Abstract

Various solutions for measurement event prediction in mobile communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may perform measurement on a first set of radio resource. The UE may obtain predicted measurement results on a second set of radio resources based on the measurement by performing a measurement prediction at one or a combination of a temporal domain, a spatial domain, and a frequency domain with an artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) based model. The UE may transmit a measurement report to a network node according to measurement results of the measurement on the first set of radio resources and / or the predicted measurement results.

Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS OF MEASUREMENT EVENT PREDICTION IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of PCT Application No. PCT / CN2024 / 084471, filed 28 March 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) based measurement event prediction with respect to user equipment and network apparatus in mobile communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] In 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) 5G new radio (NR) networks, UE mobility is an important consideration. To maintain service continuity and quality, the UE measures and reports radio resource signal environment quality. However, legacy handover (HO) designs, controlled by layer 3 (L3) procedures including radio resource management (RRM) measurement and radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration, introduce a significant amount of signaling and latency. To address this, lower-layer triggered mobility (LTM, also known as layer 1 (L1)  / layer 2 (L2) triggered mobility) is introduced to enable serving cell changes via beam management with L1 / L2 signaling, reducing latency, overhead, and interruption during UE mobility.

[0005] On the other hand, with the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) to enhance network performance, leveraging AI / ML to further improve mobility procedures, such as enabling proactive measurement reports (MR) and handovers, and / or reducing unnecessary handovers, has become an important issue.SUMMARY

Overview

[0025] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to artificial intelligence or machine learning (also referred to as “AI or ML” or “AI / ML” ) based measurement event prediction in mobile communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0026] FIG. 1 illustrates an example scenario 100 of a communication environment in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. Scenario 100 involves a user equipment (UE) 110 in wireless communication with a wireless network consisting of an access network 125 and a core network (CN) 130. The wireless network may be a 5G NR network, 5G-Advanced network, 6G network, however, the present disclosure is not limited thereto. The UE 110 may be a smart phone, a wearable device, an IoT device, and a tablet, etc. Alternatively, the UE 110 may be a notebook (NB) or personal computer (PC) inserted or installed with a data card which includes a modem and radio frequency (RF) transceiver (s) to provide the functionality of wireless communication. The CN 130 may include entities such as user plane function (UPF) , mobility management function (AMF) , session management function (SMF) and unified data management (UDM) , etc. The access network 125 may include one or more base stations (BSs) , such as the BS 120. The BS 120 may be an evolved NodeBs (eNB) , a next generation NodeB (gNB) , or a transmission and reception point (TRP) , but the present disclosure is not limited thereto. The BS 120 may provide communication coverage for a geographic coverage area where communications with the UE 110 is supported.

[0027] In scenario 100, the UE 110 establish a connection (e.g., a radio resource control (RRC) connection) with the BS 120. The BS 120 may provide a measurement configuration (e.g., time to trigger (TTT) and offset) to the UE 110 by RRC signaling. The BS 120 may request the UE 110 to measure intra-frequency and / or inter-frequency measurements. The UE 110 may perform the measurements (e.g., the radio resource management (RRM) measurements) according to the measurement configuration and evaluate the reporting criteria (also referred to as the reporting condition) for triggering the measurement report based on the measurement results. In this embodiment, the UE 110 utilizes an AI / ML based prediction module 115 including one or more AI / ML based models to predict the measurements results. For example, the UE 110 may utilize the AI / ML based prediction module 115 to predict whether a specific measurement event is likely to happen. The output of the AI / ML based prediction module 115 includes event prediction information indicating the prediction result. The AI / ML based prediction module 115 may include component (s) implemented in hardware and / or software. The AI / ML based model in the AI / ML based prediction module 115 may be cell specific. That is, one AI / ML based model corresponds to one cell. Alternatively, the AI / ML based model may be cluster specific (i.e., one AI / ML based model corresponds to a cluster of cells) .

[0028] By utilizing the AI / ML based prediction module 115, the UE 110 performs measurement event prediction and decides when to report the model output (e.g., the event prediction information) to the BS 120. Then, the BS 120 may determine how to perform a mobility related process (e.g., a handover (HO) ) based on the event prediction information reported by the UE 110. For example, the BS 120 may make a handover (HO) decision and sends an HO command to the UE 110.

