Abstract

Systems and methods for applicable functionality reporting during handover and link recovery are disclosed. A user equipment (UE) receives, from a source cell, a measurement configuration message indicating an associated identifier (ID) corresponding to a network-side additional condition at a neighbor cell; identifies that there is a applicable functionality at the UE for the associated ID by determining that the UE comprises a artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) model for the associated ID; sends, to the source cell, an applicable functionality message indicating the associated ID; receives, from the source cell, a handover command instructing the UE to perform a handover to the neighbor cell; receives, after performing the handover to the neighbor cell, from the neighbor cell, an inference configuration message identifying the associated ID; and uses, in response to the inference configuration message, the AI / ML model for the associated ID with signaling of the neighbor cell.

Description

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR APPLICABLE FUNCTIONALITY REPORTING DURING HANDOVER AND LINK RECOVERYTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including wireless communications systems using artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) models.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems'standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0007] Frequency bands for 5G NR may be separated into two or more different frequency ranges. For example, Frequency Range 1 (FR1) may include frequency bands operating in sub-6 gigahertz (GHz) frequencies, some of which are bands that may be used by previous standards, and may potentially be extended to cover new spectrum offerings from 410 megahertz (MHz) to 7125 MHz. Frequency Range 2 (FR2) may include frequency bands from 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz. Note that in some systems, FR2 may also include frequency bands from 52.6 GHz to 71 GHz (or beyond) . Bands in the millimeter wave (mmWave) range of FR2 may have smaller coverage but potentially higher available bandwidth than bands in FR1. Skilled persons will recognize these frequency ranges, which are provided by way of example, may change from time to time or from region to region.

[0021] FIG. 12 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0022] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0023] An applicable functionality may be understood to include a functionality that is available at a UE through the use, at the UE, of an AI / ML model that is for / that underpins that functionality.

[0024] Embodiments with respect to applicable functionality reporting are now discussed. Examples of applicable functionality reporting may relate to AI / ML model-enabled functionalities for, for example, UE positioning and / or beam management.

[0025] In some embodiments, a wireless communication system may support the use of proactive reporting of UE-sided applicable functionality (s) . For example, for such cases, it may be that the UE reports any of its applicable AI / ML functionality (s) to a network via an uplink assistance information (UAI) message and / or an LTE positioning protocol (LPP) message.

[0026] In some embodiments, a wireless communication system may support the use of reactive reporting of UE-sided applicable functionality (s) . For example, for such cases, it may be that the network configures AI / ML functionality (s) to the UE via a radio resource control (RRC) and / or an LPP message.

[0027] It may be useful to standardize which AI / ML-enabled features, feature groups (FGs) , and / or functionalities are supported within a wireless communication system. In some cases, the nature of such support may include the notion that that the UE is capable of using the functionality (but does not necessary require that the UE presently have the model available for use at the UE) . Within such contexts, there may be cases where it is beneficial to include supported AI / ML-enabled features, FGs, and / or functionalities in UE capability signaling.

[0028] Embodiments herein discuss the use of network-side additional conditions. A network-side additional condition may be a condition that relates to the nature of signaling provided by the network (e.g., directionality, power, timing, frequency, antenna port configuration, etc. ) . An AI / ML model at a UE may correspondingly b trained for purposes of generating usable inferencing using the signaling according to such a network-side additional condition.

[0029] FIG. 1 illustrates a diagram 100 illustrating a use of model switching 102 at a UE 104. As illustrated, a first cell 106 uses a first beam pattern 108 and a second cell 110 using a second beam pattern 112. The first beam pattern 108 used by the first cell 106 may be understood to be according to a first network-side additional condition represented. The second cell 110 used by the first beam pattern 108 may be understood to be according to a second network-side additional condition.

[0030] As illustrated, when the UE 104 is served by the first cell 106 using the first beam pattern 108, the UE 104 may use a first AI / ML model 114 that is trained according to the first network-side additional condition (the first beam pattern 108) . Further, when the UE 104 is served by the second cell 110 using the second beam pattern 112, the UE 104 may instead use a second AI / ML model 116 that is trained according to the second network-side additional condition (the second beam pattern 112) . A corresponding model switching 102 may occur as the UE 104 hands over as between the first cell 106 and the second cell 110.

[0031] Ensuring the consistency of applicable / active network-side additional condition (s) when engaging in AI / ML model use as discussed herein may be useful. For  example, it may be useful to ensure a consistency of applicable network-side additional condition (s) across training and inference stages for a UE-sided AI / ML model for cases of beam management (BM) (e.g., for BM-Case 1 (spatial and frequency prediction) and / or BM Case 2 (temporal prediction) ) . In such cases, assumptions that same network-side additional condition (s) apply during both during the training stage for an AI / ML model and the inferencing stage using the AI / ML model may underpin corresponding UE assumptions about the relationship between beams of a set A of beams measured for the purpose of generating AI / ML model based predictions during the inferencing stage and a set B of beams which used for a (e.g., prior in time) training stage for the AI / ML model.

[0032] Within this consistent context, it may be that some wireless communication systems make use of an associated identifier (ID) . An associated ID may act as a consistent (or at least determinable) identifier of applicable network-side additional condition (s) that may be relied upon across the multiple lifecycle stages of an AI / ML model (e.g., an additional ID may be an identifier that remains consistent / determinable across both training and inference stages corresponding to the development and use of an AI / ML model) .

[0033] In some wireless communication systems, an associated ID is cell-specific (represents the same additional condition whenever used within that cell) . Further, in some such wireless communication system, an associated ID may further be multiple-cell-specific (may represent the same additional condition whenever used within any of the multiple cells) . For example, in some cases, an associated ID may be public land mobile network (PLMN) -specific, meaning that the associated ID represents the same additional condition whenever it is used within any cell of the PLMN.

[0034] Accordingly, it may be that a UE assumes that an associated ID of a network-side additional condition is consistent on at least a cell-wise basis. In some embodiments, this UE assumption of associated ID consistency of a network-side additional condition may extend to multiple cells (e.g., all cells of a PLMN, as discussed above) .

[0035] However, it is noted that cases where different cells associate different meanings (different network-side additional conditions) to a same associated ID are also contemplated. This may occur in some cases because, for example, different cells may use different radio configurations (e.g. beam patterns) depending on deployment / operation plan.

