statistics may be used to populate the look-up table.

[0074] The energy consumption information of the second BS may be stored in a look-up table. The look-up table may map different PRB loads to a respective energy consumption; or map different PRB loads and for each of the different PRB loads different numbers of PRBs to be added to the respective PRB load to a respective loss in n dynamic energy-saving. Alternatively, the aforementioned maps may be depicted as a function captured by a machine learning model (e.g., artificial neural networks, gradient boosting machines, etc. ) .

[0075] For example, the machine learning model may be an artificial neural network (ANN) . The ANN may be trained using historical data collected at the second BS, e.g. focusing on traffic and energy consumption statistics recorded by cell-level counter (s) . The energy consumption statistics capture the amount of energy used by the second BS, while the traffic statistics provide a comprehensive overview of the traffic serviced, which may comprise metrics like one or more of the number of PRBs utilized in downlink / uplink (DL / UL) , the DL / UL data volume in bits, and channel quality statistics. After the training is completed, the parameters of the ANN, such as the weights and biases of the neural connections are stored for local use and / or may be shared among BSs (e.g. provided by the second BS to the BS) .

[0076] Optionally, the energy consumption information of the second BS may undergo periodic re-generation, such as periodic re-computation and / or periodic measuring of energy consumption at different traffic conditions, within a time window spanning multiple hours. This approach allows for tracking the impact of changing UE channel quality on the achieved dynamic energy savings. In optional cases where the second BS performs multiple dynamic energy-saving methods (i.e. multiple such methods coexist) , multiple energy consumption data sets of the second BS may be used (e.g. for each multi dynamic energy-saving method a respective energy consumption data set (i.e. energy consumption information) of the second BS may be used) . For example, distinct energy consumption information of the second BS may be generated for each dynamic energy-saving method, with the relevant one (corresponding to the employed dynamic energy-saving method) being shared. Optionally, a singular energy consumption information of the second BS corresponding to the worst-case scenario is created and shared.

[0077] The description with regard to the energy consumption information of the second BS may be correspondingly valid for the energy consumption information of the BS.

[0078] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the second BS performs a dynamic energy-saving method for decreasing the energy consumption at the second BS.

[0079] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the dynamic energy-saving method comprises a power control and link adaptation.

[0080] In other words, the dynamic energy-saving method may comprise a combination of a power control and link adaptation.

[0081] In an implementation form of the first aspect, the cell of the BS is a capacity cell, and the second BS provides one or more coverage cells.

[0082] The cell of the BS to be shut down may be paired with a coverage cell of the second BS. This paired coverage cell may be referred to as “co-coverage neighboring coverage cell” or “co-coverage neighboring basic cell” . That is, co-coverage relationships may be established between the cell of the BS to be shut down and a coverage cell of the second BS. The term “basic cell” may be used as a synonym for the term “coverage cell” . The capacity cell may be a high-band cell. The coverage cells may be low-band cells that provide basic coverage. Coverage cells are typically not shut down.

[0083] In order to achieve the method according to the first aspect of this disclosure, some or all of the implementation forms and optional features of the first aspect, as described above, may be combined with each other.

[0084] A second aspect of this disclosure provides a method for activating a cell of one or more cells of a base station (BS) , the cell being in a shutdown state. At least a part of the traffic that was served by the cell of the BS before the shutdown of the cell is served by a second BS. The method comprises estimating, by using energy consumption information of the second BS, a decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by a transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption information of the second BS mapping different traffic conditions of the second BS to an respective energy consumption at the second BS. The method comprises estimating, by using energy consumption information of the BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption information of the BS mapping different traffic conditions of the BS to an respective energy consumption at the BS. The method comprises determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS. The method comprises performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and not performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result.

[0085] The above description of the method according to the first aspect is correspondingly valid for the method of the second aspect. The method of the second aspect and its implementation forms and optional features achieve the same advantages as the method of the first aspect and its respective implementation forms and respective optional features.

[0086] A third aspect of this disclosure provides a system comprising a base station (BS) for wireless communication having one or more cells and a second BS for wireless communication having one or more cells. The second BS is configured to serve a traffic of a cell of the one or more cells of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The system is configured to generate energy consumption information of the second BS that maps different traffic conditions of the second BS to a respective energy consumption at the second BS. The system is configured to estimate, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The system is configured to estimate a decrease of an energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The system is configured to determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS. The BS is configured to perform the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and not perform the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result.

