[0030] Fig. 1 is an overall view of an industrial robot 1 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. Figs. 2-5 show structural details at the connection interfaces between a bent tube 10 and a straight tube 20. As shown in Fig. 1, the industrial robot 1 comprises a base 50, a plurality of joint casings10 (labeled as 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e,  10f in the figure) and a plurality of connecting arms 20 (labeled as 20a, 20b in the figure) connecting two adjacent joints. Each of the joint casing may include a joint (also called as the actuator) . The actuator, for example, may include a motor, a reduction gear, sensors, and the like, as well known in the art. A controller may be provided in the base 50. The actuators within the casing can be controlled based on instructions from the controller so as to control a posture of the robot arm and / or a movement path of an end effector provided at the distal end of the robot arm. In the shown example, there are six joints each arranged in the respective joint casing. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and the number of joints may be any other proper number.

[0031] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 1-5, the joint casing is in a form of a bent tube 10. The bent tube 10 may be of substantially the same configuration and is configured to house a joint. The bent tube 10 comprises a first opening extending in a first axial direction and a second opening extending in a second axial direction perpendicular to the first axial direction. Due to the perpendicular arrangement of the axial openings, it facilitate arrangement of joints within the casing and facilitate connection with adjacent tubes. The first opening comprises a first connection interface 12. The bent tube 10 defines an inner chamber. Components of an actuator 30 can be arranged within the inner chamber (referring to Fig. 3) . The actuator, among the others, may include a ratable part and a fixed part. The fixed part may include a stator of a motor. The ratable part, among the others, may include a rotor of the motor. The rotor is configured to rotate around an axial direction. A reduction gear may be connected to the rotor. Components to be driven, for example, an adjacent connecting arm, may be further connected to the reduction gear. Thus, the adjacent connecting arm may be driven to rotate around the axial direction. The fixed part of the joint may be fixed to the bent tube 10 at the first connection interface 12. In the shown example, the bent tube 10 may be curved in an L-shape. One end of the bent tube 10 defines a axial opening communicating with the inner chamber of the tubular body. The axial direction is corresponding to a direction that the axial opening opens and is also corresponding to an axial direction around which the adjacent connecting arm rotates. With the axial opening, the actuators can be easily placed and fixed within the joint casing. The second opening comprises a second connection interface 14. The bent tube 10 may be fixed to an adjacent straight tube 20 at the second connection interface 14.

[0032] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 1-5, the straight tube 20 extends in a lengthwise direction. The lengthwise direction may align with the axial direction of the  adjacent tube. The straight tube 20 may comprise a third opening arranged at a first lengthwise end and a fourth opening arranged at a second lengthwise end opposite to first lengthwise end. The third opening is parallel with the fourth opening. This may facilitate its connection with adjacent tubes. The third opening comprises a third connection interface 24. The bent tube 10 may be fixed to the straight tube 20 when the second connection interface 14 of the bent tube 10 mates with the third connection interface 24 of the straight tube 20. The third opening comprises a third connection interface 24. The bent tube 10 may be fixed to the straight tube 20 when the second connection interface 14 of the bent tube 10 mates with the third connection interface 24 of the straight tube 20. The fourth opening comprises a fourth connection interface 22. The straight tube 20 may be fixed to an adjacent bent tube 10 at the fourth connection interface 22.

[0033] According to the present disclosure, by use of the bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b, it enables to achieve modular design of the industrial robot 1 and thus the number for constituting the industrial robot 1 can be significantly reduced. Accordingly, production costs of the industrial robot 1 can be reduced. In some embodiments, one of the bent tube 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b is mainly made of a plastic material, and the other of the bent tube 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b is made of lightweight metals such as aluminum alloys. In some embodiments, the plastic material may further comprise other materials, for example, carbon fibers, compound materials, and the like, to improve its structural performances.

[0034] In some embodiments, both the bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b are mainly made of plastic material. For example, these tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f, 20a, 20b may be produced by injection modeling.