[0029] Specifically, the UE 110 may use measurement results associated with a first set of radio resources to predict measurement results associated with a second set of radio resources. The first set of radio resources may correspond to a first set of reference signals for a first set of cells and the second set of radio resources may correspond to a second set of reference signals for a second set of cells. The reference signal quality may include a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) , a reference signal received power (RSRP) , or a received signal strength (RSS) . The radio resource of reference signals may be defined by temporal domain, or by temporal domain with any combinations of the spatial and frequency domains. In one embodiment, the UE 110 performs the measurement on the first set of reference signals for a first set of cells (e.g., the serving cells and the neighboring cells of intra-frequency or inter-frequency) , and predicts the measurement results on the second set of reference signals for a second set of cells with the AI / ML based prediction module 115. The second set of cells may be the serving cells and the neighboring cells of intra-frequency or inter-frequency, which may be same or different from the first set of cells. The UE 110 may derive the cell quality of the first and / or second set of cells. Further, the UE 110 may evaluate the reporting criteria and trigger condition, and decide to send the measurement report to the BS 120. In another embodiment, the UE 110 may collect the measurement results of the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells and the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells, and train one or more AI / ML based models based on the collected measurement results with or without other assistance information. More specifically, the UE 110 measures the first set of reference signals for a first set of cells and the second set of reference signals for a second set of cells at a training stage of the AI / ML based mode. The UE 110 may perform model training by using the measurement results of the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells as model input and using the measurement results of the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells as label.

[0030] FIG. 2 is a diagram depicting example scenarios of prediction with one or more AI / ML based models in accordance with implementations of the present disclosure. Referring to scenario 210, the UE 110 may perform the measurement prediction at temporal domain with one or multiple AI / ML based models. That is, the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells (i.e., the model input) and the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells (i.e., model label) are the same in frequency and spatial domains. That is, the radio resource of the first and second sets of reference signals is defined by an identical frequency domain and an identical spatial domain. During the training stage, an AI / ML based model is trained using historical measurement results measured in the time period [T-N, T] as model input and future measurement results in the time period [T+1, T+M] as label. By utilizing one or more trained AI / ML based models, the UE 110 measures the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells in the time period [T-N, T] to predict the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells in the time period [T, T+M] .

[0031] Referring to scenario 220, the UE 110 may perform the measurement prediction at temporal and spatial domains with one or multiple AI / ML based models. In other words, the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells and the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells are same in frequency domain. That is, the radio resource of the first and second sets of reference signals is defined by an identical frequency domain. As shown in scenario 220, the solid lines indicate the measured set of beams and the dotted line indicated the predicted set of beams. During the training stage, an AI / ML based model is trained using measurement results of partial beams as model input and the entire beam results or the other part of beam results as label. By utilizing one or more trained AI / ML based models, the UE 110 measures the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells at partial beams set in the time period [T-N, T] with dotted line to predict the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells of the entire / other part of beam set in the time period [T, T+M] with solid line.

[0032] Referring to scenario 230, the UE 110 may perform the measurement prediction at temporal and frequency domains with one or multiple AI / ML based models, which means that the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells and the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells are same in spatial domain. That is, the radio resource of the first and second sets of reference signals is defined by an identical spatial domain. The first set of reference signals and the second set of reference signals may be inter-frequency or intra-frequency. As shown in scenario 230, the solid line indicates the measured bandwidth parts (BWPs)  / frequencies, and the dotted line indicated the predicted full or other BWPs / frequencies. During the training stage, an AI / ML based model is trained using measurement results of some BWPs / frequencies in the time period [T-N, T] as model input and full or other BWPs / frequencies results in the time period [T, T+M] as label. By utilizing one or more trained AI / ML based models, the UE 110 measures the first set of reference signals of some BWPs / frequencies in the time period [T-N, T] with dotted line to predict the second set of reference signals of the full or other BWPs / frequencies in the time period [T, T+M] with solid line.

[0033] In yet another embodiment, the UE 110 may perform the measurement prediction at temporal, spatial, and frequency domains with one or multiple AI / ML based models. For example, during the training stage, using historical measurement results measured in the time period [T-N, T] of partial beams for some BWPs / frequencies as model input and future measurement results in the time period [T+1, T+M] of the full / other part beam for full / other BWPs / frequencies as label. By utilizing one or more trained AI / ML based models, the UE 110 measures the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells associated with partial beams set and a set of BWPs / frequencies in the time period [T-N, T] to predict the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells associated with the entire / other part of beam set and the full or other BWPs / frequencies in the time period [T, T+M] .

