Description

[0001] MOBILE ORTHODONTIC ACTIVATOR DEVICE

[0002] Cross-Reference to Related Applications

[0003] This patent application claims priority from Italian utility model application no . 202024000002767 filed on July 2 , 2024 , the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference .

[0004] Technical Sector

[0005] The present invention concerns a mobile orthodontic activator device .

[0006] In particular, the present invention concerns a movable , i . e . non- fixed, orthodontic activator device , which is configured in order to modi fy an incorrect posture of the teeth to cause the teeth to assume a correct position; the following description will refer explicitly to this without losing generality .

[0007] As is known, mobile orthodontic activator devices are removable oral appliances that are arranged inside the mouth of a patient who has an irregular dental posture in order to correct it and achieve a condition of regular (balanced and balanced) posture .

[0008] Some orthodontic activator devices comprise an arched body made of elastically deformable material that , when placed in the mouth, is arranged between the patient ' s upper and lower dental arches . The arched body contains an upper channel that sets the upper dental arch, and a lower channel that seats the lower dental arch .

[0009] The curved body also comprises a lingual flange which is positioned towards the tongue and is shaped to accommodate it , and on the opposite side , a vestibular flange , which in use separates the upper and lower lips . Generally, the various parts that make up the orthodontic activator device , namely the arcuate body, the channels , and the lingual and vestibular flanges , are shaped during the production of the orthodontic activator device according to pre-established shapes that depend on the postural correction to be implemented on the patient ' s teeth .

[0010] Currently, the procedure for correcting the posture of the teeth often requires the patient to use a series of orthodontic activating devices , each of which is able to carry out a speci fic dento-postural correction .

[0011] The problem with the orthodontic activator devices described is therefore represented by the fact that , in addition to af fecting the overall cost of a corrective procedure , they do not allow the dentist to reconfigure or remodel the shape of the arcuate body of the orthodontic activator device based on the patient ' s orthodontic needs .

[0012] Description of the Invention

[0013] The aim of this invention is therefore to provide an orthodontic activator device that , on the one hand, allows the dentist to simply and economically modi fy the shape of the arched body based on the correction intervention to be performed, and on the other hand reduces the economic impact on the cost of the dento-postural correction intervention .

[0014] According to the present invention, an orthodontic activator device is therefore created according to the attached claims .

[0015] The attached claims describe preferred embodiments of the present invention and form an integral part of this speci fication .

[0016] Brief Description of the Drawings This invention will now be described with reference to the attached drawings , which illustrate a non-limiting example of its implementation, in which :

[0022] -Figures 6 , 7 and 8 are the rear, front and side views respectively of the main body of the orthodontic activator device shown in Figure 1 ,

[0023] -Figure 9 is an exploded view of the orthodontic activator device according to a first embodiment .

[0024] Preferred Forms of Implementation of Invention

[0025] With reference to Figures 1 to 8 , number 1 indicates a mobile ( removable , not fixed) orthodontic activator device 1 as a whole .

[0026] The orthodontic activator device 1 is designed to correct the shape of a patient ' s upper and lower dental arches (not shown) in order to reposition the teeth in a correct position or posture so as to achieve balance , i . e . , equilibrium of the j aw j oint . In other words , the orthodontic activator device 1 can be worn inside a patient ' s mouth and is designed to balance the j aw j oint during use , reducing the imbalance of the j aw j oint and bringing it into a position considered correct .

[0027] It should be noted that the mobile orthodontic activator device 1 is designed to perform the function of a so-called "multi functional" activator, i . e . it is designed to mechanically stimulate the teeth so as to place them in a pre-established position ( ideal position) .

[0028] The operation is essentially based on the generation of a series of mechanical stimuli in at least five pre- established points inside the mouth, generally referred to as the " five buttons" of embryonic growth of the "mouth . " These internal ( stimulation) points are described in Professor Pedro Planas ' theory and, when stimulated correctly over time , cause a remodeling and rebalancing of the maxillofacial structure . These stimuli can be generated either in a so-called "passive" mode by the orthodontic / orthopedic oral appliance 1 when it is used during nighttime rest or for a few hours during the day, or in a so-called "active" mode , in which the patient performs a gymnastic-postural function through the oral appliance 1 to train the muscles of the mouth through a series of exercises such as tongue to palate, closed lips , bilateral and alternating chewing, to find a correct posture .

