Description

METHOD FOR OPERATING VEHICLE SYSTEM AND VEHICLETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to a method for operating a vehicle system of a vehicle. Further embodiments relate to a computer program product, a control unit for a vehicle system, and a vehicle.BACKGROUND

[0002] Vehicle systems normally comprise a variety of on-board sensors for detecting characteristics of a vehicle state, one or more wireless communication units for receiving and transmitting data via a communication network, for example, in a vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and one or more user interfaces which provide the driver the possibility to input data, for example, for operating a navigation application among other functionalities of the vehicle system. Data which has been generated or received by a vehicle system through any of the aforesaid functionalities enables a control unit of the vehicle system to determine a present vehicle state or a present driving situation of the vehicle. A digital representation of the vehicle state or the driving situation which has been generated in this way by means of a control unit can be continuously updated. Furthermore, where a generated representation of the vehicle state or the driving situation indicates a particular demand, interest, preference, etc., of the driver with respect to the vehicle state or the driving situation, information output is normally provided by means of one or more output functionalities of the vehicle system, such as a character string which may be output at a display, or an automatic voice output which may be provided via a loudspeaker, etc., to assist the driver in making an adequate decision with respect to the determined vehicle state or driving situation.

[0003] The amount of information output which is provided by typical vehicle systems can pose a high cognitive demand on a driver. In addition, information which is automatically provided to a driver based on a wrongly inferred demand, interest, preference, etc., of the driver can lead to weariness on the part of the driver and can decrease the driver’s willingness to accept automatically provided information in the future. In some cases, a driver may then even deactivate the automatic provision of information by the vehicle system, in which case the (full) capacity of the vehicle system to assist the driver in decision making would remain unused. Accordingly, there is a need for improved driver assistance by means of a vehicle system.SUMMARY

[0004] Accordingly, there is provided a method, a computer program product, a control unit for a vehicle system, and a vehicle.

[0005] According to an aspect, a method for operating a vehicle system associated with a vehicle is provided. The method comprises predicting, by means of the vehicle system, an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle based at least partially on vehicle system data using a trained machine learning model. The method further comprises determining, by means of the vehicle system and based on one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation, deductive-communication-less output to be provided to a driver of the vehicle using at least one output functionality of the vehicle system. The deductive-communication-less output is deductive-communication-less with respect to the upcoming driving situation. Moreover, the deductive-communication-less output is determined to assist the driver in a decision-making process in the upcoming driving situation by non-consciously regulating a responsive disposition of the driver. The method further comprises controlling, by means of the vehicle system, the at least one output functionality in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output.

[0006] Providing deductive-communication-less output with respect to an upcoming driving situation can be suited to influence a responsive disposition of the driver in a non-conscious manner in such way that a capacity of the driver to make an adequate decision concerning a driving-related action by the driver, in the upcoming driving situation is improved. Furthermore, by predicting the upcoming driving situation, the deductive-communication-less output with respect to the upcoming driving situation can be determined and provided to the driver in advance. In such way, the driver is enabled to process the output prior to arriving at the upcoming driving situation. Thus, the driver’s capacity to make an adequate decision can be improved early before the driver arrives at the upcoming driving situation. This enables an improved capacity of the driver to make an adequate decision at the moment when the driver arrives at the upcoming driving situation. When the predicted upcoming driving situation is deemed uncomfortable to the driver, the driver can in this way be prepared for the uncomfortable situation, whereby a risk of an accident due to the driver’s behavior in the upcoming driving situation can be reduced. Furthermore, by using deductive-communication-less output, a cognitive load on the driver is reduced. This applies in comparison to deductive-communication output.

[0007] The responsive disposition of the driver may comprise at least one of a mental state or an emotional state of the driver.