[0036] With respect to associated ID use, for UE-sided AI / ML model (s) developed (e.g., trained, updated) at the UE side, the following procedure is noted as one possible example. First, for data collection, the network signals the data collection related configuration (s) and any associated ID (s) to the UE (s) . Associated IDs for each sub-use case relate to applicable network-side additional conditions.

[0037] Then, the UE (s) collects the data corresponding to the associated ID (s) .

[0038] AI / ML model (s) are developed (e.g., trained, updated) at the UE based on the collected data corresponding to the associated ID (s) .

[0039] Finally, the UE (s) report information of these AI / ML model (s) corresponding to associated IDs to the network.

[0040] In some such cases, a model ID is determined / assigned for each such AI / ML model. A relationship between the model ID and an associated ID may exist. In some cases, the network assigns the model ID to the AI / ML model at a UE. In some cases, the UE assigns the model ID to the AI / ML model and reports this model ID to the network. In some cases, the applicable associated ID may be assumed as the model ID for the AI / ML model. In some cases, the model ID of the AI / ML model is determined based on pre-defined rule (s) given in a definition or specification for the wireless communication system. Note that the provision of a model ID may allow for the use AI / ML model inferencing on a model ID basis in some circumstances.

[0041] Note that in some cases, a model ID is not assigned to the AI / ML model. Rather, interaction / communication of associated ID (s) between a UE and then network is instead used in order to resolve the consistency of use of an AI / ML model without the use of a model ID.

[0042] Embodiments herein illustrate various mechanisms for the use of associated IDs. For example, embodiments herein relate to procedures, signaling, and applicable functionality reporting corresponding to the use of network-indicated associated IDs. Further, embodiments herein relate to operational modes for applicable functionality reporting during the handover of a UE from a source cell to a neighbor cell and / or for link recovery (e.g., RRC re-establishment) .

[0043] Corresponding to such contexts, it is noted that since AI / ML model training takes a non-negligible amount of time, it will be inefficient if, responsive to any handover and / or link recovery to a new serving cell a UE simply discards all previously trained AI / ML models and restarts by training new AI / ML models, considering that there  may be at least some instances where one or more of the AI / ML models may still be used / is still compatible with an applicable additional condition at the new serving cell. However, since applicable functionality is determined by the UE, it may not be possible to rely on coordination between the source cell and the destination cell to identify such AI / ML models that remain usable.

[0044] Accordingly embodiments herein relate procedures and signaling with respect to how the UE reports applicable functionalities to serving cell using a network-indicated associated ID. Note that in such cases as may relate to only communications with a present serving cell, there is no functional difference between cases where a cell-specific associated ID is being used and where a PLMN-specific associated ID is being used.

[0045] Further, embodiments herein relate procedures and signaling with respect to how the UE reports applicable functionalities during handover and / or link recovery, under different cases for the use of associated ID. Note that such cases relate to the use of associated ID as between different cells. Accordingly, there may or may not be consistency of meaning of the associated ID across the cells (e.g., as between cases of cell-specific associated ID use versus PLMN-specific associated ID use) ; related aspects will accordingly be discussed.

[0046] Embodiments herein relate to procedures and signaling with respect to how a UE reports applicable functionalities with / within a serving cell using an associated ID.

[0047] Further, embodiments herein relate to procedures and signaling with respect to how a UE reports applicable functionalities as between cells (e.g., during handover and / or link recovery) using an associated ID (and under different possible cases with respect to any consistency of meaning of the associated ID as between different cells) . Some such embodiments correspond to cases where the associated ID is PLMN-specific (where the associated ID represents the same additional condition whenever it is used within any cell of the PLMN) . In first such cases, associated ID (s) of neighbor cell (s) are included in measurement configuration messaging to the UE, and the UE reports applicable functionalities for neighbor cell (s) via measurement reporting messaging. In second such cases, associated ID (s) of a target cell are included in a handover command, and the UE reports applicable functionalities for the neighbor / target cell (e.g., via a RRCReconfigurationComplete message) . In third such cases, a source cell exchanges the UE’s applicable functionality (s) and their mapped associated ID (s) with neighbor cells via inter-node messaging, and the neighbor cells respond with valid / useable applicable  functionality (s) for that cell. In fourth such cases, the UE includes its applicable functionality (s) and their mapped associated ID (s) within its access stratum (AS) context. Then, as a result of RRC reestablishment or RRC resume, the new serving cell becomes aware of the UE's AS context and thus knows the UE’s applicable functionalities.

[0048] Some embodiments discussed herein that relate procedures and signaling with respect to how a UE reports applicable functionalities as between cells assume that an associated ID is cell-specific (that the associated ID represents the same additional condition whenever used within that cell) but where another cell does not (or at least is not guaranteed to) use the associated ID for that additional condition. In such cases, the first, second, and fourth cases discussed previously can be reused after being enhanced to further indicate a cell identifier corresponding to the associated ID (s) , as will be discussed further.

[0049] Embodiments for Applicable Functionality Reporting in Serving Cell

[0050] FIG. 2 illustrates a flow diagram 200 for applicable functionality reporting between a UE 202 and a serving cell 204, according to embodiments herein. Note that while FIG. 2 provides an example of a beam management AI / ML model use case, procedures for applicable functionality reporting discussed herein should be understood to be analogously useable in other possible cases (e.g., a UE positioning AI / ML model use case, etc. ) .

[0051] First, a UE may report a set of supported functionalities to a serving cell via a UE capability report message. Note that the granularity of this supported functionality as indicated corresponds to the AI / ML sub-use case under specific network-sided additional condition (s) which the UE is capable of using. For example, the support may be indicated for AI / ML-based beam prediction in a temporal domain under various network-side additional conditions.

[0052] In the example of FIG. 2, the UE 202 sends the serving cell 204 a UE capability report message 206 that reports that the UE 202 is capable of using an AI / ML model for beam prediction for (each of) cases where the serving cell 204 uses 2 transmit (TX) beams (2TX) , cases where the serving cell 204 uses 4 TX beams (4TX) , and cases where the base station uses 8 Tx beams (2TX) . Note that each of these states (2TX, 4TX, and 8TX) represents a network-side additional condition as understood herein. In this  example, it may be that the UE reports 3 bits in the UE capability report message 206 for indicating its capability of 2TX, 4TX and 8TX respectively.

[0053] Note that a UE capability report message does not represent that the UE is (necessarily) presently in possession of an AI / ML model for the associated network-side additional conditions; merely that the UE is capable of using such an AI / ML model corresponding to such additional conditions once acquired.