[0029] With reference to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 8 , the orthodontic activator device 1 comprises a main body 2 which is arch-shaped, i . e . approximately C-shaped . The main body 2 is structured in order that , when arranged in the patient ' s mouth, it is placed between the patient ' s upper dental arch and lower dental arch . According to an exemplary embodiment shown in Figures 5-8, the main body 2 is "monolithic", i.e. it is made from a single / unique piece.

[0030] As shown in Figures 5-8, the main body 2 is made of flexible elastic material and, when not deformed i.e. at rest, has a first shape.

[0031] According to an exemplary embodiment shown in Figures 1- 5, the elastically flexible material may be, for example, optionally based on: a thermoplastic polymeric material (elastomer type) , silicone, rubber, or similar elastic / flexible (soft) materials.

[0032] With reference to the example illustrated in Figures 1- 8, the main body 2 comprises a base 3. The base 3 is shaped like an arch and has two lateral portions 4 which are symmetrical to each other with respect to a central plane of symmetry S (shown in Figures 1-6) and define respective terminal parts of the base 3. The base 3 also comprises a central portion 5 which is interposed between the two lateral portions 4.

[0033] As shown in Figure 5, an upper channel 6 is formed on the upper face of the base 3 which extends along both the two lateral portions 4 and the central portion 5, and is shaped in such a way as to accommodate the teeth of the patient's upper dental arch.

[0034] As shown in Figures 6 and 7, on the lower face of the base 3, opposite the upper face, a lower channel 7 is obtained, which extends along both the lateral portions 4 and the central portion 5 and is shaped in order to lodge the patient's lower dental arch.

[0035] Conveniently, a transverse LI groove is made on the lateral portions 4. Conveniently, the transverse LI groove can be made on the upper canal 6 and / or on the lower canal . Conveniently, the LI groove can define a cutting line in proximity to the sixth ( tooth) . The cutting line has the technical ef fect of facilitating the dentist ' s task during work .

[0036] Referring to Figure 1 , 3 , the upper channel 6 is delimited posteriorly ( towards the tongue ) by an upper support wall 8 , which extends along a posterior perimeter edge 3a ( internal ) of the base 3 .

[0037] In the illustrated example , the upper support wall 8 is substantially convex and is shaped in order to rest on the superficial portion of the palate immediately adj acent to the upper dental arch . The upper support wall 8 preferably extends along the entire posterior perimeter edge 3a of the base 3 in order to internally delimit the upper canal 6 .

[0038] The upper canal 6 is delimited anteriorly ( towards the upper lip ) along the anterior perimeter edge of the base 3 by an upper flange 9 which is placed, in use , between the internal wall of the upper lip and the upper dental arch so as to separate them from each other .

[0039] The upper channel 6 is further delimited laterally along each of the two lateral portions 4 by two lateral flanges 4a .

[0040] As illustrated in Figure 1 , according to the present invention, the upper flange 9 is shaped in order to have a thickness that gradually reduces starting from the two opposite ends towards the symmetry plane S .

[0041] The upper flange 9 has a first thickness at its opposite ends which are connected to the lateral flanges 4a, and centrally, at the plane of symmetry S , a second thickness which is smaller than the first thickness . Preferably, the thickness of the upper flange 9 decreases progressively, from each of the two ends connected to a lateral flange 4a, towards its central portion crossed by the plane of symmetry S . More preferably, the upper flange 9 is shaped in order to have a thickness which progressively decreases along a section of the anterior perimeter edge 3b of the central portion 5 which is comprised between the premolar teeth, arranged in the upper dental arch, on opposite sides with respect to the plane of symmetry S .

