Abstract

Tethered or cable-based devices or robots technology are now able to travel longer distances, and through more turns, before they are unable to propel themselves or be propelled into or out of their environment. This is accomplished by locally applying force to the tether / cable through one or more discrete devices, which means that a large total resistive force on the tether / cable can be overcome by using multiple small devices that still allow the overall system to pass through confined spaces. This makes the overall system smaller, more power efficient, and cheaper, since less forces need to be applied to the tether / cable.