[0054] FIG. 2 also illustrates a set of UE assumptions 208 corresponding to the indicated additional conditions (e.g., that in the case of 2TX, the UE will use 2 receive (RX) antennas, that in the case of 4TX, the UE will use 4 RX antennas, and that in the case of 8TX, the UE with use 2 RX antennas, as illustrated) .

[0055] Once the network is aware of the network-side additional conditions under which the UE may operate, the serving cell may send the UE a training configuration message that provides the UE with associated ID (s) corresponding to different training data collection configurations that are consistent with the previously indicated network-side additional conditions.

[0056] In some such cases, one associated ID corresponds to one specific network implementation / configuration.

[0057] In other cases, one or multiple associated IDs can be associated with one supported capability. For example it may be that corresponding to the UE's indicated capability of AI / ML-based beam prediction in temporal domain based on a 4TX codebook, the network indicates an associated ID = 2 that represents the use of a for 4TX*4RX codebook, associated ID = 4 that represents the use of a 4TX*2RX codebook with a 15 degree down tilt, and associated ID = 5 that represents the use of a 4TX*2RX codebook with a 30 degree down tilt. Note that in such cases, the precise nature of the physical configuration of the network behind one associated ID remains transparent to the UE.

[0058] In the example of FIG. 2, the serving cell 204 sends the UE 202 a training configuration message 210 that indicates associated ID = 2 and 3. As illustrated, this means that the serving cell 204 is prepared to send the UE 202 a set B of channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) resources that are measured to generate a set of predicted measurements according to AI / ML models for each of the 4TX (associated ID = 2) and 8TX (associated ID = 3) cases previously indicated by the UE in the UE capability report message 206. As illustrated, the UE understands these associated IDs in  terms of its UE assumptions 208 such that the use of associated ID = 2 is understood to correspond to a use of a 4TX*4RX codebook at the UE and the use of associated ID = 3 is understood to correspond to a use of an 8TX*2TX codebook at the UE.

[0059] The UE then collects dataset (s) (arriving as signaling from the serving cell 204) that correspond to / are labeled with the associated ID (s) for use as training data in the training 212 of AI / ML (s) models for those associated ID (s) (for example, one AI / ML model is trained for each associated ID) .

[0060] Once the training of AI / ML models for the associated IDs of the training configuration message are trained, the serving cell may send the UE an applicable functionality reporting configuration message. This applicable functionality reporting configuration message may be an RRC message. The applicable functionality reporting configuration message may indicate a configuration for proactive and / or reactive reporting for one or more associated IDs (and thus their associated AI / ML models) .

[0061] Under proactive reporting, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message includes associated ID (s) for which the network is presently prepared to provide signaling for purposes of inferencing at the UE using the corresponding AI / ML model.

[0062] Under reactive reporting, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message includes (optionally) a timer, associated ID (s) for which the network is presently prepared to provide signaling for purposes of inferencing at the UE using the corresponding AI / ML model, and (optionally) corresponding inference configuration (s) for these reported associated ID (s) . The timer may be a timer corresponding to the use of a reporting message and a responsive inference configuration message (e.g., as described elsewhere herein) . If the timer is configured, it uses a single value that is common to all associated ID (s) and inference configuration (s) provided in the applicable functionality reporting configuration message.

[0063] The inference configuration (s) may each represent a configuration at least of a resource (e.g. CSI-RS set A in the BM case) used for inference and how the inference is performed (e.g. periodicity and / or frequency for the inference) . If the inference configuration (s) are configured, they correspond to the provided associated ID (s) on a 1: 1 basis.

[0064] In the example of FIG. 2, the serving cell 204 sends the UE 202 an applicable functionality reporting configuration message 214 that indicates associated ID = 1 and associated ID = 2. This means that that the serving cell 204 is prepared to signal sets A  of beams to the UE that correspond to the use of AI / ML models for each of associated ID = 1 and associated ID = 2.

[0065] Note preliminarily that an AI / ML model for associated ID = 1 was not trained at the UE 202. Accordingly, it will be understood that an applicable functionality reporting configuration message is not restricted to the use of associated IDs for which an AI / ML model is actually available at any particular UE.

[0066] Note also that the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 214 does not include an indication of associated ID = 3 (which was trained at the UE) . It will be noted that in the example of FIG. 2, the serving cell 204 has turned off 216 its own use of 8TX for power saving reasons. Thus, as associated ID = 3 corresponds to an 8TX additional condition at the network, the serving cell 204 is not presently prepared to signal a set A of beams for used with the AI / ML model corresponding associated ID = 3 and so does not include associated ID = 3 in the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 214.

[0067] After receiving an applicable functionality reporting configuration message, a UE determines whether each functionality identified by associated ID (s) given in the applicable functionality reporting configuration message should be reported as an applicable functionality. A functionality for an associated ID may be determined to be applicable in the case that the AI / ML model for the associated ID is already available at the device (e.g., the UE has completed model training for the AI / ML model, any downloading of the AI / ML model to the UE from a AI / ML model server is completed, etc. ) .

[0068] In some cases, a check whether a functionality identified for an associated ID is applicable may further check whether any UE-side additional condition (s) for the use of the AI / ML model for the associated ID are met. These may include, for example, one or more UE-internal statuses (e.g., a battery status, a memory status, etc. ) .

[0069] Finally, the check whether the functionality identified for an associated ID is applicable may further ensure that the associated ID of the dataset which was used to train the model is the same as the associated ID in the applicable functionality reporting configuration message (thereby ensuring that the training of the AI / ML model for the associated ID is / was consistent with inference use with the AI / ML model for the associated ID) .

[0070] Note in various places within discussion herein, the associated ID for a functionality that has been determined to be applicable in this manner may be referred to as an “applicable associated ID. ”

[0071] In the example of FIG. 2, the UE 202 determines 218 that the functionality identified by associated ID = 2 is applicable at / to the UE 202. This is in response to a determination that an AI / ML model for associated ID = 2 exists at the UE 202 (as described above) .

[0072] After determining that one or more functionality (s) identified by an associated ID is applicable, the UE reports the corresponding associated ID (s) for these applicable functionality (s) to the network in a reporting message. In some embodiments, this reporting message is or includes an RRC message.