[0008] Psychological research on user and consumer behavior has shown that people often make better choices when not actively thinking about a choice, especially, in complex consumer settings. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Dijksterhuis, A., Bos, M.W., Nordgren, L.F., &Van Baaren, R.B. (2006) : “On making the right choice: The deliberation-without-attention effect” , Science, vol. 311 (5763) , p. 1005-1007. A proposed explanation is that unconscious processes are less constrained than conscious processes, which make large demands on a person’s cognitive system. In contrast, unconscious processes, such as intuition, function in ways that automatically and rapidly synthesize a range of complex information, which gives an advantage over thinking deliberately. Furthermore, psychological research has discovered that a person’s brain keeps solving a problem while the person does something else. One conclusion is that giving the subconscious time to work makes for better decisions. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Creswell, J. D., Bursley, J. K., &Satpute, A. B. (2013) : “Neural reactivation links unconscious thought to decision-making performance” , Social cognitive and affective neuroscience, vol. 8 (8) , p. 863-869. The proposed method enables exploiting such effects, by means of a vehicle system, to enable improved decision making by a driver.

[0009] Furthermore, as the deductive-communication-less output is deductive-communication-less with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation, a falsely predicted upcoming driving situation will not result in the provision of output which will be consciously perceived by the driver as false. Thus, a likelihood that the driver may develop weariness and / or general distrust with respect to information that is automatically output by the vehicle system can be reduced.

[0010] In the context of the present disclosure, “deductive-communication-less with respect to the upcoming driving situation” applies to information or communication output which is void of any description, any conclusion and / or any instruction with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0011] In the context of the present disclosure, “deductive-communication output” with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation denotes output which contains explicit information implying one or more of a description, a conclusion and / or an instruction with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0012] Controlling the at least one output functionality in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output may be performed such that the determined deductive-communication-less output is provided to the driver by means of the at least one output functionality. Controlling the at least one output functionality in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output may be performed without any deductive-communication output with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation being provided by means of any output functionality of the vehicle system.

[0013] The method may further comprise determining, by means of the vehicle system, at least one of a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation using the trained machine learning model. The one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation may comprise the determined at least one of a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0014] The method may further comprise predicting, by means of the vehicle system, at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation. Determining the deductive-communication-less output may be further determined based on the predicted at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0015] Predicting the at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation may be performed at least partially based on a determined present behavior, a determined present mental state and / or a determined present emotional state of the driver.

[0016] Additionally, or alternatively, predicting the at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation may be performed at least partially based on historical behavior data, historical mental state data and / or historical emotional state data associated with the driver. The historical behavior data, the historical mental state data and / or the historical emotional state data associated with the driver may be stored by means of a storage device of the vehicle system.

[0017] Determining the at least one of a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation may be performed at least partially based on the predicted at least one of a behavior, a mental state, or an emotional state of the driver in the upcoming driving situation.

[0018] The vehicle system data may comprise at least one of real-time sensor data obtainable by means of a sensor system of the vehicle system, communication data receivable by means of a communication unit of the vehicle system, user input data obtainable via a user interface of the vehicle system, and / or historical data storable in a storage device of the vehicle system.

[0019] The predicted output may comprise at least one of a visual, an acoustic, an olfactory and / or a haptic output.

[0020] The output may be determined to non-consciously regulate the responsive disposition of the driver by providing at least one of priming, emotion regulation and / or inductive communication to the driver with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation. Determining the deductive-communication-less output to be provided to the driver may comprise selecting at least one among priming, emotion regulation and / or inductive communication for provision to the driver dependent on the one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0021] Providing priming may comprise adjusting at least one of a visual condition, an acoustic condition and / or a haptic feedback condition in the vehicle to cause one or more sensory stimuli in accordance with expected sensory stimuli at the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0022] In the context of the present disclosure, “priming” may denote subconsciously stimulating a person with cues related to an expected situation. In this way, the driver may be prepared to upcoming conditions in a safe driving environment, to decrease the driver’s reaction times when conditions become adverse. In this context, “priming” may further refer to a change in a person’s ability to detect, identify or react to an item after a prior encounter with a related stimulus. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Tulving, E., &Schacter, D.L. (1990) : “Priming and human memory systems” , Science, vol. 247(4940) , p. 301-306. Depending on the expected situation, a modality of the generated stimuli may be selected. When an upcoming situation involves visual and auditory stimuli, priming cues should load on the same modalities. Priming may improve the person’s performance when the same response is required. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Dennis, I., &Schmidt, K. (2003) : “Associative processes in repetition priming” , Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, vol. 29 (4) , p. 532. Further, research has shown effects of priming on a person’s risk attitudes, as risk avoidance was primed by negative stimuli and vice versa. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for ex-ample, in Erb, H.P., Bioy, A., &Hilton, D.J. (2002) : “Choice preferences without inferences: Subconscious priming of risk attitudes” , Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, vol. 15 (3) , p. 251-262. The same was later better explained by the users’affect, as participants took more risk the better they felt. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Alempaki, D., Starmer, C., &Tufano, F. (2019) : “On the priming of risk preferences: The role of fear and general affect” , Journal of Economic Psychology, vol. 75, 102137.