[0034] FIG. 3 is a diagram depicting a flow of current measurement procedure including beam-level and cell-level filtering. In a connected state (e.g., RRC CONNECTED state) , a UE measures multiple beams (at least one) of a cell and the measurements results (power values) are averaged to derive the cell quality. In doing so, the UE is configured to consider a subset of the detected beams. Filtering takes place at two different levels: at the physical layer to derive beam quality and then at RRC level to derive cell quality from multiple beams. Cell quality from beam measurements is derived in the same way for the serving cell (s) and for the non-serving cell (s) . Measurement reports may contain the measurement results of the X best beams if the UE is configured to do so by the gNB. Scenario 300 includes an L1 filtering stage, a beam consolidation / selection stage, an L3 filtering for cell quality stage, an evaluation of reporting criteria stage, an L3 beam filtering stage, and a beam selection for reporting stage. In scenario 300, K beams correspond to the measurements on synchronization signal block (SSB) or channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) resources configured for layer 3 (L3) mobility by gNB and detected by a UE at layer 1 (L1) . Point A is the measurements (beam specific samples) internal to the physical layer. The L1 filtering stage includes an internal L1 filtering of the inputs measured at point A and the implementation is up to UE. Point A1 represents the measurements reported by L1 to L3 after L1 filtering. The beam consolidation / selection stage performs consolidation of beam specific measurements to derive cell quality. The L3 filtering for cell quality stage performs filtering on the measurements provided at point B. Point C is the measurement after processing of L3 filtering for cell quality. The evaluation of reporting criteria stage checks whether actual measurement reporting is necessary at point D. That is, the measurement report information (message) may be sent at point D. The L3 beam filtering stage filters the measurement provided at point A1. The beam selection for beam reporting stage selects X measurements from the measurements provided at point E. The behavior of the beam consolidation / selection stage, L3 filtering for cell quality stage, evaluation of reporting criteria stage, L3 beam filtering stage, and beam selection for beam reporting stage is standardized. The configuration of these stages is provided by RRC signaling.

[0035] In the present disclosure, one or more AI / ML based models may be incorporated into the flow of measurement procedure for performing the measurement event prediction, and the prediction may be a cell-level radio RRM measurement prediction or a beam-level RRM measurement prediction. FIGs. 4A to 4E are diagrams depicting example flows of measurement procedure incorporating an AI / ML based prediction model in accordance with implementations of the present disclosure. However, the present disclosure is not limited to FIGs. 4A to 4E. That is, the output of an AI / ML based model may be an input of one or a combination of the L1 filtering stage, the beam consolidation / selection stage, the L3 filtering for cell quality stage, the evaluation of reporting criteria stage, the L3 beam filtering stage, and the beam selection for reporting stage. In one example, by utilizing one or more AI / ML based models, L1 beam-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L1 beam-level measurement result (s) and then L3 cell-level measurement result is generated. In one example, L3 Cell-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L3 cell-level measurement result (s) . In one example, L3 Cell-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L1 beam-level measurement result (s) . In one example, L1 filtered beam-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L1 beam-level measurement result (s) and then L3 beam-level measurement result is generated. In one example, L3 beam-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L3 beam-level measurement result (s) . In one example, L3 beam-level measurement result (s) may be predicted based on actual L1 beam-level measurement result (s) .

[0036] Referring to flow 400a shown in FIG. 4A, the measurement results at point A without L1 filtering are used for AI / ML based RRM prediction (i.e., as the input of one or more AI / ML based models) . To be specific, using measurements results of the first set of reference signals without L1 filtering as model input, the UE 110 may predict the measurement results on the second set of reference signals at point A’, and then performs L1 and L3 filtering on the measurement results of both the first set and the second set of reference signals. After that the UE 110 performs beam consolidation / selection and finally derives the cell quality. In one embodiment, the first set of reference signals and the second set of reference signals are defined by one or a combination of spatial, temporal, and frequency domains.

[0037] Referring to flow 400b shown in FIG. 4B, the L1 measurement results at point A1 (after L1 filtering) are used for AI / ML based RRM prediction (i.e., as the input of one or more AI / ML based models) . Specifically, using measurements results of the first set of reference signals after L1 filtering as model input, the UE 110 may predict the measurement results on the second set of reference signals first at point A1’, and then performs L3 filtering on the measurement results of both the first set and the second set of reference signals. The UE 110 may then perform beam consolidation / selection and finally derive the cell quality. The first set of reference signals and the second set of reference signals may be defined by one or a combination of spatial, temporal, and frequency domains.