[0073] In some such cases, proactive reporting in used. In proactive reporting cases, the UE reports the applicable associated ID (s) using a UAI message. In at least some such cases, this UAI message does not report about any non-applicable associated IDs. Further, corresponding to any change of the applicable associated ID (s) list later in time, the UE may report the latest set of applicable associated ID (s) to the network via UAI.

[0074] In some such cases, reactive reporting is used. In reactive reporting cases, for each associated ID that was included by the serving cell in an applicable functionality reporting configuration message as described, the UE reports whether that associated ID is applicable or non-applicable. In some cases, a 1-bit indication may be used for these indications. In some such cases, these indications are part of an RRC message (e.g., a MeasurementResult message or an RRCReconfigurationComplete message) .

[0075] In some cases of reactive reporting, for any associated ID which is non-applicable, the UE may optionally include a reason code or a like indication. Possible reasons which may be indicated using this indication include, for example: a “training not complete” reason, a “model downloading not complete” reason, a ” UE additional condition not met” reason, and / or a “no associated ID (s) of available AI / ML model (s) match to this associated ID” reason.

[0076] In some cases for reactive reporting, it may be that the UE reports associated ID (s) of its available models which are not same as any associated ID (s) given in the applicable functionality reporting configuration message received at the UE. In the example of FIG. 2, this would correspond to a report of this kind for associated ID = 3.

[0077] In some cases for reactive reporting, if a timer is configured, the UE may start the timer upon successfully transmitting the reporting message. Then, the UE may stop the timer upon reception of a responsive inference configuration message. Alternatively, if the timer expires, the UE may: immediately apply inference configuration (s) corresponding to associated ID (s) which have been reported as “applicable” and perform their inference operation (s) . Further, for inference configuration (s) corresponding to associated ID (s) which are reported as “non-applicable, ” the UE may, in a first alternative, discard these inference configuration (s) or may, in a second alternative, fall back to non-AI operation corresponding to these configuration (s) . In alternative cases where a timer is not configured, the UE may immediately apply inference configuration (s) corresponding to associated ID (s) which are determined as “applicable. ” and perform their inference operation (s) .

[0078] In the example of FIG. 2, the UE 202 sends the serving cell 204 a reporting message 220 that, based on reactive reporting, indicates that associated ID = 1 is a non-applicable associated ID and that associated ID = 2 is an applicable associated ID.

[0079] After the reporting message is sent, the network responds to the UE with an AI / ML functionality activation indication. The AI / ML functionality activation indication indicates one or more associated ID (s) that are some subset of the applicable associated IDs reported in the reporting message. The AI / ML functionality activation indication may further include corresponding inference configuration for these associated ID (s) . Upon reception of the AI / ML functionality activation indication, the UE applies the corresponding configuration (s) and activates the AI / ML model (s) corresponding to the functionalities for these associated ID (s) for use in inferencing.

[0080] In the example of FIG. 2, after receiving the reporting message 220, the serving cell 204 responds with an AI / ML functionality activation indication 222 indicating associated ID = 2 and a corresponding inference configuration. The UE 202 accordingly selects the AI / ML model for associated ID = 2 for use, configures according to the provided inference configuration, and proceeds to use the AI / ML model to perform inferencing 224. As illustrated, consistent with discussion above, this AI / ML model is used at the UE to perform inferencing according to a 4TX*4RX codebook.

[0081] Embodiments for Handover using PLMN-Specific associated IDs

[0082] FIG. 3 illustrates a flow diagram 300 for first embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs. The flow diagram 300 illustrates communications between a UE 302, a source cell 304 that initially acts as the serving cell of the UE 302, a first neighbor cell 306 to the UE 302, and a second neighbor cell 308 to the UE 302.

[0083] These first embodiments may begin analogously to embodiments for applicable functionality reporting for a serving cell. For example, in the example of FIG. 3, the UE capability report message 310, the training configuration message 312, the training 314, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 316, and the reporting message 318 are analogous to those same messages as used in embodiments for applicable functionality reporting in a serving cell as described elsewhere herein. Corresponding to the particular embodiment shown in the example of FIG. 3, it will be noted that during the training 314, the UE 302 trains AI / ML model (s) for associated ID =1, associated ID = 2, associated ID = 3, and associated ID = 4 based on indications of those same associated IDs in the training configuration message 312 from the source cell 304. Then, as shown, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 316 that is later sent to the UE 302 includes indications of associated ID = 1, associated ID =2, and associated ID = 4, indicating to the UE 302 that the source cell 304 is prepared to provide signaling according to signaling corresponding to any / each of associated ID = 1, associated ID = 2, and associated ID = 4. According, to this information, the UE 302 determines that each of associated ID = 1, associated ID = 2, and associated ID = 4 is an applicable functionality (e.g., the UE possesses an AI / ML model for the functionalities of these associated IDs) and so indicates these associated IDs as applicable functionalities in the reporting message 318 from the UE 302 to the source cell 304.

[0084] With respect to these first embodiments, at some point in time, a source cell determines to trigger a handover evaluation. Once a source cell decides to trigger the handover evaluation, it exchanges associated ID information with one or more neighbor cells via inter-node messaging. This inter-node messaging may provide the source cell with associated ID (s) for network-side additional condition (s) that are able to be applied at each of the neighbor cell (s) . Note that in some embodiments, inter-node message used as part of this messaging can be or include a HandoverPreparationInformation message.

[0085] In the example of FIG. 3, the source cell 304 triggers 320 a handover evaluation and accordingly uses first inter-node messaging 322 with the first neighbor cell 306 to determine that the first neighbor cell 306 is able to apply the network-side additional  condition that corresponds to associated ID = 3 and further uses second inter-node messaging 324 with the second neighbor cell 308 to determine that the second neighbor cell 308 is able to apply the network-side additional condition that corresponds to associated ID = 5.

[0086] After determining the associated ID (s) for network-side additional condition (s) that are useable at each of the neighbor cell (s) , the source cell sends the UE a measurement configuration message indicating the associated ID (s) corresponding to the network-side additional condition (s) that are available at the neighbor cell (s) , thereby configuring the UE to report applicable functionalities corresponding to these associated IDs. The measurement configuration message may be an RRC message (e.g., an RRCReconfiguration message) . The measurement configuration message may configure the UE for reactive reporting corresponding to applicable functionality (s) to be reported, as is described elsewhere herein.

[0087] Note that in cases of PLMN-specific associated ID schemes, cell ID information may be unnecessary as associated IDs have the same meaning throughout all cells of the PLMN.