[0035] The bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b are load bearing members and should have sufficient strength to withstand loads. Even when the bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20b are manufactured by plastic materials, the structural strength may be ensured. By the tube shape of the bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and the straight tubes 20a, 20, the tubes provide sufficient structural strength. In some embodiments, the bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f and / or the straight tubes 20a, 20 are substantially closed except the axial openings. There is no provision of a work opening in the casing of the arm body. With this arrangement, a structural strength is increased. Also, the hygienic requirements for some specific applications can be meet.

[0036] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 2-5, the bent tube 10 and the straight tube 20 may be made of a plastic material and their connection interfaces 12, 14, 22, 24 may comprise a metal material. In some embodiments, the connection interfaces 12, 14, 22, 24 of the respective tubes 10, 20 may be formed as a metal ring. The metal ring may be integrally formed with the tube, for example, by insert molding. In some embodiments, the connection between the metal rings is not detachable. For example, the metal rings may be welded together. Alternatively, the metal rings may be connected to each other by using adhesive. In some embodiments, the connection between the metal rings is detachable. For example, the metal rings may be fixed to each other via a screw fastener, a clamping device, and the like. In some embodiments, the connection interfaces may be formed of the same material (for example, plastic material) as the respective tube and may comprise a plurality of metal inserts. The metal insert each comprises a thread hole for receiving a screw fastener. Due to the arrangement of the metal material, the connection strength at the connection interfaces 12, 14, 22, 24 can be increased.

[0037] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 2-5, the straight tube 20 may be detachably fixed to the bent tube 10. As shown in Figs. 2-5, at least part of a metal ring of the straight tube 20 may overlap a part of a metal ring of the bent tube 10. The straight tube 20 is fixed to the bent tube 10 via a metal screw fastener. When the two tubes for forming the robot arm are made of plastic material, the plastic material is subject to a creep risk if operates under stress over a long term. There is a high risk that connection between the two plastic components (for example, screw connection) becomes loose. When metal is used at the connecting position of two plastic components, the above mentioned creep risk can be avoided and connection strength of the two plastic components constituting the robot can be ensured.

[0038] As shown in Figs. 2-5, the metal ring of the straight tube 20 and the metal ring of the bent tube 10 both extend in the lengthwise direction to define a circumferential wall 147, 247 at the respective connection interfaces. The circumferential wall 147, 247 comprises a plurality of holes 142, 242 for receiving screw fasteners 15. The plurality of holes 142, 242 are circumferentially distributed around the circumferential wall 147, 247 and extend in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction. The hole 142 provided at the radial outer side may be a through hole while the hole 242 provided at the radial inner side may be a threaded hole. Thus, the straight tube 20 can be fixed to the bent tube 10 via the screw fasteners 15. The other interfaces 12, 22 are analogously formed. In particular, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a plurality of holes 122, 222 are provided for screw connection.

[0039] In the shown example, the metal ring of the straight tube 20 is located at the radial inner side and the metal ring of the bent tube 10 is located at the radial outer side. It is to be understood that this is merely illustrative and the metal ring of the straight tube 20 is located at the radial outer side and the metal ring of the bent tube 10 is located at the radial inner side.

[0040] Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a robot arm according to a second example embodiment of the present disclosure. In Fig. 6, the connections interfaces of the tubes 10, 20 are formed as radial flange and the tube 10 is fixed to the tube 20 via screw fasteners 15. In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 6, the metal ring may be formed as a radial flange 145, 245. The radial flange 145, 245 each comprise a plurality of holes 142, 242 for receiving screw fasteners. The plurality of holes is circumferentially distributed around the flange and extend in the lengthwise direction. The hole 142 provided at the top side may be a through hole while the hole 242 provided at the lower side may be a threaded hole. Thus, the straight tube 20 can be fixed to the bent tube 10 via the screw fasteners 15.

[0041] Fig. 7 show a robot arm according to a third example embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 8 shows a partial enlarged view of Fig. 7 at the connection interfaces and the straight tube 20 is fixed to the bent tube 10 via a clamp device. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the connection interface 24 of the straight tube 20 is formed as an end flange. The connection interface 14 of the bent tube 10 is also formed as an end flange. The end flange of the straight tube 20 may be fixed to the end flange of the bent tube 10 via a hoop.