[0042] The progressive reduction in thickness of the upper flange 9 along the edge of the central portion 5 increases the ease of use o f the orthodontic activator device 1 as it selectively eliminates compression on the anterior teeth, particularly on the upper incisors . The reduction in thickness allows the di f ference in containment forces of the upper lip and the lower lip to be simulated with a certain ef fectiveness .

[0043] An additional benefit is that the dentist can simply use a scalpel to weaken the edge of the upper flange 9 at the level of the symmetry plane when he or she considers it necessary to reduce the forces exerted by the flange on the teeth .

[0044] Furthermore , the orthodontic activator device 1 may be conveniently installed in the patient ' s mouth even when a fixed orthodontic appliance is already present , and vice versa .

[0045] With reference to Figures 1-4 , according to the present invention, the lower canal 7 is delimited anteriorly by a lower flange 15 which is interposed, in use , between the internal wall of the lower lip and the lower dental arch so as to separate them from each other . The lower flanges 15 and upper flange 9 form the vestibular flange . The lower canal 7 is delimited posteriorly ( towards the tongue ) by a lingual flange 16 . The lingual flange 16 comprises a ridge that extends along the posterior perimeter edge 3a of the base 3 so as to be adj acent to an internal tongue housing area . According to the invention, the lingual flange 16 extends vertically from the back wall of the lower canal 7 . This feature ha the ef fect that the tip of the tongue is positioned perfectly at the palatine nose spot .

[0046] With reference to Figures 1 -4 , the dental activator orthodontic device 1 also comprises a plurality of repere- reference marks 10 which are obtained on the main body 2 and are associated with respective dentofacial landmarks .

[0047] Conveniently, the repere-ref erence marks 10 are obtained on the lingual flange and / or on the vestibular flange . Conveniently, the repere-ref erence marks 10 can be made along the anterior perimeter edge 3b and / or along the posterior perimeter edge 3a of the base 3 .

[0048] Preferably, the repere-ref erence marks 10 may optionally comprise : recesses and / or blind holes and / or through holes and / or incisions made in the base 3 . It is understood that , in addition or as an alternative , the reference marks 10 may optionally be made in the upper flange 9 , in the lower flange 15 , in the lingual flange 16 , in the upper support wall 8 , or in the side flanges 4a .

[0049] Preferably, when the main body 2 is not deformed and has the first shape ( Figures 4 - 8 ) , the 1 are arranged at first pre-established distances from each other and / or in first pre-established positions , one with respect to the other .

[0050] The dental activating orthodontic device 1 further comprises one or more deforming inserts 21 which are provided with protruding elements 11 configured in order to be selectively inserted, in a stable but easily separable and removable manner, into respective repere-ref erence marks 10 of the main body 2 to couple the relevant deforming insert 11 to the main body 2 .

[0051] According to a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 , the deforming insert 21 when coupled to the main body 2 modi fies the main body 2 from the first predetermined shape to a second predetermined shape , di f ferent from the first shape itsel f .

[0052] According to a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 , when a deforming insert 21 is coupled to the main body 2 to deform it into the second predetermined tooth activation shape , the repere-ref erence marks 10 are arranged at second predetermined distances from each other, di f ferent from the first distances , and / or in second predetermined positions with respect to each other, di f ferent from the first positions .

[0053] According to a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4 , a deforming insert 21 is configured so that when it is coupled to the main body 2 it causes a selective change in the shape and / or position of at least one lateral portion 4 of the main body 2 relative to the shape and / or relative position of the lateral portion 4 in the first form of tooth activation .

[0054] Preferably, a deforming insert 21 is configured such that , when coupled to the main body 2 , it causes a selective change in the shape and / or position of at least one lateral portion 4 of the main body 2 relative to the relative shape and / or position of the lateral portion 4 in the first form of tooth activation . Conveniently, a deforming insert 21 is configured such that when coupled to the main body 2 it causes a spacing or widening of at least one lateral portion 4 of the main body 2 relative to the other lateral portion 4 in the first form of tooth activation .

[0055] Conveniently, a deforming insert 21 is configured such that when coupled to the main body 2 it selectively causes a narrowing of at least one lateral portion 4 of the main body 2 relative to the other lateral portion 4 .