[0088] Using the associated ID information from the measurement configuration message, the UE identifies applicable functionality (s) at the UE for those associated ID (s) (e.g., by determining whether the UE possesses AI / ML model (s) for those associated ID (s) and / or whether the an applicable functionality reporting configuration message provided to the UE indicates that at least one neighbor cell is able to provide signaling corresponding to the functionally for that associated ID) . The UE then replies to the source cell with an applicable functionality message that indicates one or more of the associated ID (s) from the measurement configuration message for which the UE has identified an applicable functionality at the UE. The applicable functionality message may be or include an RRC message (e.g., an RRCReconfigurationComplete for measurement message) . This applicable functionality message may be sent corresponding to reactive reporting.

[0089] In the example of FIG. 3, after determining that the first neighbor cell 306 is able to apply the network-side additional condition that corresponds to associated ID = 3 and that the second neighbor cell 308 is able to apply the network-side additional condition that corresponds to associated ID = 5, the source cell 304 sends the UE a measurement configuration message 328 that indicates associated ID = 3 and associated  ID = 5, as illustrated. Using these associated IDs, the UE determines that there is a functionality at the UE 302 for associated ID = 3. Accordingly, the UE indicates associated ID = 3 as an applicable functionality in the applicable functionality message 330. Note that the UE does not indicate associated ID = 5 as the UE does not possess an AI / ML model for associated ID = 5.

[0090] Based on its awareness of any associated ID (s) for applicable functionality (s) at the UE, the source cell takes a handover decision (e.g., the source cell identifies one of the neighbor cell (s) to which the UE is to be handed over) . For example, the source cell may determine, based on the associated ID (s) for applicable functionality (s) at the UE, that the UE has possession of an AI / ML model for one of the associated ID (s) and thus decides that the UE is to perform a handover to a neighbor cell that reported that associated ID (and is accordingly capable of providing signaling to the UE that is for generating an inference using that AI / ML model) .

[0091] In the example of FIG. 3, after receiving the applicable functionality message 330 and thereby becoming aware that associated ID = 3 corresponds to an applicable functionality at the UE, the source cell 304 makes a handover decision 326 to hand the UE 302 over to the first neighbor cell 306, based (at least in part) on the report of the associated ID = 3 to the source cell 304 as part of the first inter-node messaging 322, according to the reasoning described above.

[0092] After making the handover decision as described, the source cell sends a corresponding handover command to the UE that indicates that the UE is to handover to the selected neighbor cell. The UE then sends that destination / target neighbor cell an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to effectuate its handover to that neighbor cell. In response, the neighbor cell sends the UE an inference configuration message, which may indicate the relevant associated ID, thereby instructing the UE to use the AI / ML model for that associated ID with signaling from the neighbor cell.

[0093] In the example of FIG. 3, after making the handover decision 326, the source cell 304 sends a handover command 332 to the UE 302 that indicates that the UE 302 is to handover to the first neighbor cell 306. The UE 302 then sends the first neighbor cell 306 an RRCReconfigurationComplete message 334 to effectuate its handover to the first neighbor cell 306. In response, the first neighbor cell 306 sends the UE 302 an inference configuration message 336 indicating associated ID = 3, thereby instructing the UE 302  to use its AI / ML model for associated ID = 3 with signaling from the first neighbor cell 306.

[0094] FIG. 4 illustrates a flow diagram 400 for second embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs. The flow diagram 400 illustrates communications between a UE 402, a source cell 404 that initially acts as the serving cell of the UE 402, a first neighbor cell 406 to the UE 402, and a second neighbor cell 408 to the UE 402.

[0095] These second embodiments may begin analogously to embodiments for applicable functionality reporting for a serving cell. For example, in the example of FIG. 4, the UE capability report message 410, the training configuration message 412, the training 414, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 416, and the reporting message 418 are analogous to those same messages as used in embodiments for applicable functionality reporting in a serving cell as described elsewhere herein. Further, note that in the example of FIG. 4, the specifics of the UE capability report message 410, the training configuration message 412, the training 414, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 416, and the reporting message 418 may be as was described in relation to the UE capability report message 310, the training configuration message 312, the training 314, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 316, and the reporting message 318 of FIG. 3. Note that in cases corresponding to these second embodiments, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 416 and the reporting message 418 may be optional (as illustrated) and accordingly may not be used.

[0096] Such second embodiments for handover may make a handover decision without the use of any prior UE reporting of applicable functionality (s) for neighbor cell (s) . In the example of FIG. 4, as shown, the source cell 404 takes the handover decision 420 to hand the UE 402 over to the first neighbor cell 406 (and not to the second neighbor cell 408) without receiving reporting of applicable functionality (s) for neighbor cell (s) from the UE (compare the example of FIG. 3 and the use of the measurement configuration message 328 and the applicable functionality message 330 therein) .

[0097] Once the source cell has identified a destination / target neighbor cell through its handover decision, the source cell performs inter-node messaging with that neighbor cell in order to determine any network-side additional conditions (as corresponding to their associated ID (s) ) that the neighbor cell is able to apply. In the example of FIG. 4, as illustrated, after taking the handover decision 420 through which the first neighbor cell  406 is identified as the target-destination neighbor cell, the source cell 404 performs the inter-node messaging 422 with the first neighbor cell 406 during which the first neighbor cell 406 communicates to the source cell 404 that the first neighbor cell 406 can apply network-side additional conditions corresponding to associated ID = 3 and to associated ID = 5.

[0098] After learning of available network-side additional conditions at the target / destination neighbor cell as described, the source cell sends a corresponding handover command to the UE that indicates that the UE is to handover to the neighbor cell. This handover commands includes associated ID (s) for network-side additional conditions that the target / destination neighbor cell can apply. This handover command may instruct the UE to report, to the target / destination neighbor cell, any applicable functionality (s) corresponding to the target / destination neighbor cell's associated ID (s) as found in the handover command.

[0099] The UE then sends the destination / target neighbor cell an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to effectuate its handover to that neighbor cell. This RRCReconfigurationComplete message may include an indication of any associated ID (s) reported in the handover command for which the UE has an applicable functionality (e.g., for which the UE possesses a corresponding AI / ML model) . This RRCReconfigurationComplete message may represent reactive reporting, as described elsewhere herein.