[0023] Providing emotion regulation may comprise operating the at least one output functionality of the vehicle system such that a physiological activation level of the driver and / or a valence of a physiological activation of the driver is moderated towards a desired state associated with the predicted upcoming driving situation. “Valence” may refer to a degree of ‘goodness’ of the physiological activation.

[0024] In the context of the present disclosure, “emotion regulation” may denote an adaptation of a person’s emotions in a desired direction. “Emotion regulation” may refer to any conscious and / or non-conscious strategies usable to increase, maintain, and / or decrease one or more components of a person’s emotional response. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Gross, J. J. (2001) : “Emotion regulation in adulthood: Timing is everything” , Current directions in psychological science, vol. 10 (6) , p. 214-219, here p. 215. Through emotion regulation, a driver’s emotions may be influenced according to a best driving performance paradigm based on the so-called Yerkes-Dodson-Law and the so-called Russell’s theory of a two-dimensional affect model. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Yerkes, R.M., &Dodson, J.D. (1908) : “The relation of strength of stimulus to rapidity of habit-formation” , Punishment: Issues and Experiments, vol. 18 (5) , p. 27–41, and in Russell, J. A. (1980) : “A circumplex model of affect” , Journal of personality and social psychology, vol. 39 (6) , p. 1161. According to these theories, a best driving performance may be attained when the driver’s physiological activation level is moderate, and valence of the physiological activation is moderate to high. Accordingly, the driver’s state may be adapted through “emotion regulation” when not being in a moderate state.

[0025] Stimuli for priming and / or emotion regulation may not need to be consciously perceived by the driver to have an impact on decision-making, but a subliminal presentation, that is below the conscious perception level, may be sufficient. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Elgendi, M., Kumar, P., Barbic, S., Howard, N., Abbott, D., &Cichocki, A. (2018) : “Subliminal priming-state of the art and future perspectives” , Behavioral Sciences, vol. 8 (6) , p. 54, and in Sutil-Martín, D.L., &Rienda- J.J. (2020) : “The influence of unconscious perceptual processing on decision-making: A new perspective from cognitive neuroscience applied to generation z” , Frontiers in Psychology, vol. 11, 562668. Subliminal stimulation may require that the stimulus is registered by the appropriate sensory stem, and thereby activating the corresponding representation, but under the level of consciousness, which is defined at a presentation time of around 500 ms. Background information on these terms and subjects is provided, for example, in Smith, P.K., &McCulloch, K. C. (2012) : “Subliminal perception” , Encyclopedia of human behavior, p. 551-557, and, again, in Elgendi, M., Kumar, P., Barbic, S., Howard, N., Abbott, D., &Cichocki, A. (2018) : “Subliminal priming-state of the art and future perspectives” , Behavioral Sciences, vol. 8 (6) , p. 54.

[0026] Providing inductive communication may comprise outputting explicit information to the driver, the explicit information relating to one or more conditions at the predicted upcoming driving situation while being non-descriptive, conclusion-free and instruction-free with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0027] In the context of the present disclosure, “inductive communication” may denote any presentation of information without conclusions, recommendations, or request, as would otherwise be required with respect to a triggering event and / or a purpose of the communication, if an expected situation were to occur. Inductive communication may be used to convey information based on an expected situation that has low likelihood. The vehicle system may leave this information to interpretation of the driver at a subconscious level (so-called affective understanding) with an expectation that the driver may prepare multiple solutions subconsciously as time passes based on a personal context how to deal with a potential future situation with less impact on cognitive load in the moment and thus be better prepared for the future. The vehicle system may use inductive communication to provide a low probability but critical information to assist the driver with a decision-making process at a subconscious level.