[0087] In an implementation form of the third aspect, the cell of the BS is a capacity cell, and the second BS provides one or more coverage cells.

[0088] The above description of the method according to the first aspect is correspondingly valid for the system of the third aspect. The system of the third aspect and its implementation forms and optional features achieve the same advantages as the method of the first aspect and its respective implementation forms and respective optional features.

[0089] A fourth aspect of this disclosure provides a system comprising a base station (BS) for wireless communication having one or more cells and a second BS for wireless communication having one or more cells. The second BS is configured to serve a traffic of a cell of the one or more cells of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The system is configured to, in case the cell of the BS is in a shutdown state, estimate, by using energy consumption information of the second BS, a decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by a transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after an activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption information of the second BS mapping different traffic conditions of the second BS to an respective energy consumption at the second BS. The system is configured to estimate, by using energy consumption information of the BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS, the energy consumption information of the BS mapping different traffic conditions of the BS to an respective energy consumption at the BS. The system is configured to determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS. The BS is configured to perform the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and not perform the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result.

[0090] In an implementation form of the fourth aspect, the cell of the BS is a capacity cell, and the second BS provides one or more coverage cells.

[0091] The above description of the method according to the first aspect and second aspect is correspondingly valid for the system of the fourth aspect.

[0092] The description of the system of the third aspect may be correspondingly valid for the system of the fourth aspect. The system of the fourth aspect may be the system of the third aspect.

[0093] The system of the fourth aspect and its implementation forms and optional features achieve the same advantages as the method of the first aspect and its respective implementation forms and respective optional features.

[0094] The methods of the first and second aspect and the systems of the third and fourth aspect may be used with regard to mobile base stations (BS) . The methods and systems of this disclosure may be also employed in other types of wireless communication. For example, they may be used to govern the shutdown and activation in WiFi hotspots.

[0095] The methods of the first and second aspect and the systems of the third and fourth aspect enable the estimation of energy savings achieved through shutdown at a network level. This allows ensuring that the decision to shut down results in energy savings and does not interfere with actively employed dynamic energy-saving methods. Moreover, the methods of the first and second aspect and the systems of the third and fourth aspect facilitate an enhanced coordination between base stations employing static energy-saving methods and those utilizing dynamic energy-saving strategies, thereby optimizing overall network energy efficiency.

[0096] All steps which are performed by the various entities described in the present application as well as the functionalities described to be performed by the various entities are intended to mean that the respective entity is adapted to or configured to perform the respective steps and functionalities. Even if, in the following description of specific embodiments, a specific functionality or step to be performed by external entities is not reflected in the description of a specific detailed element of that entity which performs that specific step or functionality, it should be clear for a skilled person that these methods and functionalities can be implemented in respective software or hardware elements, or any kind of combination thereof.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0117] FIG. 1 shows an example of a method according to this disclosure for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a base station (BS) for wireless communication. The method of FIG. 1 is an example of the method of the first aspect of this disclosure. The description of the method of the first aspect is correspondingly valid for the method of FIG. 1.

[0118] The method of FIG. 1 is a method for shutting down a cell of one or more cells of a BS for wireless communication. As shown in FIG. 1, the method comprises a step 100 of generating energy consumption information of a second BS for wireless communication that maps different traffic conditions of the second BS to a respective energy consumption at the second BS. The second BS is configured to serve a traffic of the cell of the BS after shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method comprises, after step 100, a step 110 of estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by the second BS serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS after the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The method comprises a step 120 of estimating a decrease of an energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. According to FIG. 1, the step 120 is performed after the step 110. This is only by way of example. The steps 110 and 120 may be performed simultaneously or the step 110 may be performed after the step 120. Optionally, the step 120 may be performed simultaneously or before the step 100 (not shown in FIG. 1) .