[0100] In response, the neighbor cell sends the UE an inference configuration message, which may indicate one of these associated ID (s) (e.g., as indicated by the UE in the RRCReconfigurationComplete message) , thereby instructing the UE to use the AI / ML model for that associated ID with signaling from the neighbor cell.

[0101] In the example of FIG. 4, after learning that the first neighbor cell 406 can apply network-side additional conditions corresponding to associated ID = 3 and associated ID = 5, the source cell 404 sends a handover command 424 to the UE 402 that indicates that the UE 402 is to handover to the first neighbor cell 406, and that further identifies associated ID = 3 and associated ID = 5 as usable by the first neighbor cell 406. The handover command 424 may instruct the UE 402 to report, to the first neighbor cell 406, any applicable functionality (s) corresponding to these associated IDs.

[0102] The UE 402 then sends the first neighbor cell 406 an RRCReconfigurationComplete message 426 to effectuate its handover to the first  neighbor cell 406. The UE 402 may determine that it has an applicable functionality for associated ID = 3 (e.g., that the UE possesses a AI / ML model for associated ID = 3) and may accordingly include an indication of any associated ID = 3 in the RRCReconfigurationComplete message 426 that it sends to the first neighbor cell 406. Note that the UE does not indicate associated ID = 5 in the RRCReconfigurationComplete message 426 as the UE does not possess an AI / ML model for associated ID = 5.

[0103] In response to the RRCReconfigurationComplete message 426, the first neighbor cell 406 sends the UE 402 an inference configuration message 428, which may indicate associated ID = 3 (e.g., as was indicated by the UE in the RRCReconfigurationComplete message 426) , thereby instructing the UE 402 to use the AI / ML model for associated ID = 3 with signaling from the first neighbor cell 406.

[0104] Comparing such second embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs with first embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs as described herein in relation to FIG. 3 that use messages like the measurement configuration message 328 and the applicable functionality message 330 prior to taking a handover decision, it may be understood that the number of exchange signaling can be relatively reduced in the second embodiments.

[0105] FIG. 5 illustrates a flow diagram 500 for third embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs. The flow diagram 500 illustrates communications between a UE 502, a source cell 504 that initially acts as the serving cell of the UE 502, a first neighbor cell 506 to the UE 502, and a second neighbor cell 508 to the UE 502.

[0106] These third embodiments may begin analogously to embodiments for applicable functionality reporting for a serving cell. For example, in the example of FIG. 5, the UE capability report message 510, the training configuration message 512, the training 514, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 516, and the reporting message 518 are analogous to those same messages as used in embodiments for applicable functionality reporting in a serving cell as described elsewhere herein. Further, note that in the example of FIG. 5, the specifics of the UE capability report message 510, the training configuration message 512, the training 514, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 516, and the reporting message 518 may be as was described in relation to the UE capability report message 310, the training  configuration message 312, the training 314, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 316, and the reporting message 318 of FIG. 3.

[0107] As will be described, these third embodiments do not use a UE report of applicable functionalities that is specific to / informed by any knowledge at the UE of network-side additional conditions applicable at neighbor cells. Instead, these embodiments use an exchange of information between source cell and neighbor cells that is informed by UE's initial / general report of associated ID (s) for which applicable functionalities exist at the UE.

[0108] In the example of FIG. 5, this corresponds to the use, by the source cell 504, of knowledge of applicable functionalities at the UE 502 that is provided to the source cell 504 by the UE 502 by the UE in the reporting message 518 (where, as seen, the reporting message 518 is not constructed / based on any knowledge at the UE 502 of network-side additional conditions at either of the first neighbor cell 506 or the second neighbor cell 508) .

[0109] Then, it will be understood that once a source cell triggers a handover evaluation, it may use its knowledge of associated ID (s) of applicable functionalities that are generally available at the UE to query any neighbor cells with respect to those associated ID (s) using a query message. Such a query message may take the form of an RRC message (e.g., an RRCReconfiguration for measurement message) . This query message may be understood as an example of reactive reporting as described herein.

[0110] Within the query message to a neighbor cell, the source cell includes associated ID (s) corresponding to UE-reported applicable functionalities. A query response message sent back to the source cell from the neighbor cell indicates one or more of these associated ID (s) for which the source cell can apply the corresponding network-side additional condition.

[0111] In the example of FIG. 5, once the source cell 504 triggers 520 a handover evaluation, it sends the first query message 522 to the first neighbor cell 506 and the second query message 526 to the second neighbor cell 508. As illustrated, each of the first query message 522 and the first query response message 524 includes associated ID = 1, associated ID = 2, and associated ID = 4, which is consistent with the previous indications of these associated IDs in the reporting message 518.

[0112] In response to the first query message 522, the first neighbor cell 506 sends the source cell 504 a first query response message 524 that indicates associated ID = 2,  indicating that the first neighbor cell 506 is able to provide network signaling consistent with network-side additional conditions corresponding to associated ID = 2 as was indicated in the first query message 522. Further, in response to the second query message 526, the second neighbor cell 508 sends the source cell 504 a second query response message 528 that indicates associated ID = 4, indicating that the second neighbor cell 508 is able to provide network signaling consistent with network-side additional conditions corresponding to associated ID = 4 as was indicated in the second query message 526.

[0113] Upon receiving list (s) of supported associated ID (s) from the neighbor cell (s) , the source cell then makes a handover decision using the information of those list (s) as compared to its understanding of applicable functionalities at the UE.

[0114] In the example of FIG. 5, based (at least in part) on the fact that the first neighbor cell 506 indicated in the second query response message 528 that it can support network-side additional conditions for associated ID = 4 (an associated ID for which the source cell 504 is already aware the UE 502 considers and applicable functionality, per the prior receipt of the reporting message 518 from the UE 502) , the source cell 504 determines to hand the UE 502 over to the first neighbor cell 506. (Note that under the example of FIG. 5, the second neighbor cell 508 was also eligible for the handover for analogous reasons with respect to associated ID = 4 and could have been selected alternatively) .

[0115] After making the handover decision as described, the source cell sends a corresponding handover command to the UE that indicates that the UE is to handover to the selected neighbor cell. The UE then sends the destination / target neighbor cell an RRCReconfigurationComplete message to effectuate its handover to that neighbor cell. In response, the neighbor cell sends the UE an inference configuration message, which may indicate the relevant associated ID, thereby instructing the UE to use the AI / ML model for that associated ID with signaling from the neighbor cell.