[0028] Determining the deductive-communication-less output to be provided to the driver may be performed when, for a given urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation, the likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a first threshold likelihood. In such case, the method may further comprise, when, for the given urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation, the likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the first threshold likelihood, determining at least one of a deductive-communication output to be provided to the driver or a drive-related operation to be automatically performed by the vehicle system.

[0029] The deductive-communication output may comprise explicit information relating to one or more conditions at the predicted upcoming driving situation implying one or more of a description, a conclusion and / or an instruction with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0030] For a given likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation, one or more of the following may be performed. No output may be provided when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a first threshold urgency. Additionally, or alternatively, inductive communication may be provided when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the first threshold urgency and beneath a second threshold urgency greater than the first threshold urgency. Additionally, or alternatively, at least one of priming or emotion regulation may be provided when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the second threshold urgency.

[0031] Providing priming may comprise adjusting at least one of a visual condition, an acoustic condition, an olfactory condition and / or a haptic feedback condition in the vehicle to cause one or more sensory stimuli in accordance with expected sensory stimuli at the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0032] Providing emotion regulation may comprise operating the at least one output functionality of the vehicle system such that a physiological activation level of the driver and / or a valence of a physiological activation of the driver is moderated towards a desired state associated with the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0033] Providing inductive communication may comprise outputting explicit information to the driver, the explicit information relating to one or more conditions at the predicted upcoming driving situation while being non-descriptive, conclusion-free, and instruction-free with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0034] According to another aspect, a computer program product is provided. The computer program product comprises portions of program code which, when executed by a processor of a control unit of a vehicle system, cause the control unit to perform the method according to any one of the preceding methods.

[0035] According to another aspect, a control unit for a vehicle system is provided. The control unit comprises a processor and a storage device operatively coupled to the processor. The storage device stores portions of program code which, when executed by the processor, cause the control unit to perform the method as herein provided.

[0040] FIG. 3 is a control unit for a vehicle system according to an embodiment.

[0041] FIG. 4 is a method for operating a vehicle system of a vehicle according to another embodiment.DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0042] FIG. 1 shows a flow diagram of a method 100 for operating a vehicle system of a vehicle. In some examples, the method 100 is performed by means of a control unit of the vehicle system.

[0043] The method 100 comprises predicting, by means of the vehicle system, an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle based at least partially on vehicle system data using a trained machine learning model, step 110.

[0044] The method 100 further comprises determining, by means of the vehicle system and based on one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation, a deductive-communication-less output to be provided to a driver of the vehicle using at least one output functionality of the vehicle system, step 120. The deductive-communication-less output is deductive communication less with respect to the upcoming driving situation. The deductive-communication-less output is determined to assist the driver in a decision-making process in the upcoming driving situation by non-consciously regulating at least one of a mental state or an emotional state of the driver.

[0045] The method 100 further comprises controlling, by means of the vehicle system, the at least one output functionality in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output, step 130.

[0046] FIG. 2 shows schematically and exemplarily a vehicle 200. The vehicle 200 comprises a vehicle system 210. The vehicle system 210 comprises a control unit 220, which comprises a processor 222 and a data storage device 224 operatively connected to the processor 222. The vehicle system 210 further comprises a sensor system 240, 242, 244, exemplarily shown in FIG. 2 as comprising a position sensor 240, such as a GPS module, for determining a position of the vehicle 200, a front camera 242 for detecting objects in an environment in front of the vehicle 200, and a driver camera 244 for monitoring a behavior of a driver D of the vehicle 200. The vehicle system 210 further comprises at least one output functionality 230 configured to provide perceivable output, such as visual, acoustic and / or haptic output, to the driver D. In the shown example, the vehicle system 210 also comprises a communication unit 250 adapted to receive and transmit communication signals, for example, radio signals, over a communication network to which the vehicle system 210 is wirelessly connected. Each of the output functionality 230, the sensors 240, 242, 244, and the communication unit 250 is operable to be operatively connected to the control unit 220.

[0047] The control unit 220 is configurable to predict an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle 200 by using a trained machine learning model to which data that is available to the vehicle system 210 can be provided as input. In some examples, the trained machine learning model is stored by means of the storage device 224. In other examples, the trained machine learning model is stored at least partially at a network node external to the vehicle 200, to which the control unit 220 is communicatively connectable by means of the communication unit 250.