[0119] As shown in FIG. 1, the method comprises, after the steps 110 and 120, the step 130 of determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS. The method comprises the step 140 of performing, by the BS, the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and the step 150 of not performing the shutdown of the cell of the BS in case of a negative determination result. In other words, in case the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS (i.e. positive determination result of the determination of step 130) , the BS performs the shutdown of the cell of the BS (i.e. step 140 is performed) . In case the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the BS is not greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the second BS (i.e. negative determination result of the determination of step 130) , the shutdown of the cell of the BS is not performed (i.e. step 150 is performed) .

[0120] The steps 1110, 120 and 130 may be referred to as procedure for shutdown.

[0121] For further information on the method of FIG. 1 reference is made to the description of the method of the first aspect and the description of FIGs. 2 to 15.

[0122] In FIGs. 2, 3, 4 and 10, the BS and the second BS are labelled as “BS1” and “BS2” , respectively, and labelled with the reference signs “1” and “2” , respectively.

[0123] FIG. 2 shows an example of an implementation form of the method of FIG. 1. The description of FIG. 1 is correspondingly valid for the method of FIG. 2.

[0124] As shown in FIG. 2, the method may comprise generating, by the second BS 2, the energy consumption information of the second BS 2. That is, the second BS 2 may perform the step 100 of the method of FIG. 1. In a step 100a following the step 100, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS 1 the energy consumption information of the second BS 2 and information on a traffic of the second BS 2. In a step 110 after the step 100a, the BS 1 may estimate the increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 caused by the second BS 2 serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS 1 after the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 using the energy consumption information of the second BS 2 and the information on the traffic of the second BS 2. That is, the BS 1 may perform the step 110 of FIG. 1 using the information on the traffic of the second BS 2 (received from the second BS 2) and the energy consumption information of the second BS 2.

[0125] The BS 1 may perform the step 120 of the method of FIG. 1. That is, the BS 1 may estimate the decrease of the energy consumption PS at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS. The BS 1 may simultaneously perform the steps 110 and 120 or perform one of the steps 110 and 120 before the other. The order of performing the step 110 before the step 120 shown in FIG. 2 is only by way of example, and may be vice versa. The BS 1 may perform the step 130 of the method of FIG. 1.That is, the BS 1 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption PS at the BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS (Ps>Pl) . Optionally, in step 130, the BS 1 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption Ps at the BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS and an energy consumption offset (Ps>Pl+offset) . In case the determination result of step 130 is positive (i.e. “yes” at step 130) , the BS 1 performs the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 (i.e. step 140 is performed) . In case the determination result of step 130 is negative (i.e. “no” at step 130) , the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 is not performed (i.e. step 150 is performed) .

[0126] Optionally, in step 150 a timer is activated to a time period. After lapse of the time period, the steps 110, 120 and 130 may be repeated. The timer allows avoiding an immediate restart of the shutdown procedure, i.e. immediately performing the steps 110, 120 and 130 again.

[0127] FIG. 3 shows an example of an implementation form of the method of FIG. 1. The description of FIG. 1 is correspondingly valid for the method of FIG. 2.

[0128] As shown in FIG. 3, the method may comprise generating, by the second BS 2, the energy consumption information of the second BS 2. That is, the second BS 2 may perform the step 100 of the method of FIG. 1. In a step 100b, the BS may estimate a traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 from the BS 1 to the second BS 2. The step 100b may be performed simultaneously with the step 100. Alternatively, the step 100 may be performed before the step 100b or the step 100 may be performed after the step 100b. In a step 100c, after the step 100b, the BS 1 may transmit to the second BS 2 the estimated traffic (that was estimated in step 100b) . In a step 110 after the step 100c, the second BS 2 may estimate the increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 caused by the second BS 2 serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS 1 after the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic. That is, the second BS 2 may perform the step 110 of the method of FIG. 1 using the estimated traffic (received from the BS 1) and the energy consumption information of the second BS 2. In a step 110a following the step 110, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS 1 the estimated increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2. The BS 1 may perform the step 120 of the method of FIG. 1. That is, the BS 1 may estimate the decrease of the energy consumption PS at the BS 1 caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1. The BS 1 may perform the step 120 simultaneously with the second BS2 performing the step 110 and / or step 110a. Alternatively, the BS 1 may perform the step 120 before the second BS 2 performs the step 110 and / or step 110a.

