Description

[0001] Filter paper insert and method for manufacturing a filter paper insert

[0002] The present invention relates to a filter paper insert for the production of brewed beverages, comprising two layers of filter paper which are connected to each other at a base and at two opposite sides to form a fillable interior, wherein the layers of filter paper are movable from a superimposed position to a spaced-apart filling position at an opening side opposite the base, and a plurality of slots are provided in the two layers of filter paper.

[0003] German patent DE 195 16 800 A1 discloses a filter paper insert for producing aroma extracts from coffee or tea, in which a multitude of slits are incorporated into a filter surface of the filter paper insert. The slits are formed by incisions and are intended to open to a greater or lesser extent depending on the hydrostatic pressure within the filter vessel. However, blockages of the slits frequently occur because the cut edges lie directly against each other and can become entangled.

[0004] In a further development, EP 2 793 662 B1 discloses a filter paper insert in which numerous slits are incorporated into the layers of filter paper to increase permeability. Each slit is located on a base section of an essentially pot-shaped embossing, and the slits are S-shaped. The embossing in the filter paper leads to a certain stiffening of the filter material, and here too, the slits can remain closed or become clogged during the brewing process. This reduces the permeability to coffee oils.

[0005] A method for manufacturing a filter bag from water-permeable filter material is known from DE 34 46 403 A1.

[0006] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a filter paper insert and a method for manufacturing a filter paper insert which, through optimized permeability, enable an improved brewing result and also ensure efficient manufacturing. This object is achieved with a filter paper insert having the features of claim 1 and a method for manufacturing a filter paper insert having the features of claim 8.

[0007] The filter paper insert according to the invention for the production of brewed beverages, in particular coffee, comprises two layers of filter paper which are joined together at a base and on two opposite sides to form a fillable interior. The two layers of filter paper are movable at an opening opposite the base from a superimposed position to a spaced-apart filling position, in which the filter paper insert is essentially funnel-shaped or frustoconical. A plurality of slits are also provided in the two layers of filter paper. The smallest opening width of the slits, perpendicular to their longitudinal direction, differs between the two layers of filter paper. The slits with different opening widths create areas in the filter paper that are more permeable during extraction, especially for coffee oil, which improves the brewing result in terms of the coffee oil content in the brewed beverage.

[0008] The smallest opening width of the slots is determined by the distance between the two cut edges perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the slots. The smallest opening width is the smallest distance along the slot where the opening width can vary across the thickness of the filter paper. The smallest opening width is then used when the slot's opening width varies over its height. Alternatively, an averaged smallest opening width can be used if the cut edge is not flat.

[0009] Preferably, the smallest opening in a first layer of filter paper is at least 10% wider than the smallest opening in a second layer of filter paper. This ensures that the openings in the two layers of filter paper differ sufficiently to have an effect during the brewing process.

[0010] In a further embodiment, the slots are wedge-shaped in cross-section in both layers, perpendicular to their longitudinal direction. Thus, along the height of the slots, there is one side with a larger opening width and an opposite side with a smaller opening width, resulting in a wedge shape. This wedge shape can extend continuously through both layers, so that the slots in the two layers are essentially identical, differing only in their opening width. The slots preferably have the same length; for example, the length of the slots can be between 1 mm and 5 mm, and particularly between 2 mm and 4 mm.The slits can be produced in both layers using the same cutting tool, for example with a wedge-shaped cutting edge which, when driven into the filter paper, penetrates both layers and, due to its wedge shape, creates slits with different opening widths.

[0011] Preferably, the slots are straight in the longitudinal direction. Optionally, the slots can also be V-shaped or arc-shaped, whereby even with these geometries, the cutting edge is preferably wedge-shaped in cross-section.

[0012] The wedge-shaped opening of the slots, aligned with the coffee flow direction, allows for optimized flow from the filter paper insert during brewing. In at least one layer, the wedge-shaped opening is designed to spread outwards in the flow direction, making clogging unlikely. At least some of the wedge-shaped slots in at least one layer are designed to spread outwards in the flow direction. Optionally, all slots in one layer can be designed to spread outwards in a wedge shape in the flow direction. Furthermore, slots that spread outwards in the flow direction can optionally be provided in both layers.

[0013] In the inventive method for manufacturing a filter paper insert, a web of filter paper is first provided and then folded so that two web-like layers of filter paper are arranged one on top of the other. Slits are then cut into these two web-like layers, and a filter paper insert is embossed and cut out from the stacked layers of filter paper. The sequence of the individual process steps is arbitrary; the embossing, cutting, and slitting can be carried out sequentially or simultaneously. Cutting the slits into the stacked layers makes the manufacturing process particularly efficient because two cutting operations are not necessary if the slits are made while the paper is still unfolded. The slots are cut through two layers of filter paper, which also reduces wear on the cutting tools and produces slots with different opening widths. Preferably, a fold line created during folding of the filter paper web serves as a fold line on one side of the filter paper insert after assembly.