[0048] For predicting an upcoming driving situation, the control unit 220 may use any type of data which is available to the vehicle system 210 and which is indicative of an upcoming driving situation. For example, each of the sensors 240, 242, 244 may be operable to detect, in real time, one or more conditions which may be indicative of an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle 200. In an example, the position sensor 240 is operable to detect a present position of the vehicle 200. In combination with cartographic information, which, for example, is stored in the storage device 224 in connection with a navigation application of the vehicle system 210, the detected position of the vehicle 200 is indicative of one or more possible road trajectories lying ahead of the vehicle 200. In addition, location-specific data, such as topographical objects, local weather information, etc., may be contained in the cartographic information and may be further indicative of an upcoming driving situation at any point of a road trajectory ahead of the vehicle 200. In some examples, such location-specific data may be operable to be updated based on information which is received by means of the communication unit 250 and may be used by the trained machine learning model in predicting the upcoming driving situation.

[0049] In addition, in some examples, image data acquired by means of the front camera 242 is operable to be used to determine one or more of a weather condition, a lighting condition, a sight condition, a time of day, a season, etc. Each of these information types may be indicative of one or more conditions which constitute an upcoming driving situation and, accordingly, may be used by the control unit 220 in predicting the upcoming driving situation.

[0050] In some examples, the upcoming driving situation is operable to be predicted to occur within up to several hours in the future, for example, within 0.25 to 4 hours in the future, from the moment of the prediction. For example, weather information which is operable to be obtained via the wireless communication unit 250 of the vehicle system 210 may indicate a hazardous, such as a wet or icy, road condition in a certain geographical region in a near future, such as within the next couple of hours. In addition, a detected present position of the vehicle 200, and / or a destination input to a navigation functionality of the vehicle system 210, indicates a likelihood that the driver D will direct the vehicle 200 to that region and will reach the region at a corresponding time in the future.

[0051] The control unit 220 is configurable to determine, based on one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation, deductive-communication-less output to be provided to the driver D by means of one or more output functionalities 230 of the vehicle system 210. The deductive-communication-less output is deductive-communication-less with respect to the upcoming driving situation. Furthermore, the deductive-communication-less output is operable to be determined to assist the driver D in a decision-making process when the vehicle 200 reaches the upcoming driving situation. This is achievable, for example, by selecting the deductive-communication-less output in such manner that the output is suited to non-consciously regulate at least one of a mental state or emotional state of the driver D towards a desired state which facilitates that the driver D will make an apt decision when reaching the predicted driving situation.

[0052] The determined deductive-communication-less output is operable to be provided to the driver D via the one or more output functionalities 230. This is achievable, for example, by generating a corresponding control signal by means of the control unit 220 and outputting the control signal towards the output functionality 230.

[0053] In some examples, the deductive-communication-less output comprises any of a visual, an acoustic, an olfactory and / or a haptic output. In some of the examples, a visual output is provided via a display unit among the one or more output functionalities 230 of the vehicle system 210. Moreover, in some of the examples, an acoustic output is provided via one or more loudspeakers among the one or more output functionalities 230 of the vehicle system 210. In some of the examples, an olfactory output is provided via one or more fragrance dispensers among the one or more output functionalities 230 of the vehicle system 210. Moreover, in some of the examples, a haptic output is provided by means of a force feedback functionality comprised in the steering arrangement, one or more pedals, and / or a vibration device in a seat of the vehicle system 210, etc.

[0054] The deductive-communication-less output prepares the driver D non-consciously for the predicted upcoming driving situation. As such, the driver is prepared to appropriate decision making already when arriving at the predicted upcoming driving situation. At the same time, due to the deductive-communication-less character of the provided output, a cognitive load on the driver and a risk of weariness on the part of the driver, for example, when the upcoming driving situation has been predicted wrongly, is reduced. For this purpose, the deductive-communication-less output is determined, in some examples, to cause at least one of priming, emotion regulation and / or inductive communication to the driver D with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation.

[0055] In accordance with some of the preceding examples, the vehicle system data comprises in some examples at least one of real-time sensor data which has been obtained by means of a sensor system, such as sensors 240, 242, 244, of the vehicle system 210. Additionally, or alternatively, in some examples the vehicle system data comprises communication data which has been received by means of the communication unit 250. Additionally, or alternatively, in some examples the control unit 220 uses historical data for predicting the upcoming driving situation, such as stored sensor data and / or stored trajectories of previous travels made by the driver D with the vehicle 200, where such data has been stored, for example, by means of the storage device 224.