[0056] Conveniently, a deforming insert 11 is configured such that , when coupled to the main body 2 , it causes a predetermined torsion / rotation on at least one of the two lateral portions 4 of the main body 2 about its longitudinal axis relative to its position in the first predetermined shape .

[0057] In other words , the deforming insert 21 may be conf igured in order to selectively impress on the two lateral portions 4 of the main body 2 pre-established torsional movements that arrange the lateral portions 4 on respective non- coplanar planes in the second activating configuration . This embodiment is advantageous in that it allows the dentist to rebalance the occlusal plane .

[0058] Conveniently, the deforming insert 21 is designed so that it can be manually coupled onto the lingual flange or the vestibular flange of the main body 2 .

[0059] According to a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 4 , the deforming insert 21 may comprise an element of semicircular or arched shape . The coupling elements 12 may comprise oblong elements structured to be driven into the respective repere-ref erence marks 10 of the body 2 . Conveniently, the oblong elements may comprise pegs or nails made of rigid and / or hard material .

[0060] According to a preferred embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 4 , the deforming insert 21 may comprise a plate or a rod or a bar from which protruding elements 12 extend in a cantilevered manner, which are shaped in order to be manually inserted (by the dentist ) in a stable but easily removable manner into the repere-ref erence marks 10 to mechanically connect the deforming insert 21 to the main body 2 .

[0061] The deforming insert 21 may also comprise anchoring elements 18 which are stably arranged on the plate on the opposite side to the protruding elements . According to a possible embodiment , the deforming insert 21 may comprise an elastic device , for example an elastic chain, which is structured in order to selectively couple in a stable , but easily removable / separable manner, at least one anchoring element 18 to at least one other anchoring element 28 in order to cause a pre-established elastic traction between the pre-established points of the deforming insert 11 so as to implement a further deformation on the main body 2 .

[0062] The deforming insert 21 may also comprise anchoring elements 18 which are stably arranged on the plate on the opposite side to the protruding elements . According to a possible embodiment , the deforming insert 21 may comprise an elastic device , for example an elastic chain, which is structured in order to selectively couple in a stable , but easily removable / separable , manner at least one anchoring element 18 to at least one other anchoring element 18 in such a way as to cause a pre-established elastic traction between the pre-established points on the teeth themselves with the apposition of buttons or elastic tractions , or on traditional fixed orthodontic devices to modi fy the occlusal planes or the relationships between the teeth .

[0063] The shape and / or si ze and / or material of the deforming insert 21 depends on the second pre-established shape to be assumed by the main body 2 .

[0064] According to a possible embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 4 , the deforming insert 21 is si zed in such a way that when coupled to the main body 2 , the main body 2 deforms transversely with respect to the symmetry plane S . This configuration allows the main body 2 to be expanded transversely with respect to the symmetry plane S in order to obtain an increase in the dimensions of the cup .

[0065] According to a possible embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 4 , a deforming insert 21 may be configured so as to deform the main body 2 transversely with respect to the symmetry plane S into a second predetermined shape so as to reduce the distance between a lateral portion 4 and the other lateral portion 4 by a predetermined value, with respect to the relative distance between them in the first shape .

[0066] According to one possible embodiment shown in Figures 1- 4 , the deforming insert 21 can be coupled to the re ferenceguide notches 10 present on the front perimeter edge 3b . The deforming insert 21 may have an arcuate shape and be shaped such that the length of the arc chord is less than the length of the arc chord between the ends of the side portions 4 .

[0067] The deforming insert 21 can be configured so as to deform the main body 2 into the second shape in which it spreads the two lateral portions 4 transversely with respect to the symmetry plane S by a predetermined value .

[0068] The deforming insert 21 can be configured so as to deform the main body 2 in order to tighten the two lateral portions 4 towards each other along a direction approximately transversal to the plane of symmetry S by a value predetermined in the second shape .

[0069] Another advantage of the deforming inserts 21 is that they can be manually coupled to the main body 2 with mechanical retention, ensuring coupling even during use and advantageously eliminating the use of adhesive materials .