[0129] Optionally, in step 150 a timer is activated to a time period. After lapse of the time period, the steps 110, 120 and 130 may be repeated. The timer allows avoiding an immediate restart of the shutdown procedure, i.e. immediately performing the steps 110, 120 and 130 again.

[0130] The method of FIG. 3 differs from the method of FIG. 2 in that according to FIG. 2 the step 110 of the method of FIG. 1 is performed by the BS 1, whereas according to FIG. 3 the step 110 of the method of FIG. 1 is performed by the second BS 2.

[0131] FIG. 4 shows an example of an implementation form of the method of FIG. 1. The description of FIG. 1 is correspondingly valid for the method of FIG. 4.

[0132] As shown in FIG. 4, the method may comprise generating, by the second BS 2, the energy consumption information of the second BS 2. That is, the second BS 2 may perform the step 100 of the method of FIG. 1. In a step 100b, the BS 1 may estimate a traffic being moved after shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 from the BS 1 to the second BS 2. In a step 120, the BS 1 may estimate the decrease of the energy consumption PS at the BS 1 caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1. That is the BS 1 may perform the step 120 of the method of FIG. 1. The order of performing the steps 100, 100b, 120 may be in any order. Optionally, at least two of the steps 100, 100b and 120 may be performed simultaneously. In a step 100d, the BS 1 may  transmit to the second BS 2 the estimated traffic and the estimated decrease of the energy consumption Ps at the BS 1. In a step 110 after the step 100d, the second BS 2 may estimate the increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 caused by the second BS 2 serving at least a part of the traffic of the cell of the BS 1 after the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 using the energy consumption information of the second BS and the estimated traffic. That is, the second BS 2 may perform the step 110 of the method of FIG. 1 using the estimated traffic (received from the BS 1) and the energy consumption information of the second BS 2. The second BS 2 may perform the step 130 of the method of FIG. 1. That is, the second BS 2 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption PS at the BS 1 is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 (Ps>Pl) . Optionally, in the step 130, the second BS 2 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption Ps at the BS 1 is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 and an energy consumption offset (Ps>Pl+offset) . In a step 130a following the step 130, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS a message ( “ok message” ) that indicates to perform the shutdown, in case the determination result of step 130 is positive (i.e. “yes” at step 130) . In the step 130a following the step 130, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS 1 a message ( “no message” ) that indicates to not perform the shutdown, in case the determination result of step 130 is negative (i.e. “no” at step 130) . In a step 140, the BS 1 may perform the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 in case the received message indicates to do so. In other words, in the step 130a, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS the result of the determination of step 130. Thus, in case the determination result of step 130 is positive (i.e. “yes” at step 130) , the BS 1 performs the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1. In case the determination result of step 130 is negative (i.e. “no” at step 130) , the shutdown of the cell of the BS 1 is not performed.

[0133] The method of FIG. 4 differs from the method of FIG. 3 in that according to FIG. 3 the step 130 of the method of FIG. 1 is performed by the BS 1, whereas according to FIG. 4 the step 130 of the method of FIG. 1 is performed by the second BS 2.

[0134] FIG. 5 shows an example of optional method steps of the method of FIG. 1. The description of FIG. 1 is correspondingly valid for the method of FIG. 5.

[0135] In addition to shutting down the cell of the BS 1, the method may comprise steps for activating (e.g. again) the cell from the shutdown state.

[0136] As shown in FIG. 5, the method may comprise the step 200 of generating energy consumption information of the BS that maps different traffic conditions of the BS to a respective energy consumption at the BS. The step 200 may be performed simultaneously to any one of the steps of the method of FIG. 1. Alternatively, the step 200 may be performed before or after any one of the steps of the method of FIG. 1. Assuming that the cell of the BS is in the shutdown state, the method may comprise the step 210 of activating the cell of the BS from the shutdown state. The activating 210 may comprise a step 220 of estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the second BS, a decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS caused by a transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after an activation of the cell of the BS.The activating 210 may comprise a step 230 of estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the BS, an increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS. According to FIG. 5, the step 230 is performed after the step 220. This is only by way of example. The steps 220 and 230 may be performed simultaneously or the step 220 may be performed after the step 230. Optionally, the step 220 may be performed simultaneously or before the step 200 (not shown in FIG. 5) .