[0056] In some examples, the control unit 220 is further configurable to predict a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver D at the predicted upcoming driving situation. For example, the control unit 220 is configurable to determine a present behavior, a present mental state and / or a present emotional state of the driver D using data which is operable to be acquired by means of one or more driver monitoring sensors, such as the driver camera 244, and to predict the driver’s behavior and / or state at the upcoming driving situation based on the driver’s present behavior and / or state. Moreover, in some examples, the control unit 220 is operable to predict the driver’s behavior and / or state at the predicted upcoming driving situation based on historical data which is operable to be stored, for example, by means of the storage device 224, and which is indicative of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver D during an earlier driving situation, which may be operable to be determined as being similar to the predicted upcoming driving situation by the control unit 220, for example, using the trained machine learning model.

[0057] In some examples, the control unit 220 is further configurable to determine the deductive-communication-less output based on the predicted at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver D at the predicted upcoming driving situation. A significance of the determined output can be improved in this way.

[0058] In some examples, the control unit 220 is further configurable to determine a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation, by using the trained machine learning model. In some of these examples, the one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation based on which the control unit 220 is operable to determine the deductive-communication-less output for output to the driver D comprises the determined likelihood, urgency and / or criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation. A significance of the determined output can be further improved in this way.

[0059] Furthermore, in some examples in which the control unit 220 is configurable to predict a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver D in the upcoming driving situation, the control unit 220 is operable to determine the likelihood, the urgency and / or the criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation at least partially based on the driver’s D predicted behavior and / or state. In this way, the likelihood, the urgency and / or the criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation can be further determined with respect to the driver’s individual state.

[0060] In some examples, the control unit 220 is configurable to provide deductive-communication-less output to the driver D with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation, when one or more of the determined likelihood, urgency and / or criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a corresponding threshold likelihood, threshold urgency and / or threshold criticality. Moreover, in some examples, the control unit 220 is configurable to provide deductive communication output to the driver D with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation, when one or more of a determined likelihood, urgency and / or criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above a corresponding threshold likelihood, threshold urgency and / or threshold criticality.

[0061] Furthermore, in some examples, the control unit 220 is configurable to provide, for a given likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation, at least one of the following: (a) no output, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a first threshold urgency; (b) inductive communication, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the first threshold urgency and beneath a second threshold urgency greater than the first threshold urgency; and / or (c) at least one of priming or emotion regulation, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the second threshold urgency.

[0062] Furthermore, in some examples, the control unit 220 is configurable to provide deductive communication output to the driver D when, for a given urgency and / or a given criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation, a likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a first threshold likelihood. In some of these examples, the control unit 220 is further configurable to determine, when for a given urgency and / or a given criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation a likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above a first threshold likelihood, at least one of deductive communication output to be provided to the driver D or a drive-related operation to be automatically performed by the vehicle system 210.

[0063] The following Tables 1 and 2 show exemplary decision schemes for selecting among no action being performed, inductive communication (IC) , priming, emotion regulation (ER) , or deductive communication (DC) being output to the driver, or an automatic drive-related operation (AO) being initiated by the vehicle system. The selection is operable to be made dependent on one of an urgency or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation and a likelihood that the predicted upcoming driving situation will occur. “Urgency” relates to a temporal proximity of the upcoming driving situation, for example, inversely to the length of a time span between the moment of the prediction of the upcoming driving situation and the predicted moment at which the upcoming driving situation is assumed to occur. “Criticality” relates to a predicted impact of the upcoming driving situation, for example, on a safety and / or a comfort of persons in the vehicle or other traffic members. The respective other criterion of an urgency or a criticality which is not comprised in Table 1 and Table 2 may be seen as constant in the example case of either table.

[0064] Table 1:

[0065] Table 2:

[0066] In the schemes shown in Tables 1 and 2, a degree of invasiveness into the driver’s decision-making by the applied operation or output increases with an increasing likelihood that the predicted upcoming driving situation will occur and with an increasing criticality or urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation. In this way, a cognitive load on the driver as well as interference with the driver’s autonomy is operable to be adapted, especially minimized, in accordance with a need imposed by the respective upcoming driving situation.