[0014] Slitting and cutting out the filter paper insert are preferably performed simultaneously, using a cutting roller with multiple cutting edges for both the slitting and cutting processes. This enables efficient production, as both the cutting edges on one outer side of the filter paper insert and the filter paper insert for creating the slits are processed simultaneously by a single cutting roller. This also avoids errors caused by potential misalignment that could occur when using two cutting tools positioned one behind the other. A cutting edge for cutting the slits is preferably wedge-shaped in cross-section, allowing for simple creation of wedge-shaped slits in the filter paper, thus producing different slit widths in both layers.

[0015] The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to an exemplary embodiment and the accompanying drawings. These show:

[0016] Figures 1A and 1B show two views of a filter paper insert according to the invention, and

[0017] Figure 2 shows a schematic view of a method for manufacturing a filter paper insert.

[0018] A filter paper insert 1 comprises two layers 2a and 2b of filter paper, arranged congruently on top of each other. The two layers 2a and 2b are joined to each other at a base 3 and two sides 4 and 5, optionally by a folded edge or a seam, in particular an embossed seam. In Figure 1a, side 4 is formed by a folded edge at which the two layers 2a and 2b are joined to each other. The base 3 is formed by an embossed seam 7, which is connected via an arc to an embossed seam 8 on side 5. The filter paper is cut out adjacent to the embossed seams 7 and 8.

[0019] On an opening side 6 opposite the base 3, the two layers 2a and 2b can be moved from a position in contact with each other to a spaced-apart filling position. In the filling position, the filter paper insert has a substantially frustoconical shape. The geometry of the two filter paper layers 2a and 2b can also be designed differently, and the connection at the base 3 and the sides 5 via embossed seams 7 and 8 can also be modified; for example, parallel embossed seams can be used as a double seam to connect layers 2a and 2b. In a double seam, two embossed seams are aligned parallel to each other and usually have a narrow unembossed area between them.

[0020] The two layers 2a and 2b of filter paper contain a multitude of linear slits 9a and 9b, with a length L between 1 mm and 5 mm, particularly between 2 mm and 4 mm. The orientation of the slits 9a, 9b is from the base 3 towards the opening side 6, but can also be parallel to one of the two sides 4 or 5, or configured differently, for example perpendicular to the arc-shaped course at the opening side 6.

[0021] As can be seen in Figure 1b, the slits 9a, 9b extend through both layers 2a and 2b of filter paper, so that a first slit 9a is formed in the first layer 2a and a second slit 9b in the second layer 2b. The slits 9a and 9b have the same length L, but different opening widths. The opening width B of the first slit 9a is larger than the opening width b of a slit 9b in the second layer 2b. The opening width corresponds to the width of the respective slit 9a or 9b perpendicular to the longitudinal direction at its smallest point. One cut edge of the slots 9a and 9b is not oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers 2a and 2b, but is slightly wedge-shaped, so that the slots 9a in the first layer 2a have a slightly larger opening width, preferably at least 10% larger opening width than the slots 9b in the second layer 2b.

[0022] A method for manufacturing a filter paper insert 1 is explained with reference to Figure 2. First, a web 10 of filter paper is fed in and folded at a folding station, with a fold edge 11 extending parallel to the longitudinal direction of the web 10, so that two layers 10a and 10b of the web-shaped filter paper are arranged one on top of the other. These two layers 10a and 10b are then fed to a cutting and embossing station. At a cutting station, the outer contour of a filter paper insert 1 is cut out, producing a blank 12. Furthermore, at an embossing station, a bond is formed between the overlapping layers 10a and 10b, so that a blank 13 already has two bonded layers.

[0023] A further process step relates to a cutting station for cutting the slots 9a and 9b to produce a finished blank 14. The cutting station can comprise a cutting roller having a plurality of cutting edges, each producing individual slots 9a and 9b, with each cutting edge penetrating both layers 10a and 10b of filter paper. The cutting edges on the cutting roller are preferably wedge-shaped in cross-section, so that slots 9a and 9b with different opening widths are produced during the cutting process.

[0024] In the last step, the material is separated so that a filter paper insert 1 is provided, as shown in Figures 1 a and 1 b.

[0025] The sequence of the process steps after folding the two layers 10a and 10b of the web-shaped filter paper together can be arbitrary. For example, embossing can be performed first, followed simultaneously by cutting the slits 9a and 9b and cutting the outer contour of the filter paper insert 1. This can optionally be done with a single cutting tool, such as a cutting roller with appropriate cutting edges.