[0042] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 8, the end flange of the straight tube 20 may include a radial extension 241 which extends radially and outwardly. One portion of the loop 25 is configured to abut against the radial extension 241 at one side (i.e., the top side in the shown example) . The end flange of the bent tube 10 may comprise a connection surface 141. The connection surface 141 may include threads. One portion of the loop 25 is configured to threadly engage with the connection surface 141. The loop 25 may comprise an upper section 252 configured to hold at least one part of the radial extension 241 and a lower section 254. The lower section 254 may include threads and is configured to threadly engage with the connection surface 141. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and the radial extension may be provided at the bent tube and the thread connection surface may be provided at the straight tube.

[0043] In some embodiments (not shown) , the connection interfaces 12, 14, 22, 24 of the  respective tubes 10, 20 may be formed as an end flange. The end flanges of the respective tubes 10, 20 may be integrally formed with respective tubes 10, 20. The end flange may comprise a plurality of metal inserts. The metal insert each comprises a thread hole for receiving a screw fastener. The metal insert may be integrally formed with the respective tubes 10, 20, for example, by insert molding. In particular, the metal insert may be used as a compress limiter. With provision of the metal sleeve, the screw fastener for connecting the end flanges are not subject to compression caused by creep of the plastic materials. Thus, the connection strength at the connection interfaces 12, 14, 22, 24 can be increased. In some embodiments, the end flange may comprise lengthwise circumferential wall which extends in the lengthwise direction. In some embodiments, the end flange may comprise radial circumferential wall which extends in the radial direction.

[0044] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, there is merely a single actuator received in each of the bent tubes. The single actuator 30 comprises a fixed part fixed to the bent tube 10 and a rotatable part fixed to an adjacent tube. There is no actuator provided in the straight tube 20. As shown in Fig. 1, there are six bent tubes 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, 10f. It is to be understood that the number of the joints are merely illustrative.

[0045] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1, there are first and second actuators within the tubes 10a, 10b respectively. A fixed part of the first actuator is fixed to one end of the tube 10a. At the other end, the bent tube 10a is fixed to a rotatable part of a first actuator provided in the bent tube 10b. The rotatable part of the second actuator may be fixed to the straight tube 20a. The other end of the straight tube 20a is fixed to one axial end of the bent tube 10c. A third actuator is received in the bent tube 10c. A fixed part of the third actuator is fixed to the bent tube 10c. A rotatable part of the third actuator is fixed to the bent tube 10d. A fourth actuator is received in the bent tube 10d. A fixed part of the fourth actuator is fixed to the bent tube 10d. A rotatable part of the fourth actuator is fixed to the straight tube 20b. A fifth actuator is received in the bent tube 10e. A fixed part of a fifth actuator is fixed to the bent tube 10e. A rotatable part of the fifth actuator is fixed to the straight tube 20b. A sixth actuator is received in the bent tube 10f. A fixed part of a sixth actuator is fixed to the bent tube 10f. A rotatable part of the sixth actuator is fixed to its end flange. It is to be understood that the shown joint arrangement is merely illustrative and the industrial robots may take other proper arrangements.

[0046] The above modular design can also be applicable to a SCARA robot. In some embodiments, there are four bent tubes and three straight tubes. There is a single first actuator  within a first bent tube. The first bent tube at its one axial end may connected to the first straight tube. A fixed part of the first actuator is fixed to one end of the first bent tube at its opposite axial end. The rotatable part of the first actuator is fixed to the first straight tube. The other end of the first straight tube is fixed to one axial end of a second bent tube. A second actuator is received in the second bent tube. A fixed part of the second actuator is fixed to the second bent tube. A rotatable part of the second actuator is fixed to a third bent tube. A third actuator is received in the third bent tube. A fixed part of the third actuator is fixed to the third bent tube. A rotatable part of the third actuator is fixed to one axial end of the second straight tube. The opposite axial end of the second straight tube is connected to a fourth bent tube. A fourth actuator is received in the fourth bent tube. A fixed part of a fourth actuator is fixed to the fourth bent tube. A rotatable part of the fourth actuator is fixed to an end flange provided at the fourth bent tube.