[0067] FIG. 3 shows schematically and exemplarily a control unit 300 for a vehicle system of a vehicle. The control unit 300 comprises a processor 310 which is operatively connected to a storage device 320. The control unit 300 is configurable to receive and / or output data signals via one or more interfaces 312, 314, as schematically indicated in FIG. 3.

[0068] The storage device 320 stores program code which is executable by means of the processor 310. The control unit 300 is implementable by way of an on-board control unit, such as the control unit 220 of the vehicle system 210 in FIG. 2. In other examples, the control unit 300 is implementable at least partially at one or more network nodes which are in network communication with an on-board vehicle system to receive data from the vehicle system and or output and transmit generated data towards the vehicle system via a communication network.

[0069] The storage device 320 stores program code which, when executed by means of the processor 310, configure the control unit 300 to perform operations according to any of the examples described above in connection with FIG. 1 and FIG. 2.

[0070] The storage device 320 stores program code which, by interaction with the processor 310, constitutes an upcoming driving situation predicting module 322 for predicting an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle based at least partially on vehicle system data using a trained machine learning model.

[0071] The storage device 320 further stores program code constituting a deductive-communication-less output determining module 324 for determining, based on one or more characteristics of the predicted upcoming driving situation, deductive-communication-less output to be provided to a driver of the vehicle using at least one output functionality of the vehicle system. The trained algorithm has been trained based at least partially on previous driving situations and previous behaviors of the driver. The deductive-communication-less output is deductive-communication-less with respect to the upcoming driving situation. In addition, the deductive-communication-less output is determined to assist the driver in a decision-making process in the upcoming driving situation by non-consciously regulating at least one of a mental state or an emotional state of the driver.

[0072] The storage device 320 further stores program code constituting an output functionality controlling module 326 for controlling the at least one output functionality in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output.

[0073] FIG. 4 shows a flow diagram of a method 400 for operating a vehicle system of a vehicle. In some examples, the method 400 is performed by means of a control unit of the vehicle system, analogously to the previous examples. Moreover, steps 410, 420 and 430 of the method 400 are associated with steps 110, 120 and 130 of the method 100, unless otherwise clear from the following description.

[0074] The method 400 comprises predicting an upcoming driving situation of the vehicle based at least partially on vehicle system data using a trained machine learning model, step 410. Predicting the upcoming driving situation is operable to be performed by the vehicle system, for example, by means of a control unit of the vehicle system.

[0075] The method 400 further comprises predicting at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation, step 412. As described in connection with the vehicle 200, in some examples, predicting the at least one of a behavior, a mental state and / or an emotional state of the driver at the predicted upcoming driving situation is performed based on at least one of a determined present behavior, a determined present mental state and / or a determined present emotional state of the driver.

[0076] The method 400 further comprises determining at least one of a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation using a trained machine learning model, step 414. As described in connection with the vehicle 200, in some examples, determining the at least one of a likelihood, an urgency and / or a criticality of the predicted upcoming driving situation is performed at least partially based on the predicted at least one of a behavior, a mental state, or an emotional state of the driver in the upcoming driving situation.

[0077] The method 400 further comprises determining whether the conditions for deductive communication output are fulfilled, block 416. If the conditions for the output of deductive communication output are fulfilled, N-branch, the method 400 proceeds to step 440, at which deductive communication output with respect to the predicted upcoming driving situation is provided to the driver.

[0078] When it is determined at block 416 that the conditions for the provision of deductive communication output are not fulfilled, Y-branch, the method 400 proceeds to step 420. At step 420, for a given likelihood of the predicted upcoming driving situation, no output is provided, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is beneath a first threshold urgency, sub-step 422. Alternatively, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the first threshold urgency and beneath a second threshold urgency greater than the first threshold urgency, inductive communication is provided, sub-step 424. As another alternative, when the urgency of the predicted upcoming driving situation is above the second threshold urgency, at least one of priming or emotion regulation is provided, sub-step 426.

[0079] The method 400 further comprises controlling at least one output functionality of the vehicle system in accordance with the determined deductive-communication-less output, step 430.