[0038] Referring to flow 400c shown in FIG. 4C, the L3 measurement results at point E are used for AI / ML based RRM prediction (i.e., as the input of one or more AI / ML based models) . For example, by using measurements results of the first set of reference signals after L3 beam filtering as model input, the UE 110 may predict the measurement results on the second set of reference signals at point E’. In one embodiment, the UE 110 may perform L3 filter on the measurement results of the first set of reference signals first, performs measurement prediction on the second set of reference signals, then performs beam consolidation / selection and finally derives the cell quality. The first set of reference signals and the second set of reference signals may be defined by one or a combination of spatial, temporal, and frequency domains.

[0039] The RRM measurements cell-quality prediction may be realized by flow 400d shown in FIG. 4D or flow 400e shown in FIG. 4E. In flow 400d, the measurement results at point B are used for AI / ML based RRM prediction, which are L1 measurement results after L1 filtering and beam consolidation / selection. In flow 400e shown in FIG. 4E, the measurement results at point C are used for AI / ML based RRM prediction, which are L3 measurement results after L3 cell filtering. The UE 110 may measure the first set of cells and predict the measurement results of the second set of cells. For example, the measured first set of cells may be the same as the predicted second set of cells. Alternatively, the measured first set of cells may be different from the predicted second set of cells. The first set of reference signals and the second set of reference signals may be defined by one or a combination of spatial, temporal, and frequency domains.

[0040] FIG. 5 is a diagram depicting an example procedure of early measurement report in accordance with implementations of the present disclosure. In procedure 500, the UE 110 may evaluate the configured reporting criteria with the predicted RRM results and report the predicted measurement event at the measurement period. In one example, for the temporal domain beam-quality prediction, the UE 110 may perform full beam sweeping at observation time window and stop beam sweeping at prediction time window. In another example, for the temporal-spatial domain beam-quality prediction, the UE 110 may perform partial beam sweeping at observation time window. The evaluation of the reporting criteria considers measured results, predicted results, or a combination thereof, as configured by the BS 120. Further, during the measurement period, the UE 110 may report the measurement event based on predicted results, measured results, or a combination thereof, as configured by the BS 120. With early reported measurement event, the BS 120 may make an early HO decision and send an HO command to the UE 110. Accordingly, the UE 110 may perform an HO execution according to the HO command. For example, the UE 110 starts an HO preparation when an event (A3 event) is predicted to happen, and HO command is sent when A3 entering conditions are met based on actual / real measurement and an event is predicted to be met for the duration of TTT.

[0041] FIG. 6 is a diagram depicting an example procedure of measurement event prediction within TTT and prediction period in accordance with implementations of the present disclosure. In procedure 600, the UE 110 may evaluate the reporting criteria with longer period including TTT and prediction period, and report the measurement event at the predicted moment when the reporting criteria with longer TTT is satisfied. The UE 110 may evaluate the reporting criteria within TTT which approach to use is configured by the BS 120 and prediction period with the measurement results which are predicted, or both of actual and predicted measurement are used. Further, the UE 110 may report the measurement event which satisfied the reporting criteria with TTT and prediction period at certain prediction moment. That is, the UE 110 evaluates reporting criteria based on measurements from both the TTT period and the prediction period. If the criteria are met, the UE 110 reports the measurement event at a specific prediction moment, rather than waiting for the TTT period to conclude. In other words, the UE 110 does not only report at the end of the TTT, it may report earlier at a certain prediction time during the TTT, based on the evaluation of the combined TTT and prediction period measurement results. To predict longer than TTT may avoid unnecessary measurement report and HO. [0082] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.

[0083] Further, with respect to the use of substantially any plural and / or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and / or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and / or application. The various singular / plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for sake of clarity.

[0084] Moreover, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims, e.g., bodies of the appended claims, are generally intended as “open” terms, e.g., the term “including” should be interpreted as “including but not limited to, ” the term “having” should be interpreted as “having at least, ” the term “includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to, ” etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to implementations containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an, " e.g., “a” and / or “an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one” or “one or more; ” the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should be interpreted to mean at least the recited number, e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations, " without other modifiers, means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”

[0085] From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that various implementations of the present disclosure have been described herein for purposes of illustration, and that various modifications may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the various implementations disclosed herein are not intended to be limiting, with the true scope and spirit being indicated by the following claims.