[0116] In the example of FIG. 5, after making the handover decision 530, the source cell 504 sends a handover command 532 to the UE 502 that indicates that the UE 502 is to handover to the first neighbor cell 506. The UE 502 then sends the first neighbor cell 506 an RRCReconfigurationComplete message 534 to effectuate its handover to the first neighbor cell 506. In response, the first neighbor cell 506 sends the UE 502 an inference configuration message 536 indicating associated ID = 2, thereby instructing the UE 502  to use its AI / ML model for associated ID = 2 with signaling from the first neighbor cell 506.

[0117] FIG. 6 illustrates a flow diagram 600 for fourth embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs. The flow diagram 600 illustrates communications between a UE 602, a source cell 604 that initially acts as the serving cell of the UE 602, a first neighbor cell 606 to the UE 602, and a second neighbor cell 608 to the UE 602.

[0118] These fourth embodiments may begin analogously to embodiments for applicable functionality reporting for a serving cell. For example, in the example of FIG. 6, the UE capability report message 610, the training configuration message 612, the training 614, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 616, and the reporting message 618 are analogous to those same messages as used in embodiments for applicable functionality reporting in a serving cell as described elsewhere herein. Further, note that in the example of FIG. 6, the specifics of the UE capability report message 610, the training configuration message 612, the training 614, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 616, and the reporting message 618 may be as was described in relation to the UE capability report message 310, the training configuration message 312, the training 314, the applicable functionality reporting configuration message 316, and the reporting message 318 of FIG. 3.

[0119] Corresponding to these fourth embodiments, it may be understood that a UE includes its applicable functionalities and their mapped associated ID (s) in its access stratum (AS) context. This AS context may be received by a neighbor cell that is a target cell of a random access channel (RACH) procedure with the UE. For example, it may be that, pertaining to a RACH procedure between a target neighbor cell that is other than a (prior source cell) and the UE, the target neighbor cell will retrieve this AS context (which includes the UE’s applicable functionality (s)  / associated ID (s) therefore) from the source cell. This may occur along with / corresponding to reception, at the target neighbor cell of, for example, a message 3 (Msg3) or a message A (MsgA) of the RACH procedure (e.g., along with / corresponding to reception of one of an RRCreestablishmentRequest message or an RRCresumeRequest message within the RACH procedure) .

[0120] In the example of FIG. 6, the UE 602 undergoes 620 radio link failure (RLF) with the source cell 604 or otherwise falls to an RRC inactive state (RRC_INACTIVE) sometime after being in an RRC connected (RRC_CONNECTED) mode with the source  cell 604 as a serving cell. In response, the UE 602 initiates a first portion 622 of a RACH procedure with the first neighbor cell 606 (e.g., based on a measurement report that indicates that radio conditions of the first neighbor cell 606 are favorable (not illustrated) ) . In the example of FIG. 6, this first portion 622 includes a message 1 (Msg1) , a message 2 (Msg2) , and a Msg3 of a 4-step RACH procedure. (Note, however, that in alternative embodiments, a first portion of an applicable RACH procedure may instead include a MsgA of a 2-step RACH procedure) . As illustrated, in response to, e.g., the Msg3 of the first portion 622 of the RACH procedure, the first neighbor cell 606 uses inter-node messaging 624 to retrieve the AS context of the UE 602. This AS context includes the information that the UE 602 had previously trained AI / ML models for applicable functionalities corresponding to associated ID = 1, associated ID = 2, associated ID = 3, and associated ID = 4.

[0121] Based on the retrieved applicable functionality (s)  / associated ID (s) for the UE, the new serving cell can include associated ID (s) which the target cell intends to activate in a message 4 (Msg4) or a message B (MsgB) (e.g., in a RRCreestablishment message or an RRCresume message) of the RACH procedure that is sent to the UE, as the case may be. The associated IDs selected from the AS information and so indicated to the UE may may represent network-side additional conditions which can be applied at / by the neighbor cell.

[0122] In the example of FIG. 6, after retrieving the AS of the UE 602, the flow diagram 600 sends the UE a second portion 626 of the RACH procedure (including a Msg4) . This second portion 626 includes indications (in the Msg4) of associated ID = 1 and associated ID = 3.

[0123] Based on the information as provided in the Msg4 / MsgB, the UE can provide a confirmation indication message in a responsive to the RACH procedure (e.g., in an. RRCreestablishmentComplete message or an RRCresumeComplete message) . This confirmation indication message may be used to confirm the present status / availability of any applicable functionality (s) at the UE, as these may have changed (e.g., due to intervening memory and / or battery constraints at the UE) since the time the AS context of the UE was retrieved by the neighbor cell. In a first alternative, this confirmation indication message may include 1 bit for each associated ID included in the Msg4 / MsgB that indicates whether that associated ID is applicable or not. In a second alternative, this confirmation indication message may indicate a subset of the associated ID (s) included  in the Msg4 / MsgB that the UE considers as applicable associated IDs. In a third alternative, this confirmation indication message may indicate a subset of the associated ID (s) included in the Msg4 / MsgB that the UE does not consider as applicable associated IDs.

[0124] In the example of FIG. 6, the UE 602 sends the first neighbor cell 606 a confirmation indication message 628 identifying (using one of the alternatives described) that associated ID = 3 from the second portion 626 (the Msg4) corresponds to an applicable functionality at the UE.

[0125] Based on the feedback from the UE in the confirmation indication message 628, the first neighbor cell 606 configures the UE 602 to use an AI / ML model corresponding to a selected one of the associated ID (s) that are known to be applicable for use in inference generation.

[0126] In the example of FIG. 6, the first neighbor cell 606 sends the UE 602 an inference configuration message 630 indicating associated ID = 3, thereby instructing the UE 602 to use its AI / ML model for associated ID = 3 with signaling from the first neighbor cell 606.

[0127] Note that in some alternative cases of fourth embodiments as described, a confirmation indication message and / or an inference configuration message as described herein are not used.

[0128] Embodiments for Handover using Cell-Specific Associated IDs

[0129] In wireless communication systems where cell-specific (rather than, e.g., PLMN-specific) associated IDs are used, the assumption of associated ID consistency for a network-side additional condition does not (necessarily) extend to the usage of that associated ID across different cells (even within a same PLMN) .

[0130] Various modifications to the embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs as previously described herein that allow for the use of those embodiments in cases where cell-specific associated IDs, rather than PLMN-specific associated IDs, are used are now described.

