Abstract

The present invention relates to preparation of Povidone Iodine Ointment in combination with biopolymer Chitosan for synergistically enhancing the anti- septic / antibacterial activity of Povidone Iodine and espousing the wound healing effect of the biopolymer Disclosed herein is composition comprising of Povidone Iodine and a biopolymer in an ointment base, wherein the ointment base may comprise of a waxy material, a solvent, thickening agent, solubilizer, an acid, a buffering agent, and water as co-solvent. In certain aspects, the biopolymer is chitosan which is an unbranched binary polysaccharide consisting of two units N- acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucosamine. A method of making the ointment is also disclosed in the application. The key aspects of the invention are that the Povidone Iodine is added in an amount between 5 % (w / w) and 10% (w / w), and the chitosan has a molecular weight in the range of 50 kDa to 5000 kDa and added in an amount of 0.1% (w / w).