[0137] The activating 210 may comprise, after the steps 220 and 230, the step 240 of determining whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS. The activating 210 may comprise the step 250 of performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a positive determination result, and the step 260 of not performing, by the BS, the activation of the cell of the BS in case of a negative  determination result. In other words, in case the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS (i.e. positive determination result of the determination of step 240) , the BS performs the activation of the cell of the BS (i.e. step 250 is performed) . In case the estimated decrease of the energy consumption at the second BS is not greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption at the BS (i.e. negative determination result of the determination of step 240) , the BS does not perform the activation of the cell of the BS (i.e. step 260 is performed) .

[0138] Optionally, the step 220 of estimating the decrease of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the shutdown of the cell of the BS comprises considering the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down.

[0139] Optionally, the method may comprise a step of determining an energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down (not shown in FIG. 5) . This step may be performed at any time before activating the cell of the BS. The step 230 of FIG. 5 may be performed using the energy consumption information of the BS and the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down. That is, optionally, the step 230 may be a step of estimating, by using the energy consumption information of the BS and the energy consumption at the BS while the cell of the BS is shut down, the increase of the energy consumption at the BS caused by the activation of the cell of the BS caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS to the BS after the activation of the cell of the BS.

[0140] For further information on the method steps of FIG. 5 reference is made to the description of the method of the first aspect and the description of FIGs. 6 b) , 7, 8, 9, 10 and 15.

[0141] FIG. 6 a) shows an example of an implementation form of a method step of the method of FIG. 1. Especially, FIG. 6 a) shows an example of the method step 130 of the method of FIG. 1.

[0151] FIG. 10 shows an example of an implementation form of the optional method steps of FIG. 5. The description of FIG. 5 is correspondingly valid for the implementation form of FIG. 10.

[0152] As shown in FIG. 10, the step 200 of FIG. 5 may be performed by the BS 1. That is, the method may comprise generating, by the BS 1, the energy consumption information of the BS 1. In the step 200, the BS 1 may transmit to the second BS 2 the energy consumption information of the BS. After the step 200, the second BS 2 may perform the steps 220, 230 and 240 of FIG. 5. That is, the second BS 2 may estimate the decrease of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS 2 caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS 2 to the BS 1 after the activation of the cell of the BS 1 using the energy consumption information of the second BS 2 (step 220) . The second BS 2 may estimate the increase of the energy consumption PS at the BS 1 caused by the transfer of at least a part of the traffic of the second BS 2 to the BS 1 after the activation of the cell of the BS 1 using the energy consumption information of the BS 1 (step 230) . The second BS 2 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS is greater than the estimated increase of the energy consumption Ps at the BS 1 (Pl>Ps) . Optionally, in the step 240, the second BS 2 may determine whether the estimated decrease of the energy consumption Pl at the second BS is greater than a sum of the estimated increase of the energy consumption Ps at the BS 1 and an energy consumption offset (Pl>Ps+offset) . In a step 240a following the step 240, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS an activation message that indicates to perform the activation, in case the  determination result of step 240 is positive (i.e. “yes” at step 240) . Optionally, in the step 240a following the step 240, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS 1 a message that indicates to not perform the shutdown (not shown in FIG. 10) , in case the determination result of step 240 is negative (i.e. “no” at step 240) .

[0153] As shown in FIG. 10, optionally in case the determination result of step 240 is negative, the step 240 may proceed to a step 240b, in which a timer is activated to a time period. After lapse of the time period, the method may continue at step 220 again, in case the step 220 is followed by the step 230. In case the step 230 is performed before the step 220 (not shown in FIG. 10) , the method may continue at step 230 after the lapse of the time period in step 240b. In a step 250, the BS 1 may perform the activation of the cell of the BS 1 in case it receives the activation message that indicates to do so. Optionally, in the step 240a, the second BS 2 may transmit to the BS the result of the determination of step 240. Thus, in case the determination result of step 240 is positive (i.e. “yes” at step 240) , the BS 1 performs the activation of the cell of the BS 1. In case the determination result of step 240 is negative (i.e. “no” at step 240) , the BS 1 does not perform the activation of the cell of the BS 1.
