[0003] The present disclosure relates to a urine measuring device. A urine measuring device may also be referred to as a diuresis device or (hourly) urine meter.
[0004] An example of a urine measuring device is disclosed in US4,265, 118, which is incorporated in the present disclosure by reference.
[0005] A urine measuring device is typically used for intensive care and other critical patients for measuring the amount of urine produced by an intensive care patient. The volume of urine being a vital sign in the monitoring of the patient in the intensive care unit and similar critical and surgical situations.
[0006] The urine measuring device may be used for monitoring the patient for a medium to a long duration of time such as up to five days or longer.
[0007] The urine measuring device comprises a solid / rigid measuring container with a scale for measuring the production / volume of urine. It may comprise a urine bag for emptying the urine from the measuring container into the urine bag.
[0008] Within time intervals such as every hour a nurse reads the volume and then empties the urine measuring device by opening a valve between the measuring container and the urine bag such that the urine may flow from the measuring container into the urine bag.

[0012] The filter may outlet displaced air from the measuring chamber when urine drips from the drip chamber and into the measuring container, e.g. the drops of urine displace air, and without the filter there would be an overpressure / excess pressure in the rigid measuring container.
[0013] When the measuring container is emptied the filter equalizes negative pressure that arises due to the emptying, e.g. the filter allows for air to enter the measuring chamber.
[0014] If the pressure equalization is not possible the emptying of the measuring container may last longer time.
[0015] The filter (the pores) may be blocked or become dirty for various reasons - for example if urine comes into contact with the filter (in case the measuring container falls over or is laying down on purpose).
[0016] The more the filter is blocked the less pressure equalizing can be achieved. This may result in the emptying of the measuring container to be very slow, e.g. when the emptying takes place (4 to 48 times per day), the urine is meant to drain by passive (gravity) drainage to the lower hanging urine bag (2 to 4 L size). The volume being emptied may vary from 50 mL to 500 mL. This emptying should last from 5 - 10 sec to 30 - 40 sec, subject to volume being emptied. When a vacuum / under pressure develops in the chamber, often with correlation to the volume of fluid being emptied, due to the drainage process where not enough air is replacing the volume of fluid leaving the measuring chamber; the worst-case situation will almost entirely stop the emptying process, to great irritation of nurses, and cost of nursing and in milder cases of vacuum the urine flow down into the lower bag will be reduced significantly. It is, based on anecdotal evidence believed that volumes > 200 mL (out of 400 mL or 500 mL capacity of the chamber) can cause vacuum related problems for the nurses during such emptying procedures. It can in worst case cause nurses to either having to disconnect the urine-bag, and seek unauthorized pressure neutralization by means of uncontrolled dismantling of the device, or in some cases even compromising the filter by means of puncturing it with a sharp object e.g. hypodermic needle. It may also result in an overpressure being build up in the measuring container not only due to the urine entering the measuring container, but also due to gasses created by microorganisms in the urine for example in cases where the measuring container and the urine inside is exposed to sunlight or heat.
[0017] An overpressure inside the measuring container may also cause the inlet valve in the inlet to the measuring container to become stuck, e.g. the drops of urine pressing down on the valve from the drip chamber cannot overcome the overpressure that has been build up inside the measuring container. This may cause hazard to the patient due to the lack of drainage.
[0018] In any case (whether there is a negative / under pressure or an overpressure) the urine measuring device no longer works as intended.
[0019] It is contemplated that the size of the filter or the number of filters may be increased. However, this will not prevent the underlying problem and only postpone the time until the urine measuring device becomes defect.

Claims
Claims1. A urine measuring device for receiving urine from a catheterized patient, said urine measuring device comprising:- a measuring container,- a drip chamber arranged between said catheter and said measuring container,- an inlet to said measuring container, and- an outlet for emptying contents of said measuring container into a urine bag,- a filter for equalizing a pressure difference between the inside of said measuring container and the outside of said measuring container,- an opening with a movable closure, said opening arranged closer to the top of said measuring container than the bottom of said measuring container.
2. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said measuring container comprising a passage, and said opening arranged in said passage.
3. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said passage comprising an anti-microbial material.
4. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said opening arranged in the upper 25 % of said measuring container.
5. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said movable closure being removable from said measuring container.
6. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said measuring container including a female luer connector, and said opening arranged in female luer connector.
7. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said measuring container comprising a non return valve at said inlet.
8. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said measuring container being rigid.
9. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said measuring container comprising a lid, said lid preferably comprising an anti- microbial material.
10. The urine measuring device according to any of the preceding items, said drip chamber comprising an anti-microbial material.