[0131] In such cases, it may be that a cell-specific associated IDs are understood in terms of an corresponding cell ID for cell in which the associated ID is being used. For example, if two cells having separate cell IDs each indicate associated / use ID = 1, the system regards associated ID = 1 at / with the first cell as one associated ID and  associated ID = 1 at / with the second cell as a second (different) associated ID. Accordingly, two separate AI / ML models may be trained / used in such circumstances.

[0132] Cell ID information may be communicated in various ways. For example, a target cell ID may be included in a handover command from source cell. As another example, in case of RRC resume, a new serving cell can obtain the cell ID of the prior serving cell via an inactive radio network temporary identifier (I-RNTI) value included in Msg3 of the corresponding RACH procedure. As another example, in case of RRC re-establishment, a new serving cell can obtain a cell ID of the prior serving cell via a physical cell identity (PCI) included in Msg3 of a corresponding RACH procedure.

[0133] The second embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs (refer to FIG. 4 and related discussion) and the fourth embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs (refer to FIG. 6 and related discussion) can be reused without substantial change, due to the fact that a target cell ID is implicitly indicated to the UE in such cases.

[0134] In cases for the second embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs, the target cell ID is included in a handover command (e.g., in the handover command 424 in the example of FIG. 4) .

[0135] In cases for the fourth embodiments for handover using PLMN-specific associated IDs, the (prior) source cell ID is included in UE’s AS context that is communicated between the (prior) source cell and the target neighbor cell that is the target of the RACH procedure (e.g., is communicated from the source cell 604 to the first neighbor cell 606 as part of the inter-node messaging 624 in the example of FIG. 6) .

[0136] With respect to the first embodiments for handover using cell-specific associated IDs as described herein, such embodiments can be reused with the enhancement that a cell identifier is indicated together with associated ID information within a measurement configuration message and in an applicable functionality message.

[0137] FIG. 7 illustrates a flow diagram 700 for embodiments for handover using cell-specific associated IDs. The flow diagram 700 illustrates communications between a UE 702, a source cell 704 that initially acts as the serving cell of the UE 702, a first neighbor cell 706 to the UE 702, and a second neighbor cell 708 to the UE 702. FIG. 7 may correspond to the example of FIG. 3 for most messages. However, as illustrated, the measurement configuration message 710 includes cell ID information for cells that correspond to the associated IDs being indicated. Then, the UE uses this information to  report applicable functionalities as linked to their corresponding cell using such cell ID information in the applicable functionality message 712, as illustrated. (Compare e.g., the measurement configuration message 710 and applicable functionality message 712 of FIG. 7 to the measurement configuration message 328 and the applicable functionality message 330 of FIG. 3) .

[0138] In such cases, cell ID information may identify a cell using one of various alternative mechanism. In a first case, the cell ID information identifies a cell using a PCI and a frequency for the identified cell. In a second case, the cell ID information identifies a cell using a cell global identity (CGI) for the identified cell.

[0139] FIG. 8 illustrates a method 800 of a UE, according to embodiments discussed herein. The method 800 includes receiving 802, from a source cell, a measurement configuration message indicating a first associated ID corresponding to a first network-side additional condition at a first neighbor cell.

[0140] The method 800 further includes identifying 804 that there is a first applicable functionality at the UE for the first associated ID by determining that the UE comprises a first AI / ML model for the first associated ID.

[0145] In some embodiments of the method 800, the identifying that there is the first applicable functionality at the UE for the first associated ID further comprises one or more of: determining that a download of the AI / ML model for the first associated ID from a server to the UE is complete; determining that a UE-sided additional conditions for using the AI / ML model for the first associated ID is met; and confirming that the  dataset which was used to train the AI / ML model for the first associated ID was labeled with the first associated ID.

[0146] In some embodiments of the method 800, the measurement configuration message further comprises a second associated ID corresponding to a second network-side additional condition at a second neighbor cell. In some such embodiments, the method 800 further includes determining that there is a second applicable functionality at the UE for the second associated ID by determining that the UE comprises a second AI / ML model that is associated with the second associated ID, and wherein the applicable functionality message further indicates the second associated ID.

[0168] FIG. 11 illustrates an example architecture of a wireless communication system 1100, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The following description is provided for an example wireless communication system 1100 that operates in conjunction with the LTE system standards and / or 5G or NR system standards as provided by 3GPP technical specifications.

[0169] As shown by FIG. 11, the wireless communication system 1100 includes UE 1102 and UE 1104 (although any number of UEs may be used) . In this example, the UE 1102 and the UE 1104 are illustrated as smartphones (e.g., handheld touchscreen mobile computing devices connectable to one or more cellular networks) , but may also comprise any mobile or non-mobile computing device configured for wireless communication.

[0170] The UE 1102 and UE 1104 may be configured to communicatively couple with a RAN 1106. In embodiments, the RAN 1106 may be NG-RAN, E-UTRAN, etc. The UE 1102 and UE 1104 utilize connections (or channels) (shown as connection 1108 and connection 1110, respectively) with the RAN 1106, each of which comprises a physical communications interface. The RAN 1106 can include one or more base stations (such as base station 1112 and base station 1114) that enable the connection 1108 and connection 1110.

[0171] In this example, the connection 1108 and connection 1110 are air interfaces to enable such communicative coupling, and may be consistent with RAT (s) used by the RAN 1106, such as, for example, an LTE and / or NR.

[0172] In some embodiments, the UE 1102 and UE 1104 may also directly exchange communication data via a sidelink interface 1116. The UE 1104 is shown to be configured to access an access point (shown as AP 1118) via connection 1120. By way of example, the connection 1120 can comprise a local wireless connection, such as a connection consistent with any IEEE 802.11 protocol, wherein the AP 1118 may comprise a router. In this example, the AP 1118 may be connected to another network (for example, the Internet) without going through a CN 1124.

[0173] In embodiments, the UE 1102 and UE 1104 can be configured to communicate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals with each other or with the base station 1112 and / or the base station 1114 over a multicarrier communication channel in accordance with various communication techniques, such as, but not limited to, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication technique (e.g., for downlink communications) or a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication technique (e.g., for uplink and ProSe or sidelink communications) , although the scope of the embodiments is not limited in this respect. The OFDM signals can comprise a plurality of orthogonal subcarriers.