[0070] The Applicant has also found that the ref erence-repere marks 10 arranged on the main body 2 in correspondence with the reference points and the selective and manual insertion of the deforming inserts 21 into the same give the orthodontic activator device a high level of utility as it allows the dentist to vary the shape of the main body 2 at will , thus adapting the orthodontic activator device 1 from time to time according to the needs of the intervention .

[0071] With reference to the example shown in Figures 1 -4 the front perimeter edge 3b consists of a protruding relief or ridge . More preferably the front perimeter edge 3b protrudes from the front face of the upper flange 9 and from the front face of the lower flange 15 in such a way as to form a ridge . More preferably, the ridge formed by the protruding front perimeter edge 3b has an approximately rectangular crosssection . The thickness of the ridge of the front perimeter edge 3b may be approximately 1 mm . The technical ef fect of the ridge is to create in the same device areas of di f ferent and the same elasticity

[0072] The main body 2 and the deforming inserts 21 conveniently form an orthodontic kit that can be used to advantage by the dentist during various phases of the dental posture correction procedure . In use , the dentist can conveniently use the activating dental device 1 in the first form, keeping the repere- reference marks 10 free , i . e . not engaged by the deforming inserts 21 , or in at least a second form, coupling a deforming insert 21 to the main body 2 .

[0073] The activator dental device has improved utility compared to known solutions as it allows the dentist to perform reconfigurations or remodeling of the shape of the arched body based on the patient ' s orthodontic needs .

[0074] The ability to modi fy the body shape of the activating dental device therefore allows the dentist to configure the activating dental device to perform targeted orthopedic thrusts on the j aws . For example , it is possible to modi fy the occlusal plane and therefore make corrections according to the functional masticatory angles of Planas and / or according to the occlusion curve described by Monson .

[0075] Figure 9 shows a dental activator device 20 which is similar to the dental activator device 1 shown in Figures 1 to 8 , and whose component parts will be identi fied, where possible , with the same reference numbers that identi fy corresponding parts of the dental activator device 1 . The dental activator device 20 di f fers from the dental activator device 1 in that the main body 2 is not monolithic but is multicomponent , i . e . it is composed of a plurality of components .

[0076] Preferably, with reference to Figure 9 , the main body of the activating dental device 20 comprises four distinct components , wherein a component Cl comprises the vestibular flange consisting of the upper flange 9 and the lower flange 15 , a component C2 comprises the two pairs of lateral flanges 4a j oined by a central curved flap 18 , a component C3 comprises the base 3 , a component C4 comprises the upper support wall 8 and the lingual flange 16 .

[0077] Preferably, the C1 -C4 components can be stably coupled together by fastening means , such as adhesives , or mechanical devices .

[0078] Preferably at least one of the components C1 -C4 can be made of a material di f ferent from the material of the other components . For example , component Cl can be made of thermoplastic polymer material of the elastomeric type , component C2 can be made of silicone , component C3 can be made of rubber, component C4 can be made of silicone .

[0079] Preferably, components C1-C4 can be made of materials with di f ferent elastic / mechanical characteristics . For example , component Cl can have a greater elasticity than component C2 ; component C3 can have a greater hardness than component C4 .

[0080] The components C1-C4 and the deforming inserts 21 can therefore form an orthodontic kit that advantageously allows a dentist to assemble the orthodontic activator device directly in the of fice , according to the patient ' s needs .

[0081] The components C1-C4 can be produced and assembled together directly during the manufacturing phase and therefore in an artisanal or industrial way in order to create an orthodontic activator device 20 with mechanical elastic characteristics di f ferent from them . The component C3 defining the base (which reproduces the occlusal support plane of the teeth) can include a hard and / or elastic material . The component C3 can be made for example with a Teflon base or similar .

[0082] The components C1-C2 can include elastic materials with a shore hardness that corresponds approximately to the shore hardness of a patient's lips. The Cl C2 components can be characterized by a shore hardness of approximately 40, therefore a softer material. The C4 element that reproduces the tongue can be made using a material with a shore hardness of approximately 65, therefore a little more tenacious.
